short books recs (under 200 pages)
1. Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa
This book follows Sentaro, who runs a dorayaki stall, and his friendship with Tokue, who makes killer sweet bean paste. It is a heart-warming and endearing story that brings you comfort. I love the friendship between Sentaro and Tokue, especially seeing how it develops. The ending feels a little rushed. I kind of wished it was longer. Kind of sad. I cried. 10/10 would read again.
2. Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi
The Funiculi Funicula cafe provides a time-traveling service, and the book, divided into four parts, retells different characters' experiences traveling in time. I always associate time-traveling with angst and regret, and this book has just that. I love how each part explores different relationship dynamics, so the time-traveling experience varies for each character. Very heart-warming, but very emotional as well. Cried a lot. It's a series but you don't have to read other books. But if you want more info on the cafe and the characters' backstory, then I highly recommend reading the other books.
3. Heaven by Mieko Kawakami
This book revolves around two students, who are victims of bullying. Due to their shared struggle, a friendship blossoms between them. The depiction of bullying and its impacts is raw and authentic, the story providing the perspectives of both the victims and the perpetrators. It was a rage-inducing but thought-provoking read.
4. The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
This book follows Nana the cat as he embarks on a road-trip with his owner, Satoru. Now, cats are my absolute weakness. I love cats. I WOULD DIE FOR THEM. Which is why reading this book was hard and painful. The writing is witty, since it is written from the perspective of a cat. The plot itself is kind of predictable, but it doesn't make it any less painful. Tldr; Shredded my heart into pieces. Cried so hard, I couldn't breathe.
5. Almond by Won-Pyung Sohn
The story follows the main character, Yunjae, who suffers from a rare condition called Alexithymia that essentially makes him unable to feel emotions. Due to that, he couldn't understand social cues so people shun him. The development of the story centers on the people Yunjae are going to meet, and how his relationship with these people develops. The ending felt a little anticlimactic, but I loved it nonetheless.
6. Eartheater by Dolores Reyes
The unnamed protagonist can locate missing people and find out their fate by eating dirt, so people seek her to know the fate of their missing loved ones. It was definitely an interesting read, with elements of magical realism in relation to the protagonist's ability. It is also an intriguing depiction of femicide, a reflection of a system that continuously fails women. I felt rage for the women failed by the system and the sufferings they had to endure at the hands of hateful men.
7. A House is a Body by Shruti Swamy
This book is a collection of short stories, which is a raw and authentic depiction of what it is like being human. I enjoyed certain stories, while some left me utterly confused. The narratives are enticing and poetic, so despite some stories not hitting that hard, I enjoyed the writing.
8. The Vegetarian by Han Kang
After having a bizarre dream, Yeong-Hye declares that she is turning vegetarian, and this sudden change concerned her family. I made the mistake of thinking that this book is merely a depiction of what it's like to be a vegetarian. HELL NO. It utterly deviates from my expectation. I could only describe the book as bizarre and spooky, in an unconventional way. It depicts the complexity of the human mind when the contraint of societal expectations is disregarded.

I’m making a list of light novel I’ve heard, and if anybody has a recommendation please leave it here
LIGHT NOVEL
✓ Genius of a Performing Arts High [ch104] Hiatus.
Summary: After 10 years of dedicating his life to opera ever since he had quit the performing arts high school, he had failed at an interview. Losing his motivations, Jo Yunjae depended on alcohol to live out his days until one day, he had been sent back 20 years in time, to the day before his high school admission.
The reason for his time travel nor the terrible condition his body was in did not matter to him. The one and only, most important thing was that he could still sing, not as the previous baritone but as a long-coveted tenor.
Oh this one has a lot of musical jargons, but you could learned to ignore some of them or perhaps searched up each meaning. But this one is quite unique considering it focuses upon Opera as a theme, although apparently there’s a harem tag (but the mc isn’t really aware of it, more like he sees the others in a fatherly way of sort). It hasn’t been updated for 2 years and currently it’s status is in Hiatus. There is no Manhwa adaptation for it.
✓ If I Fail to Debut I'll Get A Killer Disease [ch423/505]
Summary: A 4th-year student who was preparing for the Civil Service examination, suddenly found himself in an unfamiliar body 3 years ago. As well as a status window displaying a threat in front of his eyes! [Outbreak!] [Status Abnormality: ‘Debut or Death’ Occurs!]
A diary about the transformation of the main character, who was suddenly challenged to be an idol even though he has never been in the industry before due to sudden threat of death. ※Speciality: He used to take and sell idol’s data.
The translation I’ve found only stopped until there. I’ve been patiently waiting for updates and it has been a month since the last one! The plot has a lot of twist on the classic idol take. Currently there’s a newly Manhwa adaptation for it but it’s only in the early stage of 17 chapters or so. If you would like to check it out, the Manhwa name is a bit different from the novel but the sentiment remains the same “Debut or Die”
✓ Superstars of Tomorrow [ch507] Complete.
