i lost a very important paper lol. 🫠 can't find it anywhere. kind of freeing. i'm not in a position where i feel comfortable requesting another one and the precise level of importance is very very nebulous so the easiest thing to do now is to forget about it for the next week plus, which is good because i've got several other important things on the agenda.

The Babysitter (1)
Meeting The Maximoffs
Tumblr media
Wanda Maximoff X Reader
Summary: In need of money and a way to escape the problems at home, you get a job babysitting two lovely boys named Billy and Tommy Maximoff. What happens when you start to feel things you shouldn't for their mother? Will it bloom into love or leave you heartbroken?
The Babysitter Master list | General Master List
A/N- I would just like to say that there will be some sensitive issues in this story such as alcoholism, homophobia, anxiety as well as more mature content such as smut so, if you continue to read this, please consider this warning.
Meeting The Maximoffs
The sound of the bell rang around the room, Professor Stark in front of the first row, reminding everyone in the class to have completed the assignment by Monday before returning to his desk, fingers moving to type away at his keyboard, presumably writing an email about the assignment as people were flooding out of the door, his words falling on deaf ears. You made a mental note to complete the task before grabbing your backpack from the ground, quickly placing all your books and notes away before hurriedly leaving the room and the college campus.
The sound of directions filled your earphones as you looked down at your phone, the screen displaying a map with a blue line to lead you towards your destination of the house you were going to be babysitting at. Your gaze flickered between the screen and your surroundings as you stepped off the bus after thanking the driver, your mouth parting when you turned the corner your phone told you to. The street of houses here had you looking at them in awe, the area clearly wealthy judging by the houses that you felt should be referred to more as mansions.
Your feet carried you to the intended house, your hands nervously putting your phone away and fixing your outfit a little before ringing the bell of the large house. While waiting for someone to answer, your fingers fidgeted with one another as you were unsure of what to do.
Soon, the door swung open to reveal a tall blonde man with striking blue eyes dressed in professional attire, a soft smile that was definitely not genuine covering his face as he offered his hand out to you.
"You must be Y/n," you took his hand, shaking it briefly and trying not to grimace at his firm grip while nodding at his words.
"Yes, that's me sir," you say, noticing how he appreciated the formality, "You must be Mr Jarvis?" He nodded his head and moved to let you into the house, you follow behind him while your eyes scanned the hallway.
A smile took over your face at the sight of a photo of two young boys, both grinning ear to ear in the photo as they were dressed up in Halloween costumes, one in a sky-blue jumper with silver lightning bolts running across it, the other in a navy jumper and red cape flowing behind him. Your eyes flickered over to another photo this time of the two boys and a woman but before you could look any more at it you heard your name being called from another room.
"So," Mr Jarvis started, "I'm not sure how much you have discussed with my wife over the phone, so I'm going to cut to the chase and make sure we're both happy with everything." You sat opposite the man, listening attentively to what he was saying, a little shocked by his forwardness though. "You are to look after the twins, make sure they do any schoolwork, keep them entertained and feed them," the way he was speaking made you think it was something rehearsed, something he didn't actually care about but had to make sure was done, "Be in bed by nine if neither of us are home and that's pretty much it. It will most likely be Monday to Friday as my wife and I both work, and you will need to be on time as my work only lets me out to pick the boys up from school to bring them home. We'll pay you in cash afterwards."
"What time will I need to be here for you to go back to work?" you ask, praying that it fits with your class schedule.
"By four at the latest," he looks down at his watch, noting the time and standing to grab his suit jacket that was draped over the sofa. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to get back to work," your eyes widen at his words and follow after him.
"Wait, I'm starting now?" you practically blurt out, your nerves doubling every second he continues to get ready to leave the house.
"Yes," he answers shortly before walking to the bottom of the stairs and calling the twins down, "Tommy, Billy, come down here." The sounds of feet running down the stairs fill your ears as you see the two boys from the photo come into sight. "This is Y/n, your new babysitter so listen to her and behave," he ruffles both of their hair, one of them seeming to not like the action, before turning back to you. "Any issues, call or message Wanda," with that said he makes his way out of the house, the sound of the door shutting echoing inside your head.
At least you were good with kids... right?
With a nervous expression, you look at the boys who have smiles on their faces, pure excitement emitting from one of them, the other clearly more timid than his brother. You crouch down and give him a comforting smile, tilting your head to the side as you smile at the other.
"I'm Y/n," you offer the more confident brother your hand, his smaller one taking a hold of yours and shaking it a little too enthusiastically making you laugh.
"I'm Tommy," he says, teeth showing as he seems to like the idea of having a new babysitter. "This is my brother Billy," you give a soft smile to Billy who gives a small one back.
"Well, how about we have some fun now we've got the house to ourselves," your tone is playful, both of their eyes lighting up at your words.
"Can we be ninjas?" Tommy rushes out, your eyes widening once again. His brother laughs at your shocked and equally confused reaction.
"I..uh.. Sure, we can be ninjas if we want to," you chuckle out, "But after we play, we have to do our schoolwork." They both groan a little, but you raise your eyebrows at them, making them giggle at the fake serious look you were giving them.
An hour ago, if someone told you that you were about to play ninjas with two nine-year-olds you would have simply laughed in their face, now look at you. "Do you want to be a ninja too Billy? Or do you want to be someone else?" His face lights up at your question, your heart melting a little at his shyer nature.
"I can be something else?" He looks to his brother who is already doing karate moves in the air, your gaze following his and mouth tugging up into a smile. You nod at him and wait for him to think of something he wants to be. "Can I be an astronaut?"
"Of course you can," your tone is cheery, and you stand upright, mirroring the position Tommy was in. "So, we have a ninja and an astronaut, what's the first plan of action for tonight?"
"We have to sneak into the living room and defeat the bad guys!" Tommy exclaims, taking his role seriously and crouching down, slowly creeping towards the room. You copy him, watching as Billy also mirrors the action, and gradually make your way into the living room. You have to hold back your laughter when Tommy and Billy both check the corners of the other doors in the house before they leap into the living room. Billy doesn't fight as many bad guys as Tommy, the latter slicing his palm through the air and punching imaginary figures. "We did it!" he cheers, face beaming up at you as he goes to high five you.
"We did," Tommy looks proud of himself while you turn to his brother, "Now, I think it's time for a mini trip to space for our little astronaut over here."
Moving to the middle of the room, the boys either side of you, you bring your hand up to your mouth in the shape of a radio. "Pshhht, this is your captain speaking," chuckles fill the room with the voice you put on as well as the awful static noises you try to make. "Are we Psshhhht," another set of laughter, "Are we ready for take-off?"
"This is astronaut Billy saying he's ready," he says, eyes full of joy while he looks up at you. Tommy also says he's ready and you put your captain's voice again.
"Taking off in 10...9...8...7," the twins joining in with the countdown.
"6...5...4...3...2...1!" At the end of the countdown, you lift Billy off the ground, swaying your body around with him earning a squeal of surprise and excitement. You place him down after a little more flying through space, his brother pretending to steer the spaceship.
"And that concludes our space mission," they both pout a little, trying to make you guilty for ending the fun so soon.
"But we never flew back to earth," Tommy counters, you just shaking your head at them.
"If we all do our schoolwork then maybe we can fly to another planet then back to earth," you reason, the twins practically sprinting to go and get their homework. You sit with them at the table, pulling out your own work to do while they start theirs.
You want to say many, many things about the work Mr Stark gave you to do but refrain from saying them due to two little people sitting near you. Your pen scribbles word after word for your assignment, your gaze occasionally flickering over to the others to make sure they are doing their work and understand it.
"Y/n?" you hear Tommy say, "Can you help me with my maths question?"
"Of course I can," you move your chair so it's next to his, your eyes searching the paper for the question. You notice he's doing fractions and wish your work was like these fraction questions instead of an entire essay on science theories. After a few minutes of explaining, a flash of realisation and understanding washes over his face while he tries another question on his own.
The sound of the door opening catches your attention, your eyes checking your watch to see that it's just gone half five. You wait at the table with the boys who haven't seemed to notice someone's home until she walks in.
Your mouth parts slightly at the sight of the woman, no, the goddess that just walked into the room. A smile that could brighten any room, mesmerising green eyes that practically enchant you and auburn locks cascading down her back with a few framing her face adorns her perfect figure, your mind lost for words at the beauty of this woman. The boys rush over to her, hugging her and letting her lean down to press a small kiss to their foreheads before turning all of her attention to you. The expectant look on her face suggests she asked you a question, making you flush at the intensity of her gaze.
"Uh... pardon?" you say, embarrassed from being too captivated by her to listen. She simply smiles at you, nose scrunching at your nervous state.
"I said 'You must be Y/n, the new babysitter," there's a slight teasing in her tone as she repeats, "It's lovely to finally meet you face to face."
"You too, Mrs Jarvis," you awkwardly say, Tommy and Billy going off to watch Tv as they claim to have finished their work.
"I actually go by Miss Maximoff," she corrects politely, "And no need for formalities, call me Wanda, dear." The way her words have a slight accent to them has your face flushing even more, especially at the term of endearment. "I hope they behaved for you," she says, her head looking over her shoulder at her boys sitting on the sofa, engrossed with the cartoon currently playing.
"They were perfect for me Miss Ma-" Her eyes look over at you, eyebrow raised, "Uh Wanda." Your flustered state must have amused her as she let out an angelic laugh, your mind desperately wishing to hear that sound again. Your gaze travelled to the twins, your mind replaying the surprisingly fun afternoon you had. Stuck in the memory, you don't notice the way Wanda looks at you, an undecipherable glint in her eyes before her words break you out of your thoughts.
"Well thank you for taking such good care of them and somehow managing to get them to do their work," she jokes out, before reaching into her purse to find some cash to pay you. She offers you £50 and your eyes widen at how much she's giving you.
