The Barbie movie hits you in waves
A lot of us have been that girl who comes to hate Barbie, and like America there comes a point where you see the faults but love the idea of Barbie and what she can be but also despair because no it's not that easy its a dream Barbieland is a dreamland and is it not enough to just be nothing more than ordinary because sometimes thats enough.
But sometimes it isn't. Sometimes that isn't enough and the world is set up to hold you back and Barbieland is a dreamland like you childhood but as soon as you hit adulthood that dreamland falls apart and it hurts like hell. Change hurts like hell and its devestating fighting for what is right and the Kens deserve better just like women deserve better and that happens slowly and that is frustrating and its not a happy ending but its not a sad ending because life isn't fully sad or happy and it doesn't end because there will always be another little girl

Househusband AU: Headcanon 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
masterlist
a/n: I swear I have drafts written that are unrelated to househusbands AU, but I can’t get this AU out of my head 😭. Hopefully, I can get back to writing prompts soon, but here’s some more HCs (got carried away with writing, so it’s longer than I intended…oh well!)
Tumblr media
Who’s the most romantic?
💍 Bret, most definitely. He usually goes the extra mile to show Shawn how much he cares about him. He’s really good at planning date nights and remembering the little things, often gifting Shawn sentimental and thoughtful gifts relating to something Shawn may have mentioned to him prior
💍 Bret sometimes surprises Shawn with secret outings, nothing too extravagant. It’s typically something as simple as driving to the countryside, walking hand in hand along a trail as they talk about whatever’s on their mind, simply enjoying each other’s presence
💍 Shawn swears the number of times his heart melts has to be at least three times a day
💍 Shawn’s favorite moment has to be when Bret took care of him when he was ill one week
“Shawn, wake up. Babe, you’ve gotta eat”
“Come on, let’s get up and brush your teeth”
“Let’s put on some clothes so I can take you to the doctor, ok?”
💍 It was sweet more than romantic, but it warmed Shawn’s heart every time Bret doted on him
💍 Bret thinks Shawn’s pretty romantic as well, though Shawn would beg to differ. It’s not in the traditional sense of candle-lit dinners or chocolate and roses for Valentines Day. But it was in Shawn’s way – learning how to cook Bret’s favorite childhood meal, making a bracelet for Bret from scratch, and attempting to draw a portrait of Bret for Valentines Day (and failing miserably)
💍Bret appreciates anything Shawn does for him
 Who’s more emotional?
💍 Shawn, and he knows it. He has no shame about it. He’s pretty sure it stems from him being the baby of the family (and he may or may not have been spoiled by his mom as a child)
💍 Bret’s childhood was pretty rough compared to Shawn’s. Being raised in a house with 11 siblings oftentimes felt like a warzone. It also didn’t help that his dad had a bad temper and was really tough on the boys
💍 Bret had learned at a young age that it was best to keep his thoughts and emotions to himself, especially when a few of his siblings would make fun of him for crying. Or the time one of his siblings told his dad something Bret had told them in confidence, with the goal of getting him in trouble
💍 So he was kind of taught to hide his emotions
💍 Shawn’s seen Bret cry only a handful of times, but Bret’s gotten better at expressing his emotions to Shawn. Shawn always makes it a point to ask Bret how he feels about things, whether it’s a tough decision or something as simple as Bret’s thoughts on a movie they’d watched. He wants Bret to know his feelings, opinions, and emotions are valid and that he would always be there to listen
What facial features do they like the most?
💍 Easily for Bret, it’s Shawn’s blue eyes. They were just too pretty not to gawk at
💍 For Shawn, it’s Bret’s eyes as well. People always talk about Shawn’s eyes, but Shawn often finds himself getting lost in Bret’s hazel eyes
💍 Shawn also loves Bret’s smile. He loves that he’s one of few people Bret genuinely smiles for, and it showcases those adorable dimples. Bret has to reiterate to Shawn that he in fact does not have dimples, just deep smile lines. But Shawn’s convinced that it’s dimples and nothing’s changing his mind
 What are their friendship dynamics?
💍 Shawn’s the closest with Hunter, of course. He considers him as his brother more than a friend. Hunter’s family accepted long ago that Shawn was part of their family. And the same goes for Shawn’s family to Hunter. Shawn has no idea where he’d be without Hunter in his life
💍 Aside from Hunter, Shawn’s closest friend is Kevin, much to Bret’s dismay. Neither man could explain it, but they just got along so well. There was never a dull or awkward moment between the two despite the fact that they had a brief fling when they first met
💍 Kevin does still find Shawn attractive, though. Who wouldn’t? And if Shawn were to come onto him one day, he’s not confident he’d exactly tell him to stop. Not that he wants that to happen though, contrary to Bret’s belief. Despite Bret’s tension with Shawn’s friends, everyone in the kliq hopes things work out between Shawn and Bret because they know Shawn would be devastated otherwise, and they’d be left to clean up the mess
💍 After getting to know Goldust, Shawn considers him a close friend of his. He loves whenever Goldust makes the trip to Calgary to keep him company. The two also hang out backstage whenever they’re on the road at the same time with their significant others. It feels nice to talk to someone else who could relate to being a husband, married to a wrestler, and living such a crazy lifestyle. Plus, Goldust always has great gossip to share
💍 Bret’s relationship with Shawn’s friend group is complicated. He doesn’t have a problem with Sean. He actually finds his company quite enjoyable. Hunter? He was forced to tolerate. And Kevin and Scott? He’d rather not be anywhere near them. He’s met a few of Shawn’s hometown friends, and they were more a lot more pleasant to be around
💍 Out of all of Bret’s friends, Shawn gets along with Steve Austin the most. They met backstage one night at a house show. Shawn was bored with no one to talk to – Hunter wasn’t on the program that night and Bret was busy most of the night. Shawn had been getting antsy, ready to go back to the hotel with Bret. He was pacing the hallway backstage when he bumped into Steve, desperately asking “hey, do you know where I can find a beer around here? Budweiser?” to which Steve responded with a grin “no, but I know where you can get a Steveweiser” and the rest was history. While waiting for Bret, Shawn hung out in Steve’s locker room. The two quickly clicked, both relating to being beer-loving southern Texans with attitude
💍 Bret found the pair odd at first, caught off guard one day when Shawn entered his locker room saying “Hey, I’m going to go hang out with Steve tonight. Wanna come?” Shawn usually did leave Bret at night to hang out with the kliq, but not Bret’s own friends. He didn’t join Shawn that night, but when one night turned to two nights, which turned to the Texans hanging out that whole week, Bret had to see what the hype was about
💍 He joined them one night, and it wasn’t much. The night consisted of the blond in Steve’s room, drinking beer, playing cards, talking about whatever, but Bret could barely keep up with the conversation. It seemed like Shawn’s southern drawl deepened around Steve, and their Texas lingo left Bret feeling like they were speaking a different language
💍 As odd as he found it, he was relieved that Shawn found someone to hang with that wasn’t the kliq. Although Bret was weary of the drinking, Steve was a whole lot better of company and more responsible than Shawn’s friends. He trusted that the man would look after Shawn
How well do they get along with each other?
💍 Their relationship is pretty healthy. Bret considers Shawn as his best friend and Shawn the same (aside from Hunter, of course). There are no secrets between them. They tell each other everything, even if it hurts the other person. They both agreed early on in their relationship that its best to be honest and upfront with each other
💍 They don’t fight often. It’s more of light bickering or small disagreements between them, but it’s not usually anything that’ll cause alarm. There were a few times Shawn picked fights with Bret in the early stages of their marriage when Bret was away on the road, especially when Bret didn’t call him. Shawn was still getting adjusted to being a househusband and not having Bret around, so his decisions weren’t the wisest around that time. But he’s grown from that, especially as their trust in each other built over the years
💍 They have really great communication with each other. Unless Shawn’s really pissed, in which case Bret knows he must have really fucked up because Shawn gets really quiet when he’s upset. Bret would rather have the man yelling at him than ignoring him, not knowing what Shawn’s thinking
💍 Both have their flaws but they both equally put in the effort to make their marriage work
How well do they get along with each other’s family?
💍 It took some time for Shawn’s family to come around to Bret. Shawn’s mom and sister loved him instantly. It was hard not to with how charming, polite, and sweet Bret was.
💍 Shawn’s brothers were a little skeptical at first (who’s this guy wooing our little brother?) but they were still welcoming. Shawn’s dad, on the other hand, was the wild card. He was very weary of Bret, wondering how someone who’s on the road all year could have a successful and faithful relationship with his son. To him, actions spoke louder than words, so he kept a watchful eye on the two. It took a few years and a few awkward family dinners, but Shawn’s dad did eventually accept Bret into the family
💍 Bret’s family was a bit more welcoming of Shawn. Shawn didn’t know what to expect when meeting the Harts, but Bret’s parents were so kind to him. Shawn’s very close to Bret’s parents. With his own parents being so far away in Texas, Helen and Stu were his home away from home. He calls Helen ‘mama Hart’ and Stu ‘papa Hart.’ It was originally ‘daddy Hart, but Bret expressed to Shawn how uncomfortable it was for him to hear Shawn call his dad ‘daddy’. Shawn’s undoubtedly their favorite son-in-law
💍 Shawn was loved by most of Bret’s siblings, which is already an accomplishment within itself. And of course Shawn’s favorite Hart sibling is Owen who loved Shawn almost as much as Bret. However, with there being so many siblings, there was bound to be a few Shawn wasn’t too fond of. Bruce and Elizabeth were the main ones that came to mind
💍 Shawn had a verbal spat with Elizabeth once, the blond man taking up for Bret when Elizabeth started throwing low blows Bret’s way in an argument, such as discrediting his wrestling ability or commenting on how she didn’t see what Shawn saw in Bret. Bret had to hide the proud smile on his face at how Shawn didn’t back down and wasn’t afraid to go toe-to-toe with her
💍 However, that was nothing compared to Shawn’s issue with Bruce who’d called Shawn a gold digger at a family dinner. It became a whole thing: Shawn freezing at the word, truly shocked that he would be accused of that, Bret taking up for Shawn, Bret and Bruce almost getting into a fist fight, Shawn having to hold Bret back and guide him outside towards their car, Bret threatening to never come around again if that’s how they’re going to treat Shawn. Bret’s parents begged them to stay, but the night was already ruined, and Bret just wanted to get Shawn away from the situation
💍 Family gatherings are still a little awkward, but there’s not nearly as much tension now that years have gone by since the incident
💍 Shawn’s saving grace has been his close relationship with the other in-laws: Jim, Davey, and Martha. He felt like they had their own support group, there for each other when the Hart family got wild
 Thoughts on kids?
💍 Shawn’s really great with kids, but they’ve both agreed that they don’t desire to have children of their own. They have plenty enough nieces and nephews to keep them busy
💍 After getting married, they felt the pressure from Bret’s family. They were constantly getting asked about their thoughts on adoption or if they considered getting a surrogate. It even got to the point of Bret’s mom saying she knew a girl who’d carry their baby….weird
💍 Everyone eventually backed off once it was evident that the couple wasn’t going to budge. They were perfectly happy just having each other
💍 Besides, tending to their flower garden and watching their flowers grow was like raising kids in Shawn’s opinion
 Any tattoos/piercings?
💍 Shawn has two lobe piercings in his left ear and one on his right. And he also has a belly button piercing (both his and Bret’s favorite)
💍 Shawn has multiple tattoos including: the state of Texas on his calf, a Canadian leaf on his thigh, a heart with a dagger on his arm, a wedding band with the letter B in the middle on his ring finger, and Bret’s favorite, a heart on his ass cheek
💍 His most recent tattoo was the one he got on their first-year wedding anniversary. It was a tattoo on his rib of Bret’s name in cursive with the hitman logo to the right of it. Hunter argued up and down with Shawn to not get someone’s name tatted on him. It’s the cardinal rule! But Shawn didn’t care. He loved this man and had no doubts they’d be together forever
💍 A little-known fact is that Bret’s afraid of needles, which is one of the reasons why he went the longest time without having any tattoos or piercings. He did eventually get a matching tattoo with Shawn, getting the same wedding band tattoo on his ring finger, but with an S in the middle instead
💍 Shawn held Bret’s other hand the whole time, allowing Bret to squeeze his hand whenever the pain became too much. Bret’s love for Shawn grew tenfold that day
 Any pet peeves?
💍 Shawn hates when Bret doesn’t tell him ahead of time that they have guests coming over. Shawn usually walks around the house with as little clothes as possible, whether it’s him walking around shirtless or wearing a silk robe with nothing underneath. Bret was lectured by Shawn to give him ample warning after a particularly embarrassing moment when Owen and Martha showed up unannounced, rounding the corner into the living room to see Shawn only wearing his favorite booty shorts, which were so tight they left nothing to the imagination
💍 Shawn calls Bret ‘Bretford’ or ‘Sergeant’ when being a smart ass. Bretford’s not even his real name, but Bret finds it entertaining when Shawn says it. However, he does not find being called Sergeant entertaining. Shawn usually says it when he’s pissed or feels like Bret’s bossing him around, insinuating that Bret’s treating him like a drill sergeant. Whenever he tells Shawn to stop, Shawn just innocently says “What? It’s your name, right?” and that always grinds his gears
💍 Bret also hates when Shawn walks away from arguments. It’s not like Shawn’s one to run from an argument. Lord knows he’s argued with Hunter more than enough. But he knows how he gets when he’s heated. When it comes to Bret, he doesn’t want to say something he’ll regret
 Insecurities?
💍 For both of them, age is an insecurity, but for different reasons. For Shawn, he wonders if he’s mature enough to be with Bret. Although he’s definitely grown as a person since being married, he still has issues with his attitude. His patience isn’t as great as Bret’s, sometimes leading to him snapping at the man. His biggest fear is Bret getting fed up with him one day and leaving
💍 For Bret, sometimes his mind drifts to if Shawn finds him boring, if he’d be happier with someone his own age. Shawn’s friends are pretty wild and Bret’s nothing like them. But Shawn promptly reminds him that there’s nothing out there better for him. “I’ve dated men my own age, Bret. And look where it led me…to you”
💍 Bret’s sexuality has also caused self-doubt in Shawn. While Shawn’s strictly dickly, Bret identifies as bisexual. Shawn sometimes wonders if Bret would ever chase after the traditional life and leave him for a woman. It was silly, really. But when he’s left all alone in an empty mansion for months at a time, it’s easy for his thoughts to run wild. Bret eases Shawn when he tells him that if the traditional life doesn’t include him, then he doesn’t want it
💍 Money has also been a topic of discussion. Shawn isn’t a materialistic person, but Bret introduced him to the finer things of life (expensive watches, necklaces, earrings, rings, etc.). He appreciates it, but he wants to be able to do the same for Bret. The couple shares a bank account, but it’s mostly Bret’s money. Bret tells Shawn he can buy whatever he wants with it. “What’s mine is yours.” But Shawn still wrestles with the fact that he’s not contributing financially to the marriage
💍 In the beginning stages of dating, Shawn was insecure about his body hair. He’d never been self-conscious about it before until he started dating Bret, noting how well-groomed the older man was. He wondered if he should make more of an effort to be hairless, but it was more work than he was willing to put in
💍 He’d gotten a full body wax once…sort of. He was too embarrassed to go to a professional. So, unfortunately for Hunter, Shawn enlisted the help of his best friend who wished he could wipe his memory of the experience.
“I’m not going anywhere near your dick!”
“Oh don’t act like you haven’t seen it before. Now help me wax my legs!”
💍 Hunter was still traumatized
💍 Fortunately for Shawn, and inadvertently Hunter, that was the first and last time he had to go through that experience. When Bret seemed indifferent to Shawn waxing, noting that he didn’t have a preference on the blond’s body hair, Shawn felt instant relief, “Oh, thank god. I feel like a naked mole rat!”
