Revisiting Gakuen Handsome: Backstory + short review
I think every BL fan has seen something related to Gakuen Handsome at some point in their lives, it's a parody BL visual novel with quite the legacy. It was originally released in 2010 by Team YokkyuFuman and it also got its own OVA and anime adaptation in 2015 & 2016. The protagonist, who is an unnamed seventeen year old boy, moves back to the city after a seven year absence. He enrolls into Baramon High School, a prestigious all-boys school which takes pride in being the best of its prefecture. From now on, his life will be changed forever...

First of all, the developer team's backstory is probably one of the most unique ones. In 2008, eight film students from the Tohoku University of Art and Design formed Team YokkyuFuman (チーム欲求腐満). Their blog mentions that a year later, they attempted to submit the Gakuen Handsome opening movie to the 9th edition of the Niconico Film Festival (their submission was completely ignored). After that, the opening movie was uploaded on NicoNico Douga, where it was quite well received. The description of the video mentions “to be released in 20009”, as they originally probably had no intention to create a full game.
After it became a hot topic on NicoNico Douga, their university gave them permission to organize an official exhibition: Gakuen Handsome Matsuri (or just Gakuen Handsome Festival). Visitors could watch the opening movie, learn more about the characters and take pictures together with the life-sized cardboard cutouts. The exhibition also featured rare merch: A drama CD which would be released in "20009" and canned bread.

This exhibition was apparently not only held once, but many times according to their blog. The game was finally released in 2010 and many fans were happy to finally play it, supporting the team that created it. Togo Mito, who many of you know as the creator of (in)famous BL game Hadaka Shitsuji, also collaborated with them. These are some pictures I found on Togo Mito's old blog, Mizoguchi and Juro drawn by Togo Mito and the Hadaka Shitsuji cast drawn by Team YokkyuFuman.

Even after graduation, it seems like they would occasionally invite some of Gakuen Handsome's creators. In 2014, the university tweeted that they would not be able to host the exhibition that year due to renovations, but visitors could take pictures with the cardboard cutouts. There's also an interview from 2016 on the university's website, in which they talk about how things have been after graduation! I absolutely love how the university supported all of this.

Now about the game itself... Where to even start? You'll have to trust me, but the game is actually good. Many parody games can be quite a hit or miss, but this visual novel is something I still catch myself laughing at years later. The inconsistent art, pointy chins and strange jokes really create an experience unlike anything else. I don't think any commercial company would be able to create something like this, even if they tried. One detail that the anime adaptation doesn't really show is that many different artists worked on this, whose styles widely vary from each other, making absolutely no attempt to create one consistent artstyle. Most characters have at least 2 ~ 3 sprites that often look completely different from each other. For example, sometimes Saionji sensei looks like a clean-shaven teenager/young adult, but in the CGs he suddenly turn into an older looking man with a stubble.

Yes he's talking about eating paint in the screenshot above, why not. Anyway... the voice acting in this game is something else I wanted to talk about, because it adds so much to the game. Of course it's not professional, but I think that's what makes it amazing. You can sometimes hear the voice actors trying really hard not to laugh, and they will occasionally completely mess up their lines. Of course all of those lines are kept in the game and they didn't re-record them. I also loved it when they started swearing in English for seemingly no reason. Also, instead of just avoiding the name of the protagonist (who you can give any name you want) they pronounce it... by improvision. Just imagine how one would try to pronounce a "adfgdf" keysmash and you'll get an idea what it sounds like.

There are 6 characters in this game who you can romance. The protagonist's childhood friend Takuya, who is a bit obsessed with the protein bar Calorie Mate (which is censored in the new version of the game, so you just hear a BLEEP sound), outlaw teacher Saionji, school principal Juro who basically only functions as a save point, student council president Kagami, chuunibyou transfer student Shiga, and last but not least, the captain of the soccer team Mitsurugi, who also murders people with his chin sometimes. The protagonist's sister also has a (non-romantic) ending, which you need to play in order to unlock the extra scenario (which... is a ridiculous murder mystery story for some reason). I also could not find the guide I used a long time ago, so I just looked at some videos on NicoNico to see what others were doing and that worked pretty well...!
My favorite scene is probably still that one scene in Mitsurugi's route, in which he stabs people with his chin. It's also one of the scenes that gets referenced the most in fanart. The context makes it even more ridiculous, Mitsurugi gets really upset that some people like the chunky variant of red bean paste (tsubuan) and decides they should die. After stabbing his teammate and multiple other people he runs outside. The protagonist however, isn't safe either and also gets accused of being a "tsubuan supporter". If you survive though, you get a chance to marry Mitsurugi!

Honestly one of the reasons I wanted to write about this game is because many people only know the OVA and/or anime, but the game is so funny I think everyone should play it if they're interested. I also think the team behind it has such a funny backstory and I love seeing how supportive their university is. Right now the team is still active on their Twitter account and they sometimes create new content. Last year they released Gakuen Handsome Fighters, a short fighting game featuring the Gakuen Handsome characters.
If you are interested in purchasing it, I recommend getting the "Special" edition which can be purchased on DLsite! I couldn't find a working download link anymore of the older version, but I think the creators deserve the support, so I don't regret buying it (it was about 15 USD). It includes the original game and 5 shorter stories which were originally released as smartphone apps. While I think the original game is still the best one, it's fun to explore some of the extra scenarios as well. One of the shorter games takes place in an alternative universe in which the boys live in the Heian period, and for some reason some of the sprites are animated... yeah.

In a deep, dark forest
To begin this blog, I felt it only appropriate to address one of the topics that was the main reason I started this in the first place.
That's right baby we are starting off strong with Kikuo. It should be of no surprise then that Kikuo is my favourite artist, considering I partially dedicated this blog to him and my first post is about his latest song (that you were going to discover as you read on).
So, In a Deep, Dark Forest has finally been uploaded to Spotify after being teased on his Instagram and formally released 2 weeks ago! To be honest, it's felt way more like a month than 2 weeks but also my concept of time has been so fucked up recently. Regardless of that, let's move on to what I really want to say about this song.
(Feel free to give it a listen if you're a passerby or a fan that hasn't heard the song yet so you can gather your own opinions before reading mine)

Again, to no surprise, I LOVE THIS SONG. I never listen to songs on repeat, usually I'll put a few songs in between and then re-listen. HOWEVER I could not help but put it on repeat a few times when It released on Spotify just a little bit ago.
It's classic Kikuo; upbeat yet distorted tempo and whacky little sound effects if you listen carefully. It's why I love his music so much. I've rarely found music artists quite like him and every time I listen to his music, I either find something new or find that I listen to it differently than I last did - if that even makes sense?
But I'm not here to just summarise. After all, I've DEDICATED this blog to my interests. That means I'm doing this properly baby - I'm breaking down every aspect of THIS ONE SONG that I feel like talking about for my own sick pleasure. Ladies and gentlemen, let's properly start the blog.
QI XUAN
For this song Kikuo diverted from his usual use of Hatsune Miku and instead decided to use Qi Xuan as his vocalist. Now I'm fully aware that this is not the first time Kikuo has used Qi Xuan's or another Vocaloid's voice bank - he has dabbled with Stardust Infinity and his song ローディーローディー/ Roadie Roadie features Qi Xuan. I just felt the need to point this out because for the past few years we have seen KIKUOMIKU 1-6 so I was interested to see that he had tried something else for the first time in a while (aside from collabs with Si_ku and Hanatan, etc). Anyway... Qi xuan! I personally think her vocals were amazing for this song. Don't get me wrong, I adore Miku and I absolutely understand why she is one of the most liked vocaloids. She's always amazing for Kikuo's music. This time though Qi Xuan just seemed like a more obvious choice in hindsight. While her voice is still soft (just like Miku), it sounded a bit more lively in somes parts as opposed to Kikuo's Miku usually being pretty deadpan or emotionless. Qi's smooth, more exasperated vocal seems to fit the flowy aspects of this song and make it sound sort of like a tide. Drawing out and then back in. She just has a bit more emotion at parts idk... maybe I'm just way too used to the atypical Kikuo Miku that hearing something different feels more realistic in terms of making it sound like an actual person.
COVER ART
From what I understand from Kikuo's description on the youtube upload of this song, the artwork was a collaboration between him and Si_ku. Which like.... HELLO?! When was the last time Kikuo drew one of his own album or single covers? And to do a collab with his star artist Si_ku? MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN I say. I absolutely adore Si_ku and her artstyle and that she is constantly working with Kikuo. Having them work together to make the artwork is just... it's incredible to me. It's got the usual style of Si_ku mixed with that "grimeieness" that Kikuo usually exploits. I've stared at it for so long just looking at the intricate details and colours hidden within all the lines spewing out from the main subject. Imagining Kikuo and Si_ku in the same room making this is so cool to me and IDK MAN I'M JUST FAN-GIRLING SO HARD RN.
INSTAGRAM STORIES
I follow Kikuo on Instagram. As much as it is an annoyance to me, I use Instagram a lot (more than Twitter). Can you imagine my surprise when I saw Kikuo's icon at the top of my screen in the stories bar? The speed at which I clicked was that of mach 20. I. WAS. NOT. DISAPPOINTED. This is probably not the right spot for this segment of the blog but do I care? No. Anywayssss seeing his behind the scenes process and getting casual updates throughout the week was awesome. I've always enjoyed watching him deconstruct his process especially since he doesn't actually know anything about music theory. He just does whatever sounds good to him and it's so garbled but insanely interesting as he explains why he makes the choices he does, how it isn't based on any logic in regards to making music but because of some reason that is akin to his creative process. If that makes sense. I'm sorry if my speech is hard to understand because I'm multi-tasking atm and rereading my sentences doesn't always help me edit. Ok I digress for the millionth time. Kikuo's instagram stories were not something I thought he'd take interest in starting considering that he really just works at his own pace being the NPC he is. Not complaining though and I will happily eat my meal.

I would love to continue but I have lost track of my thoughts because I had a 2 hour interval at one point when writing this because I got distracted ACK. I may do a part two but that is only if I can get my shit together and not have like 5 different people trying to message me at once (I'm grateful for all of you though FR). I READ GO FOR IT AGAIN NAKUAMURA BECAUSE BARNES AND NOBLES HAS SOME GAY SHIT THAT I LIKE!!
Anyway here's a quick review of it. Like quick because I like to think about it to get my feelings towards something right. Like at first I loved Godzilla 2014 and THEN I just kinda liked it weeks later and I want to reread the first volume.
Anyway back to the quick review. It was good and I liked it. Syundei is an amazing artist and Iove the old artstyle the mangaka has which is seen in their other works. Also before you get curious and look into their other work here's a trigger warning.
TW SHIT GETS FUCKED UP
But not in Nakamura not a concerning amount at least. Its just nice, simple and to be honest I completely forget about Hirose since Nakamura is an entertaining character to read and see. Also I guess he is kinda relatable in a lot of ways. A gay student in a practically hetero normative environment is relatable to me or a younger me at least. With a notable moment being where he tries to come to terms with his crush being in a relationship with a girl in the school. (also I'm pretty sure Nakamura gets a bisexual panic attack in the first book which makes me love the guy more)
My man Nakamura looking all serious while practically being in a state of panic internally makes me really root for the guy. What else, what else. Oh! I guess I should mention the concerning amount thing from earlier. Hirose has a crush on his teacher and generally I don't like it when a series does something like that but it would also be hypocritical of me as a certified milf enjoyer. But in retrospect I think its handled a lot better in this series compared to others with Hirose having a one sided crush on a teacher. Hopefully it's one sided again the teacher isn't helping but again if it's a one sided crush cool and if its more I'll probably buy the next volume just to see what would happen.
A small part I do like though is when Nakamura gets a haircut that makes him look completely different to everyone. It's only page BUT for some reason it sticks out.
It's honestly hard to review BL (my name get it) because I don't read a lot of it that doesn't end with fucking at the end if it. And romance is something I try not to touch but I do hope that at some point Syundei does have Nakamura and Hirose actually being a couple and not just ending it after they get together. Which I assume is normal for most romance manga to end when the relationship finally starts. If the first volume is the start of their friendship than it feels like the second is more so exploring Nakamura. I wonder if he's actually gonna go for it next volume so like in a year, and if he does I hope we see the relationship.
This will likely change when I reread volume 1 and 2.

