This one is long as fuck and kinda boring

Had a woman come in demanding a refund for a shoe that visibly got damaged because if wasnt the correct size for her (her feet were moving around inside the shoe, which shredded the heel lining).

As company policy (and local law) dictates, we send it to a third party independent quality examiner, who determined whether the fault lies with the company or the customer. As expected, the examination came back negative, meaning we were not at fault and do not have to give a refund, however the company does fix shoes for free with a really great shoemaker within 2 years of purchase.

The customer loses her shit at the result of the examination, writes multiple pissy emails to the store (saying shit like "lol" and "surprise surprise" in what is essentially a business email - yes, in english. No i do not live and work in an english speaking country), calling us to say the exact same things, telling us that the examination was "a joke" and that we "obviously pay off the examiner". She also says we accused her of deliberately damaging her shoes, which we did not. The examination report does say the damage was caused by "outside force" but in context it's obvious that that simply means the fault did not lie in the material itself, but rather the incorrect use.

We end up sending her shoes to be fixed, and the shoemaker ends up putting a leather panel at the heel part because that wont be worn out as easily as fabric would, and it's also thicker, thus helps with the size problem a bit. The leather piece is not visible from the outside, and even when you look at it, it just looks like it was made like that in the factory.

Customer comes to pick up her shoes, for which we need to ask for her copy of a form we fill out when we take the quality complaint. She literally throws it at me over the counter. I very leisurely read the info on it, get her shoes from the back, compare the form with the docket in the box of the shoes, etc. I show her the finished product, ask her if its alright (as is company procedure).

She flips her shit completely, saying it looks disgusting (it objectively did not), how she wants a refund right away, how she cant wear this lile that, what will people think of her, how we are disgusting thieves for doing this to her. I tell her i can take her shoes to be fixed differently (still for free), but she will have to tell me exactly what to write on the form on how she wants it to look, because thats what the shoemaker will follow. She keeps ranting in incomplete sentences that dont make any sense, contradict themselves, and just generally not being helpful at all. I wait for her to finish, then i ask her, with no patience left whatsoever, to tell me word for word what to write. "Make it aesthetically pleasing. Write that. Thats it." Im like..............maam. Obviously the shoemaker thought this looks fine, as he gave it to us as finished. Hell, I think it looks absolutely fine. You're gonna have to be more specific.

She looks at me and goes "WHAT DONT YOU UNDERSTAND, ARE YOU STUPID?"

Now. This might be an everyday happening in america, but in europe, you dont talk like that to cashiers. Not ever, because we're not quite that far in late capitalism, and the employees are very much allowed to ask for respect. I put down my pen, and tell her that if she doesnt start watching her tone and talking to me like a human being instead of a piece of dirt on her shoe, i will deny her service, and she can come back another day to talk to another person. She looks me in the eye and says "I TALK TO YOU THE WAY YOU DESERVE." So i give her her copy of the new form, and tell her we're done here, she can pick her shoes up when we send her an email, bye.

She storms out, only to come back 5 minutes later to ask for an official complaint form. We have a pen attached to it, but it hasnt been used in so long that it dried up, which she decides to let me know about by throwing the pen at me and demanding a new one. She fills out the form absolutely incomprehensibly, i couldnt read a word, and she also yells at another customer not to shop here, because we're thieves and scammers, then leaves again.

The next day we get an email from the lady who runs the company in the country, forwarding an email from the same customer that she sent to the customer service email, making up lies about how we treated her, how we lied to her, how we ruined her shoes. Our manager writes her back to come into the store to get a refund to "clear any confusions". When she comes in, our manager told her in no uncertain terms, that the only reason she's getting the refund is so she will stop harassing us and to never ever expect this to happen again. That her behavior is not tolerated in our store, and she is not welcome here.

Shitty story but at least the manager didnt let her believe she won.

Today was a rainy, but pretty good, day. I slept a little better last night. Even if falling asleep hasnt been going well. I woke up in a good mood. James had put air in the tires and gas in the car. I gave him lots of hugs and headed out.

There are to many cars on the road. But it was fine. I had a good ride in. And honestly it was just a nice morning.

