There are more examples of Zoro's misogyny. When he spared Tashigi and argued with her in Loguetown. When he used the flat of his blade on a female bounty hunter in Whiskey Peak. When he fought Kamazo to save Hiyori and Toko despite them being total strangers.
Those examples help illustrate what Zoro's problem exactly is, which is that he has internalized Kuina's struggles in exactly the wrong way. He took away the lesson that "Kuina was right to feel bad, women are weaker than men and do need protecting".
Based on the Monet fight, I get the impression that Zoro doesn't like that he thinks this way, that it's more subconscious than intentional.
HMMM Tashigi was indeed a bit different cause she looked exactly like Kuina, and that fucked Zoro up. But it wasn't fair on Zoro at ALL to push his own anger and stress on Tashigi, which is why Tashigi got so angry at him. She was literally just existing, and Zoro said he HATED that she existed. How unfair is that on Tashigi?!
Sorry got a wee bit long
Hiyori is also a different case because she ASKED for Zoro's help, and she had a child in hand while being clearly weapon-less and defenceless. I wouldn't say that's a "how Zoro sees women" thing, I'd say that's just a "Zoro does not agree with the strong picking on the weak" thing.
But ofc, when it comes to Monet, that's where it's internalised. Whether Zoro admits it or not, or LIKES IT or not, he's internalised that women ARE weaker. Even MONET calls him out on it, because Zoro did nothing but block her attacks with the blunt of his sword. Zoro sees fighting women as "the strong picking on the weak," as he believes himself stronger due to being a man. This is exactly why Tashigi got so angry at him, and he couldn't even take Monet out - TASHIGI had to deliver the final blow.
When Zoro says he would've done that anyways, Tashigi calls him a fucking liar!! And anon, I agree with you! I agree he took the wrong thing from Kuina's breakdown! Because imagine the person you admire, telling you that YOU'RE going to be stronger because you're a man, and THEY'RE going to be weaker because they're a woman - combined with the fact Zoro was raised by an incredibly sexist man.
I don't think Zoro LIKES that he's like this, I think it eats him up inside! This line of thinking has been programmed into him, and if he's going to be the strongest swordsman, he must take ALL opponents seriously - including women who label themselves warriors. Hell, even SANJI says Zoro's a softie, knowing full well Zoro would not greatly injure Monet.
I know a lot of fans, especially Zoro fans, don't like that this is the case. TONS of people think Zoro should see women as equals due to Kuina, but from what we've seen in the story, it's clearly gone the OTHER way - and there's written reason for it to be like that. The most important thing is this aspect of Zoro, first and foremost, is treated as a FLAW. His hesitance against women on the battlefield is NOT a good thing! One Piece characters ALL have flaws they need to work through, that's what makes them human. Whether we like it or not, this is clearly a WRITTEN FLAW Zoro has, considering it's literally IN the text. We just need to hope it's followed up on eventually!

Farewells Said. (And Farewells Not Said)
1084 is very clever with the characters it includes together in scenes, easily worth a post.
Luffy, Nami, Chopper, and Brook & our Kozuki friendos, sans Kin, Momo, and Hiyori, begin what appears to be a concluding scene, though what I love is that it never fully concludes because of Carrot interrupting. That's a trick Wano plays all the time. Giving characters scenes or having them being involved in ways that affect or say something about others. We'll see it all through out this episode.
Hiyori and Toko will have a scene with Zoro later in this episode, and Kin and Momo will have theirs in 1085. Though that interaction for every other Kozuki friend remains intentionally kept on hold. For what reason? I'm sure it will make sense eventually. Especially given that the Academy side manga recently did something similar with Kiku.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Straw Hats here say their farewells to Miyagi, Tristan, and Carrot. And many a garchu was shared.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zoro meets with Hiyori and Otoko to show respect for Yasuie, then they say their farewells. This gag about not returning Enma is gold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sanji's scene is with Osome, the lady he helped during his fight with Queen, and also returned new mouse friend Chuji to, is nice. Osome telling Sanij that the soba he makes motivates her to work hard, and Sanji being totally sweet and respectful about it? Love it, more of this Sanji please.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Franky and his carpenter boss, Minatomo, have a very manly farewell, where not a single tear was shed by anyone.
Tumblr media
Now Usopp's scene is very interesting to me. Of all the locals whose story he was involved in, Kin & Kiku would be the two you'd expect him to have one with, due his role in rescuing them during the battle. We know Kin's farewell is next episode though, and Kiku is with the group at the grounds where Oden Castle once stood. That's two opportunities for a proper farewell scene with Kiku to have happened. One interrupted and the other she is absent for.
What Usopp's scene focuses on instead, is choosing fabric for what I imagine will be for making the Straw Hats' Jolly Roger, which Luffy will give to the Kozuki Clan next episode. Which I love. It's a wonderfully simple and effective way to add more to that important exchange of friendship, and manages to keep Kin and Kiku on the mind, even without them being here in person for Usopp's scene, if you know what to look for. The wall scrolls in this scene add some nice extra spice to the idea as well. Flowers and cranes are often associated with Kiku, and fabrics have a tie to Kin'emon, due to his devil fruit being a clothing power. And finally~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luffy and Tama enjoying bowls of Otsuru's delicious Oshiruko. I love the memories of Act One which are evoked. Luffy and Tama sharing food is so central to Luffy's,(and Ace's,) journey through Wano. Seeing so many familiar sentiments here is perfect.
And we once again have Kiku being absent in a scene where she would effortlessly fit. She is truly Wano's most mysterious flower. Ooh, wonder if Tama had already woven the hat we see Chopper with later? I hope she made hats for everyone.
Truly wonderful effort from Toei with this episode, hats off to 1084. 🎉

well fed. hail fellow lawbin shippers, well fed! chapter 1055 spoilers (there's a bit more than lawbin)
LawBin nation! How ya' doing?!
Tumblr media
Every time I see them together in pursuit of the poneglyphs, and
Tumblr media
giving each other sass (hyena-kun),
Tumblr media
my heart skips a few beats!
Tumblr media
And so Wano is sunken below the sea, just like Atlantis and old Seattle (well, Seattle's not quite under the sea yet). And these two witness it:
Tumblr media
Sitting cross-legged like kids in a school yard (had Marco and Law looking, or trying to look out at the deep water fish in the Polar Tang a little bit similarly for one fic!)
Tumblr media
Lookit our boy. Oda knows how to provide eye candy.
Tumblr media
Down the stairs they go.
Tumblr media
Not sure if that shouldn't be the Road Poneglyph. The meaning really changes, but in case it's Lode, they've hit the mother (next one will be the grandmother, maybe! :-).
AND I really like how this mirrors Law's stance on Onigashima when he was searching for the road poneglyph. Guess Robin doesn't know about that.
Tumblr media
Here's the big reveal! (above). It's a shame that Franky's not with them, but I like that Robin and Law share this pursuit (for somewhat similar reasons, although I think Robin's are more far reaching).
Tumblr media
So opening the country up is a literal act that would also destroy it, and it seems that both Momonosuke and Zunesha have some understanding of this. Zunesha's got those very, very, very long legs...great for lost underwater city exploring.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Bepo and co are having fun in the city, and Killer's really making those takoyaki last.
Tumblr media
And Jim Morrison here, faded to Liberace pretty damn fast. Crass in this ass but no class. We do need a drunken, stumbling, powerful bum, who's unhinged, though. Like, we've got Kizaru, but he doesn't have the destructive will of Ryokugyu, I think. Bullish by name and nature.
Tumblr media
Okay, so Yams is definitely gonna leave the nation? And good speech Momonosuke-kun! There are far too many Straw Hats already, so I hope he hops along for a ride, but we (I) don't need an extra Straw Hat.