 Extras
💍 Shawn’s very protective of Bret. Everyone sees Bret as this big tough guy with no emotions, but Shawn knows Bret’s really a softie. He’s a very sweet, sentimental guy and tends to take things to heart more than the average person. Shawn coddles him, Hunter sometimes having to remind Shawn, “he’s a grown ass man, not a baby” whenever Shawn freaks out over Bret getting the slightest scrape from wrestling. Bret must be protected at all costs
💍 It still baffles Bret how much of his life he spent without Shawn being in it. Saying he depends on Shawn for survival wouldn’t be an exaggeration. Shawn reminds Bret to eat, remembers appointments, makes sure bills are paid on time. You name it. Plus, he’s a great cuddler. Bret’s dubbed Shawn as his support human
💍 Bret’s really talented at drawing, and he often uses Shawn as his muse. Shawn loves laying on the couch, sprawled out like Rose from Titanic as Bret draws whatever his heart desires. Bret repeatedly has to tell Shawn to sit still, the younger man incapable of staying in one position for more than a minute
💍 Shawn has a binder full of Bret’s art, most of it consisting of portraits of himself. Hunter called him conceited for it, but it’s not Shawn’s fault that he’s the inspiration for most of Bret’s drawings
💍 Although Shawn’s a country boy, he’s a total disco queen. More often than not, Bret would return home to Shawn blasting classic 70’s and 80’s disco throughout the house, unashamedly gyrating his hips to the beat. Abba, The Bee Gees, and Earth Wind & Fire were stuck on repeat
💍 There was a point in the beginning stages of their relationship where they almost broke up due to Shawn’s drug use. The last time he used heavily was in college. However, he picked it up again and it slowly became a normal part of his routine whenever he hung out with the kliq, taking an unknown amount of somas or whatever was being offered at the time. Bret quickly became concerned when Shawn would come stumbling into his hotel room, clinging onto Hunter as he guided him to the bed, so incoherent that it was impossible for Bret to have a conversation with him. When it became a frequent occurrence, Bret adamantly told Shawn he needed to stop, to which the blond agreed. But it didn’t last long. It never did
💍 However, the final straw came when Shawn got so fucked up to the point of needing to be rushed to the hospital. Bret gave Shawn an ultimatum: either cut it out or they were done. He wasn’t going to sit by and watch Shawn ruin his life, especially when the blond was not making any efforts to better himself. It wasn’t a tough decision for Shawn. Just the thought of Bret leaving him shattered his heart. He wasn’t about to ruin what he was building with Bret. He’s never touched drugs ever since. Alcohol was another story, but Bret would rather deal with that than Shawn’s reckless drug use
💍 Shawn’s invite to the Slammy’s as Bret’s plus one was a huge deal.  Only their close friends and family knew of their relationship. Shawn was worried, asking Bret if them showing up together would be too obvious. “Well, maybe it’s time to make it obvious” was Bret’s reply
💍 Owen’s their unofficial marriage counselor, both men often venting to him about their light annoyances. For Bret, it was usually him complaining about how annoying Shawn’s friends were. He couldn’t exactly complain to Shawn about that as the younger man always took up for them. For Shawn, it was whenever he was frustrated with Bret and needed to be reminded that not all Harts were insufferable. Owen tries hard to act as a neutral party, but there are times where he picks sides, and more often than not he sides with Shawn, oop 🫢
💍 Bret likes playing in Shawn’s hair. Whether it’s running his hands through the soft blond hair or attempting (and failing) to put it in a ponytail. Shawn let’s him do whatever style he wants, just loving the attention Bret gives him

Week 8: Robots and Morocco
This week, I went on my long-awaited trip to Morocco! But first, Robots.
As a STEM student and a sci-fi enthusiast, there was no way I was going to be able to leave Madrid without visiting the robot museum. Located in a mall, the museum was a small collection of robots throughout popular culture. I had never been to the neighborhood where the museum was before, and as soon as I exited the metro station, I seriously felt like I was in a different city. The museum is in a neighborhood east of the center called Salamanca, and it was probably the most upscale part of Madrid I have been in so far. Gran Vía with all its stores, didn’t even come close. It was cool to look around that part of the city, and I definitely want to come back to walk around more and maybe grab a cup of coffee.
In the museum, we saw some of the first robots used in sci-fi movies. They were human-sized to allow people to stand inside and control them, since they didn’t have CGI or VFX back then. They also had a pretty big display of dancing and singing robots throughout history, like Pepper, the white humanoid robot below. We also saw reproductions of robots in popular films, like Star Wars and Iron Man.
Tumblr media
Some of my favorite robots we saw were PLEO, the Honda Asimo replica, and a completely open-source robot that can be built at home with a 3D printer!
Tumblr media
PLEO is kind of like a physical Tamagotchi- it needs you to take care of it, it gets hungry, angry, etc., and you can feed it food. Something interesting is that the original versions of PLEO were able to “die,” meaning they would turn off and not have a way to power on again. But, it also cost hundreds of dollars, and buyers were quick to complain about an expensive toy that could be rendered useless in a few months. So, they decided to allow it to power back on for future generations.
The Honda Asimo is a humanoid robot released in 2000. More than the picture below, I highly recommend clicking this and at least watching a few seconds of the robot (I recommend the 2:00 timestamp). When I saw it, I couldn’t believe the first version was unveiled in 2000! It can do so many cool things and definitely felt ahead of its time.
This robot was my favorite. Created by InMoov (click for another video) . It’s an open source 3D printed robot that can be printed by anyone! I thought it was an amazing idea to create a robot that can be made in such an accessible way. Something like this, even on a smaller scale, would be awesome to get people excited about robotics and engineering from the comfort of their own home. I know I would definitely love creating something like this in my free time!
Overall, I really enjoyed the museum and it was a great way to spend a couple hours in the city after school.
Now, onto the big one of this week: Morocco!!! Since it was such an influential trip, I’ll be describing it a little more in detail, but if you want to just look at the pictures of places and read my thoughts, skip over the parts highlighted in blue.
I knew before even coming to Madrid that I wouldn’t let myself go back to the US without visiting Morocco. It’s seriously so close! With it being just a 2 hour flight, I swear it took longer in the Morocco airport going through all the checks than it did to actually fly there (more on this later).
This was the first trip I’ve taken that was through another company who planned it all, and it was really nice to not have to really think about the itinerary. There were about 70 people, which also made it a lot of fun to meet everyone throughout the trip. This was also my first time in Africa, so I was really excited to see what the people, food, culture, etc. was like. Landing and driving into Marrakech, it was immediately clear why Marrakech is called “The Red City.” All the houses, buildings, walls of the old city, are this vivid terracotta red color. We landed in the morning, so we immediately started going around Marrakech to knock out a lot of the main sights before we started our trip into the Sahara desert the next morning. Walking around, I was reminded a lot of my trips to India. The biggest similarities were the people all over the streets, the honking, and the lack of crosswalks. To cross, you kinda just had to walk and not stop until you reached the other side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We walked through the city to first visit the Jardin Majorelle, a garden designed by a French painter which actually ended up making him more famous than his paintings. It was absolutely gorgeous, and I could see the amount of thought that went into designing the buildings, fountains, ponds, and the meticulous planning of where and how each flower and plant was planted. It was clear that every choice was intentional, and I definitely understand why he became famous for this garden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, we stopped by the Secret Garden, a quiet oasis in the middle of the otherwise bustling Medina. It seemingly appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the city, and was such a beautiful place to see. Throughout the garden, there were small canals of water flowing to cool down the garden in the summer, and they had little explanations of how the flow was constructed which I definitely nerded out about.
Tumblr media
Our next stop was the Bahia Palace, where we saw the traditional Moroccan tiling and colors decorating the palace. It was massive, and was such a beautiful place to sit and take in the atmosphere. Walking through this palace, I recognized just how much of Spanish architecture borrows from the islamic architecture of Morocco. More in the south of Spain, but still apparent in other places, the patterned tiling and floral detailing was clearly influenced by Moroccan architecture. Even in Madrid souvenir shops around the city, you can see tiles being sold with colorful geometric patterns, and I learned that those patterns are actually Moroccan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our last stop was the Saadian Tombs, where we saw tombs housed in an elaborately carved white stone building.
Tumblr media
The next morning, we started our journey into the desert. We split the journey into two days, stopping by Ait Benhaddou, an old clay city that’s a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is where a ton of movies were filmed, including Game of Thrones and Gladiator. In fact, when we visited, we couldn’t really go all the way up since they were filming Outer Banks Season 4. I learned that until recently, the village didn’t have any electricity, and currently, the only form of current electricity comes from solar panels. Most of the residents have since moved out, but there are surprisingly still some people who live there. It really was a place unlike any I’ve ever been to! We then spent the night in the Rose valley before continuing on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, we stopped at the Todgha Gorge, a huge rock formation. It was so beautiful to walk through with the sun hitting it just right in the morning light. Then, we dressed in traditional Berber attire, learning a little bit about the Berber culture. Something interesting about Morocco is that they actually have three main languages: Berber, Arabic, and French. Berbers are the people who lived in Northern Africa before Arabic influence, and Morocco was under French rule for a while, so that’s where the language influences come from. It was interesting to learn that their everyday language included words from all three languages, resulting in a dialect called Darija. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of English people spoke, but I think one change from studying abroad is that I tried to pick up a few common words in Arabic like thank you, hello, please, and use them whenever I can. Before studying abroad in Madrid where I had to use Spanish, I probably wouldn’t have tried to make an effort. But, recognizing how much local people appreciate it when you try from my experiences here, I decided to try, and I think I will continue to do that whenever I can.
Tumblr media
As soon as we reached the desert, the first thing we did was ride ATVs. It was my first time driving an ATV, and it was so much fun! One time, a bunch of us got stuck on an uphill, and a local boy, not more than 6 years old, masterfully got us out of the sand. I was really impressed, and it made me think about what it might be like to grow up in the area. Definitely different from anything I’m used to, but judging by the big smile on his face and his pro driving skills, even more adventurous and carefree.
Tumblr media
Then, we took a camel into the middle of the Sahara to stay the night. Weirdly enough, it was my second time on a camel, but I have still never ridden a horse. We then sandboarded a little before heading to our tents. We stayed at a little camp with tents that were more like “Glamping.” The camp had a firewall to block all data signals, so it was a completely disconnected evening. That night, we had a little bonfire party with traditional Berber dancing and music, as well as a DJ who played some of the more familiar music. It was really fun to be out in the desert among the stars, surrounded by the vastness of the dunes. The Sahara is just so beautiful with its reddish desert sand. Sitting on the top of a sand dune and peering out into the distance was such a relaxing feeling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next morning, we headed back out to Marrakech on a long 13 hour drive, which put us into Marrakech around 10pm. We made a few scenic stops along the way. At one of our many rest stops, we stopped at a place that made Argan oil by hand, peeling the nuts and using a stone grinder to produce the oil. As a regular buyer of the Moroccan Argan Oil from Trader Joes, it was super cool to see how it was made traditionally. By the end of the drive, I was so happy to be out of a bus and off the road.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, we were given a tour of the markets, Jemaa el-Fna, and we went inside a local pharmacy that explained about herbs and other natural remedies used in Moroccan culture. It was interesting to recognize that a lot of the natural remedies we learned about were things my parents had given me growing up. Like cumin for stomach aches, for example.
Tumblr media
One thing I recommend trying if you ever visit Morocco is embracing the local cuisine by trying things like couscous, tagine (pictured below), and Moroccan mint tea. It’s quite different from other foods I’ve tried, and they’re pretty good, so even if it doesn’t look like it’s something you might like, I’d still recommend going out of your comfort zone a little to give it a little taste!
Tumblr media
Now, about the airport. First, there was a line for security before even entering the airport. Then, I had to go to the desk with a piece of paper to get a stamp on it to validate it as my boarding pass. The most surprising part was that to check in, they had a paper list of all the passengers with their seats on a chart and they manually checked it off with a pen. I had never seen that in any airport before! Then, there was another line for actual airport security, then passport check, then another to check the passport check, and then finally, for boarding. And these lines took their own sweet time. So you could imagine how it took two hours to get through everything. Pro tip: get there 2-3 hours before your flight for a stress free experience.
Reflecting on my time in Marrakech walking through the streets and around the market , I felt like the chaos and “danger” of it all is a little overplayed by the "Western World". I’ve heard multiple times that the amount of people in the Medina, the old city, can be chaotic and overwhelming, and to watch out everywhere for people trying to sell you things and scam you. But to be honest, I think if you’re just basic city smart, it isn’t as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, it’s not going to be as comfortable as the United States, or Europe, or other countries in the “Western World”, but I definitely don’t think it’s anything to be afraid of. In fact, I’d say embrace the freedom of being able to cross the street whenever, because you can trust that the people that drive in Marrakesh are pros in their own streets. Embrace the hustle and bustle of people everywhere: take some time to eat in one of the main squares and just observe how many people make their livelihoods in the city. Embrace the people on the street if they approach you to buy something: politely say no, and understand that tourism is Morocco’s largest income. So it’s really just an everyday hustle too. While this may seem like an overly positive view, I feel like if you go into situations like those with that kind of mindset, there'll be nothing to worry about.
Overall, I absolutely loved this trip and would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. Thanks for sticking around for this longer post :)

P.S. I know, I’m pretty behind on my drawings… life’s picking up a bit, and I’m reminded of why I usually don’t crank out a drawing a week in my normal life. I can’t promise anything, but since this was a New Year’s resolution, I’m doing my best to catch up.

"You did not just ask me that."
Ethan didn't even seem bothered by your shocked reaction. Instead, he simply kept looking at you, waiting, as if he had posed a completely normal question. You were certain it wasn’t though - who the hell just came out and asked one of their best friends to start hooking up? Surely this wasn’t just you thinking this was more than odd. You couldn’t stop looking at him, relaxing on a lounger in the sun, book still open in his hand, and how he didn’t seem to care.
“Oh, come one, Y/n,” Vic interjected from where she was relaxing on a pool float. “Poor Ethan hasn’t been with anyone since the pandemic started. The least you can do is help him get laid.”
“Get laid by me?!”
“Who else?” Victoria laughed. “It’s not like he can go out and pick up someone when we go on a promo tour in a week. We’re barely allowed to meet anyone as a safety measure.”
You shot her a pointed look and Victoria being your friend for the longest got it immediately.
“And no, I’m not gonna hook up with him. So it’s gotta be you.”
You couldn’t believe the conversation you were having. Had everyone simply gone crazy? Surely, Thomas wouldn’t be on their side in this, right? You watched as he lazily strolled towards your loungers, cigarette in hand.
“Thomas!” You shouted over at him. “Ethan wants me to hook up with him!”
“Fucking finally,” Thomas laughed as you stared back in horror. Was everyone in on this madness? “He’s been moping around for ages. About time he gets laid and relaxes.”
“See?” Ethan interjected. “Everyone thinks it’s a good idea.”
“I don’t think it’s a good idea!”
“Fine,” Ethan shrugged. You hated how much he didn’t seem to care - how he had posed a question like that without an ounce of awkwardness and how your rejection didn’t seem to faze him in the least. You knew he was open about sex and sexuality, you’d been part of countless conversations among the band and had seen him pick up people at parties more than once, but this unnerved you. "If you change your mind, I'm available."
And with that Ethan went back to his book, Victoria went back to floating around the pool and Thomas went back to smoking his cigarette. But you weren't going to go back to anything, because whether you liked it or not, Ethan's suggestion would continue playing in your head for the unforeseeable future.
***
Three days. It had been three days since that fateful day at the pool and you could barely stand to look at Ethan. It wasn't because you were embarrassed - you all spoke about such things quite openly - nor were you angry at him having asked in the first place - if anything, it was flattering, a man such as Ethan considering you attractive in that way. It was more of a constant thought in your head whenever you were in the same room with him or he talked to you or you looked at him or he so much as popped into your mind. You kept lying awake at night, intrusive thoughts of Ethan towering over you clouding your brain. You didn't know what it was but you knew you didn't like it.
You were pulled out of your thoughts as Victoria approached you, taking a couple of tomatoes you had spread in front of you and started cutting them up. You had been in charge of making dinner most days, with one or the other coming to join you in your cooking endeavors sooner or later. Today it seemed to be Vic, who was giggling away beside you, quite obviously dying to tell you something.
"And what is up with you?" You asked, a smirk on your face. You were happy your friend seemed so giddy and it had you itching to know why.
"I have a date!" Victoria was never one to keep things like these to herself for long - whenever she was positively excited about something, the world simply had to know. "Her name's Paula, she's on holiday here and we're going to go out for wine."
"Just wine?"
"Well, I'm gonna say, don't expect me back here tonight." She couldn't stop herself from smirking and then breaking out in another round of laughter and you joined freely. Good for her.
"I miss dates," you mused. "Or maybe - I don't know. Maybe I just miss at least staying the night with someone."
"You really need to get laid, babe."
"Who needs to get laid?" Damiano had appeared without warning, sneaking up on the two of you and pinching both of your waists teasingly before hopping on the counter next to where you were working. A slice of tomato was stolen and ended up in his mouth before you could react, only hitting him in the arm when it was much too late.
"Y/n," Victoria answered nonchalantly. You stared at her in annoyance but she didn't even catch your eye.
"So does Ethan! You guys should fuck."
"Not you too," you groaned. All of this seemed like a bad joke. In fact, you were starting to wonder if this was all some weird plot your friends had to get you to sleep with Ethan. But why would they?
"Huh?" Damiano sounded surprised but you didn't put it past him to simply put on a good act.
"Ethan asked her to hook up the other day."
"No way!" Damiano exclaimed. "He actually, fina- I mean, he actually asked you that?"
"Yup, and she shot him down," Victoria explained. You were getting more annoyed by the second. Especially because it felt like your love life (or lack thereof?) was being discussed without you. Plus, you couldn't shake the feeling they knew something you didn't.
"Aw, poor Ethan. You know, you should really give him the chance. Make the most of the fact that you've both got the house to yourselves tonight." Damiano's eyebrow wiggle earned him a tomato slice to the face due to pure irritation on your side. He wasn't bothered, quickly shoving it into his mouth and happily munching away on it.
"Wait, what do you mean? Where are you going?"
You sounded much more panicked than necessary. So what if you were alone in the house with Ethan? You'd survive. Easily. You'd read a bit of your book, maybe watch a movie, go to bed. You didn't even have to spend time with him. Right?
"Going out with my girlfriend, she's in town for work. Not sure where Thomas is off to but he's already left" Damiano shrugged, finally hopping off the counter to hopefully stop being in the way. "So, if there's anything you want to do, do it tonight."
***
So this was it. You were alone with Ethan. No, this was nothing. So what if you were alone with him? Not like it was going to change anything at all.
You had said your goodbyes for the night to the two lovebirds, wishing Victoria the most possible fun on her little date, before pouring yourself a glass of wine and retreating to the patio. You had no idea where Ethan was and you didn't mind.
