#. this gave me a fanfic idea#in sonic 06 shadow was seen to be captured because he was deemed too dangerous by the people there so he does exist in the future.. of#course. bc he's immortal. but in silver's bad timeline he was captured#so#one of my recent delusions were what if silver had freed him? seeking for help#like an excited kid who read about him and sonic's feats and realized that shadow should exist in his timeline#so he sought after him and ended up freeing him entirely and asking him to help fix their bad timeline#so thats. a story!!! basically i love them and i feel their interactions specifically with each other would be really nice and intresting t#see !!!!#so . now i just saw ^^^ that image#and#omggggg omguhiuiah duwiaduawdawUHIHUAIWUDHAUIDWADW MY VISION. MY VISION HELP help#what if after the Sonic The Hedgehog's eventual end due to time and just.. reality and the passing of him and the gang#shadow went into stasis#^ that was also part of my many delusions. BUT NOW THIS KINDA... LIKE#THIS GUY WROTE SA2#BASICALLY BASICALLY !!!!!! WHAT IF SILVER WOKE HIM UP AGAIN. IN THAT SCENARIO IN THAT STORY IT'D BE INTRESTING#he would indeed be asking for help#and they would be the heroes of the new world#the new time the new generation#200 years after#continuing sonic's legacy!!!! it'd be a fun but melachonic spin off story#that au would be if 06 didnt happen... so it'd be shadow and silver's first meeting#shadow would be really sad about what happened but silver is not. a ray of sunshine. silver is also traumatized severely by everything so h#pulls shadow into the present ( of that bad timeline/future ) and they both realize they need to focus and save the world and build their#future themselves....#and to live in the present#aahuiuwdihwaudw i feel it'd be. an interesting story

DEATH BATTLE Review: Wally West vs. Archie Sonic
Time to find out who deserves to have their picture next to the definition of speed in the dictionary!
Wally′s Preview.
The story opens on the most iconic feat of the Flash: Saving the multiverse. But as it cost him his life, the world was left without a Scarlet Speedster. So, who better to take up the mantle than his protégé, Wally West?
The hosts note the sheer number of coincidences that led to Barry getting his powers, only to then segway into how Wally got his.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The guy literally got the exact same scenario as Barry had. Why?- Because Speed Force.
Tumblr media
First off: That last line about Lex Luthor having no idea who he is made me laugh a bit more than was probably intended. Second: The hosts then go over Wally’s feats and powers.
They’re pretty much the same as Barry’s, so a lot of scaling can be done.
Tumblr media
They also note that pulling this off requires Wally to be smart.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Wiz lets slip that he spiked Boomstick’s beer with some cosmic whatchamacallit, and that kinda ends the gag).
Tumblr media
They go over more of Wally’s powers, and to be honest, I’m surprised that I haven’t accidentally put “Barry” In place of “Wally.” Their names aren’t that far off from each other.
Anyways, Infinite Mass Punch Physics!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, Wally has pulled off some pretty crazy feats of… ignoring reality.
Tumblr media
Like manipulating energies not native to his own universe,
Tumblr media
outrunning the speed force,
Tumblr media
outracing DEATH ITSELF! To the point that DEATH DIED!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And outracing instantaneous teleportation!
In a race against the previous Scarlet Speedster, The sheer amount of speed the two were giving off managed to nearly break not just the universe, but the MULTIVERSE!
Tumblr media
At some point, you gotta wonder: What DC Writer failed Physics so hard that he made a hero that just broke all laws of physics? Also, Wally is still somehow still considered to be human.
Tumblr media
And thankfully, Wally’s family has kept him tethered to this plane of existence, so it’s hard to disrupt him or paradox him out.
But the most impressive feat that Wally did?- Proving to himself that he was worthy to carry on the mantle of the Flash… Aaah!
Tumblr media
(I remember this episode. This was one of my favorite episodes ever).
A!Sonic′s Preview.
For reference, I will be referring to this version of Sonic as A!Sonic. Just to keep things consistent. I think I missed it in one area, but I don’t think that matters.
So, a brief history on the Archie Sonic universe… The hosts are quick to emphasize that Archie!Sonic is much much different than game Sonic.
Tumblr media
Anyways, after a brief backstory on the Hedgehog, the hosts go over his absurd powerset.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when I say absurd, let’s just say that that’s putting it lightly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The comic even states that Sonic’s speed is incalculable.
Tumblr media
In a missed moment, this is all thanks to the Chaos Force. Which is very similar to the Speed Force, so I’m a tad disappointed that they didn’t bring that up.
Tumblr media
In a nutshell: The Chaos Force is infinite energy that fuels all living beings on Mobius… or something… It takes physical form as rings or emeralds.
Tumblr media
Sonic has collected so many of these rings, that he now has a permanent force field that keeps him protected at all times.
Tumblr media
But, much like the games, Sonic has a super form. Super Sonic. A form that could stop this guy
Tumblr media
from ripping him apart molecule by molecule.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wiz notes that it still has a time limit, much like in the games, but that that limit is pretty long. But it’s overpowered by Ultra Sonic.
Tumblr media
The Chaos Force is so absurd, that it can rearrange molecules. And that’s not just limited to non-organic beings, as shown by Boomstick:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
DUMMI gets set on fire after this. It’s a niche gag.
Then they go on to list how crazy stuff that the Chaos Force can do.
Tumblr media
Like grant wishes.
However, Sonic and Eggman are kinda… Two sides of the same coin.  And Sonic’s thirst for adventure and action means that he can’t really get rid of him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even still, Sonic’s feats are impressive.
Tumblr media
In fact, this Sonic is so absurdly powerful, that the only way to really beat him would be to just wait until he dies. As he is essentially an embodiment of chaos.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Battle Itself.
Luis and Zack are heading this animation, Wally West will be voiced by Joshua Waters and Archie Sonic will be voiced by Nicholas Andrew Louie. Way Past Flash by Brandon Yates. Audio led by Chris Kokkinos.
So the fight opens up on Flash and Sonic having a race.
Tumblr media
Typical trash talk and stuff, Sonic eats a Chili Dog, and Flash steals it, and they trash talk a bit more.
Tumblr media
At this rate, the season finale is going to start because the two combatants are both racing to the last cinnamon roll in a mall or something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, it takes a while, but Wally eventually steals Sonic’s speed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonic notices an Emerald, and he’s back in the race.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, after a while, the two are now in a different part of the multiverse.
Tumblr media
Wally apparently has pushed Sonic to the point that the Hedgehog needs to use Ultra Sonic to keep up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, credit where it’s due: This does trip up Flash a bit. But not by enough. Flash manages to get in a good kick on Sonic.
Tumblr media
So, yeah.
Finishing Blow in
5…
4…
3…
2…
1…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Verdict + Explanation.
This part got a bit glitchy on Tumblr. So if it’s blank, that’s why.
Now for starters, the two combatants are so absurd that it’s hard to determine where to start.
Tumblr media
Speed is essentially a non-factor due to how absurdly fast the two are. So that alone wasn’t enough to net a win.
Tumblr media
That Black Hole implosion wasn’t as impressive as you might think. Sonic’s been knocked out by far less, Black Holes are already imploding (so it’s not that special), and there’s some snow that survived the whole thing. Plus, even if it’s taken literally, the Infinite Mass Punch is still stronger than a Black Hole.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Base Sonic is essentially a pushover. He has no real defenses against Wally’s powerset, and it would be easy for him to net a win. But that’s not interesting, so they go over what would happen if Sonic could get his Super Forms, which change things up. Between invincibility and wish powers, it would be hard to get around it.
So why could Wally?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well, Wally has more absurd speed feats than Sonic, so he’s got an experience advantage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sonic’s powers have limits that Wally can manipulate, Wally has the endurance advantage, and Sonic has no real defenses against Time-Travel shenanigans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If push came to shove, Wally could wait out the timer and then just beat Sonic then.
And Sonic couldn’t bend fate to off Wally for him because fate is essentially Wally’s bitch. Like the time when he outraced death, and killed him.
Tumblr media
And molecular manipulation was off the table, as Wally has perfect control over all of his.
Wiz’s experiment kicks in about here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall impression.
Okay, this part got deleted a few times. So I’ll make it quick: The rundowns are awesome. The hosts trying to comprehend the absurdity of these characters was really great, and added a lot to the episode as a whole.
The researchers deserve far more credit than they usually get, not just for this episode, but for all of them in general, and it was their hard work that made this possible.
The animation is gorgeous. And I really like how they managed to show how each of the powers would interact with one another.
9.5/10
Next Time…
I hope these guys are alright. It must be hard getting work in these conditions…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But by the GODS! I am excited for this fight!
Is there a fight that you want me to review? - Send an ask/request, and I’ll look into it!

176. Sonic the Hedgehog #108
Tumblr media
Oh… please, come on, man… not this…
Robotnik x 2 = Trouble!
Writer: Benny Lee Pencils: Ron Lim Colors: Josh & Aimee Ray
So, did you think that perhaps for once in the history of comic books, that we'd actually seen a major villain die for good? Well, apparently not so! Eggman has detected the strange reality fluctuations caused by Knuckles several days ago, and gleefully demonstrates to the newly-roboticized Snively that one such fluctuation can be localized directly within their lab. What - or who - might this fluctuation affect, you ask?
Tumblr media
Just outside of Knothole, the Freedom Fighters are relaxing and playing a nice game of hide and seek, when Tails, who is "it," runs smack into Robotnik, looking battered and scared. They're all, of course, incredibly shocked at his reappearance, and skeptical when he claims that Eggman brought him back, but is even worse than he ever was. He ran for his life, wishing now to seek shelter in Knothole. The Freedom Fighters reluctantly bring him to the king and queen, who get him a checkup by Dr. Quack to ensure he's not merely a robotic duplicate, and then, despite his literal war crimes, just… allow him to stay in the village. With all the people he tortured and terrorized barely more than a year ago. Seriously, not even a trial for his crimes? Nothing?
Tumblr media
Robotnik seems to have settled right in, despite Sonic's obvious exasperation, and as the crew flies him to Robotropolis he eagerly speaks about perhaps becoming allies after all this is over, while they mostly ignore him in favor of playing cards. They infiltrate the city and fight a cursory number of shadow-bot guards, and Robotnik leads them to a room with a suspiciously-shaped "computer," inviting them to stand on a platform in the center of it and have Nicole take some readings while he accesses the mainframe. Of course, this is when he shows his true colors, and traps them in an energy field that harnesses the power of Eggman's "matter fluctuator" while the two alternate-universe villains giggle with each other, ecstatic that their plan to erase their enemies seems to be working.
Tumblr media
The Freedom Fighters reveal that they knew Robotnik was trying to trick them all along, and only played along so that he would lead them straight to the device that brought him back so they could destroy it. He's baffled by this since he's already been brought, and as he and Eggman begin to fistfight over the failure of their plot the Freedom Fighters leave, satisfied that their job is done. Their true intentions become clear very quickly, as due to Robotnik's manner of return, his molecules were very unstable, and in the middle of the fight he vanishes back into oblivion, causing Eggman to punch Snively accidentally and then become furious at his loss once again.
This story basically ended up going nowhere, as Robotnik really, truly is gone for good this time, but I suspect it was mostly written as a lead-in to the two character files we'll be perusing today - one on the original Robotnik, and the other on Eggman, AKA Robo-Robotnik. We'll be skipping the explanations of their life stories, as we already know all of it - no new information is provided - and instead we'll look at the technical details. First of all are their height and weight. These details are identical for both entities, as they come from near-identical backgrounds in their respective zones. Their height is 189 cm or 6'2", which is only one inch taller than their game counterpart. However, their weight is where we run into a bit of a problem. Given all the tasteless jokes made especially in the early days of the comic about how fat and humongous and gargantuan Robotnik is, how heavy exactly would you imagine he is? I bet you didn't guess 61.7 kg or 135.8 lbs. That is not just an absurdly low weight for a being of his stature, that is my own weight. I'm pretty sure this is just a big oversight on the part of the writer, because there's no way in hell an obese six-foot-tall man shares his weight with an average-height, average-build girl in her early 20s. For Eggman, however, though I'm sure he shared his body type with Robotnik when he existed within his own zone, those stats are likely to be a bit different now due to his being a robot in a new body and all.
