i really do hate how "inclusive language" has just looped back around to gender essentialism in so many cases. i had my women in art professor say the words "there are things that men-identifying individuals will never understand in the way women do." and it's clear she wanted to say cis (het, white, upper class, neurotypical, able bodied, etc) men (which is another conversation entirely), but in her attempts to be inclusive she's fully missed the point. there are plenty of male-identifying individuals that understand, be it trans men or multigender people or nonbinary individuals or what have you. using gender inclusive terms does nothing when all you do is further alienate and erase people's experiences/identities

there used to not be many ghosts, if any, in gotham. the city might be the armpit of new jersey but at least it's not haunted, right? right??? (ha, bruce WISHES.)

thoughts below:

over the past few months, gotham has experienced an increase in petty crimes that's morphed into what almost seem like... hallucinations and weird crimes. a few known criminal groups are whispering about a new drug. is it the reason behind this weirdness? the drug causes a sudden burst in energy and euphoria followed by an awful comedown period. sometimes it can cause some awfully odd behavior.... also, why is it glowing??

what's actually going on: bane is importing ectoplasm into gotham. he's displaying new powers: glowing eyes, more agility, more strength, weird aura about him. the ectoplasm was stolen from a GIW facility because i refuse to believe those guys have any human-related security measures, only ghost-related ones. black mask's group stole some ectoplasm from bane, figured out the source, figured out how to turn it into a drug, and started slowly marketing it in gotham. more ectoplasm in gotham means ghosts are more attracted to the city. at first, the ectoplasm was limited to just bane+black mask's people so there were only a few ghosts. ectoplasm spreading throughout gotham = way more ghosts in gotham. also, sometimes ghosts might try to possess people who have enough ambient ectoplasm leftover in their blood from the drug because there's not a ton of ambient environmental ectoplasm to feed off of. surprise!

danny's role in this: danny left amity because the GIW nearly captured him and his parents figured out his identity. it did not go well. he went to gotham because no ghosts = no GIW interest and it'll be a good place to lay low. however, danny quickly notices more ghost activity than he'd expect for a place that's supposed to have basically no ghosts. uh oh. danny starts tracking down the ectoplasm and gathering it so it can't be sold throughout the city. oh, and transforming into his ghost form isn't super advisable because that much raw ectoplasm in a city with almost no natural ectoplasm means danny turns into a ghost MAGNET for a while. sorry, danny. this means sneaking has to be done in his human form. :) this means he's 1) going to attract some bat attention because it looks like he's somehow involved in this strange new mystery drug and 2) he's going to attract ghost attention which will make it harder to hide.

But Calliope was my first thought because I adore her character. I could go on for a long time about why but my answer for N is very long so I might save it for another post.

N - 3 things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom (or one of your choice)

Ok this might be a little controversial but…I don’t actually read that much Sandman fanfic anymore. In the beginning I read so much and while I still write, I think what’s kept me around is that I'm trying to write what I want to see more of. If that makes sense?

Firstly, I’d love to see more diversity.

Not just in ships but in fic in general, more gen, more that explore the female characters, more femslash (never written it but I know you mod Sandman Femslash Fans and I really wanted to do something for the challenge! Have an idea but I’ve been a bit ill recently). I wish there was more love for side characters/minor characters other than Hob. And that there were more explorations of the connections between characters outside of shipping.

I never really enjoy fandoms where one ship is a majority, even when I ship that ship, because in my experience it leads to everything being seen through the lens of that ship.

It tends to lean towards certain fanon interpretations being considered canon, with fandoms forgetting to question/step outside of the ships bubble. It's also just not very interesting. Even when there’s diversity within the ship itself I like to see more of a counterpoint. Otherwise it just…makes the universe feel smaller. Like only ever having chocolate cake on offer, maybe in ten different permutations, but at its core it’s chocolate. Different takes on things make people think, challenge them to think, make them alter their perspective, and it’s a healthy thing. I don’t think this fandom is very good for that tbh. 

Secondly, more characterisations of non-human characters that embrace the fact they are not human.

I see this very common binary of more human like = good vs less human like = bad (very simplified but I hope you understand my point!). So would like to see this not just for Dream, but for other characters too. I know we’re humans engaging with this fandom, so it's hard to envision that perspective, but I’d love to see more of us stepping outside of a human lens. As much as the fandom writes ‘nightmare’ Dream, it’s often shown as his dark or unrestrained side (or primarily a sex thing) so would love to see more diverse views on the spectrum of his aspect. On the flip side the human/retired Dream trope (which is personally a hard no for me unless heavily subverted) is far more popular than its opposite.

Again, this is about a desire for diversity. I'm not suggesting there's something wrong with having different tastes!! Just frustrating when it’s hard to find anything else.

I know this is fanfic, and so we all have our own interpretations and AUs, with many of us embracing the opportunity to write a drastically different version of a character. I just rarely see Dream characterised in a way that, again to my interpretation, I recognise as him. That feels authentically him. Other characters like Lucienne or Death or even Rose often feel like they are smoothed out to be perfect or written in a matchmaking role. I wish more fics let them be as flawed as they are, let them be wrong, let them make mistakes. I’d just love to see more complexity.

Thirdly - this is probably a subpoint of the above - but more of Dream actually enjoying his role, and fics that explore his relationship to humanity.

I'd love to see explorations of what it means to be Dream. I see so much of him rejecting it or being overwhelmed by it. While I do think his feelings are complicated, which in itself is very interesting, he’s not just going through the motions/in need of saving. I wish more people showed that it’s not just this burden he needs freedom from. He’s good at it too. That’s what makes things so tragic. He’s smart, communicative in his own way, but Dream just isn’t human, and so he’s not going to act like one.

(Btw this is not anti Dreamling. I’m not here to hate on anyone’s ship, especially one I do ship in certain ways. I just wish there was more diversity, and I personally disagree with a lot of interpretations of Dream’s character. As fans we’re all allowed to dislike a take/trope. I just don’t read those fics because I'm not the right audience for them. I'm only trying to point out that when those takes/tropes are everywhere it’s really hard to find anything to engage with.)

A strong pet peeve of mine that is fortunally not that common in media but does happen is when they go: "this is my super duper mythical ficional thing that doesn't exist" except is a thing that exists and was created/discovered before the media was made. Like did the creator made zero research into the thing they created? Did they made research and just decided to fictionalize it anyway? There are some examples that there is absolute no way people didn't know that they were just renaming a real thing, the description fits to well so why? I know there is a reason ofc it must be but it still deeply frustrates me.

P.S: if the think is really really obvious I consider it's just the author saying that this thing has a different name. Like yeah if somone show me an apple, states it tastes just like an apple but someone else calls it "glubby or whatever" I know it's just how they call apple, I mean as a brazilian I myself would've been calling it a maçã so it's fine. But if they get this obscure rock perfeclty right and say they invented it and is their ficional cool new rock that's just weird.

Well since Reddit is down I guess I have to ask this question on here

I want to buy New Vegas on Steam since it’s on sale for 2.50 dollars this week, but I already own the DLC through Epic. Do I have to buy the DLC along with it (also on sale for about 7 dollars) or can I just like.

Move all the DLC files into the Steam version? Is that something that can be done?

Asking here before I potentially break something or waste like 3 to 10 dollars