Just watched Ousama Ranking
Yet another example of "Don't judge an anime by its artstyle"
In a world where kings are ranked based on various factors, a deaf and mute young prince named Bojji, deemed un-befitting by many around him to inherit the throne, strives to become a great king.
Imma just watch 1 ep before sleep, see why people say it's the hidden gem of the fall season. *slips off until the episode 5*
Artsyle-wise, it looks like an old time children anime like Doraemon. Story-wise, it feels like Made in Abyss.
By the time I write this (still only 6 episodes available) this is actually less about the ranking and more about Bojji's story.
Bojji sounds like a mash up between Bocchan (坊ちゃん = Boy) and Ouji (王子 = Prince) lol nice.
I know I'm a certified crybaby but man I cry a lot in this series. I think I cry in every episode. Something about it is really hits me with feels really hard. Sometimes it's because of a character's messed up backstory. Sometimes it's because the bonds of a character (Bojji, in this case) with people and animals around him.
I mean kid's deaf and mute, and everytime he's able to connect with someone else, or when people do (or worse, don't) realize he understands what they speak, it just hits me.
Neat storytelling, like it doesn't feel rushed at all and always keeps me wondering what will happen next. And everyone in it is not really what they seem to be at first glance. I mean, if someone can cry all over a goddamn blob with a hand, that blob is such a great character backed with great writing.
The OST is very nice!!
There is this duel with perfect stance + steady swing befitting of a 'noble fighter' vs swift dodging + quick hits likened to a 'cheater.' I like this so much because it's kinda like glory vs practicality, and being the kind of 'if it works, it works' person, I value the latter more.
The opening song is really high up there to me. Idk how to put it, but if you read the lyric, and feel the story, it really clicks. It feels like walking on an open field and it keeps getting brighter and merrier. I love the instrumental parts so much.
While the ED seems to just strive to make me cry.
*Looks at the credits* Holy shit it's WIT Studio again. So soon after Vivy, they made another amazing anime in the same year... Solid respect but man do I hope they are well. I heard they are not doing good recently?
TL;DR it looks like a children story but DEAR GOD this is not a children story.

imagine dazai catching you doodling him with cute little hearts around the page,, and as his lips curved upwards a mild shade of pink dusts his cheeks, admiring you a little bit more before walking towards you quietly, wrapping his arms around your neck from behind. your frame stilled against his loving embrace, the pencil in your hand dropping on the concrete desk, your lover's lips close to your ears... his warm breath hit the back of your ear, kissing it in the process.
"I didn't know you drew me so much, gioia mia~¹" his sweet, teasing voice gently made its way into your eardrum, with you shivering afterward. his soft, umber locks brushed against your tender skin, the warm temperature his body radiated comforting you. your cheeks were probably red by now, and you were certain he already noticed. after all, when does he not?
clearing your throat, you comfortably positioned yourself, closing your eyelids slowly before speaking.
"u-uh, yeah. I, uhm-"
"and they're so well done, my darling! I assumed you were an artist since you always brought a notebook and pencil with you, even in our workplace, but I didn't expect you to draw me... I am flattered, my belladonna~ your artstyle mirrors the way you are... cute!~" your brain couldn't take in his words, and yours were stuck in your throat. all that was left was a stuttering mess whilst you shakingly turned around, with your lover chuckling at your adorable reaction.
dazai could now definitely see how your cheeks gained color, the redness painting them well. noticing your alerted gaze and trembling, he raised his hand to hold your warm cheek, caressing it with his thumb. although your quivering didn't cease, he took a note of how your eyes widened for a second before calming again. his smile broadened as you leaned into his touch, your timid orbs avoiding his loving ones. unfortunately for you, he had other ideas in mind.
and so, he leaned closer.
your eyes snapped back at him, his nose almost touching yours. a small gasp escaped you as you attempted to form a sentence, but failed to do so. the man in front of you only beamed at your reaction, his heart melting at how adorable and lovely you were. he was truly fortunate to have a loving, caring, understanding partner such as you.
he really loved you and cherished you with all of his soul.
"osamu! y-you're-" and before you could say anything else, the brunette gave you one last loving look before closing his eyes...
and placed his lips against yours.
your eyes bulged out from your sockets as a small shriek left your throat, but was immediately muted by your beloved's kiss. your flustered state couldn't comprehend what was happening, but the warmth of your chest was so overwhelming, you couldn't help but hastily press your lips back against his, tightly closing your eyelids to enjoy the moment more...
smirking, dazai stopped for a brief moment while you whined in protest, but he quickly soothed you while shifting his hands to grip your chair, gently twisting it around. you opened your eyes again to understand what he was doing... and regretted it as soon as you saw his smug look, while he caged you between him and your chair. you glanced around stunned, the dulcet shade of rosé overlapping your already flustered profile. shakingly, you looked up and met his calmer and haughty orbs again, making you gulp as your heart rammed in your chest.
his smooth, defined face was all you could see, and if it wasn't for your panicking mind, you were sure you could observe him for hours. you felt so open under his narrow, shadowy, russet orbs as if you were an interesting book he was very invested in. that fierce, intense way he observed you with, only made you shyer, and you shrank on your chair... which wasn't the best move, you thought, since he cornered you more than before, and all you could do was watch him from below, too red to do or say anything.
his low chuckle reverberated through the room, and a small drop of sweat rushed down your embarrassed face as he towered over you, devouring all of your sweet, lovable expressions. his smirk widened as your pupils shrank, bending down to your level once more. he tremendously wanted to pick you up and place you on the king-sized bed, while you desperately clung onto him and whispered his name, trying to evade his all-seeing gaze... but held himself back to tease you more.
after all, you looked so delicious right now...
"o-osamu..." your needy, wobbly voice brought him back from his little daydream, shaking off any other thoughts he had in mind... all that mattered now was you. humming, he got closer to you, both of your faces millimeters away. if he was trying to kill you, he was doing a great job at it. the smile never left his mouth, and you could feel the confidence seeping through him... his breath hit your lips as he exhaled making you freeze on the spot.
"hmmm? what is it, my dear? do you perhaps need something?" he asked, already knowing what you wanted and needed. but hearing you spell it out for him... it was a bliss.
you nervously exhaled, feeling the warmth in your cheeks rise as if you weren't blushing enough. not brave at all to face him head-on, you fiddled with the hem of your shirt, looking down as you did so. dazai screamed internally at the cuteness with all the courage you had, you shyly told him...
"p-please osamu, i-i need you..." and that was all he needed. chuckling, he stared at you with a wolfish grin, pleased to hear those words coming out of your lips.
"then... let me take care of you, amore mio~²"
your sketchbook was long forgotten that night, but dazai did make you "sing" some sweet songs for him...

first of all, my vacation is going well! i enjoyed going out and riding some rides, plus took a nice shower and now i am relaxing in my bed, hehe.
second, it's truly a bliss to see my own artwork improve over time! it makes me extremely happy. also, i love the idea of dazai eating a burger, that's adorable. i have been wanting to doodle dazai a lot lately; probably cause he's just so adorable to me and he's absolutely breathtaking, hehe. it's nice to fill up the empty pages and just letting your mind flow as you draw.
third... OH MY GOD. READING ALL THAT WHEN I WAS IN LINE FOR MY RIDE MADE ME SO FLUSTERED UNDERNEATH MY MASK. Firewatch Game Review
Let me begin by stating that Firewatch is unlike any game that I’ve ever played, which is saying something since I’ve been gaming since the Atari 2600.
So what is it about Firewatch that is so different from everything else that I’ve ever played? Is it the game play? Music? Graphics? The retro setting? While all of those elements are noteworthy in their own right, (as I’ll soon explain) I would say without a doubt that the game’s hook is the emotional ride that it takes you on during your 79 day stay in the Wyoming wilderness, and it’s climactic final act.

Firewatch starts players with a choice-based backstory that’s intertwined with the game’s tutorial, which nearly put me through the emotional wringer. This sets up your character’s (Henry) reasons for retreating into the solitude and isolation of the Wyoming wilderness. Regardless of the choices you make during the game’s backstory sequence, what inevitably results will leave players with a somber feeling at the game’s start which contrasts greatly against the games remarkably beautiful vistas and visuals. Firewatch takes place during the 80’s which plays a huge role in regards to the kind of technology that is available to you, the player. The game has a few 80’s nostalgia moments during your first day or so, but the time period of Firewatch is used more so to facilitate its story and gameplay mechanics.

The gameplay of Firewatch is based largely around exploration, communication and mild fetch quests which open up the greater narrative of the game. The most notable mechanic is the game’s walkie-talkie or two-way radio. Players will interact with another firewatch via the radio and it’s through these exchanges that a lot of the game’s story will unfold. Via radio you will learn more about the game’s setting, characters, the other firewatch, and yourself. Objectives are also given out via the two-way radio from your fellow firewatch and superior, and you’ll be able to report in everything you find along the way to your new friend.
Bioshock used a very similar mechanic, but Firewatch expands and improves upon the concept. Instead of the communication being one only way, communication is now two-way, with timed dialogue choices, (think Telltale Games TWD), and the player can even choose to say nothing when there are instances when what you don’t say is more important than what you might say.

During your exploration you’ll find supply caches containing items such as books, food, letters and other miscellaneous bits. Parts of the landscape will require you to set anchors in order to repel down steep cliffs and hillsides, and to climb back up. Later on in the game you’ll find a tool to clear away brush and to cut down trees in order to traverse more of the game’s areas.
The controls of the game are responsive and I found the pace of walking/running to be true to life. Though the game lacks a jump mechanic I never noticed its absence, or found myself wishing the game had one.

Campo Santo does an amazing job of making players feel as though they are hiking through the game’s wilderness and perfectly translating the feeling of isolation and solitude. I’ve scarcely felt so transported into a games environment. The land comes alive with the sounds of local wildlife and at times I’d almost swear i could feel the wind blowing against my face.
I can almost taste the fresh air…
Olly Moss is the man behind the artstyle and the look of the game, and it’s impressive. Somewhat reminiscent to that of Dishonored, the artstyle fits the game perfectly. The game features environments that are beautiful to say the least, and are largely benefitted by Mr Moss’ direction.