Summary: Well-known Composer Fang Zhao was in the glorious stage of his career, when the Apocalypse arrived; After finally experiencing the bitter difficulties of a thousand dangers, when the Apocalypse was simmering down to an end, he collapsed; When he opened his eyes, he was reborn in a New World, 500 years after the end of the apocalypse, in the body of a student who had been dumped barely after graduation, who had been cheated of his hard work barely after he started working…
The World of the Future, Virtual Idols PK Real Idols
“Every time background music plays in my head, I feel like there is nothing to be afraid of.” —Fang Zhao
As recently stated, this one has been completed. And there is still no manhua adaptation of it to this day. I enjoy this novel thoroughly, the ride was wild and full of humour! Although the journey started through the works of virtual idol, it doesn’t necessarily confined only there because there’s still the fields of music, gaming, acting, history and military arcs that MC would dominate in would also bring such enjoyment!
✓ Losing Money To Be A Tycoon [ch1670] Complete.
Summary: I really just want to lose money! T_T
Best boss ever, prodigy of the business world, genius creator, visionary of the century.
These are the descriptions used for Pei Qian, President of Tengda Corporation.
Ever since his rebirth, Pei Qian finds himself in possession of a system that rewards him if he manages to lose money.
Instantly, a brilliant idea comes to mind — making crappy games!
“If the game flops, all my investment cost will be lost!”
“How difficult can it be to lose money?”
Indeed… how difficult can it be?
This was an enjoyable ride. I cherished every moment of each chapter I was reading for the entire week. I actually like the concept where they expanded more on the storyline idea of a supposed script for a film or a layout plot for a game because it’s always makes me invested in it and makes me feel like in the shoes of others and what they’re witnessing, the kind of content they’re consuming by the detailed description that I could almost imagine how it would be like. The last couple of chapters makes me so emotional, like this is what it builds up to and the realisation and the decision chosen is just “growth”. There was a manhua adaption of it but it contains rather few chapters from what I’ve heard… I might read it as well as soon as it accumulates more chapters to be read to truly see it all in action, illustrations.

a good old get to know me meme
Tagged by @bidonica! let's take a look! :)
3 ships you like:
Actually? Currently I could say:
Armand and Daniel from the Vampire Chronicles/AMC's IWTV, because it's been a wild ride since I decided to sit down to read these books and watch the adaptation, so it's something that puts a big smile on my lips every time I think about them.
Sam and Higgs I guess... but it's not something I can control or feel good about because it causes me a lot of anxiety so it ends up leading me down more negative paths, but all because it's only the beginning of a story and then we have DS2 next year and that's just fuel to drive me crazy about how their relationship will develop. I'm putting so much energy into both of them that I need to sit down and breathe about it, otherwise it will do me real harm to design something that I have no control over…
Here Bosselot will be above Otasune because they got to me first and most intensely, and in this case (as in Armand and Daniel) their story is already over so I have an outside view of it all and can work out my feelings about them better. But is that what it's about at first? How do I feel about the three ships I like the most at the moment?? It's crazy and it's no different here. They don't put a smile on my lips, they cause me more damage than Sam and Higgs and yet I stop and think "how can something that is extremely sad, makes me sad, still be so good?" - haha crazy.
First ship ever: My first ship was when I discovered Kpop, so it would definitely be YunJae (Yunho and Jaejoong).
Last song you heard: My Dearest Friend and Enemy by Tamino I guess...
Currently reading: After marathoning the Vampire Chronicles books and gaining some literary traumas, I haven't been able to sit down to read anything else, but lately I've tried to read a few pages of a book called 'From the Pharaohs to Quantum Physics'. It's a book that explains reincarnation from the point of view of various doctrines, sects and philosophies.
Currently watching: Watching nothing at the moment, but the last time I tried to watch something was a few episodes of the first season of IWTV and a movie with Norman Reedus called 'Dark Harbor' from 1998.
Currently consuming: There's a bottle of water next to me so it's important to stay hydrated.
Currently craving: a miracle.

Almond Review
Tumblr media
Rating: 5/5 ⭐️
Warnings! Mentions: murder, gang violence, family complications And of course spoilers!
Won-Pyung Sohn made her literary debut in 2017 with her novel Almond, a novel that follows Yunjae, a young boy born with alexithymia, a brain condition that makes it difficult for him to feel emotions like anger, fear, etc. He struggles to make friends and interact with the kids his age, but his loving and devoted mother and grandmother him with shelter and love as they try to overcome his condition together with their second-hand bookshop. That is all until a random act of violence that leaves his world shaken, leaving him on his own; alone. In his attempts to grieve and cope with the sudden loss, he meets troubled classmate Gon, new to his school. The two become a ragtag team of sorts and build a friendship together where Gon becomes a new teacher for Yunjae on emotions. When Gon is faced with danger, Yunjae has to decide if he can step outside of his comfort zone to safe his friend from peril and become the hero of his own story.
This story absolutely lived up to the hype! I initially learned about this book on tiktok sometime in June of 2023(?) and managed to find it in store the following week and it was the best decision I've ever made! This book is definitely one for anyone, simply because it's that good. It gets you hooked, it's easy to follow along - thanks to the first-person perspective that makes understanding Yunjae so much easier - and the ending is just so feel good.
