detective comics #483
[ID: a full body pin-up of the ‘Batman Family’. In order, it features Alfred standing to the left with a white towel draped over his arm. Batman is standing slightly in front of him and has both hands on his hips while smiling triumphantly. A bit off to the right, Batgirl is also smiling and is leaning slightly against Commissioner Gordon, who has one of his hands up and is holding a pipe. Next to him, Robin stands with his arms crosssd and is beaming happily. They're all in the Batcave — with the giant 1970s Bat-computer behind them as the Batmobile is angled behind Alfred and Batman. In the far, left background — the Joker, Riddler, and Penguin are all in a barred cell. Blue cursive in the upper left corner reads, ‘Happy Anniversary from the Whole Batman Family!’ END ID]

Alien – A NECA Toys korhatáros történelme 3. rész
Folytatjuk a NECA tematikus szortimentjével, ami egy kicsit rebrandelt kiadásokat jelent a valóságban. Mivel a szériát 2019/2020-ban folytatták, ezért megkapta a 40. évfordulós logót és ennek az égisze alatt futott a következő néhány figura is. Tekintsük végig, mely figurákkal kerülhettünk közelebbi kapcsolatba. Continue reading Alien – A NECA Toys korhatáros történelme 3. rész

“We Could Grow Up Together, E.T.”: 40 Years of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial
“We Could Grow Up Together, E.T.”: 40 Years of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial
I have read only one film review that made me cry, and writing them often that’s quite surprising. Roger Ebert’s 10-year anniversary review of Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece E.T, written as a letter to his grandchildren as he watches it with them for their first time had me sobbing. It’s a sweet piece that hits the nail on the head of why E.T is still so memorable and prevalent even now, a whole…

Are there any non-fiction you can recommend for people who are fascinated by your blog (especially the elements of dark eroticism, morbidity and horror)?
🖤 love that you are loving!
i will try to stick to non-fic (also refraining as best i can from re-recommending texts from previous asks but there is of course bound to be some overlap): - The Severed Head: Capital Visions, Julia Kristeva -> read about Aubrey Beardsley's illustrations for Salomé (x, x)
Tumblr media
and supplement w Baudelaire's Une Martyre "in which the narrator lovingly contemplates the beauty of a woman's severed head at rest upon a nightstand"
- Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty & Venus in Furs, Deleuze - The Sadeian Woman: And the Ideology of Pornography, Angela Carter - Aesthetic Sexuality: A Literary History of Sadomasochism, Romana Byrne - Perverse Desire and the Ambiguous Icon, Allen S. Weiss - "Must We Burn Sade?", Simone de Beauvoir -> read also about Erzsébet Báthory, the Bloody Countess. supplement your readings with Borowcyzk's Immoral Tales (1973), Julie Delpy's The Countess (2009), Alejandra Pizarnik's La Condesa Sangrienta and/or, if you have the stomach for it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lorna's death in Hostel Pt II (2007), inspired by the Countess^
- Anaïs Nin's diaries + Henry and June - Abject Eroticism in Northern Renaissance Art, Yvonne Owens
Hans Baldung Grien "gave powerful visual expression to late medieval tropes and stereotypes, such as the poison maiden, venomous virgin, the Fall of Man, 'death and the maiden' and other motifs and eschatological themes, which mingled abject and erotic qualities in the female body"
- Satanic Feminism: Lucifer as the Liberator of Woman in Nineteenth-Century Culture, Per Faxneld - The Library of Esoterica's Witchcraft - the biographical Taschen on H.R. Giger's oeuvre—biomechanical, Lovecraftian-tentacular fused limbs, bodies, systems, overtly phallic/yonic symbology, darkly psychedelic... very much fantastically erotic; I have my eye on the 40th Anniversary Edition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Giger, as we know, having designed the xenomorph from the Alien (1979) series to have an intensely sexual evolution:
Tumblr media
- DEFINITELY read about+explore ero guro (see also: Bataille's L'histoire de l'œil / Story of the Eye! though it is fiction)
Tumblr media
brief introductory articles here and here but it's truly so rich and decadent... delve into it!! film, lit, manga, history, so on... -> watch Nagisa Ōshima's In The Realm Of The Senses (1976) too
- if you can read French by any chance, Le Corps Souillé (The Soiled Body) by Eric Falardeau looks incredible; if not, this excerpt alone is delightfully provocative even in isolation - similarly, L'espirit de plaisir: Une histoire de la sexualité et de l’érotisme au Japon (The Spirit of Pleasure: A History of Sexuality and Eroticism in Japan) by Philippe Pons and Pierre-François Souyri is something I'm hoping might see an English translation
Tumblr media
^an excerpt from an interview with the authors
- The Art of Cruelty + The Red Parts, Maggie Nelson - Crucial Interventions: An Illustrated Treatise on the Principles & Practice of Nineteenth-Century Surgery, Richard Barnett - The Butchering Art, Lindsey Fitzharris - Death, Disease and Dissection, Suzie Grogan - The Theatre and Its Double, Antonin Artaud - Men, Women, and Chainsaws, Carol J. Clover - House of Psychotic Women, Kier-La Janisse - The Monstrous-Feminine, Barbara Creed - Dead Blondes and Bad Mothers, Sady Doyle - The Lady From The Black Lagoon, Mallory O'Meara

