A bit random, but do you happen to have any personal particular feelings about railroads and trains, particularly in a magical sense? I am living in a train town now and wondering what to make of it like spiritually and energetically
For a while, I worked in an active rail yard. My answer prior to that employment would be drastically different than after.
At the time, I was trying not to be wooish at all. But now, looking back? Rail yards are wooish as fuck and are not only an ecosystem unto themselves, but have a personhood that I will fight anyone that claims otherwise.
I wasn't a conductor nor an engineer. Just a clerk. A "gopher". Go fer this, go fer that, take this crew, deliver these goods. But it meant I drove, walked, and sometimes crawled all over that yard. I knew where it was safe to drive and where that barely concealed well hole was. I always had a sense of which engines were moving and where were the safe spaces when the runaway car alarm sounded (spoiler: nowhere in the fucking yard, that's for sure).
When I had a new clerk shadowing me for training, after going over what the book said, I would tell them what I've learned the hard way. Which tracks were never safe to walk and why you never park your car under that particular tree in the parking lot no matter how much shade it gives. What kind of sounds you expect to hear at 2am in the rail yard and which sounds should not only have you moving quickly to a safe area but also calling the yardmaster because there might be a bigger problem than anticipated.
Certain trains had certain personalities. I'm sure the engines did for sure, but I didn't work in the roundhouse so I was never acquainted with any particular engine. But there were certain dedicated routes from one city to another, cross-country, and certain trains always had certain problems regardless of the crew or engine. My job involved getting the crew's paperwork for those trains so I saw certain patterns after a while. I'm sure each observation could be explained individually, and when I was working there, I accepted the mundane explanations at face value.
But as for the rail yard itself?
Haunted.
Embodied.
And because of the trauma that happened to even make the rail yard and the way it can and will devour the careless: Feral.
Looking back, I can see that the rail yard accepted me as part of the ecosystem within it. Moments that went better for me than expected and a certain sense of... presence... during those times when I was the only person within the literal mile. By the time I left that employment, it had given me gifts that I still keep with me. Especially now that I know what they mean.
But that's my story.
You have a different perspective.
I would advise you to treat the rail yard itself as a person. The tracks are its arteries and the yard crew are its blood cells. The roundhouse is its liver and stomach while the main tower is its brain.
Respect it. Don't go climbing past the fences and ducking under chains. Once you become accustomed to the sounds of an active rail yard, it is very easy for a train engine to bear down on you with little warning.
You likely won't get timetables of which trains are traveling through on which routes, but you can sit a safe distance away and just... listen. Feel. Trains don't want to sit in one spot, they want to move.
Commuter/passenger trains want to be looked at as they pass. Freight trains just want you to get out of the damn way. The feeder trains that carry stuff to and from the local industries tend to have more character to them.
When it's night, listen for the trains. Not just their horns, but the sound of their wheels on the tracks. When it's cold and damp, that sound will eerily carry over miles and miles. The trains will sing, sometimes to each other in greeting and sometimes to themselves. Sit long enough and you'll hear the difference between a train singing because it's required to sound off at a crossing, and a train singing because the acoustics are just right and not all howling comes from wolves.
If you decide to leave offerings, don't leave anything that would be a mess for a yard crew to clean up. The yard crew is an extension of the rail yard after all, and annoying them will set the yard itself against you.
Greet the trains when they cross the road in front of you. Listen to how they sound in the wake of their passing. The rail yard will teach you its language.
And if you go for a walk one day and happen to come across a railroad spike in an area no spike should be, that's not happenstance, that's a gift. If you take it, you're part of that rail yard's ecosystem now, even if your role is that of spectator and observer. Hold it and let the song of the rails rumble through you. It might lead you to something else.
Take care.

