"Seven federal agencies are partnering to implement President Biden’s American Climate Corps, announcing this week they would work together to recruit 20,000 young Americans and fulfill the administration's vision for the new program.
The goals spelled out in the memorandum of understanding include comprehensively tackling climate change, creating partnerships throughout various levels of government and the private sector, building a diverse corps and serving all American communities.
The agencies—which included the departments of Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and Energy, as well the Environmental Protection Agency and AmeriCorps—also vowed to ensure a “range of compensation and benefits” that open the positions up to a wider array of individuals and to create pathways to “high-quality employment.”
Leaders from each of the seven agencies will form an executive committee for the Climate Corps, which Biden established in September, that will coordinate efforts with an accompanying working group. They will create the standards for ACC programs, set compensation guidelines and minimum terms of service, develop recruitment strategies, launch a centralized website and establish performance goals and objectives. The ACC groups will, beginning in January, hold listening sessions with potential applicants, labor unions, state and local governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
The working group will also review all federal statutes and hiring authorities to remove any barriers to onboarding for the corps and standardize the practices across all participating agencies. Benefits for corps members will include housing, transportation, health care, child care, educational credit, scholarships and student loan forgiveness, stipends and non-financial services.
As part of the goal of the ACC, agencies will develop the corps so they can transition to “high-quality, family-sustaining careers with mobility potential” in the federal or other sectors. AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith said the initiative would prepare young people for “good-paying union jobs.”
Within three weeks of rolling out the ACC, EPA said more than 40,000 people—mostly in the 18-35 age range—expressed interest in joining the corps. The administration set an ambitious goal for getting the program underway, aiming to establish the corps’ first cohort in the summer of 2024.
The corps members will work in roles related to ecosystem restoration and conservation, reforestation, waterway protection, recycling, energy conservation, clean energy deployment, disaster preparedness and recovery, fire resilience, resilient recreation infrastructure, research and outreach. The administration will look to ensure 40% of the climate-related investments flow to disadvantaged communities as part of its Justice40 initiative.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the MOU would allow the ACC to “work across the federal family” to push public projects focused on environmental justice and clean energy.
“The Climate Corps represents a significant step forward in engaging and nurturing young leaders who are passionate about climate action, furthering our journey towards a sustainable and equitable future,” Regan said.
The ACC’s executive committee will hold its first meeting within the next 30 days. It will draw support from a new climate hub within AmeriCorps, as well as any staffing the agency heads designate."

In the previous post I introduced Greenpeace. These are some wins from June posted on their website.
- Hyundai Construction Equipment commits to help stopping illegal mining in the Amazon
Greenpeace East Asia released the Stop the Excavators report in April of this year, calling to heavy machinery manufacturers to take measures that prevent their equipment being used illegally, in ways that cause violations of human rights.
This exposé revealed that Hyundai Construction Equipment is apparently the favoured brand used in illegal mining in Indigenous Lands in the Amazon.
Hyundai has now announced a series of measures to protect the forest, and will act to prevent this in the future.
- ReconAfrica suspends oil drilling in Okavango Delta
The Canadian oil company ReconAfrica has stopped drilling in Namibia’s Okavango Delta, after it was faced with lawsuits and environmental concerns. For now, the drillings have only been suspended, but this is a step in the right direction, proving that people power can work wonders.
In 2019, ReconAfrica announced fracking in some of Africa's most sensitive (both in terms of water supplies and as livelihoods for the communities in the area) environmental areas. Namibian youth climate activists, indigenous, environmental and human rights groups have been working since then to prevent this from happening.
- ASEAN steps up commitment to end forced labour and human trafficking practices of migrant fishers
In May 2023, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) leaders officially adopted the first ASEAN Declaration on Migrant Fishers Protection in history. This declaration follows many years of active campaigning by human rights advocates and civil society organizations. The campaign aims to push stronger policies to protect Southeast Asian migrants working in fisheries and their rights.
This declaration emphasised that protecting and fulfilling the rights of migrant fishers is an entire migration cycle (recruitment, placement, and repatriation), and so is a shared responsibility among the ASEAN states.
- Local fishers and civil society join forces to reforest mangroves in Senegal
The local community in the traditional fishing town Joal in Senegal started reforesting mangroves in a show of what direct action is really about.
Joal is located near mangrove forests, that are essential breeding grounds for many fish species, and are vital therefore for the fishing communities in those areas. They also store more carbon than tropical forests, and are capable of curbing climate impacts such as floods.
- Dutch creative agencies choose to no longer work with fossil fuel companies
23+ creative agencies in The Netherlands put together a Fossil No Deal, stating that they will stop working with fossil companies and no longer encourage fossil passenger transport. They call it verdrag verantwoord verleiden, a treaty for responsible seduction.
- Thailand applies new PM2.5 ambient standard
In the beginning of June, the new PM2.5 ambient standard was officially applied in Thailand.
The new standard is now 15 μg/m3 for the annual standard and 37.5 μg/m3 for 24-hour standard, which is in keeping with the revised WHO air quality guidelines. This is a big step in the right direction to help reduce PM2.5 and solve air pollution in the country.
Greenpeace Thailand is still not at rest, though, and are continuing to fight to get the PM2.5 at its source, that is from the industries.
- In New Zealand, FSC abandons plans for ‘GE learning’ process
Greenpeace Aotearoa and other environmental organizations have been pressuring the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme to abandon its plans for a ‘Genetic Engineering (GE) learning’ process.
The long-standing principle of not certifying GE trees came under threat  after pressure from FSC certified plantation  company Suzano from Brazil that has a subsidiary doing GE eucalyptus tree research trials (for glyphosate resistance).
