Y’know. Anakin was a real asshole in Ahsoka’s hallucination.

Like. She mentions something about what she’ll be able to teach her padawan one day, since all she’s being taught is how to be a soldier, and Anakin’s like “teaching’s not all it’s cracked up to be”

And like. Asshole move. And Ahsoka rightfully calls him out on it. And he goes on the whole “uuuh I was joking. Lighten up.” Literally a complete jackass.

But beyond how he answered the question, it’s a valid complaint Ahsoka is bringing up! Anakin’s teaching her how to live or die. But Ahsoka wants to be taught how to be a jedi.

What happens after the war is over (order 66 never happens) and she now has to navigate a galaxy without a war? The Jedi take teaching very seriously there’s no greater honor than teaching a padawan. And she’s not being accurately taught, so she will not be able to pass anything on to the next generation.

But Anakin brushes it aside because he simply does not respect her or her wishes. Like. He never wanted a padawan, despite teaching being foundational to the Jedi. And he only took ahsoka in because he started to like her and became attached to her. He doesn’t care about jedi legacy, not really. So he brushes her comment off with a joke.

But in the rest of the vision… idk it didn’t feel like we were supposed view Anakin as entirely wrong here. He wasn’t in the right, he was definitely channeling Vader and being an ass, but he was basically the reason Ahsoka survived the fall, right? Bc he was making her choose life? When Ahsoka wins against him it’s sort of like she’s both learned his lesson and moved beyond him. And then for the rest of the season he’s only talked about in positive ways.

And like. That one line ahsoka said was really powerful in relation to the entire point of the show. What does she have to pass onto her own padawan (Sabine) if she wasn’t properly trained herself? That is, perhaps, the only valid plot question asked in the entire show. And it doesn’t get an answer. It’s never even brought up again.

#I have now learned Dave filoni wrote the entire series #so I am able to say now with absolute positivity that he’s a shit writer #I had been blaming the issues that the writers went on strike for #but no it’s just filoni being a terrible writer I guess?#I mean. none of the character issues are ever really resolved #we have no reason to believe ahsoka is ready to be a master now #we have no real understanding of WHY Sabine unlocked her force powers and shit (not how it works but whatever)#Sabine never learns her lesson about letting thrawn come back #Ahsoka doesn’t get anything really resolved with Anakin #she just acts like he was never Vader and that he was a great master #when we SEE in her vision he was not #idk it’s like every character plot point was dropped #nothing happened in the first half of the show #the dark side girl had a half rebellion but we got no emotion or background from her #it was just… a pointless show #nothing was accomplished #star wars #anti ahsoka #anti anakin skywalker

(If we’re going off the original movie Jim would probably offer them a hot meal and a room for the night, knowing him he’d make everything super accommodating)

How evil is arlecchino and what is she cooking

As of 4.2, I’m really curious what they’re planning with Arlecchino as a character, especially as a villain/antagonist/morally dubious character, and how far/which direction they may go with that

Intuitively my impression is we’ll see her do something way more “villainous” than she presents herself as being for majority of Fontaine’s AQ in front of us right—(which isn’t a surprise given that, you know, Arlecchino nor the House of Hearth have never been presented as 110% ethical LOL) but I find myself not being in complete agreement with most analysis or speculation threads I see about Arlecchino’s morality and the like, level of sinister people seem to ascribe to her.

Idk how to put it, especially in regards to her children I do agree they are not a wholesome found family, that Arlecchino is not above pulling strings or using them for her own ulterior motives, but I kind of hesitate on the idea she only cares about the Hearth children as a means to the end/things she can control and there’s nothing else going on with her characterization wise there. I’m not saying that impression seems remotely unreasonable or unfounded, but just that it feels there’s something intentionally missing in how we are supposed to conceptualize her as a person

My main reasoning for this hunch is the fact they have not elaborated on Arlecchino and the previous Knave—who Arlecchino is stated to have taken over the position from by force. The extra tidbits I think about are that 1) Arlecchino was previously an orphan in the Hearth 2) the previous Knave is described as way, way crueler to the children of than Heart than Arlecchino was from when she took control of the House