MP 4536, Texarkana, AR
We are looking west at what I thought may be L936 off of the Bonham Sub arriving in track #18 at Texarkana, but surely that "candy striper" hydrocyanic acid car second out did not come off the branch, so this is likely a cut of cars is being pulled out to class by the north end yard job? But the yard job usually works with a single GP38/38-2. Puzzling to say the least. The MRS car in fresh paint looks good, and the yardmaster's tower can be seen on the left. This was a Sunday morning and looks like L930 may be building in #9.

You, "sir yardmaster"! Does your yard have an infrastructure for supporting electric trains? I hope I can visit you all someday, but I need to know if my Pantographs will have glamorous energy lines around there!
Unfortunately no. That is why when you read about Union Pacific having 'electric' trains they are either. Diesel-battery electric plug ins or simply battery electric plug ins. It isn't even many plug ins. We will have about 20 and they will be switchers or local freight runners. There is no chance for them to be main line haulers. There are no lines above.
There used to be plans for it before I was even manufactured and some were built but the market proved diesels were better for the US and so we had the lines torn down.
However the diesels do generate multiple megawatts of power. I myself could generate around 5.2 megawatts of power if I needed to. 'Diesel engines' are rolling electric generators. So if you can plug into us somehow with a power cable, then you could work in tandem with one of our diesels

A Screech on the Night Ch:4
Ch.4 Dawnbreak
Other Chapters
The sun slowly peaked over the hills, the light breaking through slowly to light the sky in brilliant colours as Screech raced down the line. Snow flew to the side as she flew through the dawnlight. In the warmth of her cab, Gwyn worked hard to keep the steam up as Freda managed the regulator.
Screech felt alive in a way she hadn't since...she couldn't remember. The last few years she'd spent alive had hardly been living. The gas axe hanging over her kind had made her feel as if she had already been scrapped, her body just hadn't caught up. But this, racing through the morning with a heavy train...this was what she was meant for.
The whisper was quiet. Unable to compete with the joy of running again, of being useful again.
She approached a sleepy station and yard, the faded name Henaint visible on the sign. She felt Freda grab her whistle cord and her whistle sounded out through the early morning, howling out across the hills and through the wind like a tortured soul.
Throughout the town, dogs raised their heads at the sound and joined in, the humans trembling in their homes from the otherworldly chorus.
As Screech shot past the town and into the hills beyond, the sun finally broke the night's hold and crested the horizon, causing the landscape into stark relief as she raced onward.
Southward she charged, livestock and wildlife alike scattering at the black beast's approach. As she crested the tallest hill, the land was laid out before her, mountains glistened with snow in the distance, rivers carved through the land like the great snakes of old, and lakes shone like mirrors in the dawnlight.
"Ppeeeeeeeeppppp"
Screech couldn't have held back the elated whistle as she thundered down the hill if she wanted. Birds stormed from the treetops in terror at the sound, wheeling in disarray above her.
Still, she raced onwards, the fish vans behind her swaying with her speed. She grinned as a tunnel grew in her vision. Shrieking her whistle like a lost soul, she plunged into the darkness, before all too soon she popped out the other side.
A viaduct spanned a valley, a river surging its banks with melted snow far below. Her whistle echoed out from the tunnel into the valleys below.
She thundered back onto solid ground and soared forward along the rails, steam billowing behind her like a cloak in the dawning light.
Finally, a caution signal showed, and she slowed, gliding effortlessly into Din as the sun chased away the last vestiges of dawn. She stopped at the end of the unloading platform, the end of the train stretching out into the yard. On the platform, workers stared in awe and fear at the beast of shadow and steam before them, but Screech took no notice.
She panted happily from her exertion, it had been so long. She hadn't pulled a train like that in years.
Gywn patted her cab as he climbed down, "Well done! Well done indeed! Our longest train yet, and early too."
Screech's smug smile was interrupted by the arrival of the yard manager.
"Jones you old bat!" He clasped Gwyn's hand as he walked up. "Only you could find a Night Owl just as we need her. Where did you find this beauty?"
