Khadine Cadogan, raised in Curepe, was born on February 20th, 1983. She attended the Curepe Fatima R.C. School, Curepe Junior Secondary and later St. Augustine Senior Comprehensive. At the early age of 9 years old, Khadine began taking an interest in playing the steelpan. 

Although her family were not particularly interested in the instrument, Khadine’s love for it could not be ignored. She jokes that ironically, there were multiple evenings her mother would secretly take her to pan practice.  

Khadine Cadogan is the only female groover in Trinidad, and with 19 years of experience, she is recognized within the pan fraternity as the best at what she does. Khadine speaks about how grateful she is for picking up the trade and encourages anyone male or female to get involved in the making of our national instrument. 

She quotes “I would encourage everyone to learn this fabulous piece of craft and I would like to see more ladies get involved in making pan.”

OCTAfan's Obscure Obscure and Weird Musical Instruments Tournament Round 1 Part 5: Carillon VS steelpan

Essentially a tower of bells, the Carillon is probably the largest instrument in the lineup, being tied with the pipe organ. It is a percussion instrument that involves a keyboard... and at least 23 large bells that are casted in bronze. They are usually found in churches, but there's a mobile version, although that's still pretty large compared to most of the instruments in the tournament.

Hailing from the Caribbean, the steelpan is the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago, and is referred to as 'the only instrument invented in the 21st century.' It's basically a steel drum container that that is tuned and hit with mallets.

Storytime: Large Is Not Equal To One Gram

I keep thinking about this embarrassing thing that happened a few weeks ago, so I figured I’d share the experience with the Tumblr community. 

So this guy I like is in the same steelpan band as me, and we were at practice. I’d brought my Chemistry book with me because I am mentally unable to Chemistry. 

I’d arrived early, and it was just me, him, and the band captain. Being the very awkward person I am, I completely avoided him and asked the band captain, “Hey, do you remember anything about Chemistry?” She just graduated last academic year and I wasn’t sure if she’d done Chem as a subject. 

Anyway, she was like, “Uh, no, not really.” 

And he was like, “Wait, this is Form 3 (he’s a year older than me and one class higher) Chemistry? Should be easy enough. Come here, let me help.” 

And I was like, oH. 

Okay. 

That didn’t kill my heart at all.

So, he takes my book and I show him the topic and then I realize. Now, a little exposition, if I’m using the term correctly. 

Your girl uses a shorthand system that she created to make taking notes in class faster because when you’re in online school and your teacher changes the slides too fast- it’s disgusting. And I was explaining to him what each symbol/abbreviation in my system meant and the last one was the word “large”.

Spoiler: It was not the word “large”.

It was one gram.

As in 1g.

And he laughed so hard when he realized no wait that’s not large isn’t it one gram?

And I pretty much died because oh no that is one gram oops sorry my bad my handwriting sucks.

Maybe I’m overreacting. Maybe it wasn’t that bad.

It felt that bad, though. And I feel like he remembers that when he needs to have a good laugh. I hate my handwriting.

At least I understand Specific Heat Capacity now.

Kind of.

Teaching the Steel Pan

This is the way the pan sounds when my Uncle plays it faster And faster. I Have heard it every day since birth, It echoes in my heart beat. It sounds like rain falling pitter Pattering on a galvanized roof like the one on my father’s house that my mom moved Into when she was sixteen and Looking for someplace where she could be her own. I am one part stubbornness and one Part routine. My father came home every day at the same time and my mother could feel the vibration Of his steps from meters away This is the music of my father murmuring Hopes into my mother’s flesh and the kicking And this is the crashing of the waves and the flurry of my uncle’s hands and the way it makes my mother young again And the way my uncle’s head bobs like a metronome And the sound of people laughing and gossiping and crying all at the same time. And it is my grandmother’s plane engine and my mother hearing her first train and wondering how Americans weren't deaf because it was so loud. These are the cuts on my uncle’s Hands from handling sharp oil barrels These are La Brea and the way Language is a learned rhythm from Several teachers. It is a song that We have made up the words to And this is the way my uncle knows The perfect note in his core This is the drum named guitar and The way my family’s vibrations Come together like a steel band All playing our own variations On the same notes.

1!   over the course of my i have learned ( & i mean actually learned aka took lessons, was self taught, or participated in a band ) how to play about 10 instruments. currently i play guitar, ukulele, some bass guitar & some piano. the other instruments were trombone, baritone, flute, both tenor & soprano steelpan, & basic trumpet. i learned a few things on the banjo & the bassoon but i didn’t dedicate any real time to those so i wouldn’t say i really know how to play it. i also played recorder in school but everyone does that so i don’t really count that either.  2!  i’m jewish but was raised learning both judaism & christianity since my mum is christian & my dad is jewish. i grew up going to both church, synagogue as well as both hebrew school & sunday school so i guess you could say i’m.... cultured. 3!   i’m a stupidly big nerd for languages. currently fluent in english & french with some basic knowledge of korean & hebrew. in an ideal world i’d be fluent in all four, as well as ASL & greek. fun additional fact is that i’m actually greek with the passport & everything which is why i’d love to learn the language.

female or male!   male for sure. just a comfort thing because i understand boys better than girls lmao big surprise there. least favorite face(s)!    oof. i’m really particular about harry potter fcs so there are a few i either just tolerate or simply can’t stand. other than that i’m pretty easy breezy covergirl about these things. oh & as a general rule i don’t like jason mamoa but it’s not like it’s a deal breaker. multi or single!   i started out with a single but in the end i think multi is just easiest for me to manage, both in regards to muse & my sanity. i do, however, also have a single muse blog for salem the cat over at @salemsaberhxgen fluff / angst / smut!   angst used to be all i could write but now i think i mostly just write meaningful fluff? like yeah it can be fluffy but it’s still furthering a plot or deepening a relationship or further developing my muses. that being said i’m getting back into the swing of angst so there will definitely be more of that popping up. smut is kinda spotty. if it comes up naturally, sure, but i’m not really going out looking for it. plot / memes!  i love memes but plotting is my bread & butter. plotting can really take things to the next level & completely change a relationship or story from a single ooc conversation. it’s really cool. that being said memes are fantastic, both for helping develop little surface level details that you can apply later, or simply a great way to get the ball rolling for new interactions or if you’re just feeling stuck with what you’ve got going on.