During my playthrough I found it nearly impossible to take a screenshot of this game that I didn’t want to use as my laptop’s wallpaper and hopefully one day (c’mon Sony) the background on my PS4. In fact, this game’s environments look so beautiful that it will probably be the cause of the inevitable collapse of the gaming industry when it inspires masses of gamers to actually go outside and take a walk through their local forest! Of course it would be at this point that EA would send a terminator back through time to snuff out the team at Campo Santo before the idea for the game ever sees the light of day. Oh, and did I mention the game’s color palate is bright and alive with rich tones? Because it is, and it makes the games visuals pop!
…and one more!
The game’s score reflects the isolation of the game’s character and swells in to accompany and summarize the game’s emotional highs and lows as they occur. Though repetitive at times, I always found the soundtrack to be appropriate.
Another point worth noting in the game’s audio section is definitely the voice acting, The game’s story is almost completely hinged on the talent of it’s voice actors and their deliveries, and they don’t disappoint. Your character is voiced by Rich Sommer of MadMen fame. Sommer’s impressive voice work is on display all throughout the game, and brings with it an air of believability to the game’s story and life to his character, Henry.
This is why you don’t use a lighter in an outhouse. A body was never found…
I really enjoyed my time with Firewatch. The game lasted me about 10hrs. which included traversing every trail I could find within the game’s map, as well as lining up the camera for that perfect screenshot over, and over again. The mystery, humor, exploration, visuals, and story kept me playing until the game’s conclusion which stuck with me for days after finishing it. Firewatch is one of those titles that I wanted to play through again immediately after its credits rolled, which is rare for me.
I liked the game’s underlying theme of devotion and relationships even if I found the game’s introduction and choices to be a bit limiting. Speaking as someone who has been married for 11yrs now, I think the story will be especially impactful and appeal those who are married or have been at one time.
The story of Firewatch feels so intimate, that at times I felt slightly uncomfortable, and mildly voyeuristic as if I was in the middle of someone’s very deep, very personal pain. Perhaps the narrative is part biographical if not by way of allegory? Perhaps not. Regardless, the emotional element of this game feels like a real slice of somebody’s personal life, which is a credit to Sean Vanaman.
My only gripe with Firewatch is the game’s nearly constant, almost juvenile use of profanity by your fellow Firewatch which really earns the game’s “M” for Mature rating. There are times when profanity can seem appropriate to highlight a moving event, but there are also more impactful ways to impart the gravity of a given situation through speech without resorting to carpet bombing via the ‘F’ word. The overuse of which just causes it to lose it’s power to invoke the urgency of an event, a lesson that would only strengthen Mr. Vanaman’s already impressive writing skills.

One minor nitpick I have with Firewatch is that with a game this beautiful looking, a photo mode or option to toggle the games reticule would’ve seemed obvious. Perhaps in a future patch that can become a reality? I hope so!
CONCLUSION
Campo Santo’s first offering is more than impressive. If Firewatch is any indication of what’s to come from the developer then I can’t wait to see what’s next!
In my humble opinion I think the experience found in Firewatch exceeds the value of its $19.99 asking price. With the game launching with a 10% savings for PS+ subscribers on top of that, it’s a hard proposition to pass up.

Developers that Inspire me
Yandere dev, also known as Alex is a game developer for an indie game called yandere simulator. He does not work for anyone, but is paid money via Patreon supporters and other crowd funding platforms to work on said game. His game has been stuck in development hell for many years, with development builds being released every so often, occasionally with interesting content He inspires me to do better because of how garbage a person he is. Yandere dev lives off of people funding him to make a game, yet he makes progress on the game at an incredibly slow rate. In addition, he has been known to spend money to hide any negative aspects of his personality, and has bought many hubs for talking about the game after said hubs began attracting people that talked badly about him. The sheer amount of bad things he gets away with inspires me, since I can see with him as a living example that a good concept for a game can get you incredibly far, even without much of a background or skill level.

Another developer that greatly inspires me is Maddy Thorson. They are a developer and the director for celeste, a platformer game that I enjoy watching a lot. They inspire me for two reasons, firstly for their ability to work with a team well, making celeste with a team of artists and programmers from around the globe, and secondly because of their ability to add controversial topics (for some reason having a trans character in a videogame is controversial) without affecting the quality of the story in any way, as well as making the character so compelling when the reveal came there was much less controversy than you would expect whenever something LGBT is introduced post production. The way they handled it, making subtle hints rather than flaunting it, writing it like somebody who was trans themselves would makes it all the more compelling.

Toby fox is a large inspiration for very different reasons. Despite his chronic pain issues, he has managed to produce amazing roleplaying games such as undertale and more recently, deltarune. These games have beautiful soundtracks, with their storytelling and music being the highlights of the game, yet having simple yet hard to master gameplay in the combat system, making it hard to die in ordinary gameplay (neutral and pacifist routes), yet difficult in the harder route (genocide or Jevil fight). This balance between gameplay, music and storytelling is one I can learn a lot from, since I often hone completely in on gameplay, leaving art by the wayside despite how important it is to a game.

- this is the hardest fight of deltarune, Jevil, The way the projectiles to dodge are so large, making it harder to dodge if you don’t start in the right area, yet also still perfectly dodgable is a trait that I enjoy a lot about the fight
Tama: creator of the friday night funkin mod “Soft”. This developer inspires me for their level of teamwork with the rest of their developers. Tama has 29 people working on their mod, which brings a whole new story and set of songs to the Friday Night Funkin formula. This mod adds a whole new story, which I absolutely adore along with new songs. While this mod doesn’t bring any new gameplay, aside from the typical patterns many other mods have done before, it makes up for it with story, as well as all the small details they add. All these small details inspire me a lot. teaching me that not everything in videogames has to be grand and noticed by everyone, even in smaller scale games. The fact that one person is directing 28 other people is also quite amazing, since all these people aren’t hired, and are simply working together on a passion project, which would make it much harder to organise people than if they were actually getting paid

Week 2 for soft mod, featuring Skid and pump, but not the ones found in the typical canon, these ones dress differently and weren’t tricked by lemon demon into rapping bf, rather just want to rap for fun. The pastel colour scheme for arrows in this mod is wonderful, fitting the buttons on soft BFs hat quite well, along with his hair.
The final source of inspiration I want to list has got to be Cameron Taylor, also known as Ninja muffin, the programmer for Friday Night Funkin (the non modded versions). He, along with his 3 fellow creators managed to create a rhythm game which grew so much beyond his and anybody elses expectations. The fact he manages to get so many wonderful creators and characters in the game, week to week from ser pelo to freakin tank man is incredible. His ability to create connections with people in the artistic community, yet stay thankful to the community is great proof to me that even if I somehow make it big, my personality isn’t going to suddenly become terrible

🡪 did someone saw that cutie in a red berret? yeah, that's you, sketching in one of the notebooks you brought.
🡪 oh, did someone also saw that dolly in a skirt with van gogh's starry night masterpiece? yep, defintely, that's you, admiring your juniors' art in their studio while giving them advice.
🡪 anways, moving on; your senpai, (s/n), is very good friends with kotaro bokuto, the colleyball captain of the fukorodani volleyball club. (s/n) comes to their friend's practice by themselves but one day, you're intrigued with the way they were acting.
🡪 it was as if they were jittery and were kept on their toes. did something happen without your knowledge?
(s/n): they almost had it... they almost had it!
(y/n): ... senpai?
(s/n): if keiji didn't mess it up, he could have-
(y/n): sennpai, are. you. okay???
🡪 your kind concern reconvened your senpai's attention toyou, who almost looked petrified. (s/n) apologized for their erratic behavior and explained the situation.
🡪 long story short: fukorodani would facing off against the schools in tokyo in less than one week, and they don't have enough time to practice the new combo they conjured up.
🡪 you, being the supportive type, decided to come with your senpai. they were more than happy to have you tagging along. besides, it seemed like you needed something to be your next inspiration.
🡪 wow. the tension in the court... is just... wow.
🡪 boy, did the sound of balls bouncing off the floor and walls made you rethink your decision. what if you're going to lose an arm? what if you're going to get a concussion? is the place even safe for behaving people?
(s/n): relax. they know where they're gonna hit.
🡪 you're almost believing your senpai when a ball narrowly missed your head by a hair. a hair... a. hair.
🡪 poor you... you almost dropped your art things on the floor and fainted right after that.
keiji: not that high, bokuto-san. you almostt hurt (s/n)-san.
(s/n): actually... you almost obliterated my vice president, (y/f/n).
🡪 you were, by all means of surprise, a forgiving type of person, so you kindly and simply brushed it off with a shy wave of dismissal and a smile.
(y/n): no, it's fine! in fact, it kinda impressed me that it can go that fast and strong. er, good job!
🡪 let's just say, the volleyball captain became very fond of you at the very instant.
🡪 and his vice captain? he's intrigued, to say the least.
🡪 after one strenous match (that scared you most of the time and had to shift multiple times), they finally had a break. your senpai walked over to kotaro and chatted with him, shooting the breeze as the other players attended to their needs.
🡪 while the game was nearing to an end earlier, you finally moved to the most comfortable spot: almost to the corner,  underneath a window. you set your artist's satchel beside you in peace (at last) and made new sketches that were inspired by your new surroundings: the court ceilings, the net from your perspective, the rapid movement of rubber shoes, the accelerated ball and it's awesome momentum.
🡪 you were having your own fun in your own newfound place, and you like the fact you had something new to draw about.
🡪 now, during the ten-minute break, keiji akaashi, the vice captain, noticed that you were gone... well, that was until he saw you sitting by yourself.
🡪 you were sitting cross-legged; your sketchpad on your lap; your mechanical pencil scraping the paper as it draws; your head bending down with your eyes focused on the task at hand.
🡪 keiji walked over to you quietly, making sure his tall presence won't startle you. but since you were so immersed, you didn't even pay any attention to anything else. so, he stood before you, bent over, and looked down at your sketchpad.
keiji: it's really pretty.
🡪 you almost threw your pencil five feet in the air from the sudden, accidental scare.
(y/n): oh, um... thanks... but does it really?
keiji: yeah.
🡪 from then on, you and keiji hang out like good buddies every other time after his practice and after your duties in the art club were done for the day.
🡪 however, on one hand, it would be you who would come by the court and proceed with your habit to sketch the surroundings. but, on the other hand, it would keiji who would finish early and drop by the art club (without announcing his presence because of his frequent visits), watching you work behind your back as you work on an easel or laptop (for digital arts).
🡪 of course, during the times you two would spend the time, keiji would give you meaningful advice on how to make your pieces more attractive and more aesthetic-looking.
🡪 surprisingly, they worked so well! in fact, so well that your (s/n) would tease you about keiji being the better mentor than themselves.
(s/n): i guess (y/n)-chan doesn't need me at all... she had found a better teacher... much worse, he's in the volleyball club. oh, the horror!
(y/n): but you taught me the fundamentals, though... senpai, you're being melodramatic again.
🡪 in case you haven't noticed it yet, you're the type of artist who can quickly adapt to another artstyle without sacrificing your own. you are a fast learner type and that was because you believe improvement knows no speed.
🡪 you always work hard to make your pieces expressive, eloquent, and emotional. with your ardent passion to adapt to functional styles, it's no wonder why you can cope up with keiji's suggestions without thinking about it.
🡪 keiji, in turn, would be surprised. but he would only retain that notion only to himself. he couldn't bear to admit that verbally.
🡪 he's not big on evoking emotions or feelings easily; he prefers to keep a calm, relaxing, and unmoving personality everytime he's around crowds.  
🡪 but there was one thing he couldn't do: he couldn't stop his own eyes from expressing from what he truly felt in the inside.
🡪 whenever he saw you drawing something that seemed better than he liked it to be, keiji would give you a nod of his head and simply motioned for you to continue with a wave of his hand. but then you would give him a quick-second glance, and his eyes said, 'it's really amazing. please do more'.
🡪 other times, when you eagerly show him your work, a side of his lips would tug slightly upwards. but it would quickly disappear as it appeared. you didn't fail to spot it, though, and you felt super proud you're able to make keiji elicit an expression of happiness.
🡪 so, one day... your art teacher dropped the bomb: you, art students of the art club, have to draw still-life.
🡪 but not just any still life. no, it had to be still life with the theme, "classically contemporary".

🡪 anyways, anyways, anyways. here's the breakdown of how the hell akaashi keiji ended up wearing a yukata with the matching sword.
🡪 he admitted to kotaro that you asked him to be your model. kotaro nearly gave him the most memorable slap ever because he lowkey rejected you. as his punishment, kotaro got in contact with one of the drama peeps he's friends with and ordered to his friend the most amazing yukata they have in the closet with matching sword. (so it was definitely his idea; no wonder why akaashi looked slightly pissed). while akaashi thought it was a waste of time and called kotaro out for being impulsive, he also thought... what's the freaking big deal?
🡪 what is he overthinking about? there's nothing to put his mind heavily on the matter. the only thing he's going to do is sit still and look handsome for the artist. is that the hardest job in the world?
🡪 his answer came to him when he sat down on a stool and posed for (y/n): it's not the hardest job at all. besides, he's not always on energizer bunnies and he's barely hyper when he's sitting down. so... i think he's doing a great job~
🡪 (y/n), in turn, is having the best fun of her life.
🡪 she's sketching one of her bosom friend for one her important projects.
🡪 she's taking her sweet, sweet, sweet time sketching keiji on the digital easel and before they both knew it, the draft was done!
🡪 it only took them seven hours, though.
🡪 keiji missed his volleyball practice and it was past their curfews.
🡪 but neither of them mind. while some students really did stay put (wow, the dedication), keiji and (y/n) decided to go home at once.
🡪 but only after keiji changed into his uniform again.