Often, people’s major indicators that the House of the Hearth is kind of super fucked up are the NPCs we meet in world quests who are part of it and clearly suffering. But one thing I haven’t ever seen people mention w this that i think is a very interesting detail is, in The Very Special Fortune Slip Inazuma worldquest, where we stop this House of Hearth guy (Efim Snezhevich) from manufacturing tension between Watasumi/the Shogunate to restart the war with his other Hearth subordinates, at the end of the quest we get this dialogue that reveals he had been acting under the previous Knave’s directives:

It’s also mentioned he’s employing this plan in an attempt to “rebuild the prestige of the Knave” following Signora’s death, iirc? Now, see, the dialogue itself says that this is “assuming our captive is telling the truth” so who knows what’s really going on, but I find this a really odd/interesting thing to highlight. I’m a bit fuzzy on other world quests with Hearth members, and am not saying none of them were acting and subsequently being treated poorly by our Arlecchino, but like, this gives me a lot of questions especially when paired with implications this previous Knave seemed to be way worse

Like, what drove Arlecchino to take over? How unexpected and controversial was this within the House? Assuming the above information is all true it definitely says something this guy went rogue and acted on what the previous Knave would want and didn’t think our Arlecchino would greenlight it, which does feel consistent with the previous Knave being described as basically worse & crueler than our Arlecchino. It also makes me question how much house of hearth things we’ve seen outside the main story are the work of our Arlecchino or if there’s a bigger divide of loyalty. Heck, I could be wrong but it doesn’t even seem like we know if the previous Knave is dead or not

This isn’t me saying Arlecchino couldn’t possibly be treating hearth children worse than she wants us to know, especially ones who aren’t her “favorites” the way the fontaine trio seem to be, but I really don’t feel sure about making a solid conclusion of her exact level of malice the way ppl r generally understanding it rn when it feels there’s going to be more about her. Just the idea of she, as a Hearth child, clashed with the previous leader who was known for being cruel, overtook their position and took on less harsh methods of leading that made at least some members with more power/possible closer proximity to the previous Knave go rogue and try to commit atrocities in the previous Knave’s name…I feel this leaves a lot of room to suggest there’s more going on with how Arlecchino is as a person

I don’t mind if she’s just very evil and deceptive bc if she totally had me fall for thinking she was less evil than she actually was that’s fun tbh. But I feel people suggest that’s all her character could be with no degree of like, “sympatheticness” or deep grey morality and that if her character did go there it would be automatically poor writing and genshin walking back on making a truly evil woman when IDK. I feel you can claim at this point they have left it open ended and it’s never been completely confirmed she’s pure evil. Also sometimes I just get a hunch and feel cautiously confident in Genshin executing certain characters well. Not all characters, just certain ones. Especially given Fontaine’s character writing being very good and a character like Lyney feeling very solid to me when any development with Arlecchino would likely involve him and his siblings as well, I honestly feel open to the idea of Arlecchino being satisfyingly written to be both villainous/morally dubious but “sympathetic/likable as a person” in ways outside of just her ruthlessness if that makes sense

If I’m wrong/they drop the ball with it more than I anticipate I’ll eat my hat but I am pretty excited about her character and which way they decide to go with it. I will say the only potential impression I have of where they’ll go with her has been wondering if it will go in a “cycles of abuse” direction—I’d be surprised if they ever elaborated on Arlecchino’s character especially in how she feels about things and her also growing up as an exploited child of the hearth wasn’t relevant

u know at the beginning i kind of thought kfp4 was gonna do something with shifus whole. deal. but they didnt like at all which is a shame

You are right about the colors! The background goes from yellow (caution) and slowly starts to warm up, until yes, we see the point, the moment when her feelings go from wariness and caution to trust, where her feelings begin to develop and become feelings of a whole other nature.