Some parts were quiet. It was rainy. I spent a lot of time today just enjoying my own company. When I first got there we were all sitting on the porch. I told them all about my powerpoint project and they thought I was very silly but excited that I was excited.

I had some free time and some energy this morning though. So I went and changed into my rain boots, which have finally broken and absolutely need to be replaced now, and went down to homestead. Heather had asked the specialty teachers to work on cleaning that since we had some time in the afternoon. But I had time then so off I went.

I listened to my podcast and I cleaned for about an hour and a half. It was kind of rainy and damp all day but it was hella gross down there. Everything was covered in mud. There was so much stuff just around. It was terrible. I started with picking up stuff off the ground. I didnt get the stuff under the picnic tables because honestly, it was to hard to bend that much. But I also had some of the campers help me collect all the containers and tubs down there so I could hose them off. Everything was going to go into storage and they couldnt go in covered in mud. But then everything was wet from the hose and I was very hot. Break time.

I went and sat at arts and crafts for a few minutes. Caught my breath. Enjoyed the hammock. Enjoyed the rain sounds. And then went down to the office to check in with Heather. She was super surprised that I had been cleaning down there alone. Acted all proud of me. And my stupid money brain was like "Praise???" so of course I went back later in the day and kept cleaning and wiping things off and putting things in totes. Cj is going to come back on thursday and help sort but in the mean time at least they would be able to get everything away from the muddy area.

Heather told me that after lunch I should go help with sandwiches. But I had time. So I went and finished setting up in art. Laid around. Had my lunch a little early.

And went to figure out making sandwiches. But that went all wrong because apparently there was a change of plans, but no one told me. I made like 20 sandwiches when Elizabeth came in and was like. The fridge broke and we arent allowed to use this food anymore. Even though it was in a cooler that was still cold. Which seems silly to me but food rules are important. I just feel bad that I wasted the bread. And another change of plans was that I was supposed to be running trading post again. But I had asked! A few times! And was told no, youre doing sandwiches. So I was all confused. And a little unsettled. Im still unsettled honestly. I hate doing things wrong. I hate being wasteful. Doesnt feel good.

But I headed up to trading post and it went just fine. It was healthy day and no one told me that so I had to get that stuff but everyone was quick to help me set it up.

It took a little longer today, I dont know why but we were having trouble getting the kids up and in line. But it was done and I went to art to wait for my group.

This group was tough. I knew that. Because they were the little ones and there were 13 of them. But it went well all things considered. We ran a little over time. And James, their counselor, was obviously stressed. But the kids were so excited that they made their little quilt square. But because of us running late I didnt get a picture. Ah well. It was still a lot of fun.

Half their kids wanted to use the bathroom and then there was an early pick up and then their program space changed and it was a whole ordeal. I was barefoot but I told James I would take half his group to their next program. So I threw on some shoes and walked them down to the office. Where James met us and took over.

I headed back to art and cleaned everything up. Took a small break. Okay a little bit longer. Wrapped in my blanket in my hammock. It was great.

Im a little sad thinking about it only because Maryland is moving into phase three and I dont know what my job situation is going to look like going forward. Its hard. Im scared all the time, but being out at camp at least feels safe. I dont think I will feel safe in another job yet. And like none of my museums are going to open for field trips. And so its like. Fall at camp was already tentative. It was already like. Unsure. But Alexi is hoping it will at least be some time every week. And Im trying to stay positive but its hard and Im scared about what the fall will bring with covid and with the cold. I am going to try to get into my art more. Try to actually sell things? Well see what happens I guess.

The rest of the afternoon was cleaning down at Homestead and then hanging out with the kids at the office until 5 when I headed out.

I drove to Hunt Valley and went to the Marshals I discovered there. I didnt realize that the shopping center had a back side. And I had excellent luck. I finally found a long sleeve black shirt. To replace my lost one. And I got some gum and a pretty makeup and a night time lotion. The cashier was very sweet. But I was starving and had to go find some dinner.

I ended up going to wawa and ate a hoagie in my car. Just living my best life. I had a long and strange drive home. I got a light on my car that I had never seen before. But I looked it up and it seems like its not a big deal. It only flashed at me two different times and didnt stay on so its probably okay but Ill keep an eye on it.