🡪 his dignity relies on his appearance somehow.
🡪 once he's done, both of them walked home since their houses were just walking distances.

keiji: ... fine. let me have it, please.
🡪 after a hearty lunch, keiji walked you to the art club. (of course, there was no competition but the grades matter-)
sensei: all of your artworks deserve to be in a museum. but, to be honest, out of the rest, i think (y/n)'s piece deserved a seat right next to da vinci's.
🡪 god bless keiji for being there or else you could have lost all senses then gained a concussion from fainting.
🡪 your still life, turned out, to be the one that stood out the most.
sensei: how did you pull this off, (y/n)? who... who taught you?
🡪 you squinted at your work and noticed the changes you never paid attention to at all. while you retained your own original art style of 'still life', there were some compositions that seemed brand new.
(y/n): keiji-kun taught me.
🡪 you said it with so much pride that keiji actually smiled.

🡪 he smiled the most genuine smile he could ever muster.

Some webcomic recs
Webcomics are as underrated as they are varied. I mostly read printed comics now, but there’s no way I’d have gotten there had I not found webcomics before - believe me, I tried, but this damn hobby is super inaccessible to a beginner, not to mention expensive. Webcomics are like fanfics in that regard - hell, some of them are fan comics - in that there’s something for everyone, all within your reach, but in order to find something you like you have to either 1. Get very, VERY lucky, 2. Be prepared to read a lot of bad stuff in order to get to the good stuff, or 3. Hear about them from people you trust. 
I was a 2 - i would read anything, back in the day - and while i’m not as unconditionally enthusiastic as i was, there are still some gems I wish got the same appreciation as some talents in the industry. I’ll spare you the rest of the article (dm me for comic rants though), let’s get to it!

I’m probably not the one introducing you to Check Please, as it’s one of the most popular webcomics out there, thank god. The parts of the fandom i’m familiar with are cool and wholesome, just like the work itself. It’s about a southern gay kid, Eric Bittle, who joins the hockey team in his college. It’s impossible not to love every single character there, the sports drama elements are great, and the format is like solidarity put into panels. The Samwell Men’s Hockey team’s motto is “we’ve got each other’s backs”, and there isn’t a single part of the comic that doesn’t 100% incorporate that.

The 2000s so far have been a rough contest for the title of “sweetest ya romance” but guys, we found it, we can stop now. Nick and Charlie are in highschool, Charlie is gay and out (not by will), Nick plays rugby because apparently that’s what british jocks do. Can i make it any more obvious? It took me a while to fall in love with the artstyle but when i did i fell HARD - the creator is re-drawing some of the older chapters, though, so your experience might be different. The story’s captivating right away, and you want everyone there to be happy from pretty much page 1. The creator also writes ya prose, and some of her books are about other characters from the same school. I love all of them, but Radio Silence is my personal favorite. She also has two novellas about Nick and Charlie themselves, available as e-books.

I rarely start new webcomics anymore, but boy, this one got me FAST. and that was even before I realized it’s a polyam love story, which i love but is surprisingly rare in webcomics - at least the ones i know. Julien, an irresponsible young musician, resorts to sharing an apartment with two roomates who are a couple. I fell for the unique, gorgeous artstyle first, and by the time i realized i’m also super invested in the story and characters, it’s already become one of my favorites. Plus, Julien’s hair looks so soft! 
The Property of Hate

THIS is what comics should be. There’s so much passion here, not just for the story but for the storytelling as well - and the two aren’t as separated as you might think. A young girl is recruited by a TV man to be a hero. The world they enter seems nonsensical and arbitrary at first, but as they travel she discovers its logic, stories and secrets. She will also, as her title suggests, need to save it. There’s so much i love about this comic that i don’t know where to start, so i’ll just say this: it’s absolutely inspiring, in every sense of the word. Also, read the creator’s duck comics, they’ll make you feel things. 
Webcomics i occasionally remember to catch up on, get blown away all over again by how good they are, vow to check them regularly for updates then forget. And repeat 
Wilde Life

I think this is the first ever webcomic i read that had a plot? I got on the wagon at around chapter 1 or 2 and it’s hard to believe it but it only gets better with time, even though it already starts at 100%. Oscar moves to a new town and immediately makes friends with a ghost and a grumpy teen werewolf. It has both monster-of-the-week type problems and overarching plots, and reading it feels nostalgic and brand new at the same time. The fantasy world has this special feel to it, that makes me miss growing up in the american wilderness even though i, well, didn’t. Plus, the creator is cool as hell. I knit her a hat in high school in exchange for a commission.

This comic got me through a hard time and i’ll forever be grateful for that. Also, it’s really, really good. This is another case of a comic where you fall in love with the art right away and before long you find yourself caring very much about the characters and the story. You might also find yourself growing out your hair to style it like Luca’s. If you’re me it’ll be a lost cause, so, uh, keep that in mind. Luca works as a technician at the prestigious Uitspan university. A mysterious, powerful man is looking to change that. While the comic’s biggest strength is probably the gorgeous, fascinating worldbuilding - and Luca’s hair - the characters are also ridiculously easy to relate to, even if we don’t know anything about them. Even the most meaningless extras are somehow compelling thanks to the dynamic, rich art style. And did i mention the hair? If you like it, you won’t be disappointed by everything else Little Foolery makes. 
How To Be a Werewolf

I almost didn’t read this one! My brain has decided i don’t like werewolves and i don’t know how to reverse that. But then i saw Elias’ body language and it was extremely fun and friendly, and so was the rest of the comic, and the rest is history. Malaya knows she’s a werewolf, but seeing as she doesn’t know any other werewolves, dealing with that is hard. That is until Elias discovers her and decides to help, along with the rest of his pack. It’s filled with family and solidarity feelings, some dark mysteries and themes, and the art is beautiful and expressive.

Another case of read-everything-this-creator-makes-it’s-all-amazing! Wallace, a social worker, moves - or rather, is moved - to District C, which is mostly populated by monsters. His heart’s in the right place, and apparently so is his apartment, because his neighbors are cool as heck and agree, some of them reluctantly, to help him get his bearings. There’s a mystery to uncover, some monsters to help and a dashing tea octopus to woo - for Kip to woo, anyway - and it’s all a delight to read. Every single character brings their own lovable-ness to the table, and even with the darker parts, reading this comic kinda feels like being hugged.

Guys. guys! I’m pretty sure this is my all time favorite comic, web OR printed. I have the printed version, i still read it online occasionally, a lot of the songs mentioned in it are now saved on my spotify, i had it as my phone background for a good couple of years, the whole package. Amal comes out to his family and it ends with him having to drive to his sister’s graduation in Providence. There’s a guy in his kitchen who just so happens to need a lift there, and he’s willing to pay, and Amal’s too hungover to argue. What follows is the best roadtrip story ever. I’m seriously considering getting my license just to recreate that route. I just really love this story, okay? Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, the creator’s music taste is GOOD.

The fantasy aesthetic to end all fantasy aesthetics. And the characters are good and interesting. And the world is well built and leaves you wanting more. AND there’s a cat. And it looks so good! Leona is irresponsible and spontaneous and gets her friends in some weird shit that leaves them trapped in a strange world, dealing with several curses, trying to survive and make sense of it all. I could spend a lifetime looking at the art and die happy.

A girl’s basketball team and its coach, Jeff, deal with a zombie apocalypse. They make the most of the post apocalyptic world. There’s drama, friendship, found family, love and hope - it’s basically everything a zombie apocalypse narrative should be. And i love how the creator plays with the colors from chapter to chapter! 
Rock and Riot - finished

It’s cute! It’s fun! It’s a 1950’s queer ensamble cast high school drama! It’s what Grease would’ve been like in a better timeline, except we still got it in this timeline. The artstyle fits perfectly with the story and characters, but if you want to see what’s the creator capable of now, read their newest comic, Project Nought. It’s a cool sci fi story and just like in Rock and Riot, it’s super easy to connect to every character there. 
Alright there’s a lot more but i somehow wrote 4 google docs pages of webcomic recs in one sitting (this is what i’m able to focus on? Really, brain?) and i think that’s enough for now. The archive for the Creator Babble chat that occurred from February 1st, 2020 to February 7th, 2020.  The chat focused on the following question:
What is the nicest thing someone has said about your story, whether its published or still a WIP?

Well, this is one I can answer right away. It's not a very straightforward answer, but I had someone reference me and my comic in an essay about reasons why they were able to love themself... It was for a creative writing class, and they just used me as an example of a greater thing (indie media)... and I only know about it because they asked me permission. but they let me read the essay, and it made me cry. I havent heard from them in a while and I really hope they're okay, but that really stuck with me in a way nothing else has. It's not really a quote, though, so the nicest comment I have recieved was "I can tell how much you love people by reading this story." It was really sweet in a way I can't quite articulate. People have been incredibly sweet to me, and I feel very blessed. I could make a long list detailing the kindness I have been shown.

Having people find it and say "THIS IS EXACTLY THE KIND OF STORY I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR" also hits a nerve. I know that feeling. You like certain themes/motifs and you wish someone would blend them together in just the right way. It can be magical.
And the last one is when I learned that children like it. A few have come forward so far - either in person or through their parents - and told me they loved it. It was around that age that I was building my own 'inner library' of inspirations for the comic. To know that I might be part of theirs, even in a small way, is just... the best?

I also had a student of mine (I am a teacher at a church) come out to me because he knew I would be okay with who he is. And, I have had people tell me it's inspiring to them, which kinda makes my heart melt. I'll stop now but, really I could go on and on about how open and loving people have been with me and my work, and how much it means to me.

Man... This is somewhat difficult for me to answer since I am so early into my comic creating journey. However, I will say that I recently got a comment on my comic Whispers of the Past (https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/whispers-of-the-past/list?title_no=191366) that made me smile. A long time reader commented that they always read my new pages twice, once on Webtoon, and again on Tapas. This really made me realize that my work has meaning to somebody other than myself, which is definitely what I need to hear when I'm doubting myself.

It's so nice reading about nice comments people have gotten and honestly... y'all deserve it!! I need to be in a better habit of commenting myself because I will promote comics to my friends for days on end but I'm too shy to leave a comment, even though I love receiving comments myself. I think the nicest comments I've received have been in combination with the conventions I was at last year. People told me that they thought the comic was funny, which I am incredibly thankful for. And one person who bought the book at the convention took the time to find it on Tapas and then comment on the latest page, saying that they'd talked to me, read the book, and that they liked it. That meant so much to me it was crazy! And another time, I was showing my book to someone at a convention and she said that she actually read the comic online, which honestly... It's so strange and surreal to me to meet anyone in real life who reads things posted online. It made my heart do smiley emoji. I think what LadyLazuli said is really right, this idea that you're a small part of someone's life or inspirations or just general day is pretty amazing?! Also this one guy commented on every page week to week with the same 'vase' joke on several updates and honestly the commitment was truly astounding

I think some of the nicest comments come from one specific reader, who has mentioned a couple times that going back and reading the comic has helped them through some tough times. There was also one person who went to the effort of contacting me after their books were damaged from flooding, and wanted to buy new books to replace the old ones. This was wild since they wanted to do something so inconvenient (paying with cash by mail, and I didn't even have an online storefront in the first place) to replace the books.

really early on i had 1 reader that would leave in-depth analysis of some character interactions and they were were spot on and made me really feel like people cared about this story . The other interaction that really stands out was doing the convention circuit last year I had a reader come up to say hi, and usually that interaction is just "i love your comic!" (which is amazing) but he also then talked to me at length about the story and again it was this feeling of just knowing someone out there cares about what you're doing. Comics feels particularly isolating so interactions like that really keep me going.