Another thing I LOVED in this book was the relationship between Yunjae and Gon. Though it might be a stereotype to have the misfit duo; a loner/outsider character paired with the troubled character with a dark backstory, it's ultimately forgiven by how wholesome and wonderful the relationship between the two is, and how we get to witness them build their chemistry at a really even pace as well. My favourite between the two is the final few chapters where Yunjae goes to save Gon from Steel Wire, the leader of a gang made by troubled, orphaned teens. You really see how much the two care for each other and how important they are to one another with the way they defended one another in attempt to escape Steel Wire.
Tumblr media
I don't really have much else to say because it's something you have to experience to understand, but here is a small collection of quotes that I liked from the book:
“Whenever life pulled brutal pranks on him, Gon would think that life was like having your mom hold your hands one moment, warm and safe, then suddenly drop them with no explanation. No matter how hard he tried to grab hold, he was always abandoned in the end.”
“To me, that's like being asked, Why do you live? Do you live for any purpose? Let's be honest, we just live because we're alive. When things are great we're happy, and when things aren't, we cry. Same with running. I'll be happy when I win, I'll be sad when I don't. When I feel I haven't got it, I'll blame myself or regret starting this in the first place. But then I'll still run. Just because! Like living life. That's all!”
“If you think about it that way, then it would’ve been better if Gon had never been born. Because, more than anything, he wouldn’t have had to feel so much pain and loss. But everything loses its meaning if you think that way. Only purpose remains. Barren.”
"I stared at the period after "Truly" for a long time. I hoped that period could transform Gon's life. Would we ever meet again? I hoped so. Truly."
This review is a bit shorter but I hope it was still enjoyable. Thank you for reading <3

~~~
On Tuesday morning, Yunho walks into school with a lot less trepidation than he had the day before, but he still keeps his head on a swivel. Just because he didn't happen to see the Jaejoong guy yesterday doesn't mean it might not still happen today, and he needs to remain vigilant if he wants to avoid that weirdness at all costs.
Last week had been normal enough. He had a quiz on Monday, Sooyoung broke up with him on Tuesday, morning hapkido practise on Wednesday, Yuri asked him out on Thursday, and they had a date on Friday. Pretty typical week for him, girlfriend parts included. (Through no effort nor encouragement on his part, he often gets asked out by a new girl within a few days of the previous girlfriend breaking up with him. He doesn't question it.)
The weirdness commenced immediately afterwards. He longs for the return to his previous cycle of studying, hapkido practise, and making time to hang out with his friends; but a strange classmate he had never met before just had to insult him and insist on a very suspicious, slipshod plan to address perceived personality flaws he isn't convinced he has.
An optimistic part of his heart believes if he can just make it through the week with nothing particularly noteworthy happening to him, that comforting routine will resume.
This illusion is shattered immediately after school when he finds Jaejoong inspecting his motorbike. He tampers down his dread and tries to remain optimistic about the impending interaction. "Can I help you with something?"
"Yeah, what's the engine capacity on this thing?" the other student asks as he squeezes the handlebars and pokes around until he finds the horn. Yunho would rather he didn't, but he is willing to let Jaejoong play pretend with his ride if it means the conversation can remain normal.
"50 cc," he answers haltingly. "I can't drive anything more powerful than that until I can get my car license; that was the deal I made with my mom in order to get the bike." Jaejoong nods but doesn't say anything to that, instead flipping up the kickstand and settling into the seat. He makes grabby hands for the helmet in Yunho's grip, and Yunho watches him clumsily fit it over his head.
He faces Yunho and lifts up the shield. "Is that a lot?"
He knows staring is rude, but Yunho can't help it. "Why would you ask if you wouldn't know what the answer meant?"
Jaejoong shrugs. "I heard my dad say it once, and it seemed like the thing to say. I totally sounded like I knew what I was talking about, though, right?" He grins, waiting for Yunho to be impressed.
Yunho keeps him waiting. He is currently preoccupied by striving to make peace with the fact that if the other student was not here to talk about automobiles, he must be here for the other reason. The weird reason. He takes a deep breath. "Can I help you with something?" he tries again.
Jaejoong hops off the moped without properly setting down the kickstand, and Yunho rushes to right his tilting vehicle. "I'm here to help you, remember? I'm going to teach you how to date! We're starting today."
"I didn't agree to this." He wants to sound authoritatively disencouraging, but the slight whine under his words probably dampens the effect.
"Doesn't matter; I'm not doing this for you." Jaejoong gestures with his hand for Yunho to follow him, and Yunho tells himself he only does so so that he can retrieve the helmet still snug on the other's head.
Speaking of heads, something clicks in his. "Is this for Sooyoung? Are you trying to get me back together with her?"
"Oh my god, no," Jaejoong refutes immediately. "Even after I'm through with you, you will not be good enough for her."
Yunho elects not to debate that. "So why are you putting us through this?"