"That's way too much Wanda," you say in disbelief, you would have been happy with £10 never mind fifty. "I only looked after them for two hours," she shakes her head at you dismissively and takes a hold of your hands, placing the money there. You're too busy trying not to panic at the feeling of her hands on yours to stop her from pulling away.
"I can already tell they love you, so please take it," her eyes hopeful that you won't try and refuse once again. "Consider it a starting bonus," she argues, and you open your mouth in protest but close it almost immediately after as you can't think of anything to say to make her change her mind.
"Thank you," you say, looking up with an extremely grateful expression, "This really means a lot to me." You see the questioning look in her eyes and avert your gaze to your watch to see the time. "Um, I'll be going now if that's ok?" you move to the table to pack your books away, trying your hardest to ignore the feeling of her eyes on you.
"Yes, that's fine dear," when you turn you see a soft expression on her face and silently thank her for not pressing any further. "Billy, Tommy, say goodbye to Y/n," she calls, and the boys come rushing towards you with wide eyes.
"But we still have to go to another planet," Billy says, Tommy nodding his head along to what his brother says.
"And we need to get back to earth," Tommy adds, your heart clenching at the worried expressions on their faces. You look over to Wanda who just has a confused but entertained expression on her face. You move closer to them, Wanda even more intrigued by what was happening.
"Pshhht this is your captain speaking," they giggle at the static noise again, Wanda letting out a chuckle at your fake voice, your cheeks flushing as you look back at her. "Mission to Mars will happen on Monday, Pshhhht and mission back to Earth will happen afterwards," the worry washes from both of them at the promise of continuing the game before they rush over to hug your legs.
"Goodbye Y/n," they both say, then walking back to the sofa as you pull your backpack on and walk towards the door with Wanda close behind.
"Thank you once again for taking such good care of them," her voice is gentle as she holds the door open for you.
"It was honestly no problem, Wanda," you step out of the house, turning back to her before leaving properly, "They're amazing kids, you should be really proud of them." A small tint of pink covers her cheeks at your words
"Get home safely Y/n," her fingers brush a stray strand of hair behind her ear, "I'll see you Monday."
You watch as she shuts the door, a smile on her face, and start to walk down the drive, whispering a small 'See you on Monday' to yourself as your mind fills with thoughts of a certain woman.

The journey begins...
I hope you enjoyed :)

Hard Reset IV
Pairing: Joe Burrow x Reader
Warnings: 18+ / Smut
Description: This fic covers the week 5 lead-up and win against the Cardinals.
Time/Place: Monday, Oct. 2, 2023 - Sunday, Oct. 8, 2023 / Cincinnati, Ohio & Glendale, Arizona
A/N: This is the fourth fic in the Hard Reset series.
Since we have a secret wedding coming up in the next chapter, I decided to use the bye week lakehouse idea from my Sink or Swim fic for the honeymoon location. I'll copy & paste the relevant bit here in case you haven't read it or to refresh your memory:
~ ~ This took place just before training camp in mid-July ~ ~
"Remember when we went to that party at the lake last summer? There was that cool lakehouse that we drove by a couple times when we got lost looking for the party?"
You furrow your brow as you try to think back, your face lighting up when the memory clicks into place. "The tall, narrow three-story house with the rooftop deck?"
"Yep," he grins, opening a tab on his computer and swiveling it to show you the screen. "It's called 'The Crows' Nest' and it's an Airbnb."
"No way." You lean closer for a better look. "It's even more awesome than I remember."
"I booked it for three nights during our bye week."
"Shut up!" you squeal, slapping Joe's arm as he looks simultaneously stoked and smug.
"I hope three nights is enough," he says nervously. "I thought about doing four, but . . ."
"Three nights is plenty," you interject. "If I remember correctly, it's about an hour and a half drive. We'll have an amazing getaway and be back in plenty of time for you to prep for the 49ers game the following week."
"I love that you already know my schedule."
"Front, back, side to side, Mr. Burrow," you purr, giving him a saucy wink.
~ ~ ~
All of that set-up is because the upcoming lakehouse honeymoon is mentioned in this chapter, so let's get to it . . .
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Monday, 10/2/23
You wake up to an empty bed, a satisfied smile gracing your lips as you think about the toe-curling sex you had with your man the night before. You slip out of bed, checking the clock before heading into the bathroom to pee and wash your face.
You eventually walk down the hallway and check Joe's office before heading downstairs, a little surprised that he's nowhere to be found since it's still pretty early, your eyebrows rising when you see a note on the kitchen counter. You pick it up and read it out loud.
"Couldn't sleep so decided to head to the facility to get an early start on work-out - treatment - film. I'll be late getting home tonight since a group of us are watching MNF at Sam's. Love, Joe."
You toss the note down and get your coffee started, a little surprised he's skipping his standing video game session with his high school friends. They play almost every Monday for a few hours until Monday Night Football kicks off at 8:15 pm. Some weeks they play even longer, especially if the MNF match-up isn't very sexy. Usually the only reason he skips it during the season is if he's playing football on Monday (in which case they postpone it to Tuesday) or if he's in a stank mood because he played bad the day before.
Your mind flashes back to yesterday's 27-3 loss to the Titans. "Stank mood for sure," you mumble to yourself, yawning as you add a glug of creamer to your coffee before heading upstairs to your office.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Tuesday, 10/3/23
You wake up to an empty bed again, your brow furrowing as you go through your morning routine before heading down the hall to Joe's office, a smile curling your lips when you hear football noises coming from inside.
"Hey babe," you greet, dropping a kiss on his neck as he hits pause on the game film he's watching. "Hey," he echoes, swiveling his desk chair around to face you. "Sorry I got home so late last night."
"It's okay. Did y'all enjoy the game?" you ask, brushing your fingers through his messy hair a few times to try and tame his rampant bedhead.
"Not really," he grumbles. "We kinda half-ass watched it while talking about what we need to do to get better." He makes a pensive face before giving you a big grin. "Oh yeah, check this out," he says, grabbing his phone and pulling something up before handing it to you. The vid features Ja'Marr and Tee arm wrestling on Sam's kitchen island while several other guys holler encouragement. The vid cuts out just after Ja'Marr wins.
"Y'all got a little bored last night, huh?" you laugh, handing him his phone back.
"Well, it all started when Ja'Marr made a comment about Tee not being as fast as him, so Tee was like 'yeah, but I'm stronger' so of course they had to arm wrestle."
"Of course," you agree. "Was Tee mad when Ja'Marr beat him?"
"A little," Joe shrugs, "but then he was like 'whatever, at least my dick's bigger'."
"Please tell me there's not a dick measuring vid," you mutter.
He gives you a cheeky wink before scrolling his phone like he's looking for said vid.
"Joseph!" you swat his arm. "I don't want to see it!"
He laughs at your scandalized expression before setting his phone on his desk. "Relax, babe, there's no dick measuring vid. At least not on my phone."
"Y'all are too much," you giggle, rolling your eyes playfully. "Everything's a damn competition."
"Wanna know who won?" he asks.
"No!" you chirp, sticking your tongue out when he chortles at your obvious discomfort. "You want some breakfast?" you ask, changing the subject before he decides to give you the unwanted dick report.
"Nah, I'll just grab something at the facility." He checks the time before wrinkling his nose. "I better get going. Lot of stuff to do today."
You lean down and give him a kiss before heading for the door. "I'm gonna get a shower. Have a good day."
"You too," he says, giving you a smile before turning his attention back to his computer.
~ ~ ~
You head downstairs about thirty minutes later, narrowing your eyes as you see another note on the kitchen counter; you snatch it up and read it.
"I'll prob be late again tonight since we're talking about new offensive schemes (thank fuck!) Lots of film to watch & I'll just grab dinner at the facility with the guys. Call me if you need me. Love, Joe."
"Could have told me that to my face," you grump, chewing on your lip and trying not to get too aggravated; he always spends extra time at the facility when shit's going sideways, so this is nothing new. It feels a little weird, though. Like he's avoiding you for some reason. "Don't overthink it," you warn yourself. "He's struggling and trying to figure his shit out. Don't make it about you."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Wednesday, 10/4/23
"Okay, fuck this," you mutter as you once again wake up to an empty bed. You heard him come in last night but pretended to be asleep since you were tired, aggravated and didn't feel like talking, but you def feel like talking now.
You snatch your phone off the bedside table and hurry down the hall to make sure he's not in his office before heading downstairs, your eyes rolling when you spot another damn note on the counter; you heave a sigh as you start to read.
"Sorry I got home late again. Big day today installing the new offense! I'm feeling optimistic for a change. Hate to say it, but I'll be late again. Going to Sam's tonight for pizza and film watching. Love, Joe."
"Shit," you grumble as you set your phone on the kitchen counter. "Can't unleash hell on Mr. Feeling Optimistic," you mutter under your breath, trying and failing to push aside the uneasy feeling the situation's giving you. You roll your shoulders as you wait for your coffee to brew. "He hasn't technically done anything wrong," you state, still trying to convince yourself. "The last thing I want to do is make him feel bad for doing his job."
~ ~ ~
You spend the next several hours doing your (mostly) normal routine:
a harder than normal work-out to relieve some stress
a couple hours of work followed by a virtual meeting to tie up some loose ends on a work project
a few chores and then some errands including a final stop to grab some Kung Pao chicken from your fav family-owned restaurant before heading home
You change into slinky shorts and a t-shirt as soon as you get home before pouring a glass of wine and tucking into your spicy dinner.
An hour later you're tidying up the kitchen when your phone rings; your brow furrows as you check the display before answering. "Hey Sam. What's up?"
"Is Joe there?"
"No. I thought he was eating pizza and watching film tonight at your place."
"Umm, yeah, I left the gym a few minutes before him and we were supposed to meet at my house, but I got a low air pressure warning on one of my tires and stopped to air it up. First place I stopped was out of service so I had to go to another gas station. Took almost thirty extra minutes and when I got home he wasn't there. I tried calling him, but it went straight to voicemail. I waited an hour and tried calling again but the same thing happened."
