something that pisses me off in RA is that Flanagan will occasionally hype up Pauline as this super important and prominent figure in Will’s life, even treat her as a proxy for the mother he never knew, and yet will just refuse to show it beyond the like. two or three (personal) conversations that they have in canon. I get that he was attempting to make her an important person in Will’s life but why not do that by actually making her an important person in Will’s life
#hey Flanagan I hate to tell u but just because she’s married to Will’s father figure does not automatically make her his mom figure#what REALLY annoys me is how easy it would have been for him to connect her & will#like hey. if only there were a pretty clear gap in Will’s education that halt couldn’t fulfill - say for example mmmm diplomacy?#(cause we all know how gifted halt is at conflict resolution)#then he’d have a valid reason to seek out a master of diplomacy for lessons in negotiating compromises & treaties#but no I guess not. Will’s just naturally good at diplomacy despite never really being exposed to it#yk what extra sucks?#if Pauline HAD taught will about treaties & stuff then him receiving the last name treaty wouldve been 1000x more meaningful#it would’ve spoken to her influence on him and solidified her as a sort of parental figure in her own right#AND as an extra extra bonus: if she came to the cabin to teach will about negotiation tactics and such#then we could’ve gotten more halt/Pauline interactions. as in: we could’ve actually seen them being in love ON SCREEN instead of just being#told that they loved each other#will could’ve had a chance to see how much the two of them mean to each other. and then he would’ve had some actual basis for a speech#at their wedding or whatever#but yeah no why do that when we can just imply that will & Pauline got super close off screen? same effect right?????#ranger’s apprentice#pauline dulacy#halt o’carrick#will treaty#I love these books so so much don’t get me wrong. but there are just some things……#anyway.#jackie rambles

I feel like what hurts me most about Sparrow being all “I’m not proud of you” isn’t that he said it, cause I could already kinda guess that from the first scene.
It’s just that normal doesn’t seem to have had any inclination of it prior. Like, to him that’s just his dad being his dad. Not his dad trying to nudge him into being more normal.
And that’s exactly why Normal believes his dad hates him (at least in my mind). Cause as humans we are built to remember the bad as a way of survival, and normal probably can only think about the times he’s seen his dad cringe and how he’s so stupid for just thinking his dad was worried (even if he was worried and not in fact cringing.) like every memory gets corrupted with this new realization. When Teeny won the mascot contest was your dad actually smiling at how happy you were or was he just avoiding a scene, Did he actually enjoy watching those anime movies with you and hero when you were little or are you misremembering, was your uncle trying to warn you that you shouldn’t trust when your dad says he loves you, and so on and so on.

Very strange to me that the longer supernatural went on, the kinder it was to John Winchester and the uglier it made Chuck.
There’s something very. I don’t know. “Don’t blame your father, your father never did anything wrong. Blame God. Blame this thing that’s been secretly making your life worse this whole time, pulling the strings, controlling you and everyone around you.”
And the further we get into the show, the more Chuck becomes a Writer, rather than it being about God as a Father. (Never completely losing that aspect, obviously, just like Chuck was always a writer, but one of these parallels clearly superceded the other in terms of importance to the story.)

Also an oldie, but still a goodie.

I should try redrawing it sometime, I think there's a lot of parts I could improve (like the grass, emphasis on the "ass"), but hey, it is the obligatory "characters taking a nap together" doodle every fandom should have. Every fandom.

Zuko’s stealing habits: Additional observation
I have already talked about Zuko’s stealing habits in second Book and came to the conclusion that, narrative and visually speaking, he stole food and money primarily for Iroh’s sake. Even stealing the ostrich horse from the kind Earth family that fed Zuko and Iroh seen at the beginning of the season (something I did not include in the previous part) was done for pragmatic reasons rather than out of spite or for fun. As in, the ostrich horse gave them additional advantage to avoid or run away from pursuit. Iroh was not happy about Zuko’s choice but he ultimately accepted it and never again scorned his nephew for taking that animal - the later episode showed the ostrich horse was vital for their escape from Rough Rhinos.
Interestingly, Zuko wasn’t that much prone to stealing and/or appropriating someone’s property in the previous season either. Especially not for a petty reason. The three examples (or as close to stealing it could be) that comes to my mind happened in:
Avatar Return, when Zuko took Aang’s staff that the young airbender used in fight against him and then offered willingly as a token of his surrender in exchange for leaving Katara and Sokka’s people in peace.
Tumblr media
On his ship, the Banished Prince said:
This staff will make an excellent gift for my father.
What A) shows he didn’t think of keeping the last airbender’s weapon for himself and B) is a similar gesture done by Iroh, who sent little Zuko a knife of an Earth Kingdom's General that surrendered to him during the siege of Ba Sing Sai.
The Waterbender Scroll, during confrontation between captured Katara and Zuko:
Zuko: Tell me where he is and I won't hurt you or your brother. Katara: Go jump in the river! Zuko: Try to understand. I need to capture him to restore something I've lost, my honor. Perhaps in exchange I can restore something you've lost. Katara: My mother's necklace! How did you get that? Zuko: I didn't steal it, if that's what you're wondering. Tell me where he is.
And yes, Zuko did not steal the necklace, as Katara lost it when she helped imprisoned earthbenders to free themselves and Zuko found it in ruins of the workcamp. But he was willing to use it as a bargain chip and later, to track Aang with the help of June. From this episode he knew the necklace meant a great deal to Katara but for him it was a tool to fulfill his mission.
The Blue Spirit, we can assume Zuko, as the Blue Spirit, was infiltrating Fire Natin’s stronghold to steal information about Avatar and/or Zhao’s plans, as said knowledge was denied to the banished prince. And mind you, the first time we saw Blue Spirit at the fortress was long before Zhao’s people managed to capture Aang.
Tumblr media
During the first season, Zuko may not have a strong moral opposition to destroying other people’s villages or pursuing Aang from one end of the world to another, or keeping Katara’s necklace but in general he does not steal unless it is necessary. He does not even take trophies from defeated enemies and/or attacked villages (Water Tribe and Kyoshi Island were left immediately once Aang either surrender or escape) with the exception of Aang’s staff that Zuko wished to give his father, no doubt to earn his respect. Which is something fitting the theme of the second Book.
But the most ironic thing about Zuko’s stealing habits? Iroh’s reaction. Our dear uncle Iroh was not happy that his nephew has no problem stealing - and is stealing to either provide them food and comfort to the level Iroh was used to (book II) or to fulfill his mission of capturing Avatar (book I). I mean, that is a reaction we should expect from a responsible adult and the fatherly figure, right?  However in "Bato of the Water Tribe", Iroh himself was shown stealing perfumes while everyone was busy fighting