As far as their ages, this is where they differ significantly. They shared their early history in their respective zones, so both were born on the same birthday of September 10. However, the original Robotnik died at age 45, almost 46, when the Ultimate Annihilator went off. I include "almost 46" because the character file actually gives an exact date of death, June 13, meaning we now know to the day exactly when Endgame occurred. Endgame played out over the course of three days, so that whole shebang started on June 11, which was also the day Sally supposedly died before the truth was revealed. Please keep this date in mind, it will become important in a few issues. Eggman's reality, on the other hand, diverged a few years before Endgame, resulting in his own roboticization at the age of 43. At this point, his physical age likely "froze" since he was no longer bound by the aging process of flesh and blood, while his mental age continued to progress. His zone's timeline has already surpassed that of Mobius Prime, as in that zone Sonic and Sally were married with children, so mentally he'd more likely be somewhere in his late fifties or early sixties. Makes sense to me, though original Robotnik was certainly a little younger than I had imagined him to be.
"…A Girl Named Hope!"
Writer: Karl Bollers Pencils: J. Axer Colors: Josh & Aimee Ray
Sally has received a letter from Hope Kintobor, who was taken along to Station Square with the rest of the refugees, and decides to bring it to her parents to read it out to them. Hope proves herself to be a very well-spoken young girl in the letter, writing about how when she and her people first landed on the outskirts of Robotropolis and she saw Sonic, she thought he looked scary, as she'd never seen a Mobian before. However, over the course of living in the city, she began to mistrust her uncle after seeing more evidence of his roboticization of Mobians, and eventually realized that the Mobians were better than she had been led to believe after witnessing them rescue both their roboticized brethren and the rest of the Overlanders.
Tumblr media
She describes how most of her life in space, ever since she was two years old, was spent in cryosleep, learning about the history of their home planet, including the details of the Great War between her people and the Mobians. They only ended up returning because their ship's power supply began to fail, but now, she no longer feels at home amongst her people, with the loss of her stepfather and grandmother.
Tumblr media
This is honestly a very sweet story, and I'm glad we'll be seeing more of Hope. She was definitely the most interesting character among the Overlanders, and she's obviously a very observant and intelligent girl.
Reunification (Part 3)
Writer: Ken Penders Pencils: Dawn Best Colors: J&A Ray
Lara-Le is not at all happy about Knuckles' decision to join up with the Legion, even scolding him for what his father will likely think when he finds out. Knuckles becomes defensive and asks her why they can't just hear him out first, and she replies that she thinks he's too much of a threat to her children.
Tumblr media
Wow, Lara-Le, you and Wynmacher have been pretty busy then, huh? That's a pretty big gap between your kids' ages there - Knuckles is gonna be seventeen by the time that baby is born, assuming that Mobian echidnas have a similar gestational period to humans. While he and his mother continue to discuss matters, Dimitri goes before the council to argue his case for reuniting echidna society. Most of the members present have obvious misgivings, but one Mitre agrees that society should come back together instead of fighting, though he expresses some disapproval of Dimitri's methods through such extensive cybernetics. While they continue to argue things out, Lara-Su waits outside Lara-Le's apartment, waiting for Knuckles to come out so she can spy on him and ensure he's not killed. He exits, and she follows him to the council chambers, witnessing him talk briefly with Lien-Da on the steps outside the building. She recognizes Lien-Da as "the one person Mom absolutely refuses to talk about." The two go inside, and Knuckles steps forward to express his reluctant support for Dimitri, commanding the respect of those present since they know he's fought with Dimitri many times before. Interestingly, the current echidna government is referred to as "the theocracy" in contrast to Dimitri's "technocracy" - elements of an echidna religion have been hinted at here and there, such as Lara-Le praying in the Aurorium, and the councilor all the way back when Dimitri first "died" quoting from what sounded like some kind of bible, but I think this is the first indication we've ever had that the current government is literally a theocracy, running according to a religious tradition instead of an intellectual one. This puts an interesting - and even more worrying - spin on the whole "banning technology" thing, as real life has shown time and again that religious fundamentalism almost always leads to hypocrisy and needlessly-restricted personal freedoms, which honestly fits exactly with everything that we've seen over the echidnas' history so far. But anyway, while Knuckles says his piece about trying to work together and resolve differences, Lara-Su tries to badger her way into the council chambers, only to be stopped by a guard.
Tumblr media
What a cliffhanger! I'm sure there's no way she's interpreting the situation wrong due to not seeing everything that's happened up to this point, right? Right?

Short Fic (4dow + Stary-Sonic)
----------------------------------------
Quick little thing..its 10pm and i forgot to do my homework :D
Also..lets say this takes place in Sonic X..? S3 tho👌
☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁☁
Tired.
That's all the small little fox felt as she quietly scrolled through her Tumblr feed.
Why was everything suddenly so dull and uneventful ? Waking up in the morning was already a chore ! And it didnt help that Shadow wasnt around anymore.
He wanted to 'make the world a better place' so he flew back up into space with the blue blur Sonic to finish off what was left of Eggman and the Meterex.
Why couldnt he make HER world a better place !? What happened to always being there for eachother through thick and thin !?
Maybe these thoughts of hers were selfish..but she couldnt help it..
She missed her cute little hedgie.
And would do anything to see him again.
A soft knock could be heard from the front door. Since the house was already dead silent, Helena heard it and got up to answer it.
She opens the door and is greeted by a soft rabbit. Her old time friend,Me'Re.
"Oh hey...you ok ?" Helena steps aside to let her in.
"Yea..I'm ok...I just..felt lonely.." She says, forcing a smile. She sits on a sofa and looks at her shoes.
"I understand..but..I'm sure they'll be back soon !" She says as she closes the door, walking back to her respected spot on the other sofa, just across the room.
To be honest, she didnt think they would come back.
They have been gone for almost a year. She was certain that they both forgotten about the ones that loved them most.
The men didnt even bother giving them a call or sending them any letters...
Sure, Sonic has been imprisoned twice and Shadow thrown through space and falling down towards Earth on multiple occasions. But they always managed to find their way back to the ones they love.
Helena was so lost in her thoughts, she didnt hear the rabbit hiccup gently across the room.
"I-I thought they loved us Helena..."
Helena snaps out of her thoughts at looks at the little rabbit. She sighs and walks across the room and sits next to her, pulling her into a hug.
"No need to cry...its ok...maybe one day they will come back."
Stop lying.
They wont come back.
They never will...
Helena teared up alittle gripping the small girls shirt gently.
"O-Of course they w-will come back Me-Me ! D-Don't be foolish !"
They were both foolish if they think they'd come back after a year.
Face it...they...were gone.
She broke down. And it seemed like she wasn't gonna calm down for hours on end.
All they had was eachother for the time being.
No friends.
Just eachother.
Hours went by and the two had cried eachother to sleep on the couch. They didn't bother locking the front door for safety...
Not like anyone would come in..
The time read 1:55am.
The front door gently opened to reveal, yes, two extremely tired and beaten up hedgehogs.
To clarify, fighting in space was very hard for the two amateurs. Sonics speed abilities were limited due to the lack of gravity and so were Shadows chaos abilities, due to the fact that the Meterex had all 7 of them. The first plan of theirs was to beat the emeralds out of the Meterex and find them all before they could. Classic yet dumb Sonic move.
Just that alone took them months.
The galaxy was so big...and....endless...
The REAL fight probably only took them an hour or two.
They obviously win the fight. The Meterex was destroyed for good..and well...so was Eggman.
The fight took a toll on their physical forms though.
Sonics eye was scratched up, leaving him somewhat blind and his legs were damn near broken due to all of the kicking he's done. Shadow on the other hand was slightly worse. His body was weak, fur discolored. Bloodshot eyes and broken fingers. Not only that, but scars littered both of their small bodies. Lets just say...these men aren't very..pretty while angry.
Anyway, the present.
The two hedgehogs walk into the small house and sit on the couch.
"Damnit...I can't feel my arms.." Shadow growls out as he lays down.
"Haha..my legs...theyre so numb !" Sonic awkwardly laughs as he lays next to him.
They silently stare up at the dark ceiling for awhile..
"Do you think they remember us Shads..?"
"....Dont be stupid Sonic...of course they remember us.."
Sonic shivers a bit and turns to face him
"What if they're mad...? What if they dont love us anymore !? What if--"
Snoring cuts him off.
He stares at Shadows peaceful sleeping form and sighs.
"Guess we'll see tomorrow" he tries his best to shift into a comfortable position and rests easy.
Finally free.
Finally home.
Morning time ✨
It was 11am.
Shadow yawns and jolts up. He frantically looks around the room.
So comfortable...so..soothing..
He examines the room...
And his heart instantly melts.
The first thing he notices is his beautiful lover and her bestest friend cuddled on the couch fast asleep.
His emo heart throbbed at the pure and gentle scene. He tapped Sonic on the shoulder to wake him. Sonic, being a gentle sleeper after a year of constant battle, woke up instantly. He looked at Shadow and then directly in front if him.
Gah two mushy hedgehog hearts..
Sonic blushes at the sight of his baby craddled in Helenas arms. Hes quick to notice dry tears staining both of the ladies pretty faces.
And well..
Tears start to stain both of their faces as well.
"Damn..we really have been gone for a long time havent we...?" Shadow huffs out looking over at the azure hedgehog
"Y-Yea...I...I guess so" He wipes his tears away and sniffs softly.
"God I missed her" they sung in unison.
This of all things woke Helena up.
She yawns and looks down at Me'Re. She squeaks and eventually wakes up too.
"Good morning Me'Re..".she smiles at her
"Good morning.." She smiles, still tired.
"....good morning.." The hedgehogs once again sang in unison. More quietly this time however
The pair are quick to snap their heads towards the sound and they freeze.
They quietly stare at eachother.
Mind racing.
Heart racing.
Were they really here...? Alive ? Well ?
Still theirs ?
Helena is the first to stand up. She awkwardly and slowly walks towards Shadow.
She cups his cheeks and stares into his shiny ruby eyes.
God how she missed those eyes...
"...Shadow..?"
"...hi...Blue Stripe..."
She cries instantly and passionately kisses his slightly chapped lips.
So much love and care went into that one kiss.
One kiss. That she hoped would never end..
As the two slowly start to kiss even more passionately, Me'Re is still staring at Sonic And sonic still staring at her.
Its almost as if their brains havent fully comprehended what was happening.
This wasnt a dream.
It was a reality.
So..to make sure his mind wasnt playing games on him again, Sonic attempted to get up but fell back down due to the numbess in his legs.
He hisses and rubs his legs, attempting to wake them from their never ending slumber but, of course, failed.
Me'Re quickly gets up and runs over to him, helping him on his feet
"..a-are you ok 'nikku ?"
"I-I..."
He stares into her eyes and analyzes them more closely.
"I dont think I'm dreaming.." He says as he gives her a gentle hug.
She's quick to start crying and hugs him back.
Shadow breaks the kiss and hugs Helena tightly, tight enough to remind himself that she was there. Finally in his arms again. Where she belonged.
"I missed you..way too much..." He whispered in her ear, a tear seeping its way out of his eye. Helena, on the other hand was a crying mess.
"I-I-I-"
"Shhh..its ok..save your voice.."
They stay locked in that position. And they didnt dare move.
They needed this
They needed eachother.
Sonic is quick to pull away and stare at her again.