FORGOTTEN LIVES: Douglas Camfield
Tumblr media
Before we begin! Remember to get a copy of the Forgotten Lives Omnibus at this link! You've got until the 1st of September, so make sure you don't forget to buy the book!
To make up for lost time, today we'll be covering two Doctors - firstly we'll be covering one of the only Morbius Doctors to get an official appearance in expanded media. Lance Parkin returns to this character roughly twenty years after writing "Cold Fusion" that covered the Doctor's forgotten past. As a writer who's supported the idea for years, even naming his first story after the article he wrote about the Morbius Doctors, how does he handle this incarnation?
Douglas Camfield (1931-1984) directed a lot of TV, such as Terry Nation's Blake 7, Z Cars and Public Eye. His direction credits to Doctor Who are equally impressive - The Crusade, The Daleks' Master Plan, The Web of Fear and Inferno to name a few. If there was any face behind the scenes that deserved this cameo role, Camfield was near the top of the list.
Lance Parkin, now having grabbed the reins to this incarnation, comes in with a clear vision for who his Doctor is and what his era would be. The Camfield Doctor is something of a bounty hunter, working with his companion Dattany to avenge those they couldn't save. They do not share as much time together as I may first have liked, but the chemistry between the characters easily helps you picture how the two may work together. Paul Hanley compliments this personality by making the Doctor's outfit akin to a witch hunter, someone trying to stomp out evil.
The other stories show the Doctor like a political ambassador, as if he's acting on behalf of the Time Lords. In a canon where we now have the Fugitive Doctor and her exploits alongside and against Division, the Camfield Doctor feels like how the Doctor fights against Division. There is a malicious compliance to this Doctor, where he will complete a mission so long as it is his way - if he sees wrong being done then he will find a way to change it.
To be transparent... I didn't really pull to these stories, they're good but not what I personally look for (I do commend the worldbuilding done by Gareth Madgwick in his story, it paints that world vividly). However, unlike other Doctors, I will not be examining him too much, instead I want to discuss some lore. Unfortunately for me, that means having to face my greatest enemy - the Tardis Wiki.
Tumblr media
Now is the part where I go fully conspiracy. Where other Doctors here were built from the ground-up, this Doctor's appearance in "Cold Fusion" gives us more to work with on what this Doctor's life might've been like. It also has implications for the past Doctors we've covered so buckle in! (NOTE: Any inaccuracies about "Cold Fusion" are because I have yet to read it. Also don't take this too seriously, as Who contradicts Who all the time and Parkin can change whatever he wants.)
For example! This Doctor married a woman called Patience, having thirteen children and was even a part of the Supreme Council which was a ruling body on Gallifrey. He was subsequently charged with "consorting with aliens", something we see in Parkin's second story for this series.
However! Patience is also crucial in the plot to "The Infinity Doctors", the 40th anniversary also written by Lance Parkin. The book may or may not be in main continuity as the Infinity Doctor could be either the 1st or the 8th... or anything past and future. You want to know how that book would've originally started? It was supposed to begin with the Robert Banks Stewart Doctor with Patience. Counting Forgotten Lives continuity, this would imply that the Banks Stewart Doctor would be the one to first marry Patience.
Paul Hanley's "The Changing Face of Dr. Who" throws a fun spanner into the works. The Christopher Baker Doctor is stated to fall in love with Joan Redfern from "Human Nature" and it's TV adaptation. It feels as though the implication of the original book would make Cedric and Jilly the children that the Baker Doctor and Redfern may have had (this part is entirely theoretical). If this is the case, the Doctor would marry in his second incarnation, have human children following a third version of "Human Nature" then journey with them for a while, before eventually coming back to his wife. This also discounts that the Barry Doctor married a woman called Zodin at some point...
And maybe some things are best left Forgotten. Such as flavour text.
Patience, also, is placed into "The Machine" during "Cold Fusion" - a TARDIS created by Omega that predates the name of TARDIS, it was used to get her safely off of Gallifrey. The thing is, the Machine looks like TARDIS from the Cushing Movies.
Tumblr media
So maybe Cushing is pre-Hartnell too? And Dr. Who made TARDIS in the films, or claims to, so did he make The Machine? If Omega made it, then are Omega and Dr. Who the same? My brain feels like it's leaking.
For more insight into the creative process of every author that worked on Forgotten Lives, you can go to @forgottenlivesobverse and find interviews from everyone involved across the books. If you're looking for insight on how the outfits were designed, you can go to Paul Hanley's Patreon and find what went into designing each Doctor.
See a snapshot of how this Doctor bent the rules and tried to make amends. If this Doctor interests you, then I would even recommend trying to track down a copy of "Cold Fusion" to fill another gap.
PAST LIVES by Lance Parkin
LEVERAGE by Gareth Madgwick
RETROGENESIS (Part Five) by Philip Purser-Hallard
TRAIL OF A TIME LORD by Lance Parkin
Tumblr media
The next Doctor won't be any simpler as we cover the Graeme Harper Doctor, the journey Paul Hanley went on to simply find the original photo and grandiose sci-fi that comes with a new Doctor. That post should come later today, so don't wait too long!