Tumblr media
Shanks' mind here, Luffy picking up the vibe later. It wouldn't surprise me if Momo felt him too, but Shanks is doing what he does from the deck of the Red Force.
Tumblr media
It seems that despite all of Momonosuke's big words and heart, and learning how to produce boro-breath (but not being able to control it), it still takes the Old(er) Generation to stop an admiral in his tracks.
Tumblr media
Can Momonosuke remember Shanks? He should be able to. For him, being eight years old was as recent as about three (?) months ago. Love Yamato's victory punch and dance.
And Ryokugyu quitting when the going gets rough. The bonus last page was fab too:
Tumblr media
Brook and Hiyori doing what Brook and Hiyori do best, and I cannot wait to hear that. Not much is said about the SFX and ambient set up in the anime at times (separate from the fight scenes), and some of it is just amazing. Franky hanging out with Chopper and Toko, and Usopp above the crowd.
Tumblr media
The monster trio (and Jinbei), sitting on the hill in their summer yukata, enjoying the food stall wares (Luffy), sake (Zoro), and a smoke (Sanji).
Jinbei's full after eating all of the palace food so that the Straw Hats didn't lose face (I'm making that up).
And they were so ready to help out (but it still doesn't prove that Momo and co. can look after themselves, but really, I guess they'll be aligned with Emperor Luffy and so on).
Also, we know where Killer is, but where's Kid?
Tumblr media
Aw, I really like the relationship between Shanks and Luffy, and I like how Luffy's actions here mirror Shanks' own, to a degree, although, again, even though Luffy beat an emperor, how will he stand up again against the admirals? I think he'll be fine, obviously, but Shanks stepping in at the pivotal moment carries a lot of weight.
I hope that's not the last of Ryokugyu (Aramaki) though!
*Oh, and I know Frobin's got Oda's heart, but don't tell me he hasn't got a soft spot for Law and Robin, even as a brotp, and I'm fine with that! I ship Frobin too.

One Piece Theory: Wano Spoilers
--------------------------------------------------------
Zoro is a member of the Shimotsuki family. More specifically, he's the grandson of Ushimaru. I know this theory isn't that much of a gotcha, since Zoro literally looks exactly like Ushimaru and a young Ryuma, but there's more to it than just the facial features, spiky hair, swordsmanship, and injured left eye.
We don't know about Zoro's past before he challenged the dojo in Shimotsuki Village. The village was founded by the swordsmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo after he illegally left Wano 55 years ago. He was the smith who created the Wado Ichimonji and Enma. Both of which are now in the hands of Zoro. A few years after Shimotsuki Village was founded, Kozaburo settled down and had a child named Koshiro, who we know as the head of the dojo and Kuina's father.
Other members of the Shimotsuki clan include: Yasuie and Toko. Both of which quickly befriended Zoro in Wano. Speaking of Wano, Ushimaru had been the daimyo of Ringo for many years before dying during the reign of Orochi and Kaido. Ringo is also where Zoro, Toko, and Hiyori stayed when Zoro was trying to get back the Shusui from Onimaru.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Onimaru, who has been the companion of Ushimaru, is 69 years old (nice). It is likely that Ushimaru would be a similar age if he were still alive. Unfortunately we don't actually know Ushimaru's date of birth or age at death, so we can't know for sure. However, 70 is a pretty typical age for a grandparent of a 21 year old. Garp is 78, so Zoro's gramps would probably be around a similar age. And we know for sure that Ushimaru isn't Zoro's father, because Oda said so in the SBS for chapter 1024. In that SBS, Oda also said that he might show Ushimaru's bloodline again later or he might just keep it a secret.
Tumblr media
The other known member of the Shimotsuki family who I haven't talked about much so far is Ryuma. Ryuma is the sword god whose corpse and sword were stolen from Wano by Gecko Moria following Moria's defeat at the hands of Kaido. In his youth, Ryuma was just like Zoro, both in looks and in personality: he was also way too eager to fight and was kind of oblivious. We know that Ryuma's blade, Shusui, was the treasure of Wano and that it was given to Zoro after he defeated zombie Ryuma in Thriller Bark. But some time before he acquired Shusui, Ryuma used a sword that resembled the Yubashiri, another legendary sword that made its way into Zoro's possession.
Tumblr media
We've seen that Zoro has had direct ties (and has gotten along well) with all of the known members of the Shimotsuki family, except for Ushimaru. We do know that Ushimaru is a direct descendant of Ryuma. This makes sense since they look and act so similar. With that same line of thinking, it would also make sense for Zoro to be in that bloodline. He clearly doesn't look anything like Kozaburo, Koshiro, or Kuina.
There are also some pieces of the puzzle that are missing on Ushimaru's end. For example, Zoro and Ryuma both wear their swords on their right side, suggesting that they're lefty's. We don't know if the same goes for Ushimaru; we just know that in the past there were times when he wielded two swords. Another missing piece is his birthday. Shimotsuki is an old Japanese word for November. Both Ryuma and Zoro have birthdays in November (the 6th and 11th, respectively), but we don't know when Ushimaru was born. We also don't know the birthday of Kozaburo, but none of the other known Shimotsuki's have birthdays in November (aside from Onimaru, oddly enough). The third missing piece is blood type. Kuina and Koshiro both have type S, Toko and Yasuie have type F, Ryuma and Zoro have type XF, and Kozaburo and Ushimaru's are unknown.
So now we've gone over all the facts and circumstantial evidence, but it leaves us with a problem. If Ushimaru is in fact Zoro's grandfather, then how tf did Zoro end up in Shimotsuki Village? We know Kozaburo went there 55 years ago, but Ushi never left Wano (that we know of). I mean, it was illegal to leave the country and Ushi ended up being the daimyo of Ringo, so he probably didn't commit any major crimes. But maybe he did, who knows. Could Ushi's child have ended up leaving Wano with Kozaburo? We don't know if there were any other Shimotsuki's who ended up in the East Blue. Another possibility lies with Ryuma himself. Well, Ryuma's corpse. The fall of the Kozuki clan was 20 years ago. Zoro was born 21 years ago. Ryuma's corpse was stolen by Moria 23 years ago. Perhaps, Ushimaru's son or daughter was also taken (or escaped) at this time? If they did leave Wano at this time, then they would've had 2 years to find a partner, knock up or get knocked up, and then a few years to find the other known Shimotsuki's that left Wano, drop their kid off with them, and then leave or die.
Tbh considering the family ties of each of the other Strawhats (that we know of - *cough cough* Nami *cough cough* Franky), none of this would be super wild if it were true for Zoro.
--------------------------------------------------------
Anyways, that's the end of this theory. Sorry I didn't feel like proofreading. I'm always open to thoughts, ideas, and comments, so feel free to give your two cents. My next theory post will either be a mini theory about Franky or a big one about the influence of gods in One Piece.

@sozokami ~liked for a starter~
Tumblr media
Hiyori was traveling to Zoro to find a place to remain hidden before the battle was going to be fought in roughly a week. She did not want to endanger anyone else or mess anything up in the plan, so she was forced to part ways with Toko. They had started to head North within the country to find a place, but it was going to be a long journey ahead. The night had fallen which meant they could not travel anymore for that day, so the pair stumbles across a small village.
Tumblr media
Holding the shawl over her head, the female listened to an older couple call out to them. Stepping forward as she made sure to keep her face hidden, she acted like they were newlyweds traveling and they needed shelter for the night. The elderly people took pity on them and offered them a place to sleep inside an old shack that was filled with farm animals, but it would be a place where they could rest. Sitting on the hay, she sighed softly before glancing at the male. "Zorojuurou-kun, please come rest as we will need to save your strength for the journey."