"My god..its the eyes I fell inlove with."
Me'Re blushed and looked away, though Sonic is quick to put a finger under her chin and make her look at him.
They kiss.
Not as long as edgelord and the artlord in the corner though.
But still sweet, nonetheless.
They break it and sit on the other couch aross the room. Sonic lays on his back and Me'Re lays ontop of him.
"Promise me Sonic..."
"Hm ?"
She cries again and looks into his dreamy eyes.
"P-Promise you wont leave me alone like that again..."
Helena is quick to look at Me'Re then back at Shadow, who simply nods his head and pecks her forehead.
Sonic looks over and Shadow who smiles warmly at him.
He looks back down at her
"I....no....WE promise."

Sonic Villains: Sweet or Shite? - Part 10: INFINITE
There are some villains I like. And there are some villains I don’t like. But why do I feel about them the way I do? That’s where this comes in.
This is a series of mine in which I go into slightly more detail about my thoughts on the villains in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and why I think they either work well, or fall flat (or somewhere in-between). I’ll be giving my stance on their designs, their personalities, and what they had to show for themselves in the game(s) they featured in. Keep in mind that these are just my own personal thoughts. Whether you agree or disagree, feel free to share your own thoughts and opinions! I don’t bite. :>
Anyhow, for today’s installment, we’ll be sharpening our blades and resisting the pain as we discuss what it takes to be the right-hand henchman of Sonic Forces: Infinite.
Tumblr media
The Gist: Dr. Eggman was minding his evildoing business when one day, from thin air emerged a particularly strange jewel that seemed to be drawn to him. Realising this was no mere Chaos Emerald, due to both its peculiar shape and its bizarre reality-distorting effects, Eggman immediately contemplated how he could effectively utilise this new gemstone for his purposes.
Suddenly, jackals!
Tumblr media
“Go forth, Red Shirts!”
Eggman's base was under attack by the imaginatively titled Jackal Squad, a group of thieving mercenaries who figured they could profit from the theft of the doctor's equipment. Unfortunately for them, Eggman had Main Character Immunity, so their efforts to kill him send him to the Shadow Realm fell flat. Despite nearly getting killed by them, Eggman knew an opportunity when he saw one, and he offered the role of apprenticeship to the squad's heterochromia-inflicted leader. His fellow jackals insisted not to take up the offer, because even they knew the risks, but the leader signed up immediately, because he's not all right in the head if you know what I'm saying.
In a cruel twist of fate, Eggman's first request for his new stooges was for them to take care of Shadow the Hedgehog. That Shadow the Hedgehog. Ultimate Lifeform Shadow the Hedgehog. Fast, immortal, capable of stopping time, drops his bracelets to grow even stronger Shadow the Hedgehog. They had to defeat that Shadow the Hedgehog.
They did not succeed.
Tumblr media
BOOOONESAAAAAW’S READYYYYYYYY
After metaphorically and literally murdering the rest of the already forgotten squad, Shadow gave some parting words to their defeated leader, and those parting words were responsible for what happened next, and everything after. As someone who prided himself on being the ultimate mercenary, Mr. Jackal was bloody well peeved off about coming to terms with his physical shortcomings, and thus decided to give himself an upgrade in the form of sticking a gem on his chest, putting on a mask worthy of a heavy metal cover, and rechristening himself as... Infinite. Infinite power. Infinite possibilities. Infinite memes.
The upgrade paid off. With the aid of the gem, known to us as the Phantom Ruby, Eggman's latest minion was able to distort the environment, summon past foes, and do what no other villain not retconned out of existence had ever managed to achieve: defeat Sonic the Hedgehog.
Eggman was delighted. The past foes were delighted too, as evidenced by how they stood there to take it all in.
Tumblr media
This is a very sentimental moment for them.
With Sonic out of the way, Eggman was able to take over 99% of the planet, because Sonic's friends were tragically all on holiday at the same time. During the subsequent six months of suffering and strife, Infinite relished in the doctor's conquest, but not as much as he relished in killing and terrorizing innocents. One incident in particular involved him leaving behind a scared youngster for the sake of letting them know fear. This would turn out to be a big mistake on his part, when - with the ever reliable power of friendship - said youngster would go on to oppose him as part of the Resistance. (This franchise isn't known for creative group names.)
Tumblr media
“L’Oreal: Because I’m not weak.”
The formerly incapacitated Sonic also managed to eventually break free from his captivity, and proceeded to do what he does best alongside his new friend. Infinite was having none of this, and so he made absolutely certain to... leave him alive. Despite Eggman's insistence that a freed Sonic could cause as much trouble as a freed Sonic could in every other situation since 1991, Infinite remained confident that he couldn't be beaten. Three guesses for how that turned out. The first two don't count.
He was serious about crushing the Resistance though, and together with Eggman, not only did they summon a whole army of clones, they also summoned an artificial sun that, upon reaching the ground, would ensure the Resistance would meet a terrible fate. Good always triumphs however, and the clones were fought, the sun was vanquished, and Infinite himself was defeated once and for all.
It was at this point that Eggman decided to reveal that Infinite was a sham, a distraction, a red herring. For all his power, Infinite was little more than a glorified mook the whole time. Infinite was never the doctor's endgame. He was. Infinite didn't even have true mastery over the Phantom Ruby... but he did.
Tumblr media
Death Chad Robot.
In just a few minutes, Eggman tapped into the power of the Ruby more than Infinite ever did, and overclocked it to turn his Doc Ock-looking mech into a beast. But through thick and thin (and a second Nega-Wisp Armor), Sonic and his ambiguously named friend teamed up to take the madman down, because we're Sonic Heroes.
The world was saved from further tyranny, and Eggman went on to either lose his memory or shrug it off to take part in racing spinoffs depending on the continuity. But Infinite - or rather, the jackal who called himself Infinite - remains absent. He could be alive. He could be dead. He could finally get a haircut. His fate is a mystery that we may never know the answer to. Maybe he's spending his retirement climbing the tallest of mountains.
The Design: Careful you don't cut yourself with all this edge.
Tumblr media
You could have gotten yourself an eyepatch for half the price.
Demonic eyes, dark colours, anime hair... he's a villain alright. Infinite's design is unashamed of itself. It knows it's ridiculous, and it goes all out with it, which - let's be frank - matches the character in general pretty reasonably. Funnily enough, I don't have much else to say about it. It's not my favourite character design in the world, but I can credit them for pioneering loudspeaker ears. And at least he's not a hedgehog. Or an echidna.
If you listen carefully, you can hear Shadow sighing in relief under the knowledge that he's no longer the edgiest guy in the room.
The Personality: What's an easy way to make a villain a villain? By making them pointlessly sadistic, of course.
Tumblr media
"You may call this the Sonic Chronicles soundtrack... in the brief moments that remain to your eardrums."
And I don't speak lightly when I say pointless. Infinite's penchant for sadism is actually treated as a character flaw, as it contributes heavily to his ultimate downfall. He wastes time by drawing out his kills, and his decision to leave his greatest foes alive because they're supposedly "not worth killing" bites him in the ass on more than one occasion. Even Eggman calls him out on his shitty decisions.
Tumblr media
"Don't get cocky with me, son. This ain't the Adventure Era anymore.”
And this ties in with how he is in general. Infinite, for all his delusions of grandeur and nihilistic waxing, is a bit of a fuck up. Him and his squad combined couldn't even take on Eggman on his own (albeit with a Phantom Ruby in his possession), and when the mask comes on, it becomes clear that he only defeated Sonic through the element of unfamiliarity. Once Sonic starts to know about him and fights him for real, Infinite doesn't rely on the Phantom Ruby nearly as well as he could. He has a jewel that can do all sorts of distortions, and all he can think to do with it is use basic lasers and blasts for the most part. He's a thug at the end of the day. A powerful thug, but a thug all the same.
Despite this, though it's only hinted here and there, it seems that he has an Inferiority Superiority Complex. His passionate response to Shadow calling him pathetic (ironically, he never actually said he was weak) goes without saying, but then there's his dramatic speeches about having no hope, and how you can't count on anyone, and blah blah blah eat a Snickers already.
The Execution: Much like Erazor Djinn, you may have gathered that this character has a lot in common with everyone's favourite Ice Age antique, Mephiles the Dark. Like Erazor, Infinite is a better (albeit flawed) take on Mephiles' schtick, but whereas Erazor better emulates the success that Mephiles tried to go for, Infinite better represents the failure that Mephiles actually is... right down to showing how Silver would react if he had actual brain cells.
Tumblr media
Above: Character development.
Hell, they both share the fate of getting swatted by Omega.
Tumblr media
Not bitter at all.
Anyway, to explain this requires some elaboration. I'm aware that a lot of what I've said about Infinite sounds negative, and that's not entirely untrue, since I'll be the first to admit that he could have been handled a little better, and fleshed out a bit more, especially with all the pre-release hype and attention he was given. At the same time however, he's still leagues above the likes of Mephiles, for one simple reason that we discussed previously: his incompetence is intentional.
Maybe not fully - the pre-Infinite breakdown probably wasn't meant to be as comedic as it ended up being - but you can't tell me his setbacks weren't there on purpose. Eggman lost the war because Infinite left his enemies alive and free. Eggman lost the war because Infinite clumsily left a Phantom Ruby replica behind. Eggman lost the war because Infinite kept messing around when he had better things to do, didn't know what to do other than blindly attack when the chips were down, and got disposed of with little fanfare by the doctor after having failed him enough times. Compare all this to Eggman himself in the same game, who despite being known for his childishness and occasional shortsightedness, had a lot of genuine foresight to share around, and went from backup plan to backup plan like it was nothing.
In other words, Infinite could be seen as a well-needed deconstruction of villains like Mephiles, and why they're not as great as they look at first glance. And in that respect, he's kind of a genius concept.
Tumblr media
“Ugh, MORE shitty friends...”
Infinite is a very divisive character, and I can see why. Alongside his far from perfect execution, many fans were expecting and hoping for a straight example of late 00's Sonic villains, in part because that's what the marketing and his infamous theme song set him up as and partly because '06 is now considered better than everything afterwards because Baldy McNosehair is literally oppressing all Sonic fans across the world. If you're like me on the other hand, and don't have the slightest unironic interest in those kind of villains, you can probably respect Infinite a little more for addressing the elephant in the room. And even though he is indeed flawed, I think most of that has to do with the wasted potential of the plot itself rather than anything inherently to do with Infinite's own character.
He's no Eggman, Erazor, Metal Sonic, or Hard-Boiled Heavies. But he's above Mephiles, Black Doom, Eggman Nega, and so many others who blend together after a while. Still, maybe someone should assist Shadow the next time he decides to insult somebody.
Crusher Gives Infinite a: Thumbs Sideways!

¦ 11 - 25 - 3226      Scrap Brain ¦
---
It was the clattering of teacups, the telltale sound of glass on glass, that snapped the hero out of his thoughts with a small jerk. It was only then he realized he had been on the receiving end of a worried look, not just from the one sitting across from him but the waitress who had just brought them both their tea. The latter seemed to think better of asking, merely setting the two cups down on the table before politely excusing themselves. The former did just the opposite.
“Is everything alright, Mr. Sonic?” Per usual, there was an innocence, an honest concern, in Cream’s voice that the hedgehog just couldn’t help but smile at.
“Everything’s fine, sorry about that. I was just...spacing out a little bit,” he told her, taking his cup from the middle of the table to set in front of him. As his fingers wrapped around the cup he could see something cautious in the rabbit’s eyes, a hesitation before she spoke again.
“You’ve been doing that a lot lately...” her tone was careful, her coffee-colored eyes glancing around them, to the other patrons of the café before settling on the hero again. “Is it because you’re still nervous about being out in public?”