"I'm afraid she's just passing through and agreed to lend us a hand, she's to be off once this is unloaded."
The yardmaster's face fell. "Oh...well...Abbey will just have to make do then." The two men looked at each other uncertainly, both clearly uncomfortable with pushing their Star any further.
The yardmaster shook his head, "there's nothing for it," he sighed before turning to Screech. "Thank you my lady for your help. The Lord knows Abbey needs what rest she can get." He gently laid a hand on her running board. Much like the Jones, nothing happened to his hand other than gaining a coating of soot. "We thank you, lass. We owe you more than you know. If you ever need shelter again, our shed is open."
He rubbed her buffer beam, closing his eyes and sighing, before walking away.
'Revenge' the whisper returned quietly, flashing images of London across her mind, but they were quickly swept away by the memory of the strained Star class sleeping fitfully in her shed.
"Do you have a train that needs pulling?"
The words were out before she realised she'd made a decision. Her voice echoing through the yard, filling every nook and crevice of the yard with a twisted siren's call, the vans rattling in its reverberation.
The yardmaster stopped and looked back at her in bemusement
"Yesterday's vans need to be taken back to Uman. The line has to be clear by 7 so the Express can leave on time." Then once it's left we need to collect from the quarries along the line, bringing their loads here, before returning with..."
He trailed off, lost in the problems of trying to make it with his few engines.
'No,’ the whisper pleaded, but its tone told her it already knew it had lost.
The former Great Western  No.4702 shifted her wheels mightily.
"Where is my train then."
As the crews stared at her with dawning hope in their eyes, she smirked.
"My old driver would have my frames if he were to ever learn I left you in need. I have disappointed many, but never him...and I don't intend to start now."
Gwyn was already uncoupling her from the morning pike as cheers rang out through the yard.

Unstoppable (2010)
Tumblr media
No matter how spectacular or unbelievable, real events need a few key qualities to be worthy of a film adaptation. The real-life CSX 8888 incident meets all the criteria. With two charismatic leads, loads of twists and turns that raise the stakes and some good old-fashioned thumbing at the man, Unstoppable packs a lot of entertainment in its 98-minute running time.
At the Fuller Yard in northern Pennsylvania, the engineer (Ethan Suplee) jumps out of his locomotive to change an incorrectly aligned track, accidentally leaving the unattended train with the throttle at full speed. By the time yardmaster Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson) realizes they have a runaway train filled with explosive materials barreling down the track, the only people who might be able to stop it are veteran railroad engineer Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington) and Will Colson (Chris Pine), a young train conductor.
If there’s one aspect of the film that will make or break it for you, it’s Tony Scott’s trademark, frenetic camerawork. There are constantly helicopters circling the 777 locomotive and the film is often shot from the perspective of a news reporter on one of those helicopters, which means there are a lot of unsteady shots, particularly when things get intense. Although I can’t say I was too fond of this choice, news footage-like camerawork is appropriate for a film based on true events. There are small bits of writing here and there that might also rub you the wrong way (the ultimate fate of the man who left his post, for example) but they’re minor issues when we consider everything the film does well.
Denzel Washington and Chris Pine are great as the heroes. Both of the actors have charisma to spare and play well off of each other. Each is given their own miniature story (with everything that’s going on with the train there’s not much room for too much else) and their own arcs together as a team. It’s just enough for you to care about them and worry about whether they will save the day… even before you realize the magnitude of the disaster that awaits everyone should they fail to stop the train. They seem like imperfect but perfectly relatable guys, the kind you could easily see at your weekend BBQ. The same can’t be said about the higher-ups we see throughout the film. Some might say they’re over-the-top but from my experience in the workforce, they're not so exaggerated. Even before the movie starts you wouldn’t be surprised to hear that AWVR’s vice-president won’t listen to Frank and Will and within the movie, you understand why, which makes him less cartoonish - though no less sympathetic.