I've had two different readers tell me our comic has brought them joy during bad days. Sadly one of them I haven't heard from in 2 years and they were going through some rough times. I hope they're okay

The nicest thing I've heard was when my coworker told me him and his daughter were reading it, and he told me that she's "drawing like me" with panels and stuff and keeps asking him "how do i make the bubbles" So they're gonna work on that and then he's gonna show it to me.

Any time someone gets what I'm trying to do with the story. I have a great fear of getting good intentioned people trashing the most important parts of my story (without realizing their importance). So whenever someone gets what the story is all about, whether as a whole or just one scene, it's a huge weight off my chest. Legit brings tears to my eyes. Even if I manage to overcome that fear some day, comments like that would mean a lot to me. Being understood has always been very important to me.

Ffff all my readers have been so compassionate, it's jarring! In a nice way! Choosing one nice thing is hard, every comment has been nice. I guess the most flattering is when a someone takes the time to go back to the previous chapters to link little things up with the current events in the story, or when they manage to remember in spite of how webcomics update so slowly. There was a comment I saved a while back where someone remembered a small thing in chapter 3 and was doing some brainstorming with it relating to the current chapter at the time.
Every so often someone also leaves a paragraph with some of the most motivational gushing, it's so nice! Oh! Also, there have been a few people who've asked me to print my comic so they can have a physical copy (which I'm slowly starting to do), which is super motivating knowing a couple people like my depressing comic enough to want to own a copy of it.

Oh this is hard I remember one comment on tapas that they got their aunt and cousin reading it and I was flattered! Most comments I got were about the artstyle and progression of the story, which I hope to continue if school lets me. Art is admittedly easier to comment on. If I'm commenting on art on anyone's comic, I try to point out how it contributes to the storytelling, rather than "ooh pretty and shiny." Pretty and shiny is valid but I'd be just doing illustrations if that were my main goal!

I've been really excited to answer this question because it gives me an opportunity to thank any and all the fans and people who celebrate our work. I've been so humbled by all of the wonderful and amazing fanart we've received, music paired with scenes from our comic, and fans even imagining scenarios of the characters themselves-- I'm constantly blown away! I do have my most treasured moment however, and that was when we were tabling at TCAF a couple years back. We had been swamped with crowds, selling, and early mornings-- it was a long day! That was until we had one person who went through the trouble to see us in person, and handcraft a drawing to deliver to us, saying thank you, and in that moment I bawled!! They quickly left after us thanking them so much, and I'll never forget that and how much it gave us a fire to see this whole project through. We have it framed and it sits in front of our cpu

@keii4ii The only nice thing about Webtoons is that there aren't any profiles to check, so you can't look up fans via their comments. Also if you did Google their username there isn't a guarantee whoever you find would be that Webtoons user without them telling you. Lmao! About the thirsty comments, I used to get them a lot of Webtoons. There was this one scene where my smaller MC pulled the taller one to their face to say "Your friend is dead", before shoving him away and walking off. Some of my readers went wild! They wanted the two MCs to make-out so bad, even though the scene clearly had no romantic chemistry... or even the entire comic for that matter. My thirsty bunch came off really desperate and reaching at times.

I really have never gotten thirsty comments, with the exception of one or two very mild 'Oh, that character is attractive' comments. But I think my comics just don't really attract thirsty readers. Of course, I rarely get any reader feedback, so that's probably part of it.

Pfff I'm in a similar boat to Deo's. Usually I don't mind, but there are moments where it sucks. Like there will be a really serious, or heavy scene and someone will pop up with "Make them kiss!!", "Don't be mean to your future hubby, X! Kiss him and make up!!". It totally feels they don't actually care about the story and just want something to jack it off to. xD I don't get a whole lot of thirst anymore, which is nice. I think the vocal group lost interest after being blue-balled for 3-4 chapters. Weirdest thing, I have yet to get anyone saying my characters are attractive... well, some readers used to say Julian (my questionable looking non-binary character) was pretty but they weren't really thirsty, just observations. At least they came off like that. My style makes characters look kind of ugly, so comments about any of my cast being attractive is non-existent. @keii4ii Ooh yeah, I can see how that would be an issue. Although, if you really want to show off some super nice comments, you can also just cover or blur out their username and icon image. A lot of people do that, it's really good for keeping up the user's anonymity, and I don't think they would mind since you're not using their words slanderously.

So far the only 'thirst comments' I've gotten are when the comic gets even the slightest bit... gay I can't say my story revolves around major LGBTQ+ themes, but people have picked up on random bits of subtext between characters (which is mostly intentional on my part, not gonna lie) and specifically take time to comment on them. It makes me happy to see people reading between the lines. And it also helps me know what the readers like or are really looking for. So... yeah, I'm gonna keep on that path

@sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD) hm if i were to give negative feedback about your comic I'd say the biggest things are that you have a lot of characters that in my mind are kind of hard to differentiate, and also it can be really hard to tell where your characters are in space. But those don't matter too much, as they both will probably get better with time. Your biggest strength imo in your dialogue anyways

Not every negative feedback is relevant to my goals, is key for me. It's the whole "you can't please everyone" principle. My target audience does not include every person out there. If my target audience falls in love with what I make, then that's success for me. I don't need to impress the rest of the world.

Yeah I've found it really hard to juggle the consistency with where characters are standing all the time. I write out lists of the order they're spatially located in an effort to keep track of them. Hopefully I'll get better with practice

It's not always a failure of storytelling skills, though. Some people's brains work along a certain line, and when a story is told that doesn't gel with that, it seems confusing to the person. Your comic is public, and it's going to be seen by a very wide variety of people with all different kinds of reading comprehension and tastes. You're never going to appeal to all of hem, and plenty won't understand what you're trying to do. But that doesn't mean what you're making is bad. It just means it, like every story, is for a particular audience.
Yeah, if it's a repeated crit, it is something to keep in mind, but just remember that incorporating a crit shouldn't change what you're trying to do, only refine it.

Of course. And I don't think my comic is bad. But one example was when I realized some confusion stemmed from me having a speech bubble that read, "without her," and didn't realize "her" could refer to two different characters which would make what was being said have two very different meanings. It's easy to overestimate how understandable your story is as an author that already knows everything that's going on. I think confusion is a good thing to pay attention to- I've definitely read comics before and dropped them because the author didn't pay enough attention to introducing things to the audience

At that point I'd honestly keep going with what you have - there are several stories I've gone into with confusion, but also greatly enjoyed them, or even got less confused over time. Some readers need time to put the pieces together. So long as someone enjoys it on some level, I think that makes the comic successful. Maybe not completely - but not every comic will be everything to all people.

I remember the first time I read Unsounded, I had absolutely no idea what was going on because of how Ashley structures her world-building. But there were aspects of it that were very engaging, so I stuck with it. After finishing the archives, I went back and reread. Now that I understood what all the terms meant, it made perfect sense on the second go-round. It's now one of my favourite webcomics. Some stories are just told differently, and that's okay.(edited)

Most transphobic people quietly leave, only the really sad, pitiful ones make a stink and their opinions are pretty laughable. If you get crap laugh in their faces like they're morons. I would also say my character Julian is intersex, but I'm not sure how much it counts since it was a recent decision I made (after doing a lot of research) due to readers headcanoning them as an intersex character.

I don't see a problem with reconsidering a character's sex, gender, or orientation as we become more aware of issues in the world, or even just more aware of our own characters. Re: clarity and confusion, sometimes a small change in wording or such can improve the clarity greatly, and that's great! But I agree that reader confusion doesn't necessarily = failure in storytelling. I've published my comic first in Korean, and a much improved version in English. The cultural difference in the audience has shown to be a huge factor in terms of what's clear and what isn't, or how certain things come across. And that's just one factor.

My readers made me put a lot of thought into it, and after the research being intersex actually fits a lot better with Julian's type of gender dysphoria and confusion than when they were AAB male. Like, making my work as accessible as possible has never been a goal for me with this story. So to me, it's not a failure that a large number of people can't see parts of the story that aren't being spelled out. I can totally respect "I want my work to be more accessible, so if all these people are not Getting It, then I need to do a better job" as a valid stance. Just not one I'm taking. It's all about individual goals and priorities.

@sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD) It is difficult to understand if you're not intersex yourself, even though I studied a lot before making the decision about my character I still don't know if I'll represent the topic properly. The best you can really do is get into researching all the medical stuff, talk to people willing to share their experiences with being intersex, and watch videos of people talking about it from a professional and personal perspective. The hardest thing to get right about something so subjective and personal is that everyone's experiences are different, so no matter how much you research you just gotta do your best with the info you have, then figure out how your character would experience it personally.(edited)

The subject matters are uncommon and the main characters are awful and unreliable, but that's my aesthetic so I'm sticking to it. For me, I’m not even sure what niche Ashes belongs to. (https://www.flowerlarkstudios.com/cos/) It’s dark, it’s weird, it has a twisty plot that slowly trickles information, and it’s an odd mash-up of genres. I often try to describe it as Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children meets Farthing Wood. It’s mostly urban fantasy with some horror elements and talking animals. Basically it’s about a bunch of unaging teenagers with supernatural, angel-gifted powers and a bunch of woodland critters fighting (although so far it’s more running from) eldritch monsters. But it’s main focus is on each character battling either mental illness or some other kind of inner demon.

There's also the aspect of: what's niche in one culture may not be niche in another. In Korean media, Fantastical Old Korea is a very common setting for all sorts of genres: gag a day, romance, all-ages adventure, gritty crime drama, zombie apocalypse, you name it. If the work spends a lot of visuals showing mundane everyday moments, often that's a shorthand for "sit down and stay a while; this is a heartfelt tale that takes its time." My comic uses such a setting. When I began to publish it in English, I was surprised that people were expecting it to be one of these AND NOTHING ELSE: a) exciting magical action adventure b) mythology-driven, all about gods and spirits My comic is neither of those. It definitely contains elements of adventure, but that's the plate the meat is served on, not the meat itself. So I guess the usage of the setting is niche.
Like, imagine a civilian life drama set in WWII time. The civilian MC may have a family member or a close friend in the military, but the story focuses on the MC's experience. Imagine presenting that story and people expect it to be... military action? Not a perfect analogy, but hopefully a good enough one.

To answer @eli [a winged tale] question. I'm delving into stuff like mental illnesses and disorders, medical illnesses, abuse, trauma and later on, self-care. The comic itself is slow and character centric, I guess you can say it's like a character study. The story can be really depressing depending on who is reading, and it has some softcore horror bits sprinkled in. I'm kind of a nerd for mental health, sad stuff and everything medical so I figured I may as well make a story embellishing those interests. In short it's a sad, character driven, psychological drama about two extremely flawed individuals. Not particularly exciting compared to all the other webcomics out there, but somebody has to make that one pretentious, psychological slice of life piece.