#ONEPIECE1050
I wasn't able to write a review/rant last week so I'm very... very very late.
Chapter 1050 title is: Honor
The cover shows Ichiji and Reiju coming to help Niji and Yonji, which explains who set the books on fire last chapter!! No sight of Judge...
But anyways,,, the chapter starts off exactly where it ended (Kaido is falling down after Luffy's punch) and it seems like he's getting buried underground exactly where Big Mom fell...
Tumblr media
Now, for a while now, we've all been saying that Big Mom's story isn't over... we all think she's going to be relevant in Elbaf (but it's not confirmed) so if that's true... maybe she escaped through the cracks on her path? Kaido's path down is straight down but Big Mom's has multiple cracks out...
Then we cut to Luffy falling from the sky after passing out, and Yamato (beautiful gorgeous Yamato) catching him (Look at how pretty Yamato looks:
Tumblr media
)
And then come the waterfalls...
Toko and Tengu are talking about Yasuie and Toko is saying how some people said that Yasuie knew he was going to die because "he's very important" and Tengu says
Yasuie-dono gave his life in order to give this country one last chance. If he did not, the embers of hope we were entrusted with would have been snuffed out in an instant. He sacrificed himself for the future... He hoped that one day you would be able to live happily.
Upon hearing this, Toko decides to change her message on the lantern...
For a samurai, there is no greater honor:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...AND THIS PANEL. Is just so beautiful. Wow. It's so pretty, Toko looks so happy and so beautiful, I love this whole page.
CAT VIPER ANNOUNCES THE VICTORY AND IT'S OVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER AFTER FOUR LONG YEARS OF WANO IT'S OVEEEEER LUFFY FINALLY BEAT KAIDO (or so we think, let's just... hope)
Tumblr media
AND NAMI STRIKES HER "LUFFY WON" VICTORY POSE
Tumblr media
WITH HER BEAUTIFUL SMILE LOOK AT HER I LOVE HER SO MUCH
Zoro is STILL unconscious... god help all of us zoro stans because this had been a hard few chapters....
and then... Momo starts talking to Zunesha... the whole point of this fight, of this war, is to defeat Kaido so they could fulfill Oden's dream of opening the borders of wano but suddenly...
Tumblr media
Why can't they open the border just yet? So many questions,,,,
AND THEN THE UNDERGROUND LAVA THAT KAIDO IS IN RIGHT NOW LITERALLY BLOWS UP
Tumblr media
AND LET ME JUST BE CLEAR THAT YEAH MANY PEOPLE WANTED AN AWAKENING FROM KAIDO, OR THEY WANTED MORE, AND I UNDERSTAND IT AND I WOULDN'T BE MAD IF HE DOES GET ONE BUT IF THIS IS THE WAY KAIDO IS DOWN?? NOT MAD AT ALL, HE LITERALLY DIED IN LAVA THE SAME WAY ODEN WAS BOILED TO DEATH. PERFECT PARALLEL.
AND THEN MOMONOSUKE GOES DOWN TO THE FLOWER CAPITAL TO ANNOUNCE THE END OF THE WAR AND EVERYONE GOES WITH HIM
Tumblr media
HIYORI, DENJIRO, RAIZO, EVERYONE ALL OF THE SCABBARDS TO ANNOUNCE THE END OF KAIDO AND OROCHI'S WRATH AND IT'S TIME IT IS FINALLY TIME
Tumblr media
TO ANNOUNCE THE SHOGUN OF WANO
KOZUKI MOMONOSUKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE LET¨S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOMOOOOOOO
AND LET ME BE CLEAR. YES. I UNDERSTAND YOU WANT KAIDO TO GET UP. YES SOME PEOPLE DIDNT LIKE THE PUNCH YES YES YES BUT OH MY GOD IMAGINE GOING TO ALL OF THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE, FOR TWENTY LONG YEARS, HAD TO LIVE WITH SUFFERING AND PAIN AND STARVATION AND POVERTY UNDER THE WRATH OF KAIDO AND OROCHI... TO TELL THEM THAT I'S FINALLY OVER. THAT THEIR PAIN AND THEIR SUFFERING IS FINALLY OVER, ONLY FOR KAIDO TO COME BACK??? IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT???? TO TORMENT THESE POOR CITIZENS MORE THAN THEY ALREADY ARE TORMENTED????
anyways... no break but we already know this because enxt chapter comes out in.... less than 12 hours. see you then.

One Piece 1053
So I have a lot of feelings about this chapter. Overall, I really enjoyed it. It was a fun little chapter for the most part. From the poor chief putting everything he had into making the perfect menu for the entire party only for him to learn that Jimbei is the only one who could bother making an appearance, to the wonderful celebrations going on all around Wano. It reminded me a lot of the celebration parties that we saw on Cocoyoshi, and part of that is because there was a lot of similarities between the two arcs. This isn’t the first country we have seen Luffy and the others liberate. However one thing that Nami’s home and Wano had in common was the people KNEW they were being subjugated. Alabasta, Dressrosa, and even Punk Hazzard had no idea that their leaders were enslaving them. While not as long as some of the other celebrations, we can see how much the people are putting into it. Seeing Luffy, Yamoto, and Chopper running through the streets devouring food; Hiyori playing Moon Princess for the public and mentioning the Ninja-pirate-mink-samurai alliance which the people know nothing about (because Luffy asked to be kept a secret); seeing Kidd trying to fight Luffy for a title Luffy knows nothing about and Luffy just roping him into the celebratory mood, all the way to the fireworks celebration. And the fireworks celebration was awesome. Sanji, Nami, and Shinobu are cheering together; Zoro is drinking with Franky, Usopp, and Kinshiro; we see Kiku with Raizo and Toko, Carrott is finally reunited with the minks, the Yakuza, Tama and Speed, Kinemon and his wife Tsuru together again, even the Kidd pirates and Heart pirates. Also as some have pointed out, Sabo still has an active poster so that’s good. However, there were a few things in this chapter that really stood out and I’m probably going to get a little out of order here about them.
The first is the bounties. We see that the Navy are very much upset about Luffy’s new wanted poster, as they ordered for the ‘D’ in Luffy’s name to be removed and they had not given permission for the image of Luffy’s newest form to be used. However Morgans’ is still in charge of what gets printed and pretty much doesn’t care. Morgans was already a huge fan of Luffy’s and he’s obsessed with putting out the most ‘thrilling’ story. Luffy, Kidd, and Law’s bounties have jumped up to three billion a piece, which is a large jump and definitely painted a massive target on their backs. There was no mention of any changes to the other Strawhat’s bounties, any members of the other pirate crews, or anyone from Wano receiving bounties but that could be for a number of reasons from them not getting one to it just not being posted yet. I expect at the very least all the strawhat pirates getting some sort of increase due to this monumental feat. After all, the only other time a yonko has been brought down took the entire force of the Navy, the shichibachi, and the interference of a second Yonko to keep Shanks from arriving in time to stop the battle.
The next is Robin’s part. We see Robin has been exactly where we all suspected, in the basement of the castle likely looking for the poneglyph that I think Brook said was there. In fact we see a poneglyph is right behind Robin in that whole scene, but I think Brook said it wasn’t red so we need to find the Road Poneglyph soon. Robin has already read it since she is looking at the kokeshi dolls, and we see the Tengu, the man who made one of Zoro’s swords, arrive. He tells Robin that collecting the dolls was a hobby of his, something that we learned when he was first introduced, and that he’s been imprisoned down there for many years. He mentions that creating swords was also a hobby of his and reveals that he is really Kozuki Sukiyaki, Oden’s father and Hiyori and Momo’s grandfather. He had not told anyone that he survived and while some of the retainers probably figured it out, he has no intention of telling his grandchildren who he is. This likely means that Robin and Sukiyaki are the last two, and only two, to know how to read poneglyphs. They also mention that Pluton is currently in Wano.