We have a decent foundation with the great actors and easily grokable characters but ultimately, this film is about the train and the peril it represents. This is the kind of movie that’s always throwing some new wrench at our protagonists. Once Unstoppable gets going, it just never stops… sort of like the train itself. Thankfully, our heroes are smart and resourceful. Their plans always seem more likely to succeed than the ones the authorities propose. Seriously, some of the tactics they come up with are so ridiculous and obviously flawed that you’d laugh them off the screen… if this was a work of pure fiction.
Unstoppable would be a great movie to sit down and watch with your dad. It’s got plenty of tension, the stakes are high, the antagonists are easy to dislike, you’re eager to cheer for the heroes, and the energy throughout makes its running time fly by like nothing. It’s just an all-around solid piece of entertainment. (On Blu-ray, January 14, 2022)

🌌☄️🍁📎 for Bernadette!
🌌-What was the inspiration behind your oc? What was the first thing you decided about them?
I based her a lot on Beatrice Horseman, including her lipstick and tendency to smoke. I wanted to give her that old hollywood actress vibe, and I think her name and personality do good w that. Her being an agent was inspired by Princess Carolyn, I was on a Bojack Horseman binge when coming up with her.
☄-What do people assume about them? Are they right?
Folks assume that due to her job and general attitude, she is heartless. They’re somewhat right, she is a lot less sympathetic towards people, and many would call her toxic. In reality, she’s hardened from her own time as a racing coach, so she has little care for the “Woes” of champion racers.
🍁- What is their favorite season? Why?
Summer and Autumn. The main racing seasons, good for business!
📎- A random fact.
She has a wife! A Diesel named Domino. They have a few kids, but due to Domino’s status as a Yardmaster and Bernadette’s very public job, they have to keep it pretty private. Trains may accept same sex relationships, but humans in the 80s definitely didn’t.

Unstoppable (2010) - REVIEW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS
Denzel Washington and Chris Pine chase down and take on a runaway train.
youtube
I think it's pretty clear what Unstoppable sounds like on paper; a big, dumb, over the top action movie designed to keep you entertained on a Friday night rather and nothing more. Sound familiar? Unstoppable does sort of fit into that sort of mould but what helps set it apart for a start is that it doesn't feel like your typical action film. While there are certainly unlikeable and culpable people to dislike and root against there isn't a villain to overcome unless you consider the train (777) as such. Yes there are dysfunctional family dynamics but none feature too prominently or need saving, there are no gun battles, no malicious crimes being committed, there's no revenge that needs seeking out. Unstoppable has none of those familiar tropes that you would expect from a standard action movie; in fact it could be argued that Unstoppable is more of a disaster movie dressed up as an action thriller. This is the result of the late Tony Scott's experienced craftmanship and he's left us a final film that is slick, efficient and thrilling from start to finish.
Tumblr media
Inspired by a real event, the premise is simple and occurs from a believable set of circumstances; human error and stupidity. The film is also very efficient with its time and that comes down mostly to the edit. In the early stages the film frequently diverts from character to character while the events involving 777 are kept at the centre. With body language and just a few scenes of dialogue, it doesn't take the audience long to figure out who serves what purpose from Rosario Dawson's capable and focused yardmaster Connie Hooper to Kevin Dunn's corporate minded vice-president Oscar Galvin. The actors do a great job making their normal, everyday working characters feel just that. While the stakes are clearly laid out in the form of 777's dangerous cargo, the mismatched old vs. new pairing of Denzel Washington's Frank Barnes and Chris Pine's Will Caulson is what gives the film its humanity. Both have small side arcs running alongside the main story but never overtake it; Barnes is facing forced retirement while Caulson is dealing with an estrangement from his young wife. These relatable issues keep these characters grounded and give them a basis to finally form a bond, an understanding and ultimately a partnership that drives them to chase down 777. Their mismatched chemistry plus Washington and Pine's star power is enough to make them both likeable and believable unlikely heroes.