"That's weird," you mutter, your pulse immediately picking up. "Hopefully he didn't have a wreck or something."
"Oh, I'm sure it's not that," Sam mumbles.
"Well, let me know if you hear from him."
"Okay, you too."
You end the call and immediately try Joe's phone, a knot forming in your stomach when it goes straight to voicemail. You open your fav traffic app and chew on your lip as you look for accidents in the area he was traveling. "Nothing," you mutter, feeling slightly better until another hour passes without hearing from him.
You try his phone again, your heart thudding in your chest when it goes straight to voicemail. "Where are you?" you whisper, pacing back and forth as you try to decide what to do.
You wait thirty more minutes and are just about to call the nearest emergency room -- after Sam texts you asking if you've heard from Joe yet -- when you hear the garage door open, a flood of relief washing over you when he ambles in the door looking slightly disheveled. The odd look on his face makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up; you decide to play it cool.
"Hey," you say, giving him a smile. "How was practice? Did y'all install the new offense?"
"Yeah. Still have a lot of work to do, but I think we're headed in the right direction."
"Good." Your eyes drop down to his long fingers fiddling with his wristbands before you recapture his gaze. "How was the pizza at Sam's?"
"Fine," he shrugs, looking at his feet. "Nothing special."
You feel a wave of nausea hit at his obvious lie. Please let me hold down this Kung Pao, you think to yourself before speaking. "Sam called me several hours ago asking if I knew where you were. He had to stop and air up a tire, and you weren't at his house when he got there. He tried calling you but your phone was off." The color drains from his face as you continue. "Then he texted me a few minutes ago asking if I ever heard from you, so I know you haven't been with him."
He shifts his weight from one foot to the other but doesn't speak.
"You wanna tell me why you just lied to my face?"
"It's not what you think," he mutters, his prominent Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he swallows hard.
The action draws your gaze down to his throat for a few seconds before it shifts back up to his face; you become very aware of his facial hair, a thought flashing through your mind that it's a damn shame you're mad at him since you love to feel his scruff against your skin.
A darker thought creeps into your head when you consider the fact that he just lied to you about being with Sam. Is someone else enjoying the feel of that scruff? you muse to yourself, your stomach turning at the thought of him cheating on you.
You spin around and sprint down the hallway, barely making it to the guest bathroom in time to slam the door and fling the toilet seat up before emptying the contents of your stomach into the bowl. You spit a few times as you gasp for breath, eventually flushing the toilet and walking on trembling legs to the sink to rinse your mouth a few times and splash water on your flushed face. You pat dry with a hand towel and open the door, rushing forward two steps before crashing into a large, immovable object. Joe wraps his hands around your upper arms to steady you, his expression hard to read as you wrench yourself out of his grasp and step back.
He heaves a sigh before speaking. "We were supposed to meet at Sam's, but when he didn't show up for like twenty minutes I decided to take a drive to clear my head. I couldn't get my thoughts to stop racing," he continues with a shrug. "Thinking about how bad I've been playing, wondering if the new offensive scheme will help. I just needed a distraction."
"What's her name?" you snap.
"Huh?"
"The distraction. What's her name?"
"It's not like that," he soothes, reaching for you as you step farther out of reach.
"Then how is it?" you challenge. "You were out of contact for several hours with your phone turned off. That's not just a drive to clear your fucking head!"
He hesitates for a second and you spin around and stride for the stairs, launching yourself up them two at a time before heading through the master bedroom and into the bathroom, quickly brushing your teeth before hurrying into your walk-in closet.
You wrangle a suitcase into the middle of the closet floor and start flinging clothes inside with the same vigor that Joe uses when spiking a football after scoring a tuddy. You punctuate each motion with a curse word, your entire body shaking.
Eventually you become aware of the fact that he's standing in the doorway watching you; you give him a glare before continuing to pack.
"This is just a huge misunderstanding," he states, fiddling with his wristbands like his life depends on it.
"Obvs," you sneer. "I clearly misunderstood the nature of this relationship. Who could blame me, though?" you ask, plowing ahead before he has a chance to interject. "You've never given me a reason not to trust you. Plus you've been oh so vulnerable with me lately -- worried I'm gonna leave you, desperate to hurry up and get secretly married to put your mind at ease." You swallow hard around the lump in your throat, grateful that you're too stunned to cry. If I start crying, I may never stop, you think to yourself.
You stop packing long enough to lock eyes with him. "Meanwhile you're out doing God knows what with God knows who and lying straight to my face about it."
"I can explain everything," he urges. "I'm just trying not to spoil a surprise I set up for you."
"Surprise! I'm a lying asshole!" you chirp, giving a derisive snort before a petty idea hits you. If he wants to watch me pack, let's give him something to see. You walk deeper into the closet and start easing short, slinky cocktail dresses off of their padded hangers, folding them delicately before laying them almost reverently in your suitcase. You pull open a few drawers on your lingerie chest and scoop out copious handfuls of lacy, barely-there wisps of fabric in the form of bras, panties, teddys, thigh-high stockings and a few other naughty confections, smirking at his worried expression as you place the items in your suitcase.
"Where are you going?" he asks.
"Where have you been?" you counter, crossing your arms in a defensive posture, your substantial engagement ring catching your eye when the overhead light glints off of it. "Oh … here … you can have this back," you mumble, sliding the ring off and handing it to him.
"What? No way!" he sputters, gently pushing your hand back toward you. "Jesus, I've fucked this up so bad it's not even funny," he grits out. "I seem to fuck everything up these days."
"Don't play the victim."
He takes a deep breath and stares at the ceiling for several seconds before looking at you. "Will you please put your ring back on? I promise I'm about to tell you everything you want to know, but I can't think straight when you're not wearing your ring."
Something in his tone -- a pleading vibe -- makes you do as he asks.
"Thank you," he rasps, clearing his throat before holding a hand out to you. "Let's go sit down and I'll explain everything."
You stare at his hand for several seconds before placing your hand in it, your eyebrows climbing upward when he lets out the breath he was holding. He's shook, you think to yourself, hoping he has a damn good explanation for lying to you.
He leads you to the sitting area in your bedroom, gesturing for you to sit in one armchair before dropping into the other, his fingers immediately fiddling with his wristbands as he starts to speak.
"Okay … so … you know the lakehouse we're going to during bye week?"
"Yeah," you answer, your mind conjuring up an image of the cool, modern three-story house that you've been looking forward to staying in ever since Joe booked it back before training camp started. Back then it was just going to be a quick getaway during bye week, but it's morphed into your (first) honeymoon destination since y'all are getting secretly married just before you leave for the lake.
"Remember when I showed you the pics on the Airbnb site and you said -- if you were doing the decorating -- you'd arrange the furniture different in the master bedroom?"
"Yeah," you answer, thinking about the master suite that takes up the entire top floor of the house; one of its coolest features is an oversized skylight situated just above a sitting area. You mentioned it would be cooler to position the bed under the skylight so you could look up at the night sky while lying in bed.
"Well, I got in touch with the homeowner, Mr. Thompson, and asked him if I could switch the sitting area and bed for our stay." Your eyes go wide as he continues. "I told him I'd handle it, I just needed someone to let me and Sam in."
"We're not going for two more weeks, though," you mumble suspiciously.
"True," he agrees, "and I figured I'd go Monday the 16th -- the day before we arrive for our stay -- but Mr. Thompson said I could go anytime since no one else is staying there between now and then."
"That's … interesting."
"Mmm-hmm. So Mr. Thompson gave me the caretaker's number so I could set up a time for me and Sam to move the furniture."
If this is a lie, it's elaborate as fuck, you think to yourself as Joe continues.
"Max, the caretaker, agreed to meet me today. It's about an hour and a half drive, and I had just enough time to get there when I said I'd be there, so I left without Sam."
"Did you try calling Sam before you left?"
"No. To be honest I was a little aggravated." He shrugs before continuing. "He knew I was antsy to get on the road, and I felt like he was drag-assing."
"So you turned your phone off to teach him a lesson?"
"Maybe," he grins, having the decency to look a little sheepish about it.
"QB1 behavior," you mutter. "By the way, you better send him a quick text to let him know you're alive."
He does your bidding, and your gaze is drawn to his sexy hands as he types the text; you squeeze your eyes shut as a thought hits you. "Since Sam didn't go, who helped you move the furniture?"
"Max plus a couple of guys he brought with him. That king-sized bed is heavy as fuck so I was grateful he brought some extra muscle." He sees your skeptical expression and starts scrolling through his phone. "I'll show you the texts where we set it up," he offers, turning his phone where you can read it. "Here's the text from Mr. Thompson giving me Max's number. -- And here's where I texted Max to set up a time to meet. -- And here's his reply …"
You feel a flood of relief as you read the texts, your eyes meeting Joe's over the top of the phone for a split second before you break down crying; you drop your head into your hands as the sobs escalate, his concerned voice seemingly coming from a great distance even though his mouth is close to your ear.
"I can have Max send me footage from the security cams," he states. "The entire outer perimeter is covered so you'll be able to see me drive up and meet him and the other guys."
"That's not necessary," you wheeze, trying hard to draw breath and stem the steady flow of tears. "I believe you."
"Then why are you crying?" he asks, a slight tremble in his voice giving away his raw emotional state.
"Because I'm so relieved," you sniff, wiping your eyes before meeting his gaze. "I thought you were cheating on meeeee," you wail, your voice trailing off into sobs again as he stands up and scoops you up bridal-style; he drops into your chair with you sitting crossways in his lap, his deep voice like a balm to your frazzled nerves as he does his best to soothe you.
"I'm so sorry, baby," he whispers. "I would never cheat on you, okay? I was trying to set up a fun surprise for you, but I'm too much of a dumbass to get it right."
"You're not a dumbass," you sniffle, smiling as he wipes your tears away before dropping a kiss on each of your flushed cheeks. "It's not your fault that one of Sam's tires needed air."