I got back here and was annoyed to find a cop in the alley. But Mr Will was also outside and it was nice to see him. He got one of those two screen phones, very fancy. He showed me how to look for jobs on facebook market place. Which I didnt need him to do but I enjoy him and his dad energy so I let him show me. He's great. I was also glad to see he was actually wearing a mask. I worry about him!!

I got in here and it was basically 7. I put stuff away and did the dishes. I got a piece of the cookies and cream cheese cake James made and played animal crossing. I cant believe its september but that brings changes to the island! New bugs and fish! I caught a soft shelled turtle! I played until 8 and then took a lovely long bath.

And now I am just hanging out. I am tired and hoping I fall asleep easier tonight. I hope you all have a great night and a wonderful tomorrow!

you were spending the day with heath, zane and mariah, running a couple of arrends.

one of the pit stops was the local target where your goal was to get some supplies for one of heath's videos you were helping them out with, however your eyes landed on something else that seemed much more interesting. passing one of the aisles to get to the kitchen aisle, a big, pink teddy bear caught your eye.

"ooh, look at that one!" you gasped in excitement, pointing at the stuffed animal as you grabbed zane's upper arm.

"what? the bear?" zane questioned as he looked in the same direction you were pointing to.

it was a big, pink teddy bear, almost life size, as fluffy and soft it could get, wearing a matching bowtie. "yes! it's so cute," you squealed, reaching your hands forward to reach on top of the shelf before grabbing it. "feel how soft it is!" you cheered, waving the bear around and sticking it in zane's face for him to touch it.

"yeah, yeah, it's pretty soft." zane shrugged before facing the other way, looking for something else, not showing as much enthusiasm as you.

lifting the heavy bear up above your knees, you stumbled your way over to your shopping cart and put it in, with a big smile on your face.

zane looked over his shoulder to catch a glimpse of the big grin on your face. "what are you doing?" he asked, giving you a confused look, putting a hand to his hip.

"i want it," you replied, fluttering your eyelashes and giving him your well known puppy dog eyes.

"you want the teddy bear? why?" zane laughed.

"why not? i need cuddles at night!" you said with firmness in your tone, not taking no for an answer.

you wanted that bear, and you were getting that bear despite what the others thought about it. zane and heath was more confused than anything as to why you wanted another stuffed animal taking up the majority of the space in your bed, and mariah didn't seem to care - she thought it was cute.

even though you had plenty of stuffed animals in your bed, everybody could agree on one thing: the more the merrier. it was like having a protective army of stuffed animals surrounding you at night. why not?

you headed for the cashier with your teddy bear and the rest of the props for heath's video, before getting to the car to drive home.

after finishing up heath's video and call it a day, you joined your friends to go hang out at david's house where the rest of the group was.

hanging out at david's house had become a habit for many. long nights of editing or just hanging out would occur, and they'd most of the time end up in everybody sleeping either on david's big, comfy couch or the love sac.

you, however, had gotten the advantage of sleeping in david's bed. david never minded sharing a bed with you. both you and him enjoyed the cuddles at night. having someone to wrap your arm around, whether it was being the big spoon or little spoon, cuddling up when it would get cold - who wouldn't want that?

it was more of a lowkey type of thing. you and david weren't dating per se, but you had definitely gotten a little more touchy feely lately. not wanting to put a label on it, you didn't share those kinds of stuff with the group. well, you'd share a thing or two with corinna or kristen, as they were your girl friends, but nothing more than that. everybody would just find any excuse to use you and david as clickbait for their videos.

"is everybody sleeping here tonight?" david asked the group lounging on his couch.

zane stretched his arms and legs underneath the blanket, followed by a big yawn, "yeah, is that cool?"

"sure," david nodded before turning towards you, pointing his finger in your direction, "you too?" he smiled.

you shrugged before nodding, feeling a smile sneaking up on your face knowing you'd be sleeping under his arm.

it was around 3 am and everybody had fallen asleep exept for you and david. tonight was just another editing night, and after everyone dozed off you had kept david company while he finished up.

after working on the same four minute video for hours, david let out a big sigh followed by an even bigger yawn. he looked in your direction, hoodie pulled tightly over his head.

you looked up from your phone and landed your eyes on david's. "you tired? you want to go bed?" you asked quitely, looking at his tired eyes.

he nodded and stared down at the floor, eyes glued to it before letting out another yawn. you moved the carpet from your lap and got up from the couch to walk over to his spo, reaching your hand out for him to grab it.