The sun was setting, the temperature was more than bearable and you had your book lying next to you. Eyes closed trying to enjoy the last rays of sunshine, your hand grasped the stem of the wine glass, and fuck that moth scared the living daylights out of you. And caused you to spill your wine all over your blouse. Red wine. Crap. One was supposed to wash those out immediately, right? Right? You realised you had no idea, as you sprinted towards the upstairs bathroom, already unbuttoning for fast removal.
You threw the door open, feet set to move towards the basin, when you realised you weren't alone in the room. It happened in slow motion, as much as you hated the cliché of it all.
Ethan's back was towards you, strong, hard muscles visible under an array of water droplets that were slowly, slowly making their way downwards, hypnotising you and keeping your gaze locked on them. Your eyes were still travelling lower and lower when he noticed your presence, turning around out of reflex, and you could not help but notice he was not wrapped in a towel, nowhere close, when your eyes fell on-
Oh.
Oh.
In a rare moment of clarity, you tore your gaze away, looking up at his face instead, just to find him eyeing up your cleavage. Your blouse was halfway undone, putting your white lace bra on full display. Then his eyes snapped away and looked into yours instead. For a second, it felt like the world was standing still. Your brain only worked for another moment before it decided to let your body - or potentially your heart? - take over.
You told yourself 'fuck it' - or maybe you said it out loud, judging by the sudden smirk appearing on Ethan's face - and reached for the man in front of you. He reciprocated without hesitation, pulling you in and meeting your mouth with his, as he walked you backward until you hit the wall. His body felt hot against yours, providing a stark contrast to the cold tiles pressing into you. His hands cradled your face softly, fingers stroking along your cheeks, while he kissed you, open-mouthed, in a way that left you breathless.
If you had ever had doubts that sex with Ethan would not be worth it, they had evaporated into thin air altogether.
His hands had started roaming your body, finally landing on the last buttons of your blouse. You had expected him to slowly open them up, but instead, he tore the fabric apart in one swift movement, buttons flying and hitting the ground with little clacking noises. You wrecked your mouth from him for a moment, staring at him in both surprise and awe.
"Spiacente," he murmured, although he didn't look all that sorry. "I couldn't help myself. I can get them sewn back-"
"Ethan, stop talking and start fucking me."
Your bold words took both of you by surprise but none of you minded, simply relieved that you were on the same page. His hands were now grasping tightly onto your thighs and, and without giving you a warning, he lifted you up, still pressed against the wall. Your legs wrapped around him instinctively and he took a step back, finding his strength and balance, and slowly carrying you into his bedroom.
You couldn't stop staring at him. Ethan's beauty was a sight to behold on any given day, but the way his lips looked kissed after just a short while and his eyes had that kind of shine to them that had never previously been directed at you, it felt like you were looking at something ethereal. Never mind the fact that you knew he was completely naked, not just the toned chest that was pressing into your torse, but everything else. Hell, you were sure you felt a certain something press into the back of your thigh quite shamelessly.
He dropped you on his bed, leaving you to bounce slightly on the mattress as you lied on your back. He looked like he was about to devour you and you just knew you'd bend to his every wish.
Without any further hesitation, Ethan moved onto the bed, immediately grabbing onto the shorts you were wearing and slowly pulling them down your legs. He held eye contact with you the whole time and you were convinced you had never seen anything sexier in your life. Your panties were the next piece to leave your body. Normally, this would be the point you got nervous about, crossing your legs, hiding behind hands, anything to protect what little of your modesty you had left, but this was different. Ethan took all shame away from you.
"Is this okay?" He asked, as he slowly crawled upwards, spreading your legs and leaving hot, wet kisses along your calves. As much as you appreciated him asking for consent, you almost had to laugh - at this point in time, you had lost all willpower to deny him anything. So, with a blissful smile on your face, you eagerly nodded at him, your hand reaching down and tangling itself into his hair. He groaned as you gave a little tug and the sound was more than enough to get you even wetter than you already were.
At least that was what you thought up until Ethan put his mouth on you. You had been expecting a bit more foreplay, maybe his fingers, but instead you felt his tongue lick along the length of you. Your moan loudly echoed through the room and you had never been so glad that Vic, Thomas and Damiano had deserted the two of you in the house.
Your grasp on his hair tightened as he started flicking your clit with the tip of his tongue. The fact that you could feel his hair tickling the inside of your thighs only seemed to make you more sensitive. Suddenly, one of his fingers entered you, quickly to be joined by a second. Your back arched off the bed in an involuntary reaction as your breathing became more and more laboured. You could hear- hell, you could feel him chuckle against you.
With a sharp tug, you pulled his head away from you.
"I'm not going to be able to take much more, Ethan," you confessed. He looked up at you with wide eyes, chin wet from going down on you and fingers still slowly moving in and out, and you momentarily forgot what you meant to say. "So if you wanna fuck me, I suggest you get a move on."
He didn't need to be told twice. You still sighed in disappointment when he actually removed his fingers from you but you were quickly distracted by him moving them to your mouth and slipping them in. You eagerly sucked on them, twirling your tongue around them, tasting your own arousal, and his composure was slipping with every second he looked at you. He quickly pulled his fingers from your mouth to crawl further up your body, his cock moving against your leg. He was so well endowed it would have almost been frightening if you hadn't been so turned on.
Ethan kissed you with a force that was unparalleled. There wasn't even a question about who was in control. As his fingers trailed from your neck down past your collarbones you both suddenly seemed to remember you were still wearing a bra. You made short work of the piece of fabric, carelessly throwing it across the room, and he thanked you by squeezing your soft flesh in the most delicious way. You repaid the favour by letting your hand wander to his cock and giving him a few strokes. He immediately let out the most sinful moan you had ever heard, head collapsing onto your cleavage.
"I don't think you need any more help from me down there," you giggled.
"With you lying under me like this, I sure don't."
Moving your legs around his waist once more, you slowly guided him into you, your walls swallowing him bit by bit, careful not to stretch you out too fast with his size. It felt like heaven on earth. You both moaned in pleasure as Ethan slowly started moving, making sure you were comfortable as he looked into your eyes, while you broke the eye contact time and time again, too overwhelmed to leave your eyes open every time he thrust into you. You kept grabbing onto what you could, the back of his head, his shoulders, his butt, as he increased his speed, hitting you in all the right places every single time.
You knew you weren't going to last long, not with him on and in and all around you, not with his fingers playing with your nipple, not with his lips clumsily attaching themselves to various places around your neck and shoulders, and as you felt his hand between your legs, softly circling your clit once again, you were gone. You came in waves of euphoria, unashamed of the volume of your moans and the strength with which you pulled on his hair. Your actions, combined with you clenching around him and a few more thrust, had him follow you moments later.
He carefully slipped out of you, never once letting go of you, and turning you onto your side with him so you were facing each other. Both of you were still breathing heavily, vision cloudy, but intertwined. You were convinced he had ruined you - there was no way anyone was ever going to live up to how he made you feel.
"So, did it live up to your expectation?" You couldn't help but giggle as you posed the question. "Getting laid again after such a long time?"
Ethan pushed a damp strand of hair from your face. You hadn't expected such softness.
"It wasn't actually about getting laid, you know."
"Huh?"
"It was about you."
"Okay, you've lost me now," you said, brows knitting as your hand searched for his, finger entangling the same way your legs were doing. "What are you talking about?"
"I... I've liked you for a while. And I tried so much, but you never even noticed."
Your mind replayed the last few weeks you had spent with the band in their summer house. Instances of Ethan bringing you food, cocktails, adjusting the shade to make sure you were in it, offering to put sunscreen on your back. Moments of him searching for your company, moving much closer than necessary in the heat, arms constantly touching when you were sitting next to each other. Jokes and teasing from the others, drunken remarks. You hadn't paid attention to any of it. You wondered how you could have been so blind to a man so wonderful.
"Wait, so instead of asking me out like a normal person, you suggested we hook up?" You couldn't keep the laughter in now. The situation was simply too ridiculous and you had not yet stopped riding on your high from the endorphins he had caused.
"It was Vic's idea." He buried his head into the sheets, but you could still see his cheeks turn an adorable shade of pink. "She knew I missed sex and she said you mentioned something similar so she thought this was the way into your..."
"Pants?"
"Heart, actually."
You snuggled closer, arms wrapping around him so that your noses were touching.
"Well, as embarrassing as it is, it somehow worked, didn't it?" You stroked over his head lovingly. "And I'm sure not letting you go any time soon."

The ultimate How I Met Your Mother Finale rant
I know this has been done before, and I know I'm several years late to the party, but I don't care, so IN THIS ESSAY I WILL tell you about why this finale takes the spot as the second-worst finale in TV show history (because Game of Thrones is still, to this day, unbeatable, and it will probably stay like that forever).
But first, a little context: I've just finished binge-watching HIMYM. This binge has been going on for three days straight (my final exam of the semester is in a week and I should be studying, so the fact that the last few days were a partial waste of time makes me so mad). Second thing: I already knew how it would end, and yes, kids, it does ruin the show for you. It ruins the show so much it makes your blood boil when you rewatch certain scenes, but I will get to that.
You might want to make yourself a drink because this is a complete list of all the reasons why HIMYM's finale sucks - I'm warning you, it's gonna be looong.
It completely invalidates the entirety of season 9
This is one of the complaints people most often have with this series, and I have to agree. It would have been so much better if the last two episodes never existed, and they just showed Barney and Robin dancing at the reception after walking out of the chapel, Ted noticing Tracy and then the platform scene. "And that, kids, is the story of how I met your mother". Cut scene. Honestly, I don't get the hate people give to season 9, barring the last 2/3 episodes, especially since season 8 was so much worse (except for a few honourable mentions, like The Robin). S8 was slower, less funny, and less deep, and while the authors took a risk by making s9 happen in the span of a weekend it paid off: they took their time introducing the character of the Mother to the gang and fleshing her out. They make sure to highlight all the little ways in which Ted and Tracy are perfect for each other, and even tie up loose ends, like with the Slapsgiving episode, that was a filler but it wasn't boring to watch (although it may be problematic for different reasons, I'm not Chinese, so I can't say for sure if it's cultural appropriation or just the authors making fun of a particular movie genre).
Some episodes were arguably great: "Daisy" was amazing, and that whole fight between Marshall and Lily was so realistic and well thought out, "Sunrise" was extremely important for Ted's character development, same goes for Tracy and "How Your Mother Met Me", "Bedtime stories" was impressive, "Rally" was incredibly funny and proved once again what a beautiful character Barney Stinson is, so much so that even Robin never has doubts that he (the guy with the biggest commitment issues on the planet) will bail on her before the wedding, and says to Ted that "he always comes back". Daphne's character is super funny and the right amount of annoying, the shenanigans of the gang are well thought out and all of the characters (not just Barney) complete their arc in this season. The last two/three episodes butcher that.
Marshall and Lily
Marshall and Lily, arguably the world's most solid couple, are the only thing this God-awful finale gets right, especially Marshall, who is my second-favourite character, that finally gets everything he deserves. But what about Lily? They never mention her career after Italy, and I refuse to believe she goes back to being a kindergarten teacher as if her year in Rome meant nothing. I also refuse to think she becomes nothing but a political wife, the equivalent of Zoey, but without saving the world. We know she has three kids, but her postpartum depression is never really talked about much and they definitely had the screentime to delve into it.
Barney
Where do I even begin? Barney Stinson is, without a doubt, the best character in this series, the glue of the whole gang. I think the message they were trying to give is that, since his trauma stemmed from the absence of a father figure in his life, he could only truly heal by becoming a father as well. People also say that n°31 had to stay just a number, because who could match up with Barney Stinson? First of all, I call BULSHIT on that last point, because Robin wasn't the only girl Barney could have ended up marrying. I used to think that too, but it's just not true: that is the equivalent of saying that Barney was incapable to truly love a woman and commit to her, even after all the development he got, and that he only got one shot at love in life, and that's it. This goes against the point the showrunners try to make by having Ted and Robin end up together AND by having Tracy get with Ted in the first place: "it's never too late, you always have another chance at love, etc." And, let's face it, Barney and Robin are legendary, but Barney and Nora (hell, even Barney and Quinn!) were pretty good together too.
Second of all, if they wanted to give Barney a kid, they could have easily done that, before Barney married Robin. Barney's "redemption" starts when he gets with Robin the first time, hell maybe even when we meet James for the first time: Nora, Quinn, finding out who his father is, the episode dedicated to the lies his mum told him/finding James' father, him getting to know his own dad, etc... those are all steps along the way. The s9 episode where Barney accepts the relationship between Loretta and the reverend proves how far he's come. So why not give him a daughter BEFORE he proposes to Robin? Have him cheat on Nora/Quinn with n°31, giving him a relapse, and having him get closer to Robin while struggling to be a dad to Ellie. That would have been great.
Or, you know, don't give him children. What's the point of burning the Playbook if you're going to have him write the second edition? What's the point of having him do a complete 180 in the last few scenes and acting like having a kid is the only thing that makes him change? What's the point of doing that when the show spends entire episodes berating Marshall and Lily for "changing too much" when they have a kid?
Also, Barney is the "challenge accepted" guy. He loves his wife so much, he spent years wanting her, and then he gives up because there is no WiFi in his hotel. How does that make any sense at all? This is Barney Stinson, the "I will fly out to San Francisco and buy Lily a plane ticket", the "I will steal every girl from my best friend just to save him for Lily", the guy that wrote the Playbook (it takes effort to pull those plays off), the guy that planned for weeks his proposal, the guy that waited years to get back at the man who stole his first girlfriend, the guy that makes every night legendary... are you telling me that that guy becomes the equivalent of a bored housewife instead of living his best life while travelling the world? Come on. They don't even try to make it believable.
Ted
While watching seasons 7 and 8, I felt that Ted was becoming the worst character on the show: he was boring, depressed, basically had no good storylines, the whole thing with Victoria was pointless and inconclusive (and the whole "stop being in love with Robin" was completely out of character for her), but whatever, we could have accepted that because it passed the message that two people could be good together, without being soulmates - which, by the way, renders the TedxRobin ship pointless, because they were right for each other, but Ted and Tracy were soulmates. Him being hung up on Robin in the latter seasons is almost pathetic, and the thing he does with the locket is insane, not romantic - BUT I will say this: it can be seen in two ways, depending on who's watching. I personally like the two as friends, so I see the whole thing as a "Dahmer" situation, but I get the people who see it as a "Dobler" one and see what he did as a grand romantic gesture.
The problem, though, is that the whole TedxRobin ship gets pretty old, pretty fast: it's an annoying on-and-off thing, that should have ended with the locket. Because, yes, Ted was in a dark moment, yes, he was probably depressed, yes, he thought Robin was his only shot at happiness, but he changes during season nine! He spends entire episodes letting go of Robin, including the one where she transforms into a balloon and flies away. Ted is the good guy, ultimately. He is the guy that is genuinely happy for his best friends. In one of the deleted scenes from the finale, he meets Robin years later and says that he's so happy with Tracy he never thought about Robin in that way anymore. All of that gets thrown in the trash. Why do that? To use a Harry Potter metaphor, Ted is Severus Snape, while Barney is James Potter: the former loved the girl of his dreams with all his heart, even to the point of creepiness, but they weren't meant to be together.
Robin
This, along with the next point, is the worst of all: Robin is the worst character of the entire finale. Her relationship with Ted in season 2 is wonderful, and I say that as a full-on Barney/Robin shipper. There was never a problem in their relationship, apparently, but they then break up because they have an "expiration date" and ultimately want different things in life. Except that Ted is not her soulmate. The only times when Robin wants Ted are the times where (1) she can't have him because he's either trying to move on or (2) the times where it's convenient, for example when they become roommates again and they solve their disputes again. Around that time, we see perfectly that Ted had moved on and that the person getting hurt was Barney. It's one thing to see Ted and Robin in the finale as two people picking up where they had left off after they dated. But this is not the case.
In season 7, we have the exchange that should have put an end to any and all TedxRobin drama, and that completely invalidates whatever the writers wrote after that about the two of them: Ted declares his love - "I think you know how you feel about me now. I don't think time's gonna change that. Just tell me: do you love me?" To which she answers "No". And Ted also says later to Marshall, that he's "happy because he can finally move on".
What a load of crap.
Getting over someone is hard, believe me, I would know. And, oftentimes, it doesn't happen until we find someone else to love (and from the moment he meets Tracy, there is no one else for Ted). But by giving Ted feelings for Robin after this moment, it takes away from the beauty of it- because it's one of the most heartbreaking feelings in the world when you declare your love to someone and they don't love you back. Ted and Robin were both honest at that moment, and it was the last genuinely good exchange between them. After that, during season 8 they try to show us Ted trying to get over her (and failing) and in season 9 Ted getting over her completely. This is also weirdly paced because at the beginning of s8 both are in happy relationships with other people and there's no jealousy (which is good, because at least they weren't toxic) and they seem just friends (when Robin leaves Nick to go see him in the middle of the night, she implies that she would do it for any of her friends), but after Ted breaks up with Veronica because of Robin everything is weirdly coated in this sort of tension between the two: first Ted loves her, but she doesn't, so when he helps her by taking her to Barney's proposal ("which means my best bro in the world has given me his blessing").