It was a harmless question but the hero still frowned a little at it, an apprehension in his demeanor as he fought the urge to look around himself. He hadn’t realized it was that obvious but he figured there was no point in lying about it, though he kept his own voice relaxed. “A little, yeah, but ‘s not so bad here so don’t worry.”
That much wasn’t a lie either, and he was grateful that the small building was situated just on the outskirts of the city. It was where he and the rabbit often met for these little chats, just to catch up, though it had been months since they had been able to properly do it thanks to recent events and the hedgehog’s aforementioned wariness. It wasn’t that he didn’t enjoy being out like this, just that he had never thought it a good idea after everything that had happened. Things hadn’t cooled down as much as the hero would have hoped.
“Is it bad in other places?” Cream’s next question got a look from the hedgehog, like he didn’t quite understand but in reality he didn’t know how to answer that, and she continued by way of explanation. “Amy tells me that you’ve been mostly keeping to yourself ever since you left Knuckles’ home. Are things…okay in the village?”
“They are, yeah, surprisingly enough,” he assured, again more truth than anything to his answer as he smiled again, a warmth to it this time. “Cheesy as it sounds, and for all the stuff I’ve been through, the village has always been the one place where I feel…I don’t know, normal I suppose? Rosie’s seen t' that for years and she made doubly sure of that after…well, everything.”
“It’s because everyone there loves you, and they know how hard you’ve worked to save everyone. A lot of people realize that, I think,” Cream beamed, either not noticing or ignoring the brief flash of uncertainty in Sonic’s eyes. “How are things in the city? You stay in Scrap Brain a lot too, right?”
“Did Amy tell you that as well?” The moment he asked the hero could tell that was exactly what had happened and he made a mental note to talk to the pink hedgehog about what she talked about with other people. It wasn’t much of a problem with Cream, but it was better to be safe than sorry. Especially these days. Still, the lingering question brought silence with it, the hero doing his best to put on a reassuring smile. “Things in the city are…okay.”
Cream saw right through it, concern plastered on her face as she raised her cup to take a sip. She didn’t know if she was overstepping by wanting to continue their conversation, but she decided to risk it, softly asking, “so…not good?”
The hedgehog didn’t answer right away, much to the rabbit’s despair, his bright eyes lowering to his own cup as he thought about how to best respond. It occurred to him he could just fib, come up with some half-truth and move on, but he didn’t really see a point. Not just because Cream might know something wasn’t right, but because she was bound to find out sooner or later. Be it either from Amy or some random conversation between strangers, she would eventually find out that things weren’t all okay.
After the silence had gone on for a little too long, he sighed. His eyes didn’t raise, and his voice fell quiet but he did answer, albeit hesitantly. “They could be worse, but they could also be better. It’s…hard t' explain. People don’t hassle me or anything like that, and some of them go out of their way t' act civil enough but…”
Sonic stopped there, frowning as he tried to word things the right way. He didn’t want to make the rabbit worry, something that had already been long since accomplished, but he also didn’t know if there was a way around it. If he was going to be honest, the whole thing worried him as well and it had for the past few months. Maybe he was a fool for thinking, or hoping rather, that things would go back to some semblance of normal after the reconstruction began, when life started veering back on track. He expected people to be upset, and they rightfully should have been, but even he hadn’t expected the level of it that greeted him more than half the time he went out in public.
He thought he was imagining it at first but then he started to hear things, noticing people avoiding him, and that had confirmed his suspicions. The hero didn’t like it, which was why he looked off to the side to avoid Cream seeing the upset look in his eyes, but understood. Maybe he shouldn’t have, maybe he should have been trying to fix things instead of keeping to himself, but he couldn’t bring himself to and as his hands wrapped around the cup in front of him, the hero couldn’t even look at his reflection in the dark liquid.
“There’s still a look in everyone’s eyes when they see me, Cream. Like...most of them don’t know what t’ think anymore and the others…” another pause, this time with the hero’s eyes meeting her’s, a dull sorrow in them. “It’s like they’re scared.”
This time, it was Cream who fell silent. While they didn’t talk about it often, the rabbit knew that being held up to his title of ‘hero’ for so many years had taken its toll on the hedgehog in front of her. She wasn’t a fighter, wasn’t even a part of The Freedom Fighters or the hero’s immediate circle of friends, yet they had found a mutual friend in Amy, and soon realized they had a liking for the simpler things. There weren’t many people the rabbit could sit down with over a decent cup of tea and just chat, but Sonic had quickly filled that role once she had gotten enough courage to ask so many years ago and she knew neither of them regretted the decision.
But there had always been that one thing, that dull speck of something deep in his eyes that had grown so much over the years, that she had to wonder if he was really alright. After Robotnik had come back, after a handful of cities and towns had been destroyed and Grand Metropolis had fallen at the hands of Chaos, she knew things hadn’t been easy. Even if the good guys had won in the end there was still lasting damage and because Amy had been exhausted after the whole ordeal, Cream knew the same had to have gone for Sonic. Even now she could tell he still wasn’t quite right, and that was why it hurt her to hear what he said. And even worse that he was, technically, right.
The people were scared, but she didn’t have the heart to tell him that. She might have lived in a small town outside of Scrap Brain, away from the usual hustle and bustle, but word spread like wildfire. It hadn’t taken long after the final attack, after Chaos had disappeared for the rumors to start spreading. Some people, and Cream truly wanted to believe it was most, were thankful for what the hedgehog did and had truly been worried for him after what happened. There had been a lot of raw emotion after the fight in Grand Metropolis, a lot of people had been sad and had confided in each other, supported each other and the heroes who saved the city.
Others had done just the opposite.
Other people were angry, and Cream had never really known why. She hadn’t understood it and had asked her mother about it but even Vanilla hadn’t been able to give much of an answer. The best she could offer was that those people just didn’t understand what had happened and that they were upset on behalf of the people who had gotten hurt, who had lost things and families. Because Robotnik was gone, they had no one else to be mad at so they had picked Sonic as a scapegoat.
Cream didn’t know the whole story of what had happened there in the middle of the city, once The Freedom Fighters had arrived at the scene and tried to stop the demigod. Not even Amy had told her everything, but people were saying things. They were saying that the hedgehog was dangerous, of all things. Some even thought that he was the reason everything had happened in the first place, that he was the reason Robotnik had attacked so mercilessly due to the human wanting revenge for all his past failures.
She had never believed any of it. She had known Sonic for a while, ever since she had been six, and the one thing she was certain of was that Sonic was a good person. He would have been the first person to admit that he wasn’t perfect, but Cream was always right there to remind him that he always tried to make the best out of a bad situation, tried to make things better for everyone, and that was what counted. He helped people, had always put their needs before his own, and that’s what made him a hero in her eyes and so many other’s.
“Do you want to know I think?” A courtesy coated her voice as she looked at him, brown meeting green with a gentle smile forming beneath them and she reached out to take one of his hands. “I think people seem that way, that they might even be that way, because...you’re still a little scared and unsure yourself.”
To that, Sonic could give no response. He didn’t want to admit that she was right but a feeling in his gut, some small voice in his mind, was leaning in that direction. Something about it must have shown on his face because it was a few moments later when the rabbit’s smile lowered a notch, and she squeezed his hand before leaning back in her seat and her next words were something he was utterly thankful for.
“Let’s talk about something else, okay...?” The last thing Cream wanted was to ruin the hero’s day, or their time together. Luckily, she thought she had the perfect topic lined up and practically beamed as she looked at Sonic. “Did Amy tell you about school?”
It worked and the rabbit was rewarded with a smile from Sonic, who nodded in a proud way. As to be expected by now, Amy hadn’t been able to contain her excitement or keep the fact that Cream had decided to become a wildlife veterinarian a secret for very long and had told him not long after. “She mentioned it, yeah. Can’t say I’m surprised by your pick, but ’s fitting. She also mentioned something about getting you an internship, have you started that yet?”
“My first day will be after the holidays. Amy even offered to give me a place to stay so the commute isn’t so bad,” Cream explained, the excitement in her voice unmistakable. “I told her I don’t want to impose but even Tekno said it was okay so I think I’m going to take the offer, at least for a little while.”
The look on the hero’s face said he thought it was a good thing, even before he nodded. “If you ask me those two could use the distraction. Tekno’s been so busy overseeing things in Grand Metropolis an’ Amy’s still adjusting to her new position at that company of hers, if it wasn’t for each other I think those two would work themselves t’ the bone.”
If nothing else the two of them were ambitious which wasn’t a bad thing necessarily but, from his perspective on the whole thing, it didn’t seem like the pink hedgehog or canary got much time to breathe these days. Yet, at the same time, they seemed to thrive in that never-ending hustle and bustle so maybe it was simply how they preferred things. They always made time for each other and their friends so it easily could have been more unfavorable.
“They really are good for each other, aren’t they?” Cream’s voice cut across that thought and Sonic had to smile at the question. It had been a few months after the, literal, chaos of the last assault when the two roommates had finally come clean about their feelings for one another (something Sonic had always suspected but never actually brought up out of mutual respect). He had to admit they really were an ideal couple, not that he had expected anything less. What he hadn’t expected was the almost sly expression that took over the rabbit’s face a moment later as she looked him dead in the eye. “Kind of like you and Mina are, huh?”
“Very clever.” Try as he did to give the other a semi-scolding look the hedgehog just couldn’t manage it and merely shook his head, his grin all too evident. Much like Amy and Tekno, he and the mongoose had a long talk about what the future was going to hold and both had agreed they were tired of beating around the bush when it came to what they were and had taken the dive. The thought was enough to bring a warmth to his chest. “But I guess I can’t argue with that one, she’s been great with everything. Still not sure how I lucked out with that one.”
“Are you still staying with her?”
“Mostly, but I spend a few days here and there in the village too. If I didn’t I don’t think Rosie would take well t’ it after everything that happened,” he admitted, then shrugged casually. “Plus I like keeping Kintobor company when I can.”
Cream seemed to consider his answer, almost as if she wanted to ask about something else before settling with, “have you given any more thought about moving there? To Green Hill?”
“Yes and no. I’d like t’ don’t get me wrong, but...the time just doesn’t feel right yet.” Sonic didn’t really know how else to put it, honestly. He had always wanted to move back to his hometown once things had settled down, dreamed of it even, but now that the option was there something was holding him back from actually doing it. He didn’t know what it was, maybe it was some fear of rejection or something to do with everything that had happened, but it was there and no matter what he did it just didn’t want to go away.
Sonic knew, or rather hoped, it would disappear one of these days. When was anyone’s guess, but he was going to remain optimistic on that one and it seemed Cream was as well.
“That’s okay, you have plenty of time to think it over now, and I’m sure everything will fall into place when it’s meant to.” Again there was something about the rabbit’s smile that almost made it seem like everything was going to be okay in the end, like there was nothing to worry about. Sonic didn’t know if it was just his imagination or not, but there was no denying the conviction of the rabbit's next words. “It’s like Mama always says, you never have to force anything that’s meant to be and as long as you keep your head up, things will turn out okay.”
Sonic couldn’t say he was surprised to hear that, knowing that Vanilla, Cream’s mother, was just as kindhearted and wise as her daughter. It was no wonder where the younger rabbit had gotten it from, yet the whole notion brought an odd peace to the hero. What was going to happen would come into fruition eventually, it was his outlook on those events that was going to make all the difference.
In this case, just maybe, Cream’s words were ones the hero would take to heart.

The X-People: DP Degrees of BS
Frickin Phoenix!
Tumblr media
(What does that even mean? “Every hero has a DARK side?” She kills people! Are all of our heroes murderers? - but I’ll get to that later.)
I'm mad! That's right, people! I'm mad at MYSELF! Why? Well, I could have taken the kids to go see "The Secret Life of Pets 2", so we could laugh our asses off (Idk what kids I'm talkin about - just randomly picking kids up off the streets and taking them to see movies... prob best I didn't do that).
