Have you ever thought about how Harry wasted a huge opportunity when he dropped the Resurrection Stone in the Forbidden Forest?
Okay just imagine if he had kept it.
He dies, comes back, defeats Voldemort…
Only now there are over one-hundred people who have died in just The Battle of Hogwarts alone. Not to mention all of those names that were read on the radio throughout the year. (And everyone else who died before then.)
So the Golden Trio gets this idea…
They quickly spread the word and pretty soon, Harry sets up a room in Hogwarts with nothing in it but a desk and a chair. He sits in the chair behind the desk and calls people into the room one at a time.
Harry insists that the Weasleys be the first to enter. And so George walks in, puffy-eyed but smiling, and asks Harry what the big secret is.
Harry then plops an ordinary pebble into George’s hand.
George is very confused until he hears his name being whispered from behind him. George turns and of course there’s Fred. And the two twins are able to properly say goodbye to one another.
Harry then allows the entire Weasley family to come in and they all huddle around Fred’s spirit and are able to say goodbye. And of course Mrs. Weasley drags Harry out from behind the desk and he joins the family hug.
Are you crying yet?
Because I am.
But let’s keep going.
Mrs. Weasley’s hand brushes against the stone and Fabian and Gideon appear to say goodbye to their sister.
After the Weasleys finally leave, Harry brings Dennis in so that he can say goodbye to Colin.
Harry then individually brings in the family member(s) of the unnamed one-hundred students who died during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Harry then brings in Luna so that she can say goodbye to her mother.
He brings in pretty much all of Hogwarts so that they can say goodbye to Cedric.
He brings in Aberforth so that he can say goodbye to Albus and Ariana.
He brings in those who want to say goodbye to Snape.
He brings in Kreacher so that he can say goodbye to Regulus.
He brings in the rest of the house-elves so that they can say goodbye to Dobby.
And when Harry is done letting everyone else say goodbye to their loved ones, he closes his hand around the stone.
The first one to appear is a beautiful white owl who flies over to Harry and allows herself to be affectionately petted.
Then of course the others appear, just as they did in the Forbidden Forest on that fateful night. Harry doesn’t talk to them for too long, he’s grown up a lot since the Mirror of Erised, but he is able to make peace with his loved ones’ sacrifices.
And even then, he still keeps the stone.
He doesn’t use it again. Not personally, anyway. In fact, he stores it in a dusty box on the mantel in his house. He doesn’t use it. But he doesn’t forget it, either. Because he needs it for one last task.
And when the boy with the turquoise hair is old enough to understand, Harry gently sits him down and places a stone in his hand.
And Teddy Lupin meets Remus and Nymphadora.

Okay but the AU where Harry gets a snake instead?
Imagine if the snake curls up next to him in the cupboard and comforts a crying Harry by hissing, “I remember my old owner. He was just like you. Small and scared. His parents would yell at him too.”
“They’re not my parents,” Harry explains. “My parents d-died.”
The snake stares at him for a while before saying, “I see.”
They’re on the Hogwarts Express and the snake angrily hisses at Malfoy.
“My owner knew his father,” he hisses to Harry. “He was vile and cruel. He made my owner do terrible things.”
The snake drops a few other glimpses of backstory as the years pass. He’s the one who tells Harry that his father used to be a Quidditch player.
“My owner always told people that your father wasn’t that great; he’d then talk to me in the middle of the night, when nobody else could hear, whispering all of the plays that your father did and how great they were. I never cared much for it; snakes have no use for broomsticks and flying. It was nice to see how happy he was.”
“He liked Quidditch then? Your owner?”
“Oh, yes. I remember one time he took a Bludger to the stomach. He ended up going to the hospital wing. His brother broke into his dorm to get me. He knew that I would make him feel better.”
“S-sorry. Did you say he took a Bludger to the stomach?”
In the second year, he tells Harry that his owner was a descendant of Slytherin and that he was still extremely brave and extremely kind.
During Potions Class one day, everyone talks about how Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. Malfoy sneers that he even has a pet snake. Snape freezes before turning away. He knew another boy with a pet snake.
In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry nervously asks the snake, “How well did you know Sirius Black?”
“Well,” the snake replies.
He doesn’t say anything else on the matter.
Harry brings the snake along to Lupin’s office one day (the cat makes him nervous). Lupin nearly faints upon seeing him and when Harry assures him that he’s not dangerous, Lupin quickly says, “N-no, I know. It’s just…it’s funny…he looks so much like…well…he can’t be, now, can he? …Can he?”
At the end of Goblet of Fire, Harry tells the snake that Voldemort is returned, causing his whole slithering body to shudder.
“Then it didn’t matter,” he hisses. “His sacrifice didn’t matter in the end.”