Jaejoong leads them around the perimeter of the school's campus until they reach the narrow alley between the auditorium and the gymnasium. There are cigarette butts and fast food wrappers littered on the ground, but the sun is still providing enough illumination so that the space doesn't feel cramped and grimey.
He flexes his torso to avoid collision when the other makes a sharp stop at the mouth of the alley and faces him. "I'm getting the sense you don't want to do this," Jaejoong starts rhetorically, "so why don't you just tell me 'no'?"
Yunho wants to stare into a fourth wall camera, mockumentary-television-style. "I did."
"Actually, you didn't," Jaejoong retorts pedagogically. He takes off Yunho's helmet and kneels to set it on a relatively unadorned square meter of concrete, continuing, "On Friday you denied needing any help at all; and just earlier you simply said you did not agree to my tutoring; yet here you are, standing in the Backstreet with me without even questioning where I was taking you."
Yunho stumbles a step back when Jaejoong springs up to look at him with peering eyes. "So I'll ask again: why don't you just tell me 'No, I'm not going to do this'?"
He opens his mouth, willing his larynx to utter that first syllable, to tell Jaejoong off for all the ways he's insulted him in their brief hours of acquaintance, to say anything—but nothing comes out.
Jaejoong pulls back with a decisive nod. "That's what I thought. Alright, first test! Ask me out on a date."
Now would be a great time to learn how to say 'no'. An incredulous "But you're a dude!" comes out instead.
He doesn't like the resulting smirk on Jaejoong's face. It makes him feel like he telegraphed his attack to his opponent, and all he can do is wait for the winning blow to strike him. "That will continue to be true for every lesson in the curriculum, so I suggest you get over that quickly."
Getting things over with quickly sounds like a great idea, actually. "Okay, fine. Would you like to go get Lotteria with me this afternoon?"
Jaejoong rolls his eyes so hard his neck and head go with it, and Yunho begins to understand there will be no speedrunning this game. "What was wrong with that?" he demands.
"I'm not even going to comment on your tone of voice because I know some girls like the whole tsundere shtick, but what the hell is up with you and Lotteria? Fast food chains are not first date material! I get that we're in high school; but even if that's all you can afford, you should at least take it to go and continue the date somewhere more romantic. There's a park literally five blocks from there."
Yunho's defensiveness lowers to make room for realization. He honestly never thought of that before.
Jaejoong facepalms. "I see I have my work cut out for me."
Yunho does not let himself be bothered by the statement. With his new understanding, he is eager to try again, but Jaejoong holds out a hand to stop him before he could open his mouth. "The moment passed. Try again when I'm not expecting it."
"You were expecting it earlier though…?" Yunho tries to point out, but Jaejoong shakes his head. "Yeah, but at least I didn't know what you were going to say or suggest we do. If you ask me again right now, where's the shock value? The anticipation?" He punctuates his argument with a satisfied smile that borders on condescending, and that's Yunho's last straw.
When Jaejoong moves to step around him and leave, Yunho sticks his arm out to his side to block him. The alley is narrow enough that his palm is almost flush with the brick of the building, and it only takes one step to crowd into Jaejoong's space and force him against the wall.
Their bodies aren't quite touching, but Jaejoong's surprised exhale still easily reaches the skin between Yunho's nose and lips. His perpetually teasing eyes seem deeper now, or maybe they just look that way because of how intently Yunho is looking into them.
"How's this for shock value?" His words are only loud enough for Jaejoong to hear him clearly, and his voice naturally goes gravelly from the low volume.
Jaejoong's eyes narrow back into amused slits. "You have my attention."
"Good. We should go on a date this afternoon. Grab some food, go somewhere. I know a place."
Jaejoong quirks an eyebrow, then his gaze breaks from Yunho's to study his arm, then his face, then the position they're in. If this is an intimidation tactic, Yunho refuses to budge.
Finally, he frowns in impressed approval. "This will do, Jung, but it won't work for a second date." He swipes Yunho's arm away with no further warning and smoothly ducks out of the new opening. It is only the reflexes honed from years of hapkido that save Yunho from losing his balance against the wall.
He turns to find Jaejoong picking up Yunho's helmet and propping it between his arm and his hip. "I hope you have some extra headgear because I plan on travelling by motorbike tonight."
Later, when he'll think of Jaejoong, the sight of him framed by the alley entrance, backlit by the high sun and taunting, will be the image his brain supplies for reference.
~~~
"... So I have him pinned; I'm centering myself, preparing to throw him; and when I crouch for extra leverage, crzrhszhrshzhrshhh!" Yunho mimes a ripping motion in the air. "My pants are literally split into two halves, right down the center seam."
He has to raise his voice to be heard over Jaejoong's boisterous laughter. "I still won the match, though."
"Oh my god, of course you did! You can't lose after showing the entire gymnasium your underwear!"
"It helps that red's my lucky colour."
"Got it. You wear red when you wanna get lucky." Jaejoong keeps his voice deadpan, but his eyebrows still waggle, and it's Yunho's turn to laugh.