I could have seen something cultured like "Late Night" or "THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANSISCO"; which I admit is a stupid title, but it seems like it's a good movie. But, no, people! My comic book geekiness would not allow it!
Instead I went to see this bullshit right here - “X-Men: Dark Phoenix”.
Tumblr media
Don't look at me that way, Sansa! You know dag gon well this movie is some ol' bullshit!
You know! The rest of your acting squad knows, the director knows, the writers know - I knew from the first trailer! I knew from the first time they announced that they were taking another crack at a cinematic Phoenix story. Why?? Cuz we've done this before! Yep!
Tumblr media
There it is! - and it was terrible!
What’s going on with that poster? Apparently, they didn’t have any confidence in that movie either. Why is Wolverine running at me like Sonic the Hedgehog?
Tumblr media
I tried to find a better poster, but...
Tumblr media
Here they look like they’re posing in some 80′s rock video. TAKE THAT STAND:)
I was mad back then with the first trailer, because I knew that this moment would come. And I actually really liked the first two movies of these particular X-Men. It was Apocalypse that ruined everything.
Tumblr media
People thought that movie was so bad, that it erased all the good that this franchised has done (even going back to the older X-Men):
The ground-breaking 1st movie (tho it prob doesn't hold up),
Tumblr media
(Creepy old Magneto is coming for dat ass!)
Wolverine
Tumblr media
(it's hard to imagine anyone playing him better than Hugh Jackman. And he should have won an award for how cut he got... and he was so modest. If I ever  end up looking like that, WHEW! - ladies look out:),
I loved Patrick Stewart as Prof. X, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender's intense hot & frigid bromance (though we never got our make-out seen:), Quicksilver (man, I wish we could get more of him), "Logan" (excellent comic book movie), and I'm not sure if we'd have Deadpool without them ruining that first Wolverine movie. Not to mention that they marketed the hell out of this movie franchise and made so much money! But, then this guy showed up and effed it all to hell!
Tumblr media
("Everything they built will FALL... ")
- you ain't lyin, jack!
And while that movie was terrible, it wasn't as bad as everyone said. Bullshit sure, but... there are different degrees of bullshit. Apocalypse was forgettable BS, sometimes there's BS that makes us laugh, or think, or cry - what type of bullshit will Dark Phoenix be? -  Let's take a look:
This movie kicks off with the X-Men in space. Yep! SPACE! Since when are the X-Men astronauts? Which movie did they get training for any of that? How did they build an X-Jet for space travel? Did they learn it on YouTube? And even if that were the case, how's the government allowing this? If a group of talented minorities built a functional space craft, do you think President Trump would allow them to come and go as they please? Shiiiiiii In the movie they don't even test it first. Xavier just says that they'll be fine, and sends the kids off.
I think that there needs to be an investigation. Prof. X is trying to kill these kids. He keeps sending them on missions that they shouldn't come back from:
X-Men: "But, professor, we don't know how to disarm a bomb!"
Xavier: "You'll be fine."
X-Men: "But, professor, the X Jet isn't built for deep sea exploration, we don't even know where we're going!"
Xavier: "Y'all will figure it out."
Then, as they come back, he's counting to see if they all made it - "Ten kids left, and coming back, I count... ten DAMMIT! But, wait, one is injured... doesn't look like he'll pull through. YES! (as he drinks some bourbon - which he does at an alarming rate in this movie... prob to block out all the kids he has killed).
While we're on the topic of him - did the movie "Split" ruin James McAvoy's take on Prof X for anybody else? This is all I kept seeing when he was on camera.
Tumblr media
But, as you know, cuz they did this exact plot in "X-Men: Last Stand" Jean Grey gets possessed by some space entity while they're up there, and becomes Phoenix.
Tumblr media
Jean (played by Sophie Turner, who actually does a good job) is found to have done something horrible. Xavier (and this is no spoiler, cuz again X-Men: Last Stand") blocks out the bad stuff she has done to try to protect her, this eventually wears off, and now we get DARK
Tumblr media
...wait, sorry.
Now we get DARK PHOENIX!
There we go!
Tumblr media
(”Where’s my money?!”)
Now, Jessica Chastain is in this as well seen here, experimenting with bleach,
Tumblr media
who's leading a group of aliens to manipulate Jean (I'll get to them later). But, if JC is in the house, you can be sure that a women's rights message will be in there somewhere (#drinkinggame) And BOOM, there it was - "Don't let some MAN in a chair tell you what you are? - what you can and can not be! Don't let him controoool you!"
Tumblr media
I'm all for girl power, buuuuuut she HAS been on a bit of a carnage streak, and she has been killing people, annnnnnd isn't Jessica Chastain also trying to control her? But, imma let all that go... what do I know?? :)
I gotta be honest, I was digging the first half of this movie. They were capturing everything I love about the X-Men: social issues, political issues, teen struggles. They have lots of real drama going on amongst themselves. There are times when you'll cheer the X-Men on and times when you'll agree with some of the humans that THEY GOTZ TO GO! I love the flaws of the X-Men; it makes them relatable. I even love the struggle with having so much power, and yet having to try to walk a line of morality - which they suck at btw.
The professor sucks at it the most, which made me kinda sad, actually. BUT, to be fair, he has the power to control people's minds... would any of us with that power be able to consistently resist certain temptations?? Def not giving him a pass though. He does a lot of messed up stuff (some things they draw attention to, and others that they don't). Some things that made me cringe, even though MOST of what he was doing was out of love. I can't depend on none of my fave leaders anymore - not even the fictional ones.
We were getting into some deep stuff! BUT, then it was as if some big shot walked on the set and reminded them that they have a "Blow shit up" quota to meet, and that the plot points were slowing them down. Soooooooo, they burn the script and start blowing things up. Some people might say "Praphit, this is a comic book movie, how much script can you expect?" If this were 20 years ago, I'd agree.
Plus, it's more the fact that nothing makes any sense at this point.
Magneto (who's always the voice of reality in these movies, in my opinion) wants to kill Jean (for very good reasons), but he knows that he can't take Phoenix by himself, so why is he trying? He's a smart dude; why not come up with a better plan? Prof X wants to talk to Jean, to reason with her... the problem with that is that they just tried that a few days ago, and that couldn't have gone any more terribly than it did. The aliens in this movie (which lack all personality btw), who's objective is to control Jean, also know that they can't really do that or take her out (which was plan B), so... what the hell are we doing? The aliens are supposed to be the smart ones!
Prof X should have just controlled everyone's minds, and played a big game of immoral chess to take Jean out - that would have been a cool movie. But, this (though the effects are VERY COOL:) simply became a shoot-out! Not to mention, that right before all of this awesome, but confusing damage takes place, they have a big speech about restraint and not doing harm. Literally, a minute later, the X-Men are blowing buses up!
But, all of that is not even what makes this movie bullshit (grade: D+ btw). What makes this movie bullshit is the fact that it's the last one before Disney takes over.
You'd think that they would have given it their best, so that they can go out making us miss them! But, it felt like half way through the movie the team was told that this is all over, and that Mickey Mouse is coming to collect, but instead of going out with their best, they said to themselves "bleep it" and mailed-it-in.
The way that the final battle scene ends doesn't make any sense. It's one of those scenarios where "If you could do that... why didn't you do that earlier and save more destruction?" and a lil bit of "Well, if you had THAT much power, then none of these other altercations should have even been close."
The way it ends after that too! Man! It's like they just fast forwarded through the parts they didn't feel like acting out. This is the last one, people! Just lazy!
Tumblr media
Yeah you!
I've got a spoiler, sooooo if you don't want it, skip through the text after Patrick Stewart - and start reading again when you see his handsome face again:)
Tumblr media
(this is back when I learned to love this man)
So, Jean is... gone (possibly dead), and the X-Men name the school after her "Institute of Jean Grey" or something like that. Also, Prof X steps down (maybe due to guilt of his misatkes with Jean, who knows for sure, cuz they didn't act it out), and leaves Beast in charge in with the other teen X-Men to instruct the 'young kids at the school. "Other TEEN X-Men" Did they just make these kids professors? And what qualifies Beast (at this stage in his life) to run the school? Plus, Jean Grey was kind of a murderer wasn't she (and this wasn't a secret from the rest of the world)? Come on,kids, let me sign you up for "Ted Bundy's School for gifted youngsters" Would you be onboard for that? Hell no!
Tumblr media
(Here’s PS fresh off a bender. “I promise, Timmy, I’ll try to think about never touching the sauce again, but this hair says that I will.”)
So... I'd say, entertaining bullshit. The effects (especially) at the end are great! But, the rest... and to go out like this... ugh.
There's a cool quote in here from Mystique (played by J.Law) who clearly didn't want to be there. It was a quote about how the women in the X-Men seem to be sticking their necks out and saving the day way more than the men, and that  maybe Xavier should change their name to “The X-Women”. I thought that was not only funny, but a damned good point. I say do it!
I'd love it if you had a a big strong manly man of the team go ahead of the action and stand up to the enemy, and when asked "Who are you?" he replies
Tumblr media
"We're the X-Women."

My personal story for Silver and Blaze
Tumblr media
((This is going to be the story I’m using for the main RPs behind these two. Keep this in mind.
Let’s start from Silver’s beginning. As you know, he’s from 200 years in Sonic’s future. What Silver’s future is like has been inconsistent across the board. Sonic 06 and Generations says it’s post apocalyptic, but according to Sonic Colors, it’s a bright one. Well since technically Sonic 06 isn’t canon, but Crisis City is still around, I will go with this.
Tumblr media
Crisis City was originally Silver’s home. Silver would tend to go about and greet people with smiles and waves, but little does he know that they’re secretly afraid of him because of his powers. He didn’t mind though as he spends time playing around with his powers a bit or just reading stories.
Tumblr media
That is until the day the city was attacked by Dr. Nega Robotnik (A.K.A Eggman Nega). Nega has been confirmed to be originally from Silver’s timeline, despite the fact he debuted in Sonic Rush. We’ll get to that later. Nega wanted to achieve success in robotics along the lines of his other ancestors, most notably Professor Gerald Robotnik. However, his projects were rejected due to the fact that he’s a descendant of the infamous Dr. Ivo Robotnik (A.K.A Dr. Eggman). Because of this, Nega decided to accomplish what his ancestor failed to do, which is dominate the world. After creating his robotic army, he sets sights on random cities, among of which is Crisis City. Knowing about the attack, Silver appeared to try to fend off the robots. Even though he fought well, even taking down one of the more powerful robots, Silver couldn’t save the city due to the fact that he’s just starting out in a battle, let alone being a hero in general, and that Nega’s mindset is (”If I can’t have it, no one can!”) and basically used hidden bombs and flamethrower bots to destroy the city, thus making Silver watch everything reduced to flames. Yeah unlike Ivo, Nega won’t hesitate to destroy everything if he finds out he can’t have his own way, regardless of the consequences alongside it.
Tumblr media
Wanting to become stronger and inspire a new generation of freedom fighters, Silver left his home to train. During his travels, he came across Angel Island. As he explored, he soon ran into a robot that suspected him for trespassing and trying to steal the master emerald, and attacked Silver. Silver did managed to damage the robot a bit, but it was no ordinary bot. It wasn’t until the bot was commanded to stop before the fight ended. That’s when Silver met the guardian of the Master Emerald...
