On this day, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., Buddha was born. It was also on this that He attained enlightenment,…
Last night’s full moon is a celebratory symbol of the most important day in the Buddhist calendar. It signals the start of one of the biggest Buddhist festivals, Vesak, which honors Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death.
This “Seated Buddha Torso” is made from green stone, which is typical of sculptures made for early Buddhist centers in southern India. The pair of deer on the base of this sculpture indicates the Buddha’s first sermon, at the park at Sarnath, which was known for its deer. His raised hand, now missing, was likely making a gesture of teaching; his lower hand remains in the posture of meditation.
This work is currently on view in our Asian Art galleries on the second floor.