"Yeah, this is all Sam's fault, the fucker," he grumbles, laughing along with you for a minute before turning serious. "You're shaking really bad," he states, running his hands up and down your arms. "Are you cold?"
"A little, but I think it's mostly a st…stress reaction," you stammer."
"Shit," he sighs. "I can't believe I did this to you."
"It's okay," you whisper. "You didn't mean to."
He drops a kiss on your forehead before standing up and setting you back in the chair, quickly grabbing a plush throw blanket off the foot of the bed and tucking it around you. "Sit tight for a sec. I'm gonna run a hot bath."
You nod your head as he turns and heads toward the bathroom, taking several slow, deep breaths to try and relax before he reappears. "Bath's ready," he states, gently pulling the blanket off of you before picking you up to carry you to the bathroom.
Five minutes later you're both immersed in the oversized tub, with him behind you and your back leaning against his chest. He runs his big hands up and down your arms, trying to chase away the chill bumps as you flutter your eyes closed and try to relax.
You spend the next fifteen minutes enjoying the feel of him rubbing your arms, your shoulders, and your thighs. "That feels good," you groan, the tension leaving your body with every stroke of his talented hands.
"Good." He drops a kiss on your neck. "Just relax."
"Sorry your surprise got ruined," you sigh, leaning your head to the side as he drops another kiss on your neck. "I think it's super sweet you went to so much trouble to surprise me," you continue, reaching a hand down to squeeze one of his thighs. "Can't wait to sleep with you under that huge skylight."
"It's gonna be amazing," he murmurs, his hot breath and scruff against your ear causing a shiver to run through you. "Still cold?" he asks. "No," you whisper, maneuvering around until you're facing him. His gaze is drawn down to your bare breasts just visible above the water. "You sure you're not cold?" he asks again. "You're chill bumpy, shivery, and … this," he breathes, ghosting his hot, wet fingers over your hard nipples, his eyes meeting yours when you give a soft moan and lean into his touch. "I'm the opposite of cold," you admit, gasping when he wraps his hands around your waist and slides you onto his lap, his mouth immediately capturing yours in a slow-burn kiss. His tongue tangles with yours for several minutes before he pulls back. "Let's go to bed," he orders, helping you out of the tub before stepping out behind you.
You quickly dry off and head into the bedroom, folding the covers down to the foot of the bed as your entire body hums with anticipation. "Y/n?" Joe calls from the bathroom. "Come here, please."
You walk back in the bathroom, an inquisitive look on your face as he gestures toward the open closet door; you turn your head to see what he's pointing at, a hot flush rising in your cheeks at the sight of your suitcase overflowing with lingerie. The sound of his voice pulls your attention back to him.
"Who were you gonna wear all that stuff for?" he asks, the edge in his tone sending a shiver down your spine.
"Nobody," you shrug, closing the distance between you and tilting your head up to look at him. "I thought you were cheating on me so I decided to make you a little jealous."
"A little jealous?" he snorts. "Just the thought of another man looking at you makes me insanely jealous." He wraps his hands around your waist as he continues. "The thought of another man touching you makes me homicidal."
"You threatening to kill me?" you tease, trying to lighten the mood.
"No, I'm threatening to kill him," he states matter-of-factly.
"You have nothing to worry about as long as you don't cheat on me."
"Promise?" he asks, the hint of vulnerability in his tone a complete contrast to the possessive anger of a few seconds ago. You wrap a hand behind his nape and pull him down until his face is about an inch from yours. "I promise," you whisper, pressing a kiss on his full lips. "You're the only man I want."
He pulls back and stares down at you, his demeanor shifting from vulnerable back to possessive. Provocative. You lick your lips as his hands tighten on your waist, opening your mouth to speak just as his mouth crashes down on yours. The kiss is intense, no teasing just taking, his need to possess you crystal clear as he slides his hands down to your ass and lifts you up, carrying you to bed while stating his intentions.
"I'm gonna lick you until you beg for my cock," he growls, the vibration of his deep voice in your ear causing a flood of liquid heat in your core. "Then I'm gonna fuck you senseless."
You're so drunk with lust that you can't form a coherent response. Instead you shove a hand in his hair as he eases you onto the bed, his eyes capturing yours for a few breathless seconds before he maneuvers his way down your body to make good on his carnal promise.
The next hour passes by like a fever dream, with him devouring you with a ferocity that has your body responding in kind, meeting his intense need with your own as you lose yourself in the feel of his hands and mouth on you, the hot velvet caress of his tongue bringing you to climax twice before he sinks his thick cock inside your tight heat. He rides you hard as he nips and sucks your neck and breasts, leaving love bites as you rake your fingernails up his muscular back, his first climax hitting just before your third.
He eventually pulls out and rolls off of you with a primal groan, your mutual heavy breathing the only sound for the next several minutes before you turn your head and give him a smile. "That was amazing," you pant, your eyes going wide as he rolls you onto your stomach.
"I'm not finished with you yet," he purrs in your ear, crawling between your spread thighs and biting the nape of your neck as he enters you from behind.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Thursday, 10/5/23
You wake up before Joe the next morning, stretching your deliciously sore, nude body beneath the slinky sheets before turning to look at him; he's sleeping peacefully, his pretty pink lips showing a hint of a smile as if he's enjoying a nice dream.
Last night felt like a dream, you think to yourself as you ease out of bed and head to the bathroom. The stomach-turning angst when you thought he was cheating, followed by intense relief and mind-blowing sex, was enough to give you an insane case of emotional whiplash.
"Crazy shit," you mumble to yourself, shaking your head at your reflection before turning on the faucet to wash your face.
You're patting your face dry when Joe walks in, giving you a smile before yawning and raking his long fingers through his messy hair. "Good morning, gorgeous," he greets as he walks up behind you, leaning down to press a kiss on your shoulder before meeting your eyes in the mirror.
"Good morning, gorgeous," you echo, biting your lip as the heat radiating off of his nude body causes your core to contract. Jesus, I'll never get enough of him, you think to yourself. "I'm gonna have to wear a turtleneck for my virtual meeting today," you state, pointing at the mark on your neck.
"Did I get a little overzealous marking my territory last night?" he asks, dropping a kiss on the love bite, the tip of his tongue darting out to give it a quick lick.
"Just the right amount of zealous," you giggle, watching his expression in the mirror as he notices the marks on your breasts.
"Do they hurt?" he murmurs, sliding his fingertips over the love bites plus the rug burn caused by his scruff.
"No," you breathe. "They just feel a little warm and tingly."
"That's good."
"Mmm-hmm," you hum, mesmerized by the sight of his big, strong hands delicately caressing your breasts, a gasp escaping your lips when he ghosts his fingertips over your hard nipples.
"Are you sore?" he asks, his voice husky with arousal as he slides a hand down to cup your mound, his erection thickening and lengthening against you.
"A little," you admit, "but it's a good kind of sore."
"Stop me if it's too much, okay?"
"Okay."
You both watch in the mirror as he dips one long finger inside your slick heat before pulling it back out, spreading the moisture over your sensitive folds as you grind back against him; he repeats the sensual action several times, his eyes dark with arousal as you bend over and press your forearms against the marble counter, rising up onto your tiptoes as he continues to tease you.
You arch your back in invitation as he lazily circles your swollen clit with slippery fingers. "I need you inside me," you whisper, your pulse picking up as he grabs his erection with his free hand and nestles the tip against your entrance; he meets your eyes in the mirror before slowly pushing inside, hissing in pleasure as your walls clench around him.
"I'll never get enough of you," he growls as he starts to thrust.
~ ~ ~
An hour and a half later -- after a couple of orgasms, a shared shower and a quick breakfast -- you give him a kiss before he heads for the door.
"I'll be home for dinner," he calls over his shoulder.
Your mouth drops open in exaggerated surprise. "No way!" you tease. "I was starting to think we'd never have dinner together again."
He spins around and walks back to you, cradling your face in his hands before speaking. "I know I've been gone a lot this week, but trying to figure shit out plus installing the new offense has been pretty intense."
"Not to mention sneaking off to upgrade our secret honeymoon love nest."
"That too," he chuckles, leaning down to press a kiss on your lips. "I can't wait for the bye week."
"Me neither," you purr, giving his plump butt a squeeze before he heads for the door.
~ ~ ~
Later that night -- after dinner, a couple episodes of Forensic Files, and some less-intense-but-no-less-satisfying sex -- y'all are lying in bed talking about the upcoming game in Arizona.
"If we lose," Joe says, making a face at the awful thought. "I only want to see you in the family & friends area after the game. My parents can wait for you outside, then y'all can ride to the airport together."
"Can't do that, babe."
"Why not?"
"Because your mom will get her feelings hurt. She's already a little upset that you're not meeting us after losses, but if you meet me and not them, she's gonna be seriously upset."
"Then she shouldn't be so extra with the praise every time I lose. It's fucking annoying."
"You're her baby," you soothe, pressing a kiss on his pouty lips. "She's always gonna try to make you feel better."
"If I play like shit, I don't want to feel better."
You sigh at the grumpy look on his pretty face. "Tell you what. If she starts in on the praise, I'll step in and gently shut it down."
"Really?" he asks, giving you a skeptical look.
"Really," you answer. "I'll just steer the convo in a different direction. I've done it a few times with her, and it's worked pretty well."
"You do have the magic touch when it comes to handling her like that. You're way better than me at it."
"Because I use a little finesse instead of coming at her like a wrecking ball," you tease.
"I have no patience for finesse when I'm pissed off."
"I know," you chuckle. "That's what you have me for."
He rolls onto his side and pulls you against him, your back to his chest. "We make a good team," he states, dropping a kiss on your shoulder.
"The best," you agree.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Sunday, 10/8/23
You stand against the wall in the large room designated for family & friends of the visiting team at State Farm stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the thrill of victory putting a huge smile on your face as you wait for Joe to appear.
