#we deserved to see Luke thriving as a Jedi because you know he would

Sometimes, I really want an animated show about the OT characters. Their adventures, serious and silly, as they become friends and family long before Luke and Leia discover that they're siblings. Stories about Leia struggling with going from princess to general. Luke struggling with being a Jedi and a commander. The Rogue Squadron and their adventures. Han and Chewie barely keeping up with the Space Twin shenanigans.
But, then I remember how each of these characters were treated in the Sequel Trilogy, and I realise that it doesn't matter. No amount of stories about them will change the fact that they all die alone away from each other, that they gave up their childhood, their homes, themselves to the safety of the galaxy and that none of it ever mattered. And I can't enjoy canon stories about them because it won't change their ending, and I can't forget that.

I love Anakin as a character but I think Star Wars as a whole needs to be less forgiving of him and his actions and I think Rex is the perfect character to explore this idea.
Rex wants to save his brothers more than anything and we know that he fails and never recovers from the trauma. It was an impossible task but he fought so hard for it. The clones don’t become a thriving community after the Empire falls. Few live to remember their sacrifice or that they were even there to begin with. They’re wiped off the map and that’s it and Rex just has the live with it.
Imagine realistically how you would feel if you were him and you learned that a huge reason why the Empire was even allowed to rise in the first place is because of the man who you trusted, who was one of your closest friends for three years, who convinced you that he thought of you as a person unlike the rest of the galaxy. I wouldn’t ever be able to look past it, and I don’t think Rex would or should either.
Obi Wan considers Anakin metaphorically dead because it’s the only way to cope with the grief.
Ahsoka has a more complicated view of him because of the distance leaving the Jedi order put between them.
Luke is able to forgive him in the only way that is narratively compelling, because he sees him as his father and not as the monster everyone else does.
Leia never forgives him (nor should she) but grows to understand him more over time.
Padme uses her dying breath to vouch for him even if he doesn’t deserve it.
If Rex didn’t forgive Anakin, it would offer yet another perspective. He is someone who loved Anakin, but Anakin is a huge reason why his brothers are dead. Anakin is the one who used his brothers as the tools they had always been told they were to march on the Jedi temple and murder the Jedi, the only allies the Clones ever truly had. Everything that happens during the reign of the Empire, including whatever goes down in the Bad Batch finale, is part of a huge domino effect because of Anakin’s choices. It would be tragic to see their friendship end this way, but Rex’s entire life is rife with tragedy. Ahsoka is the only positive result of his friendship with Anakin left. They only have each other.
I want Rex to be angry at him. Anakin’s actions are abhorrent and to downplay them only does Anakin a disservice as a character and denies his agency. Yes, he’s a victim of Palpatine’s grooming. He is also the perpetrator of a literal reign of terror and there are few groups of people who are bigger victims of the Empire he helped create than the clones.

Hi, I dont read alot (of books) but I was just wondering, did Anakin/vader ever see people he helped/freed (during his time as a jedi) being oppressed by the empire. Did he feel pity or sorrow for them? Or had he totally unplugged from those emotions at that point ?
No. Anakin was to broken to feel sorry for anyone but himself. People have this idea of Vader being a sadistic monster who thrived on the suffering he caused but the truth is he was too lethargic to care. He didn’t stay with Palpatine out enjoyment or even loyalty. He stayed because he had nowhere else go, no one else to be with.
You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself … It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith— Because now your self is all you will ever have. And you rage and scream and reach through the Force to crush the *shadow* who has destroyed you, but you are so far less now than what you were, you are more than half machine, you are like a painter gone blind, a composer gone deaf, you can remember where the power was but the power you can touch is only a memory, and so with all your world-destroying fury it is only droids around you that implode, and equipment, and the table on which you were strapped shatters, and in the end, you cannot touch the shadow. In the end, you do not even want to. In the end, the shadow is all you have left. Because the shadow understands you, the shadow forgives you, the shadow gathers you unto itself— And within your furnace heart, you burn in your own flame. This is how it feels to be Anakin Skywalker. Forever … [Matthew Stover. Revenge of the Sith]
What Vader appeared to be  - no fucks given BAMF – were very different from what he truly was: Palpatine’s slave. Vader, once you get to know him, is not a scary monster. He’s a quite pathetic and hopeless man.