This is really important. If the world government knows that Pluton is in Wano it could be part of why they want the country so bad. We’ve seen the length’s the navy and world government are willing to go to get their hands on that weapon. They tried to have Iceburg assassinated, they ensured Tom’s death, they imprisoned Franky and Robin and intended to torture them. In addition we saw what others in the world who know about Pluton would be willing to do for it. Crocodile enslaved an entire country and manipulated it’s people for years, became a shichibachi and even created an entire organization all with the intention of getting Robin to the poneglyph in order to find the location of Pluton. We know Pluton is a type of warship, and is one of the three most powerful ancient weapons in the world. And now we know for a fact that it is currently sitting in Wano.
The fact that Sukiyaki, the former shogun, was alive all this time is a little upsetting too. In a way it sort of parallels Riku, but while Riku had every intention of looking after his granddaughter, making her a princess and keeping her close, Sukiyaki has decided to continue looking after his grandchildren in secrecy. And the fact that he forged Zoro’s sword Kitetsu III is actually pretty neat. We know the Kozuki Clan and the Shimotsuki Clan had strong ties. Toko’s father Yasuie was a good friend of both the Shogun and rather fond of Oden. He also just died to ensure Momonosuke would be the next ruler of Wano and that the Shogun and Kaido’s rule would end. We know Ushimaru was a daimyo of Ringo and was so loyal to the Kozuki Family that he died for them. We also know Kozaburo, Koshiro’s father and Kuina’s grandfather, forged the swords Wado Ichimonji and Enma, the latter of which he considered his greatest blade and entrusted to the Kozuki family. I wish we could have seen more of that connection in Wano but I suppose it was a little much.
Next we got our new friend Green Bull. So apparently for the last week the Beast Pirates have been licking their wounds at the Former Prisoner Mine. Green Bull/Ryokugyu whose real name is apparently Aramaki is currently out there, using what appears to be a plant based devil fruit to drain Queen, King, and the other high ranking members of the crew. We don’t learn much about Ryokugyu, but we do see he can absorb nutrients through his devil fruit from people’s bodies, probably why he mentioned he hasn’t eaten anything in years. He also is a fan of alcohol, but good alcohol. He also is a huge Sakazuki fanboy. He just wants to be praised by his hero and decided the best way to do that is to bring him Luffy’s head. I was kinda hoping he would be an alright guy due to his and Isshio’s conversation before but I guess that was too much to hope for.
The last thing is the new four emperors. Luffy wasn’t a surprise, but the odd one was Buggy. Now Buggy being a new emperor is actually pretty cool, both for story telling purposes and in-universe. A few people have already pointed out that Oda has used Buggy as a way to sort of discredit some positions. For example, Buggy get’s made a Shichibachi just before they dismantle the entire position. In a way it’s kind of like saying that Yonko’s are no longer that big of a deal. At least to us readers.
In-universe though it kinda makes sense. We as the readers know a lot about Buggy. We know he’s mostly for show and he’s not really that strong. However let’s look at Buggy from the world of One Piece’s view. Despite Zoro, a renowned and professional bounty hunter, not knowing who Buggy was we see that Buggy was actually seen as a legitimate threat in the East Blue. In Romance Dawn the three most powerful pirates in the East Blue was Arlong and the Arlong Pirates with a twenty million berry bounty, Don Krieg and the Krieg pirates with seventeen million berries, and Buggy and the Buggy pirates with fifteen million. The only other ‘big name’ in the East Blue at that time was Kuro and the Black Cat pirates, and Kuro was worth sixteen million, only one million more than Buggy. Nami and Usopp had both heard of Buggy and even thought Luffy didn’t initially stand a chance against them. In addition we as the readers saw that Buggy was ruthless, and something that quickly added a little credence to his name was that we learned he had been to the Grand Line and made it back alive, something that we learned in the East Blue was a major feat that only the strong were capable of.
Now we know that the world government didn’t have that high of an opinion of the East Blue. Despite some very real threats coming out of the East Blue, it was generally regarded as the weakest sea. Therefore they didn’t really pay much attention to the people there. It’s probably why they never really bothered to look into Buggy’s background. When they arrested Buggy they didn’t even bother to discover much about him, just chucked him into Impel Down. And here is where the new legends of Buggy begin.
Buggy was one of the few to actually escape Impel Down. Then the Navy discovers that he not only served on the ship of the former king of the pirates, Roger, but he is also a blood brother’ to one of the four yonko’s. The public hear about Buggy when the Navy credits him as one of the three main ringleaders of the Impel Down escape. Then they see him during the War of Impel Down, sassing Shanks and even seeming to get respect from Whitebeard of all people (albeit it was because he had some really powerful people following him). Buggy has a massive crew now, made up with former prisoners of Impel Down and Baroque Work’s Officers. He has a number of crew that fall under him that practically made up a whole fleet. He even formerly had five giants under his command, something that has been shown again and again to be nothing to underestimate. So as far as the Navy and the rest of the world is concerned, Buggy is another powerhouse that escaped the East Blue, someone who like Arlong used the low importance the world set on the East Blue to escape notice until he was ready to reveal himself. So Buggy is made a Shichibachi. And from there his strength only continues to grow
We as the readers know that Buggy is nothing special. He is rather just a mediocre guy who happened to have connections with some of the most powerful and important people of his time. He isn’t strong, but he is good at using the reputation he gained to fake that strength by having extremely powerful people under his command. People who make up for his weaknesses
.
Overall I think it was a good set up for the finale Saga.

misunderstanding ; roronoa zoro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
↻ angst, fluff, jealousy, misunderstanding obv, cussing, hurt/comfort, wano spoiler, suggestive if you squint hard enough, grammatical errors
↻ pairing ↬ zoro x fem!reader!
anonymous asked: hi! is it okay if i request a scenario/drabble/hc of the reader getting jealous and hurt over how protective zoro was being of hiyori, then she sees them in the shed and she rationalizes that it was a misunderstanding, but when the dust settles after onigashima and they have their typical victory banquet, she sees them being all close or sth, just laughing and it just hurts. could it pls have a happy ending? 🤍 if not, then could you write the reader being jealous/insecure of sabo and koala seeing their close friendship and bond. again with a happy ending or my heart won't be able to take it 💀😂 you can decide!! thank you!! sorry if this was so specific!
a/n since i've alrdy wrote for sabo with the same scenario for more than one time, i'm gonna try my best and write up your first request🚶‍♀ i just watched wano arc thats why it took so long. and i definitely encourage for everyone to be more specific in their requests <3 idk if you meant a canon victory banquet or smtg bcs im just starting the 3rd act but here you go anyway, i hope its good :)
the moment you slid the door open, an awkward silent hangs in the air. brook looks at you, and back at the woman who was laying next to your lover. “who is that?! w-w-what’s going on?!” he shrieked.
you could feel the jealousy boiling in your heart. it’s an ugly feeling. you hated it. but you knew that it was simply a misunderstanding. there was no way that he would cheat on you. the man was way too loyal for that.
but still, you couldn’t help with what you’re feeling. your ears rang for a moment, looking around the shed. anywhere else but him. “it’s not what you think―”
“i know,” you answered, completely cutting him off. you could see him breathing out a relief sigh. he quickly get out of the woman's grip and walked towards you.
you could see his eyes taking in your feature, looking for any sorts of injury which you didn’t have. deciding to put your jealousy aside, you pulled him into a hug, careful not to press on his injuries.