The park that Jaejoong mentioned is one Yunho has been to plenty of times before, but he can't recall the most recent time he went. It's an awkwardly long and narrow stretch, having originally been zoned as a residential block before someone along the way decided that it should be greenspace in order to attract families to the neighbourhood. Most of the block is taken up by grass and trees except for a children's playground on one end and a paved, oblong walking path that more or less follows the perimeter of the block.
After picking up their food, they walked to the park and wordlessly agreed to take a few laps on the path. He finished and trashed his meal a while back, but Jaejoong still has his drink in one hand and a pouch of fries in the other.
"I gotta say," Jaejoong says after a while of companionable walking, "I was dreading this first date, but you're doing great so far."
"Thanks," Yunho says without gratitude.
"Seriously. Why weren't you this talkative last Friday?"
He frowns. He thought that had been one of his better first dates, the fact that Yuri didn't ask him out again notwithstanding. Unfortunately, however, he knows he has a habit of exactly what Jaejoong is describing, so he speaks generally.
"I don't know how to talk to girls, man. I get that the point of the first date is to discover whether we have anything in common, but all I do is hapkido and study. Girls get tired of those topics really quickly, and I never have anything else to talk about. It's easier to just let them say whatever they want and then react accordingly."
Jaejoong stops himself from taking another sip of his drink to respond, and the ice in his cup clinks loudly as he uses that hand to gesticulate. "No, no, no. Here's the thing: the stuff you're trying to find in common are not necessarily hobbies, though that's great too. What you're actually looking for are matches in personality. You can discover a little bit of that through the things people do to occupy their time, sure, but you discover a lot more in the way people talk about those things. The topic doesn't matter as much as the presentation. Like, just now, you were telling that story about your hapkido tournament. It wasn't fun because it was a funny thing to happen to you but because you had fun telling it! Treat all your conversations like that, and you'll never have an awkward date again."
That's all well and good, but, "It's different with you! I'm not trying to date you."
Jaejoong purposefully steps in front of Yunho and halts their walk. "As of today, you are, though. That's why we're here." He shakes his ice cup in Yunho's face for emphasis. "We're on a date."
Yunho forgot, honestly. Sometime between parking the moped and arriving at the park, he stopped feeling observed, and it just felt fun.
"Do we have to go on dates? Can't you just tell me all the things you think I need to know? You did a great job earlier, explaining the personality and presentation stuff."
The other frowns but takes a moment to think. Yunho hopes this means that the next time he and Jaejoong hang out, it will be a normal meetup.
By the way Jaejoong snaps his fingers a few seconds later, Yunho knows his hopes are dashed. "You've taken chemistry already, right?"
Ah. He lolls his head backwards in resigned understanding. "Okay, fine. You learn the theory, you conduct an experiment to observe the concepts in practise, and the results underscore the lesson. Fine, I get it. We go on dates."
His head snaps upright when Jaejoong rams his elbow into Yunho's arm. "You weren't supposed to say all that smart stuff!" the other complains.
"What?!"
"You were supposed to be like, 'Uh, yeah, why?' and then I'd be like, 'Well, it doesn't count because you've never taken chemistry taught by me~' and it was gonna be charming enough to convince you, but now I can't because it sounds dumb compared to your really good point!"
Jaejoong elbows him again, and Yunho lets him because it is so powerless and ineffectual. "Hitting me is not very charming."
"Everything I do is charming!" Jaejoong refutes, but he stops immediately. When Yunho resumes their walk, he follows along without raising his hand again except to facilitate the stubborn slurping of his remaining drink.
When they round the bend that would take them back to the park entrance closest to Lotteria, Yunho opens, "So, got any more nuggets of wisdom for me before our date wraps up, Prince Charming?" The sun isn't obviously setting, but the world does seem cast in more orange than it did a few hours ago when they left the school.
Jaejoong narrows his eyes at him. "You're teasing me, but joke's on you because I like that nickname. And yes: the advice I gave you before only applies while you're doing the talking, but there's nothing a girl likes less than being talked at instead of talked to… You can't just let her talk either, though. Ask her questions; be curious about her. Bonus: it'll hide the fact you've run out of things to say, since you're worried about that."
Yunho considers this. "What about you?"
"What about me?"
"I'm being curious about you. If you're so charming and you've amassed all this great dating knowledge, why aren't you dating anyone?"
Jaejoong straightens up. "Who says I'm not?"
"I highly doubt she'd be okay with you going on dates with me instead of her if she were real."
Jaejoong deflates. "He probably wouldn't be, you're right," he says with a wry smile.
Oh. "Yeah, okay, I see how that could pose some challenges."
The other student waves his hands and loses a fry for his troubles. "It's not a challenge. I haven't been looking, and I'm not just saying that so that I don't look pathetic in front of the guy who's had more girlfriends than I have pimples."
Yunho does a quick scan. "Your skin is clear."
