Steph spins her chair, balancing her elbow on the arm and cradling her chin in her hand. She thumbs her phone open. One unread message in the group chat she shares with Jason and Tim.

Her traitorous heart flutters; a smile curling on her mouth despite herself.

Ah, yes. Timothy “vowels are optional” Drake. He’s the most atrocious texter Steph has ever met, and she hates that that makes her feel fond.

He doesn’t bother with Cass. Their conversations happen in full emoji, like modern hieroglyphics. Steph gives herself an 80% chance of correctly deciphering them.

With the rest of them, Tim uses words. Or, well. Something approximate to words, chopping them down to their basest parts. It’s kind of entertaining, especially when it makes both Bruce and Jason furrow their brows in exactly the same way.Not that Steph would ever point that out. She has some sense of self-preservation.

Steph will always be a little bit in love with Tim Drake.

It’s something she’s come to accept about herself, the same way she accepts that her curls will always have a mind of their own, that her stretch marks are here to stay, and that her left knee will always ache before it rains.

She also knows that it’s best they stay just friends. Not that that’s a hardship, or anything. Tim is a hell of a lot better friend than he was a boyfriend—though in hindsight, Steph can admit she wasn’t a stellar girlfriend, either. They were young and dumb—or, well, younger and dumber—and now their history was too fraught to ever think about trying again.

Steph loves being Tim’s bestie, even when that means biting her tongue about his relationships.

Especially with Jason Todd of all people.

Steph can honestly say she never saw that coming.

Like, sure, okay. He’s hot. Steph can admit that, she’s got eyes.

He’s the kind of guy you could actually climb like a tree—tall and broad and thick to boot, with thighs made for biting and pecs Steph is pretty sure would fit nicely in one of her bras. He’s also handsome, in a rugged sort of way, with his twice broken nose and the scar curving up his cheek and his full, kissable lips. His curls always manage to be perfect, too—artfully messy, even when he falls asleep on the couch or takes off that helmet of his.

It’s enviable, really.

Some day she’ll ask him his secret.

But… Steph always kind of saw him as a walking bad idea. The kind of guy baby Steph would have adored, which… Steph loves baby Steph—or she’s trying to—but she had shit taste in men. And Jason, with his leather jackets and guns and daddy issues (and mommy issues too, come to think of it)—

He certainly fit the bill.

Except—

Despite all outward appearances… Jason is a good guy. He’s smart, and funny, and passionate, and kind, and—

Ugh.

Steph kind of hates him a little.

Because, like. Steph can handle thinking about Jason sometimes, in a not-so-friendly, maybe-a-little-bit-sexy way. Tim, too—or even both of them together. Maybe sometimes it gets a little awkward but… Fantasizing is human, and Steph is an adult. She can picture them fucking her and each other six ways to Sunday, doing whatever the raunchiest part of her brain cooks up, and still behave normally around them after.

She’s a grown woman. Her hormones are not the fucking boss of her.

So. Attraction? Handled. Steph has that shit on lock.

What she cannot handle is—Feelings.

Music videos and song lyrics are fictional storytelling. So other than in his music videos and song lyrics. Can you give me an example where Harry has expressed interest in group sex or polyamory?

Tabloids and twitter spin narratives. Other than reports from tabloids or twitter likes. Have Harry ever shown sexual chemistry with a woman? Looked visibly attracted to a woman? Checked someone out? Stared too long? Gotten flustered around a woman?

If he's sex obsessed why have we never seen him with a hard on? He's around beautiful women all the time?

Why would they go for an image of a virale man who attracts everybody and will sleep with anybody? Who is into female orgasm? When his target audience is young hormone filled females? Beats me.

If Harry was tied up in a long term stable relationship with a woman, would you then have a chance of you being his next conquest? If he's with someone else he can't be with you. He can if he's switching partners every now and then and he'd be down to have a go with you because he's sexually explorative. And if you're lucky you're the one who captures his heart, changes his ways and locks him down.

I think you might be right that there was maybe something going until the end of May 2012 but I always thought the “Cruel Summer” and “august” referred to summer 2014 because of the Style MV snippets where Taylor is wearing the same outfit she wore August 1st 2014… I also believe he was inconsistent then and that’s when “the growing resentment” started at having to keep everything a secret… I believe after trying to be in a serious relationship at the end of 2012 and going public, Harry didn’t want a repeat of that and kept being unsure (first verse of Question…?) so Taylor just sort of moved on with Calvin. (Her Clean speeches at the 1989 tour were also really bitter at times…)

I absolutely agree that there was something happening in the summer of 2014, but I don’t think that’s what is being described in Cruel Summer. She tells us in the chorus “it’s new, she shape of your body”; I think she knew it pretty well two years later! This sounds like heady infatuation which she realized was love, and that’s those early days with the “shiny toy with a price/you know that I bought it”. You can hear him echoing these same feelings (though he’s more willing to admit he is in love) in TMH songs from early summer 2012 like Magic and They Don’t Know About Us. Or when he looks back years later in Adore You and WS and Sunflower vol 6.

FWIW - I think the “sad boy” really has to do with how misunderstood Harry was. He wasn’t just some lothario; he has a huge heart and wanted to be seen and loved (ideally by her).

The stuff you’re talking about, the struggles in summer 2014 might have had to do with their inability to shift into a more mature relationship mode. She explores it in Coney Island, while he starts to in Two Ghosts and (unreleased) Hunger.

I am not actually sure it was Harry who wanted to keep things secret, or more that he was the primary driving force in the 2013-early 2015 on-and-off era. I think he was willing to do whatever Taylor wanted to protect her and her image. This included *erasing himself from the narrative of his friendship with one of his very best friends*, Ed, so Taylor could claim that ground. And it must sting. The GP thinks they dated for like 1 month at the end of 2012, while it was and has always been so much more for him.

For him, I would say he figured they’d give it a real, mature shot once 1D was on hiatus. That was why he was hesitating. But Taylor wanted stuff sooner, and maybe not the uncertainty he could then offer at about-to-turn-21. And he didn’t fully understand the misogyny and pressure she was facing. He thought “our love is enough” and it really wasn’t.

I love Taylor so much, and she is so astute and insightful, but she is also an unreliable narrator. I think some of those Clean speeches were to convince herself she’d done the right thing (or to placate CH). Frankly, she did the same thing with her fabled, perfect love with YB. She is showing us cracks now, when for years all she’d write about was the magical hand touch that started it all. Controlling the narrative is really important to her (for her own perceived safety) but in this case Harry and his feelings were unintentional collateral damage.

What I find interesting is that both Tae and Jk are doing something ‘new’ in comparison to BTS as a whole and that no other member has done. Tae’s obvious Taennie stuff, while no member has ever even mentioned a partner before. And Jk’s explicit version is also way more explicit than I’d have thought, it being a non-personal song and very much being a man-woman mv. They do want people to think about Jk and women with this song and that’s exactly what WS did (and still does) for Harry.