“i’m glad you’re okay...” you said, hiding your face at the crook of his neck. just as he was about to get comfortable in your hold, you pulled away from him and slap his arm roughly.
“that hurt!”
“that’s what you get for worrying me! god, you’re so reckless!” you scolded him. “sorry for worrying you...”
“you should be sorry! you had no idea how worried i was when i saw your wanted poster!” you continued again before sighing. you could see his eyes twinkle with amusement.
“what?”
“nothing... it’s just... you look cute when you’re all fired up,” he said with a smirk. gosh, how can he be so?!
before your interactions could go any further, the skeleton beside you cleared his throat. except that he doesn’t have a throat―
“sorry to interrupt this and all, but don’t you think you should introduce us to her?” brook asked politely.
.
everything had happened so fast. one second, you were just getting to know hiyori and otoko. the next second, you were running to chase for zoro who was going after hiyori.
“oi! you guys are still on the run! what would happen if one of orochi’s assassin happened to find you?!” zoro scolded her. your heart panged with a feeling of jealousy.
she knew that zoro was right, so she decided to listen to him and let him catch up to otoko. you didn’t stop running. instead, you continued to follow him from behind.
you were more worried about him getting caught by orochi’s forces or the beast pirates.
you ran and ran until you arrived at the flower capital, where tonoyasu being tied up to the long pole where he was displayed for everyone to see.
“toko!” you called out along with zoro. sure, you had only spent less an hour with her, but she already have a place in your heart. you could hear her laughter, and the next thing you knew, gun shots was all you could hear.
.
you sighed softly, brushing the girl's pink hair out of her face. she had been crying all the way to sleep.
it probably still hurts her if she wakes up anytime soon. you sighed once more. zoro, who had been sitting next to you knitted his eyebrows together.
“you okay?” he finally asked when you let out another sigh. your head snapped up to meet with his eye, heart beating a little bit faster from the shock he gave you.
“sorry, i... it's just- sad to think that she doesn't have any family left...” you said, which he nodded. “i still have everyone on the crew. and everyone is like a family to me,”
you were expecting some sort of response from him. anything, really. but you knew that zoro doesn't know how to express those words out. he only knows how to show them through actions. which is more effective in telling.
but he was staring in your eye, listening to you intently. and that was enough.
.
you flopped onto the ground, letting the victory washes over you. a single tear slipped from your eye, feeling relief.
you caught the sight of your boyfriend, walking towards your way but was stopped by a certain oiran who hugged him affectionately.
you knew that she was only paying her gratefulness towards him. it still didn't stop from your heart to tug painfully.
a day passed by, and everyone was already setting up the victory banquet for the straw hats. knowing your crew, every one of them would be ecstatic due to the food, drinks and of course, woman.
you chuckled at the thought of sanji losing too much blood because or attractive woman again.
it really didn't take them long to prepare the banquet. the next thing you knew, the banquet was already starting.
looking around at the lively atmosphere made you smile. you were glad that luffy accepted to help momonosuke. it was one of the reason you followed luffy as captain.
zoro somehow found you, his lips quirking into a small smile. “you look beautiful,” he complimented. you felt your cheeks getting hot. though the two of you had been in a relationship for so long, a compliment from him wasn't as often as you'd like to think.
he was a man of action after all. “thank you. you look beautiful as well,”
your compliment had clearly caught him off guard when you saw the red tint dusting his cheeks slightly. he took your hand, pulling you away from the crowds and prying ears.
he sat down on the bench, pulling you along with him, resulting in you to land on his lap. he nuzzled into your neck, sighing in content.
“y'know, i can smell your jealousy from miles away. but... thank you for trusting in me,” his hand that was resting on your waist moved teasingly on your back.
“don't you think that i deserved a little reward?”
a/n god i hate this 😭

Jumping back a bit in time to various scenes over the few days passed over in 1083, so that's the trick of 1084!I love the episode so so so much!
Most, though not all, of the scenes this episode focus on showing the SHs saying their farewells to the people they met and the friends they made in Wano. Due to Carrot's arrival, and following adorable Garchu montage, we don't actually see the Akazaya at the ruins of Oden Castle saying their farewells, maintaining that blank and the mystery of what we don't show from the manga.
Full post below the cut.
Tumblr media
Perfect that Carrot is the one who is arriving here. More so with Denjiro and Kiku being the two Carrot pushes past. Those two being the first and last Akazaya we properly meet in Wano. It further supports the reading that Kiku's scenes after the battle are written to be deliberately weird. No-showing the Ryokugyu fight then not having remorse over it or offering an explanation for her absence in particular. That oddity paired with her not having a katana with her in this episode, where Kawamatsu and Denjiro do, makes you wonder if she may no longer be a retainer, and is just wrapping up some final responsibilities in Wano after the battle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love Kiku being the one to speak up about Izo, Ashura, and Oden being in their hearts here, before the others say anything. She has a very loving heart. And a mind of her own, being able to make her own decisions and form her own opinions. Which is why I think it's fair to suggest that she doesn't necessarily have to go along with what Denjiro says about rebuilding Wano, if she decides that going with the Straw Hats is what she would like to do instead. They are friends after all. Luffy telling them to not be so formal is great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luffy's eyes being covered as Izo and Ashura are mentioned speaks volumes. It is clear that he is deeply affected. Especially with Izo being a crew member of Ace's, and a brother to one of his best samurai buddies. It is very important to Luffy. And Nami, Chopper, and Brook feel that as well.
Hiyori and Toko saying goodbye to Zoro and saying they will miss him, Osome saying goodbye to Sanji and almost asking him something, Luffy and Tama saying their farewells and promising to meet again. Each scene works so well as things Kiku/the Akazaya could have said to Luffy before Carrot's arrival at the grounds where Oden Castle once stood, though those interactions all go to others who got to know the Straw Hats. Again, maintaining that the most of the Akazaya haven't been seen saying farewell to the crew.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I especially like Osome mentioning she wanted to properly thank Sanji for rescuing her, it's sweet and keeps with the parallels scenes about other Wano friends have to Kiku/the Akazaya, as we have yet to see Kiku properly thanking Usopp for his role in rescuing her. Leaves the door open for another similar flashback to those in this episode I feel.

The Voyage So Far: Wano (Part One)
east blue (1 | 2) || alabasta (1 | 2) || skypiea || water 7 || enies lobby || thriller bark || paramount war (1 | 2) || fishman island || punk hazard || dressrosa (1 | 2) || whole cake island || wano (1 | 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
shirahoshi seeing the sun for the first time is really a relatively minor and understated thing, among all the chaos and revelations of reverie, but it strikes me as one of the most meaningful little moments in the arc.
Tumblr media
i LOVE the luffy fanclub. i love that a meeting of the world leaders winds up being a who’s-who with assorted friends of one of the world’s most notorious criminals, and it brings me SO much joy to see them meeting each other and being able to connect. i feel the same way about coby and rebecca meeting.
in general, and i think i said this at marineford too, i love that the one piece world is developed and interconnected and alive enough to allow for these sorts of interactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
fucked up that this was almost a hundred chapters ago and we still have no clue what the fuck was up with this, isn’t it?
i do find the introduction of im fascinating. up until this point we’ve had two presumed final villains- blackbeard and akainu- who were first established pretty far back at jaya and enies lobby (in robin’s flashback) respectively. meanwhile, im isn’t even seen until chapter nine hundred and something. it feels very late-game, but at the same time, their existence doesn’t contradict anything previously established, and in fact jives pretty well with a lot of information more recently revealed in dressrosa.
in any case, when in doubt i do trust oda knows what he’s doing when handling his story, and i’m very excited to see what he does with this.