The game had been the Joe & Ja'Marr show, with Joe throwing for 317 yards, and Ja'Marr catching 15 passes for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns. The almost-telepathic connection between the two of them was on full display as they led the Bengals to a 34-20 win over the Cardinals.
An excited buzz flows through the room as Joe walks in; he ignores the attention as he quickly strides up to you. "Hey," he greets you, leaning down to drop a kiss on your lips before pulling you into a tight hug. "Hey," you breathe against his sweaty neck, tempted to lick him but restraining yourself due to the crowd of people watching you, including his parents.
There's a wicked grin on his face when he steps back, like he read your mind. Speaking of telepathic, you think to yourself, giving him a discreet wink as his parents step forward to greet him.
A minute later he turns his attention back to you, leaning down to press his lips close to your ear. "See you at home," he whispers, the four words so full of heat that you feel a blush rise in your cheeks as he turns and heads for the door.
~ ~ ~
A little while later, as you're sitting in the airport waiting to catch your flight home, your phone rings. Your pulse picks up when you see who's calling.
"Hey gorgeous," you greet.
"Hey gorgeous," Joe responds. "Are my parents right there?"
"No. They went to find a bathroom before we board."
"You need to get some sleep on the plane," he says, his voice dropping an octave like it always does when he's thinking naughty thoughts. "I've got plans for you when I get home."
"Can't wait," you purr before a thought hits you. "Your parents are spending the night, so we'll have to be somewhat quiet."
"So we'll have mind-blowing, hair-pulling, screaming-orgasm sex minus the screaming."
"Sounds good," you whisper, your eyes going wide when you see Joe's parents headed your way. "Your parents are back."
"I can't wait to see you."
"Me too," you mutter, smiling at Robin as she sits beside you.
"Can't wait to get you naked," Joe growls. "I'm gonna …"
You loudly clear your throat when you notice Robin looking at you. "I better go; we're about to start boarding."
Joe's dirty chuckle brings a hot blush to your cheeks. "Love you, babe," he states.
"Love you, too," you whisper before ending the call.
"You look a little flushed," Robin says, pressing a hand against your forehead. "Do you think you're coming down with something?"
Just the hots for your sex god son, you think to yourself, giving her a smile before answering. "I feel fine. I think the excitement of the win is just now catching up with me."
"That's probably it," she agrees. "Nothing a good night's sleep won't cure."
"Definitely."
"Speaking of that," she continues. "Since we're getting back so late, let's push brunch tomorrow back a couple hours. That way you kids can get plenty of sleep. Does that sound good?"
"Yes, ma'am," you agree. "I know Joe is gonna be super tired when he gets home."
"For sure," she nods. "He'll be so tired he can barely walk."
He'll be even more tired when I get through with him, you think to yourself, standing up and grabbing your bag when they call your flight.

Pairing: Kendall Roy (Succession) x F! Reader
Rating: Explicit
Word Count: 1.7k
Author's Note: I'm so excited that we'll have new Kendall Succession content soon! Thank you so much for this request, I think being Kendall's trophy wife would be a whole ass job but so worth it 😅 Also writing about leaving a shitty job felt very cathartic as I am going through something similar at the moment, so I am very grateful for this request, obsessed with your description of throwing your feminist card away for this, and apologies for all the projecting!💓

Two Weeks Notice (Kendall Roy Smut)
You were good at your job. Great in fact. No matter what your 1,000-year old boss said when he forgot his password and blamed it on you. No matter how many times you were ahead of schedule on a project and then the deadline got moved. No matter how many times you had to lock yourself in a bathroom stall just to take a few deep breaths alone so you weren't crying at your desk. You were good at your job. But was it worth it?
You'd worked hard to rise through your industry until you started to really see the benefits of being close to the top, but the heavy responsibilities and long nights and constant demands had started taking a toll right around the time you met Kendall. Kendall whose job was somehow even more demanding than yours, and who needed all the support you could offer him every waking moment, clinging to your kindness like it was the first he was ever shown. It was easy to see Kendall was smitten from the first day, never hiding his efforts to spend time with you, showering you with gifts and invitations to be on his arm at what seemed like every major event in the world. It was exhausting balancing late night galas with your job, and trying to be there for Kendall when his family got too much and he needed to retreat to the safe harbour of your arms. You could feel yourself getting more and more worn out as your relationship developed, with Kendall always offering to sit out events for a quiet night in, despite how much you both loved the excuse to don a designer dress and spend the night laughing together, hand locked in his no matter what.
You didn't wake up until a least your third alarm that Monday, the bright light trickling through a gap in the long velvet curtains making you wish you could hide under the duvet forever.
"Is that your alarm babe? You can't seriously have to be up for work already?" Groaned Kendall beside you, reaching out to wrap his arm over your stomach, covered only by a t-shirt he'd loaned you on your first sleepover and never got back, as he silenced the beeping beside you.
"I can lie here for five more minutes and then I've got to get ready." You sighed wearily, setting the deadline for yourself, ignoring the cloud of dread hanging over you at the thought of another day in that awful office.
"Just don't go, you hate it there, and you always come home bummed out afterwards. Just stay in bed with me forever." Kendall argued, rising up on his elbows and shifting until his face hovered an inch from yours, soft smile breaking down your defenses with lightning speed.
"I can't just not go Kendall, it's my job." You sighed, gracing him with a soft kiss before gathering all your strength to drag yourself out from under his slim build.
"You don't need a job gorgeous, especially not a job you don't like. You should quit and then we'd get to spend more time together." You couldn't help but laugh at his suggestion, until you focused on his face again, completely serious about his proposal.
"Kendall I can't just quit and hang out with you all day." You could feel your heart sink at your own words, the option presented to you so much more enticing than the day you had ahead of you. As you moved to sit up Kendall let his weight keep you in place, shaking his head at your attempted escape.
"Hey I still have four minutes left to make my case!" His voice was hoarse first thing in the morning and as his lips fell to yours again you could feel your resolve softening,
"Okay, you can try and convince me." You let your head fall back against the pillow as Kendall shifted his body completely over yours, lips gently marking a journey over your throat as he spoke,
"First, most people have a job to make money, and you don't ever need to worry about money again because we have more than enough together." His kisses trailed down towards your shoulder, feeling the subtle shift of your hips under him as your eyes fluttered shut at the sensation. "Also, I miss you when you're at work, and that's no fun for me." You missed the playful glint in his eye as he spoke, softly landing one hand on your thigh and rubbing small circles across the sensitive skin with his fingertips as they climbed.
"Kendall, I - " You thought about protesting, but his lips cut you off as you spoke, continuing his thoughtful plea,
"Number three, the idiots you work with don't respect you. But I respect every part of you, and every one of your needs." His warm palm pressed into your thigh, shifting your legs apart slightly, smiling with devilish glee as you let him do it. "Working there makes you unhappy, and you should never have to do anything that makes you feel bad. I only ever want you to feel good." You could feel your excitement building with anticipation as his hand slowly climbed towards your centre, body twitching against his as his fingers brushed over the soft fabric of your underwear. Dipping his head to your stomach, his hands tugged at the worn shirt until it was bunched up at your shoulders, your chest exposed for his trailing lips to explore as he spoke,
"We have a lot more fun here than you do at work right?" He asked teasingly as his fingers toyed with the hem of your panties, drinking in your breathy sigh as you nodded and hummed in agreement, lifting your hips to help him remove the barrier stopping him from accessing all of you.
"Good girl," he cooed as his fingers traced over your slit, moving teasingly slowly as his lips peppered your chest with kisses, tongue darting over your nipples until they hardened at his touch.
"You're also way too sexy to have an office job, you should let someone who couldn't just lie in bed naked all day have your job, as like, a public service." You could feel him grin against your skin as he spoke, easing his fingers between your folds and feeling your warm slick welcome him.
"Mmm, see, it's not fair for you to ever leave me here alone when you're clearly made for me to touch." You watched through hooded eyes as he withdrew his fingers slowly and brought them to his lips, "and taste," he added before dropping his hand back to your entrance, pumping his hand between your thighs and feeling your chest rise and fall against his hungry lips.
"Kendall, please." You sighed out at his gentle touch, needing more as frustration began to build in your aching core.
"Final reason, number I lost fucking count because there are so many reasons - I need you too much. I need you every morning, and every night, and every bullshit event, and every good day and every bad day okay? I need you all the time." The burning intensity in his gaze as he spoke had you squirming at his touch, the pounding of your heart echoing in your swimming head as he kissed a path down over your stomach, face hovering just above where you craved him most. His hand stilled against your dripping slit, breath teasingly close to your tingling clit. "So should I stop and let you go to work? Or do you want to stay here with me?" A smug smile spread across his face as you replied, almost begging,
"I'll stay Kendall, please!" Satisfied with your answer his fingers dipped inside you again, faster this time, brushing against your walls as his tongue lapped at your neglected clit, quickly building the pressure inside again.
"You're going to quit your job?" He almost commanded the question, rewarding each nod of your head with a wet kiss on your sensitive bud.
"You're going to let me take care of you?" You could feel the brush of his cheek on your inner thigh as he smiled at the question, your 'yes' coming out as a moan as you felt yourself grow closer and closer to release, the excitement in your core bubbling up to its boiling point.
"You're going to be my gorgeous, loving, trophy wife?" His eyes seemed to sparkle at the word wife, full of warmth and hope with the thought of having you by his side for the rest of his life.
"Yes Kendall!" Your voice caught on his name as your thighs began to shake, his tongue frantically lapping at your clit at the pressure inside you finally snapped, clenching down on his fingers and trembling under him.
"Good girl." He purred as he coaxed every drop of pleasure out of you, fingers working until your soft form finally stilled, hands finding his face and pulling him into a hungry kiss. Wrapping your arms over his neck you pulled him tight against your lips, letting your tongue drink in your own taste, body on fire with sensitivity after your start to the day. Finally you let your brain catch up with the agreement you'd made in exchange for pleasure, interrupting Kendall's eager kisses with a reminder of reality,
"I still have to give two weeks notice." You sighed, laughing as Kendall shook his head vigorously at the suggestion,
"No way, I'll just hire a model to pretend to be you at the office for the next two weeks. Done, problem solved," looking very proud of himself at the suggestion.