Tumblr media
Shadow the Hedgehog. Yup, both him and the bot the Silver was fighting, E-123 Omega, are still around and became the new protectors of the Master Emerald after retiring from G.U.N and Knuckle’s inevitable death since keep in mind, this is over 200 years into the future. To me it also makes sense for Shadow to do this since he was born with chaos energy, he might have at least some connection with the master emerald, especially if Knuckles showed him the ropes before his passing. Silver points out that he meant no trouble and he just came to the island to train himself as Nega has begun his destruction/domination of the world. Both Shadow and Omega had a feeling a new threat would be approaching at some point later in their long lives. Shadow had watched Silver fight Omega and decided that his powers could be of use. Therefore, he decided to help train him to hone his abilities. Eventually, Silver became ready to fight back against the doctor, however only on his own as Silver and Omega prioritize themselves with the master emerald. They still communicate with each other with earpieces leftover from their time spent with G.U.N. They gave him Rouge’s old one because she’s...well...you know.
Tumblr media
Think of it as like Sonic Adventure where Silver just goes around doing missions set for him by Shadow, Batman Beyond style. Eventually, Silver managed to catch up to Nega and was about to bring him to justice. Unfortunately, Eggman Nega managed to escape using a new personal warping invention he made and used it to go back in time for a new plan, to erase the mistakes his ancestor made, which leads to the events of Sonic Rivals 1 and 2. Silver comes back to Angel Island to report to Shadow and Omega.
Tumblr media
Knowing full well about what might happen if he succeeds, Shadow decides to use chaos control to send Silver back in time to stop him before it’s too late, similar to how it’s done in Sonic 06. He also warns Silver to beware of his past self and not reveal how he ends up in the future because he knows that his past self isn’t the most cooperative person to deal with. Heck, even now that’s a bit of a stretch. He also gives Silver a special signal device to let Shadow know when it’s time to bring him back since their communicators won’t work when they’re that far back in the past.
Tumblr media
After the events of Sonic Rivals, Nega managed to escape to formulate a new plan to change the future. Fortunately, Silver managed to find out about it and Shadow sends him through time once again, thus proceeding the events of Sonic Rivals 2. At the end of Rivals, Silver and his companion, Espio, left Nega alone in a portal after foiling his plans with his ifrit,
Tumblr media
which is pretty much the game’s version of Iblis, minus his other half, Mephiles. That being said, I have heard someone theorize ifrit using its power to transport Eggman Nega to the Sol Dimension which would lead to the events of Sonic Rush, in which case...sure. I’ll go along with that. Now we get to the part where Silver and Blaze meet for the first time. After a while of helping rebuild the destruction Nega left in the future, Silver couldn’t help but shake the feeling that Nega is still out there somewhere. At some point, he returns to Angel Island to discuss it with his mentor, Shadow. Shadow admits that he doesn’t deny the possibility, especially if he recalls Sonic ever telling him about his travels in the Sol Dimension. He would probably put 2 and 2 together that the Nega there is the same person from here. Knowing how dangerous he is, Silver doesn’t want another world to suffer because of him. That’s when Shadow decides to bring out a secret treasure that he kept with him for years in secret...
Tumblr media
the phantom ruby. Shadow points out that with the power of the emeralds (especially with the master emerald present), he can send Silver across time, but with the phantom ruby, he can transport to anywhere in reality, even across dimensions. He and Omega kept it secret because even if one day they were to fail at protecting the master emerald, this could be used as a way to bring it back. That and they knew what might happen if it fell into the wrong hands as well. Like before, Shadow tells Silver to use his signal device once the mission is over, especially in this case where he would be sent across both time and space to reach Nega since he would still technically be in Sonic’s timeline while in the Sol Dimension, so you can imagine it’s going to take quite the amount of energy.
Tumblr media
Silver manages to end up on one of the islands on Blaze’s home world in the Sol Dimension. At first, he takes interest in the wildlife around him, seeing how similar or different they are compared to the ones at Angel Island, or at least at home before Nega’s attack. Soon, he remembers he has to focus and soon comes across a town/village (take your pick. I haven’t actually played Sonic Rush. I’m gathering info about it from online, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I’m trying my best, okay?). He starts going around and ask people about Nega to see if he’s around.
Tumblr media
Some people pointed out that they have either seen him or at least heard of him, but they’re not sure about where he is now since at the end of Sonic Rush Adventure, he was blown up after being defeated by their princess and her blue hedgehog companion. Silver has met Sonic before at this point at least once thanks to Sonic Rivals, so he does wonder if it’s the same guy. Regardless, this does confirm that Nega has been here for quite some time, but the question remains is whether or not he’s still around. Before he has much time to think about it though, pirates attack the place. And with Silver being Silver, he wastes no time to deal with them before leaving to the next nearby island. He basically starts searching around for clues, but with no luck in terms of actual concrete proof that he’s still here. That is until he comes across a huge mech threatening a young girl. Nega’s symbol on the bot was proof that it was one of his and not Ivo’s. While the girl isn’t afraid at all, she is clearly having a bit of trouble, so Silver goes in to help out. The severely injured mech barely escapes to make a report back to where it came from. The girl was thrilled by Silver’s powers and kept asking him random questions like who he was, where he came from, how he got his powers, ect. It didn’t take long for Silver to use his powers to hold her in place so she could calm down. Silver points out that he’s from another world, which prompted her to ask if he knew Sonic. As stated before, they have met, but they don’t really know each other all that much.
Tumblr media
The girl then introduces herself as Marine, future adventurer extraordinaire. Silver says it was nice meeting her, but he has to continue his search for Nega. Marine says she wants to help Silver find him since she was with Sonic and others when they fought him before. At first, Silver was against it since he while even though he’s not against the idea of relying on others, he didn’t feel it’s right to get people from this dimension involved with what he believes to be his mess. He does end up agreeing in the end though once Marine mentioned that she has a boat and can help him explore the world like a guide. That he knew someone like her is going to tag with him anyway.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile at the hidden base, Nega notices that one of his mechs has been thrashed rather quickly, since it hasn’t been that long since he sent this one out. As he inspects the damage, the mech shows a recording of what happened. The reveal of Silver being in this dimension shocked him, as he has no clue on how he got here nor how he figure out that he was here to begin with. Regardless, his nemesis is hunting him down, and he won’t tolerate another failure. He sends all the bots he created on high alert and to track down Silver. He is now wanted, dead or alive. Heck, I’ll even come up with a quote for it.
Tumblr media
source
“I don’t care if you have to burn down every forest on every island to bring him out. FIND. ME. THAT. HEDGEHOG!!!”
Tumblr media
source
Once they got to the next island, it didn’t take long before they were attacked by pirates again, who are after Silver for the bounty placed on him by Nega if they managed to get him. After defeating one of the pirate leaders, Silver came across a strange gem that was left behind. Even though it appeared different to the super emeralds on Angel Island, he can still feel some form of power from it. That’s when a person comes in, demanding that he hands over the gem to her. At first, Silver was reluctant as to why he should, but the person said that her responsibility is to keep those safe. After hearing that, he does so, much to her surprise. Silver points out that she’s probably the guardian of the emeralds here and knows better than to get in her way. That and he doesn’t really need them since his only priority is going after Nega. Once she finds out that he knows Nega, she questions him on who he is and he introduces himself similarly to how he did so with Marine. Even the part about not really knowing Sonic all that well. Silver decided that while it was nice meeting her, it was time for him to leave and rendezvous back with Marine. Blaze was still curious about him, so she decided to follow behind. It wasn’t until Marine ran past Silver and hugged Blaze that he realized he was being followed. While Blaze is happy to see Marine again, she still questions Silver about how he knows about Nega and why he’s after him. Silver tells her that he’s on a mission to bring him back to his world now that he found out that he’s been hiding here for so long. Blaze is still a bit suspicious, but Marine tells her that he’s a decent guy and they should help him hunt down Nega as she knows full well he’s up to no good again. Blaze agrees for now, but she will be keeping an eye on him. This is getting longer than expected so, I’ll hold the rest off for another part later on.))

Mikunology File #5: Hatsune Miku
So here I am again, finally. Time for some more info dumping, but this time for a single character instead of an aspect of the verse or story.
Since Miku’s birthday recently passed, and I haven’t really done much to expand on some characters, I thought I’d make a Mikunology file based solely on a character and decided to start with our wonderful blue-green-haired protagonist.
This is a VERY LONG ONE, so if you’re interested enough to read to the end let me just say that I am virtually sending you a hug. Info under the cut.
So, as mentioned, Hatsune Miku (codename CV01) is the humble protagonist of the story of Vocal Android, as well as the instigator of the entire plot from her coming into existence. First in the line of Crypton Laboratories’ Character Vocal Series and supposedly the first fully functional completely humanlike android in existence (spoiler alert: she isn’t, but that’s a story for another day), within the world she lives in she’s a pretty hecking big deal. Naturally, this ends up causing her equal parts harm and good, giving her friends, fame, and recognition all over the planet but also bringing her into the sight of some messed-up, incredibly corrupt people who are quite interested in either her destruction or her exploitation.
Personality/Portrayal
I’ve discussed how I see Miku’s personality before, but I feel now if the perfect time to go further into depth on it.
Here, Hatsune Miku is a cheerful, friendly and perpetually nice girl with a heart for music and a strong sense of justice. Miku is as sweet as she appears, and is often concerned with the wellbeing of everyone, whether it be friends, family, or fans. Miku loves nothing more than to make people happy with her singing, and considers it an act that fulfills her purpose best as a Vocaloid. She can get along with virtually anyone, and can spare a spot of sympathy for just about everyone (at least, most of the time). That said, Miku is also known for being a bit on the silly side--as nice as she is, she can be very clueless and slow on the uptake compared to everyone else. She always tries her best to understand, though.
Even with her friendliness however, Miku is sometimes rather stressed by the world around her. Having to juggle a career as a pop idol, a big sister to her fellow Vocaloids, a life as a high school student, and a responsibility as a superheroine, she tends to be overwhelmed by circumstances when things get rough (enough that you could call her neurotic sometimes). This stress can occasionally make her afraid to make mistakes, and thus cause her to run away or avoid problems to support her own mentality. She also can have a rather explosive temper because of her constantly bottling her feelings up. But, she still has a large drive to do well and be efficient to serve her purpose (making others happy) and will stop at nothing to achieve what needs to be done when she puts her mind to it. She just needs a little incentive, that's all.
And lastly, Miku is known for her loyalty to her friends and her world. Even with her own anxieties, she makes her best effort to put others before herself and dreads the idea of anyone coming to harm because of her. She loves to give encouragement to her fans and fellow Vocaloids, and strives to use her own abilities to keep the world at peace. In all reality, all Miku desires is to bring an even brighter future.
Abilities
Gotta talk about this, right? Now truthfully, this list may change in the future, because this plotline is constantly developing and new ideas are always coming to me. But as of current, this are her current list of basic abilities.
Her singing voice. Obviously, Miku’s greatest ability is the power of her own voice. Being created to sing, Miku was granted the ability to do more with her voice beyond what an average human can do. This includes amplifying or quieting it, manipulating her tone of voice, throwing her voice, or pitching it up or down. After acquiring her Append, V3, V4, English, and eventually Chinese voicebanks, she can also switch between voices or languages at any time. Her ability to sing loudly has been perfect for concerts, but can also constitute as a weapon. Later on, she can power herself up with the strength of her music.
Flight. Miku is also able to fly, and can do so at decently fast speeds. I like to think that she probably started out with your standard “rocket boots”, if you will, but upon her upgrades from V3 and V4 she switched to anti-gravity. Despite being rather clumsy with it at the start, Miku is pretty swift and acrobatic when it comes to flying--it probably helps that her twintails can provide wind resistance.
Durability. Miku is incredibly durable, much more so than your normal person. Since she is a robot, and isn’t made out of bones or flesh, she is more than capable of taking a hit and usually requires quite a lot to so much as truly render her out of commission. She is NOT bulletproof or completely invulnerable, however, but as long as she’s capable of moving around it’s quite hard to do her in. Also, if she DOES get considerably injured, it’s perfectly possible to fix her up again. (Note: Just to say, though, while Vocal Android can get cartoony at times, these characters do NOT follow “easily detachable robot parts”.)