- Citizens say yes to net zero emissions in Switzerland
Swiss citizens have voted in favour of a new law to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The new climate law, which was initiated seven years ago, passed a referendum with about 59% of the voters.
Net zero is now enshrined in the “federal law on climate protection, innovation and strengthening energy security“.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see, news from your own countries, or if you'd like to add anything or share.
I'm also here to listen, my DMs and Asks are always open :)
Love you all, and see you next time, be safe!

Alaric Greenwood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Name: Alaric Greenwood
Age: 25 (at the time of being transported to the modern world)
Height: 6'0
Sexuality: bisexual
Background
Alaric Greenwood was born in the bustling streets of New York City in the late 1940s. From a young age, he exhibited exceptional intelligence and a strong sense of justice. His parents, both scientists working for the government, recognized his potential early on and encouraged his academic pursuits.
In his late teens, Alaric caught the attention of SHIELD recruiters due to his impressive performance in cryptography and espionage-related tasks. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the agency's most promising young agents in the 1970s.
During a routine mission involving experimental time-travel technology, Alaric found himself unexpectedly transported through time, landing in present-day New York City. Disoriented and confused, he realized that he had been thrust decades into the future, far beyond his original era.
Despite his initial shock, Alaric quickly adapted to his new surroundings, utilizing his training and intellect to navigate the modern world. However, he soon discovered that the time displacement had altered the fabric of reality, leaving him stranded in a world vastly different from the one he knew.
Personality
Alaric Greenwood is the epitome of a true gentleman, embodying the values of chivalry and kindness that defined the 1970s era. With his charming demeanor and warm smile, he effortlessly puts others at ease, always ready with a helping hand or a comforting word.
As a product of his time, Alaric possesses a strong sense of honor and integrity, holding himself to high moral standards even in the face of adversity. He believes in doing what's right, even when it's not the easiest path to take, and he isn't afraid to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves.
Despite his gentlemanly demeanor, Alaric also has a playful side, enjoying good-natured banter and lighthearted humor with his friends and colleagues. He's quick with a joke or a witty retort, but always mindful of others' feelings and never at the expense of someone else's dignity.
In relationships, Alaric is a true romantic, with an old-fashioned belief in love and courtship. He treats others with respect and consideration, valuing communication and trust above all else. Whether it's with friends, family, or a romantic partner, Alaric's loyalty knows no bounds, and he will always go above and beyond to show his appreciation and affection.
The 70s family
During his time in the 70s as a young SHIELD agent, Alaric Greenwood had the opportunity to cross paths and become close with influential figures like Howard Stark, Peggy Carter, Elizabeth Stark, Hank Pym, Jarvis and Jason Underwood.
Peggy Carter
Peggy took Alaric under her wing, recognizing his potential and offering him guidance as he navigated the world of espionage. Their relationship was been built on mutual respect and trust, with Peggy serving as a mentor and mother figure to the young agent. Despite the generation gap, Peggy admired Alaric's determination and bravery, seeing in him the same qualities that made her a legendary agent.
Howard Stark
As a close friend and colleague of Peggy's, Howard also took an interest in Alaric's development as an agent. Howard might have even seen Alaric as a protege of sorts, appreciating his intelligence and enthusiasm for the work they did at SHIELD. Their relationship was marked by Howard's playful banter and Alaric's awe at the inventor's technological prowess. Howard even entrusted Alaric with the occasional babysitting duty for his young son, Tony, recognizing the young agent's sense of responsibility despite his youthful demeanor.
Elizabeth Stark
As Howard's sister and a fellow member of the SHIELD team, Elizabeth provided Alaric with another source of support and camaraderie. She acted as a confidante for him, offering advice and companionship as he adjusted to life as an agent. Elizabeth's presence added another layer of warmth and family to Alaric's relationships within the group.
Hank Pym
As a fellow scientist and colleague within SHIELD, Hank Pym shared a unique bond with Alaric, based on their shared love of technology and innovation. Hank mentored Alaric in the field of science, introducing him to new ideas and concepts that would aid him in his missions. Their relationship is characterized by mutual respect and intellectual curiosity, with Hank recognizing Alaric's potential to make significant contributions to their work at SHIELD.
Jarvis
As Howard Stark's loyal butler and confidante, Jarvis provided Alaric with a steady presence and a sense of stability within the hectic world of espionage. Jarvis might have taken on a paternal role towards Alaric, offering him guidance and wisdom as he navigated the challenges of being a young agent. Their relationship is marked by Jarvis's unwavering support and Alaric's deep respect for the elder man's wisdom and integrity.
Jason Underwood
As Peggy Carter's brother and a fellow member of the SHIELD team, Jason would have been like an older brother to Alaric, teasing him mercilessly but also looking out for him in the field. They shared a bond forged through shared experiences and a mutual desire to protect their loved ones. Jason offered Alaric advice and encouragement, helping him navigate the complexities of life as a SHIELD agent.
Modern world
In the modern world, SHIELD stumbled upon something weird—an anomaly messing with time. When they investigated, guess who they found? None other than Alaric Greenwood, looking lost and utterly confused.
SHIELD agents cautiously approached him, and Alaric was all questions. He couldn't wrap his head around how much time had passed. To him, it felt like he blinked and woke up in a totally different world, with crazy tall buildings and gadgets that belong in sci-fi movies.
After some back and forth, SHIELD brought him in for a chat, hoping he had some clues about the time craziness and his own time-traveling adventure. Despite feeling like a fish out of water, Alaric started to get the hang of things, especially with the help of his new buddies at SHIELD.