"Why a model?" You laughed, realising you weren't getting out of this bed for any reason today if Kendall was getting his way.
"Fuck off, have you seen you?!" He grinned at your flattered smile as you pulled his lips back against yours, only to feel his hands start wandering again, "Actually, I could do with seeing even more of you."
It's safe to say anytime you thought about getting a job outside of supportingt Kendall, he would remind you exactly why you agreed to be his, full-time.

"Adam, come on." Luca sighed as he leaned his head back in annoyance. "She's two, she can't survive on her own and you can't take her to every practice, or game."
Adam sat on the couch of his brand-new apartment as he listened to his brother trying to convince him to get him a nanny. He's been trying ever since the move and he understood why but he wasn't sure he was ready. "People are weird these days, Luca, I'm not gonna just hire someone off the street-"
"Adam, there are websites, background checks and so much more. You're not gonna hire some random person to take of her, I get it, but what do you expect?"
Adam, torn between his protective instincts and the practicality of the situation, sighed. "I know, Luca, I just… I've never been comfortable with the idea of strangers around Paloma. She's my everything."
Luca leaned forward, his voice gentle but firm. "Look, I get it, man. But we can't do this alone. You've got a career to focus on, and I've got my own life to manage, I can't be driving up here everyday and mom and dad have their work. We both love her, but we can't be with her 24/7."
Adam ran a hand through his hair, feeling the weight of responsibility settling on his shoulders. He knew Luca was right, Paloma was his top priority, and his hockey career demanded a lot of his time. It was his dream but he had to make sacrifices sometimes.
"I know, I know. It's just… What if something happens? What if the nanny isn't right for her?" He's heard the stories of those crazy nannies who abuse their power and doesn't even know what he'd do if anything like that happened to Paloma.
Luca put a reassuring hand on his brother's shoulder. "We'll find someone who's perfect for her, someone we can trust. And we'll be there to oversee everything. Paloma deserves a chance to socialize, learn, and grow."
Adam nodded, the corners of his lips lifting slightly as he scoffed playfully. "You always know how to talk me into things, Luca."
Luca grinned happily. "That's what brothers are for, right?"
Adam glanced at his draft photo on the wall, picture of him holding Paloma in his arms, both of them wearing matching smiles on the second best day of his life. It was a simple reminder that Paloma's happiness and well-being were his top priorities. And the more he thought about it he realized that maybe, just maybe, he could find someone who would fit perfectly into their little family.
"Alright, Luca. Let's start looking for a nanny."

The air was warm and the scent of flowers filled the outside area of the Cafe Adam had chosen to meet with the new nanny one of his new teammates had told him about. She was around his age, maybe a bit younger, and was currently a student at Ohio State. She seemed like an ideal fit, with a schedule that matched Adam's needs—available Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, perfect for morning practices. She also had many positive reviews from previous employers.
Seated outside, Luca observed his brother, who repeatedly checked his phone. Luca couldn't help but let out a soft sigh. "What?"
"She's late," Adam replied, his anxiety evident. He was usually laid back but right now, Luca could tell he was nervous.
"Since when do you care about punctuality? And it's rush hour, she's probably stuck in traffic." Luca replied as he tried to calm the boy down. She was the fifth nanny they'd met with in the span of a few weeks and he still hasn't found a match. Practice was going to start next week and this girl just had to be the right fit or he wouldn't know what else to do.
Adam tried to calm his nerves, playing with his keychain to try and calm his nerves. "Yeah, you're probably right. I just want this to work out, you know? Paloma deserves the best."
With an encouraging smile, Luca affirmed, "And she'll get it, Adam. We'll find the perfect fit for her, someone who'll love her like we do."
Adam nodded, appreciating his brother's reassuring words. He knew Luca was right; they would eventually find the perfect caregiver for Paloma, someone who would care for her as if she were their own.
Just as Adam was about to voice his concerns about the potential nanny's tardiness again, the cafe's entrance door chimed, and a young woman stepped inside. She scanned the outdoor seating area, her gaze locking onto the table where Adam and Luca sat. With a friendly smile, she approached them, her demeanor friendly and sweet.
She was pretty; that was the first thing Adam thought as he looked at her. She had a backpack on and it was obvious she had just come from a lecture, she looked the tiniest bit of tired but Adam thought that made her somewhat more attractive.
"Adam, Luca?" she inquired, her voice warm and welcoming. "I'm so sorry for being a little late, I got stuck in traffic on the way here."
Adam couldn't deny that Cece had a certain charm about her, and he appreciated her honesty. "No worries, Cece," he replied, offering her a warm smile. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Adam, and this is my brother, Luca."
Luca also greeted her with a friendly nod and smile. "Good to meet you, Cece."
Cece settled into the chair across from them, her backpack placed beside her. She seemed at ease, and her friendly demeanor put Adam's initial concerns to rest. It was important that the person they chose to care for Paloma was not only qualified but also someone she could feel comfortable around. The fact that Cece had come straight from a lecture also signaled to Adam that she was hardworking, which he appreciated.
"So, you go to Ohio State?" Luca mumbled playfully as he looked down at his Michigan sweatshirt. Cece let out a soft laugh at that and nodded.
"Yup, buckeye through and through." Cece faked a southern accent which made them both let out a soft chuckle, "Well not really. My entire family has went to Michigan, I'm the first to break the tradition."
As the conversation flowed, Adam couldn't help but steer it towards the topic that mattered most to him—Paloma. He had to know if Cece could connect with his daughter. With a warm smile, he began, "So, Cece, have you worked with toddlers before?"
Cece nodded, "Yeah I have. I worked with a toddler last year but they moved. I also have a little brother and some nieces and nephews.” A smile engulfed her face as she mentioned her family and Adam couldn’t help but be drawn to her genuine warmth.
"That's wonderful," Adam replied, his own smile growing. "Family means everything to us, and Paloma is like our little princess."
Luca chimed in, "She's a sweet kid, but she's been through a lot. We want to make sure she's comfortable with whoever takes care of her." Adam couldn’t help but stiffen at the mention of their hardships. He looked down at the table.
Cece sensed the change in the atmosphere as soon as Luca mentioned Paloma's hardships. She couldn’t help but wonder exactly what those were but she wasn’t going to ask anytime soon, it was obvious the wound was still fresh.
"I understand," she said softly, her voice filled with empathy. "Paloma's comfort and happiness will be my top priorities. I'll do my best to create a safe and loving environment for her, so she can heal and thrive."
Adam, still struggling with the memories of the past year, nodded slowly. It was difficult for him to open up about their challenging journey and even Luca still didn’t know the entire story with him and his ex.
Luca placed a reassuring hand on Adam's shoulder, silently letting him know that they were in this together, and that Cece might just be the right person to help them move forward as a family.
Adam leaned forward, "That's what we want, someone who can give her love and security. She's the most important thing in my life." Cece could tell how much Adam loves Paloma and she admired that. Her gaze softened as he spoke, it was so heartwarming seeing a father so involved with his daughter.
Cece met Adam's gaze with sincerity. "I promise you, Adam, Luca, I'll put my heart into making sure Paloma feels loved and safe."
In that moment, as they discussed their shared commitment to Paloma's well-being, Adam felt a sense of hope he hadn't felt in a long time. Cece's warm and genuine personality made him believe that they might have found the perfect person to care for his daughter. Sure, it’d take a while for her to fully gain his trust, (if ever), but he had hope for them.
As their conversation came to a close, Cece, still smiling warmly, glanced at her phone. "I hate to cut it short, but I have to head to my next class soon. Is there anything else you'd like to ask or talk about before I have to leave?"
Adam exchanged a quick look with Luca, silently before nodding. With a smile, he replied, "No, Cece, I think we're good. Thank you for coming to meet with us, and for your willingness to be a part of Paloma's life."
Cece's smile widened, and she stood up, picking up her backpack. "It was my pleasure, Adam. I'm really looking forward to getting to know her better.”
As Cece left the cafe, Luca turned to Adam with a grin. "I think we found our nanny, Adam."
Adam chuckled, a weight lifted off his shoulders. "Yeah, I think so too. She’s good.”
“That’s all you’re gonna say? She’s perfect, Adam.” He chuckled as he picked up the water and took a sip. “And she’s just your type.”
Adam rolled his eyes and groaned at Luca’s insinuation as he laughed. He wasn’t wrong, she is exactly his type and not just on paper, she was sweet and caring and- Adam stopped himself before he got too ahead of himself. “Remember what we both said not even two weeks ago?”
“No girls,” they said in unison and Luca let out a dramatic sigh. They had to focus on family and hockey, their main priorities before getting into any serious relationships. It was mostly Adam, though - after what happened with his ex he felt as if he couldn’t even think about relationships. Hockey and his family, more importantly Paloma, were his top priorities and love was simply a distraction. Right now, at least.

These past few days have been amazing! I've taken the time to really decide how I was going to move forward with this space and that starts now!
NO MORE CRITERIA! You may have already seen this, but here's the official announcement! Submit fics you want and YOU decide what an "underdog" fic really is. This was kind of my original idea, but I figured the criteria would help everyone have a jumping point to submit. That didn't work, but it's okay! Now we can just celebrate all the fics without any numbers pressuring us!
Starting in January, there will be a posting schedule! Every day you'll get several recommendations a day, but there will be certain days that are dedicated to different events. Like...
CHALLENGE MONDAYS - Each Friday we will challenge you all to a challenge. Each week will be a little different, but they will always be based around submitting recommendations. On Monday, all the fics posted will be from that challenge! You can suggest challenges here.
WRITERS WEDNESDAYS - Each Wednesday, we'll highlight one author! This author will answer some questions and all the recommendations from that day will be from this author. You can nominate authors here.