Learning capability and musical knowledge. Her brain is computerized, so it doesn’t take long at all for Miku to learn something; this especially applies to her knowledge in music and dance. If someone shows her how to do something, it usually takes very minimal tries for her to get it down. This often comes in handy for learning songs, playing instruments, or dance routines, and has also helped her in copying abilities. However, while she is a fast learner, whether she actually UNDERSTANDS the material she’s learning is a different story.
Download. Miku is also capable of downloading her consciousness or data within her into a computer. While downloaded, she can also take form as a program or virtual entity on the computer and can act within cyberspace as she pleases. Additionally, as a precaution, she actually regularly backs her memories and personality into a separate computer in case her physical self were to come to harm.
Module usage. Thanks to a strange incident, Miku is also one of the few capable of using Modules, special “power-ups” of sorts that can change her appearance and give her special powers. Module powers vary greatly and can often be wild cards, and each one has a specific time limit based on how powerful they are, but they always help her in a cinch.
Equipment
Of course, Miku also has various equipment to help her on her various escapades. Once again, this list is open to change.
Her arm sleeves. Miku’s most common equipment. Not only are they a vital part of her trademark outfit, but Miku’s sleeves are embedded with computers that organize her data and allow her to access songs, information, video-call, and switch voices. Her system menu can also be accessed via her sleeves and she can be shut down or switched on with them.
Headphones. Then there’s Miku’s headphones. While of course they can function as regular headphones and often do, they also function as a another “off/on” button, and also can allow Miku to call or receive calls from her teammates or from the facility.
Leek and Leek Gun. Unsurprisingly, Miku always has a leek on her, either for snacking or for a good comical smacking (although she can do some real smacking, too). Also, courtesy of Gumi, she was given the Leek Gun, a dual-fire mini-launcher that looks like a leek. She doesn’t always use it but to say she’s fond of it is an understatement.
Megaphone. Insert “Love is War” reference here. Miku also commonly uses megaphones, as a way to amplify herself further and sometimes as way to direct her voice more properly. Before anyone asks, however, she has used a gun similar to Megaphone Gun from Ultra Despair Girls once.
Microphone. And of course, a singer like Miku always needs a microphone. Aesthetically, she prefers the ones that come with stands, never mind that they tend to make good staves.
Bonus Headcanons
Random extra stuff since I don’t know what else to put here!
Miku likes to cook, but tends not to be very good at it due to her innate ability to be easily distracted.
While she can play a multitude of instruments, she has a particular affinity for the guitar, synthesizer, and bass.
She loves video games, particularly the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
She doesn’t have a favorite song necessarily, but Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru has a place in her heart for being one of her earliest hits.
She likes sports, but is an utter klutz when she tries to play them. She's good at cheerleading, though!
Contrary to what some may think, she actually is pretty comfortable with her robotic existence. To say she doesn’t ever wonder what it would be like to be human would be a lie, but she doesn’t at all mind what she is. As long as she’s treated with respect, she’s cool.
She’s secretly the biggest freaking nerd ever
Inspiration Songs
Songs I used as a basis for my portrayal of Miku are: “39 Music!”, “Anger”, “Innocence”, “Miku”, “Mikunologie”, “SING&SMILE”, “Unfragment”, “Yellow”, “Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru”, “News 39″, “Koisuru Vocaloid”, “My Time”, and “The Bounce from Zero to Infinity”. For those curious, of course.

YAAU - Chapter eleven - Breather
The foggy morning clouds that hung low into the forest of Angel Island along with the last raindrops glittering in the light of the sun that shone behind the clouds, left a fairytale like scenery on the mystical place. Rain had been coming down non-stop for the last 24 hours until it finally stopped pouring down this morning. A red echidna was sitting on the steps of a familiar staircase. He was soaked, but didn’t seem to care since he was used to it. He was the guardian of the Master Emerald and had been for a really long time. It was a job he was proud at and he felt responsible for it. “Hey there, Knuckles.” A cheerful voice resounded through the early, fresh, yet damp morning air and the echidna opened his eyes. “Good morning Toma.” “I’m sorry you had such a storm during your shift, man.” The echidna shrugged his shoulders in a laconic way. “I’ve been through worse.” The other person took in the image of Knuckles’ attitude in admiration. “Anyway: you’re off duty. You can go home and rest for a couple of days.” Knuckles rose from his position on the stairs and stretched his legs and arms since they were cramped from sitting in the same position for a long time. He felt his butt and feet tingle from the lack of a decent blood circulation, waited it bit for the feeling to come back to it and walked down the stairs while saluting his co-worker that took over. When the war against the A.R. started four years ago, a feeling of nationalism lit a spark in many Mobians’ hearts, wanting to protect their planet, their freedom and their way of living. As a result of that, a lot of Mobians started to gain interest in the history of their planet and the many legends that were connected to it and so it happened that a small group of young Mobians began to spend more time on Angel Island. At first, they were just visiting the island out of interest, but as time moved on, their interest in the floating island turned into dedication. The group eventually built some houses for themselves and settled on the island, something the guardian of the island wasn’t particularly happy about. He lectured them about this being a sacred place and told them to get off the island. The group refused to leave and told the guardian about their wish to contribute to the safety of the Master Emerald. Knuckles warded off their intention of doing so, but the members of the group continued to live there. The red echidna was about to resort to violence to make sure that they’d leave but they refused to fight him and he left them alone, hoping that they’d get bored in the end, but they turned out to have a very strong will and dedication to stay. They gradually got involved with Knuckles’ business around the Master Emerald by helping him out. In the end they gained the guardian’s trust and they proved him worthy of contributing to keeping the Master Emerald safe and they came up with a schedule that showed who was supposed to do what task around the island, including guarding the altar. And so, the hotheaded Knuckles headed to his second home on South Island to spend some time with his friends. After the hedgehogs clashed two weeks ago, things had been stable and everyone was able to breathe again. Even though, the situation left its’ scars on everybody in their own way. Sonic and Shadow had been going to individual therapy to learn to cope with the things that happened and it wasn’t easy. Both of them kept having nightmares and Sonic was impressed by how dark things could get and how vulnerable he’d felt. He had been confronted with the fact that he was perishable and it was a scary feeling. Tails had been worried about Sonic and was scared off by the fact that even Sonic could be broken. His brother, the one he looked up to in so many ways. Broken. Even now it sometimes still seemed surreal. Knuckles just kept doing his own thing but had been thinking about everything that happened the last weeks on his own, reflecting by himself as he guarded the Master Emerald. As for Shadow: there were times where he’d freeze up at someone’s touch, especially in the dark and he zoned out from time to time. He would grow tired easier than before and Amy was having nightmares herself as well about losing the ones she cherished most. On top of that there was Jayde. Or actually: there wasn’t, because she had shown very little interest in Amy during this disaster and Amy was fed up with her. Luckily she was able to spend a lot of time with her friends right now and she was happy to be with Shadow again. She looked over her shoulder and caught a glimpse of him and Sonic as they were practicing new tricks with their Chaos energy as he agreed to do so earlier, but it was proven once again that he wasn’t a patient being, something Sonic and he had in common. To be able to do this, Sonic and he had to get back their Chaos energy in the first place since it was temporarily being stored in Tails’ translucent box due to the gotten out of hand-fight. “Okay, guys. Let’s do this!” Tails stated at Sonic and Shadow through the speakers in the training room the young fox had designed several months ago. It had been his special project and he’d finished it a couple of months ago. He created a device, similar to virtual reality helmets – only he had connected the device, shaped like a chip, with their contacting devices, connected to their inhibitors. When he sent out a request to the device, the receiver would have to accept it and when they did, they were being sent into a room that Tails could redesign over and over again. This time the room was plain white and had grey walls, existing from special fibers that had the ability to ward of energy, so that the Chaos Energy would not leave this very room. “Let’s roll” Sonic added and Shadow nodded in agreement. “I’ll open the box on the count of three. We’ll have to separate the energy first. One. Two. Three.” The box opened and nothing happened, leaving Sonic somewhat confounded, Shadow ready for everything to happen and Tails suspicious. “Is this even the right box, Tails?” He asked after nothing happened in a minute or so. “Of course it is.” “Doesn’t seem like it to m-“ Suddenly the box exploded and the energy squirted around the room at high speed and they could see the mixture of red and blue Chaos Energy aimlessly flying through the room, bouncing at the walls. It gained speed with every hit on the wall and reacted to the hedgehog´s readiness to attack it by becoming more aggressive.   “Ready?” “You bet!” The hedgehogs locked eyes and nodded in agreement without phrasing their strategy as they didn’t need to and never had. They closed their eyes, lowered their heart rate, opened their palms and put pressure on them to draw in their energy, but it was reluctant to separate. It shaped itself like a ball and spindashed at them and they jumped away to avoid it. “It’s copying our attacks.” “Been there, done that. Follow my lead.” Sonic shouted at Shadow  trying to overcome the noise from the crackling, aggressive energy. Something the blue blur learnt from battling against Emerl, was that it might help if they switched while attacking it so it wouldn’t be able to copy multiple attacks at once.  Sonic jumped forward, aiming for it, with a clenched fist. “NOW!” Shadow jumped before him and kicked it into a corner, but it bounced back at him, smashing him to a corner himself. Standing up again, Shadow had enough. “Let me try something, Sonic.” “What are you thinking of?” “CHAOS CONTROL!” At that sound, time stopped and he signaled something to Sonic. They both attacked the energy, counted down from ten and made sure to touch the energy that was theirs. On the count of zero the energy was absorbed back into them with quite a shock and smashed each of them into a different corner of the room. Tails brought them back into reality and Shadow started teaching Sonic new tricks with their Chaos energy. “I’m glad it worked out in the end,” Miles stated, thinking back at how they settled things with the Chaos energy. “Totally. The odds are with us for once,” Amy added. “Not like that, faker!” Her attention was drawn to the hedgehogs again. A groan escaped the blue hedgehog’s mouth as Shadow snored at him in a fierce way. Yes, he wanted to learn those tricks Shadow pulled off before, but not like this. Shadow was getting on his nerves. “First, you step back, holding your right hand in a punching position and your left hand near your chest. Yes- then you step forward and draw the circle with the right hand and-.” “Hey there, guys!” “Do not interfere with our training.” Shadow replied abrupt to the red echidna’s greeting, who frowned and the others that were on the porch of Tail’s house, playing cards. “Hey there, Knuckles!” Sonic called. “Focus, Sonic!” “SHADOW the Hedgehog! Stop being an ass, right now!” Amy shouted at Shadow. “Hmph.” The black hedgehog folded his arms and ignored his girlfriends’ commentary- an unwise thing to do. “Mind your own business, Amy”, he added. Amy grunted at him. Sonic drew the young woman’s attention and signaled something to her which made her smile. “One more time So-“ Shadow wasn’t able to finish this sentence for he was knocked over and shoved over the ground by a powerful gust. Crawling up he looked agitated, an expression he was showing often. Amy giggled at him. “Now, how was that?” Sonic phrased in an amused way. “Very funny.” “I thought it was funny.” His girlfriend said. “Say it like you mean it.” Sonic held out a hand towards Shadow while proudly smiling at him. The black hedgehog gave him a sarcastic glance, grabbed Sonic’s hand and rose. Amy had walked towards them and wrapped her arms around Shadow from behind, who stiffened up and seemingly remained stoic at the public display of her affection. “Shall we go?” She asked him. “Go where?” “What do you mean? You were the one who wanted to take me somewhere tonight.” “Heh? Uh... Oh! Right! Let's go, Ames. Hold on to me.” She hopped onto his back and he ran off, leaving the others behind. “Where are we going?” she questioned, having to lift her voice, caught in a shout, due to the noise of the wind. “I'm not telling you! Can you close you eyes?” “Hm!” She agreed  and closed her eyes, her muzzle decorated with a smile that showed her joy of being like this. Shadow would often lift her in his arms or let her sit on his shoulders while running so fast and she enjoyed the feeling of the wind, bristling against her quills and the power that was released from his velocity- almost transcendent. There was nothing that could ever knock them down. She felt his speed slowly fade into a slower pace and he gradually came to a stop. “Can I open my eyes now?” “I was going to have you keep them closed for the entire evening with no reason.” “What?” Amy shouted, her tone decorated with awe and annoyance and she opened her eyes – the view was so stunning, it took her breath away. Countless ivory flowers covered in the silver light of the rising moon above this lake, surrounded by hills and mountains. It was amazing and she instantly forgot about the reason she opened her eyes in the first place. “It's beautiful...”