just because it smelled nice and there was no one to stop him. And from “Waterbender Scroll” episode we know Iroh had money to buy himself nice things on whim.
Tumblr media
But nope, stealing from people that he helped Zuko and June to attack is all right yet he will be upset that his nephew is desperately trying to please his father by capturing Avatar by any means AND Iroh, by providing him food and comfort the older man was used to.

Okay headcoanon that after the war its like meet the teacher night at gregor's school and obviously his parents cant make it, but gregor still has to go, so he visits lizzie and boots teachers and then has to go talk to his own teachers because he may as well hear what hes going to be doing the entire school year, especially if hes planning on skipping to go to the underland sometimes, and then he shows up and FUCKING ripred is there, chatting with all his teachers and he lights up when he sees gregor and wraps a protective arm around his shoulders and at first the teachers are a little hesitatant to talk to this fucking seven foot tall rat, but ripred clearly adores his son and is an intellejent being who asks good questions and at all times keeps a relaxed, but protective arm around gregor and the teachers are melting with cuteness and gregor is constantly a bright red, but has never felt more loved and at the ned of the night, without thinking, throws himself at the rat with a massive hug and ripred just smiles and hugs him back to his surprise and its the cutest thing ever and then he pulls away and is like, ‘wait, how did you know parent teacher night was today?’ and ripred just raises an eyebrow and is like ‘well im half of that equation so obvi i had to come.’ and before gregor can process that the rat taps him lightly on the shoulder and disappears. From then on, its ripred that shows up to school. Its ripred that comes to gregor's science fair. Its ripred that goes to the parent child basketball game and he and gregor destroy the competition but no one can really be mad because gregor is glowing and its been so long since their resident nice guy has smiled. And its ripred that comes to family movie night and ripred that goes to the talent show with his entire fucking merry little band of rats and they sit in the front row and you better believe they cheer so loudly when their pup plays his saxophone and gregor cannot stop smiling. Its ripred who comes to the school to pick gregor up when hes sick and his rager makes it unbearable, and ripred who takes him out for ice cream when he does good on a test. How the rat ever hears about the school events and when gregor is sick, he will never know. Father intuition i guess.

me 🤝 creating insanely unrealistic "what if?" situations, that put both Jon and Cat into precarious positions, in which Jon *needs* a mother and Cat has no choice but to fill that gap.

making a grant wilson animation to videotape by radiohead
like the song is literally so him??? like the whole “this is my way of saying goodbye, “cause i can’t do it face to face, so i’m talking to you before / no matter what happens now, you shouldn’t be afraid” is just so reflective of every time he’s tried to cut off someone close to him (scared to marry marco, even at the beginning when he talks to link by projecting himself outside his classroom like ahhhhh) he’s literally got so much going on i love him but also he lowkey needs therapy

skinamarink was really good but i wish we would've a) kept to the atmosphere & not done stupid youtube short jumpscares like that toy telephone thing. Seeing the eyes in the dark was good but the face turning evil and scary and screaming was lame sorry.
b) kept the parents as the main horror figures & not implied a third unknown horror thats like the devil or whatever. Your parents whispering weird incoherent sentences and telling you repeatedly to go from place to place and look at things for no clear reason and appear really creepy but its unclear whether they actually mean you harm but you don't want to disobey and find out was 100% better than "the devil is here and will make your blood splatter on the carpet."
c) just had kaylee disappear with no explanation. The fast close up shot where she has no eyes and mouth was cliché & just too revelatory. Okay theres something supernatural that wants to harm the children. Now that i know that im actually less tense than i was before. If on the other hand the scene had just been "a creepy voice that may or may not be your parents called your sister upstairs where its dark and scary and strange and now she's gone and you can't find her and you're all alone", thats horrifying on a level my adult mind can't make sense of.
d) 20-30 minutes shorter sorry some of those scenes were both too long and not very good there was a lot that could have been cut without sacrificing either atmosphere or intent and would have greatly improved the experience.