As he got used to the modern world, Alaric couldn't help but miss the simpler times. But he also saw the potential for making a difference here and now. With his old-school skills and a fresh perspective, he quickly became an asset to SHIELD, diving headfirst into unraveling the mysteries of the present while keeping his past close to his heart.
The Avengers
Tony Stark
As the son of Howard Stark, Tony had known Alaric from a young age, with Alaric occasionally babysitting him during his childhood. When Alaric suddenly finds himself transported to the modern world, he's understandably shocked to see the once-young Tony all grown up and now a renowned genius and superhero. Despite the time gap, Tony welcomes Alaric with open arms, grateful for the familiar face from his past.
Steve Rogers
Like Alaric, Steve Rogers also finds himself displaced in time, albeit from a different era. As fellow "old-timers" in a modern world, Alaric and Steve share a special camaraderie born from their shared experiences and struggles. Alaric respects Steve as a symbol of unwavering courage and integrity, admiring his steadfast commitment to doing what's right no matter the cost. In turn, Steve sees in Alaric a kindred spirit, someone who understands the challenges of adapting to a new era while holding onto the values of the past.
Natasha Romanoff
Natasha, with her sharp wit and formidable skills, initially views Alaric with a mixture of curiosity and caution. As they work together on missions, Natasha comes to appreciate Alaric's gentlemanly demeanor and unwavering dedication to the cause. She respects his integrity and values his perspective, especially when it comes to navigating the complexities of the modern world. Over time, they develop a strong bond built on mutual respect and trust, with Natasha often turning to Alaric as a confidante and ally.
Bruce Banner
Bruce Banner, the brilliant scientist plagued by his alter ego, the Hulk, finds a kindred spirit in Alaric Greenwood. Like Alaric, Bruce knows what it's like to feel out of place in the world, struggling to reconcile his past with his present reality. Despite their differences, Bruce admires Alaric's resilience and compassion, seeing in him a fellow seeker of truth and understanding. They bond over shared experiences and late-night conversations about science and philosophy, finding solace in each other's company amidst the chaos of their lives as Avengers.
Thor
Thor, with his larger-than-life presence and noble demeanor, initially sees Alaric as a curious anomaly from a distant past. However, as they fight side by side in battle and share tales of their respective homelands, Thor comes to appreciate Alaric's bravery and unwavering sense of honor. Their friendship blossoms as they exchange stories of valor and adventure, with Thor viewing Alaric as a worthy companion and ally in the ongoing struggle against evil.
Clint Barton
Clint Barton, the skilled marksman known as Hawkeye, forms a close bond with Alaric Greenwood based on their shared experiences as agents and their mutual respect for each other's abilities. Despite their different backgrounds, Clint and Alaric share a similar sense of humor and a penchant for mischief, often exchanging playful banter during downtime between missions. Clint sees in Alaric a kindred spirit, someone who understands the unique challenges of life as an Avenger and who always has his back in the heat of battle. Their friendship is forged in the fires of adversity, growing stronger with each passing adventure.
Fun facts:
Musical Talents: Despite his dedication to espionage, Alaric has a hidden talent for music. He's a skilled pianist and enjoys playing jazz tunes in his spare time, finding solace and joy in the melodies of his youth.
Gourmet Chef: Alaric is a surprisingly adept cook, specializing in classic 1970s cuisine with a modern twist. His signature dish is a hearty beef bourguignon, a recipe passed down from his mother, which he loves to prepare for his friends and teammates.
Vintage Fashion Enthusiast: With a keen eye for style, Alaric has a passion for vintage fashion from the 1970s. He's often seen sporting retro-inspired outfits, complete with wide-collar shirts, bell-bottom jeans, and suede jackets, adding a touch of old-school flair to his modern-day wardrobe.
Photographic Memory: Alaric possesses a photographic memory, allowing him to recall even the smallest details with remarkable accuracy. This skill comes in handy during missions, where his ability to remember faces, locations, and crucial information proves invaluable to the team.
Bookworm: Despite his adventurous lifestyle, Alaric is an avid reader and enjoys curling up with a good book whenever he gets the chance. His tastes are eclectic, ranging from classic spy novels to historical biographies, and he's always on the lookout for his next literary obsession.
Language Buff: Over the years, Alaric has picked up several languages during his travels and missions with SHIELD. He's fluent in French, Russian, and Mandarin, among others, making him a valuable asset in international operations and diplomatic negotiations.
Vintage Vinyl Collector: Alaric has a passion for music from the 1960s and 70s and is an avid collector of vintage vinyl records. His prized possession is a rare Beatles White Album, which he acquired during a mission in London.

The Federal Aviation Administration is actively recruiting workers who suffer “severe intellectual” disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency’s website.
“Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring,” the FAA’s website states. “They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism.”
The initiative is part of the FAA’s “Diversity and Inclusion” hiring plan, which claims “diversity is integral to achieving FAA’s mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond.”
The FAA’s website shows the agency’s guidelines on diversity hiring were last updated on March 23, 2022.
The FAA, which is overseen by Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation, is a government agency charged with regulating civil aviation and employs roughly 45,000 people.
All eyes have been on the FAA and airline industry in recent days, after a plug door on a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight on Jan. 5.
Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, chairman of Do No Harm – a group of health care professionals, medical students and policymakers working to “protect health care from a radical, divisive, and discriminatory ideology” – told Fox News Digital that similar to the medical field, the aviation industry has an obligation to protect its travelers.