He wasn’t a sadistic control freak like Palpatine and he didn’t *enjoy* hurting people he didn’t feel deserve to be hurt but he was too damaged and broken to do anything about it. he kind of just went with it.
In one of the comics, he has to face the truth that the Empire is enslaving people and he is upset about it. but he does nothing because there's nothing left in him. for him to pity them, he’d have to empathize with them and that’s something he couldn’t afford to do. He was too trapped in his own private little hell to feel bad for people.
Again the smile or snarl from his Master. “You were a traitor, were you not, Lord Vader?” Vader’s breathing caught on the hook of sudden anger. “What did you say?”
“To the Jedi. To Padmé. To Obi-Wan. To all those you loved.” His Master turned to look at him, his eyes reflecting the flames.
Vader didn’t know the answer his Master wanted to hear, so he simply answered with the truth. “Yes.” [Paul S. Kemp. Lords of the Sith]
If he couldn’t even care enough to defend himself from his master abusive behavior, I doubt he’d ever care enough to pity a stranger.
When it comes to Vader’s apathetic, one of the best examples I can think of is his ‘relationship’ with Drua. In one of the books, Vader and Palpatine are stranded. They run into a girl and Vader saves her life:
“Come here, girl,” the Emperor said, putting the power of the Force into his command. Unable to resist, the girl walked out of the tree line until she stood, small and vulnerable, before him. With preternatural speed the Emperor drew, ignited, and slashed at the girl with his lightsaber, but Vader had sensed his Master’s intent and moved with greater speed, igniting his own blade and intercepting his Master’s blow before it could land. The girl, under the sway of the Emperor’s power, seemed scarcely to notice the danger. She simply stood there, staring vacantly, her face aglow in the red light of the crossed blades. The Emperor’s mouth twisted in a snarl, and Vader felt his power gathering. Behind Vader, Deez raised his rifle and aimed it at Vader’s back, but Vader stretched his free hand back and unleashed a blast of power that lifted the guardsman from his feet and flung him into the trees. Branches cracked audibly under the impact of Deez’s body. Vader and his Master stared at each other across the sizzling glow of their crossed blades. “Has it come to this?” his Master said. He sounded calm, almost resigned, but not at all surprised. The tone surprised Vader. “Forgive me, Master,” he said, and deactivated his blade. “I think the girl can be of use to us.” [Paul S. Kemp. Lords of the Sith]
The girl, Drua, takes them to very home and does everything she can to help them. After everything was said and done, Palpatine orders Vader to kill her and everyone in her village. And Vader does it. Not because he wants it. but because he’s too apathetic to care. Too trapped in his toxic relationship with Palpatine to see things for what they really were.
“There’s work for that yet, my friend,” the Emperor said, nodding at the hilt of Vader’s blade.
 “Master?”
“The villagers, Lord Vader. Drua and her people. We can’t allow so many witnesses to live. I’ll wait for you here.”