And, by the way, every time they try to paint Ted as the guy that comes through for Robin after this moment, they dumb down Barney's character. And still fail to make Ted a better guy than him (see: the carousel in Central Park).
Yes, Robin and Ted have some chemistry, but it is nothing compared to what Robin and Barney have. Every time Robin is jealous of Barney, it doesn't seem like a stupid whim, just because some other child is playing with her toys (except, perhaps, during The Robin). Robin and Barney's relationship would need a whole other post, and the next time I rewatch the series I will write down all the things that make them perfect for each other, but, to me, the biggest difference between the two relationships is this: in season 6, when she's not dating either one of them, Ted accuses Robin of never making him feel needed while they were together, whereas Barney praises her for it. Those are elective affinities: that's what Barney and Robin have, and what Tracy and Ted have.
Barney and Robin have more or less the same arc: they both get over their fear of commitment and they do that with each other. Time and time again, we are told that if they're ever going to settle down, it would only be with the other. The first time they break up is honestly so stupid, and even when they are broken up, they are the best of friends, which also makes Robin's behaviour in the finale look so stupid. The way the two of them fit together is unparalleled, both in a romantic and a platonic way.
Think about it: Robin makes Barney a better man, while she makes Ted a worse one.
Also, the whole point that there are different seasons in life for everything gets thrown out the window: apparently, Ted and Robin (that were a couple that ultimately worked in their young twenties) are the same people in their forties.
But that's not even the worst part. The worst part is that the two final episodes butcher Robin's arc as well: episode 23 starts with Lily saying "I want this girl to be in our lives" and we know Robin never made other friends outside of the gang, because she didn't need to, and now she walks away from everything because of fucking Ted?? This is saying "hey, Robin was only in the group for Ted, who brought her in, and now she leaves because he's not her puppy anymore". Robin was the one that was eternally indecisive between Ted and Barney and you're telling me that three years and many many life experiences later, she's still not sure?
The point of her story is learning how to get over her fear of commitment, learning how to be there for her friends (there's an entire episode dedicated to that, and it's the one where Lily's pregnant and we meet Robin's ex-best friend in Canada), and how to balance her job and her life. Also, the way her character is treated is un-feminist and un-progressive: she becomes Ted's consolation prize. She is passive throughout s9. She cannot, ultimately, win the modern-day struggle most women have and balance out career and love life, so her true life, her "happy chapter" begins after she has already accomplished everything she wanted to and she's free for Ted. She doesn't even go back to him, she just the prize the main character wanted for all his life and only got in the end because his wife died (ONE SCENE, people, ONE SCENE!). Also, this makes Tracy the "broodmare" that gives him the kids he wanted, and his "happy family" experience before he goes to be with his one true love.
The mother
This. This makes me so mad. One whole season spent on building up Tracy's character, just for it to go to waste. It would have been so easy to screw her up, but she is hands down the best thing about s9. She's the perfect woman for Ted and the episode shot through her perspective is the sweetest. By the end, I liked her more than Robin and Lily. She was the perfect addition to their group, she fit together with them in a perfect way, and they show us the biggest moment of her and Ted's life... for what? To have her die in a few sentences? And I don't care if they shot a funeral scene, I don't care if the finale was supposed to be 40 minutes long, because, in the end, it wasn't. The scene where Ted meets her is the second most beautiful one (after Barney's proposal to Robin) and the climax of the whole show, but they ruin her... and for what? The chemistry Ted has with her, he has with no one. The joy she brings him, the way she understands him, is unlike any other. I am sure that one of the reasons they killed her off was the shock value and I hate it.
I cannot stress this enough: Tracy makes Ted a better person. When he's with Robin, Ted is "the nice guy" in the most selfish and narcissistic version of the trope. When he's with Tracy, love comes easy to Ted. Also, the scenes between the two of them are arguably the best Ted scenes of the show.
The kids' reactions (ugh)
It's not really what they say- it's the way they say it. The end of HIMYM was not supposed to be funny, even though the show is a sitcom. It was supposed to be bittersweet and beautiful, because it's the end of an era, and the writers must have known that. So, Ted finishes telling his story, reveals to the audience that their now-beloved Tracy is dead, and the reaction is: "No, ahah, you totally have the hots for Aunt Robin" (their words, not mine). Like, what the actual fuck? I cringed when Penny said that. It's tasteless and not fun at all. Even if it has been six years... It's still your fucking mum, show a little bit of sadness at the thought of her.
The reason the show ended this way
What makes me especially mad is that I know for a fact that the reason they went with this ending is that it was the original one, always intended for the show, from season 2 onwards. And, if you watch it right after s2, it makes sense. But if you consider the eight years that passed and the massive character development, then no, it's not the best possible one. So many things hadn't been decided yet back in s2, especially about Barney, Ted, and Robin, and I hate that they didn't dare to scrap their work. This ending probably had sentimental meaning to the writers, but authors have to do what's best for their characters, not themselves. It's like with GoT, in a way: I think that the authors were all too aware of the impact of HIMYM and didn't believe that their finale would live up to the expectations... which compelled them to make the worst decision possible?? Every single character is OOC during the episode. Oh, and Marshall and Lily moving in the last episode is a ripoff from Friends (or maybe a tribute? Idk). Anyway, I believe that the authors were too attached to their sentimental version of "what should have been" and didn't give the characters the endings they truly deserved.
"Life works this way" // "Life only moves forward"
Some people say that the show is realistic because that's how life works. But I call super-BS on that. That might be true, and yes, people do get sick and die (Max, Marshall's dad...) and life does go on. But then, you don't frame it the way they did. It's just bad storytelling if you do it like that. And the problem is not the structure of season 9, because the characters develop in that season. The problem isn't even the mother's death. The problem is Ted ending up with Robin because that's not life moving forward for him, that's him, doing the same thing he did in 2005, 25 (twenty-fucking-five) years before!
In conclusion, this finale is incoherent and inconclusive, and not satisfying at all. The only character that gets a good ending is Marshall: why is that? What makes his ending great? It's the fact that his character arc is respected and he finally gets what he's been working towards for more than ten years.

Previous Part || Shut In Masterlist
Your fingers tapped rhythmically against the table, an indicator of the nervousness that was building to a crescendo in your chest.
“Are you sure you wanna do this?” he asked, hand placed gently on your forearm.
You nodded, eyes downcast. If you looked at him, you wouldn’t be able to find it in yourself to follow through with it.
“I am,” you said quietly, swallowing to get rid of the lump in your throat.
“Okay,” he confirmed, letting his arm drop gently.
Ten minutes to go. You took a sip of water nervously. The glass had already found itself shifting back and forth on the table in search of the perfect place. It was a fruitless quest anyway.
The door was painted a dark green, steps leading up to it from the pavement.
“Are you sure he won’t mind?” you asked quietly, standing a stair below him in apprehension. Neither of you had contacted him or sent a message, just showed up at his place exhausted and covered in a thin layer of dirt.
“I know he won’t.” Sam raised his fist to knock thrice, a pause before knocking two more times.
A code.
He turned around slightly, checking to see if you were fine. The longer you stood out there, the more afraid you were of someone spotting the both of you, putting an end to your life before it even began. You had a feeling that paranoia would continue for a long time.
The door swung open, revealing a tall man with blonde hair leaning against the doorway with one arm. There was a nick above his eyebrow, an old scar that hadn’t faded over time. Even though his other hand was concealed behind the door, you could tell that he was holding something by the way his muscles were clenched. Years of training wouldn’t disappear overnight.
"Sam." Surprise overtook his face in a second. "You're alive."
"Don't sound so happy, I can't handle it." Sam rolled his eyes, an affectionate smile on his face. "This is Y/N, we need a place to stay."
“It’s just been a while since I heard from you, man. Coming from a hit?” Riley didn’t think twice about moving aside, scrutinising dried blood on your person as you walk past. “Nice to meet you, I’m Riley.”
It was a cane in his hand. Sam’s mention of his limp flashed in your mind.
You gave him a small wave and a quiet re-introduction of yourself, following Sam into the house.
“You could say that.” Sam paused, a hand on Riley’s shoulder as he says something out of your ear shot to him.
Riley’s face turned stoic immediately, a nod of his head and a deep exhale soon following. “Stay as long as you need.”
“Thank you.” You pressed your lips together in a straight line with a corner quirked upwards, a half smile of sorts.
“Bathroom’s down the hall, to the right.” He pointed out the direction. “I’m getting you some food. Gumbo still your thing, Wilson?”
“Anything other than peanut butter.”
Riley was a blessing you could have never prepared for; knowing exactly what you both would need and anticipating emotions you had no idea you’d be feeling. For someone who had guests show up completely uninvited to crash on his couch, he was ready as ever, given that he had been through the same thing a while ago.
It was difficult. Fuck that, it was one of the hardest things to go; not pretending like everything around you would fall into soon and that you would be fine because you had to. You had worked too damn hard for you not to be.
But you knew things weren’t going to be fine right off the bat and it would be foolish to think it was.
“Sam, look at me,” you commanded gently, but there was an edge of firmness to your tone. You were sitting on the bench near the entrance of the park.
“I’m sorry, things were going good and I thought-” He shook his face that was hiding in his palm, elbows resting on his knees.
His attacks didn’t come nearly as frequently as yours. It was easy to think that he had no trauma just because he learnt how to deal with it better.
“Look at me, Sammy.” It was just a walk in the park, a stroll that should have lasted twenty minutes tops. You had been on that trail before for the same purpose but something triggered him today, someone’s gaze who lingered too long on the both of you.
He clenched his fists, lifting his head to meet your gaze.
“Breathe with me.” You exaggerated the movements to have him follow, a system the both of you had come up with when anxiety attacks used to hit at random. A temporary solution to an aftermath that would go on for hours, days even.
It took him a few staggered breaths to get there, finally falling into routine with you. He could feel his heartbeat slow to what it was but the pit in his stomach wouldn’t subside for a while.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t-”
“You have nothing to apologise for,” you reassured, still making sure he was breathing with you. You were nervous too and your eyes were still darting about to survey your surroundings, but he needed you at that moment. “We’re safe. We’re okay.”
“No one’s here,” he mumbles, interlacing your fingers and bringing it to his forehead to lean against your hand.
“We’re okay,” you repeated, giving him the space he needed. “We’re okay.”
“Will someone be joining you?” The waiter prodded softly. If it wasn’t your incessant tapping at the table, the clammy palms and constant checking of your watch was a clear giveaway that you could use a bit of kindness that day.
“Yeah, any minute now.” You smiled at her. She simply nodded, refilling your glass of water before leaving you alone.
You looked at your watch and sighed.
Seven minutes.
Things were fine. Things were good.
Sam and you were… undefined. Labels almost seemed too constrictive for now and it wasn’t like the both of you didn’t know what the other felt. It was kind. It was soft. Sometimes you kissed his cheek when the sunlight bounced off his face while he watered the succulents and the smile he gave you was addictive. Other times he snaked an arm around your waist and leaned his head on your shoulder while you watched the street from the kitchen window.
It made you happy, and so you tried to force away the stem of doubt that creeped into your heart.
Riley had introduced the concept of movie nights and the occasional mob movie would make it in there just to poke fun at. He showed you around the city, inviting you to go grocery shopping with him at the farmers market, the best places to get a glimpse of the music scene or to subtly point out potential date night spots.
He was a genuinely nice guy, and if you thought Sam was fun to hang out with, you were not prepared for the both of them together. You could tell why Sam adored him.
“Y/N, I don’t know how you stayed with him for all that time and didn’t murder him in his sleep.” Riley glared at Sam who had once again left his collection of music CDs strewn around on a couch. It was all in jest; it was well known that Sam found an anchor in music that kept him up late at night for a sense of calm.
“It was a close call sometimes,” you added playfully, giving Sam a grin.
“You weren’t exactly easy to survive with either.” He scoffed. “How many times did we watch Megamind in a row? Eight?”
“You wouldn’t stop watching Die Hard,” you accused, arms crossed over your chest. “It was payback.”
“You made the rule saying we couldn’t watch things more than twice in a row and you broke it first.”
“I’m gonna go,” Riley interjected. “But y’all keep at this. I heard it’s good for your soul.”
“Stay there,” Sam demanded, pointing to where he was standing a second ago. “You’re gonna be play judge since you started this shit.”
“I really don’t want to.” He shook his head, staying put nonetheless, amusement clear as day on his face.
“The laundry.”
“The dishes.”
You both narrowed your eyes at each other. His argument didn’t hold a match to yours.
“You know what, I was wrong,” Riley announced to no one in particular. “I’m pretty sure you guys would kill each other under any other circumstance.”
The smile on your face faltered but you straightened it back out with a clearing of your throat before firing a comeback.
It was barely a second, almost unnoticeable. But Sam caught it.
Four minutes.
Almost time.
The tapping became more intense, and the rate at which you pulled out your phone to check the time increased.
Fuck, this was a bad idea. How were you supposed to behave with him after all this time?
Something was wrong. Something was off.
Sam wasn’t blind to it. He could see it under the smile you eased into at game night, the complaining when too much food was ordered for three people to eat, the good natured teasing when he rolled over to your side of the bed at night to steal your blanket.
Something was eating at you, gnawing at you from the inside.
His suspicion was confirmed when you whispered at 2am one night to what you thought was an asleep partner that you wanted to move out. Find a place of your own.
His stomach dropped instantly but he didn’t so much as move a muscle.
“I need to get out. I need to have a life,” you sniffed, doing your best not to wake him up as you traced circles into his skin lightly. “I don’t know what it’s like to be independent. I won’t know unless I figure it out myself.”
The air had a chill to it and it was one of the times you had asked him to sleep in the guest bedroom with you instead of on his own, knowing that it was one of those nights where you could use a little extra warmth.
“Even when we were in there I couldn’t stop thinking about whether this thing between us was just because we were forced to stay together. You said it wasn’t, and I know that but I can’t help but think-” Your voice cracked. “Would you come back to me if things were different?”
He didn’t answer, even though he knew what he wanted to say with all the certainty in the world. Your fingers continued to draw on his skin. He continued to let you.
Sam didn’t even bring up the conversation that morning, or that week. Instead, he held you a bit closer whenever he could and gave you the space to hopefully open up to him on your own time, letting you know that he’d be there to listen.
It took a while. You both were in the middle of watching a movie that wasn’t Die Hard when you told him that you needed to talk to him about something. The hesitancy in your voice and the fixation your fingers had with the hem of your sweater was painful to witness.
He understood, of course. He always did. That you needed to experience what it was like to live, not survive. That decades of living with other kids, living under an abuser, living in a safehouse for months, was restrictive and suffocating and you needed to find what made you happy.
And so did he. It was something both of you had to do eventually, exit the bubble you had been staying in under such ardent protection for those two months.
Riley was wonderfully supportive of it, vowing to find you the best apartment that New Orleans had to offer. You didn’t doubt it.
His place had been colourful and bright and everything you could have asked for after the monotone walls you were used to. But it wasn’t yours.
A few weeks later you had moved out. Sam left a lingering kiss on your forehead, a sign to say that he’d be here whenever, whatever.
You made a Shakira joke. He laughed.
A completely fresh new start. If you failed now, it was all on you.
And what a terrifying thought that was.
It had been four months since you had left Riley’s apartment behind.
Four months since you had seen either of them.
The cafe was starting to feel too small for this event. Too intimate, too-
When the bell above the cafe chimes, something at the back of your mind instantly wakes up, sending you on high alert.
“Y/N?” he called out from behind you.
You knew he’d be early.
“Sam.” You breathed out, standing up to face him.
Video calls didn’t do him any justice. He had a particular glow to him, an aura of confidence that wasn’t there the last time you saw him. His beard was neatly trimmed and the smile that tugged at his lips the minute you caught his eye was beautiful.
You didn’t realise how different he looked until the time apart. Months of makeshift workouts and peanut butter as your only source of protein had done a number on him. You remembered him being leaner, and what you now realised was the constant burden of fatigue on his face.
“You look good.” An understatement escaped you, but he did.
He had a deep blue shirt on that hugged him in all the right places. Months of seeing him only black and grey had you damn near drooling when he wore other colours after you got out.
Not that you were staring, but his biceps had definitely made a wonderful return.
“You’re not so bad yourself.” Sam sent you a smile that instantly put you at ease. “Independence looks good on you, sweetheart.”
You gave a small laugh, gesturing for him to take a seat. Should you have hugged him? Shook his hand? Kissed hi-
“It’s been a while,” he politely interrupted your overthinking. “How are things going?”
You let out a small breath. It was a big question, one that you had answered over text and call a few times but it was different now. He was in front of you now and you couldn’t bullshit the way you used to on call occasionally.
“Weird,” you admitted. “I don’t know what to do with myself now that I have all this time.”
“It takes some gettin’ used to.” He nodded in agreement, leaning back in his chair.
A lot of your time went into trying new hobbies. Knitting, pottery, drawing- anything that you could get your hands on. Things didn’t always catch on, some discarded just after the first week. Others stuck, bringing you bits of triumph every time you moved forward with your newfound skill.
“You still seein’ your therapist?” He flashed a smile at the waitress who filled his glass of water.
Ah, yes. Dr. Bishop had been one of the first people you sought out.
“Yeah.” You took a sip of water. “See her weekly.”
You still had money left over from all the hit jobs that you had done. As much as you wanted to leave every inkling of that life behind, you needed the cash to live. You had enough for the time being, but you knew that eventually you had to start working; if not for the money then for the peace of mind.