Note
can i ask what ur favourite dvds are from your collection?
FINALLY someone who appreciates me!! gonna format this as a list bc i was rambling too much and this is neater (also note that some of these are my favourite bc i love the film, and some bc the physical dvd is just so cool):
two-disc edition of maurice (1987) released by the bfi (best film ever btw).
40th anniversary release of the sound of music that came with an 8-page booklet (also the best film ever).
jennifer's body and jawbreaker (both cult classics in the 'teen girls are evil' genre).
all three bill and ted movies (the first of which is a 4k restoration).
every spider-man movie (raimi, webb, watts, spider-verse) including spider-man 2.1 (the extended cut of spider-man 2).
coraline 2-disc collectors edition that came with two pairs of 3D glasses.
the lesser-known shrek 3D (unfortunately not shrek (2001) in 3D, this is a separate short called shrek 3D 😔) that also came with 3D glasses.
the 'far far away' edition of shrek 2, which has a button on the front that makes donkey's mouth light up and speak if you press it, and when you open the case there's a pop-up scene of the characters.
barbie boxset that's designed to look like a jewelry box complete with a mirror that has the first 19(!!) barbie movies (although not technically since it skips the barbie diaries in favour of princess charm school).
the monster-high '6 movie collection' (super lucky find from a charity shop, i barely ever see monster high movies in there).
the special editions of all three high school musical movies.
monster house (2006) which came with an exclusive comic (also found in a charity shop).
stranger things season 1 on dvd and blu-ray in a vhs-style case (this was exclusive to target back in 2017 and i got it for £20 on ebay still sealed!! season 2 is unfortunately much more expensive 😔).
i have yet to watch it, but i have the alien quadrilogy in a green-iridescent sleve which contains 9 discs and a booklet.
also have yet to watch, but my 2-disc edition of fight club in a cardboard sleeve designed to look like a paper package is pretty cool.
i'm very grateful to my parents for not getting rid of my childhood dvds, bc i now have a pretty substantial collection of disney classics, most of them 2-disc special editions (though they're not all in the best condition; my copy of cinderella cracked in the middle of the disc because i watched it so much, but hey, that's just a testament to how much i loved it).
oh, and i also own 65% of andrew garfield's filmography (out of those that can be owned physically that is). it sucks that i can't own tick tick boom since it's a netflix original, but never let me go is one of my favourite films of all time so i'm very happy to have that one!!

Yes indeed, here we are… at Frank Zappa’s most popular album! Apostrophe was originally intended as kindof an odds-and-ends album, a bunch of leftover recordings from his current lineup going back to the 1970 sessions for a Hot Rats sequel. But Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow became an unexpected hit (though a “novelty” hit, which rankled) and drove this album to sell briskly. Side 1 is dominated by a song suite about yellow snow, an eskimo named Nanook and his baby seal, a blinded fur trapper, and a pancake breakfast from which he must steal the margarine. There’s actually a Rosetta Stone to understanding this song cycle: the 40th anniversary compilation The Crux of the Biscuit features an early live rendition with a spoken introduction in which FZ spells out not just the storyline, but also the inside jokes that led to the whole absurd piece. It definitely increased my enjoyment. Then there’s Cosmik Debris and Stinkfoot, two songs that were already live staples for the new band making their studio debuts. But I think one of the most startlingly good songs here is Uncle Remus. There are plenty of examples on other Zappa records of FZ making racial jokes he had no business making—even if not definitely racist himself, he sure as heck didn’t provide a lot of evidence to the contrary. But this song is a thoughtful exploration of the dehumanizing experience of being Black in America. Again, maybe he wasn’t the right vessel for it, but it’s a really good song. And then there’s the title track, a jam session that Jack Bruce claimed doesn’t feature his bass playing, even though it’s extremely obvious that it does.
I actually hated this album for years. As I’ve mentioned, I got into FZ through Hot Rats when I was in high school, and quickly absorbed much of the original Mothers of Invention catalog. Then a friend gave me a burned copy of Apostrophe, which I already knew from reading online was his most popular album. And it completely alienated me. The silly non-story storytelling turned me off completely. Because this was THE ‘70s Zappa album as far as I knew, I decided that I only liked his ‘60s work and didn’t explore any further. I later found my way into later Zappa by means of the Helsinki Concert from You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore, but even as I loved Over-Nite Sensation and One Size Fits All and such, I skipped this one. Couldn’t get the bad taste out of my mouth. Finally, years later, I found a vinyl copy and decided to give it a fresh listen, and heard what everyone else loves about it. So I am no longer an Apostrophe hater. But I also never recommend it as a starting point, because I remember my own first experience of it!
I’ve actually got a quadraphonic pressing of this too… one of those things I couldn’t help but pick up when it showed up cheap. I keep it in storage. I can’t imagine a scenario where I’m actually able to listen to it…