“The aviation industry has a responsibility for traveler safety just as the health care industry has a responsibility for patient safety. These responsibilities outweigh other factors when considering applicants to work in those fields. People with disabilities who can successfully complete the task should never face discrimination,” said Goldfarb, a retired professor and the former associate dean for curriculum at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
“Unfortunately,” Goldfarb said, identity politics is “creating opportunities for so-called oppressed groups by lowering standards for entry into those fields and thereby endangering the safety of those which it’s designed to serve. Some endeavors simply do not lend themselves to identity politics,” he added.

Winter Was Not An Exciting Season
When I started writing this, about 3-4 episodes had dropped for most shows that started in winter 2024 season on Crunchyroll, and I came to the conclusion there was no reason to get excited... And I think that's pretty much how it worked out. I stopped watching most of these shows at some point. Eventually I dug into the archives on Crunchyroll instead... which was much more rewarding.
I by the way never bothered with "Solo Leveling" or "Shangri-La Frontier" because I don't get what's the point with these kind of shows. OP skill this, video game that, and usually no actual stakes at all. Why bother?
Delusional Monthly Magazine
Hot trash.
Weird scientist tries to place his research in a paper that's more of an "I saw an UFO manned by Elvis" style tabloid. Lots of unconvincing hijinks happen.
Stopping point: I switched off in episode 1 when somebody suddenly developed a superpower because this is all over the place. And stupid.
Tumblr media
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord
Girl gets reborn as the hidden boss of a game she used to play. She decides to avoid becoming a problem and also levels up to 99, which is a level reached by no one in this world (and the limit).
It does not help that she has dark magic as attribute and the heroine of that game is a light magic user.
Tumblr media
What's hard to bear is that she gets constantly ostracized way into episode 4. Everything she does is taken negatively and the potential love interests of the heroine (it's a dating sim) constantly stir trouble for her because everyone assumes the worst.
On the surface this is yet another show about being reborn into a dating sim, like "The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs" or "I'm in Love with the Villainess". Though I can't help but think that the setup is also a tongue-in-cheek about how being exceptional can get you bullied in Japan. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down" is idiomatic there for a reason.
In general a decent show, but what kind of person is the protagonist that she doesn't understand social cues at all? I don't think that's established very well.
Stopping point: I'm not sure why I stopped watching around episode 6, there seems to be no strong reason beyond losing interest. Might revisit.
Sasaki and Peeps
Middle-aged salary man gets himself a pet bird which turns out to be a reborn wizard from another world.
What follows is a wild (and also illogical) mix of genres. He gets transported to an Isekai world and learns magic, but mainly he wants to open a business there by transporting Japanese goods there and selling them. (Yet he never figures out that he could transport gold back to pay for them - or just be rich.)
Tumblr media
His magic then gets him recruited into a squad of psychics fighting other psychics. He's totally OP because psychics have only one ability and his magic works differently for every spell. Anyway, the show doesn't benefit from cutting across plots. It first tries to hit the "living the quiet life in another world" vibe, then goes into "everyday man thrust into the world of superpowers", and now seems to also tap into "adventuring in another world..."
Sasaki is likable enough, an innocent man, mostly, really drab and unassuming. What disturbs me is that so far all the females appearing are minors. There's a high school girl waiting for him every day next door - why? I don't want to know. His wild colleague at the agency who is a snappy dresser? Supposedly 17. (Yes, high school age.) The person he's supposed to protect next - a child beauty. (She seems important as she was given a completely "doll style" credits variation of her own.) I seriously don't want to know where this is going...
None of the GIFs here on tumblr feature the protagonist. Funny.
Stopping point: After Episode 3. After the third under-age girl appearing I was wondering how many other genres they are going to cram into this one.
Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!
Tokyo boy moves to rural Hokkaido and meets his future girlfriend, a total gyaru (gal).
Actually, he meets several, but I can't imagine this show playing out any other way. Has surprisingly little to say about Hokkaido itself except that it snows a lot and you need to keep warm.
Tumblr media
The show has a mellow, slice of life flair but lacks originality. I actually ended watching the full season, it's an easy show to watch. The three heroines are all pleasant people that overlap with part of his life, making the harem-ish setup of all three crushing on him a bit annoying since two of them never stood a chance.
Stopping point: I actually finished this one but I must say the drama built for the last episode was a complete no-show and completely unconvincing, even by the typical "Japanese is a language of unsaid things" standard.
The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
Frankly, initially this was the absolute highlight of the season. I waited for every episode.
Two talented teenagers are summoned to be the heroes saving another world. And a third, average guy, who happened to be nearby. He ends up stealing their thunder because he has the rare healing magic talent.
Tumblr media
Surprisingly, the other two people are really decent (looking at you, "Shield Hero") and in general he's treated well. The only dramatic concern is that healing magic has found its master in his teacher, an over-the-top drill sergeant style woman.
It quickly becomes apparent that healing magic, if used wrongly, is the strongest of them all - giving you infinite stamina, instantly restoring your strength, making you the perfect tank. You just have to train like a maniac. Which our drill sergeant ensures will happen.
Stopping point: After episode 7. The show is funny and has heart up to a certain point, but somehow I lost interest, also because it's destroying its previous vibe by hinting at impending doom. Interestingly I read a review today that points to mid season being a complete drag and messing up the pacing, and the finale not saving it. I guess I'm not surprised?
7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!
A woman gets reborn into another world as a noble, only for her defining moment to repeat over and over. She turned down by her prince fiancé and basically ejected from her social status.
But this filly has spirit, and so she cuts out a life of her own successfully. Only to die in a war years later and to find herself at the same scene! Since she retains her memory she starts to pick different routes, leading various lives, picking up skills and knowledge, only to die eventually in the same continent-spanning war.