“How’s that goin’?”
“She thinks I talk in elaborate metaphors. The gang’s what I call my toxic family, he was my abusive father, stuff like that.”
There were moments where you thought you saw someone you knew standing at a corner, vendors giving you icy looks from across the street, footsteps outside your door that seemed too damn loud. But nothing ever came of it.
“Thanks for the tip, by the way.” You extended a smile to him in appreciation for the idea.
“Worked with my therapist, figured it would be the same with yours.” He shrugged casually. It wasn’t like you wanted to lie to her, and you weren’t. But some things were better left in the dark.
“But I think it’s helping.” You exhaled deeply, eyes downcast. “The nightmares are reducing.”
“That’s a lot of progress.” The corner of his mouth quirked upward in pride.
Several feelings erupted from that look, some that you’d spend the whole day revelling in if you didn’t force yourself to move on.
“How about you?” you diverted the subject back to him. “How’s Riley?”
“He says he misses ya.” Sam laughed. “Says he can’t handle me alone, that he needs you back to save him.”
“What have you been doing to that poor man?” you teased, easing back into your seat. “He was fine when I left him.”
“He’s got a fancy new job now and it’s been going to his head. Needed a little humbling.”
“You’re not going too hard on him, are you?” Even though you knew he wasn’t, it was fun to make sure.
“Nah, I’d say it’s just about the right amount.” Sam grinned and you felt the familiar flutter return to your stomach. “I’ve been doing good. Working on getting my license.”
“Oh yeah, how’s that going?” You were thrilled when he said he was going to look into becoming a youth counselor, knowing that it was something he had been genuinely wanting to do for ages.
“With my background, or lack of it, it’s a little trickier than I thought it would be,” he divulges a bit more seriously. “Riley’s been pulling a few strings and I got a few contacts but it’s gonna take some more time.”
You bit your lip, worry rising for him. He deserved it, he earned it. It fucking sucked that it wasn’t going to be an easy, direct path.
“We’ll figure it out,” you said quietly, reaching out to intertwine your fingers with his in reassurance.
The contact brings with it a small spark. You wondered if he still felt it.
“Yeah. We will.” He sent you a soft smile at your action, not making any effort to move it. “You been on any dates lately?”
You let out a snort at that. “Loads. Have fellas lining up at every corner for me.”
“I bet.” He’s more bold, a bit more open than he was in the first month when you both got out. “How many of them do I have to fight off?”
“I’d say six as a rough estimate.” Your expression mimicked one of consideration. “I hope you’ve been getting your hours in at the gym.”
“I’ll kick it up a notch,” he promised, hands raised in surrender.
“You better. We’re supposed to go for laser-tag.” A dumb callback to a joke he made on one of your last days there.
“Or paintball.” He remembered. It made you unnecessarily giddy. “I added an escape room to the list too.”
“Hilarious,” you fired at him, rolling your eyes slightly but the happiness on your face proved otherwise.
His laughter died down eventually, paving the way for the comfortable silence that lingered between you both. Your eyes fell down to where your hand still held his, biting your lip to conceal a smile.
“Y/N,” he called out, pulling your gaze back to his. “Jokes aside… how are you?”
You let out a breath at his question. You knew it was coming.
“Riley found me an apartment,” you murmured.
Sam looked up from his phone. “Yeah?”
“It’s a nice place. Lots of sunlight. Quiet too.” You toyed with your fingers. “But it’s about an hour away. More if you consider traffic.”
Sam set his phone down gently on the bedside table, indicating that you had his full attention.
“I don’t want you to think I’m abandoning you, because I’m not. I wouldn’t, I just-”
“Hey,” he interrupted calmly, twisting his body to face you. “I don’t think you’re abandoning me. If this is what you need, then you should do it.”
“I don’t know if this is what I need. I don’t know what I’m doing, I’ve never been-” the frustration in your voice only increased as you went on. “-I don’t even know if this is going to work. What if I hate it?”
“Finding out what you hate is just as important as what you like, I think.” He watched you toy with the fidget square he had gotten you. “And you know that if you don’t feel like it, then you can come back here at any moment.”
“I know.” It was a comforting thought. A safety net.
“But would this make you happy?” That caught you by surprise.
It wasn’t something you had thought of. You thought of the negative consequences, the devastating effects it could have on you, how it could be the worst possible decision you’d ever make.
“I don’t know,” you mumbled, a new anxiety setting in. “I guess we’ll see.”
You liked the neighbours who played the piano way too loud at 2am, the really terrible coffee at the therapist’s office and the feeling the paper plane on your dresser gave you when you occasionally looked at it.
You didn’t like how hot the apartment could get, especially during the afternoon, or the guy who sold magazines down the street who cursed at everyone for no reason, or the gentrified Indian food they served at the mall.
But Sam was right. Figuring out what you didn’t like was just as beautiful a journey as figuring out what you did.
“I’m happy.” You breathed out. “Or I'm working towards being happy. But it’s there.”
He doesn’t say anything to that. Simply slipped his palm under yours to lift your hand, pressing a kiss to your knuckles.
“I’m proud of you.”
If anyone could feel the heat that rose to your face they would probably think you had a fever.
The fear that you had, the one of what things would be like if you weren’t forced to survive in a confined space together, had begun to fade the minute he called out your name that day.
It was Sam. Your Sam.
You shake yourself out of your train of thought with a small smile, making a move to gather up your belongings without letting go of his hand for a second.
“Well, c’mon then. Those paintballs aren’t going to shoot themselves.”
“Are you saying this is a date?” There was a smirk on his face that wasn’t there a minute ago.
“Would you still consider it one once I annihilate you?” You tilted your head in a challenge.
“That would never happen, first of all.” He scoffed. “Second… I was thinking that maybe we could do something normal for a change.”
That had you more interested than the prospect of adventure sports. You had enough of it for a lifetime, frankly speaking.
“Lead the way, Cinnamon.” He only rolled his eyes at the nickname, sending you a vaguely threatening look. You just laughed.
“This place got good coffee?” He looked around at the establishment and its patrons.
“One of the best.”
“Then I don’t see why we have to go anywhere else,” he offered and you nodded, relaxing back into your place with the same sense of warmth in your heart that only intensified with his proposal.
He raised his hand up to flag the server, the same girl who had been helping you out since you got there, asking for two menus.
The smile he sent her was infectious. It was good.
“Sam,” you began quietly. “I missed you.”
His eyes softened, the sunlight reflecting in it making it shine like dravite. “I missed you, too.”
“Ready to order?” The waitress stands beside you with a notepad.
He looked at you and you nodded with a smile.
Things were different. You were different.
And he still came back to you.

Billy Loomis x Fem! Reader x Stu Macher
Key:
(Y/N)- Your Name
(F/E/F)- Favorite Easy Food
The rest of the classes were nothing special, mainly consisting of me having to introduce myself. I had a class with Tatum which was nice. It helped me settle into the new atmosphere and the new kids. She told me who to avoid and who was alright. Finally the bell rang, signaling the end of the last class and I was more than excited to get out of the school. I quickly walked to my locker and started to put up my textbooks, smiling when Sidney walked up to her locker not too long after.
"So how did your first day go?" She questioned curiously.
"Pretty good. Nothing too interesting. Just a lot of "tell me a fun fact about yourself". The stupid shit." I shrugged and put up an Algebra textbook. She laughed and nodded. It wasn't long after that Billy showed up by our lockers, for Sidney I assumed since they were dating. I didn't pay him much mind and finished my task of putting the books up before closing and locking the locker. Sidney did as well and we started walking out of the school. Tatum soon joined us on our walk as we exited the crowded school.
"I'm glad school's over. That shit was boring." I commented which made Sidney nod and Tatum laugh before nodding as well. I smiled and gripped the strap of my backpack as we walked. As we headed towards our houses Stu came up to us, seemingly out of nowhere, and handed Tatum and I dandelions. I took it and looked at the puffy ball on top of the stem.
"You know if you make a wish before blowing the little seeds off that it's supposed to make your wish come true." I teased before blowing on it and dispersing the little white fuzzies.
"What did you wish for, (Y/N)?" Stu asked.
"Can't tell or it won't come true." I teased causing him to pout dramatically. I laughed and rolled my eyes. I grabbed a piece of paper from my bag and scribbled down my number twice, handing one to Sidney and one to Tatum. "If you want to call I'll be free tonight." I said cheerfully and they smiled, taking the paper. "Call me, call me on the line, call me, call me any, anytime~" I sang quietly before laughing to myself.
We kept walking and soon enough I had to go the other direction of the group.
"I'll see you guys tomorrow. Don't hesitate to call!" I said, making a phone sign with my hand, and smiled before heading to my house. I felt eyes on me and turned back, catching Billy staring at me again only for him to avert his eyes quickly. It was almost exact to what had happened earlier. I brushed it off again and walked a little longer before heading into the house.
"How was school?" My mom eagerly asked. I gave her a soft smile and tapped my fingers against the strap of my backpack.
"Good. I made some friends so that was cool." She seemed ecstatic at the news.
"Oh I'm so happy! I was so worried you'd be alone today." She clasped her hands together as she spoke.
"Well no need to worry. I'm gonna go get started on my homework." I started to head to my room.
"I have a meeting I have to go to tonight for my new job. I probably won't be home 'til late. There's food in the fridge. I figured you could make yourself something." I nodded and she smiled. "Alright I'll be leaving in about ten minutes."
"Alright. I'll probably just be doing homework and relaxing so if you need me you can call." She nodded and I headed to my room, grabbing out my work and starting on it. There really wasn't too much to do which I was thankful for. 'Anything is better than homework.' I thought as the pencil scratched against the surface of the notebook paper.
After I finished my work I went to the kitchen to make some dinner, making something easy like (F/E/F). I watched television while I ate and then cleaned up.
"Alright, time for horror movies." I said excitedly to myself. It was already dark out which made the atmosphere perfect for a scary movie. I looked through the stack of movies I had and settled on Halloween. I had seen it a ton before but loved it anyways. I popped it in and started the movie, going to the kitchen to mame popcorn while the beginning part played since it wasn't anything too intense.
The phone suddenly rang and I went to answer it while the popcorn started to cook on the stove.
"Hello?"
"Hey honey, this meeting is going to run pretty late and since it's a decent drive I'm just going to rent a hotel room and then come home after I sleep. Are you going to be okay by yourself?" My mom's voice echoed over the line.
"Yeah I'll be fine. I'm old enough to take care of myself." My tone was half playful and half serious. 'Sometimes it feels like she treats me like a baby.' I thought while twirling the cord of the phone around my finger.
"Alright, well, if you need anything you know my number." She seemed hesitant but didn't seem to have much of a choice when it came to leaving me alone.
"Yes mom. Love you."
"Love you too."
I hung up the phone and started to walk back to the kitchen when it rang again. "What does she want?" I mumbled, assuming my mom had forgotten to tell me something during the phone call.
"Yes mo-" I was cut off when a voice interrupted me. It was low and gravely, managing to send a shiver down my spine and for a moment I thought my heart was going to leap out of my chest.
"Hello, (Y/N)."

Haley’s sitting next to you when you snap to, sitting on a bench in a park. The same park, in fact, down the block from the apartment where you first lived with Aaron and Jack in 2012.
This is the park where Jack learned to play soccer…
You have a feeling that something terrible has happened, that something isn’t right.
“Don’t worry about that, right now,” Haley says, startling you a little. “You’re safe.”
You look at her, finding her surprisingly aged in the time since you last saw her. “Haley? It really is you, isn’t it?”
She smiles at you. “Glad you can still recognize an angel when you see one.” There’s something behind her voice, the glints of her offbeat sense of humor you love so much.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” you snort. “You’re not an angel.”
She shrugs with a wry smile. “Maybe not, but then again, maybe none of us are.”
You take a moment to look around, finding the park exactly the same as you left it. Except, you note, you’re the only people there. The playground rests empty of children, curious dogs are absent from the grounds, couples lounging in the grass are nowhere to be found.
Why here? Why now?
All at once, the memory rushes over you.
“Aaron,” you say, struggling for breath. You cough, and something wet crawls up your throat, making you cough again. Something dark lands in spatters across Aaron’s face and the collar of his shirt. You feel the compulsion to brush it away, but one of your arms feels leaden, trapped.
He’s crying. And talking.
“Hang on, baby. Hang on. I’m here.”
All you can say is his name, over and over, as you reach for him with the arm . There’s blood on your hands and part of you realizes you’re dying, probably.
“What happened?” You hear yourself sputter.
Aaron shushes you, brushing a shaky hand over your forehead. “It’s okay. You’re fine. You’re going to be okay. I love you. I’m here. You’re gonna be just fine.”
It sounds more like he’s trying to convince himself rather than you. You don’t mind.
Everything goes dark.
“Haley…” You look over at her again and she grabs your arm, stemming your panic.
She shushes you once, short. “You’re fine.”
Tears pool in your eyes before falling down your cheeks. “I don’t want to die. I’m not ready to go. Aaron, the kids, they - ”
“You’re not going to die,” she assures you, standing and holding her hand out to you. “You’re just spending some time with me for a little while. Is that okay?”
Her small, concerned frown warms you, and you know she’s actually asking. There’s a kind of understanding that she’ll just go away and you’ll be left in the darkness if that’s what you want.
It’s not.
“Yeah,” you reply. “That’s okay.”
“Good.” Her face brightens and you stand. She tucks your hand into the crook of her arm and the two of you begin to walk, the landscape transforming around you.
It doesn't make a lot of sense. You seem to walk through the park, then the apartment where you lived when Isaac was a baby, then the new house in Woodbridge with the twins, then the bullpen, all the way down the block to a house you recognize as Aaron and Haley’s - the big house they bought when they moved to D.C. in ‘98.
The house where she died.
“I have a couple people who really want to see you,” she says, by way of explanation. “I figured it would be easiest to meet here.”
You step up to the porch and into the house, removing your shoes out of habit. There’s no trace of the blood or broken glass from the Foyet altercation. Everything seems in place, right down to Jack’s army men neatly arranged on the living room coffee table.
It even smells the same - the light, floral smell of Haley’s perfume and something you can only describe as Aaron winds through the house, making it feel more lived-in than any time you’d been inside it after the divorce.
“Momma!” A little girl with dark hair streaks across the room and throws herself into your arms.
You catch her and bring her close. She’s probably six years old, maybe a little younger. When she leans back to look at you, you’re met with Aaron’s eyes.
The recognition is immediate and you grin at her. “Hi, baby girl.”
She smiles back at you, a mirror image. “Auntie Haley told me you’d come to visit.”
“Did she?” You look over at Haley, whose fondness for your daughter is open and obvious.
It’s only fair - my fondness for her son knows no bounds.
“Yep. Gramma’s here, too.”
You look around, your baby girl tucking into your chest as best she can given her size. Evelyn steps in from the back porch, closes the sliding door behind her, a glass of wine in her hand just like it would be in life, and smiles at you.
“Good afternoon, sweetheart,” she says, crossing the room to embrace you and press a kiss to your cheek. She and Haley look about the same age, maybe forty or forty-five. Her resemblance to Sean is more obvious in her youth, but Aaron’s still her own personal carbon copy.
You relax into her arms, your daughter squished between your bodies. “Hi, Mom.” On the first inhale, the smell of her detergent washes over you and tears spring into your eyes again. “I miss you.”
She laughs, leaning back to place one hand on your cheek and the other on your daughter’s shoulder. “I miss you, too. How are those girls? And my sweet boys?”
The thought of your family makes you smile and you attempt to push away the fear of leaving them…
Of leaving Aaron a widower again…
Stop.
“They’re perfect.”
Haley huffs from beside you. “Ev, can you please tell someone stubborn that dying isn’t an option here? At least, not right now?”
Evelyn smiles at you. “You’re not going to die, sweetheart. This is just a stopover point so you’re not alone. Aaron had one too, when he was in surgery a few years ago.”
“He told me,” you say, feeling a little more confident. “He told me he talked to Haley.”
“Yeah and I reminded him it’s a good idea to pull his head out of his ass every once in a while.”
You look over at her. “Thanks for that.”
She snorts. “I thought he’d never ask you. It was the least I could do.”
+++
Eventually, you end up on the back porch, sitting in the lawn chairs with the other Hotchner women. Time seems to move differently here, the golden light of the evening hours stretches far beyond what you’re used to, but it's nice. It’s not cold, not too warm, just comfortable.
You hear the gate open and a familiar voice calls, “I thought I might find you here.”
Standing, still keeping your little girl on your hip, you embrace Jenny with your free arm.
Her smile is just as bright and warm as the first day you met her. Your daughter wiggles out of your grip and latches onto Jenny’s slacks.
“Auntie Jenny, did you bring Aunt Shannon with you?”
She shakes her head. “Not today, sweetie. Today is for your momma.”
You take a seat on the arm of Haley’s chair and she snags her finger into your belt loop and says, “It’s almost time to go back.”
You look back at her, a kind of forlorn feeling creeping up in your chest. “Can you come with me?”
With a rueful little smile, she shakes her head. “No. But, I can show you something.”
A screen sort of comes from nowhere, propped like a drive-in movie on the other side of the yard. Foyet’s there, manning the projector. You squint at him and he shoots you a salute and blows Haley a kiss. She catches it with a smile and a fond shake of her head.