"Thank you." Jaejoong bounds for a garbage can up ahead, and Yunho follows at a slower pace. "I'm the understudy for the lead in the spring musical, and I'm trying to get the lead in both productions for my final year. It involves a lot of hard work and kissing ass. I'm also an alternate for the badminton club and trying to keep my GPA above a 2.5. A boyfriend would just cut into my time."
"And this tutoring thing you're trying to do for me wouldn't?"
"Don't worry about my schedule," Jaejoong counters snippily, "This is all about you. Speaking of…"
They exit out of the park, and Yunho raises an eyebrow when Jaejoong doesn't follow him back towards where they parked. "Mini lesson: You should always take your date home, but don't worry about today. I'm gonna take the bus," he says with a thumb over his shoulder, pointing to a bus stop Yunho knows is stationed down the block. "I have to run an errand for my mom."
Yunho nods in understanding and feels distantly grateful for the abrupt end to their time together. Walking his Jaejoong to his front door on their first date is a little bit too much for him.
He figures this is goodbye, but Jaejoong keeps talking. "You haven't asked me for my cellphone number yet, by the way."
"I was supposed to?"
"Uh, yeah. I'm not just your dating tutor; I'm your pretend girlfriend! 'Observe the concepts in practise,' remember?"
This naturally begs the question, "Why aren't you my pretend boyfriend, then?"
"Is that what you want to be telling your hapkido friends when you explain to them why you can't hang out after school on date nights?" Jaejoong claps his hand to underscore his point. "'Concepts in practise,' hello!"
His brain unhelpfully reminds him that he didn't say 'no' to Jaejoong's question earlier in the Backstreet, and that is why he is having this inane conversation. Then he gets an idea. "Okay, well, if I'm practising…" He straightens, tries to affect a serious aura. By the other's raised eyebrows, he thinks it worked. "Jaejoong, I like you. Learning from you, that is. Can I be your practise boyfriend?"
Jaejoong doesn't say anything for a second, long enough for Yunho to actually feel really stupid about asking in the first place, but then he smiles. It's not tinged with ulterior motives or hinting at a teasing comment, but unrestrained and happy. It actually looks kind of good on him—until he forcibly suppresses it.
Yunho smirks. He hoped to fluster Jaejoong, but he still considers this a success. "This is the first time anyone's ever asked to be your boyfriend, isn't it?"
"No!" but it's rote and futile.
"I should find myself a more qualified dating tutor. Someone who's honest with me and has more experience."
"Good luck finding anyone with the patience." Jaejoong sneers and turns to walk to the bus stop, but Yunho rushes around to make Jaejoong face him. He smiles in conciliation. "If it makes you feel any better, it's also the first time I've asked to be someone's boyfriend."
Jaejoong purses his lips, but he doesn't avoid looking at him. Yunho grins. "Well, come on. Don't leave me hanging. What do you say?"
Like earlier, Jaejoong quirks an eyebrow before breaking his gaze from Yunho's to study him. Unlike earlier, Yunho doesn't feel like this is a test he can possibly fail.
"Yes," he finally says, and Yunho will question later why he is relieved by the syllable. "We're officially practise dating."
~~~
A/N (4.4.2023): I've introduced the ways Jaejoong and Yunho spend their free time, but I don't intend on exploring those much unless it directly concerns their emotional development. Just know that in the background, the spring musical and a hapkido tournament are imminent for the two. Thanks for reading this far!
Cuando abrió los ojos, Jaejoong sintió inmediatamente que estaba sonriendo. Se incorporó en la cama y miró alrededor, como si esperara ver a Yunho ahí, aún sabiendo que ya era de mañana y Yunho se había ido hace horas.
Yunho…
Efectivamente todo lo que hicieron la noche anterior fue hablar, en una de las conversaciones más interesantes y amenas que Jaejoong había tenido en su vida. Aprendió que Yunho era un estudiante de derecho de Seúl, que habia congelado sus estudios para tomarse un año sabático y poder conocer mejor su país y que, en uno de sus destinos, había conocido a una chica de la que se había enamorado, y con la que planeaba casarse. Jaejoong había sentido como si sus entrañas fueran de plomo mientras Yunho le contaba de su prometida, aunque ya supiera el final de esa historia.
“Y el día de nuestra boda, desapareció y no volvió más.” había terminado la historia el mayor.
“¿Cómo sabes que no volverá luego?”. Preguntó Jaejoong tímidamente, a lo que Yunho respondió mostrándole el colgante de mariposa.
“No quiso un anillo de compromiso, sino ésto. Y el día de nuestra boda lo encontré sobre mi velador. Ninguna nota, nada. Pero sé lo que significa.” dijo con una sonrisa amarga.
Ante el recuerdo de la triste expresión de Yunho, la sonrisa de Jaejoong se esfumó, y se levantó violentamente de su futón. Ni siquiera conocía a esta chica que había dejado plantado a Yunho, pero la odiaba. Y la envidiaba también, tanto por haber tenido -o aún tener- el amor de Yunho como por haber experimentado amor correspondido simplemente.