The thing with .hack//SIGN was it had a lot of promises of mystery that never went anywhere, within SIGN. I've heard those mysteries do go somewhere within the franchise, but you had to watch/read the entire franchise, which I wasn't going to do. About Smile for Me
Hi, this is another super long post where i talk about my newest obsession, the game "Smile for Me". This is going to be long and personal, maybe cringy, and full of spoilers. So if you don't like any of these things, better not read.
But before i start i wanna thank Gabe ( @gabeoflane ) and Yugo ( @yugsly ) for creating this game. You have created something wonderful.
First things first: SFM is a great game. The aesthetic, artstyle, music, characters, story, gameplay - on point. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good game! It's absolutely worth playing!
I started playing the game around a week ago and got obsessed in a heart beat. Those who know me should know that i get obsessed with stuff very easily, so no surprise here. And it also shouldn't come as a surprise that i got a crush on our dear boris either.
Usually tho, i get fascinated with things. My feeling towards SFM are different tho. It's not a fascination, it's a connection.
On my first play through, i couldn't really get into things, but after replaying it, i took my time to re-read things and it hit home.
The theme "happiness" itself is a painful thing to me. Cause i haven't been happy in a long time.
I've been finally officially diagnosed with depression, wich has been with me for years.
Ever since i can think i've been stressed and under constant pressure. I wasn't good in school, i got bullied. My parents obviously wanted me to be successful in life and do good in school and all that jazz. Understandable. And please don't think bad of my parents, they are very supportive and good people. But back then things were a little different.
You see, reading and seeing the pictures of Boris' past dug up memories.
I often wasn't allowed to get up from the table until i finished my homework - same thing with food.
Sitting in the dark at the table, staring at blank papers and unfinished food was almost a daily thing for me. I got scared of failing.
Still i feel like a waste of space cause i'm not able to live on my own. I am not successful. i don't make enough money to even pay my rent. I am scared of asking for help. I don't want to be that failure in the family.
But on the other side i developed a facade. Acting tough and confident when really i just want to hide and cry, or not even exist. I am just now learning to talk about emotions and stop faking being happy all the time till i break.
To be honest, i can't remember the last time i was actually happy.
I guess this is where my brain kinda drew a connection with Doctor Habit.
And that connection is why i love this game so much.
Because, i joke around saying "happiness is stored in Boris Habit" because it is. Because of this emotional connection i got right now, i can feel something.
Boris is a fictional character and since i'm an artist i can draw him being happy. And somehow this sparks joy. Seeing him happy makes me happy, at least for a little moment. It makes me smile.
And again, the game in it's entirety - gives me hope.
I love making others happy, thinking it will make me happy. And i saw how it can end if you only care for others and not yourself.
You can get left behind. You gotta slow down.
In the game you get the chance to make everyone happy and potentially have a lot of friends.
But obviously, the most important one is Habit.
You have the chance to make him happy by being his friend. Or you can straight up kill the man.
And it made me think.
I'm young. and i feel hopeless. I feel like dying. But maybe, just maybe, i will find my "flower delivery youth" that will bring happiness to me?
I have friends. I am thankful for them, but as much as i love and appreciate them, they can't help me. They can't bring me long lasting happiness. And i understand that nobody is always happy.
But at least, a basic level would be nice.
And Smile for me really gives me hope, that even if it takes a few more years, i will find that flower that makes me feel happy again. Maybe it's a person, an event, or anything else.
I will keep waiting and try to better myself to not hurt anyone anymore.
And another good thing that came from the game, is that it inspired me to work on projects again and Yeah! A friend and i are now working on something i'm really excited for!
and before i forget. the fandom so far seems amazing! And as a trans dude myself i really appreciate the positivity towards the trans habit headcanon. didn’t know i needed that but i did!
So in conclusion: Smile for Me is a great game that made me aware of problems i have to learn to deal with, and it gave me some hope for a better future! All the love and support to the makers of the game! Thank you so much!

I think Mob Psycho 100 is my favorite anime ever.
Which is a weird thing to title a post, I’ll give you that. Even my current favorites, Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist have parts of them I don’t like and I consider them 9 or 9.5′s out of 10.
I ‘think’ it’s my favorite because it’s (As time of this writing) still ongoing but it’s safe to say the last episode of season 2 isn’t going to be suddenly terrible. That, and I haven’t had months and years to stew on it before I claim it’s actually my favorite.

I tend to like things that subvert the norm, especially in the Anime business where it’s sort of expected to follow a formula and not deviate from it too much. If it worked for Akira Toriyama, it should work for us, right? The greats make a story, then everyone uses that as a skeleton to build their own very-similar story on top of it. It’s why trends and tropes are so much more noticeable in anime. Defeat-into-friendship, the tournament arc, the beach episode, power creep escalation. Sometimes, an anime will even outright take a visual theme and reuse it to trick your brain. Try to watch the Dragon Ball OP and then Yu Yu Hakusho and see how similar they are. Sometimes it’s a shot for shot copy with the YYS characters.

So, Shonen is a massively incestuous genre and it has been for 30 years or more. That’s not to say that it’s necessarily a bad thing because some shows want to ‘do it better’.
Now, ONE is a writer who sort of specializes in parody or at least subverting your expectations. You already know just by the name of the series that Saitama is going to show up and win the fight in one punch, the surprise is how hard the other characters fought before he got there, and then how instead of everyone worshipping him as a hero they harass him. So: Let’s take the shonen hero archetype. He’s physically competent, he never gives up, he has friends but never has to rely on anyone but himself, he soon surpasses his teachers if he has any, never gives up, and is righteous in his beliefs. It’s likely he has an array of ‘cool’ moves with names he can shout out, you can make action figures out of him, he’s instantly recognizable by his hair or clothing. He’s good because he’s strong and he’s strong because he’s good. I say ‘he’ because I’ve literally never seen a Shonen that didn’t have a male protagonist.

Now along comes Mob. He’s generic looking with his dopey bowl-cut hairdo and plain black school uniform. He’s by far the most powerful psychic individually you’ll meet for the majority of the show, but he’s also a pacifist, he hates fighting and refuses to hurt other people with his powers no matter how bad and wrong they seem to be. He doesn’t really have cool lines or marketable super-moves. But most importantly of all, he is not self-reliant and tough and determined. In fact, he’s an emotional, sensitive kid that has trouble expressing himself and taking social cues from others, which makes him awkward and shy!
Ironically, of course, this sensitivity and empathy is what makes his psychic power so great, since powers come from strong emotions and he’s basically always trying not to cry. But instead of just making him able to shoot laser beams that are more powerful, his growth is that he learns how to relate with other people and make friends. When ‘defeating’ human opponents, he is deflecting their beams and telekinesis while trying to talk to them, and understand them. He’s a combat therapist. All he wants to do is either make them understand why they’re being selfish, or hurt, or afraid, and help them. This, of course, means nobody really dies and they have a REALLY good chance of turning their villainous lives around or at least becoming one of Mob’s friends.
Mob’s sensitivity and empathy but trying to keep his emotions in check is depicted by a ‘progress to explosion’ counter as he takes little hits of emotional damage and stress throughout a day, so more than any other character you know exactly how Mob feels about something despite his gormless, blank expression. When he reaches 100% he ‘explodes’ which is more or less he has a tantrum and cries and his power goes out of control. Not only is this actually awesome visually because there’s a lot of crazy effects and devastation, but your heart kind of goes out to the kid. This really only happens when something really devastating has happened and the uncontrolled power smashes the enemy of the week.
Mob’s not popular or competent at a lot of things, and would rather become ‘less weird’ than focus on honing psychic ability, which leads him to joining the Body Improvement Club, and working at Spirits & Such with Reigen. Even though he could easily coast through life with his gifts of psychic ability, he’d rather work on the things that he’s not the best at already to become a more well-rounded person. Though he’s easily so much more powerful than the body improvement club or Reigen he still looks up to them. He asks his friends for help and they support him as peers. He’s not a super-mature kid that can just do anything, he still relies on responsible adults when things seem to be beyond him, even going so far as to give his powers to Reigen at one point, because he can’t handle the responsibility on his own.
The way it’s positioned as a goofy comedy about an awkward kid allows for some unexpected emotional blows, and the artstyle (Which unlike One Punch Man didn’t get redrawn by a super-competent manga artist) primes our expectations for silliness, so you don’t immediately think about the bizzare nature of the fight scenes, and they can throw in a Street Fighter gag and you’ll hardly bat an eye.

In modern Anime, the focus seems to be keeping characters on-model so that any individual frame that you screenshot will look pretty. But making characters highly detailed and on-model also means they can’t move around as much, or it’d be a lot of redrawing keyframes. That means there’s a lot of nice-looking characters that stand around perfectly still doing lip-flap animation for dialogue.
The low line-weight of characters in MP100 means that there can be tons of motion and it won’t be that much more difficult to draw. Reigen moves and wiggles around and strikes crazy poses while talking because of this, making even very standard dialogue fun to watch. Studio Bones also goes the extra mile and throws in different styles of animation entirely, including Ink-on-glass (A technique which, as its name implies, involves smearing slow-drying ink across glass and photographing the results. Very time-consuming and difficult), the industry-standard CG, Graphite dust on paper, chalk, and I think I even saw some cut-paper style in there too. These are often used with ghosts or psychic phenomena, to imply that they don’t follow the same rules as the other characters.
In a recent episode, the solution of the problem was Mob making friends with a person that is sort of his darker half. The person Mob could’ve become if he hadn’t actively tried to go out and socialize, to make friends, to better himself. And the conclusion of this fight is they sit down and talk and become friends...not only did I not hate that I thought it was a fucking amazing conclusion to the penultimate battle of the arc.
TLDR: Mob Psycho 100 is my new favorite anime because Mob is the opposite of a standard shonen hero, animation is amazing, artstyle allows them to play with your expectations and animate things more.

Words About Games - Unreal Tournament 3 (Epic Games, 2007)
Unreal Tournament 3 is nothing short of an utter embarrassment, incompetent at nearly every level, and a gross misunderstanding of a playerbase that was, at the time, nearly a decade old.  I wish I could just leave it at that, but this is the first game I ever felt wronged by.  
This was a franchise killer.  UT3 flopped so hard that it took fans desperate for any sign of a new game ten years to make Epic even consider adding a new entry to the series, and even then it is, as of time of writing, on indefinite hiatus so the handful of developers assigned to it can make more Fortnite dances.  But that comes later.  Unreal Tournament 3 comes first.
The Unreal series was hardly a stranger to hard knocks.  Return to Na Pali was a dull-at-best expansion pack while the much-maligned Unreal 2 missed the point entirely and has since slipped into laughable obscurity, and even the original Unreal Championship on Xbox had to be redeemed with a well-received followup.  I played neither of those, by the way, it's just my understanding that the first one was bad and the second was good.
So what made UT3 the last chance?  What about it was bad enough to kill the franchise that had gone toe-to-toe with Quake and lived to tell the tale?  The real question is what the hell Epic was thinking.
Unreal Tournament 3 lacks a great many things.  At launch, it boasted a meager six gamemodes, and even then only by virtue of splitting 1v1 deathmatch maps off of Deathmatch and into a new category called Duel.  So, our gametypes are: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Duel, Capture the Flag, Vehicle CTF, and Warfare.  That's it.  No Bombing Run, no Mutant, no Invasion, no Domination (double or otherwise), and yet again, for some ungodly reason, no Assault.
I feel like I've done this before.  What else did UT3 leave out?  Facing Worlds!  Yep, it's out again, and this time without a replacement.  That's right, no Face 4 to make up for it.  A new Curse map, a staple of the series since the original Unreal multiplayer, is also missing.  Most of the character factions introduced in UT2003 and 2004 are gone, like the Nightmares, the Robots, the Juggernauts, the Mercenaries, the Gen Mo’kai, the Egyptians, and the Skaarj.  You know, the Skaarj, literally the most important faction to the series at large.  They're gone.  Xan Kriegor, the Big Bad of every Tournament since 1999, the final champ who uses an AI setting above Godlike, who has his own spaceship where the ultimate match is duked out 1v1 in a truly brutal and awesome deathmatch?  Gone.
But that's not the worst of it.  Sure, they stripped out almost everything they'd spent so much time building up throughout character and map descriptions for three games, but even that wasn't enough.  There has to be something else they could take away to really strip the game of its identity.  The Flak Cannon?  No, too easy.  The Shock Rifle?  Almost.  Malcolm, the veteran of all the in-universe Tournaments and arguably the (human) mascot of the series?  I'll do you one better.
They took away the Tournament.
They took away the Tournament.
They took away.
The Tournament.
Unreal Tournament 3 has no Tournament.  
What do we have instead, in Unreal Tournament 3, if not a Tournament?  Calling it Gears of War 1.5 is a good place to start.  
Unreal Tournament never really had a defining artstyle to call its own, but it was still recognizable.  UT99 had its harsh shadows and pockets of bright light on largely cool-colored maps, a very neo-industrial/tech vibe with a smattering of ancient temples thrown in there to call back to Unreal.  UT2003 and 4 turned their tech maps into something a bit shinier overall, left a bit of industrial grunge in, had their fun with future space techno Egypt, and splashed a bit of East Asian architecture in one or two maps for good measure.  Colors were bright, each map had an identifiable pallette, and it's hard to confuse one for the other.
UT3 came out after Gears of War, which means it looked like this:

Not helping matters is the new direction character design was taken, which basically boils down to taking Gears character out of their usual armor and putting them in UT styled suits.  Malcolm’s there and he's put on about 200 pounds of muscle.