Vader looked from his Master to the dark mouth of the mine inside of which Drua and the rest of the villagers had fled. He felt the Emperor’s eyes on him, the intensity of the gaze, the weight of his expectations, and Vader knew that the day’s events had been only half about depleting a rebel movement before it could grow. They had also, as Vader had suspected, been about testing him, forcing him to face the ghosts of his past and exorcise them forever and fully. He saw that more clearly now; saw, too, that his Master was right to administer the test. It also explained why his Master had shown so little of his true power throughout the day. Perhaps he’d wanted Vader to rely on himself to overcome the challenges they’d faced. Or perhaps he’d wanted to seem weaker than he was, to draw out any treacherous ambitions Vader may have held. “I hear and I obey, Master,” Vader said. He ignited his lightsaber and strode toward the cave, his mind drifting back to another day, a day when he strode into the Jedi Temple filled with nothing but younglings. He’d slaughtered them then, and he would slaughter the Twi’leks now. His Master’s laughter followed him into the cave, and it lingered in his mind, louder even than the screams of the Twi’leks as they began to die by his blade. When it was done, he returned to his Master’s side. “Well done, old friend,” Darth Sidious said. He wiped his hands, as if to clean them of dirt. “And now let’s move on to more important things.” [Paul S. Kemp. Lords of the Sith]
The only time Vader cared enough to influence his behavior was with Luke. All the other times, there were a glimpse of something – of the old Anakin – like when he saw C3PO or even Ahsoka. But not enough for him empathize with people.
Qui-Gon had a interesting theory about this. He believed Anakin – to survive – had to bury that side of him so Vader could exist. An Anakin who cares cannot be Vader. He buried all the good things about Anakin.
“Master, is Darth Vader Anakin?”
“Yes,” Qui-Gon’s voice replied. “Although the Anakin you and I knew is imprisoned by the dark side. […]The core of Anakin that resides in Vader grasps that Tatooine is the source of nearly everything that causes him pain. Vader will never set foot on Tatooine, if only out of fear of reawakening Anakin.” [Ryder Windham. The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi]
As terrible as life as Vader is, facing Anakin Skywalker’s decisions and living with them would be much, much harder. That’s why only when Luke demonstrated his unconditional love that Anakin allowed himself to reemerge.
Vader saw his son crying, and knew it must have been at the horror of the face the boy beheld. It intensified, momentarily, Vader’s own sense of anguish—to his crimes, now, he added guilt at the imagined repugnance of his appearance. But then this brought him to mind of the way he used to look—striking, and grand, with a wry tilt to his brow that hinted of invincibility and took in all of life with a wink. Yes, that was how he’d looked once. And this memory brought a wave of other memories with it. Memories of brotherhood, and home. His dear wife. The freedom of deep space. Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan, his friend … and how that friendship had turned. Turned, he knew not how—but got injected, nonetheless, with some uncaring virulence that festered, until … hold. These were memories he wanted none of, not now. Memories of molten lava, crawling up his back … no. This boy had pulled him from that pit—here, now, with this act. This boy was good. The boy was good, and the boy had come from him—so there must have been good in him, too. He smiled up again at his son, and for the first time, loved him. And for the first time in many long years, loved himself again, as well.  [James Kahn. Return of the Jedi]
Vader didn’t hate the world. He hated himself.
And because of that he bury everything that was remotely good and positive about himself as deep as he could. So his behavior, his lack of empathy wasn’t about him being sadistic. He was simply too broken and trapped in a deeply abusive relationship to care for the world around him.

i just realized the reason the “rey nobody/rey skywalker/rey kenobi/rey palpatine” stuff never worked for me as a source of angst is the same reason that chewie being bequeathed leia’s medal at the end of tros didn’t work for jay exci in their “tros is an embarrassment” video, and that reason is that it’s a question not meant for the story but for the audience
the sequel’s whole sense of tension is built around Who Rey Is because i guess the writers thought we want a Luke I Am Your Father moment, when the Luke I Am Your Father moment was never a driving force for the ot - we’re not interested in lineage but in personal connection. the only reason it matters that vader is luke’s father is what luke does with that information. we don’t question luke having force powers in a new hope because he’s a ““nobody”“ (granted the concept of a skywalker lineage doesn’t exist yet, but still), we don’t even assume in empire that luke’s force power comes from vader. i don’t think we ever came close to assuming that force sensitivity is lineal at all - it’s not a question of a force dynasty, luke doesn’t get any power or importance from being vader’s son, it’s literally never brought up by anyone in the movies aside from luke, leia, vader, and palpatine. it’s so close to being a non-issue it kind of blows my mind the more i think about it. it’s not even because vader is his father that luke ultimately stops from killing him - maybe the final vader/luke duel would have had the same ending if vader had been just a big scary villain with no personal connection to luke, because luke doesn’t think “oh i can’t kill my father”, he thinks “oh i can’t kill anyone in anger”. at least strictly in movie canon, no one gives a shit about luke’s lineage other than luke and leia and the bad guys.