“Who, Cedric?” Harry says miserably. “His sacrifice mattered.”
“No,” says the snake. “I didn’t mean him.”
Harry is confused but doesn’t press it.
Besides, he was used to being confused.
Like when he entered the narrow corridor of 12 Grimmauld Place and the snake excitedly hissed that he was home. Or when Sirius saw the snake and immediately teared up. Or when Kreacher saw him and burst into tears.
Harry didn’t understand but that was okay. He still loved the snake profusely, despite the confusion that surrounded him.
And perhaps it would have given a trembling eighteen-year-old some comfort to know that when he left his snake at the pet shop in Diagon Alley, pulling him from the locket that hung on his neck, he was going to end up in good hands.
Indeed, I think it would have given him a tremendous amount of comfort.
And of course, since this is an AU, I’d like to imagine that the snake would have survived the flight to the Burrow in the seventh book.
But even if he hadn’t, he would have had another loving owner waiting for him.
He would have been okay.

Sad but so beautiful.
“Do you know what it’s like to be named for the dead?” James asks his father in the middle of one of many arguments. “Do I remind you of a man we’ve never met? Am I in honor of someone you watched die? Because I don’t want it.” When James Sirius Potter looks at himself in the mirror, he sees a mess of reddish brown curls and slightly askew glasses and freckles everywhere. He sees hands that climb trees and grip tightly to broomsticks. He sees his mother’s smile and hears his father’s voice. Because James seems like the thick goofball of the family, but he reads history book after history book, wishing to never repeat the sins of their fathers. If he saw any of James Potter he wouldn’t recognize him at all, and maybe, he fears, that’s where he falls short.
“Do you know what it’s like to be named for the dead,” Albus says one day to Rose as they sit by the Great Lake. “Names of men who I think aren’t the heroes I’ve been told about. Men I’m told are brave but seem just as bad as the rest.” Albus Severus Potter loves being called Al and having his hair ruffled by his friends. He loves sitting on high ledges and looking out at the vast sky and thinking about what is on the other side of the earth. Albus Potter sticks his nose in old books and keeps to himself and has no desire for greatness in any form. He doesn’t want to lead a war or be a spy. He wants to be Al and bake with his grandmother on Sundays and give his sister piggyback rides. And, most days, that feels like admitting failure.
“Do you know what it’s like to be named for the dead,” Lily shouts one day with tears in her eyes. “I’m not her, I’m not her, I’m not her,” she repeats over and over again. Because Lily Luna Potter is a Slytherin and brutal and fierce and full of fire and made of stone. She is not soft and kind - she is not the woman who saved her child from death. Because she can be selfish and harsh and unforgiving. She spends her mornings running through the icy, frozen woods and her nights leaning over windowsills because the rush is just right.  Lily Potter will fight to the death, but for no one but herself. And does that make her somehow distorted, she wonders as she flips through photo after photo of a young woman with pretty eyes she doesn’t have and gentle hands that she will never understand.
“Do you know what it’s like to be named for the dead?” Fred chokes through sobs as he rushes past his mother. “Do you have any idea what it’s like to be named for someone who haunts us every day and every night? Can you imagine being named for someone you can never look like because of your skin?” Because Fred Weasley ties up his wild dark hair into a thick ponytail when it’s time to play Quidditch and sees deep brown eyes when he looks at his reflection. Because Fred is dark skinned like his mother and will never look like his namesake, and is he resented for that? Is it worse to look like the brother that his father lost or to not resemble someone he loved at all? Because, most days, Fred is already different than the rest of his cousins and friends. Fred loves to laugh and play the highest caliber of pranks, because Fred is a Weasley…but that is something that no one can physically see, and that’s what’s the most terrifying.
“I know what it’s like to be named for the dead,” Teddy tells them all at some point, his hands on their shoulders or pulling them into a tight hug. “I know what it’s like to remind the person you love of all who they’ve lost. How much it hurts.” Because Teddy Lupin is named for a man who was killed alone and frightened in the woods over twenty years ago. He is his mother when he decides he likes the color pink and his father when his eyes morph into an almond amber. Because he is an orphan and no different from Harry…and he can understand how their father feels, because he wishes to honor those who died for him, too. Because he knows he is nothing like Ted Tonks, and yet his name carries a piece of his grandfather with him and that’s why Grandmother can only call him “Teddy,” otherwise she’d burst into tears. Because Teddy Lupin lives in between Harry and George and their children - born into war and only knowing peace. And so Teddy understands exactly what it is to be named for the dead, and knows exactly why it is so important to do so.
And even as he tries to tell them all this, he feels hot tears running down his cheeks and wonders to his parents, who have never been there, “Do you know what it is to be named for the dead?”