Man, just look at all those graphics.  And it's a good thing there are so many, because otherwise how would we know what we're looking at when the dramatic cutscenes play?
Because since we have no Tournament in our Unreal Tournament game, we of course have to have a very dramatic story about a Krall invasion and this guy named Ronin’s quest to get revenge.  
Let's unpack that.
The Krall invaded.  The Krall, the mercenary/slave race kept on retainer by the Skaarj, are the primary antagonists, but not the Skaarj themselves.  Ronin, an entirely new character made for this game, is the primary focus when actual series (human) mascot Malcolm is right there.  And the whole thing is a heroic revenge story, not a Tournament.
I hate this game.
So UT3 forces a series of ladder matches across all of three gametypes into a narrative nobody asked for.  If it had had anything to with the series’ history, it probably could have been acceptable, but it doesn't mean anything as it is.  Matches are now short gameplay segments in between an overproduced narrative about revenge and retribution, and they're given wholly unnecessary context.  Deathmatch is no longer literal bloodsport to entertain the masses but a gritty, brutal battle of attrition until one side wears down the other side’s respawner charges.  Capture the Flag isn't a game, it's you taking a daring and gritty shot at capturing your ugly, inhuman enemy’s Field LAttice Generator to turn off their respawner.  Warfare/Onslaught isn't a fun territory control match, it's a gritty and unrelentingly brutal comment on how war is hell, as you capture territory to destroy the Core that powers your gritty enemy’s respawner.
Do you get it.  Respawners.  Real war.  Not a game anymore.  No fun allowed.
Sigh.
This game came out when I was late into highschool, and was one of the first games I was super excited about.  Back then I didn't actually play all that many games, tending instead to stick to a smallish library of my favorites.  So when UT3 was announced, originally as Unreal Tournament 2007, I was hyped.  It would be one of the first games on the brand-new Unreal Engine 3, and the handful of prerelease screenshots kept my attention for months with their unparalleled lighting and detail.  Blurbs about the changes they were making excited me, talking about how they were putting a bit more speed back into the game to win over the holdouts who thought UT2004 was too slow.  An entirely new roster of vehicles was going to sit alongside the existing ones, and a whole host of changes was coming to merge the best of UT99 with UT2004.
That's what they promised.  What was actually delivered was an anemic blend of half-baked executions.  People don't like double jumping and think UT2004 is too floaty, others like double jumping and think UT99 is missing critical movement options?  UT3 keeps double jumping but makes the total jump height of both equal to a single jump in UT99, removes wall and air dodging, and adds a noticeable recovery delay after dodging from the ground.  Cool, great.
People didn't like the weapon balance changes and replacements?  Toss out the Assault Rifle, bring back the Enforcer, but make it just as inaccurate as the AR!  Make the spread on the Flak Cannon’s primary tighter, but have its alt fire shell fall off even faster than UT99’s!  
That's not to say all of the changes were bad.  Believe it or not, Unreal Tournament 3 actually does have a handful of things I really like, which makes their presence in an overall worse game all the more painful.  Vehicle physics are greatly improved, the new vehicles are amazing, Adrenaline is gone, the Rocket Launcher has its grenades back, a lot of the new weapon designs are superb, powerups are back on the map, you get a hoverboard on Warfare and VCtF maps, and I'm all out of nice things to say.  
The game, visually, is a mess (see above).  A new graphics engine means new effects to play with, but those effects here are bloom and more bloom.  Players get lost in overstuffed scenery because the artstyle inherited from Gears of War is red on brown on gray.  A more grounded overall concept strips a lot of identity from returning maps, taking them from space or exotic locales and putting them in a generic futuristic cityscape.
That's a small complaint, and totally worth dismissing, but it shows a certain lack of respect to the history of the series, to me.  These are maps that have been iconic as a whole that have been repurposed to show off how many pixels can be crammed into a skybox.  When Facing Worlds was eventually re-added in UT3’s first and only content update, it was transplanted from two opposing towers on an asteroid spinning above Earth and just set in the mountains somewhere in China.  
If you're looking at it from a pure gameplay perspective then there's nothing wrong with the change.  But it's just part of an inherent ignorance as to what players wanted from this game.  We didn't want a weird storyline where we watch Epic mush per-pixel lit action figures into each other before graciously being allowed to capture the enemy’s Field Lattice Generator three times, we wanted to mush those action figures together ourselves as we climbed higher up the ladder towards facing the Tournament champion.  We wanted to thunder across whatever alien landscapes the map designer thought up that day and add another piece to the expansive puzzle of the Unreal universe, not spend two-thirds of the game puttering around China or the generic scifi city. 
Also, in going back to get those above screenshots, I discovered something I’d entirely forgotten: there are no map descriptions.  The strongest part of that good old fashioned world building is just gone.  No more short tales of a skyscraper built by a hubris-devoured crazy person, no more small insights into the shipping lines around this or that outpost, no more glimpses at all into the world beyond the game.  For them to suddenly make such a big deal about the story, Epic sure didn’t care about anything beyond their cutscenes.
But I guess I'm getting ahead of myself.  What else is in UT3?
Not a whole lot.  With a lack of gamemodes came a lack of maps, though I suppose 41 maps was still more than you could expect at the time.  The bonus pack that turned UT3 into the “Black Edition” (I have no idea) added 19 more and did, as previously mentioned, re-add Facing Worlds.  Mutators are also lacking, with a fair chunk appearing just as basic gameplay tweaks - no hoverboard, no Orb (we'll talk about the stupid Orb), no powerups, the Arena mainstay, no Translocator (just a game setting in all previous titles), friendly fire (also a previous game setting), game speed adjustments (yep, was a setting before), and your basic Instagib/big head/super berserk mutators like you always get.  
Gone are fun things like quad jump, vampire, big wheels, slow motion corpses, all the “other UT” mutators (UT Classic and UT 2003 Style if you recall), and vehicle arena.  Remember, no fun allowed.
And I sure do wish there was fun allowed, because some things almost are.  Warfare is the star here, or at least it should have been.  Imagine:  a map five times as large as the largest Onslaught map, still joined by paths of dozens of capture nodes linked together to create distinct fronts, laced in between guided objectives reminiscent of Assault scenarios.  Completing these objectives grants you unique bonuses on your path to the enemy Core, if you can make it past the army of players and vehicles ahead…
That's what Warfare was billed as, but that's not what Warfare ended up being.  What did it turn out as?  Literally Onslaught again, but with an Orb now.  
The Orb is a game-breakingly frustrating mechanic.  Here's how it goes:  the Orb spawns at a node you control.  Someone can pick up the Orb and carry it around, shooting a giant pillar of light into the sky wherever they go.  The Orb will instantly destroy and capture any enemy node it's brought to, and will be destroyed in doing so.  The player carrying the Orb can't use any vehicle except their personal hoverboard.  
The Orb either wins games outright or does stone nothing.  See, both teams get an Orb, so what happens most of the time is that one guy uses the Orb to capture a node, then the other Orb is used to take it back.  It's not like you can use it to get a sneaky capture, because of the giant pillar of light shooting into the sky and an icon on the minimap.  The Orb is stupid, and proper control of the map makes sure that absolutely nothing comes from its presence.  So good work Epic, you added another layer to a gamemode you already stripped back to exactly what we'd gotten before, and all that comes of it is absolutely nothing.
The new vehicles are cool though.  Everything from UT2004 makes a comeback with a tweaked design, and new Necris vehicles are added as well.  They're usually just an analog of an existing vehicle except with wiggly scifi tentacles, so you get a single-person hoverthingy and a VTOL jet with lasers and missiles, but they really outdid themselves with some of the other ones.  Filling the spot of the main battle tank for the new vehicles is a giant War of the Worlds style tripod that can clamber over most obstacles and terrain.  The light attack jeep spot is a laser-toting mini-walker that can retract its tendrils and roll around as a ball, squishing people on its merry way.  Like I said, not all bad.  Oh, but only one team gets them, and not all maps support their inclusion.  So only mostly bad.
But they are all that's left of a much larger gamemode that had more and more stripped from it until they were left with literally just Onslaught but with the Orb.  
And the bad things just kept coming, this time in regards to the music.  New composers were brought in again, in the form of Jesper Kyd and Rom DiPrisco, and they make a total mess of the place.  There are a good number of “remixes” present on the soundtrack, but where the musical genius Kevin Reipl took GoDown and made Hyperblast Redux, whichever of the duo made the UT3 remix of GoDown just added some modulation and a breakbeat.  Or maybe the classic Foregone Destruction, where the UT3 version just adds some modulation and a breakbeat.  Mechanism Eight?  Modulation and a breakbeat.  Skyward Fire?  Modulation and a breakbeat.  The classic Unreal Tournament theme itself?  Modulation and a breakbeat.  The instantly recognizable stage music for UT2004’s Torlan, SDG-ONS1?  Surprisingly, a mold-breaker here: no modulation, only an added breakbeat.  And someone wailing over it.  I get that it's supposed to have a vaguely Middle Eastern or whatever sort of vibe, ‘cause the original did and Torlan itself was set in a dusty oasis sort of thing, but they changed the setting for UT3 to be more temperate so I really have no idea.
My point is that the music in UT3 sucks.  Even past the embarrassing quality of the remixes, none of the original compositions are memorable.  There's no energy, there's nothing that plays to the idea of the game, and there's no bombast.  The music probably has its fans out there, but I'm about as far from one of them as you can get.
I’m also about as far from a fan of the game itself as you can get.  When this came out, I was mainly confused as to how it could be so bad.  It’s not like it was the first time I ever didn’t like a videogame, but for Unreal Tournament of all things to turn out so bad, I just didn’t really know what I was experiencing.  UT3 was so bad that within a month I was looking up tutorials on how to use UT2004’s editor.  A year or so later Epic put UT3 on Steam and added a content pack that turned it into Unreal Tournament 3: Black Edition (I still don’t know), but that added so little that it barely made a difference.  Two new gamemodes that just amounted to new types of Deathmatch, a handful of maps, and that was it.  
People made their own maps, sure, and I’m sure if I looked now I could find mods that make it a more bearable experience.  But at the same time, I’m not really sure.  Because see, UT3 didn’t just release on PC this time around, it also came out on PS3 and the Xbox 360.  Epic wanted to bring the award-winning modding scene to those platforms as well, which means the entire process of modding and the number of things that could be modded was cut way down to adhere to guidelines from both companies as well as the much more limited space available on the console’s hard drives.  I only ever looked into mods back around when the Black Edition dropped, and the most popular mods I remember from back then is just adding a Master Chief character model.
To say that Unreal Tournament 3 was a disappointment is perhaps the biggest understatement of this entire essay.  I’m not going to rant on about how it was a betrayal of brand integrity or something, because I’m not entirely that naive, but the failure of this game to do as much right as its predecessors or even impress on any great scale meant a lot for the arena shooter genre.  Id Software had bowed out and wouldn’t reappear with Rage until years later.  Halo was wrapping up its trilogy to critical acclaim.  Call of Duty was rapidly changing the face of shooters with Call of Duty 4.  Fallout 3 was near, Bioshock had come out a year or so prior, and Gears of War 2 would cement Epic’s new direction.  
There was no redeeming followup to Unreal Tournament 3.  Nothing came out to add Assault or Domination or Bombing Run back in.  It came out, bellyflopped, and Epic let it sit in the lovingly-rendered mud full of bloom and speculars that it landed in.  
In the decade-plus since then, the face of shooters has changed again and again.  CoD4 ushered in an unrelenting push towards modern-day settings, a small subset of shooters with RPG elements grew larger, Bungie made more Halo games and then Destiny, a whole indie subgenre popped up to try to let us relive the days of Doom and Quake, then a fantastic new Doom came out, and now everyone has a battle royale.  Even Epic.  
A few years ago on the official Unreal Tournament forums on Epic’s website, a group of fans formed a plan to make their own Unreal Tournament entry under a different name.  Work started, schedules were made, and it caught Epic’s attention as so many remake projects do.  But rather than end with a Cease & Desist like just about every other one out there, a few people from Epic expressed surprise that there was such a massive push and actually pledged their own support to the project.  Unreal Tournament 4 was suddenly an official project.  
It was a strange relationship, of course - Epic’s people gave it a place in their launcher and let it use their official servers, they signed off on all major updates and made everything nice and official, but the weapon, map, and character design was going to be on the community.  We can get into the ethics of that some other time, but the point was this:  Before all that long, there was a playable Unreal Tournament 4.  Maps were using placeholder art and geometry, most of the weapons were just the UT3 models, there was one character model, and all you could play was Deathmatch, but it was coming along.  And it did come along.  The Enforcer, Link Gun, Flak Cannon, Rocket Launcher, and Sniper Rifle were all finalized and modeled, a few maps were finished entirely and look gorgeous (and play really well!), and more character models were added.  
And then Fortnite got big.  
Fortnite, a weird little Orcs Must Die-alike with building and survival elements, wasn’t much of a big name until Epic added a battle royale mode of their own, not too long after Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds swept across the Steam Early Access scene.  What that meant for the UT4 project is that the handful of official Epic people who were getting paid to curate this giant mod endeavor were suddenly reassigned to work on something a little more immediate, namely Fortnite.  
The long and short of it is that Epic killed Unreal Tournament twice in a row.  There are still arena shooters out there.  Toxikk is basically just UT2004 deathmatch with a shiny coat of paint (I played a bit, it’s okay but lacks a lot in comparison); Quake Champions is a perfectly fine hero shooter with a lot of balance problems and way too few maps, plus it’s Quake which means all the problems I have remain; Tribes: Ascend came and went just as fast as players in it moved thanks to a suddenly overaggressive monetization model; and lately I guess Dusk has its multiplayer which I hear is pretty healthy.  
The arena shooter isn’t dead; no genre really can be, and I have firsthand experience with how much work can be done to keep individual games alive, but it’s certainly not a popular choice these days.  If so much has happened to the shooter genre at large since Wolfenstein 3D came out, that much and more can happen again.  More people are playing videogames than ever, technology marches onward, and maybe one day someone in the right position with the right resources will create something that finally puts the public eye back on the most classic of multiplayer shooters.
But until then, the decade of languishing that arena shooters have been the subject of is entirely Epic Games’ fault.