Tumblr media
wano is SO PRETTY. i mentioned this before in fishman island, but i think wano is definitely the prettiest setting in the series to date. i think it’s obvious oda was both very excited to draw it and put a lot of work and research into his depiction of it, and wow does it pay off. wano is so bursting with life and detail, and frequently looks like an ukiyo-e painting come to life, and just- wow wow wow.
Tumblr media
i love zoro and luffy’s reunion so much... i love how happy they are to see each other. it’s only been, what, a couple weeks in-universe? but luffy is pulling the full tackle-hug like he did for sabo at dressrosa. i love them.
Tumblr media
i really like the outfits in wano, too!! zoro’s ronin look in particular i think suits him very well, and i also love luffy’s patchy yukata and robin’s geisha getup and they’re just very cool. this also applies to the non-strawhat wano characters, for the record, and kind of ties back to what i was just saying about wano being so full of detail. it has a very specific look, and everything from the outfits to the way things like the fire and the waves are drawn folds very neatly into that aesthetic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as i’m writing this i just finished on the paramount war posts, so with that fresh on my mind, i have to say i really like the way ace (or rather, his memory) is incorporated into wano. he’s not really a major presence- that is, the fact that he was there before luffy has no real bearing on the plot. but there are people who knew and cared about him and remember him fondly, tama and yamato, and it just really helps add to this feeling that ace was a person and his life and death had real and lasting affects.
and it adds, too, to the fact that even if it took ace way too long to realize it, he was so thoroughly loved everywhere he went.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have a lot of thoughts on the intersection of food and heroism in one piece (i keep trying to compile a coherent meta post on the subject and mostly failing). but i’ll settle for saying that in wano luffy is a hero by his own definition, as someone who shares food with others, and i doubt he realizes that, but i think it’s really interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i know luffy’s fight with kaidou is kind of controversial in fandom but i love it, personally. it feels like a logical outcome for luffy to get his ass kicked the first time he tries to go up against a yonkou singlehandedly! he got wrecked when he tried to throw down with a shichibukai the first time, too, and this is just the next logical step from that.
luffy’s always been an underdog starting from nowhere and working his way up and up and up, and i love that for him. of course he’s going to get messed up the first time he tries punching an entire order of magnitude above his weight class. and then he’s going to get up and try again, and again, and again until he wins.
Tumblr media
the act structure of wano is really neat, i think. it helps such a long and complicated arc feel a lot more structured and less interminable than it might otherwise, and it also gives specific breaks where we can cut away to the story happening on the outside world.
Tumblr media
honestly i really like the whole udon prison segment. it’s fun! i like it for similar reasons i like the colosseum mini-arc in dressrosa, honestly, which is that there’s no real stress because we know luffy is the scariest person there by a country mile so we can just watch him go ham, and that’s fun. it consistently cracks me up that absolutely nobody is worried luffy’s in jail. they’re all just like “yeah, he’ll be fine.” and they’re right! he’s having the time of his life!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
wano’s cast is fascinating, because almost nobody is who they first appear to be. almost everyone is wearing masks, whether literal or not- fitting, for an arc structured after a kabuki play. everyone is playing roles, from hiyori to denjirou to kanjurou to yasuie, and everyone lies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this entire sequence at orochi’s party is one of my favorites in the whole arc- in fact, it was my favorite, until we reached a certain part i’ll get to in the next post. everything from komurasaki standing up for toko and slapping orochi to denjirou “killing” her to robin getting caught by the oniwabanshu and dissolving into petals to nami calling down a massive lightning bolt to cover their escape- it’s really good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’ve written extensively before about the smile fruits and the themes of smile and laughter in one piece and how important the freedom to feel and express emotion is. suffice it to say that for all the atrocities orochi commits against the people of wano, it’s feeding the smile fruits to the people of ebisu town that is his greatest crime, and the revelation of just what happened to those poor people ratchets up the tragedy of wano tenfold.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i do think it’s interesting to think about how if denjirou had been just a little less committed to his role, zoro would’ve killed orochi right here. it really drives home that orochi is nothing- he’s weak, he’s cowardly, he’s just lucky and clever and cruel enough to be able to get much more powerful people to do his work for him.
it’s infuriating that someone like him has been able to hold such power over the lives of the people of wano and ruin them so thoroughly, and that’s exactly the point.
Tumblr media
wano is the arc where oda says you Will care about the supernovas and i’m like yeah
Tumblr media
hey, another of my all-time favorite luffy panels!! i honestly just think this one sums him up as a character in a line more than almost any other- “i’m always free.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
just look at the detail on kidd’s metal hand holy shit holy shit. on occasion certain panels jump out at me that remind me that oda really is just, a genius at drawing on a technical level, even setting aside his writing and storytelling chops, and this is one of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
oda is really, really good at creating the sense of a darkest hour- a time when all hope seems lost. the other best example in the series is in water seven, when the crew seems to be falling to pieces, merry is marked for death, robin’s gone, and the aqua laguna is coming. here, too- nobody comes to meet the akazaya nine, and the one chance they’ve waited twenty years and staked their lives on seems in danger of slipping through their fingers-
but the point of making it so all seems lost is so that when hope does appear, it shines all the brighter, and feels all the more triumphant. it’s always darkest before the dawn, and we all know how wano has been waiting for the dawn.

Zoro & Sandai Kitetsu
There is something that was bugging me about Zoro’s swords for a long time and now, the Wano arc helped put thoughts in proper perspective. Namely four out of five named katanas used by Roronoa are, in fact, a heirlooms; a burden of someone’s else dreams or ambition or honor that Zoro (consciously or not) carry on while Sandai Kitetsu is the only one sword truly and just his. Because the same as the sword was chosen by Zoro, Zoro himself was chosen by Kitetsu,
The best known Roronoa’s sword, Wado Ichimonji in fact belonged to Kuina who died the night after she and Zoro made a promise that one of them must become the world’s best swordsman. He begged Kuina’s father to gift him with her sword and to honor Kuina’s dream, he created an unique fighting style - Santoryu.
Tumblr media
Zoro could just replace one of his swords with Wado and yet Zoro’s fighting style is a fusion of his two-sword style trained since childhood and one-sword style used by Kuina. Which is his way to stay faithful to a promise made between them and maybe a promise between him and Kuina’s father too. That way Kuina - represented by Wado - gets stronger with each of Zoro’s fights and with him, one day will become the best swordmaster. Zoro has carried on her dream since childhood and in fact, their shared promise is both a great motivation AND burden. What was noted by Mihawk  (What burdens you so?) and something Zoro himself was well aware (“I may only have three swords, but the weight of our swords are completely different!“).
Wado is as much a memento of his deceased friend as much a burden to carry on alone. It’s Zoro’s most precious sword and at the same I think it will never truly belong to him. Wado was and always will be Kuina’s. He was not chosen by the great katana - he begged for that  sword and it was given to him by Kuina’s father. Because Zoro cared so much for their vow, when Koushirou dismissed Kuina’s dream when she was still alive. Koushirou granted the precious katana to a determined boy, so his daughter’s dream (and which it, a part of Kuina) could live on.
Wado is Zoro's most precious possession, but it is a “borrowed” katana that never truly was meant for him. It was Kuina who should carry on the white katana. Zoro only carried it in place of her, because she never had truly a chance to spread her wings. Thus, Wado is a memento, a shared dream, a burden and second chance (for Kuina, and maybe for Koushiro too).