the prequel trilogy on the other hand also doesn’t give a shit about lineage past the first movie, and it’s no big secret. anakin is just Force Jesus and that’s that on that. shmi virgin birth’d him and we never hear ANY of it EVER AGAIN even in phantom menace. it’s 100% a non-issue. the prequels take place when the jedi order is, if not thriving, at least at some amount of strength, and we see hundreds of jedi whose presence in the jedi order is never explained by force dynasties or lineages. i can’t stress this enough but it’s a non-issue. no one gives a shit about “anyone can be a jedi” because literally anyone can be a jedi. do we care where obi-wan “got” the force? qui-gon? mace windu? fucking yoda? hell no. we don’t need their breeding papers ffs. they’re just jedi and they came from anywhere (unless we get into tie-in materials but a lot of people don’t). i just noticed that there’s (i think) a kaminoan jedi on the council in phantom menace which doesn’t really prove anything, i just thought it was cool. so one more time for jj abrams, rian johnson, chris terrio, lawrence kasdan, etc - no one. gives. a shit. about. force. lineages.
in the sequel trilogy, everyone is so wrapped up in Who Rey Is that they never actually give her a personality past tfa, just a ~mysterious past~ and a poorly executed identity crisis, all for the audience’s sake, because the writers think we care about Who Rey(’s Parents Are) when we couldn’t give less of a shit, we just want a fun flawed desert girl getting force powers and kicking space nazi ass. the whole “rey nobody subverts expectations because it shows jedi can come from anywhere!!!!” thing subverts NOTHING because there was no previous expectation that she was a skywalker or a kenobi or (god help us) a palpatine or a whatever, because there is no belief that only skywalkers can be force-users because most of us have seen the prequel trilogy, or have heard about that thing called the jedi order which was def not populated solely by skywalkers and palpatines, or have, you know, at least heard of obi-wan kenobi and yoda, because we’re not fucking imbeciles and we understand that anyone can be a force-user...... until tfa went to great lengths to set us up to expect something from her lineage. rian fucking johnson didn’t go “you elitist fucks, thinking every main star wars jedi has to be a skywalker for no reason!!!!” and then really give us what we deserved for being skywalker snobs by making rey a nobody. he was like “you know that hint that you were given in good faith in tfa that rey’s parentage was a plot point? well fuck you, it was nothing, don’t you feel silly sitting there with your snobbery around your ankles", like an asshole. i don’t want to talk about tros.
so, yeah. rey’s lineage was not and never was an organic element in the actual story of the sequels. it was thrown in because of some misguided idea that Skywalker Lineage is an important thing in star wars lore when it’s absolutely 100% not, even just in the movies. it was an example of writers talking down to the audience - us - and telling stories based on inaccurate/questionable star wars tropes, preconceived notions, and surface-level assumptions instead of by people who actually cared about the messages and ideals of star wars and have more than two star wars-themed brain cells to rub together.
“rey skywalker” my fucking foot

anyway so TROS has a brutal, loveless, miserable ending that was completely unnecessary (and makes me feel sick).
obviously im talking about the fate of Ben Solo, and how it's probably the least hopeful ending i could think of for him. here's my numbered list on the top 5 worst things TROS did to Ben (in no particular order, they all suck).