Tumblr media
Unstoppable is still an action thriller however and going in you will know what sort of discussions will be had and what sort of decisions will be taken by higher ups looking to protect their corporate assets. You'll know there'll be multiple attempts to stop 777 along the way that will be doomed to failure until our heroes are forced to come together. Structurally there is nothing new here but at no time does the film fall into cliched territory for me and that is down to Tony Scott's direction. Unstoppable is grounded and gritty with a welcome sense of realism without going too far over the top. The sharp edits also give the film a momentum and pace that makes you feel like you're moving at the same speed as 777. If you were to stop and think about it then you'd never really doubt what's going to happen but the film moves as such a thrilling pace that you can't help but be sucked into the drama and taken along for the ride. This is a go to action film for me, perhaps more so than Mad Max Fury Road, that ticks a very satisfying box.
Tumblr media
VERDICT
Sometimes a straight forward but well made action film is all you need to have a great time. Tony Scott's final film, Unstoppable is that kind of film and has become a frequent go to of mine. Denzel Washington and Chris Pine make for strong leads in a fast paced, efficient and thrilling and joy ride of a film that ticks many boxes and is ultimately a very satisfying experience.

NS 8108?
(baby boyeeee)
(writing below the cut!)
His eyes sparkled as the locomotive pulled up in front of him, then came the Guider. He had raved to the yardmasters and Guiders around him about the time he was on a train with 1070, or the Wabash Heritage Guider. They got along super well, he loved asking him about the railroad and what he knew. Wabash seemed to enjoy his presence too, a passionate Guider is a good Guider.
But this time, it wasn't Wabash. Rather, a Heritage Guider he wanted to talk to. Or just ask about the railroad that came before Norfolk Southern. The Guider wore a special outfit colored black and gold, with red accents. The number on their outfit was 8100.
The Nickel Plate Road Heritage Guider.
They first noticed him excitedly smiling and waving at them like a human child who just got a 5 dollar bill. It... confused them for a bit, but they had experience with railfans fauning over them and the other Heritage Guiders. So, they nodded and began to talk to him.
"You're 8108, the Guider I'll be working with today. It's nice to meet you."
"Nickel, I just want to say what a HUGE honor it is to get to work with a Heritage Guider. The Nickel Plate Road is SO COOL!!"
"You say that about every railroad that came before us. But it's true... I guess we were a cool railroad, but if anything that title should go to railroads like the Norfolk and Western."
"ALL of Norfolk Southern's predecessor railroads are really awesome! Their history is so intriguing, the paint schemes are really cool, and some of them were labeled as some of the best railroads in the country! Dear Jupiter I wanna meet 765 so badly- can you think of how amazing it would be to talk to him!? Or any of his siblings... Maybe at some point I can go to Bellevue and talk to 757! Can you imagine how cool that'd be!?"
They just chuckled as they boarded their Maverick, then looked over at him with a gentle smile.
"You know the Heritage Guiders keep all records of the railroads that came before us? I'm pretty sure the Lehigh Valley Guider still has some records of when-"
"YOU GUYS HAVE ARCHIVES OF THE RAILROAD'S PREDECESSORS!?"
"Mhm! I could always show you some of them after we're done."
"Oh, PLEASE DO!"
"Then if we get this train delivered on time and without any mishaps... I'd be happy to show you what I have of the Nickel Plate."

I am curious and would like your own answeres any of to these:
How old do you HC Rusty to be? Why that age? Is he like humans or like machinery? What does the railroad or the humans think about this? Does he still do yard switching? If he eventually runs passenger service, is he still rusted? Do the humans feel safe around such a rusty engine pulling them? Or is he restored? Also tell me if I can ask you more questions!
