the great thing about hua cheng’s devotion is I straight up cannot get enough of it. I will reread fics hundreds of times just to hear him describe the sheer depth of the adoration he feels for xie lian. it’s therapeutic to hear about how much love someone can be capable of

another reason i think that xie lian felt an instant connection on the ox cart is because he and hua cheng both grew up in xianle.
there are maybe 4 people still alive that grew up in that culture. based on my own experience, you can pick up on things like accent, cadence, references, and humor that suggest a person is from the same place as you without consciously noticing it. that sense of comfort and similarity probably played into their instant chemistry.

you cannot tease wei wuxian and hua cheng hunting for funsies and not show that to us??? it has to go one of two ways right? either an absolute visious blood bath where everyone cowers in fear or the equivalent of a teenage girl's slumber party. both??? both.

Hunting each other for sport is the keystone to a fun slumber party

Fandom Gripe #23: I know that fandom is in some deep denial about its treatment of female characters that are canonically involved with fan favorite m/m ships, but do y’all realize that when you disappear female characters from the narrative wholesale to push the idea that your canonically straight fav was “secretly gay all along!” you’re making several bad implications? That 1) bi men don’t exist, 2) bi men do exist, but those who have genuinely loved a woman before cannot genuinely love a man after that (therefore bi men don’t exist in practice), 3) women cannot inspire genuine love and devotion in men, therefore any relationship with a woman is “lesser” than the one they later have a man (see previous parenthesis), or 4) to acknowledge the existence of a lovable woman who isn’t a terrible person, where if a relationship previously existed, it did not end because of “incompatibility,” is enough to destabilize the present relationship between two queer men?
Because why is the tgcf fandom allergic to acknowledging that He Xuan had a whole ass fiancée that he loved? Why does no one ever seem to remember that the kidnappings and murders of He Xuan’s sister and fiancée were the final straws that sent him on his rampage, and he still keeps a shrine to them in the present-day of the story? Why is her entire existence and significance to He Xuan as a man, character, and to his character arc disappeared in favor of pushing Shi Qingxuan—the brother of the man responsible for his fiancée’s death—into that same role, as if to say that her impact on He Xuan is significant... just not when it's from her? Why does He Xuan’s life in fandom essentially begin not just after her death but because of it?

what people don't get about hualian is that they're literally like. jock and alternative art student. xie lian lives like a frat boy (mattress on the floor and nothing else in his room, no standards for his own well-being, can't cook and ends up eating what could be classified as biohazards) and is really enthusiastic about fighting as a hobby. meanwhile hua cheng rocks up to the function in his cunty little outfits every day of the week, bells on his boots and the red eyeliner slayed, obviously has taste but is soooo in love with his boyfriend who only ever wears cargo shorts and the most fucked up questionable hoodies you've ever seen. hua cheng wants xie lian to have nice things but it's always like. "babe i promise it's no trouble can we please get you a bedframe??" nd xie lian is obviously so enamored with his cool alt boyfriend who wears skirts sometimes and never misses a beat on a bitchy comment that's just the way it is. basically if your hualian concept doesn't have hua cheng as the hot goth gf you just don't get it

the way HC grew up thinking he was weak, monstrous, repulsive, was told that he was cursed, and believed that he had to spend 800 years becoming better, stronger, more powerful, for XL, bc he wanted to protect XL -
but then he meets XL again, and shortly after becoming friends, XL tells HC that he doesn't care if HC is hideous, doesn't care if HC is a beggar or royalty, a ghost or human. later on, XL even tells HC that he doesn't care if HC is strong or weak, at his lowest or highest point, in worst or best moments - XL loves HC no matter what state HC may be in, he loves him simply bc he is HC.
and this unconditional love from XL is so important to HC, so healing for HC, and is exactly why it shaped HC so inexorably, both 800 years ago and 800 years later. bc XL truly is the kind of person who loves someone for who they are, not how they appear on the outside.
and HC fully reciprocates this unconditional love by loving XL no matter if XL is the god-pleasing crown prince or the broken husk of a man wearing bwx's mask trying to take revenge. HC returns this unconditional love by repeating XL's words back to him, what matters is you, not the state of you.