By way of explanation, Haley says, “Things are a little different here. If they weren’t different here, they’d be different there.” She points at the screen and you redirect your attention.
Time moves a little differently, but you learn that you’re watching your life unfold as if Haley hadn’t died, as if the most pivotal moment in your life with Aaron hadn’t happened at all.
You see years pass by on the screen - Foyet is eventually caught and killed (by Derek - a surprise). Haley and Jack come home.
Aaron and Haley come to an understanding, and you make up the tripod in their odd little fitful family unit. Aaron moves back into the big house on the river - he’s never there anyways and he sleeps in the room that used to be his office when he is home.
Emily actually dies. That one is another, rather more unpleasant, surprise.
When you look at Haley, she tells you, “Where there is death, there will always be death, eventually. It balances out, one way or another.”
With Haley in the picture, Aaron isn’t as fearless in love as he learned to be with you, doesn’t have as much perspective. He’s riddled with self-doubt and addled with fears of disappointing her, of disappointing you.
You and Aaron dance around each other for years and years and years - it’s almost 2015 before he kisses you for the first time, almost another two years before he finally asks you out, another one before you get married, another one before you have your first child.
Upon seeing him, you can tell he’s not Isaac. He’s a different boy, one that looks more like Aaron than you, who’s remarkably neurotypical, loud, and much scrappier than Isaac.
Jack doesn’t call you ‘Mom’ and you’re not as close.
Things are...wrong.
Well, maybe not wrong, but they aren’t the same. Even with the added joy of having Haley in your lives after the fear and uncertainty, you’re acutely aware that this is the timeline that was warped in some way or another. Everything feels delayed or just off.
You never have the twins or move into the Woodbridge house. Aaron doesn’t close the gap with Sean, who overdoses after a tumultuous battle with his addictions and demons.
There’s a kind of smallness to that life that you don’t have in yours.
The images fade, leaving the blank screen, after what seems like an eternity spent experiencing an alternate reality that you might have wished for if you didn’t know any better.
Haley tugs on your belt loop. “See? Couldn’t stay, can’t go back. The life you have is the best one that exists. And,” she adds with another little wry smile, “the only one you’ve got.”
Jenny places her hand on your shoulder, your daughter still stuck to her leg like glue. “You’re not done yet.”
“And,” Haley adds, “you have another surprise coming next year - around August.”
At your squint, she continues with a little smile.
“I’m not going to tell you, so you’ll have to stick around and find out.” She winks. “Thank me later.”
When she stands, you follow Haley to the front porch. The rest follow behind you like a little band of ducklings. Even Foyet, who could be an unwelcome interloper, seems like a member of the family. Evelyn passes him a glass of iced tea when she settles in the doorway.
It’s kind of funny, if you’re honest.
“Aaron and Jack will be there when you wake up. Jessica has the little ones at home.” Haley holds your hands as she speaks, swinging them back and forth a little. “You’re…” She sighs, “really hurt. Like, really really hurt. You’re gonna be out of work for a little while, and your lung capacity will be pretty fucked...forever. You’ll be able to do everything, but you’ll need to take more breaks than you’re used to.”
Your lower lip disappears into your mouth. “How’s Aaron?”
“Terrified.”
+++
Aaron sits by your bedside holding your hand, watches the way your chest mechanically rises and falls with the ventilator. They intubated you right away to give your lung the space it needed to heal, but all he wanted was to hear your voice before they put you under, just one more time.
It’s been a wretched three days. Your surgery seemed to stretch on forever, digging the bullet out of your chest, repairing the gunshot wound that shattered four ribs and perforated your left lung in six places.
After surgery, you coded after your lung collapsed again due to a pulmonary embolism. That little incident sent you right back to surgery and Aaron’s blood pressure to the stratosphere.
Since then, you’ve been stable, quiet, and, in the doctor’s words, “lucky to be alive.”
He can still feel the blood you coughed up running over his fingers and landing on his face, the shallow heaving of your breath under his hands.
Images of Haley and Kate and Emily flashed before his eyes as he tried to hold you together - horrible, horrible reminders.
Would he lose you in the field, like Emily?
Would he lose you in surgery, like Kate?
Would he be too late, like Haley?
Selfishly, the thought of playing the part of a single parent to four young children scared the hell out of him. The twins were hardly two and a half, Isaac almost five. Jack…
He really hoped he wouldn’t have to hold Jack’s hand as he delivered another eulogy for another person he called ‘Mom.’
If he was a single parent again, he would be tasked with raising three more children who wouldn’t know their mother - wouldn’t remember you after some time.
Just like Jack with Haley.
He was terrified of becoming a shell of a man without you, leaving his children practically orphaned overnight.
Sitting in the waiting room during your first surgery, he decided that he’d quit. He’d take whatever the bureau offered and quit for the sake of his children, for the sake of Jack and Isaac and Caroline and Sophia. He wouldn’t let them lose another parent to the field, to the relentless pursuit of evil.
Now, beside you, he holds your hand and talks to you as much as he can, knowing all the while you can’t hear him.
+++
“I love him, Haley.”
She grins at you while Foyet rolls his eyes. “I know you do.” Pausing as if to think for a moment, she adds, “When you wake up, don’t panic. You’re intubated. It’s...” Her head wavers back and forth a little as she searches for words. “...Unnerving. And uncomfortable. But you’re tough.”
She kisses your cheek, Evelyn and Jenny give you a hug, and Foyet kisses your hand.
“Say hi to big man Aaron for me, will ya?” He asks.
You snort and shake your head. “Gimme a break.”
He shrugs. “Worth a shot.”
+++
Your eyes snap open and you see the ceiling before anything else. Remembering what Haley said, you try to ignore the deeply uncomfortable pressure in your throat, chest, and mouth as you squeeze Aaron’s hand. Jack’s asleep, his long legs curled up like a little spider in the little corner chair.
Aaron meets your eyes and immediately reaches for the call button, assuring you, “You’re alright. You’re intubated, honey. Don’t try to talk. Just a second, I promise.”
The nurse arrives and takes care of your ventilator. You take it like a champ, mostly to avoid scaring Aaron any further. Your voice is raspy and worn when you speak.
“Hey.”
He takes a shaky breath. “You scared the hell out of me.”
A little chuckle leaves you and you cough once. It hurts. “Did you think you could get rid of me that easily?”
“That easily,” he scoffs, reaching for a lidded cup of water with a straw. “Your left lung practically exploded. You think that’s easy?”
You take the cup of water, pulling small sips. It instantly soothes your throat and you latently realize you have a feeding tube winding its way up your nose and down your throat.
That’s a problem for another time.
“Easy enough. You were stabbed multiple times - I hardly think one-upmanship is useful here.”
Your humor has the intended effect. His shoulders relax and he leans over, pressing a kiss to your forehead.
“Before you ask,” you tell him, “I feel like hell.”
“Yeah I bet.” There’s a little laugh in it.
“I saw Haley, though. And our little girl. She’s almost six now.”
Aaron perches on the edge of your bed, still holding your hand. “Tell me about her.”
You do, as best you can remember. Things are disappearing from your memory, but you cling to the important bits. You tell him what you saw, how life would be different if Haley had lived, the way you two talked about him, the way his daughter fits seamlessly into the lives of those they’ve lost.
“So she’s alright.”
You nod. “She’s perfect. Haley’s taking excellent care of her, of course.”
“Only fair,” he says.
“My thoughts exactly.”
+++
You’re in and out of sleep, but eventually, they remove the feeding tube and let you sit up to eat some bland pasta with some juice. It’s the best meal you’ve had in what feels like years.
Jack sits on your good side, tucked under your arm and drinking all your cranberry juice and showing you the new games Dave got him on his Nintendo DS. The girls sit at your feet, playing with some blocks Aaron brought them. They’re attempting to stack them on your shins to no avail.
Isaac’s sleeping against your chest. It hurts to breathe with him there, but you don’t want him anywhere else.
It’s Aaron’s turn to sleep. He’s got untouched files on the little table beside the chair, just as he usually does. Maybe one day he’ll give up trying to pretend to do work with one of the team hospitalized.
Haley’s right. This is the life you’re supposed to have.

Purple Patches
Benedict Cumberbatch x Teen!Co-Star!Reader, Tom Holland x Teen!Co-star!Reader
Genre: Angst, fluffy ending
Description: Filming the newest Dr. Strange movie (in which Tom would also appear), you grow quite close with the two leads, Tom and Benedict. But you’re hiding something alarming from them. Four months in the entire crew get a week off to see their families for Christmas, and when you return Tom and Benedict can’t help but feel troubled, as your body is rippled with purple patches.
Warnings: CHILD ABUSE, physical abuse, broken family, alcoholism, depression, anxiety??
A/N: I had another imagine written but im ngl its kind of.. weird? its unconventional for sure. and its definitely bad. so, maybe ill rewrite someday or something? ALSO SORRY IF YOU DONT CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS, JUST IMAGINE YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF EVIL CHRISTIAN STEP DAD WHO FORCES IT INTO YOUR FAMILY
Tumblr media
The taxi you sat in drove slowly in the New York traffic, as snow fell outside, coating the entire city in blinding white. You couldn’t enjoy it however. Your entire body hurt, and yet you still couldn’t find even a moment to worry about your health. All you could think about was them.
Tom and Benedict. Your sweetest coworkers, and at this point your closest.. anything. Family, friends? Who cares, you had no one else. You’d gone back for the holidays like everyone else, even though you wished you could have just stayed at in your trailer. Your dad, like any other time you saw him, had used this time to pour his anger and alcoholism out on you. Your body which had finally begun to heal, was now back to square one, covered in cuts and bruises.
You knew what would happen if anyone found out. You’d be taken from your family. But in truth, although you hated being around him, you wanted to wait for your dad. You wanted to wait for him to get over his alcoholism, you wanted him to get better, and then he’d treat you better.
But they would find out. You were covered in bruises and purple patches. Your face was fine, except for your neck, but the rest of your body was ruined. Ugly. You could hide most of it, but it hurt. Even just sitting there, in the soft and plush taxi seat, you body was aching and wailing like a police siren.
And what if they noticed you foundation-covered hands? Or the movie required you to wear something more revealing?
“You okay?” the deep voice of your taxi driver ripped you from your thoughts. A single tear had slid down your face. You cleared your throat and nodded, wiping the tear from your cheek.
You arrived at the set, and an impossible knot had been tied in your stomach. Nervousness tingled in your heart and your legs, but you got up anyway, trying to calm your breath. The moment you stood up, you winced and stopped.
You managed to roll your luggage to your trailer, biting your lip continuously in order to keep yourself from screaming. You threw it on the floor of your trailer, whimpering and doubling over in pain.
“Y/n!” a rapid knock on your door, interrupted you. It was Tom’s voice. You took a shaky breath, closing your eyes, and then opening the door. Tom stood there in your doorway like a smiling idiot. Your lips widened into a smile just from seeing him.
“Y/n!” he repeated stepping inside and wrapping his arms around you in a hug. You bit your lip again, hiding your pain-wrenched face in his chest, before hugging him back. He placed his head on yours sweetly. “I missed you!” he gushed.
You hit his chest playfully, “I missed you too,” you frowned for a moment and looked away. Tom’s eyebrows furrowed.
“Are you okay?” You simply nodded. Tom stared at you for a moment and then shook his head. “Anyway, um, Benedict asked me to tell you that he’s invited both of us youngsters out for dinner tonight. Just as one last ‘fuck you!’ to work, before officially start back up tomorrow.”
“That does sound like something he would do,” you agreed and Tom laughed, punching your shoulder playfully. You yelped loudly, retreating quickly from him.
“Woah,” he exclaimed, holding his hands up, “Are you okay? What happened to your shoulder?”
“I fell,” you said. Nervousness jabbed at your ribs. You’d barely talked to Tom for a minute and he’d already asked if you were okay twice. He seemed to buy your explanation, and apologized for accidentally hitting your sore shoulder, to which you nodded absently.
Tom was silent for a couple of heartbeats. He studied you. You were not usually like this. Or maybe you had been a little like this those four months ago, when you first started filming. He didn’t understand what caused you to be that way, so distant and unhappy.
“Hey, anyway, I’m gonna go, I’m trying to actually read the script this time,” he joked, and you laughed because you knew it was a hopeless task.
“Have fun,” you mumbled, and as soon he left, you body slid down against the wall, and your facade crumbled, tears leaving your eyes.
___________________________
Before the dinner, you took three pain killers. Then, you waited restlessly, hoping that the pills might kick in. They did but your body felt strange and buzzy. You ignored it, a blossoming hope forming in your chest that you might be able to conceal your pain in the pills and the clothing.
Benedict came knocking on your door around 7, a smile on his face. “Y/n!” he said, and you both hugged. A small smile had formed on your lips, when you actually managed to deal with the ache, now much weaker than previously.
You both then walked to Tom’s trailer, and then the three of you walked to a restaurant, not too far from your filming location.
“So, what have you two been up to in our little break?” Benedict asked once you all sat down, having ordered already. You glanced at Tom, hoping that he’d start.
“Me and my brothers went back home to our mum and dad. Had a pretty regular Christmas. I gave the best gifts. I got some pretty cool socks,” Tom joked around. You and Benedict stifled a laugh. Then both Ben and Tom looked at you, and you realized it was your turn to tell them about what you’d been up to.
“Oh, well, I.. I spent Christmas with my parents. My grandparents and cousins also came,” you were lying through your teeth. You avoided their eyes, sipping your soda.
“Got any presents?” Benedict asked and you cursed at yourself internally for forgetting such a simple part of Christmas. And for making things awkward.
“I got some clothes, some books. Pretty standard stuff,” you forced a smile, “What about you, Benadryl?”
Benedict rolled his eyes at your comment, making you and Tom fist-bump one another, giggling quietly as he told you about his own Christmas. The night was going alright, except for that rough start. Mostly you avoided any talk of your family, and you could feel yourself getting better, the further the conversation got from your family. Until-
“Y/n, what’s that on your hand?”
Instinctively, you pulled your hand to your lap, straightening yourself up and gulping. You looked down, pretending to inspect it and then looked up.
“It’s, uh, it’s dirt. Wow, I should really go wash my hands, haha-” Tom grabbed your hand from under the table, pulling it towards him. Your foundation was wearing off, a large purple patch stemming from your wrist and snaking up your hand revealing itself.
You couldn’t breathe. Both Tom and Ben just stared at it. You tried to pull back but Tom was much stronger than you. Tears blurred your vision.
“Y/n, what is this?” Tom whispered, and you felt his fingers rubbing the bruise gently. The tears finally fell, and now both men were looking at you. Benedict looked serious. It was an expression you’d never really seen on his features before, at least not outside of your acting.
“I-I fell..” you mumbled, but you knew it was useless.
“Y/n.. Who did this?” Benedict’s voice was low, gently setting a hand on your shoulder. You flinched.
“I don’t know.. I don’t..”
“Y/n!” Tom’s voice was raised. You immediately jumped away from them both, putting your arms in front of you in fear. Several people turned to look at you three. Shaking, you lowered your hands, and saw Tom and Ben staring at you worriedly. Tom had tears in his eyes.
“Let’s talk about this back at the studio, okay?” Benedict, now afraid to touch you, spoke slowly and comfortingly. You nodded and then two men got up, standing on either side of you, grabbing one of your hands each.
“Was it your dad?” Tom growled as you walked in the night, moon rising in the sky.
“Yes..” you whispered, so low you wondered if they heard it, but they did. They both exchanged glances. Tom was furious. Benedict was too, but he was collected. Tom itched to ask you more and help you, console you right there on the street, but Benedict sent him a warning look not to.
You walked back to the studio in silence. The three of you entered your trailer and you quietly wished you had predicted something like this would happen, because the bottle of strong pain killers was still out and open on your kitchen table.
Benedict spotted them immediately and grabbed them. His eyes narrowed as he read the bottle description. Then he looked at you and then it again. Tom watched helplessly, holding your shoulders gently.
“How many more are there? Bruises.” Ben was clearly angry. He was losing his cool, hands shaking as he grabbed your hand to pull up your sleeve. You tried to move his hand away, but he slid the sleeve up to your elbow and just stared at the blue, yellow and purple that littered your arm. Tom was frozen beside you.
Ben slid up your other sleeve, breathing speeding up as he saw more, and then he tugged at the collar of your turtleneck, exposing the jarring and ugly sight of a red handprint. He pulled away suddenly, walking away from you.
“Fuck!” he yelled, hitting the wall of the trailer. He hung his head low. You jumped and turned around, but Tom simply embraced you, and then sat you both down on the floor. You hid your face in his neck, sobbing again. Tom’s hands slowly rubbed your back.
“Okay..” said Benedict after a while. You could hear that he’d calmed down. Ben angrily wiped a few tears from his face, turning to you and Tom on the floor. Tom was simply frowning now. He never wanted to let you go. He never wanted any harm to come to you.
“I’m gonna call the police and get your dad arrested,” he said, and you heard his footsteps, as he wondered what to do next.
“No!” you exclaimed, scrambling to your feet away from Tom. Both men looked at you in confusion. “No! You can’t do that, he’s- he’s just trying to get better. If I wait a little longer, he’s going to get better.”
“Y/n..” Benedict whispered sadly and you ran to him hoping to stop him. “You can’t wait for him. You’re putting yourself in danger..” you shook your head, but Ben grabbed your shoulders and looked into your eyes, “he’s a grown man, Y/n. He doesn’t deserve pity or patience. Not after doing this. Nothing excuses this. Nothing.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat, lip quivering, but still you nodded.