Palpatine threw him down a pit. Basic fact, Ben spent his whole life tortured by Palpatine/Snoke, canonically even when he was still in the womb. Palpatine/Snoke poisoned his entire life, and I’d like to make the obvious statment that: it wasn’t Ben’s fault. He was child, and no one around him was there to/willing to help him. No one looked at him and wanted to protect him, not really. Leia may have sent him to Luke under the guise of protection, but really it was all fear based. She just wanted someone to fix him. Ben Solo has been disregarded and shoved aside his whole life. Here are a few quick examples:  -as i just mentioned he was sent away (despite his mother being a fully trained Jedi) because his feelings and the force conflicted. -Luke tried to kill him for the same reasons his parents feared him -Snoke treated him like a play toy and was never satisfied with him (literally throwing Kylo to the ground when he disappointed) -and then at the end of TLJ, Luke just openly taunts him for being a screw up! Therefore, being disregarded as unimportant in the final take down (with his life long abuser), like he has been his entire life is the worst sentiment. At the very end, when Kylo Ren is dead, and Ben Solo has reemerged you’d think that the narrative would finally give him a strong standing. He knows who he is, he finally knows what he wants, and after being tortured he rises up to dig his feet in, AND YET Palpatine was still able to treat him like actual garbage. Throw him down a pit! And that's it! Just Ben Solo disregarded... again.
Leia's love redeemed him. Relax, I think Leia reaching out (and giving Ben the Han memory/vision thing? correct me gently if I’m wrong) was fantastic. Like despite feeling rejected by his parents, and in an ironic twist telling Rey to stop needing her parents in TLJ, Kylo can’t stop needing his parents. After killing his father, it’s so clear that he was full of intense amounts of regrets, but to him it was his moment of no return. He did it, because he was brainwashed into believing that this is who he was meant to be. Leia was afraid of him, Luke saw evil in him, Palpatine/Snoke whispered in his ear forever convincing him that we was supposed to be the bad guy. The New Vader. But Leia reaching out, Han’s memory, and the forgiveness it afford him is what gave him strength to go back to light. That’s beautiful. He finally understood that his parents loved him, no matter where he stood. BUT. But, here is the flaw. This is why I feel this was dirty. What was Leia's motive? It was completely ambiguous. All three movies we are unsure how she feels about Ben, other than: she thought he'd come back, then she was sure he wouldn't (oh and i guess she didn’t initially want to forget about him). She only decided to reach out when she could sense Rey (and the whole of the Resistance) was in danger. Apparently, she could have called to his resoundingly conflicted heart, at anytime but for whatever reason she didn't. Who’s to say if the intent really was to make him feel loved/understood, I mean Maz has a speech about it explaining what Leia was doing--the last attempt to save Ben Solo. But without that???? Totally unclear. What was she even doing? The timing that she did it in, can’t lead me to any other can conclusion than a last stitch effort to save the Resistance. Ben recieved so much from it. It literally caused his transformation, but was that even Leia’s intent? I think the movie wants you to assume that it was. But it’s also confusing, and holds itself up for scrutiny because she called to him at the perfect moment for Rey to kill him. I guess she just hoped Rey wouldn't???? I mean it seems like Rey sensed Leia’s presence/message too, and maybe that was Leia finally protecting her son. If this was all Ben needed, his mom to say his name, and his father to forgive him, it irks me that Leia wouldn’t try before that moment.
“Just you,” and then it was literally just Rey. Let’s do a quick play by play, Kylo gets the upper hand during the Death Star fight, Leia distracts him, Rey decides to kill him, hears Leia too, force heals him, tells him she wanted Ben Solo’s hand not Kylo’s, ditches his ass again. Then Kylo sees Han, throws the coolest light saber ever into the ocean, and is finally Ben Solo. Amazing. Ben then goes to Rey where Palpatine is, kicks ass against the Knights of Ren, alone (apart from that dope force bond light saber trick), he and Rey team up again, the find out they are two halves of the same soul, Ben gets tossed like garbage, Rey did that, she dies, Ben saves her, they kiss, and that’s the end of Ben Solo. That’s it. No one sees Ben Solo but Rey. All Kylo could see in the force bond was Just Rey, and the only person who got to see Ben Solo alive and complete, was Just Rey. That’s not pretty. That doesn’t even strike me as romantic. That’s soul crushing. Ben Solo will never get to exist outside of what Rey saw. He died hated by everyone. He died, and he will be forgotten. Left behind like a villain, who’s redemption was saw by only one. If Ben had lived, he would have been able to thrive and become someone who was loved and appreciated by others. It’s sick, and unfair that he died essentially alone. With only one person to remember him fondly. The Skywalker legacy ends in unseen heroism, and a whole galaxy of hate.