Sin que ninguno dijera nada habían acordado que Yunho siempre sería su segundo cliente, para así poder hablar tranquilamente sin el apuro de otro cliente luego de él. A pesar de que Jaejoong fruncía el ceño cuando Yunho le pagaba, la mirada de Yunho, que no permitía argumentos, le impedía hablar. Por alguna razón el otro joven quería pasar tiempo con él y  prefería comprarlo. A Jaejoong no le hubiera molestado que Yunho fuera en el día a visitarlo -al contrario, secretamente siempre esperaba verlo aparecer, pero sus deseos nunca se cumplían.
Así había ya pasado una semana, y Yunho no había fallado en venir cada noche.
“Jaejoong, ¿puedo pasar?” oyó la voz de su hermana Bora tras la puerta.
“Sí, pasa.”
La chica, de rasgos muy finos y femeninos entró a la habitación y se acercó al joven. “Joongie… ¿estás bien?” le dijo tomándole la mano. “Jonghyun está muy preocupado por tí. Dice que ya no duermes en su habitación y que estás muy distante.”
Jaejoong la miró con confusión y un poco de enojo. “Esta es mi habitación. Si quiero dormir en ella, ¿por qué es eso un problema?”
“No es un problema, pequeño. Es solo que de un día para otro cambiaste de idea y eso nos preocupa.” La chica hizo una pausa y luego continuó, “Hyun dice que tienes un cliente nuevo…”
Jaejoong de pronto se sintió muy molesto. ¿Desde cuando tenía que rendirle cuentas a alguien, como si fuera un niño?
“Mis clientes son mi asunto”, dijo el joven y luego calló, mirando intensamente a la chica.
“No te pongas a la defensiva, no fue mi intensión inmiscuirme. Pero sabes que estoy ahí para tí, ¿cierto? Si es que me necesitas...”
“Lo sé, lo sé” respondió Jaejoong calmándose un poco. “Te prometo que no pasa nada. Al menos nada malo”
Bora se quedó mirándolo un momento y luego sonrió, quedando un poco más tranquila y, después de unos segundos abandonó la habitación.
Jaejoong podía entender que su hermana se preocupara por él, ciertamente el haría lo mismo por ella, pero de alguna manera no quería involucrar a nadie más en su tema con Yunho. Sentía que si se guardaba sus interacciones para él mismo sería como poseer una parte de Yunho, y eso le gustaba.
Toda confusión o duda que hubiera habido en su cabeza o en su corazón sobre lo que sentía por el otro joven se había disipado. A pesar de nunca haberlo experimentado, sabía que estaba enamorado, que esto era amor. ¿Qué más podía ser? Al estar con Yunho sentía mil cosas a la vez, y siempre quería que esos momentos duraran por siempre. Y cada vez que Yunho le sonreía con esa sonrisa brillante y perfecta, sentía que le faltaba el aire.
Estaba enamorado. Sin explicación se había enamorado.
A veces sentía un poco decepcionado de que Yunho no recordara su primer encuentro. Él nunca lo olvidaría. El recuerdo de la voz grave del otro joven gimiendo su nombre era algo que nunca fallaba en subirle la temperatura al máximo. Con diecinueve años, no podía pedirle autocontrol a su cuerpo, no cuando el objeto de sus deseos venía a visitarlo todas las noches y se sentaba a centímetros de donde había yacido esa noche…
Y qué hablar de su imaginación. Luego de las primeras miles de veces que había repasado el recuerdo en su mente, su imaginación había empezado a modificar cosas sobre el recuerdo, hasta ya hacerse irreconocible, pero definitivamente disfrutable.
Mientras peinaba su cabello mirándose al espejo, imaginaba como sería tener a Yunho recostado en su futón, camisa a medio desabrochar y pantalones en el mismo estado, gimiendo su nombre por el placer que estaba recibiendo pero no de su mano, sino de los labios de Jaejoong.
Definitivamente tenía una vívida imaginación, pues casi podía sentir el salado sabor de los líquidos que brotaban de la punta de su miembro, o sentirlo pulsar contra su lengua.
Jaejoong suspiró, sexualmente frustrado con un bulto en su entrepierna y las mejillas rojas.
Frustración, eso era lo que más sentía, pues sabía que podía hacer sentir a Yunho en el paraíso. No valía la pena intentar ser humilde al respecto: sus habilidades en la cama ya habían sido testeadas con varias personas, y siempre resultaban satisfactorias. Estaba seguro de que si tan solo Yunho lo dejara…
Sin embargo estaba demasiado asustado de que todo terminara si hacía un movimiento incorrecto. Si tan solo Yunho le diera alguna señal…
Con otro suspiro terminó de peinarse y se alistó para comenzar las labores de la casa. Y ojalá no pensar tanto en Yunho. O al menos intentarlo.
--
Yunho siempre llegaba a la misma hora, ni un minuto más ni un minuto menos, y lo esperaba en el pasillo si aún no terminaba con su cliente, pero Jaejoong, sabiendo que Yunho estaba ahí, se apresuraba a despacharlos apenas acababan.
“Yunho…” lo saludó con una pequeña reverencia, como acostumbraba hacerlo. El otro joven rió.