“Can your mother take care of you?” Ben asked, piercing blue eyes still staring into your soul. There was no point in lying anymore, you knew.
“No.”
“Alright, then you’ll stay with me.” Ben declared, “You’ll stay with me until we can find someone from your family who can take care of you.” You looked up at him with shining eyes. Despite the uncomfortable situation you found yourself in, a genuine smile broke out on your face.
You hugged him, thanking him breathlessly. Ben and Tom made eye contact, and smiled gently at each other. Tom had cried silently at your interaction. The thought that someone would hurt someone he loved so dearly shattered his heart completely.
“Now,” Benedict said finally, “we need to drive you to the hospital.”
You agreed and while Tom drove, Ben was in the backseat on the phone with the police department. You just watched the beautiful neon lights shining in the pitch black night, snow illuminating the ground. People still littered the streets.
You knew it now. Your father didn’t deserve your waiting, and though it would take very long to finally live with and truly understand, it was worth it to start the fight. You truly owed it to the two jerks you worked with. What would you even do with out them?

You know how we have pet costumes? Give Jacob one, make him a cute space cowboy😈😈😈
WE'RE BACK BABY
Please enjoy this little ficlet (that was actually my 3rd attempt to write a fluffy ficlet for this universe because all the other ones kept becoming future chapters lmao)
--
“This is humiliating. I look like sheriff Woody or something.”
“Aw, I was thinking more like John Wayne Gacy, you know?”
“The...the clown serial killer…?”
Angie pursed her lips. “Wait, who was the cowboy guy in all the old movies? Like, before Clint Eastwood and whatever.”
“That’s John Wayne. Not John Wayne Gacy,” Jacob tugged at the sleeves of his costume and readjusted his cowhide vest. “And I don’t feel anywhere near as cool as him right now.”
She rolled her eyes and crinkled her nose. “That’s because you’re not cool. You’re a grown man playing dress up with a kindergartener.”
“So are you.”
Angie straightened her Native American headpiece and threw one of her braided pigtails behind her. “Yeah, but I know it’s stupid, so therefore I’m doing it ironically which makes me cool.”
Jacob sighed heavily but didn’t argue further, instead tugging his cowboy hat down further to shield his face that burned with embarrassment. Being forced into having playdates with his captor’s coworker was nothing new. He had spent plenty of time being Mibao’s sole playmate aboard the ship, doing the best he could to keep the six year girl entertained and not too psychologically damaged. Being the youngest in a sibling group of only boys, he was a bit rusty when it came to knowing anything about kids. Thankfully, Mibao was more than happy to take him by the hand and show up all the “fun” things she used to either do back home or what she would now do with her “kitty”.
Today’s game of choice was dress up. Every day felt like dress up when it came to the girl’s ever expanding wardrobe; she was always dressed in an obnoxiously puffy and sparkling princess dress fashioned with ribbons and bows galore and always with a matching crown. Fine, no big deal, he could slap a tiara on his head and call it a day, he’d worn worse at the few fraternity parties he attended during college. Nope, not good enough. Mibao had a very specific game she wanted to play which involved him wearing a cowboy costume of all things. A very realistic and detailed cowboy costume, assless chaps and spurs and all. Again, he could...handle it for the most part. The only thing that really bothered him about it was all the coos and giggles he received from both his and Mibao’s captors when he finally came out in his new outfit.
And he knew for a fact they took many, many pictures of him.
It didn’t end there, Mibao still had more requests. Angie needed to join in as well and she was required to be an “indian princess” to partake. Naturally, she was more than happy to agree if it meant getting a break from the absolute nightmare of a captor she had been saddled with. So, now Jacob had to deal with the fact that she would have to watch him play pretend in this ridiculous getup. He could never catch a break with her, it seemed, she always had to catch him when he was in the middle of doing something cringe worthy. She didn’t even look half as uncomfortable as him and she was literally wearing half as much clothing.
Or maybe that was exactly why she was so comfortable as she sauntered up to him, making a finger pistol to tip his hat away from his face. “Cheer up, partner,” she teased. “I think it makes you look cute.”
“I think it makes me look like Owen Wilson from the museum movie,” Jacob replied, hoping the shadow of the brim hid his reddening cheeks.
“Oh my God, you are a tiny little twink cowboy, huh?”
“I’d rather be the gladiator guy.”
“You wish you could pull off being the gladiator guy.”
A rebuttal was on the tip of his tongue when Mibao made her appearance from behind the monitor where she had been changing. This time instead of her usual princess attire, she was dressed...pretty much the same, only this time she had a tiny pair or iridescent fairy wings attached to the back. What a fairy had to do with cowboys and indians, he hadn’t the faintest idea. She stopped when she saw the two of them and stuck out her tongue in childish disgust.
“Eww, stop kissing!” She scolded. “You can kiss the princess later, Jake, it’s time to play!”
Jacob had never been more grateful in his life that the creatures idly watching them couldn’t understand English because he just might have died if they heard. He could feel the heat radiating from his nape to his cheeks, putting his hands up in defense like it could keep Angie away from him.
“Wh-no! We weren’t, we weren’t kissing, Reagan, w-we-!”
Angie only cackled, her amusement stemming more from Jacob’s panicked response than the actual accusation of giving him a kiss. “Yeah, cowboy, you can kiss me later.” She winked and nudged him with her elbow as she walked past to where Mibao was waiting.
He groaned, tugging the hat down as far as it would go even if that meant obscuring his vision somewhat. That was totally fine, he didn’t want to look at anyone right now and he did not want to be perceived either. The child was leading them back over to her designated play area scattered with art supplies and stuffed toys for where they’ll play their game of make believe. Angie was already sitting on her knees by the time he shuffled over and beckoned him with a sly smile to come take a seat on the ground next to her. Jacob obliged, but refused to give her the satisfaction of seeing his beet red face.
As soon as they were settled, Mibao immediately launched into the exposition of the scene they would be putting on, including their roles and superpowers (that only she had because she was a magical fairy queen). Jacob was only half listening; the kid usually forgot half of her own rules in the middle of playing anyways because she wanted to change the story and it wasn’t that hard to follow her game of make believe. Instead, he kept side-eying Angie, who was side-eying him back, and every time they made eye contact she would smile and bump his shoulder with hers.
This was going to be a long playdate.
--
The lab door slid open as Talan walked in, peeling off his bloodied gloves to dispose of them in Ylva’s waste bin. “I need my human back.”
“Aw, why? They’re all having a ball together!” Ylva frowned, gesturing to the miniature trio on her desk. Well, the smallest one and Talan’s pet seemed like they were having a good time, namely at the expense of the other human in a hat. They all seemed to stop at the interruption, his human fixing him with a sneer that he was tempted to match.
“What the fuck is it wearing?” He asked, ignoring all the little protests he got when he grabbed it and plucked the stupid looking feather thing of its head. “I thought you said it’s not nice to torment the humans.”
Edix scoffed at him, though his annoyance was more from Talan being in his general vicinity than anything. “It’s not torment. They were having fun.”
Talan did not look convinced in the slightest, his eyes sweeping over the pup who was pouting at him for taking away its playmate and the other who froze any time he breathed in its direction. Like owner, like pet, he assumed as it seemed to unconsciously inch closer to where Edix’s hand was resting for a better sense of security. Pathetic. At least his pet had a bit more self respect and wasn’t afraid to try and stab him in the hand with his own tools. Of course, it got a sharp flick to the stomach to knock it off, but he could appreciate the gumption.
Talan rolled his eyes. “Yeah, looks like a real party. So sad to have missed it.”
“Like you’ve ever been to a party to know what it looks like.”
“Says the one that only hangs out with plants.”
“Okay,” Ylva interjected, rising from her chair and scooping up her adorable little human. “You’re right, we should probably wrap this up, Mibao’s going to need a nap soon and she likes to fight her naps when she’s excited.”
That was all the excuse Talan needed to dip out without a formal goodbye, though it didn’t escape the corner of his eye how Edix’s human took a half step forward when he left, almost like it wanted to say something. Even if it did, he wouldn’t have cared. As quickly as he had intruded, Talan disappeared back down the main hall of the fauna department to return to his lab.
Edix stood up as well and tucked the data pad he had been keeping busy with under his arm to keep his hands free. He couldn’t help but smile at seeing how much closer his little pet was standing to him, even if it wasn’t by much, even though it was caused by Talan of all bastards. A win was a win in his book. The hand the human had been partly hiding behind curled easily around it to lift it up, immediately cradling it to his chest as usual. It squirmed for a moment but settled quick enough, a clear sign it was also ready to go back to the lab it was accustomed to. For a social species, the little one always seemed so drained after any playdate Ylva arranged for their pets. Fine by him, it usually meant his human was much more quiet and well behaved once it was back in the solitude of Edix’s company, making for an easier work day.
He used his finger to tilt back the wide brimmed hat it had been using to hide its sweet little face a majority of the playdate, earning him a surprised squeak. With the way its baby cheeks were turning an adorable shade of pink, Edix had a fairly good guess as to why it was trying to avoid everyone’s line of sight. Damn, he should have had Ylva take more pictures, this was way too cute for him. It reached up to quickly pull its shield back down and Edix let it with a laugh, cooing as he tugged at its little vest instead which only made it wriggle in distress. Overdramatic little thing.
“Can I keep this costume?” He asked as he followed behind Ylva who was preparing to put her own pup down for a nap. In reality, it meant she was going to have to play with it for at least another half an hour because, much like him, she was a sucker when it came to her human wanting to play. The difference being that Mibao wanted to do anything from coloring to singing to continuing its game of make believe while Edix’s pet always wanted to play chase.
Ylva smiled and shrugged. “Sure, I mean, it’s not like it’s going to fit the baby. It was printed for its measurements specifically, anyways.” Mibao was proving to be difficult in its refusal to relinquish the shiny wings Ylva had designed at its request, something that Ylva quickly made a game out of by setting her pup on the desk and letting it squeal and run while her hands chased after it. That would tire the kid out in no time. She looked back at his human and giggled. “I don’t think it likes it very much, though.”
Oh yeah, that was obvious from the get go, but it didn’t change the fact that it was way too precious for its own good in this type of outfit. Edix actually quite liked the contrast of the dark brown against its pale skin, even more given the fact that it matched the color of its doe eyes perfectly. It was much more appealing than that splotchy green jacket it was inexplicably attached to. He had a feeling it was going to try and strip out of this outfit as soon as it was back in Edix’s lab, provided he gave it its normal suit and jacket to change into. But...maybe he didn’t have to offer it its spare set of clothes right away. Maybe it would just have to hang around in its little boots and hat for a couple hours longer while he finished up his latest report that was just so important to get done. And maybe he would get constantly distracted by how cute it looked while it was definitely pouting at him for not taking off its costume that it took a little longer than usual to finish his work, which meant it spent even longer pouting under its hat.
Decisions, decisions.
Edix waved his hand dismissively. “It’ll learn to love it.”
“Oh, Eddie, don’t be mean to it,” Ylva laughed, not that seemed bothered by the idea of his pet keeping the outfit on for an extended period of time beyond the playdate. “But send pictures if you do.”

Learning to Be Loved
Chapter 3
Tumblr media
It was now becoming the end of summer, which almost time for school to start. You didn’t want to go back to the school you went to last year. You were fairly advanced when it came to your other classmates, especially in STEM related classes plus they were your favorite topics. Peter found out that you loved those types of classes, he wanted you to come to school with him.
Another thing that has happened in the past few months since living with the Avengers is that you’ve broken out of your shell. You were now the person you always hoped you could be surrounded by the family you had always dreamed of. There were still some bridges to be crossed but you were improving daily and the Avengers were very patient with you.
“Y/N you have a guest at the downstairs entrance.” JARVIS announced. You squealed and ran as fast as you could to greet Peter. “Peter!” You yelled and jumped into his arms.
“Hey Y/N/N!” He said hugging you back just as hard and kissed your cheek. He set you down, “What’s everyone up to today?”
“Wanda, Sam, Vision, and Rhodey are on a mission. Tony and Pepper are on a business call and Steve and Bucky are out training, so I’ve been bored. Wanna build a blanket fort and watch movies?” You asked bouncing on the balls of your feet with excitement.
When the Avengers went on missions together or in groups, you were worried the entire time they were gone. You finally had a family and didn’t want to loose any of them. There was a part of you that completely understood why they had to go on missions and you were incredibly proud of them for doing something that brave and knowing that they were helping people. You tried to keep yourself busy so you wouldn’t think about it too much.
“That sounds amazing!” Peter said, “Race ya!” Peter suddenly took off giving him the advantage.
“Peter, no fair!” You giggled running after him to try and beat him to the living room. The two of you were giggling as Peter would slow down to help you catch up but when you were close he would speed up again. When the two of you finally made it to the living room, Peter won by just a hair.
“I win.” Peter sang which caused you to poke his tummy. He gasped and curled away from your finger. “Is that a game you want to start now there Y/N?” Peter started to poke your tummy in retaliation which made you giggle slightly.
“Nohoho.”
“You wanna grab the blankets for the fort? The more you grab the bigger it can be.” You grinned and rushed off to the closet that held all of the blankets, you grabbed as many as you could carry while still somewhat seeing where you were going. You got back to the living room Peter had moved some of the furniture around to clear a spot for the epic fort you were going to make.
“Let’s get started.” Peter rubbed his hands together rapidly, something he did when he was excited about something.
After an hour, you and Peter made the most epic blanket fort in the history of blanket forts. You had the TV set up on the ground, also doubling the use and making it one of the walls of the fort. You also brought some of the extra string lights from your room down and strung them along the ceiling. It was also loaded up with some of the extra blankets you didn’t use and all of the pillows that were from the couches. It also was stocked full of all the appropriate movie marathon snacks.
“What movie should we start with?” Peter asked you.
You shrugged. You didn’t want to accidentally pick a movie that Peter didn’t like and make him want to sit through the whole thing. “Whatever you want to watch is fine.” It also helped you were pretty easy to please when it came to movies, as long as it wasn’t a horror movie or super graphic.
“Are the Lion King movies okay?” You nodded with a smile. You both made yourselves comfortable while also each grabbing a snack. Halfway through the movie Peter spoke up.
“Y/N,” you turned your head to look at him letting him know he had your full attention, “do you wanna cuddle?” Your face all of a sudden got very warm and you avoided his eyes. You slightly nodded and Peter opened his arms, “Well come here then Cuddlebug.” You eagerly crawled into his arms.
While you have broke out of your shell in the last few months, you were still struggling with asking for certain types of affection. You had no issues giving hugs to people, but you were still too nervous to ask for cuddles or kiss someone one the cheek. The Avengers gave you the nickname of Cuddlebug because cuddles were one of your favorite things on the planet.
“Thanks for keeping me company Peter.” You whispered. He drew you closer to him while giving you a chaste kiss on the forehead.
“Of course. You’re one of my best friends Y/N, I love hanging out with you.”
Another thing that all the Avengers have learned about you appreciated words. Growing up you were never told that someone was proud of you, that someone cared about you, or even that someone loved you. Since the Avengers knew a little background of your previous life they tried their best to always tell you what they thought of you.
“I like hanging out with me too.” You teased, even though you had a rough past you still understood sarcasm, which was also something that came to life recently.
“Oh look, it’s miss sassy pants, guess I will have to fix that.” He rolled you onto your back and he laid on your side, crossing his over and under yours pinning you into place, and then he started to squeeze your hips. You burst into giggles trying to twist away but Peter’s legs had you stuck in place.
“Peheheheter!”
“Oh can miss sassy pants not take some tickles? Well that’s too bad, I have to tickle all of the sass out of you.” Peter sang now bringing his horribly quick fingers up to your armpits making you Tickle Me Elmo giggles burst out.
“Looks like miss sassy pants has turned into Tickle Me Elmo, how cute.” Peter chuckled, “Maybe this spot will make you loose all your sass.” He then moved down to your ribs, he hit a particularly overly sensitive spot. It was at the bottom of your ribs but on the backside of your rib cage. You were so shocked at this new feeling that you didn’t even try to squirm it was like you were paralyzed with laughter.
You were trying to tap out or do something to get him to stop, then thankfully he decided to have mercy on you.
“I’m definitely going to remember that spot.” He squeezed it quick again eliciting a squeal from you. “But it’s not as good as this one.” He jellyfished the knee closest to him and you quickly grabbed his hand and wove his fingers between yours so he didn’t get carried away and tickle you longer than you could handle. “I’m done I promise.”
“I like hanging out with you too Peter.” You told him once you finally caught your breath and the both of you got more comfortable and finished your Lion King movie marathon.
———————
It was the first day at Peter’s new school and it would be a lie if you didn’t say you were nervous. You were about to go to school with a bunch of genius kids and a new school, but you were thankful to have Peter by your side.
You were standing outside the building looking at the front doors, “Ready?” Peter said grabbing your hand.
You let out a breath you didn’t even know that you were holding. “Is it weird that I’m nervous?”
“No but I’m going to be with you in class all day. Mr. Stark made a call apparently.” He smiled and you felt so touched that Tony would go out of his way to make sure that you were comfortable and with Peter all day. Peter tugged your hand and you followed him into school.