Rey fought Palpatine alone. Most of why this is garbage is in point 1, but I have to expand it a bit more with Rey V. Palpatine. Ben and Rey should have fought Palpatine together. Rey didn’t need a shining moment of heroism where she did the final battle all alone. Rey and Ben, as canonically established, are two sides of the same coin. Two halves of the same soul. One protagonist, two characters. She had Luke’s light saber, and Leia’s. Ben should have gotten to use Leia’s against Palpatine. They should have fought side by side, in the final stand of being together, being one. Because Rey had even LESS build up to deserve a win over Snoke. All of her backstory and connection to him was crammed in our faces in the third act of this trilogy. Ben's fight has been waiting since day one. It was bizarre and cruel to give Rey both light sabers.
He died.

Hey! My names Vidas (he/him) and if you have enough time, I’d love to be apart of the Star Wars matchmaking thing :)
I’m about 5’8 and rather curvy, but also kinda muscular. I have split dried hair (black/white) and I have pretty intense grey eyes. I always look a bit messy but it works for me somehow. I wear a lot of jeans, tshirts, flannels, and sweaters, all in muted colors. I have one earring, a long gold leaf that I always wear with nothing in the other. I wear a few necklaces because they’re crystals that often bring me luck! I’m always wearing platforms so people assume I’m like 5’11. People tell me that I’m really intimidating, but I’m sarcastic and friendly once you get to know me.
I bake a lot ands it’s one of my favorite things to do. My sourdough starters name is Ben (after Obi-Wan) and he’s almost 3 years old! I’m also really into figure drawing (naked people). I’m a bit of an impressionistic artist, and I love to use bold ink and softer charcoal when I draw, it gets messy though. I’m going to be a trauma surgeon one day, or at least work in emergency medicine, it’s a huge passion of mine. I love all things literature, from poetry and world classics to high fantasy and sci-fi, I love it all. I’m a bit of a poet and I’ve been known to write really impressive stuff for my loved ones.
I’m one of those people who remembers the little things people say and do. I always love the surprised look on someone’s face when I ask about something most anyone else would have forgotten. I pay great attention to detail, and often pick up on things much faster than my friends. I need help seeing the bigger picture sometimes, but I do my best not to be closed minded. My main love language is physical touch. I’m normally really tough averse, so when I want to be near/cuddle someone it’s a big deal. I also enjoy gift giving and acts of service. It’s mostly small things like a rock that I thought was super cool or the last in a batch of cookies. I like to pamper my partners, and although we both need to share responsibility for everything, I thrive off making people feel safe and cared for.
I’m looking for someone who will respect my need for space and autonomy. I want someone that will make me feel safe and cared for like I want to do for them. I love listening to people talk about things they love, and talking about things I love so we both need to be pretty good listeners. I’m really bad at social situations so I need someone who will help me feel ok in public spaces.
I experience sensory overloads and panic attacks, as well as having OCD so I need someone who can adapt to my special needs.
Also, can I have a male character please?
Thank you so munch for sing this I’m super excited!!! :D
hi vidas!!! thanks for your submission!! your star wars match is …. luke skywalker!
* oh man, you and luke!!! I think you would be a great fit for him, and vice versa. you can help build eachother up.
* this man cannot take care of himself; rather, he CAN, but often doesn’t. luke can get lost in thought, perhaps beset by his past with his father, the intimidating task of starting a jedi school … he could forget to eat and take care of himself. with your love language and your nature, I feel like you can definitely help luke see that he and his body deserve kindness and good things. he is not his father!!