"come on." you smiled before he grabbed your hand and walked with you down the hall way and into his room.

"today has been such a long day." david sighed as he crashed onto his bed, still wearing his hoodie and crawling under the covers.

he lifted up the covers for you to join him and you laid down next to him. gazing into his tired eyes you smiled at him. "you got a lot done, atleast. you deserve some rest." you said, stroking the back of his head gently, making him close his eyes and slowly doze off.

after a while of running your fingers through his hair, you noticed his breaths got heavier and he had already fallen asleep. you carefully turned around in the bed to face the other way, and after getting comfortable underneath the sheets you felt david lazily wrap his arm around your waist, pulling you closer.

the best part about david was his cuddles. he'd often prefer to be the big spoon, being able to not only wrap his arm around your body but also throw his leg over it too. he'd always squeeze you tight, especially on cold nights, and always make sure you were comfy.

"hey, david. are you up?" natalie's voice rang from the other side of the door.

"yeah," david groaned loudly into the pillow.

"good morning, I-" natalie started but was quick to stop midway when she landed her eyes on you and david.

you were laying on your back as david was laying on his side, close to you, with his hand tossed over your body. lifting up your head you squinted at her, the bright lights going directly into your tired eyes.

"oh my god, are you cuddling? that is so cute!" she lilted, opening the door wider. "guys, they're cuddling!" she continued, shouting down the hallway for everybody to hear.

zane, joe and todd hopped down the hallway and bursted into david's room, not wanting to miss the show.

"aww, my babies!" zane cheered, putting his palms to his cheeks, smiling widely.

"is this our new couple?" joe giggled.

you covered your face in your hands as david threw himself over you, covering you with his body, your face buried in his chest. "there’s nothing to see here!" david laughed, covering your face.

"i thought you needed the teddy bear for cuddles, not david! you could’ve just asked me!" zane joked, pretending to be deeply offended and dissapointed in your decisions.

"zane, you can get cuddles too! everyone can! david’s bed is just extremely comfortable." you admitted peeking over david’s shoulder, your face still covered under his body.

"does that mean we can too?" joe asked standing on his tippy toes, pointing at him and todd, with a big smile on his face. you joyfully nodded, making the three of them rush over to david’s bed and crash on top of the two of you, making you and david let out a synchronized groan which caused everyone to laugh. "you don’t need your stuffed animals when you have us." zane smiled as he cuddled up to you.

so theres two groups of people when it comes to seungkwan

1) you’re friends with him or 2) youre not

lucky you, you drop in the first category because if you dont, you’re just a sad outcast who doesnt like the cutest squishy boy

but even if you were friends with him, you werent as close to the extent where you guys hang out often

its the little greetings you guys say to each other in the hallways that keeps this acquaintance going

and its not like youre scared of him or anything

in fact its a little bit more than that

you’ve always admired him for being such a positive light in Pledis High along with his friends

and he’s someone that you aspire to be like - to be fearless and firm in yourself as well as be a pillar of strength for everyone else around

but you’re just that shy student who stammers during presentations because being in the center of attention scares the living heck out of you

he’s practically your aspiration

and its pretty difficult to get close to someone who has 46389392 other people to choose from to hang out with

but thats just you overthinking it because seungkwan has been wondering if he should just ask you to join him for lunch

on the other hand, seungkwan sees you as someone who works diligently behind the scenes

yeah sure you might not be able to lead people in a group project or voice out your opinions

but you do research like a mad scientist and quietly lead the group to an A for a project by leaving notes for improvement in their files

hell yeah he sees you, he sees potential in everyone

but its also because he thinks you’re pretty cute when you get so into the textbook that you’re literally inches away from kissing the pages

but he threatened vernon not to tell you that because he cant just mAke A MoVe

he wants to get to know you more first, about your favourite colour or what you think about when you daydream in class or how your brain manages to store so much information about general facts

most of the random facts you remember is from snapple bottles but no one needs to know that