Tumblr media
Her last time around, something odd happens. Just as she's escaping her betrothal she runs into the instigator of that war, the dark prince of the empire. And he is so taken with her, he proposes to her.
An unusual setup for sure. At some point we will likely learn what is behind the whole war business, but just watching her navigate all situations in stride is actually interesting by itself. As the title suggests, big drama is mostly absent so far ever since her "final life" started.
Stopping point: Middle of Episode 6. The mini-villain little brother turns out to be the complete opposite of a schemer and actually only wants the attention of his oniiii-chaaaan!! The whole flip was so unconvincing, I couldn't anymore. It's absolutely unclear why the guy she married does anything, including telling her to avoid his brother.
Tales of Wedding Rings
It would be hard to take this show serious at any level as it mostly exists as a vehicle to get this guy together with big-buxomed vixens for plot reasons - but there isn't much plot either.
He follows his childhood love to another world and accidentally marries her, getting the first ring of power. Then he learns he must fight off some evil led by the Abyss King. For that he has to marry more princesses.
Tumblr media
There's no logic to the action, though. In the first kingdom he can fend off abyss monsters but gets his ass handed to him by an abyss knight. So they run off, abandoning their own kingdom?!? Then, as soon as he gets the ring from the elven princess he easily hands the abyss knight their ass without even trying. Instant wipe. So that knight keeps showing up and somehow evil rings appear and there's no rhyme or reason to the drama.
Otherwise it's pretty clear that he wants things to work out with his childhood love, but the other girls want attention, too. So another unrequited harem, badly done, too. And yes, the kingdoms they encounter are sexy elves, sexier cat people, and lolicon demon people. Expect plenty of fan service.
Stopping point: Episode 9. No special reason. The show is easy to watch, undemanding, but also doesn't deliver much. You can pick it up at any point and leave it and you won't miss much. Ironically I got mostly GIFs for "Rings of Power" when searching, and frankly, even this anime is better than that.
A Sign Of Affection
I almost forgot this one.
The heroine of the story is for all practical purposes deaf but she soon gets to know an absolute boy-hunk and wonders what these feelings are. Which she then proceeds to find out since he also likes her.
Tumblr media
As for a story that focuses on a character with a disability, it does very little with it except her having a lot of trouble reading situations around her and the impediments of communication. And people constantly getting in her space. (Which is a necessity but unusual in Japan.)
It's certainly a high profile production for a romance, with great art.
Stopping point: After Episode 2.
In spite of being a fan of romance stories, it somehow rubbed me wrong that not only does an absolute model boy (the art is good enough that nobody needs to tell us) become immediately interested in her, he also is portrayed as this interesting character who travels abroad in a moment's notice for his studies. Mr Perfect on day 1. There didn't seem to be anything interesting to be going on at all. So I lost interest.
When looking around on the internet, in most places this show is described with one short paragraph for a synopsis. A critic compared it to "A Silent Voice", but that show needs almost a full page to have its synopsis laid out on Wikipedia - because it's a complex take on multiple topics - disability, bullying, social dynamics, and the ability to change. Somehow that strikes me as a contrived comparison.

OPERATION CORPORATE :Air-to-air refueling in the Falklands/Malvinas War
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 06/12/2022 - 20:45 in History, Military, War Zones
Replenishment from Victor to Victor. Twenty-two of these meetings were required for each Black Buck mission from the Island of Ascension to the Falklands and return.
On April 2, 1982, Argentine forces invaded the capital of the Falkland Islands, Stanley, and quickly defeated a small British garrison. They then took control of the island of South Georgia. By the end of the month, 10,000 Argentine soldiers were stationed in the Falklands/Malvinas. They were mainly poorly trained and equipped recruits. England urgently needed to move its forces to the islands.
The next day, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher told the House of Commons - in a very rare Saturday session - that "it is the Government's goal that the islands are freed from occupation and returned to the British administration as soon as possible".
Tumblr media
The functions assigned to the RAF for Operation Corporate were reconnaissance, ground attack, transport of personnel and cargo, as well as the aeromedical evacuation of the injured during the conflict. The RAF also showed the psychological exercise of the demonstration of will and ability.
But although these tasks were clear, the resources to deliver them were much smaller. The distances were vast. Even from the advanced base at Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island, there was no aircraft that could fly to the Falklands and return without support; tankers were vital and, of course, any aircraft that went so far had to be able to receive fuel from a tanker.
Tumblr media
The view through the rear periscope of a Victor tanker while refueling a Vulcan bomber over the South Atlantic.
This limited the choice to Avro Vulcan. However, an increasingly smaller number of these Vulcans remained: only those who escaped retirement in museums or the torch. Some Vulcans were already on display in museums.
The unknown hero: the handley Page Victor refueler
As for the tankers, there were a few dozen Handley Page Victor K2, with the main task of supporting the English Electric Lightnings Rapid Reaction Force, defending Britain's Air Defense Identification Zone, mainly against Soviet aircraft that skirted the North Cape in the North Atlantic. The VC10 refuelers were not yet in service.
Quite simply, without the Victor tankers, Operation Corporate could not have been launched.