But it jumps from the moment she comes to trust him to the moment he is - very pointedly and literally - leaving her in the dark. Consider Shinae's feelings at that moment, when Nol blindfolds himself to hide his tears to hide his state of mind to hide his fears and insecurities and feelings. It leaves her so frustrated and hurt. He's literally left her in the dark. She doesn't understand why he won't show these parts of himself that she is so desperately hungry for to her. It's the moment that her feelings have really come to a head, too; all along they've been developing, brewing, slowly shifting from wariness to friendship to these feelings to want to want to want but in that moment she hasn't figured it out - not the moment when he hides himself from her and not this moment as she's talking about the feelings with Maya.

He's left her in the dark but she, too, is in the dark about her own feelings. What she feels about him now is so much more complex than it once was, full of so much want and need - to see him to know him to stay by his side (to have him[SCREAMS]) and she herself doesn't know what any of it means what she feels. It's left her confused and frustrated. Her feelings are simultaneously a series of comfort and trust but also feeling like crap and so the color is black, because in that moment what she's feeling isn't warmth, isn't comfort but instead frustration, feeling hurt, feeling like crap because he won't let her in.

i enjoy any war crime induced by rage, racking up a ton of kills, maiming every enemy combatant in sight. only shitheads kill in attempt to live up to the heroism of others

#thinking about malouf’s ransom specifically here lol #when he writes achilles’ having a vision of priam’s death at the hands of neoptolemus #with the attempt of avenging his father. but their is nothing to avenge. same with polyxena #in hecuba they have it be tbat achilles’ spirit comes before neoptolemus and tells him to kill her to return #but i could just be a euripides hater with the exception of his helen play but. that doesnt sit right with me #it is to appease the wind in the same way iphigenia was to appease the gods #it was bound to happen anyways. but it is upon achilles’ grave as neoptolemus again sees himself as avenging his father #it is an unsatisfying act. all that killing for the sake of achilles #sure u can be like. polyxena led him to the gates #but she didnt kill him that is paris and apollo #but paris is already dead so who is left for neoptolemus to target as his father’s avenger #it is a role without any use. it is pointless.#and when we see achilles in the odyssey he barely cares about the news of his own son beyond odysseus saying yeah he is chilling #it is more to lament his own suffering #i dont think achilles cares in the end about neoptolemus. he is just a boy like his father bred for war and desperate #for purpose and attachment #beyond that tho. i dont think achilles would approve of killing priam like that is the main thing #he is not above violence to the man. he threatens him in book 24. but in the end there is a respect there. for the grief and loss they share #malouf writes about the shame that follows neoptolemus after everything #and i think that is a far more poignant thing than disappointment from the father you barely know #to carry the weight of your actions knowing that your father would so differently #again achilles is a piece of shit and would do the same if not worse in his son’s place #but in his place toward priam he wouldnt. and neoptolemus reaps that destruction anyways #this is long winded the point is the shame rather than the actual disapproval of war crimes lol #i will say i dont think achilles’ rage and revenge is to the same level. he laments after patroclus died that it hurts more than he thought #because he would think losing a father or son to be more heartbreaking #but no it is the loss of the equal and confidant that hurts the most #but neoptolemus never knew his father. this isnt for his father’s personal sake it is for his legacy + where neoptolemus will end up with it #and therein lies the difference. they have that familial bond but no real connection #ask

I have two questions:

1. Have you ever considered writing a book that you would want to get published?

2. I wonder if you will explore Matt’s blindness in TRT. Like for example at the end of the day Matt did lose his eyesight and maybe sometimes wished he could see Jane. It doesn’t have to be a big thing because Matt has accepted his disability but like a moment when he’s just really wants it. Idk I thought it would cool

1. I’ve thought about it, yes! And I’ve actually got an (unedited) trilogy of vaguely humorous, post-apocalyptic scifi adventure books that’s like... halfway written, and that I’d love to get published. I was actually in the process of working on Book 1 when Covid hit, and then my writer’s group kinda... collapsed, which is when I promptly discovered that as an extrovert, I desperately need interaction to make The Story go. No interaction, no drive (and that’s also why fic works fine). And sometimes I toy with the idea of starting up again, maybe with a new writer’s group. I’m also looking into taking a lot of the original elements of TRT and then self-publishing that (with some changes to get Disney off my back obvs), which would let me keep the fic up, too. Not sure! I definitely have plans to try to get a book published eventually though!