So...San Diego Comic Con
Another Year, Another SDCC happened. To be honest, I was never into sdcc until this year, and now that is over (I believe) I want to share my top 5 reveals/trailers that happened in these days. Before that, I want to say my honorable mention: The Aquaman trailer; Invader Zim; The Godzilla trailer; that Cartoon Network Crossover; Star vs Forces of Evil S4 Clip...that’s all I can remember. Okay let’s go

Back in 2016, I watched the pilot of this show....which l loved, and I was hoping one day this would be greenlight. And one day, Cartoon Network was like “....kay fine” And now, is coming for next year

4# SHAZAM! trailer

Okay, first of all, I like DC (even though I preffer marvel), like some of the animated shows and some of the animated movies (specially the Red Hood and Dark Knight Returns), but the real life movies...not so much. I mean, focusing on the DC Cinematic Universe, Batman V Superman I didn’t like, saw chunks of Justice League, which it bored me, and didn’t watch Wonder Woman (ok don’t kill me on this one, I saw clips of the movie and it looks good as heck, just need the motivation) So DC shows Titans....was ok for me, then it shows Aquaman, it looks nice, nothing mindblowing for me, but then...shazam, instead of being all dark and serious, they go with this...

which...I like...a lot, and I believe THIS is what DC needed, their Guardians of Galaxy/Ant-man. For what I see, I’m really looking foward, the child who plays as Billy does a nice job of portraying a kid character. The foster brother also does a nice part of his job.

Zachary Levi does a great job portraying this Superhero acting imature and childish (because, well...he’s a child) I don’t know what else to say, I believe this is going to be the one of the best, if no the best live action movie for DC.(Again, the trailer is here)
3# Amphibia Intro

Some while ago, Dinsey revealed two upcoming series. One was The Owl House and the other one was Amphibia. By just looking them, Owl house looked amazing, but I didn’t know what to think for the other one.

But then, the intro for Amphibia was shown, and by it looked, I ended up pleased as heck. The ambience, the style, the pacing, the music, that friking music, makes me want to see more of this shows.

Also it looks that is going to have like a fantasy, adventure, mistery tone, which is welcome I’m really hyped for this one and going to see it when it came out (Sadly, Disney didn’t show yet a HQ intro for amphibia, so you can whatch it here, provided by Ford in Bikini)

Okay, I know that showing just a image is not that amuzing, when they show a season finale trailer, and let me tell you, Magica is not joking around, but let me explain.

Donald duck is my favorite Disney character, period; and when they put him along side Panchito Pistoles and José Carioca, goddamn, I can smile like for a day. I really love watching this trio, from their movie (which was a fine movie, but the animated parts are amazing) to House of Mouse. Then, a few week(s) ago, they leaked the show “The Legend of Three Caballeros” which...is not bad, but not that good, and it doesn’t make justice to the trio.

So when they showed the upcoming characters for the next season, I was glad for their fans (not mind blowing for me, but happy to see them) but when they show Panchito and Jose, my mind was blown. I can’t wait for season 2 and how the crew behind this amazing show would handle these 2 characters

I know it’s just 20 seconds, I know they show the next episode and revealed White Diamond and White Pearl, and yes, those are also cool, but for me, this, this is just cool, it makes me think the journey that Steven, the cristal gems, Rebecca and The Crewniverse had for all this time.

For a show making a movie, is a big deal for the crew behind it (I know it’s a TV movie but still), so the budget for a movie is more than normal, so the team can update some of the animation. So I can’t wait for the movie of S.U, and can’t wait to see how the background would look, how the movement of the characters would be, and many many more. Also the reveal of this character.

I remember seeing this shape heart stone on a comic of Steven, with the two Topazes. Also, with this, would be fun to read/watch the theories many fans would do, which is interesting for me with the ideas or clues they came out. So yeah, I can’t wait for this movie and what Steven Universe will bring us to the future.

No one knows what they're doing
Today's blog is a tad different, it's more of a story-time kind of thing. Hope you enjoy it~
One of the highlights from when I was back in game dev university is how we always had professionals of the industry around; most of the time they were our teachers, but in others, they came themselves to give us talks about their experiences. I'm now going to share the one that stuck with me the most:

The person that gave us the talk, we'll call him Michael, was a man in his late 20s or early 30s. He was spunky and very visibly passionate about gaming in general. His story started off with him getting out of college and wanting to make games, so he got together with a group of friends and opened up a little game studio to work on their dream project.
Eventually, at some point during development, the game spawned enough interest for a group of investors to come in and finance the game; that way, Michael and his studio could work full-time on it and deliver the best product possible.
From what he said, development went well for a good number of months, but the deadlines given by the investors were so tight that the people in the studio began feeling extremely worn out, to the point in which some began parting ways with the project entirely.
In the end, Michael had a meeting with the investors, saying that the conditions they presented were too harsh for them to work on. The investors threatened to sue Michael for a ridiculous sum of money if the project was terminated; they owned the rights of the game, so if development wasn't going to be completed, Michael and the rest would have to kiss their project goodbye entirely or be taken to court.
Even today, Michael was subject to a pretty strict NDA around the game, put in place by the investors, so he was very picky with what he'd show us about it. From what I saw, it was an incredible-looking game: The artstyle was delightful, the story was very light-hearted and the game mechanics were solid and very creative.
It is worth noting that it all seemed pretty finished, too. A complete shame that a game at such a developed stage had to be shelved for a legal/economical dispute, which must've been heart-breaking for Michael, and it showed.
After giving up on the project that they had been working for about a year and a half, Michael and who was left of his crew started working on a second game. Given that this one lacked investors (and pesky NDA's), Michael was way more liberal about showing us game assets. This second project had a very similar level of polish than the original, granted they were totally different games, and it showed a lot of potential.
I won't go into details about it, but it was a very unique-feeling puzzle game; with a cute story and very tight, simple, yet expandable mechanics. Hell, Michael told us that in a day, he'd whip up a number of levels, and they were all quite different. It was a very promising-looking game, and quite finished too, but due to disputes with Michael and the rest of his team, it unfortunately had to be scrapped too.
Two consecutive failures of this calibre left Michael in quite the financial pickle, him having to move back to his parents' place; he was just about ready to give up on his dream of being a dev, but not without one last shot.
Everyone that was left of his team aside from himself was one another person, and the two decided to work on their last project.
Michael told us that he and the other guy made the game in record time, about two weeks if I recall correctly. They used mostly leftover assets that they had from their past projects, and even repurposed some of the music. After that, they spend the following weeks polishing up everything in order to bring it to a showcase event.
These events are quite popular in the game development scene; as practically anyone can show up and present their game, even have a little demo for the attendees to try out. They're a great chance to socialize, or if you're extremely lucky, get your game out there.
Michael and his partner set up a janky-ass setup for their game and people lined up to play it. One of them was this middle-aged man, and he had a trolley suitcase with him. After doing the line, he tried the game and it brought a wide smile to his face. He said "Thank God; all the games I've tried today have been awfully disappointing and I was about to leave to catch my flight home, but this game is truly something else! Here, have my business card". The man ended up being a publisher for a fairly relevant game development company that I won't name.
To not drag this any further: Michael's game made in two weeks ended up being a top hit; hitting the #1 charts for the most downloaded games on iOs for more than a dozen different countries. He actually made it, despite all the mishaps that happened along the way.
He then wrapped up the story with a single point, and that is that in the game industry, no one knows what they're doing.
No one can guarantee that their game will be successful, not even the largest companies. Everyone has amazing ideas, but who can guarantee that people will like them, or that the game will sell at all? No one, really.
Companies don't want to risk most of the time, and that really gives indie developers a chance to shine, because they're the ones that are willing to risk it all believing their games will be amazing and pull through, much like Michael ended up doing.
I suppose that this all boils down to having the adequate mindset while making a game. You must develop a game that you'll be proud of, one that you would want to play if you were just hearing about it; with that, the rest is unimportant. You shouldn't be seeking success, but rather bring a memorable experience that as many people as possible will play.
If circumstances don't allow your game to be completed, or your game doesn't end up doing well, those are things that just happen, and you can't say that you didn't try. Failing is what gives you the insight to not make the same mistakes again, so keep trying and perhaps you'll make something great that'll inspire many people to create, too!
Every professional has their own pile of failures behind their back, and you can bet that they're damn proud of them, because they're the reason they made it so far.