like every other day when seungkwan passes by your class, he sees you in your seat scribbling on your notes with furrowed eyebrows and your bottom lip between your teeth

and you just tugged on his heartstrings because how can someone look this good while doing something so,,, normal

and vernon has to snap him out of it

“dUde you’re really not making this crush thing any less subtle,”

and seungkwan nearly wants to hold him in a chokehold and make him regret his words

but when he takes another glance at you, you’re staring back and he’s quickly covering up his slightly blushed cheeks with a little wave

while you shot a shy smile towards him and waved back

and that simple action of yours just saved vernon from being suffocated

which also makes seungkwan say fuck it and ask you to join him for lunch or a study session after school that day

he wasn’t able to catch you at lunch that day, probably because you felt more comfortable in the quiet and cool library of the school

so when he sees you preparing your things to leave the school, he jogs right after you and nearly slams himself into your locker door

“hi! yn right?” he asks you, as if he’s never repeated your name in his mind every time he sees you

“y-yeah, what’s up?” you inquired back, zipping up your backpack and closing the locker door shut

“i was thinking, if you had the time, if you could join me on a study session today,”

and as much as you want to confirm his words, the way he looks at you with the hopeful sparkle in his eyes confirmed itself

boo seungkwan was asking you to hang out, and he chose you out of everyone else

“oh,, im free but i have a curfew so i hope you dont mind if we dont stay out too long,” you mustered every ounce of courage you had as you slung your bag over your shoulder

“great!! i know just the right place for us to study at,” he smiles, taking the spot next to you as he guide the both of you out of school

throughout the walk to the study spot seungkwan had planned, he had been talking about the stories about his friends and the way they have been annoyingly him lately - but of course they did it out of affection

“they say i pout alot when i get angry but i dont pout that much >:((”

and as he whined about the statement, his lips indeed formed into a big sad pout just as his friends had said

as you tried to hold back the giggle, that is until he brows began going up and down in frustration like a rollercoaster

and that was the trigger

you burst out laughing, covering your mouth even though it was too late to cover up

while he looked back at you with a confused look - although his chest felt entirely different

the way your eyes turned into crescent moons when you smiled really wide as well as the way your voice sounded harmonious to him

“i’m so sorry,, it’s just that,, your friends are totally right. look at you!!” you attempted to catch your breath while you held your phone to him, the front camera had indeed showed him the pouty face his friends had mentoned

“even you too??? but its not that bad right?” seungkwan looks back at you with pitiful puppy eyes and a part of you melts at the adorable sight

“no its not bad!! its actually pretty cute,” you reassured him, still recovering from your laughing fit

cute?? did you just call boo seungkwan cute??

he’s smile starts to radiate and his cheeks turn bright red from being flustered

but you were too busy chuckling at the accidental selfie he had taken on your phone

before he could even mention the compliment, the both of you had reached the cafe, swinging the door gently as you entered first while he followed behind you

you guys grabbed a spot by the corner, it being one of the best place, as recommended by seungkwan himself

“i’ll order the drinks and you can start studying first,” he shoots you a kind smile before sliding out from his chair

“oh yeah, what would you like?” he inquired, quickly giving him your normal order before he went to the counter

the place was beyond amazing and you werent sure how you havent seen it before when the shop had been placed near the school

the calm and soothing ambient given by the soft jazz playing in the speakers and the bright light illuminating the place was not glaring either

as you began flipping through your notes and your textbooks, seungkwan arrives with a tray of your drinks as well as slice of cake on a plate

“we didn’t order cake but the owner of the shop gave it to us on the house. maybe its because i’ve become a regular,” he chuckled, rubbing the nape of his neck after he had placed the tray to the side

“really?? ah we should thank them,” you turned towards the cashier where a man with circular glasses had a smile plastered on his face

and is that a,,, thumbs up?? did he just mouthed ‘good luck’?

