Oh WOW! The newest WTF podcast episode with Jesse David Fox is an absolute must-listen for comedy nerds like myself.
And Marc Maron dropped a fun tidbit I had NEVER heard before: He had asked Bo Burnham to direct his comedy special! 🤯
Tumblr media
Here's my transcription of Maron on Bo and his brilliance:
You had, you frame it in the final, the beginning of the latest, uh, version of what you would call alternative comedy and it has its place, but you know, outside of Bo Burnham, who I think had out of all of them as, as a comedic visionary. Well, he's the guy.
You know, like that thing he did during the pandemic and also all his stuff. That this is a guy that takes emotional risk, but also is insanely talented, like you said.
And intellectually, uh, up for the challenge...And I asked Bo to direct my last one just cuz I thought well maybe you could do something interesting with me because I'm actually a fucking bleeding wound half the time, but he was polite and said he was in a deal with Netflix. Why would he want to? I was condescending to him.
So that was exciting to hear! Maron and Jesse also go into Rothaniel and the contentious interview with Jerrod Carmichael, the art form of the special irself, and what vulnerability is in comedy.
Tumblr media
Highly recommended, and I now have to read the book knowing Jesse discusses some of my favorite comedians (and calls Maria Bamford one of the best of all time—love it)!
Tumblr media
Enjoy the podcast, and keep it here for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Hello :3
Would you be able to point me to the interview that you posted quotes from? The one where Austin uses waves as an analogy for grief. It's so genuine and sweet, and I'd love to hear/see/read it in full 😊

Saying Hello.
Marc Maron’s WTF podcast newsletter October 31st 2022
Mystical, People. I try to wrangle my mind as much as possible. It does wander. Predictable places and patterns. Usually not otherworldly. It will make some random connections and try to make sense of things that are beyond comprehension. I don’t want to drift. I’ve been delusional before. Something happened in Ireland. As many of you know that last time I was there was with Lynn. We both had some unexplained draw to the country. It held a magical space for both of us. Separately. It was something we found out we shared when we got to know each other. We both wanted to be there. The trip we took was after we went to the Gijón Film Festival in Spain. We spent almost two weeks in the country at two different houses. It was beautiful. It was the first and only time we traveled together. Going back I knew that the memories would be difficult. I knew that her absence would be felt. I stayed at the same hotel we stayed at in Dublin. I have pictures of her there. I could see where I took the picture. I could see her absence. I took a picture of a bench where she sat, empty. I have played at Vicar Street many times. I like the venue. I liked the crowd. They were great last Wednesday. As I made my way through the act it was all going over great. Then I came to the part where I switch tones, go a bit deeper and talk about grief and Lynn’s passing. Toward the end of the main piece from that section which describes the day she died the stage lights started fluctuating, going on and off. It was jarring. The audience felt it. It happened just as I was talking about her death and kept happening for five minutes. I said, ‘Hey, Lynn. Hi, baby.’ My eyes started tearing up. The audience was emotional. When I got off stage the lighting person said that had never happened before. When I got back to my hotel room I walked in, turned on the lamp on the desk and the bulb fizzled out. I said, ‘Ok, Lynn. I miss you too. I’m glad you’re here. You wanted to be here.’ I had to invest these moments with the mystical meaning they commanded. I had to look at them as good magic. I had to believe she was just saying hello and that she was there. That is where she resides now. Ireland. That is where she wanted to be, that is where she is. Why not?

'"Oppenheimer" continues to thrill audience members around the world.
Christopher Nolan's biopic on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, goes deep into the physicist's psyche, presenting viewers with an intimate view of the man who changed the world. "Oppenheimer" is a true epic, spanning several years, showing the American scientist during his early days in academia, to the successful atomic bomb test, and the fallout of his invention which manifests shortly after. It's a lot to digest, especially for cinemagoers, as the three-hour runtime forces viewers to examine Oppenheimer from all different angles.
As daunting as the film is for viewers, who have to brace Nolan's longest film to date, can only imagine how difficult of an experience it was for the actors involved. Note that "Oppenheimer," which spans several decades, was shot in less than two months. "We made the movie unbelievably quickly. We made it in 57 days," Cillian Murphy, the actor in the titular role told Marc Maron on his "WTF" podcast. "The pace of that was insane." With such a swift production, one can imagine the shoot to be a blur. After all, the production was hopping from location to location, filming in states like New Mexico and California to complete the film.
For Murphy, however, he distinctively remembers what his favorite part of the production was. "But the section of the movie that I loved working on the most was the section in the room, in 2022, when we were all in the hearing," the Irish actor told Collider. "We shot in this tiny, [expletive] little room." Murphy is, of course, talking about the scenes which make up a bulk of the film's exposition: the Oppenheimer security hearing, which shows the scientist arguing to keep his security clearance.
Cillian Murphy shot the Oppenheimer security hearing sequence over two weeks
A huge portion of "Oppenheimer" focuses on the security hearing. The scenes are presented throughout the film, showing several of Oppenheimer's (Murphy) colleagues coming in to testify either in or against his favor. While continuing his chat with Collider, Murphy opened up about the security hearing's set and how it was devoid of any Hollywood glamour. "There weren't any moveable walls or anything like that; it was just all of us in there with this huge camera," the actor said, comparing production on the sequence to that of a play. "We did that for two weeks, so all these incredible actors, Jason Clarke and everybody, would come in and do their piece," the actor continued.
It shouldn't be surprising that a decent portion of production was spent on the security hearing considering it's one of the most pivotal experiences in Oppenheimer's life. While "Oppenheimer" is a biopic and does take creative liberties, Nolan and his team ensured that the security hearing was as authentic as possible. The scenes which are shown in the film are directly lifted from the transcripts of the real hearing, making them all the more jarring and daunting to witness on the big screen.
The sequence is equally special because it allows audiences to see characters from throughout the film react to the atomic bomb's fallout, allowing them to truly speak their mind about Oppenheimer's beliefs. It's hard to imagine "Oppenheimer" being so effective without the security hearing as a pivotal narrative device and Murphy knows that. "I found that very emotional and heavy, but in a brilliant way," Murphy added in his chat with the outlet. "It was a real challenge. So, that was my favorite chunk of the movie in terms of shooting."'

By asking Michael Mann questions that other filmmakers would avoid due to professional courtesy, Marc Maron is able to get get Mann to open up in a way I’ve never heard in previous shorter form interviews. It’s a reminder at how great Maron is as an interviewer and how masterful Mann is as a writer and director. I highly recommend to any films of Mann’s oeuvre.

still in denial and stronger than ever
[ID: Magnus Archives fanart. The first piece is on a parchment-colored background which matches the transcript page. Martin and Jon lie together while embracing, Jon on top of Martin and half-hiding his face in his chest. Martin looks at him and says sadly via text taken from the transcripts, "Martin: And you have to promise me you’re going to do everything in your power to live. That you’re not going to sacrifice yourself at the first opportunity, just because you feel guilty about what happened." Jon looks away and replies, "Archivist: … I promise."
The second is toned in green light. The background shows Jon as a floating silhouette in front of a bright green eye. Martin stands in the foreground like he's taking a selfie, smiling with his glasses opaque while crying, and a Snapchat caption says, "jon is such a silly goose ahaha". End ID]