Tumblr media
Victor as a V-bomber
Victor began his career in the 1950s as a strategic bomber, entering the service of the Bomber Command in April 1958. Together with his mission companions, the Vickers Valiant and the Avro Vulcan, his main objective was to transport the British atomic bomb 'Blue Danube' (weighing 10,000 lb / 4.5 tons) to Moscow. The previous generation of RAF bombers - Handley Page Halifax, Avro Lancaster/Lincoln and Boeing B-29 Washington, which the three V-Bombers were replacing, flew lower, were slower and equipped with weapons for self-defense, while the 1946 Operational Requirement against which both Victor and Vulcan were designed followed the same principle They should fly higher and faster to overcome the opposition: 500 mph (800 km/h) at 50,000 feet (15,000 meters). No Soviet fighter or anti-aircraft weapon could threaten them. Later, the Victors reached 620 mph (1,000 km/h) at 62,000 feet (19,000 meters).
Tumblr media
But this invincibility would not last long. On May 1, 1960, a Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance aircraft piloted by Frances Gary Powers, borrowed from the United States Air Force to the Central Intelligence Agency, was shot down while flying over Sverdlovsk Oblast in the Ural Mountains of the USSR. Soviet air defense technology had reached altitude quickly. The Soviet missile S-75 Dvina (NATO SA-2 report name 'Guideline') could probably reach 70,000 feet. Right above the ceiling of the Victors and Vulcans. The V-Bombers were no longer safe at altitude.
Tumblr media
The RAF V-Bombers: Valiant, Victor and Vulcan.
In early 1963, the Air Council recognized that improved Soviet air defenses meant that the V-Bombers could no longer expect to survive at a high level, so it introduced the need for low-level attacks: instead of flying at 50,000 feet, they would fly very low - 100 feet - in heavily defended areas of the Soviet Union.
Tumblr media
But the Victors were not able to fly at low altitude, where their most delicate wings could not withstand the tensions of the greatest turbulence.
What to do with all of them? Convert them into tankers.
The need for tanker planes
The early 1960s saw the introduction of English Electric Lightning into the Fighter Command (before becoming the Attack Command). Incredibly fast with twice the speed of sound, I was also desperately thirsty. The refuelers were vital to allow the Rapid Reaction Alert Lightnings to scare away the Soviet Tupolev Tu-95 'Bear'.
In 1965, with the sudden withdrawal from service of all Valiants due to wing fatigue caused by low-level air turbulence, the first Victors were converted into tank planes. Some Victors had two hoses and could still carry bombs, while others, later all, were three-point. The latter had one on each wing and a larger Hose Drum Unit (HDU) in the bomb compartment, thus losing its bombing capacity. Wing hoses were only suitable for lighter, hunting-style aircraft, while bombers and heavier transport aircraft had to use the axis hose for aerodynamic reasons.
The first Victors were launched for tank conversion, as the most powerful B2 variants began to be delivered in 1962, but in due course 24 of these B2s were converted into K2 tankers.
Tumblr media
Although by Operation Corporate all Victors were converted into tank planes, a retro modified Victor carried out one of the first offensive operations flying a radar and visual reconnaissance mission to South Georgia.
During the combat phase of Operation Corporate, all aircraft going from Ascension to the south to the Falklands and fighters coming from the United Kingdom to Ascension required several tankers.
At the receiving end
The following individual types participated in Operation Corporate and benefited from air-to-air refueling to fulfill their missions:
Tumblr media
Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR2
Nimrod carried out reconnaissance missions and provided navigation and search and rescue coverage to Harriers on their flights over the water from Ascension Island to the Task Force and also for Black Buck missions with the Vulcans. It also provided communications with nuclear attack submarines going "to the south".
These Nimrods had to have refueling systems installed for the first time for Operation Corporate, then on April 13, 1982 (only 11 days after the invasion), the Ministry of Defense made a request to Flight Refueling Ltd to install refueling equipment. The first test flight took place on April 30. The Nimrods were not designed for this, nor were there spare parts in stocks. Just like the Vulcans, museums and scrap depots were searched for pieces. Perhaps unbelievably, the Vulcan recently presented to Castle Air Base, California, was invaded by RAF engineering noncommissioned officers in civilian clothing to get the plumbing parts. After the conflict, Castle Air Base congratulated the RAF for this spectacular audacity. And he demanded that the pieces be returned.
With in-flight refueling, a Nimrod remained on patrol for 19 hours.
Tragically, however, the addition of in-flight refueling plumbing was a factor in the loss of the Nimrod "XV 230" over Afghanistan 24 years later: a fuel leak from the refueling causing a catastrophic fire and the death of all 14 military personnel on board.
Hawker Harrier GR3
The RAF frontline attack capabilities with combat capability in 1982 were limited to the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom, Blackburn Buccaneer and Hawker Siddeley Harrier GR 3 jets. All three had air-to-air refueling capacity. But it would not be reasonable to expect a pilot to fly 8,000 miles in 16 hours - even if he had the ability to navigate, which he did not have. Even the aircraft didn't have enough oil for its engines at these distances. The only one of these three that was used was the Harrier GR3.
Tumblr media
The RAF Harriers were initially assigned to Operation Corporate as friction substitutes for any Sea Harriers lost in combat. However, the losses were fortunately lower than expected. However, the integration of these aircraft with an aircraft carrier was far from simple, as about 30 modifications were required. Its inertial navigation systems are designed to be calibrated in a known fixed location, but of course an aircraft carrier never stands still. In fact, this mating with the aircraft carrier was never achieved, so GR3 pilots relied on a ruler, pencil and a 'Mk 1 eyeball' to aim at the bomb.
The engines didn't have the corrosion-resistant special coatings that the Sea Harriers had to combat the damage caused ?? by the air loaded with salt. Magnesium components (aluminum in Sea Harriers) reacted chemically to salt water. Naval transponders had to be installed, holes were drilled to allow water drainage, additional mooring points to handle the rolling and throwing of aircraft carriers in rough seas and the nose steering mechanism modified. However, despite all these modifications, a GR3 could never have been a direct replacement for a Sea Harrier as a fighter. Although the AIM-9L Sidewinders air-to-air missiles were installed, the Harrier had no radar.