“Jaejoong, ya te lo he dicho antes, ciertamente no soy una persona tan importante como para merecer semejante reverencia”
Jaejoong se ruborizó y le indicó que pasara.
Una vez adentro Yunho se acomodó en su lugar usual y, con ambas manos sobre sus piernas en una posición muy calmada, le sonrió al otro joven. Jaejoong inmediatamente sintió las mariposas en su estómago.
“¿Qué hay de nuevo?” le preguntó el mayor, educadamente ignorando el sonrojo de Jaejoong.
“Siempre me preguntas lo mismo, y lamento decirte que nunca pasa nada nuevo por aquí.”
Yunho nunca le preguntaba sobre sus clientes, ni Jaejoong le hablaba de ellos, pero algo le decía que si decidiera contarle algo Yunho escucharía atento, educadamente, como siempre lo hacía.
“Mi padre partió de vuelta a Seúl esta tarde con mi hermano. Vinieron para la boda, y sin boda…” Yunho aún se veía triste al hablar del hecho, y esto le partía el corazón a Jaejoong. El mayor buscó entre sus bolsillos de pronto, y sacó su teléfono móvil para dejarlo a su lado en el suelo. “Disculpa, mi hermano quedó de enviarme un mensaje cuando llegaran a casa, estoy esperando…”
“Claro, no hay problema. Tómate tu tiempo” Jaejoong lo miró mientras Yunho manipulaba su móvil, y no por primera vez se preguntó qué era tan especial sobre poseer uno de esos aparatos. Él nunca había visto la necesidad. Y bueno, no sabiendo leer, enviar o recibir mensajes de texto se complicaba bastante.
Miles de veces algún cliente le había pedido su número telefónico para mantenerse en contacto, y Jaejoong solo les contestaba que no tenía uno, y que si querían contactarlo podían llamar a la casa, a lo que los clientes le dedicaban una mirada extraña. Seguramente muchos creían que solo no quería darles su número. Ciertamente era extraño ver a un joven como él sin un teléfono móvil, o al menos eso era lo que la televisión le hacía creer. En un pueblo como el que habitaba, donde la mayoría de la población eran adultos mayores, la tecnología no era muy de punta.
“Listo. Ya llegaron a casa y van a cenar. Disculpa, guardaré esto ahora.”
“No, no es necesario. Es decir… si no es mucho pedir, ¿podría preguntar cómo se usa?”
Yunho se quedó mirándolo un momento como si no entendiera la pregunta; luego, viendo la mirada de Jaejoong hacia su teléfono, de repente comprendió. “¡Ah! ¿Esto? ¿Tu no tienes uno?”
Jaejoong negó con la cabeza, ruborizándose un poco, pero intentando lucir digno. “Nunca he visto la necesidad. Todas las personas que conozco viven aquí mismo, no necesito uno de esos aparatos para comunicarme con ellos.”
“Y ¿por qué el súbito interés?” Yunho le sonrió curioso.
“Bueno… me preguntaba qué tan útil es, cual es la gran maravilla.”
“Para mí es bastante útil. Puedo revisar mi email, contactarme con mis amigos de la universidad, mi familia, incluso si estoy lejos de ellos. Si tuvieras uno, por ejemplo, podríamos hablar incluso cuando no estemos juntos.”
Las mejillas de Jaejoong se tiñeron de rojo intenso, y susurró. “No podría usarlo, aunque tuviera uno…”
Yunho, a pesar del susurro del otro joven, alcanzó a escucharlo y se acercó un poco más a él para decir “¿Por qué no?”
Esto, sin duda, era algo que no quería que Yunho supiera, pero se sentía tan avergonzado que ninguna otra excusa se le venía a la mente. “Nunca aprendí a leer ni escribir…”
Por un momento pensó que Yunho no le hablaría más. Él, con tan buena educación, de familia de bien, ¿relacionándose con un prostituto que, además, no sabía ni leer ni escribir? Parecía un chiste. Jaejoong de pronto sintió mucha vergüenza de sí mismo, de quien era, y solo atinó a mirar el suelo, negándose a alzar la mirada.
“Disculpa, no fue mi intención… Fue maleducado de mi parte.” Luego de unos segundos, agregó. “¿Quieres aprender?”
Jaejoong levantó la mirada, no esperando esas palabras, y abrió la boc para decir algo, pero sin saber qué.
“Disculpa si es algo atrevido de mi parte. Solo pensé que podía ser algo en que pudiera ayudar. No soy profesor, pero al menos eso puedo enseñarte.”
Jaejoong se quedó callado un momento, sintiendo de pronto algo muy diferente por este joven, algo cálido y tierno. “Me gustaría mucho, si no es mucho problema para tí…”
“Claro que no, yo ofrecí después de todo.”
“Tengo solo una condición: que aceptes que las clases sean el pago por venir a verme.” dijo el joven con una sonrisa tímida.
Yunho le sonrió también, y extendió su mano. Jaejoong hizo lentamente lo mismo y con un apretón de manos cerraron el compromiso.