FIC FRIDAYS - On weeks without a theme weekend, I'll be giving my personal recs! Not every fic will be from me, but there will be at least two of my personal recs! Challenges will also go up EVERY Friday and we'll announce the theme for the NEXT week!
THEME WEEKENDS - Every other weekend, I'll pause the queue and only post only for a particular theme on Saturday and Sunday! Themes can be voted on here and we'll be announced the Friday before.
I've also changed how I'll be categorizing the fics to show what has been submitted. There will be a page organized by authors and another organized by title. The ratings and tags were just a bit ambitious! I'll still be tagging the actual posts with key tags though!
Tumblr media
This may be a lot right now, but this is the best way I can incorporate all of the ideas I have for this page! Will things change in the future? Absolutely! If these ideas don't pan out, then we'll stick to the regular fic recs, but it's fun to give it a try!
Thank you all for bearing with me!!! I've received a ton of support over the last few days and after taking the space to figure out what I wanted to do, it's been wonderful getting back into this.
You can submit fics through our asks and our submissions here!

Tales from Alderwood
Chapter 3: Trust or Loyalty (part 29)
I'm posting here at a somewhat weird time because the chapter happened to end on a Monday, and I didn't want to make it feel tonally weird lmao.
The next few updates are actually going to be part of an intermission of sorts-- I'm probably going to take a short break from uploading here and then come back and post those missed updates in bulk. Our main site will continue to post those intermission updates normally though, so if you prefer to get your content at a more steady pace during that time, you can do so over there. Our regular story content will resume around April 22nd. Or maybe the 26th, since we typically update Fridays over here. Point is, we've got it scheduled for the end of April lol.
In other news, we're also running an end-of-chapter reader survey! If you've got any feedback or things you'd like to see out of the future of our comic (or you just wanna help us gauge how we're doing), you can fill out our survey here.
Thanks so much for reading! We'll see you in the next update :)

Tumblr media
pt 1
Tumblr media
Summary: Adventures of Riri & her 'mini me'
Tumblr media
riri is 100% the, "don't tell mommy" parent.
Especially when you're going away on a business trip because occasionally there were events of which you could not attend from behind a computer screen or in the comfort of your home.
You had kissed your girls, goodbye but not before making sure to remind Riri of Naturis tight schedule- one that could not afford missing a step or else the almost 4 year old child would probably spiral out of control.
Riri had your luggage in one hand and her babygirl in the other, supporting the small child on her hips, the little ones head ontop of her shoulder, slight pout tugging on her lips because she knew all too well that you were going away despite the fact that she was promised a tea party- the ones she had every two weeks where she was allowed to stay up and help brew the tea (putting the water in before it boils of course), wear her pretty Sunday dresses and half inch babydoll shoes with the matching pearls her grandma Ronnie had gotten her.
*small flashback*
She was a crying mess earlier that morning when she went looking for you and saw the familiar frantic movements from one side of the room to the other, she was still only whining pulling at your sundress till she caught whift of your neatly folded clothes were packed into an ugly green suitcase- she really hated green- that was when the actual water works started to kick in.
Luckily Riri was right around the corner, sweeping her baby off her feet and into her arms, exiting the room with her before asking "What's wrong with my baby, hmm?" Rubbing her back soothingly until she was no longer hiccuping through her tears.
cooing at Naturi when she mutters something along the lines of, "Mommy's leav'n me, again" she sniffles out with a quivering bottom lip, making her heart break a bit more for the young being- truly her weakness.
Riri nods in understanding before wiping her childs tears away with her thumbs, "I know, I don't like when Mommy goes away either but, I'll tell you what--"
She manages to calm her daughter down one juice pouch later with a pinky promise to do the tea party and let her stay up after dinner to help make anything she wanted in her garage later.
The last bit you had no idea was happening, Of course.
*end of flashback*
Riris kissing you on the cheek then moves down pecking your lips a few more times- her sneaky way of trying to stop your rambles before you can start up again.
"Ma... I know how the stove works."
"I won't forget to have her in bed by 6, baby please."
"You can go, I swear we'll both be in one healthy, well fed & rested piece on Monday. Go enjoy your Gala, baby. I got this." She assures for hopefully the last time, giving you a hug with Naturi still in her tight hold.
"Mkay, just making sure." You say with a huff before turning to your child who still refused to look at you.
"Mommys gonna miss her princess so much." You say while pinching Naturis chubby cheeks between your thumb and index.
She's still reluctant to look at you, turning her head away but she's quickly reminded of her manners when Riri bounces her a little to high for her liking, "Hey, what do we say to mommy, huh?"
Naturis pout deepens before she offers a side hug and a extremely sour, "Love you too, mommy" nuzzling her head right back into her mamas neck.
Riri mouths out a sorry to you for her cranky behavior, before grabbing your chin and gifting you a lingering kiss on the lips, resting her head against yours when she needs to pull away for air and then...she's standing against the cracked open door watching you pull out the driveway.
Tumblr media
4 pm
"D'you like it, turi?" Riri asked with an expectant gaze, watching her daughters eyes light up as she sipped from the ridiculously tiny tea cups, with her pinky held up, proudly.
She nodded her head once she drunk it all, sitting it down on the princess themed coasters.
"s'good!" she exclaimed while rubbing her belly.
"N'so pretty...Did you know I liked pruprel the very most, mama?" she asked while peeking at the purple passionfruit tea swirling in the pitcher.
"Course, I did baby." Riri chuckled, moving uncomfortably in the small table chairs. Let's just pretend that they weren't the only tea bags she found in the pantry.
4:21 pm
Riri should've followed the schedule you set, she was now starting to regret digging through your closet because Naturi has been nothing above bossy & filled with sass since she got ahold of her fancy necklaces and a pair of mommy's white 'princess gloves'.
Riri was secretly trying to eat a chocolate chip cookie she had prepared specifically for the tea party, her stomach was growling as she hadn't eaten anything since way before you left so she didn't see why not.
Bad idea.
Riri crunched down on the sweet snack just as Naturi busted into the room with all her squishmallows in hand, "Mama, no!"
"Huh-" Riris smile quickly faded into a look of confusion as the young girl stomped into the room.
"You can't have food unless the most very important guest is eating too!" She tsked while dropping all of the plushies but one and sitting it next to her.
Where tf did she learn how to tsk?
She picks up a cookie off the tray and places it into one of her smaller dishes, sliding it infront of him, "There you go, Mr. Penguin."
"... Mama, you have to apologize to Mr. Penguin or else he won't eat."
Riri sideyed her daughter and the stuffed animal with a monocle glued on- and where the hell did she get that? She shakes her head, didn't even get to finish biting her cookie before hurriedly chewing and chugging it down with some of the warm tea still in her cup, it was really fucking dry. Naturi gave her a look as she held the cup up, she really didn't appreciate the fact that Riri forgot to hold out her pinky but she didn't voice it neither.
Unless a nasty glare counts, that is.
"Uhm, my fault Mr. Penguin dude...I thought I was the most very important guest." she huffs out, mumbling the latter under her breath.
Naturi claps excitedly, jumping up & down in response, "Thank you mama! You're forgiven!"
Tumblr media
5:15 pm
By five pm, Riri has already cleaned up the play area with the help of her sassy daughter and fixed & served dinner ; chicken Alfredo but with bowtie noodles because she knew Naturi liked how much they favored her real bows. Just something slight that she couldn't possibly burn.
"Alright, baby you full?" Riri asks, using a napkin to wipe away the remainder of the child's food that was on her cheeks instead of the actual plate.
"Mhmm!" Naturi responds, expanding on her words with her hand rubbing over her belly.
Riri takes her phone out for a few seconds as she checks to see if you opened the chain of pictures she snuck of Naturi & her plushies at her tea party. You didn't, so she knew you must've been swamped with work or just busy.
She hums before swiping down & then to the left for her camera, angling it at the young girl who quickly switched to her coloring papers after putting her plate into the sink.
"Wanna take a picture for mommy?" Riri asked before snapping one anyway.
Naturi looks up and makes a sound that Riri thinks means yes before dropping her pink crayon onto the sheet and jumping out her seat, "Can we make it a video instead?" she asks so sweetly with her big brown eyes blinking up at her, Riri didn't dare to decline.
That's how you ended up with another chain of 5 two minute videos of your daughter explaining why you should've stayed here with her because her and mama were having so much fun & they all ended the same way, her blowing a kiss and waving to the camera- you-, except for the last one where her and riri made sure to remind you that they "love and miss you so much" as well as Naturi convincing Riri to blow a kiss aswell.
5:40 pm
As it grows closer to six Riri has already bathed the child and it seemed to help calm her down a bit as she let her mama put her pj's on with no fuss at all.
Riri could tell that Naturi was getting sleepier as she could hardly keep her eyes open while brushing her teeth, so she when Turi finished up she asked, "you still wanna make something with me, baby or sleep first?"
Naturi mumbles something that sound close to "make sum- fing" even though she was yawning and basically talking in her sleep as her mama carried her into her room.
Once Naturi realized she was being tucked into her comforter she jolted up, "Mama I said-!"
"We can do it in the morning, after breakfast if you want mkay? I think you're too tired right now." Riri murmurs before kissing Naturis temples then cheeks, lighting pushing the child's tight coils to the back & out of her face.
For once, Naturi doesn't have it in her to fight back and just hums while settling into the warm sheets and slowly drifting to sleep.
Riri cracks the door which was directly across from the bedroom she shared with you, exiting the room just as her phone goes off.

mvm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! best day of the week:)))) could i please get some rockstar!james maybe it’s r first time touring and he’s just so excited to show them everything and introduce them to everyone and take them to all the places but after like two days r is exhausted and he feels so bad so they have a day in together 🥹🥹
today is multiverse monday, send me any au you can think of! :)
--
James is pacing, actually pacing with excitement, phone clutched in his hand as he walks past the end of your bed.