Some flew from England to the Task Force, stopping at Yandun International Airport, Banjul (Gambia) and Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island. They used large-sized fuel tanks and REVO probes, but records suggest that they did not fit the tips of the extension wings designed only for these transfer flights; a batch flew nonstop from St Mawgan to Ascension and, a few days later, straight to the Task Force, making their first landing on the deck of aircraft carriers in the middle of an air alert.
Lockheed Hercules
The workhorse of the transport fleet. In addition to lifting UK personnel and cargo for Ascension, they supported the Task Force flying south and uncharged skydiving equipment before leaving the UK and key personnel, including, it is said, special forces.
Marshalls of Cambridge Ltd installed refueling probes on 16 Hercules aircraft, allowing them to fly from Ascension to Stanley and return; flight lieutenant T Locke broke the record for resistance flying for 28 hours and 4 minutes to launch electrical components and missiles into a Rapier missile battery positioned around Port Stanley.
Avro Vulcan B2
At the end of their operational lives, the Vulcan were called upon to carry out what was then the longest bombings in the world - the almost 6,400 km of Wideawake Airfield, Ascension Island, Port Stanley, Falkland/Malvinas Islands, a 16-hour round trip - in the famous "Black Buck" attacks; it took 13 Victor tankers to place a Vulcan on the target, with 15 air-to-air refuelings (AAR) between the only Vulcan and between Victors (some of the latter flying two missions that night).
The Vulcans did not need the support of tankers for their European nuclear role, so most of the plumbing was removed and had to be replaced by spare parts and pieces found in museums and junkyards. And the current pilots had not been trained in air refueling, so a sixth crew member was added - an aircraft captain Victor qualified as an air-to-air refueling instructor.
The Vulcans in particular on the Black Buck missions were from a batch of Mark B2s that had several modifications in order to transport the Skybolt missile (intended to replace Blue Steel, but discarded). They had more powerful Olympus 301 engines, compared to the Olympus 201 of the other B2s. And since Skybolt had celestial navigation - it also had to see the stars - they had to be mounted on pillars under the wings, as well as the reinforcement and wiring left over from this intended function, now allowing ECM (electronic countermeasures) and Shrike anti-radiation missiles (radar).
Although the damage to Stanley Airport in the first of Operation Black Buck's attacks was modest (a 1,000-pound bomb on the runway), the psychological impact was profound. If a Vulcan could reach Stanley, it could also reach the continent. Thus, the powerful Mirage fighter jets that escorted the attacks on the Task Force were stopped to protect the country of origin.
Hawker Sea Harrier FRS 1
Colloquially called 'Shars', the Sea Harriers were assets of the Royal Naval Air Service, and benefited from the support of RAF (Victor) tankers and Nimrod air rescue aircraft on transfer flights.
The aircraft on board the ships HM 'Invincible' and 'Hermes' did not need support from tankers, but Squadron No. 809 flew from RNAS Culdrose to Ascension, with the assistance of tankers; a night stop was made at Yandun International Airport, Banjul, Gambia, then to Ascension. Large transfer fuel tanks with a capacity of 330 gallons (1,500 liters) were available for each internal pestle, but tests on the ski jump of the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton showed that they negatively affected the finish and stability, so that the standard 100-gallon (450 liters) combat tanks were used. Again, there is no evidence that the larger "translate wing tips", which added support, were installed.
But the flight was not without problems: a SHAR losing its oxygen system, having to fly at a much lower altitude, with higher fuel consumption; another SHAR and his handlebar Victor losing navigation systems so that all the formation depended on a man in their SHAR for routing; and a Victor being unable to deploy the hoses mounted on the wings, so the SHARs had But as a SHAR pilot said 'what the hell, this is war'.
Consequences
Argentine forces surrendered on June 14, 1982. However, the problem of the continuous protection of the Falklands/Malvinas Islands and their population from a renewed Argentine invasion, if the United Kingdom armed forces withdrew, has now come to light and, therefore, a significant military capacity had to remain in place, far beyond the nominal strength of the Royal Marines who had been the permanent garrison before the invasion. A very significant logistical and defense challenge.
From the RAF's point of view, this initially meant establishing a large air bridge.
Were the Victors being used ?? at a very unforeseen rate, consuming their lives of fatigue. Then, two somewhat drastic measures were necessary until the first VC10 tankers entered service: convert Vulcans and Hercules into tankers.
Part of the British aircraft that played an important role in England's victory in the war.
With the Vulcans, two additional fuel tanks were installed in the cavernous pump compartment and the HDU was inserted where the ECM equipment was in compartments in the tail, behind the rudder. The only basket was housed in a metal and wooden box below the back of the tail. An order was placed with British Aerospace in Woodford on May 4 and only 50 days later, June 23, the XH 561 was delivered to Waddington RAF Base; it carried out tests on the same day delivering fuel to another Vulcan and a Victor.
Hercules Refillers
As for Hercules, one solution - of the Heath-Robinson type - was the contract given to the Marshalls of Cambridge to convert 4 Hercules to play the role of tank planes, one of which would be based on Stanley and Ascension.
It is true that the U.S. Marine Corps has been using the KC-130 tankers since the early 1960s, but these were designed for the task, with additional poles for the external hoses of the external engines and the appropriate wiring and plumbing. But the RAF Hercules did not have this, so the solution adopted by the Marshalls was much faster and more brutal: adding tanks to the cargo area; putting an HDU in the cargo door; and drilling a hole in the door for the hose.
