FOTD #044 : violet cort! (cortinarius violaceus)

the violet cort / violet webcap is an agaric fungus in the family cortinariaceae. this fungus forms symbiotic relationships with the roots of various plant species, & is most commonly found in north america, asia & europe !!

the big question : can i bite it?? this fungus is labelled 'inedible', but can also be considered 'edible but not choice'.

"the fruit bodies are dark purple mushrooms with caps up to 15 cm (6 in) across, sporting gills underneath. the stalk measures 6 to 12 centimetres (2+1⁄3 to 4+2⁄3 in) by 1 to 2 cm (3⁄8 to 3⁄4 in), sometimes with a thicker base. the dark flesh has a smell reminiscent of cedar wood."

The others in the inner circle… they haven’t been here long enough, or they trust him too much, or they’d push only long enough to get to the 2nd level of excuses. They’re his friends, the only people in the gang he’d feel comfortable saying he trusts, the closest to family he’s got… but the others don’t know him well enough to get to the real reason he’s helping Manhattan find their second. Even Hotshot would believe it’s his history with Cowboy.

Phillip sempre foi amante de aventuras; especialmente das que pudessem acomodar o seu grande parceiro, Sansão (mais conhecido como o melhor cavalo do mundo, depois de enfrentar Malévola junto à ele). Graças às maravilhas têxteis de Briar, ele também tem acesso ao melhor equipamento para hipismo, sejam selas artesanais ou roupas apropriadas para a prática. Ao abrir o centro de treinamento Phillip's Knightly Stables, ele fez questão de manter também uma loja para tais equipamentos; o centro também atende aulas de hipismo, para cavaleiros ou jovens cavalos, serviços de hospedagem para os equinos e até mesmo realiza pequenos eventos e torneios fora de campeonato olímpico.

Nascer um príncipe é questão de sorte. Quem não gostaria de chegar ao mundo com uma colher de ouro na boca? Bem, ter bons pais também é questão de sorte, e um azar não anula o outro. O rei Hubert, progenitor de Phillip, era diplomático, mas muito tradicional e conservador; um príncipe não é amigo de plebeus, um príncipe não busca o próprio cavalo, um príncipe se relaciona apenas com a corte... A rainha Violet nada mais fazia do que quietamente assentir, quase como uma figurante em sua própria história. Provavelmente porque também havia dado a sorte de ser prometida ao Hubert na infância, e também não teve muitas escolhas possíveis em sua vida se não seguir fielmente a vontade dos pais. Mas a cada palavra que Phillip ouvia, era lhe podado algum desejo. Desde pequeno, ser príncipe não era tanto sinônimo de "fazer o que quiser"; ele teve que construir e conquistar esse poder.

Seu primário dever era se preparar para o trono. Rei ele haveria de ser, em algum lugar... nem que Hubert tivesse que criá-lo um novo reino. Esgrima, hipismo e piano eram apenas hobbies, que serviam para distrair a sua cabeça e para que continuasse a cumprir com sua agenda sem muitas objeções. Era um treinamento nada agressivo em sua prática, mas de natureza muito controladora. Hubert orquestrava cada movimento baseado em sua ambição e pelo interesse em fortalecer suas alianças políticas, tendo a certeza de que seu reino se expandiria ao de sua nora. A cada dia, porém, a relação entre Hubert e Phillip tornava-se mais distante conforme o jovem príncipe sentia-se refém das vontades alheias. E, definitivamente, a ideia não o agradava.

Apesar dele muito insistir, Phillip não tinha muitos ouvidos para seu pai, especialmente quando se tratava de seu noivado. Não entrava em sua cabeça que deveria se casar com uma princesa que havia visto somente uma única vez, quando eram crianças... Phillip sempre aspirou autonomia e liberdade, e este era um grande motivo que o levou a apreciar tanto suas aventuras equestres! Correr livremente com seu cavalo o oferecia uma sensação reconfortante. Phillip estava longe de ser o mais interessado em políticas da corte, ainda que as festas não fossem de todo ruins. Como seria simplesmente não ser príncipe? Como seria viver como um guarda real, presente naquele ambiente da corte, mas livre para separar sua vida pessoal de seu trabalho, de certa forma? Sua angústia começou a gerar discussões mais verbais com o rei; antes de sua adolescência, a inconformação de Phillip era velada e mais facilmente ignorada pelo monarca. Fugindo de suas responsabilidades, o príncipe podia passar horas nos estábulos e, quando saía para cavalgar, recusava-se a retornar ao castelo tão cedo.

FOTD #091 : spotted cort! (cortinarius iodes)

the spotted cort (also viscid violet cort) is an agaric fungus in the family cortinariaceae :-) it occurs in many different areas of north america, south america, central america & northern asia. this mushroom mostly forms associations with deciduous trees !!

the big question : can i bite it??

it is technically edible, yes - but "not recommended for consumption".

c. iodes description :

"the cap is initially bell-shaped before becoming broadly convex & then flat in maturity (sometimes retaining a broad umbo), & attains a diameter of 2–6 cm (0.8–2.4 in). the cap surface is slimy (in wet weather) & smooth, & has a lilac or purplish colour. the flesh is white, firm, & thin. the colour fades in maturity, & the cap develops irregular yellowish spots, or becomes yellowish in the centre. gills are attached to the stem & packed together closely. they are lilac to violet when young, but become rusty brown to greyish cinnamon when the spores mature. the stem measures 4–7 cm (1.6–2.8 in) long by 0.5–1.5 cm (0.2–0.6 in) thick, & is nearly equal in width throughout other than a somewhat bulbous base. it is solid (i.e., not hollow), slimy, smooth, & has violet or purplish colours that are usually lighter than the cap; sometimes, the stem base is more or less white. the cobweb-like, pale violet partial veil leaves a zone of thin, purple or rusty fibers on the upper stem."