Then we have YUBASHIRI, given to Zoro by Ipponmatsu in Loguetown
Tumblr media
Ipponmatsu freely gave Zoro this katana as an apology for looking down on him, once Roronoa proved how well skilled and strong willed swordsman he was by testing his luck against cursed blade. The given sword served him well, up until Enies Lobby, where Yubashiri was destroyed by marine captain Su, a man with devil fruit power of rusting.
Ipponmatsu did not tell Zoro that Yubashiri was in fact his own family heirloom - something pointed out by shop owner’s wife:
Tumblr media
but once questioned about the decision, Ipponmatsu asked back “what is wrong with a man entrusting his dream to another man?!”
Tumblr media
what implies that Yubashiri, like Wado, carried inside someone’s else unfulfilled dream of greatness.
In Thriller Bark, Yubashiri was buried alongside remains of Brook’s first nakama while its place was taken by SHUSUI.
Shusui was a black sword that belonged to legendary samurai, Ryuma. In Thriller Bark it was wielded by Ryuma’s zombie (with Brook’s shadow) and once Zoro saw the blade, he wanted it for himself, to replace destroyed Yubashiri and was willing to take it from the enemy's dead body. Though the fight was relatively short, Zoro’s skills were acknowledged by Ryuma and in result, Shusui was given to pirate.
Tumblr media
Zoro honored his opponent by taking sword and being willing to pretend the match never happened.
Tumblr media
Similar to Sandai Kitetsu, Zoro both chose a sword and was chosen (accepted) by the blade. But unlike Kitetsu, Shusui, as the most precious treasure of Wano country, couldn’t truly belong to him. The katana served its master well and Roronoa appreciated it very much, but since Dressrosa arc, he was constantly nagged by people of Wano to give it back. He didn’t care for their complaints and did not plan to do so, yet once asked by Kozuki Hiyori to return it to its rightful place, Zoro finally agreed. Because in the end he respected the dead swordmaster and how much the black sword meant to people of Wano. It was a sacred symbol, a heirloom of legendary samurai Ryuma while he was an outsider. Although Zoro proved his worth to Ryuma zombie, the sword (and Ryuma’s body) was stolen in the first place and Hiyori was willing to give up memento of her late father (personal treasure) for Shusui (a national relic). Such sacrifice proved how much Ryuma’s sword meant to people of Wano and Zoro, despite his claim, returned the black blade to where it belonged - asking only to let him visit Ryuma’s grave once the battle is over.
Shusui was another heirloom, a sword burdened by past and its meaning. It served Zoro well, but it couldn’t truly belong to him.
For returning Wano’s national treasure, Hiyori promised Zoro no less great katana - ENMA.
Tumblr media
A legendary sword given to Hiyori by her late father, Kozuki Oden that is said to be the only blade that even injured Kaido. A wonderful gift, but the same as previous swords, it is someone else's heirloom passed to Zoro. Another memento of a dead person. Another burden to carry on.
While Zoro trained with his new sword, Tenguyama Hitetsu (the creator of Sandai Kitetsu) told him the story behind Enma - Oden’s sword and Kuina’s Wado were birthed by the same man, Shimotsuki Kozaburo. Who, ironically, is Kuina’s grandfather according to SBS. What Zoro may have known now, since he did met Kozaburo as a child.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Hitetsu assumed that Hiyori perhaps recognized Wado and because of that offered Zoro her heirloom as a replacement for Shusui. I personally think the reason was more selfish than that. Once Zoro saved her, Hiyori said there was a prophecy that “in time of the resurgence of the Kozuki line, strong, kind samurai from across the seas would come to our aid” and Zoro fits perfectly. Even more, since Zoro’s hometown, the Shimotsuki Village is in fact strongly connected to Wano by Kozaburo no less.
Tumblr media
Hiyori, as Oden’s daughter, wants Wano to be a free, safe country again but for this to happen, Kaido must be defeated first. Zoro already proved to be a reliable ally. He came To Wano with her missing brother and Kinemon. He saved her and Toko from Orochi’s assassin and later, from enemy attack once the fight broke out after Yasuie’s death. He is strong (something she saw for herself) and to some degree has the samurai feeling about himself.
Above everything else, Zoro will fight in the upcoming war against Kaido for the Kozuki clan even though he (like all Straw Hats) has no real obligation to her family. Whether she believed in prophecy or not, by passing to Zoro her family heirloom, Hiyori burdened him with her hopes and dreams for victory and justice for her murdered parents and for Wano country as a whole. She gave an outsider Oden's precious sword that can injure Kaido and by that, placed faith in Zoro. She can’t use the sword, she can’t fight in battle, but Zoro will carry on Oden’s (and her) wish to protect Wano into battle.
Was Zoro aware of such a possible burden? Who knows. Still, he accepted the blade despite its dangerous nature - and any eventual burden (someone else’s unfilled dreams and hopes) to carry on.
Frankly, Enma and Sandai Kitetsu have a lot in common. Both are dangerous blades that drive weak swordsmen into madness and/or ultimately lead to their death. Both need to be tamed. And Zoro likes them very much, despite warnings of other people. Even manga presents their “introduction” as accepted and appreciated swords by Roronoa in similar way:
Tumblr media
Yet there are two major differences between Kitetsu and Enma, what also are true for the three previous swords too.
First, already mentioned and explained the matter of heirloom and connected to that “burden” Zoro carries on alongside. In the case of Enma, once the battle is over and Wano saved, all the faith and hopes put in Zoro by Kozuki Hiyori through the Enma should not burden him anymore. Yet since Hiyori entrusted him the memento of her father, Roronoa will need to make sure to never bring shame to her (and by extension, the Kozuki clan) in later adventures & fights he will face one day. But frankly, this is the same with all of his swords bestowed to him by people who were important to him or which he shared mutual respect. It is strictly connected at core to sword fighting philosophy; to be worth of great blade.
Secondly, Wado Ichimonji, Yubashiri, Shusui and Enma, all those swords are desired and appreciated by swordsmen all over the world while Kitetsu, as a cursed blade, was not wanted. Kitetsu was feared by people, put in barrels between low quality swords in hopes to get rid of it. Even sword maniac like Tashigi, once learning the truth about the katana, did not want that blade despite its high grade and low price on it. She was even sorry for insisting previously Zoro should take it. Kitetsu drove previous owners into horrible deaths to the point “you will not find a swordsmen who’d dare to use a Kitetsu these days”:
Tumblr media
Zoro felt that the sword was cursed, before Ipponmatsu had a chance to explain why Kitetsu had such a low price on it. And after learning the horrible truth, he decided to take the blade. The unwanted, bloodthirsty, cursed blade that brings madness and death because no one else would dare to use it. Zoro liked the challenge. Oh, he liked it so much he decided to test his luck (fate) against the curse of Kitetsu, putting his swordmaster future at stake.

The same as Zoro chose Kitetsu, the sword chose him. Like Ipponmatsu said, the sword chooses its owner. And yes, Zoro wanted to have Wado and Shusui but these blades were heirlooms burdened with someone’s dreams and greatness while Kitetsu was the unwanted, dangerous blade with a horrible past that Zoro faced only with his own strong will. No hidden promises to carry on, no ambitions or honor or hopes passed on him by previous owners. No legendary status to live up. Like Wado. Like Shusui. Like Yubashiri. Like Enma.
Sandai Kitetsu is this wild, bloodthirsty sword that was challenged by Zoro and decided to spare this insane man who looked at it, felt the cursed nature and did not throw it away but appreciated it. Something that, I imagine, didn’t happen in years. And there is very strong bond between Roronoa and Kitetsu, because Zoro always can tell apart the cursed blade from other swords
Tumblr media
and he kept Kitetsu usually in left (dominant) hand during fight. All those little details give the impression Kitetsu is much more spiritually connected to Zoro’s core than Wado.