‘Toboggan’
Air-to-air refueling is a delicate and dangerous operation, where errors lead to fatalities. Two large aircraft need to fly at exactly the same speed and maintain the same positions relative to only tens of meters away - even at night and in severe turbulence.
The first propeller tanker refueled combat planes that were faster than them. Jet tankers - such as Victor - solved this problem, but Operation Corporate receivers and Hercules produced the same problem on the contrary: Victor tankers were too fast for Hercules receivers.
The solution was a technique known as a toboggan: the two aircraft climbed separately to altitude and then dived, gaining speed. This would allow Hercules to pick up and connect with Victor's basket. At a lower altitude, they separated, went up and repeated - several times, if necessary.
Continued service
The Victors continued to serve until Operation Granby, the First Gulf War in 1991, and was withdrawn to RAF service in October 1993.
But the last flight (to date) of a Victor was on August 25, 2009, during a high-speed taxi run by a museum piece that got out of control when Victor took command and tried to fly...

Nine others died in the August 23 plane crash that reportedly killed Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary leader who staged a brief mutiny against Russia’s Defense Ministry in late June. Prigozhin’s death isn’t verified yet, but Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency has confirmed that he was on the passenger list. The other high-profile passenger aboard the doomed flight was Dmitry Utkin, the Wagner Group commander whose callsign is the basis for the company’s very name. Journalists at BBC Russian and the Dossier Center collected information about the other passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. Meduza summarizes these reports.
Passengers
Valery Chekalov
Chekalov managed multiple companies in St. Petersburg that were linked to Prigozhin. BBC Russia learned that his acquaintances logged his number in their phones as “Valery Evgenievich Syria,” “Valery Chekalov Concord Army,” and “Valery Evgenievich Chekalov from Prigozhin.” From 2011 to 2018, he headed the company “Kollektiv-Servis,” which won a contract with the Defense Ministry’s Commissary in 2012 to supply food to the army. Around the same time, the company registered an entity with a mess hall in Sevastopol, the home of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.
Chekalov also managed a company created in 2014 called “Neva,” which operated the subsidiary “Evro Polis” — the same Evro Polis that signed a memorandum with the Syrian government in 2016 to recapture and guard oil facilities in exchange for the value of 25 percent of the oil and gas produced there, according to reporting by the news outlet Fontanka.
Evgeny Makaryan
Born in Magnitogorsk, Makaryan was a former police officer. According to the Dossier Center, he joined Wagner Group in March 2016, serving in its fourth assault detachment in Syria, where he was wounded. BBC Russian calls him one of Prigozhin’s bodyguards.
Sergey Propustin
Propustin is listed at Myrotvorets, the Ukrainian website that names and sometimes doxxes people its authors consider to be “enemies of Ukraine.” Myrotvorets identifies him as a grenadier reconnaissance officer and Wagner Group fighter. According to the Dossier Center, Propustin fought in the Second Chechen War. He reportedly joined Wagner in March 2015 and fought in its second reconnaissance assault detachment, from which Prigozhin would later recruit several of his personal bodyguards. Accordingly, BBC Russian reports that Propustin was another Prigozhin bodyguard.
Alexander Totmin
Myrotvorets lists Totmin too. It’s unknown when he started working for Prigozhin, but journalists learned that he was living in St. Petersburg as recently as 2022. His phone number shows up in shared databases identified as “Sanya Work PMC,” “Totmin Sanya Kontora Piter,” and “Alexander W.” In August 2012, a court in the Altai Krai sentenced him to 300 hours of community service for stealing a chainsaw from a bathhouse located on someone else’s property. In September 2014, he was sentenced to two years of probation for car theft.
Nikolai Matuseev
Researchers at the Dossier Center believe that the Nikolai Matuseev listed among the plane-crash passengers is the same one who joined Wagner Group in January 2017. He was a gunner in the organization’s fourth assault detachment in Syria.
Crew
Rustam Karimov
The aircraft’s 29-year-old second pilot, Karimov lived with his wife in Perm. He graduated from the Sasovo Flight School in Russia’s Ryazan region in 2014. Karimov’s father told reporters that his son was unemployed at the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He says Rustam found work three months ago with MNT-Aero, the company that owns the crashed plane, and then moved to St. Petersburg.
Alexey Levshin
Levshin was the plane’s captain. His daughter Anastasia told the news outlet RBC that her father had worked with Prigozhin for many years, though she provided no further details. BBC Russian discovered that Levshin was featured in a 2018 broadcast by the television network Vesti Novosibirsk about an airshow that included military pilots. In the story, he was identified as the navigator of a Sukhoi Su-34 crew.
Kristina Raspopova
Raspopova was the plane’s flight attendant. Thirty-nine years old, she was born in what is now Kazakhstan. According to the news outlet 74.ru, her younger brother is the deputy prosecutor in Yemanzhelinsk, a city in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region. She attended the Moscow Finance and Law University and lived for some time in Yekaterinburg before moving to Moscow. The Telegram channel Baza reports that she relocated to St. Petersburg after finding a job at MNT-Aero.
Posts on social media indicate that Raspopova often traveled abroad, sharing photos from Jamaica, Singapore, Austria, and other countries. Multiple times, she flew aboard a business jet similar to the plane that crashed: an Embraer Legacy with the tail number RA-02857 based at Vnukovo International Airport, which she frequented. According to Baza, Raspopova spoke to her family a few hours before her final flight departed and said that the plane had been delayed for some reason.