* LIKEWISE, I think luke would be the perfect partner for you!!!
* if you need space? perfect! he can go out in some field and meditate! building a jedi academy leaves him with a lot to do.
* especially post-ROTJ luke, he would be an understanding, patient, and caring partner for you and your needs. if you ask for his help, he could help you meditate and center your thoughts. his handling of the force totally comes in handy here! the man exudes calm. luke would show his love for you by giving you gentle touches, too!
* overall, I think you and luke would be a great match because you can build eachother up and show your love for eachother through acts of service!! plus y’all would be such a power couple !!! mr. chanel boots himself!

some quick verse + tlj thoughts related info  * *  very uhHHH likely to change as i go / as i remember things more clearly if / when i subject myself to tlj again
i.  recovery   //    in the empire strikes back novelisation luke was in his bacta tank for 12 hours and then slept for another 16 hours for fatal hypothermia.  assuming bacta technology has advanced and become more sophisticated,  particularly because it’s now been synthesised into a suit,  i’d estimate finn’s recovery to have been in the 30-36 hour mark.  (   also, he’s force-sensitive but that’s A Whole Other Topic  !  )
if we assume:  day 1 post-tfa:  rey staying long enough to get her hot new Grey Jedi Look together  +  organise the gps bracelet plan with leia.  the resistance receiving alerts that the first order fleet is approaching and beginning evacuation plans.  day 2 post-tfa:  finn wakes up,  half a day earlier than he did in tlj,  just in time to offer information on the weak points of the star destroyers and the dreadnought, including helping devise the plan to eliminate the dreadnought’s surface cannons and clear the way for the resistance bombers.
ii.  allegiance   //   FINN OWES !! THE RESISTANCE !! NOTHING !!!!!!  HE DOESN’T OWE ANYBODY SHIT !!!!!!!  this boy has risked his life and livelihood time and again from the moment he chose not to kill for the first order for complete strangers,  for a movement he had no prior connections with.  even if leaving and becoming a  ‘’’’’’’ traitor ‘’’’’’ to the resistance had been right for his character and a valid development in his character arc,  he does not deserve to be called a deserter for wanting nothing to do with the first order ever again.  like........... does anybody fucking realise that alongside the very possible defeat of the resistance, finn being captured by the first order again probably means he wouldn’t be killed, but  reconditioned  ???????  the first order has had deserters, too !!   they also get tasered !  in the Head, specifically their Brain, where they’re basically restored to factory settings.  not to mention the sheer amount of bravery and courage and heroism it takes for him to turn around and face the organization that destroyed his childhood, enslaved him, and has systematically abused him every day of his life.
with all of that said,,,,,  it makes 0 sense for finn to decide, in the middle of the resistance evacuation, to suddenly up and leave with a shitty ass excuse about needing to be far away for when rey comes back.  like ??????  rey's path is already so deeply and inexorably tied to the rube goldberg machine that is the jedi, the resistance, and the skywalkers,  and finn knows this.  even if he wasn’t fundamentally a person with a moral compass that couldn’t be broken even by two decades of indoctrination into a fascist space nazi regime,  finn does The Things He Does because they’re the right thing to do.  his character arc is not and has never been defined by rey.  i don’t know what dinosaur sloth titty juice rian johnson’s been drinking but repeating parts of finn’s earlier character development to the point of regression is not !!! good !!!! writing !!!!!!!
given that he’s spent 36ish hours in a recovery coma,  finn hasn’t had so much as a Second to process,  or decide,  where he stands in the resistance.  like rey,  he too is looking for someone to show him his place in all this.  unlike rey,  he has no mentor figure, no introspective screentime alone,  no inner dialogue or space to explore who he is now in the post-first order part of his life.  but,  for the time being and given the time-sensitivity of the resistance evacuation,  he is absolutely on the side of the rebels.  these are the people who saved him and protected him,  who gave him the jacket off their backs and something to fight for.  not only does deserting make 0 logical or tactical sense in the middle of an evacuation,  it’s just outright selfish ??  and self-serving ???  none of which finn is, thank you @ryan johnson.