In short, Sandai Kitetsu was the only masterless sword Zoro picked solely by and for himself that did not burden him with sentiments, past promises or hopes. And though the sword was “problematic child”, its demonic nature seems to suit Zoro’s own very well.

A/N: encouraged to post this thanks to @pinkgentlemenunicorn and anon!
i wrote this a couple of nights ago when i was about to fall asleep when a field of spring was stuck in my head and all that i could picture was hiyori playing it while zoro watched her. can also be found on ao3 under the username sunflowerjohnny
SPOILER WARNING!
The orange glow of the fire hissed gently.
Zoro blearily blinked his eyes open and pushed himself upwards only to groan in pain. His muscles throbbed, reminding him that he was still injured. Taking a deep breath, Zoro managed to pull himself up into a sitting position and scan the room.
The window to his left indicated that it was already night time. Though what time in the night, was unclear to Zoro. He assumes, however, that it was late in the night as the stars shone brightly and the moon appeared in a large full moon, no clouds in sight.
Zoro then looked downwards and was a bit startled to find Toko sound asleep. Her head was resting on his left thigh, pink hair messily sprawled underneath. Her wide grin was still present, even in her sleep, and Zoro wondered if it was a result from a traumatic experience or the girl just simply loved to grin. He knew that Luffy always smiled, and often grinned as well, but not on the same level as this pink haired child.
He continued to scan the room. Everything seemed to be in order from when before he had passed out (he seemed to be doing it a lot these past couple of days. Perhaps it was from the fish he had eaten and the water he had drank from the river. He wasn’t a doctor like Chopper or Tra-o but he knew enough that poisoned water can weaken even the strongest of men. He sighed at his carelessness) and was suspicious to find Komu- No, Hiyori, she said her name was Hiyori and was Momonosuke’s younger (older?) sister. Zoro had contemplated telling her the whereabouts of her brother, who was still a child, and about all of the adventures that they’ve shared. But, knowing that he wasn’t the most emotionally intelligent person amongst the Strawhats, Zoro opted to remain silent. Least he wanted Hiyori to freak out and burst through the door and out into the snow looking for her brother - nowhere in sight.
Gently lifting Toko’s head so as to not wake her, he placed it delicately (as delicately as Swordsmen can be) on the futon. Zoro then went to search for the brightly green haired woman.
The hut they were in wasn’t small nor big. It was a one story hut with three rooms. The room Zoro just stepped out from was, he assumed, the bedroom. He went to the first room on his right to find that it was the kitchen. Scanning the area, he failed to spot Hiyori and was also disappointed at the lack of food and supplies in the kitchen. He bet that Luffy would be even more disappointed and would wail and whine for hours until he was fed. Muffling his chuckle, Zoro stepped out and went to the next room.
The last room he stepped into was another bedroom. It was smaller and there were no fire nor candles lit, only the full moon being the source of light. And in it was the green haired woman. She had her back to him and didn’t seem to notice Zoro’s presence. Zoro carefully took a step forward - his arm stretched out to lay on her shoulder and her name on his lips, when his ears were greeted by sorrowful yet calming music.
Now, Zoro wasn’t educated in music so he didn’t know a lot of musical instruments. But, he was certain that he had heard this kind of tool when he first arrived in Wano and a mother had informed her son that it was called a flute. It was high pitched and almost sounded like a little girl’s wail. Zoro wasn’t sure how that kind of instrument could be entertaining but hearing the melody coming from the woman before him, he lowered his hand and rested his back against the wall and watched her.
The glow of the moonlight illuminated Hiyori, making her skin sparkle in a way that was brighter than any of the diamonds Nami owns. Her hair, which was usually a bright green color, had a light blue hue surrounding it. Her back was straight though Zoro could tell that her muscles were relaxed.
He was unfamiliar with the musical piece that she was playing but he quickly began to notice its effect on him. He, too, found his muscles relax and his posture slouch downwards. Normally, Zoro would be on high alert and would be hyper aware of his surroundings, ready to fight in case an enemy had found him. However, Zoro couldn’t sense any threatening aura and allowed for himself to be engulfed by the tranquility of the flute.
The green haired Swordsman noticed that Hiyori had played the same musical piece, his eyes furrowed as he paid attention to what the music sounded like.
As mentioned, Zoro wasn’t emotionally intelligent but he could tell when someone’s crying for their loved ones. It was as if Hiyori was calling out for her brother, hoping that the musical piece she was playing would somehow guide him to where they were hiding. And a pang of guilt strongly punched Zoro in the stomach for keeping the whereabouts of her brother a secret. Though, he had to. It was important that they carried out with their plan of a rebellion without any distractions. Zoro was uncertain of how helpful Hiyori could be. Now, he wasn’t the kind of man to judge people based on appearances but it didn’t seem like Hiyori could fight. Unlike Okiku.
Hiyori was...delicate. Though, something in her azure eyes told Zoro that she had suffered, a lot. She had suffered, fought and had survived. Perhaps not in the similar manner as Zoro and his crew but enough for Hiyori to be considered strong. A sudden and intense urge to teach her how to wield a sword and learn how to fight suffocated Zoro. Remembering the look of fear she had as she ran away for her and Toko’s lives filled his head and he felt his blood boil. He wasn’t going to be stuck in Wano forever and he knew that if they win against Kaido, nothing terrible would come in Hiyori and Toko’s way. But Zoro knew that wouldn’t last long either and Hiyori needed to defend herself and fight for her and Toko’s safety if need be.
The soft opening of the musical piece pulled Zoro from his thoughts and he focused on Hiyori.
She was beautiful, he couldn’t deny that.
Her beauty was the kind of beauty that would force anyone in her way to pay attention to her. Though, that didn’t make her a narcissist nor cold hearted. She was kind and humble. She even housed Zoro and cooked for him even though he was a stranger. Sure, it was a trade for her protection but people weren’t normally as kind. He couldn’t find such kindness unless he was with his Strawhat family. His heart strangely fluttered at the idea of having Hiyori join the Strawhats, though for what, he was uncertain.
Having had enough of his own thoughts, Zoro straightened up and pushed himself away from the wall and intentionally made his footsteps loud and his presence known.
Hiyori didn’t startle like he thought she would. Instead, she merely glanced over her shoulder, tilted her head in greeting and returned to stare out the window.
Taking a few steps forward, Zoro sat down next to Hiyori and listened to her prayers to the moon.
Zoro didn’t know how many hours had gone by as he sat on the cold wooden floor listening to Hiyori play but the sky was beginning to turn into paler shades of indigo and he assumed it was dusk. He was both baffled and amazed by Hiyori’s ability to continue playing without taking any breaks or drink water. Finally, when she was done with her prayers, she detached her lips from the instrument. Zoro’s eyes watching the movement.
“Thank you.” Was all she said as she smiled up at him.
And Zoro was drowning in the overwhelming urge to cup her cheek in his large hand and kiss her naturally pouty lips. Shocked by his own thoughts, Zoro quickly sat up and turned his back to the still sitting woman, who blinked at him curiously.
“You should drink some water.” His words came out in a rush as he marched towards the door, “Goodnight.”
Had Zoro turned, he would’ve seen the way Hiyori’s lips turned upwards in an amused smile and her eyes twinkle with mirth. But instead, he continued on his way and laid back down on the futon with Toko laying face front on his stomach. Closing his eyes, Zoro ignored his rapidly beating heart and the rush of heat to his ears.