“i think he wished us good luck for our exams since exam season is coming up,” but when you turn back to face seungkwan, he has his hand motioning back and forth across his neck, mouthing something along the lines of “shh”

“you actually know him?” you inquired, catching his attention as he nearly cracked his neck from turning too fast

“o-oh yeah sure! i come here pretty often remember? besides, we should really start studying before its too late,” he laughed nervously, slipping back into his seat and fetching out his required materials

and hour pasts and the pain in your neck starts to grow from facing your textbook from a weird angle, making you stretch in your seat while it captures his attention

“10 minute break?” he asks with a knowing smile as you nodded a little too enthusiastically, immediately regretting your decision while you held your drink in your hands, taking a few sips every so often

“did you get a lot done? i barely got the english practice questions done,” he sighed, taking a sip from his own cup

“yeah i guess. i managed to finish my english assignment too so i can help you if you want!”

“reALLy?? ugh you’re a life savior yn. but enough of studies for now, LETS DIG IN,” he excitedly exclaims, placing the sliced cake between the both of you and handing a dainty small fork that matched his

your eyes sparkled in delight when you tasted the light whip cream along with the soft and spongy cake, eliciting giggles from seungkwan as your shoulders danced in elation

“you’re too adorable,” seungkwan complimented you on instinct

and its only when you look at him with wide eyes that he realized his action

“a-ah am i too straightforward?? i’ll stop if its uncomfortable,”

but that compliment had brought a shy smile to your face, tinting the edges of your ears while you shook your head

you were slightly confused then - was your heart racing because you were with someone you admired, or was it because you began to see him in a different light

in a span of a few hours, seungkwan was more than you had assumed and you really meant that he was more than just an embodiment of positivity and sassiness

you werent sure what words you would exactly use to describe him now that you knew him a little more

but it was definitely not in a way where you saw him as an aspiration any longer

and more on seeing that smile on his face

“yn? yN? are you really sure its ok?” and that cute pout is on his face once again

“y-yeAH its totally fine!! we better finish this cake quick, my curfew is in another hour,” you smiled apologetically before taking another bite

“it’s alright, we can study together again if you want to,”

and minutes just as fast as the time the both of you had spent together

in a split second, you had arrived at your door - although with many times you had reassured him you would be able to walk home alone, seungkwan wouldnt budge an inch

“i guess i’ll see you at school tomorrow?” he questioned, a small shy smile on his face

However, this problem is one I'd rather not pay for if it can be avoided. There was apparently a leak under our shower and it caused some fairly serious rot under the floor. We were unaware of the leak. The carpenter who came says that there will be some fairly extensive work necessary on the shower itself, not just the rotted wood (which will be easy and fairly inexpensive to replace). Snopes is trapped in a complicated legal mess.

Just as one of the oldest fact-checking sites seems to have hit its mainstream stride, it gets tangled in a dramatic legal mess, one that involves lots of finger-pointing, alleged backstabbing, and a contentious divorce.

Its the kind of backroom drama that tends to play out in secret, until someone files a lawsuit. Now we have not one, but two lawsuits, and on Monday, a cry for help.

Snopes has launched a crowdfunding campaign to build a war chest. And its growing quickly. It says it needs the money because the site has been held “hostage” by a vendor, who is blocking access to its domain name, ad revenue, and backend code. But there’s more to it than that.

So far, nearly $334,000 of its $500,000 goal has been donated by almost 12,000 people. The love for Snopes is strong. (UPDATE: As of 11:30 a.m. ET on July 25, a day after it was launched, the campaign has exceeded its original goal.)

Snopes has become the go-to site for debunking urban legends and internet hoaxes since its inception two decades ago, but it became an even bigger player in the fact-checking world during the 2016 election. The site that started out with posts about whether Disneyland had a secret restaurant was competing with the big boys and girls of politics coverage. Its campaign-related posts even got it the attention of Facebook. After facing backlash for hosting fake news, the social media giant hired Snopes, along with the Associated Press and Politifact, as factcheckers.

Now, for the first time, Snopes has to ask its readers for money.

“Its a little bit embarrassing having to go to the public to ask for money, but were kind of forced into the position. We didnt have any other choice,” said David Mikkelson, who started Snopes in 1995. Snopes is now owned by a parent company called Bardav, which Mikkelson co-founded with his ex-wife, Barbara, in 2003.

