Everybody in my local mushroom group is finding tons of munchable or magic mushrooms and I've been too sick and too busy to go hunting.

Hey, @headspace-hotel I picked up a book tonight that I think you'd love if you haven't already seen it.
It's the oddest thing, that I saw a book and thought of an Internet stranger, but, well, here we are.

Placomaronea mendozae
Learned a new word today: gomphate. According to wikipedia, this is when “squamules [are] elevated with expansion of the mycelial base above the substrate.” So like the little scale-like lobes are resting on a bed of fungal hyphae that makes them stick up a bit from the rock. Cool. Glad there is a hyper-specific term for that for the like, 5 lichens it applies to. Why are taxonomists like this? So yes, as you may have guessed, P. mendozae is a lichen that has gomphate squamules. These gomphate squamules are smooth, shiny, and yellow in color. P. mendozae produces round apothecia with a flat, darker-yellow disc. It grows on acidic rock in mountainous regions of SW North America and South America. And did I mention it is gomphate yet?