Something about Hua Cheng's expression here is killing me--I know this is supposed to be a delicate moment of reassurance but the pure hater energy radiating off of him is just immaculate
#tgcf#hua cheng#xie lian#hualian#words cannot express how much I love hua cheng being a hater#hua cheng in this pic is that energy when you keep spamming the A button when an npc you don't like won't stop talking#like his face when lang qianqiu keeps going on and on about his parents meeting an untimely unjust and grisly end#is so 'it was hundreds of years ago and it wasn't even gege's fault for fucks sake grow up'#'leave my goddamn wife alone he raised you with love and diligence'#'you had your bloody revenge what more do you want. figure it out far away from us.'#spoken like a true ghost king who slaps eming every single time it expresses a single inconvenient emotion he has#every day i have to resist the urge to gush about hc he's just hilarious and peak every single time i love him#no notes just banger after banger after banger#that's the face of a man who was orphaned as a child and clawed his way through life to survive and keep his loved one alive + well#a bastion of unmoving strength for 800 years#unmoved by the whining of a young man born with everything and mourning the loss of his innocence way past his expiration date#10/10 hua cheng you've done it again#hc said 'oh? a traumatic life event? we have several dozens of those git gud'#and honestly i mean that with no malice i just feel like lang qianqiu is old enough to start parsing the world in a more nuanced way ;;;;;#as much as xl thought lying to him was the best outcome hc was right--the truth d o e s matter--and not just to absolve xl#its also about giving lang qianqiu closure and moving on. about qi rong facing the consequences of his actions#so much of what is wrong with the heavenly court is the obsession with maintaining appearances over being sincere#and so much of what hc adores about xl is that xl was never really interested in those empty words and empty sentiments#he truly wanted people to prosper and live well no matter the cost to himself

do you ever think about hua cheng carving the statues
hua cheng's statues are like. the only form of comfort he could have in tong'lu. the only distraction. the only way to physically touch his god. the only way to pray to him. the only way to see him. the only way to not feel alone. the only way to bring his memories to life. the only way to make sure he would never forget his face.
the statues were a hobby, something to pass time, something to get his mind off his daily life of killing and surviving, something to ground himself, to memorize the shape of his god again and again, to catalogue every facets of him, to surround himself with what saved him everytime. the statues were reminders. prayers. offerings. memories.
it's said the first statues were really not well-done. it's said some of the art on the walls was done as if the artist was in a trance and in great suffering. imagine hua cheng carving the stone incessantly in the dark. longing to depict him perfectly. to honor him and to feel him. to see him. imagine him racking up every single memory he had of xie lian and etching it into stone to make it as permanent as his faith. imagine him talking to them. praying. crying. promising that he'll find him, that he'll do his best, that he'll be the best for him.
but the statues are cold and still and never talk back. and in the end he's alone. in the dark. with his memories of the one that taught him love quiet like the deads around him. and he doesn't know what happened to the real, flesh and blood xie lian and he won't know until he gets out of there

I love fics where Hua Cheng's inner monologue is basically "Oh wow gege just paid attention to me. I'm going to bang my head against the wall" because honestly that's what I imagine TGCF would sound like from his point of view

Thinking about An Le again and all the potential everything with him...
Lang Qianqiu's best friend who befriended him specifically as part of a rebellion plot
Mentored by Qi Rong, and was probably pretty close to him (QR seems to have been around since before XL became LQQ's mentor so it sounds like QR practically raised him since he was a kid)
HIS DEATH WAS ACTUALLY REALLY BRUTAL (deserved but yikes!)
Still really want to know what his dynamic with QR was like. Did QR feel anything about his death...
Was he seen as a champion of the Xianle people? We know how pure and heroic LQQ is, so I feel like An Le would have had to outwardly be like that too for them to be close friends
Was LQQ there for his death or did he learn of it later... (probably the latter because he had no idea An Le hated him and I doubt that's something An Le would conceal on his death bed. He's dying, may as well stick the knife into his bestie as deep as it will go!)
Anyway it is just thinking about An Le hours and I really hope the donghua expands on him a little the way it did for Pei Xiu & Banyue's backstory before

Anyone want to be MXTX novel buddies with me? 🥺
I want to talk about the Blorbos from my Books!
SVSSS is probably my favourite one but I am fixating on TGCF currently (annoying because I don't have any HOB books except for the first one, maybe I'll go buy a couple this month. Even if I wanted to read it online the only translations are extremely bad... which I totally understand, because why not support the author! But I don't always have the money to buy them, I've read the others though!)
My Ships:
SV: Bingqiu, Binggeyuan, Bing2qiu (poly with bingge), Moshang, Qijiu, NingFan
MDZS: Wangxian, WangNingXian, SangCheng, QinYao (but not as siblings), NieQing, Xuanli, XueQing, songxiao
TGCF: based on what I have read, spoilers (sought out on my own) and fanfics: Hualian, Fengqing, Quanyin, and Pei Su x Ban Yue. (Since I know how popular it is, I should mention it: I don't ship B. e. e. f. l. e. a. f. i understand why someone might, but I prefer them as tragic friends. I can't see SQX forgiving HX in canon. I can see HX realizing that he missed SQX and wanted to be friends again, but it's too late. Even in an AU I've been concocting, I don't see them romantically. At MOST I could see them as Platonic Soulmates, similar to the way I see Mu Qing and Xie Lian.)

i have the same feeling re "pit madness" as i do yiling patriarch/corruption things from mdzs in that i think robbing characters of agency in order to make a "quick fix" or excuse away a characters actions is kinda lame and over blown by fandom
i don't think im saying anything original here but especially in the case of jason the whole "stop killing and repent and we will help you expunge your demons" thing like what are you catholic?
the devil made me do it is boring