iii.  rebellion   //   so there’s been a lot of differing opinions on finn and rose’s storyline and after agonizing a lot of this i’ve come to the almost final decision that it’s Not As Bad as ppl want it to be.  like a lot of mischaracterisation fuck-ups in tlj,  it mainly comes down to  how this storyline was treated in the grand scheme of tlj and how significant it was to the overarching plot.  canto bight only seems irrelevant because ryan johnson is a terrible fucking writer who thrives off sidelining his characters of color.  thematically, it served it as a damning critique of the powerful ruling class and political economic elites that are actively profitting from the injustice and oppression of war.  rose showing those kids the resistance emblem in her ring is one of the most iconic moments in the film;  inspiring a whole generation of children to rise up against their oppressors is  everything the resistance symbolizes and fights for.
throwing in an unnecessary oc spitting some half-assed  ‘ everything isn’t always good or bad, sometimes there’s just grey areas ’  message in a parallel of the jedi story and ultimately having the undercover mission serve No Purpose Whatsoever was a shitty move.  in keeping with the fandom interpretation that tlj is a story about failure,  this would’ve been okay  only  if  the detour onto the star destroyer hadn’t been for absolutely nothing.  because there Needed to be fucking somETHINg,  instead of just benicio del toro rihanna.gif winking with the parting words that  ‘ hey sometimes people are just assholes ’.  star wars isn’t a story... about... people being fundamentally shitty..... it’s a story about good vs. bad and the enduring struggle for Balance between them;  People Are Both.  it doesn’t matter what you are but what you  do  and the choice you have to do good or bad.  to counteract the shittiness of dj fucking off,  leaving two poc to be forced onto their knees by a white fascist villain,  and a black character to be slapped upside the face by said white fascist villain we needed Something.  WHERE WAS OUR STORMTROOPER UPRISING, hMMMmm MMm MMMM mMM MM ????????????
bb-8 showing up as deus ex sight gag was funny for 2.5 seconds but now i'm just.... like crait.... a whole Salt Planet.  we could have had, it All ?  i don’t even specifically know where this part of my tlj-divergent verse goes because it actually requires other non-canon characters to exist but.... hey if any ex-stormtrooper oc’s wanna hmu.... u kno where i’m at.  basically,  i picture a handful of stormtroopers defecting,  escaping with rose and finn,  becoming part of  the rebellion that is reborn.
iv.  battle of crait   //   this... fuc king scene..... god.  let’s just get the wampa out of the way.  rose’s  ‘ that’s how we’re gonna win.  not fighting what we hate, saving what we love ’  was totally narratively undeserved.  this is not a criticism of the character but of ryan, again, the man who was paid millions of dollars to write this garbage.  in under 18 hours,,,, rose has decided that she has gotten over her lifelong hatred for the first order,  her very recent and fresh grief over losing her sister who died Fighting The First Order,  and oH,  she LOVES FINN ?  WHAT.  cool.  coolcoolcool.
in my canon, i’m going to go with the idea that rose did not kiss finn.  but they have a fantastic dynamic,  and rose crashing into him, saving him and saying something similar to what she said but more along the lines of not wanting to lose another person she cares about to the first order would have been much... better....  i view this ship as primarily platonic, at least far as tlj goes.  finnrey and finnpoe barely had any screentime / development so ryan johnson is flat-out playing no-homo games if he thinks he’s going to sail a ship based on 18 hours of knowing each other.  but i’m totally open to seeing where it goes with proper development, etc. in rp,  so if there are any rose’s that would like to plot with me and discuss finnrose stuff please !!!  i’m begging you !!!!
if ya made it to the end,  thank you,  ur the real mvp,  u are now obligated to message me to plot or yell at me abt ur own tlj salt / headcanons / character analysis.