The vendor allegedly holding Snopes hostage, Proper Media, purports it’s more than just a vendor it says it’s part owner. Five Proper Media members bought 50 percent of Bardav from Mikkelson’s ex-wife last year. The ad-tech and web development firm has sued Snopes’ parent company to keep its control. Its lawyers paint a picture of Mikkelson mismanaging tens of thousands of dollars by using Snopes money for non-business travel allegedly including a honeymoon to Asia following his second marriage.

Proper Media cut Snopes parent company, Bardav, a court-mandated $100,000 revenue check last week for expenses, but Mikkelson is barred from touching it, Karl Kronenberger, Proper Medias attorney, said.

The court said David Mikkelson shall not use it so what does he do? He starts a GoFundMe campaign in his own name. You can draw your own conclusions as to what it will be used for, said Kronenberger, claiming that Mikkelson is running this GoFundMe because he “is unable to operate Snopes profitably without Proper Medias expertise and management.”

Not so fast, said Mikkelson. Proper Media’s just upset Snopes doesn’t want to do business with the company any more and so its representatives are making him look like the bad guy, he said. According to court documents, the Proper Media members who bought half of Snopes’ parent company took out a multi-million dollar loan to do so.

“Basically theyve withheld every penny of advertising revenue that weve earned since February of this year. Theyre claiming the fact that we have to get money from the public shows Ive mismanaged the company,” Mikkelson said. “I would defy any person to operate a company indefinitely with zero revenue.” The GoFundMe money will cover operational and legal expenses, he said.

How did we get here

Once the work of just Mikkelson and his ex-wife, whom he met on a folklore forum, Snopes now has a staff of 16 people. Its one of the 1,000-most popular websites in the U.S., according to legal documents.

So how did Snopes get here, apparently fighting for survival?

Well, its a bit complicated, but bear with me. Before his ex-wife sold her half to Proper Media members in July 2016, Snopes hired the company to do a variety of things, including manage web hosting, content management, and ad revenue. Of the revenue, Proper Media was to pay expenses such as payroll, keep some for its services, and give the rest to Snopes parent company, Bardav. According to Bardav’s lawsuit against Proper Media, it would get up to $85,000 monthly plus half of anything above that baseline. So, doing the math, at minimum, between February and June, Bardav should’ve made $425,000 from Proper Media.

The way the 50 percent was sold to the Proper Media shareholders, because of IRS reasons, leads to the next wrinkle.

Proper Medias five shareholders would get different-sized pieces of the pie from the deal, according to Bardav’s lawsuit. For Mikkelson, this means they’re nothing more than shareholders who collect checks when the company is profitable their shares range from 3.33 percent to 20 percent.

But Proper Media claims that the five shareholders are to act as one for the benefit of Proper Media and therefore have just as much say as Mikkelson, who owns the other half of Bardav. And that sway allegedly would prevent Mikkelson from canceling their contract.

“Its kind of like saying, ‘Hey Im sorry I stole your dog, but you can go to the pound and get another one’.”

To add more to the drama, one of those shareholders left Proper Media in February 2017 to join Snopes in a business development role, taking the keys to parts of the CMS and $10,000 worth of office equipment with him, according to court records. So Snopes can access its CMS to add content and retains editorial control (for now), but Proper Media still collects the ad money.

Proper Media attorney Kronenberger argues that Mikkelson can host the site wherever he likes, raising new ad revenue elsewhere, but he wont be getting Proper Medias tech, which he says optimizes the site for better performance.

Mikkelson contests that though, saying Proper Media is blocking access to the site’s domain name, template, data storage, and code, in addition to its ad revenue.

“Its kind of like saying, ‘Hey Im sorry I stole your dog, but you can go to the pound and get another one,'” Mikkelson retorted.

Proper Media wants to kick Mikkelson out after he spent 22 years running the site. It wants Snopes to continue operating, without him in a director or officer role.

“We are going to figure out how much is owed and we will pay it so long as it doesnt go to David Mikkelson,” Kronenberger said.

Mikkelson sounds like he’s going to fight like hell, though. Both his and Proper Media’s lawsuits are chugging their way through San Diego Superior Court and both sides want the other to pay damages as determined by the court.

“If they just stood back and let the adults run the company they would accrue the benefits that come to shareholders My interest is seeing Snopes run by people whose primary principal is the best interest in Snopes.”