2. Sometimes I’ve thought about it! I may touch on it eventually, though very, very delicately. Like you said, it wouldn’t be big because I really do think Matt’s accepted he’s blind and he doesn’t see it as a bad thing, and it’s really not. I do admittedly think he probably still gets understandably frustrated at how blatantly inaccessible some things still are (ex: i literally walked by a coffee shop that had a printed piece of paper inside the window in small print that said ‘large print or braille menu accessible on request!’ and I was like... ok but a blind/visually impaired person can’t read that???). Cause that’s the truth of it - he is still blind. He’s got a disability that affects his day to day and even if he’s happy the way he is (or that’s how I read him), he still needs his aids. I’ve tried to make that clear in TRT - Jane’s taken up his labeling system with braille, she leaves things in *very* specific places because Matt’s got an organization system he needs, he uses his ear pieces and refreshable braille display. And yeah, as someone who’s disabled myself, I could see him now and then going... ‘I wish I could see just for a second’ when there’s no solution for something - when he’s touching old pictures of his dad, or now and then when he’s with Jane, in the same way I’m sometimes like, ‘I wish I could literally run somewhere without pain, just to feel the wind’. It’s a passing thought usually, but it’s probably there now and then for him. So the thought’s rattling around in my brain, definitely. If the right moment in fic comes I can see touching on it!

#ask response #the red thread #daredevil #on matt's blindness and disability #sure i'm disabled but mine's different than matt's so i try to be aware of that while navigating it in fic #we know based on ep 1 with his brief mention that there *are* things he'd love to see again - the sky in that case #and so i think jane would fall into that category #but we also know he doesn't see his blindness as something there to hinder him based on what he says to foggy when talking about stick #and in some ways he sees her more deeply than anyone else on this planet #he just sees her without vision #he hears her heartbeat and all the other little pieces of her no one else gets to hear #he gets to experience the comfort of her scent at a fundamental level #he gets to feel the way her temperature changes when she's excited or happy to see him or when she sees a kitten #and when he kisses her he can taste *so much* of who she is #he doesn't need sight to know her #and i honestly don't think he'd ever trade his senses for getting his vision back because he's happy the way he is #but there'd probably still be a moment now and then of 'it would be nice if i could see her just for a second'#as for getting published one day I can oooooooooonly hope!#i've got stuff written already that either needs to be finished or edited #but it's hard in original work cause I need that back and forth interaction with other people to get my inspo flowing #i'm definitely hoping to get published one day though and i'd love to make writing a profession #fingers crossed!

I have a lot of fond memories of my TDI 'fics and how they helped me grow my love for expanding on canon, writing large casts of characters, and playing with the friendships and conflicts that arise due to forced proximity because you're literally stuck in a 5-star hotel with these people and can't do anything about it... I certainly wouldn't have the 'fics I'm writing today if I'd never written Life of a Loser!

Honestly, it's SO tempting to polish my drafts for the other elimination 'fics I wrote... My Staci one didn't survive the draft because of a specific plot twist I wanted that turned out to be too ambitious, but I love Leonard and how his 'fics were coming. There are some gut-wrenching things I wrote for the Leonard-Tammy dynamic in my Ridonculous Race draft (and a lot of manipulative Topher in both that and "Beatin' Path") and if opportunity arises to spare the time & motivation, I'd love to post more of that :)

I did have some early Mario drabbles I used to post, but I consider Life of a Loser my first "official" fanfic. Take me back to the days of writing Noah and Eva just constantly dunking on anti-hero Ezekiel and bonding over it. NoVa being besties who are canonically down to split a million dollars with each other, my beloved...