Personally, the Rusty I knew was OLD and that is why he is rusty. His name was Smuts but we used Rusty because "We are doing you a favor, scrapbucket"... He was older than my yardmaster, who was around 50 when I was made, and even wolder than Poppa. Technically Rusty's frame is older than his own ai! We don't age or grow up like humans. We are perpetually the age we were manufactured at. So he has a young appearance and behavior despite the rust. He however was completely restored via Starlight's magic but he still worked as a yard switcher because the race does not decide the job he does (which he thought it did)

"THE RUSH OF GRAIN MEANS SWIFT WORK," Toronto Star. October 4, 1913. Page 5. ---- Seven Samples of Grain Taken From Each Carload of Western Wheat. ---- "STABBING" A HARD JOB ---- Each Little Sample Laid Out on a Piece of Canvas - Winnipeg's Great Task. ---- Winnipeg. Oct. 4. - The rush of wheat goes on. The samplers in the railway yards work in groups of 13 and shifts of eight hours each. The men are divided over the work as follows: One man checks the numbers and opens the cars, eight men are employed in stabbing the cars, one man takes the sample bags, another closes and seals the car, and the last man carries the bags to the yard inspection office of the Grain Exchange, and one man is in charge of each group. The men who do the stabbing of the cars have the hardest work, as the cars are being filled to the absolute limit of weight, which leaves very little room, and it is no light undertaking to stab one of these cars to the absolute bottom in seven different places and keep it up for eight hours. Each sample as it is drawn out in the stabber is laid out on a piece of canvas. In this way it is possible to detect instantly if a car has been plugged. After the seven samples have been drawn the whole are mixed together, and from them the five-pound sample taken for the inspection office. The work is so perfectly organized that it is rare for more than six minutes to be taken to
The Busiest Man. Hector J. McLean, who is foreman in charge of sampling, has been with the Dominion Grain Inspection Department for twelve years, and for the past three has had entire supervision of the handling of all grain passing through the Canadian Pacific and Canadian Northern terminals at Winnipeg. He is a qualified grain inspector, but more than that he is a man with a genius for hard work.
One day recently the C. P. R. made a new record in terminal movement, namely, 5,014 cars in and out in one day. This probably is the biggest record of any sorting terminal in the world for the same time. There are yards, which are known as terminal yards, where trains come in and simply change engines and cabooses and go out again, but every train coming into the C. P. R. yards is sorted and remade. In ten hours 38 trains were despatched, a crew being called every 20 minutes. The grain trains coming in from the West run from 50 to 60 cars each, though one train of 68 cars of wheat alone was received, these cars being $3,000 capacity. East of Winnipeg it is not possible to haul such large trains, and trains are made up to capacity of grade, so that they may rush right through to the head of the lakes; and 41 80,000 pounds' capacity cars is the average of the train eastward from Winnipeg. The overhead bridge across the yard was crowded with spectators on Sunday afternoon, watching the cease- less movement of trains over the hump tracks.
The Yardmasters. A yardmaster occupies at once one of the most difficult and important positions in the whole railroad operation. The general yardmaster in a terminal like Winnipeg is a "kingpin," for if he falls down on his job, the steady flow of Western grain is at once checked, and all kinds of complications would follow. Needless to say, there is no falling down on the jib in Winnipeg this year, as the daily movement of cars in and out is abundant testimony.
The public have grown so accustomed to efficient railway service, that the stupendous movement is hardly appreciated, and, in fact, Westerners have grown so accustomed to growling at the railroads that they seldom stop to think that in spite of some imperfections and to high freight tariffs, the Canadian West has one of the most wonderful transportation systems in the world, length and haul and climatic conditions considered. The enormous amount of detail which must necessarily go to the perfect handling of such an immense number of cars (the greater part of which are handled on single tracks) demands not only men of thoroughness and reliability, but also men with "a vision."
The men in subordinate positions work in shifts of eight hours, but the general yardmaster of terminals, when the Western grain rush is on, works practically 24 hours a day, for though he goes through the ceremony of retiring at night, he does so with a telephone at his ear, and if any unforeseen contingency arises he is more likely to be found in the yards at three in the morning than he is in his bed.