Exits in Video Games: Immanence and Transcendence (Calum Rodger)
Tumblr media
In this essay, Calum Rodger explores the poetics of exits and transcendence in video games, via the vectored planes of ‘Victorian-thought-experiments-turned-quirky-novella’ Flatland. Read on for reflections on the secret ecstasies and eeriness that accompany discoveries of glitches, nonsensical infrastructures and metatextual moments in the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, Monkey Island and, of course, the virtual sublime of that San Andrean Heaven.
> Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is the weirdest little book. Published in 1884, written by schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott, and pseudonymously attributed to ‘A Square’, it describes a strange and awful world of only two dimensions. Its inhabitants – lines, triangles, squares and polygons – are organised according to a totalitarian caste system wherein rank corresponds to the number of one’s sides (nobility are hexagons and above; priests, the highest class, are circles; women, the lowest, are lines). Not that these shapes are conventionally perceived as such by Flatland’s residents: with no way of stepping outside their flat plane of existence, their world appears to them as a series of monotone straight lines in various shades of brightness (colour – the ‘chromatic sedition’ - is brutally suppressed, compromising as it does the ‘intellectual Arts’ of Flatland and, with it, the nobles’ hold on power). ‘Irregularities’ of all kinds - ‘an infant whose angle deviates by half a degree from the correct angularity’, say – are summarily destroyed at birth. Not only must Flatland be an awful place to live; it must also be interminably dull.
> The book is remarkable for the head-spinning extent to which it imagines how a world might be liveable in such dimensionally-limited conditions. It is a necessarily dystopian world: how can one conceive of liberty in a world literally without depth? Flatland is totalitarian by its very form, lacking a structure from which liberty might emerge; there is, in other words, no exit. Only after the narrator’s encounter with a ‘Stranger’ - a ‘Sphere’ from ‘Spaceland’ - does real exit become possible, as the visitor enlightens his incredulous host:
What you call Solid things are really superficial; what you call Space is really nothing but a great Plane. I am in Space, and look down upon the insides of the things of which you only see the outsides. You could leave the Plane yourself, if you could but summon up the necessary volition. A slight upward or downward motion would enable you to see all that I can see.
Unlike conventional dystopias, where the potential of exit is immanent to the system itself (in the irrepressible human parts: love, desire, freewill, etc.), exit from Flatland is transcendent in the genuinely metaphysical sense: a ‘climbing over’ (cf. immanent, ‘remaining within’) one’s dimensional limits, a ‘slight upward or downward motion’ beyond not merely the plausible, but the possible.
> There is an obvious religious subtext to Flatland (it’s telling that Abbott was a reverend and a theologian), with an exit into Spaceland and subsequent transcendence into a God-like omnipresence analogous with enlightenment and epiphany. But this is neither the most timely analogy nor, really, the most revealing. Among Victorian-thought-experiments-turned-quirky-novellas Flatland is surely singular, insofar as it could, conceivably, be accurately ‘translated’ into a 1980s-era home computer game (albeit a very difficult and boring one). And what are the ‘Spacelands’ of contemporary games but extensions of the formal principles of Flatland: virtual worlds constructed according to arbitrary limitations, underpinned by mathematical ‘realities’ to which we mere inhabitants are never granted access? The analogy, then, is between the immanent exits of the games themselves – their deaths, save points, level ends, level ups – which only ever lead to more game, and the transcendent exits lurking imperceptibly somewhere between the game and the code, a ‘slight upward or downward motion’ (which is to say a whole world) away from the limits and objectives set in advance by the game’s structure. It’s an idea which has long interested developers and, more recently, players, with whole subcultures dedicated to finding those exits through which one might ‘look down upon the insides of the things’. But what do transcendent exits look like? Are they even possible? And why – since games are not dystopias we are cursed to inhabit but fictional closed systems in which we participate willingly – do gamers ‘summon up the necessary volition’ to seek transcendent exits at all? While the answers to these questions are beyond the scope of this essay, the transcendent quirks of three classic games can, perhaps, point us in the right direction.
> First: the ambiguous ‘GOAL’ of Sonic the Hedgehog (1991). In Sonic –probably the first video game I ever played – there was one thing that always got me. In the vertigo-inducing bonus stage, your goal was to reach the ‘chaos emerald’ at the centre of a maze. But the maze’s numerous exits, which you endeavoured with rising panic to avoid, were all emblazoned with the word ‘GOAL’. Why, my perplexed seven-year-old self asked, did all the exits say ‘GOAL’ even though they were emphatically bad? What was in the least bit ‘GOAL’-like about these terrifying immanences? My childhood geekery led me to the Westernised version of the game’s back story, which revealed that the villain of the piece, Dr. Robotnik, had designed the mazes as traps. These apparently nefarious exits, then, were but sweet blessed releases from these endless, timeless labyrinths. But that explanation didn’t satisfy me. Leaving aside the fact that the game explicitly rewards you with extra lives for staying in the maze as long as possible, what kind of fool would go chasing the ‘GOAL’ exits, ‘scored’ as with an all-too-simple nudge left on the control pad? What kind of absurd universe was this anyway? Curiously, this was the only aspect of the universe that troubled me. Liberating tiny animals from robot shells with a mutant blue hedgehog I accepted as perfectly logical; the ambiguous ‘GOAL’ just didn’t make sense.
> I later learned that the ‘GOAL’ anomaly was probably due to a mistranslation in the Japanese-designed game, which Western distributors tried (with limited success) to accommodate in their back story. Two things to say about this: one) it makes me like it even more; and two) while this doesn’t involve transcendent exits per se, it frames the ‘flatlanding’ limitations of immanent exits. That’s why it didn’t make sense: it rendered both ‘GOAL’ and chaos emerald (failure and success) as ultimately one and the same. This error in translation – this glitch, you might say – is the accidental ‘Sphere’ that demonstrates such is the case. By extension, there is no essential (‘transcendent’) difference between the GAME OVER screen and the end credits the player is treated to once beating the final boss. Both say ‘now play again – or do something else’. But neither, the ambiguous ‘GOAL’ suggests, offers transcendence. As the theologian wants the real beyond the real, so the transcendent player wants the game beyond the game, the virtual beyond the virtual; like the ‘Sphere’, to ‘leave the Plane’.
> Second: the infamous ‘stump joke’ in The Secret of Monkey Island. While the ambiguous ‘GOAL’ of Sonic is a kind of poetic fortuity, the Monkey Island developers – primarily writer Ron Gilbert, a legend in a certain vintage school of game design that prizes narrative and humour over adrenaline and point-scoring – played with and extended the conventions of gaming to an extent that remains visionary today. Monkey Island has many of the generic hallmarks of postmodern fiction and cinema: intensely metatextual and ironically self-aware, its protagonist breaks the fourth wall more often than Mario and Luigi break crudely-pixellated blocks. But it’s the ways in which the game self-reflexively plays with its own medium – significantly, its exits – that are truly innovative. For one thing, you can’t die, subverting what is perhaps the most common gaming trope of all (this is partly a dig at rival developer Sierra, whose adventure games are infamous for the frequency and ease with which players pop their avatarial clogs). But even more amazing is the ‘stump joke’. Like all PC games of the time, Monkey Island was published on a number of floppy disks (in this case, three) which had to be switched around when moving between game areas (that is, at various immanent exits). The stump joke comes early on in the game, when attempting to interact with a nondescript tree stump in a labyrinthine forest. The player is told to ‘Insert disk 22 and press button to continue’, the first of several requests for high-numbered non-existent disks. Eventually the game resumes as the protagonist says, with characteristic understatement, ‘I guess I can’t go down there. I’ll just have to skip that part of the game.’ Joke is: there is no ‘down there’.
> Simple enough, you might think. But while I figured there was something amiss with the ambiguous ‘GOAL’, the stump joke in Monkey Island – which I first played around the same time as Sonic – was a meta conundrum way beyond my understanding. I was desperate for it to mean something: for the ‘down there’ to exist. And I wasn’t alone. The ‘joke’ was too confusing for many players (many of them grown-ups, I should add), and it was removed from later versions of the game. As ‘A Square’ is obliged to return to Flatland and, in an ending Plato could have predicted, is considered a lunatic and is promptly incarcerated for the social good, so the stump joke was just too transcendent for 1990s gamers’ mores. But games – and gamers – have changed a lot since then. The faux-transcendence of the stump joke has given way to a player-driven pursuit of transcendence, that ‘slight upwards or downward motion’ which breaks the game’s syntax, revealing it – even if momentarily – as something other than it claims to be. The increasing complexity of virtual game worlds, and the concomitant impossibility of testing its every ‘slight upward and downward motion’, has inspired gamers to play the game against its grain until it breaks, finding the glitch that reveals ‘that part of the game’ – the world inside the stump – which we were never supposed to see.
> Hence, third: ‘Hidden Interiors World’, or ‘Heaven’, of 2005 title Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It is difficult to describe, to a non-gamer, the sense of awe I have experienced on entering the world of San Andreas: its vastness; its character; its endless complexity; and, above all, its absolute liberty. But this liberty, I am aware even within my awe, is an illusion. All gamers know this (though the moralising press might disagree), but only the transcendent gamer, ‘summon[ing] up the necessary volition’, can see it for themselves. Such a gamer reaches for ‘Heaven’. As one how-to video on YouTube puts it:‘The Universe of Hidden Interiors or Heaven refers to [a] “universe” […] placed high in the sky, far from the fly height limit. Once inside Heaven, the normal world of San Andreas disappears.’
> In crude materialistic (virtualistic?) terms, ‘Heaven’ is where San Andreas keeps its interior areas, probably to limit loading times when passing (immanently) between them and the main external area. But this prosaic explanation is much too ‘superficial’ to do justice to ‘slight […] upward motion’ and the vision it begets! It’s the sudden collapse of space and distance, the eerie silence, the solitude. It’s the fact you’re in on a secret, have seen something few others have seen (seen it from the insideas well as the outside). It’s also the tranquility, a surprisingly affecting counterpoint to a game-world defined by its constant movement, violence, and energy. That said, I have to concede that its revelation, such as it is, bears little comparison to that of ‘A Square’. The excitement of being somewhere phenomenologically elsewhere is tempered – or perhaps it is exaggerated – by the knowledge that this world is merely an accident of design; its transcendence not a ground, but a figure’s remainder. And that too is its pleasure. ‘Heaven’ is a place where nothing ever happens – but we dream about it anyway.
> Poet and critic Ben Lerner has written of his ‘hatred of poetry’; actually, a frustration at poetry’s inevitable imperfections, borne of an idealistic love for it. He recalls, in his childhood, ‘speaking a word whose meaning I didn’t know but about which I had some inkling’, locating in that ‘provisional’ sense the essence of poetry. Once a word was ‘mastered’, it ‘click[s]’, and is no longer poetry. ‘Remember how easily our games could break down or reform or redescribe reality?’ he asks. Games have their poetry: their transcendent exits, metaphoric apertures nestled deep within the metonymic totality of their worlds. For innocence and experience, for order and liberty, for squares and spheres, they are exits worth chasing.