"-then after lunch we'll go to the art museum, it's just down a block from our restaurant. And afterwards at about 3PM, there's gonna be a karaoke event at this cafe I found, so I figured that would be fun, and-"
You nod along to each item on your itinerary, but you're exhausted. Spending time with James is fun no matter what you're doing, but right now, napping with him sounds best. You'll barely be able to muster up the energy to fill out this crazy checklist of his, but he's excited to share his time with you, and you'd feel awful not returning the enthusiasm. You let a yawn slip from your mouth, trying not to sigh too hard as you raise your hand to cover the expression.
"-when karaoke's done, we can head over to-" James glances up from the notes app of his phone where he's laid out your schedule, watching as you shut your mouth, eyes slightly teary from the yawn, "Uh- darling, are you tired?"
"A bit," You nod, voice scratchy with a plea for sleep, "Go ahead, Jamie."
He makes his decision in a split second, locking his phone and leaving it on the dresser as he heads for the bed.
"No, it's alright," He hums, pulling back the covers to slide beneath them, "Let's have a rest."
"There's no time," You lament, "Don't we have to be to the amusement park by 9 AM?"
"Our passes are refundable," James lies through his teeth, mourning the loss of his cash, "It's alright, darling, you need rest. I've been dragging you around quite a lot, haven't I?"
"No, James-" You start, but he shushes you with a single shake of his head.
"Rest, love." He urges, burrowing under the covers himself and relishing in the feeling of relaxation that he didn't know he needed, "We can order lunch in, and karaoke isn't important. I'm a bloody rockstar, for fuck's sake, I can sing whenever I want."

Greetings, Unfuckers!
Let's go ahead and get it out of the way: Yeah, yeah, I'm one of those assholes dipping their toes back into tumblr after an extended time away. I'm hoping you'll show some mercy due to my many previous years of service here and the fact that this is UfYH's original home.
Also! This coming Monday is 11 years since UfYH started. ELEVEN YEARS. So hello to everyone who's been here since the beginning.
What's been going on in UfYH's world in the past few years? Some highlights:
I wrote a book and a guided journal, which I'm really proud of. The first book now exists in English (US and UK), German, Russian, and Turkish.
My first book was updated in the UK with a less-sweary title and the new edition came out this summer.
I quit my day job of 17 years and am freelancing full-time and paying for my health insurance with the help of my Patreon patrons.
I focused mainly on the UfYH Twitter, because that format works really well for me, but, well, you know.
I haven't decided yet where I'm going to go with UfYH on tumblr this time around. I'm gonna be honest, folks. Social media is wildly draining and not always great for my mental health. And constantly creating content (ugh, I hate it, but that's the most accurate word) is exhausting.
But! I think a similar approach to what I've been doing on Twitter might work here — sending out random small challenges with an occasional meandering monologue on my cleaning philosophy or whatever. I'm probably not going to resume scheduled reminders or reblog a ton of before and afters, mainly because that's all really time-consuming and involved.
Anyway, I'm reminded that one way tumblr is great for me is that I can post these ramblings and don't have to create a graphic or plot stuff out a month in advance. The most I can promise is that we'll see how it goes, but, well, isn't that kind of what UfYH is about anyway?

In a Few Minutes
summary: On your walk home from class, Aki kinda sorta saves your life.
content/warnings: college au, HURT/COMFORT, first kiss, so soft, NDE
wc: 1.4k
Tumblr media
After classes for the day are over with, you always look forward to meeting Aki outside his building and strolling back to your shared apartment almost as much going home by itself. You know each other so well that these walks are often spent in comfortable silence—they're simply the beginning of your evening routine.
No one ever believes that you and Aki just friends after they've seen you together (sometimes, even based on the way you talk about each other), including yourself from time to time. Aki seems to like giving mixed signals, and it's not like he's an open book.
Today isn't unlike any other day so far, save for another mixed signal.
Snow dusts the ground, and the cold makes attempts to penetrate the scarf wrapped snug around your neck. Every inhale feels like ice, and leaves in a puff of fog. You even have your arms crossed and your hands buried in your armpits in attempts to warm your hands. Rubbing them together does nothing.
Aki speaks for the first time since you met up. "You forgot your gloves."
"I forgot my gloves," you confirm gravely. "It's so fucking cold..."
Aki's long puffy coat makes him look like a penguin. He suddenly stops, and begins to work one of his woolen gloves off.
"Aki—" you chuckle nervously. "It's only a couple minutes."
"Yes, I know, but you've gone all day without them." He's grumbling almost to himself, frowning troubled. "I'm sorry I didn't notice earlier."
He's apologizing?
On Mondays and Wednesdays, your schedules align so you can have lunch together, and on Mondays specifically, you both leave the apartment at the same time. Today is Monday.
"I forgive you," you assure, still joking, but he isn't. He seems to give something some thought, takes his left glove off, and gives it to you. You're relieved he doesn't give you both, or god forbid the clothes off his back, but that relief is blown away by shock as he takes your hand.
One of his gloves on your left hand, his one on his right. That leaves you the perfect opportunity to—
"Now we'll both be warm," he says quietly, but he sounds unsure. He's watching you. "It's only a couple minutes, so."
"Yeah. Okay, let's go," you agree quickly. How is that disappointing now? Only a couple minutes...
But walking the winding path to your apartment feels like it takes longer today. You hardly pass anyone. Your heart pounds, and your cheeks feel hot despite the chilly wind. You can't help the butterflies fluttering inside you that this is how Aki would hold hands with you if you were together. His are much bigger than yours, so besides the fact that you're forced to keep your gloved hand curled, lest the glove falls off, the hand which holds yours almost engulfs it. It's still warm from the glove... and very soft.
You treasure these last few minutes before you have to let go as you arrive at the last street you have to cross to get home, the kind with a path down the middle that cuts the asphalt in half, with pedestrian signs, but no lights.
Normally, you'd look. You're so taken with your thoughts, and the world has been so still and quiet, that the crossing doesn't even occur to you. Aki barely hesitates.
It happens before you can even blink. A roaring engine blasts from your left, and it feels like your right shoulder leaves it's fucking socket as you're yanked backwards, nearly stumbling to your knees when you're hit with a bunch of hot exhaust. Forgotten leaves from the autumn season take off around you like drunken birds.
Aki curses, ripping you back another few steps before you're literally left in the dust of a truck whose hood must've been taller than your head.
What just happened? you try to ask, but your eyes are wide, still in shock.
Breathing hard, his arm hooks over your shoulder and protectively reels you to him. You find yourself pinned to him in a tight embrace, your cheek squished against the chilly puffiness of his coat. You're shocked by his proximity, the way you suddenly feel so safe, and the remnants of adrenaline still running through your blood.
"Are you okay??" he asks breathlessly over your hair. "That—That fucking idiot, almost..."
The sound of his voice snaps you out of your stupor. You hug him back, but you get the feeling that you're both shaking. He says your name urgently.
"I'm fine, I just wasn't paying attention... If you weren't holding—my hand..."
"Don’t say that," he snaps. "Surprised if he—if he hasn't already killed someone. Fuck," he whispers. His hold on you hasn't slackened at all. “I’m glad I…”
You feel the same. Letting go somehow scares you now. It's true—if Aki hadn't noticed your lack of gloves and insisted he hold your hand, then that could've ended... another way.
Neither of you so much as squirm for the longest time, and as time marches on, this hug begins to feel like something else. You're in the middle of deciding whether to say something—and if you did, what you'd say—when he suddenly lets go of you, tears out his phone, and immediately begins to type something. Aki is more furious than you've ever seen him.
"License plate," he says flatly at your stare, without looking up.
Your first instinct is to dismiss him from going through the trouble, but you immediately let it go. Besides, he looks scary right now. You wish he'd hold you like that again.
Instead you look around. Streetlamps illuminate your surroundings, but at dusk, no one appears to be around. It's as if nothing even happened.
Still not looking at you, Aki takes out his cigarette pack, and then struggles with his glove for his lighter. He seems panicked, and once he finally gets the cigarette and lighter in his hands, you noticed it's shaking profusely. He can't even light it.
"Aki, I'm okay, it's okay." You step closer, but his expression only turns more conflicted. "Seriously! It's over now, so just."
You take his shoulders, forcing his attention towards you. His deep blue eyes still look anxious.
"Here." You pluck the lighter from his hand. "Let me."
The lighter hisses as the flame is born, and you get the cigarette lit. You slide the lighter back in his pocket for him.
"Th...Thank you," he says quietly. His eyes flutter when he inhales, and he inhales deeply. Still. Neither of you start walking again.
"Are we... Are we going?"
Aki stares down at his cigarette for a moment. He moves aloofly, like he hasn't decided what he's going to do even as he does it. And then he's hugging you again—carefully, with his lit cigarette held over your shoulder. You melt against him.
“That was dumb luck," he remarks bitterly. "If... I don't know what I'd do if, if..."
You pull away just enough to look up at him. "Me neither... But it didn't. We're safe. Thank you."
Aki holds your gaze until you could swear his eyes are glittering. Then he scoops up your chin, pulls you close, and kisses you.
Your heart jumps right to your throat when you feel his lips press to yours. They're just slightly chapped from the cold, rich from the tobacco. In moments you kiss back and sling your arms around his neck. His hand slides down, cupping your nape to keep you close.
Suddenly, he pulls away by inches. You still feel his breath on your face. "I should’ve asked first. Can I kiss you?"
You don't know whether to laugh or cry. Smiling widely, you slam your lips together again. You enjoy him too much to feel the cold at all.
Aki kisses you with an intensity that's still somehow careful, like he's worried you'll for some reason pull away and take back everything. Your lips smack. It last for so long that nearly half of his cigarette has burned away on its own when you finally pull away.
"Maybe we should go on a date," you remark, laughing breathlessly. "Kind of a shitty memory for a first kiss."
He takes a fleeting drag, his hand still not having left your waist. "Yeah." Then he looks around. "Let's just get you home first."
Just a few minutes, you think again, and smile.
