I was browsing through YouTube and saw an ad for a video that honored Spanish animators. And two of the animations shown were from Dogtanian! Both the original series and Return of Dogtanian.

Thank you Tongal for keeping Dogtanian from falling into obscurity!

Early in the week, Rob traveled to Delaware with producer Sean-Micheal to shoot for an architecture firm. The job was to create ads for the firm featuring new construction from a local community college. Upon his return, we began to sort all the media and do the file transfers. It was a heavy shoot with tons of 4k60fps footage, so altogether the transfers took a few hours. In the meantime, we worked on more editing for Todays Builder, filling in broll footage with stock sourced from across the internet. I found this experience interesting because I got to see how much random stock footage goes into professional grade commercials.

We also put together several pitches for possible jobs through Tongal. It seems that H&R Block is in the middle of a strong marketing push, so there was several opportunities, some of which were very loose and allowed for some creativity. I look forward to hearing back about our pitches, I really felt confident about some of them!

💥 Flashback Fender Friday, The Beach Boys Edition: that time in 2013 when Del Breckenfeld and I partnered with Fender, Universal Music Enterprises and Tongal to create a guitar solo contest for the (previously unreleased) track “Goin’ To The Beach”…pickguard artwork based on Mark London’s inspired vintage yearbook design for the ‘Made In California’ box set. The Grand Prize Fender pictured here (signed by five principal band members) was a coveted American Made Stratocaster. It’s believed that under a dozen of these custom ‘Made In California’ pickguards were created for the campaign. The Beach Boys - Sounds Of Summer (remastered & expanded) will be released Friday, June 17. The Expanded Edition of ‘Sounds Of Summer’ features 80 key tracks over the course of their storied career, all newly remastered, with 24 new mixes including 4 first-time stereo mixes, and 20 new-and- improved stereo mixes, in some cases featuring the latest in stereo extraction technology. The set also features updated photos and all new liner notes. (sigh) Art contests ride this fine line between giving people an amazing opportunity to be directly noticed, and asking for free work from artists.  I’m no stranger to these, but usually the fine print doesn’t say anything specifically about owning everything submitted and you can’t post them anywhere at all? (not clear if contestants are fine to post them after the contest). At least if I still owned the rejected concept, I could use that in my portfolio or something. This depresses the hell out of me - I love the Universal Monsters, this contest is perfectly up my alley, and I’d kill - K I L L - to have my art seen by these people, but this is ridiculous. If they really seriously wanted new concepts to turn into new UM media, they’d just hire the panelists or something. This really appears to be taking advantage of people. I’m also not clear what the end goal of this is, is this to gauge interest? to see if fans still care? UMs are pop culture giants but, Dark Universe got canned, what is this really for if you’re not keeping it under wraps, and letting the cat out of the bag with a god damn art contest?? The even odder thing to me is, this Tongal company is responsible for this contest, not Universal Studios directly. Tongal seems to be some sort of social media advertising studio/production facility, working with a lot of great licenses.

I hope the panelists are aware of what these conditions are, and I wish the winners and contestants the best, but I’m heartbroken that I can’t, in good conscious, surrender my ideas for something so one-sided.