You felt a lot of eyes on you making you feel really small and uncomfortable. Peter just simply squeezed your hand letting you know that he was there and walked into your first classroom.
You were a little surprised to find a few round tables in the room instead of a bunch of desks. Peter walked over to a table with a few people and sat down, you immediately followed so you wouldn’t have to sit a table where you didn’t know anyone.
“Y/N, these are my friends Ned and MJ. Guys, this is Y/N.” Peter told you while pointing to a girl with curly black hair and the guy who couldn’t stop smiling with no hair.
“So you’re the Y/N Peter has told us about.” You suddenly got really nervous, what had Peter said about you, good things or bad things, that fear of suddenly loose your closest and first friend made it’s way to the pit of your stomach. Peter started to notice your tense state and simply placed his hand on top of yours.
“Hey, I’ve only told them good things. I told them that I made another best friend over the summer named Y/N and that she was super fun to hang out with.”
You smiled appreciatively at him, “Why aren’t there desks?” Peter chuckled at your question but you didn’t feel stupid or insecure at his response.
“It’s supposed to help with learning. We are all facing each other and the teachers have structured their teaching so we can work more in groups and go back and forth with each other, rather than just sit and listen to them talk all the time. Not all the teachers have it but it’s becoming more common throughout the school.”
That made you nervous and a little more excited about school. You were always such a hands on learner but you didn’t really know anyone yet so you were even more thankful that you were in class with Peter and that Tony made a call to the school.
Finally, lunch time came around and you were the first one to sit at the table Peter told you he sat at. You felt a presence sit next to you and you turned to look expecting to find Peter but instead you were looking a boy you’ve never seen before. He was wearing a letterman jacket and he was kind of handsome as well.
“Hi, I’m Brad. What’s your name?”
“Y/N.” Then all of a sudden a large group of guys in letterman jackets sat around you.
“Well Y/N welcome to Midtown High. Where’d you move from?” He was obviously trying to get to know you for some reason and you just wanted to leave but you also didn’t want to be rude.
“I’m just here for today to see if I like it.” You said quietly not liking the pressure you felt from all of the guys around you.
“I hope you stay because...”
“Hey Y/N, wanna join MJ, Ned and I over there.” Peter interrupted Brad, you had never been so thankful to see Peter. You eagerly nodded when all of a sudden you felt a hand on your arm, trying to get you to sit back down and you knew it wasn’t Peter. “Hey Parker, she was already sitting here.”
“I know!” Peter actually looked pretty angry at Brad, “But this is where we normally sit and you didn’t have to sit here plus Y/N is my friend and she’s clearly uncomfortable, so take your hand off of her so she can come sit with her real friends.” You had never heard Peter talk like that and you made a note to never get on his bad side. Brad thankfully did what Peter said and you stood up to follow Peter to where he was sitting.
“I’m sorry about Brad. Are you okay? Did he hurt you?” Peter said as you were making your way to his table.
You shook your head, “Thank you for saving me.” You said quietly.
Peter kissed your cheek quickly and whispered in your ear, “That’s my job Y/N.” Causing you to giggle at his cheesiness and the whisper in your ear tickled a little bit too.
After lunch time was over, you went to all the other classes with Peter and enjoyed your day at the school, but when the bell rang at the end of the day you were even more happy to go home. You were never really away from the compound for that long since you’ve lived there so you missed everyone and couldn’t wait to get back home.
Peter told you he wouldn’t be coming back to the compound with you and he had to go somewhere with his aunt after school, so Happy would be picking you up. Peter did walk you out to the front door and you instantly spotted Happy’s car.
“Bye Peter, have fun with May.”
“I’ll text you later, Y/N.” He pulled you into a hug before you got in the car. Happy and you made light conversation on the way back to the compound.
“Welcome home Y/N.” JARVIS said as you walked in the front door.
“Hi JARVIS! Is Tony in the lab?”
“He’s currently working on a new model for his suit.” JARVIS told you and you ran to the lab wanting to tell Tony about your day. Once you got to the lab you saw a stool right next to him, you figured if you sat there he might even let you help him.
“Hey pipsqueak, how was school with the kid?” He turned from what he was working on and kissed your hair.
“It was fun.” You said simply kicking your legs back and forth on the stool watching in fascination on what Tony was working on.
“Yeah, so is that were you think you wanna go this year?” He set his tools down and stopped what he was doing to give you his full attention.
“No.” You said quietly suddenly getting nervous to tell Tony what you were thinking. You looked up a Tony quick and his head was cocked to the side and one of his eyebrows was raised.
“I liked the school but I’d rather learn stuff from you in the lab and help you with suits and other things.” You were suddenly snatched off the stool in a big bear hug and Tony swung you around in a circle making you laugh.
“I get to have you here all the time!” Tony screamed as he continued to spin you around. When he finally stopped spinning you felt his hands squeeze between you arms and your armpits, he started to wiggle his fingers causing one of everyone’s favorite laughter from you. Your Tickle Me Elmo giggles broke out and you started to kick you legs.
“Tohohohony!” You giggled, you couldn’t help but try to get some momentum to break free of his grasp but you also didn’t mind as you loved being tickled. Tony didn’t acknowledge your protests and started to rub his beard in the crook of you neck. Your giggles got more frantic and your kicking became a little more desperate than before. Tony kept this up for a while, he’d either rub his beard around your neck, or wiggle his fingers in your armpits or even do both at the same time.
He finally had mercy on you after a while and set you back down on your feet and he gave you a long kiss on your forehead. “I would love nothing more than to teach you everything I know. I’ve always wanted a little apprentice.”
“I’m sorry you went through all that trouble of calling the school for nothing.”
Tony waved his hand dismissively, “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for my girl. Now where should we start?”

Bestfriend!Mingyu College AU
Tumblr media
MASTERLIST
Thanks for the request @caratcakemix !!! This is my first time writing something like this so I hope I did ok!!! But I enjoyed it because I like pushing myself to do new things! There’s two more requests after this and then I’m going back to finishing the Falling Flowers series! Love you guys!!! Thanks for all the endless support and patience!
Word count: 4.3K
Warnings: (Most likely terribly written) angst (I’m so sorry, I feel like it’s so bad)
Summary: You and Mingyu had always been best friends. It’s been that way for as long as you can remember. But when the line between friendship and something more gets blurred, will you take it further or lose each other completely?
Tumblr media
“No Mingyu, I don’t feel like walking all the way over to your dorm,” you sigh, kicking off your shoes as you enter your own living space, “it’s across campus.”
“[Y/N],” his voice drags your name out in a long whine. “Pleeeeeeeease, Dokyeom went home for the weekend and you know I hate staying here by myself!”
“Your dorm is not haunted, Gyu. It’s just the old pipes making those noises.”
“What do you even know about pipes,” he grumbles before silence overtakes the conversation.
You sigh when he doesn’t say anything else, “If I stay there, will you buy me food?”
You hear rustling on the other side as Mingyu is undoubtedly fist pumping in victory, “YES! YES! I will!!!! Thank you!”
“Ok, give me a bit to shower and grab some stuff. The food had better be there when I arrive,” you hang up and throw your phone on the couch. You sigh in defeat. It’s always been annoying that Mingyu has been able to get you to do anything with hardly any effort, but for some reason, lately it’s been more frustrating than usual. The thought prompted you to zone out for a moment, your mind racing to find an explanation.
You shake your head, attempting to clear your thoughts, before finally moving from the spot where you had been standing to go get ready.
*******************************************************************************************
The strange frustration you have with Mingyu settles down in the back of your mind and doesn’t leave.
But it’s easily ignored when Mingyu opens the door of his dorm to let you in, wearing a comfy looking hoody and a bright smile, and holding a plate of wings from your favorite chicken place down the street.
You step in while lifting the plate up out of his hands. Mingyu laughs at your forwardness and follows you into the living room area.
“Are we watching movies?” you ask around the first chicken wing that’s already been shoved into your mouth. “I don’t have any homework this weekend, so I’m down to do whatever.”
Mingyu shuffles over to where you’re sitting on the couch before slumping down to lay his head in your lap, “Yeah, let’s watch that new action movie.”
“I’m tired of action movies,” you grumble.
“Well I hate all the horror movies you like watching,” he whines.
“Let’s compromise and do suspense then.”
Mingyu reluctantly agrees. However, the two of you spend the majority of your evening scrolling through movies and shoving chicken into your faces.
“Thanks for doing this, [Y/N],” Mingyu suddenly mumbles, right as you two are about to fall asleep, awkwardly crammed onto the tiny dorm couch. The annoyance pops back up to the front of your brain right before you fall asleep.
*******************************************************************************************
The next day the two of you waste time playing games, binging shows, trying to get ahead in school (not), and snacking. Mingyu keeps thanking you for staying with him.
“I guess it’s an occupational hazard when your best friend is an unbearable extrovert,” you tease. “You’re just lucky I didn’t have a date or something this weekend.”
Mingyu laughs loudly in response, “Yeah, you on a date.”
“Hey!” you say throwing a pillow at him. “I could have a date, jerk face. What do you know about my romantic life?”
“I know that you turn down every date that comes your way.”
“No, I only turn down the dates you try to set me up on because your friends are creepy.”
“Creepy is harsh,” Mingyu argues.
“I guess so... but the guy that wore fedoras all the time was creepy.”
“Ok that’s true, I should’ve seen that one coming.”
“The rest weren’t so creepy as they were just incredibly hard to get along with.”
“Maybe you’re the one that’s incredibly hard to get along with,” Mingyu teases before another pillow is thrown at him. “I’m just saying, maybe don’t be so... picky. Lower your standards and date for fun instead of trying to find your soulmate.”
You get quiet for a moment as you consider his words, “I guess you’re right. I mean I’d like to have the experience of dating in college.”
“I’m so glad you said that!” Mingyu exclaims clapping his hands and plopping down in front of you.
“Did you say all of that just to convince me to go on another date with one of your friends?” you roll your eyes.
“Maybe... But! I think you’re really going to like this one! I met him through Dokyeom. His name is Soonyoung, he’s a dance major who’s a year older than us. He’s super nice, entertaining, and is always fun to hang out with!”
You sigh and give Mingyu a look, “Ok, you know what? Fine, let’s do it.”
Mingyu is always able to get you to do whatever he wants you to, and it’s getting more and more annoying.
*******************************************************************************************
You always got nervous before the dates, although you’re not sure why. Maybe it was just restlessness over the thought of wasting a night with a guy you most likely would not call again. But this time, Mingyu’s words spun around in your mind. You were going to try this time to just go with the flow and have a little fun.
You stood outside the restaurant. It was a little fancier than your usual college student cuisine, but not so nice that you had to worry about what you were wearing. Which honestly made you sigh in relief. One of the guys Mingyu set you up with took you to a super nice restaurant for the first date and ended the night with a discussion about marriage. You’re not sure you had ever fled a date so fast.
“Hey, you’re [Y/N], right?” your attention is grabbed by a voice in front of you.
He’s tall, almost as tall as Gyu. His hair is bleach blonde and he’s got the biggest smile on his face.
“That would be me!” you return the smile. “Soonyoung, correct?”
“Correct! You ready to go inside?” he asks before gently guiding you with a hand on your lower back.
You’d be lying if you said the gesture didn’t send butterflies into your stomach. With most guys, you’d see the action as creepy at best. But something about Soonyoung felt... comfortable.
Soonyoung sits across from you at a tiny table, nervously petting his hair down, “So um, Dokyeom told me you’re a STEM major. That’s really impressive.”
You laugh a little, “If you call scrambling to finish assignments until 2AM every night and hardly knowing what I’m doing impressive, then yeah I guess so.”
“Oh come on,” he insists, “Even just getting into the STEM program at our school means you must be incredibly smart.”
“Well what about you? Being a dance major is just as difficult if I heard correctly. You just have to overwork your body instead of your brain like I do!”
Soonyoung agrees readily to the point, “That’s true, I guess college is just hard for everyone, huh?”
“Very true,” you affirm.
The conversation continues easily. Soonyoung is lovely to talk to. His jokes are all funny instead of offensive, his habits are cute instead of gross, he’s polite instead of overbearing. Soonyoung is a nice change of pace from the other guys you had been on dates with. But...
There wasn’t anything there. I mean there should be at least a little bit of romantic attraction to date someone, right? Otherwise, you’d just be leading them on.
“Hey Soonyoung,” you say towards the end of the date.
“What’s up?” he asks, his smile never fading.
“Can I ask you something that’s potentially strange to ask someone on the first date?”
Soonyoung furrows his brows for a second before nodding, his smile returning, “Ask me anything!”
“How do you feel right now... about me?”
“I feel like you’re really nice...” he laughs a little.
“No I mean like romantically... there’s...”
Soonyoung pauses for a moment, considering what you said and how to proceed with his words.
“There’s nothing right?” you finally put it out there. Soonyoung nods slightly with your words. “I mean I really like hanging out with you!”
“Me too! You’re so much fun!” he agrees.
“And this is way better than all the other dates Mingyu has set me up on.”
“You wouldn’t believe some of the stories I have from the dates Dokyeom has been setting me up with!” Soonyoung adds.
“It’s just that there’s...” you trail off.
“Nothing,” you both say together before laughing.
“And I don’t want to write this off completely, because I do like hanging out with you,” you pick back up. “But can we maybe just be friends first?”
“Yes, yes! That sounds amazing!” Soonyoung’s smile grows wider than it has the whole evening.
“Ok then we’re splitting the bill, I saw you trying to sneak it out of my sight.”
“Ok, but in that case, I’m walking you home.”
*******************************************************************************************
Your friend group grows a bit after that because you and Soonyoung actually do become friends. Like... really good friends. Soonyoung comes over all the time and honestly you’ve never enjoyed life more. After being stuck with a friend group that was mostly people you knew before even coming to college, it was nice to make a new friend.
Soonyoung was really a wild card in your life. He liked different things than most of your friends, so he really pushed you out of your comfort zone. Even though you’re not dating, you still feel like Soonyoung has helped you experience so many things that you wanted to, to have the full college experience.
It’s mostly the little things that you didn’t even know you were avoiding: going to parties, staying out all night, cutting class for a day to drive out of town for no reason. Soonyoung is just all fun all the time.
He’s also just a really good friend, always kind and supportive. And honestly, you like the idea of Soonyoung being around for a long time.
“I thought you two were going to put it off? You know, just be friends?” Mingyu asks as you’re telling him how much you like Soonyoung.
“I mean yeah, but that was awhile ago,” you shrug, not looking up from your laptop.
“But you don’t want to rush it, what if you scare him off?”
Mingyu has always been able to get you to do anything he wants you to, and it’s starting to make you mad.
*******************************************************************************************
You start to wonder if Mingyu is just jealous that you haven’t been spending as much time with him.  So, you decide to clear your schedule for some quality time.
And he’s... different.
Usually Mingyu is all teasing and sarcasm with you. Everything is comfortable, but still distant. It’s been that way for as long as you can remember.
But now, it’s different.
He talks so kindly to you. He does random things for you. Affection has become slightly more intimate.
You don’t really notice, thinking he’s just reached another level of comfort in your friendship. And honestly it’s nice. You feel even more at ease around him, if that was even possible.
“Gyu,” you say one day, when there’s a tiny voice in the back of your head is begging you to ask, “are we... ok?”
He nods, linking his arm with yours as the two of you walk towards your favorite coffee shop, “Of course we are, why wouldn’t we be?”
“I don’t know, you were... distant for awhile... and now...” you trail off.
“Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I was just going through some stuff, but I shouldn’t have just ignored you like that,” he leans over with his other arm and ruffles your hair.
You nod, comforted in the feeling of Mingyu next to you.
After that day, you go back to spending more time with Mingyu, realizing how much you missed him. And you realize something, you want Mingyu in your life for a long time, too. You can’t imagine life without him. He’s always been there, and you know he always will be.
*******************************************************************************************
Choi Seungcheol is throwing a giant party at his frat house before the winter break. And while you usually avoid going to frat parties, Dokyeom, Soonyoung, and Mingyu all berated you until you agreed to go.
You sigh as Mingyu drags you towards the car. He leaps into the back with Dokyeom and you sit up front with Soonyoung. You all jam out as you drive to the frat house. You’re feeling elated to just be spending time with your closest friends. The feeling immediately disappears when you reach the street the house is on. There’s like a million cars outside and the party looks insane.
The boys sense your hesitation, prompting Dokyeom and Soonyoung to hang their arms over your shoulder and drag you towards the house.
“Can’t we just have a movie marathon?” you groan.
“Relax, [Y/N],” Mingyu says, “we’ll be right next to you the whole time.”
You lose sight of them two minutes in.
You sigh angrily, being pushed around by excited people rushing by, hating the taste of your drink, feeling a headache coming on, and feeling way too sober for being at a frat party. It’s been too long since you’ve seen one of the boys and you’re starting to get restless.
You find Dokyeom first, but he’s in the corner flirting with someone you can’t quite see and you decide not to ruin his moment.
After moving on, and making your way through the house, you finally spot Soonyoung by himself on the couch. You happily plop down next to him, relieved to have found a friend.
“Hey [Y/L/N]!” Soonyoung exclaims. “How’s it going?”
“Not as good as you’re doing, you are wasted buddy,” you laugh.
Soonyoung laughs and nods his head, “I am!!!!” He rolls back and laughs, before rolling back up and frowning, “Why aren’t you???”
“I don’t know, I just don’t feel much like drinking tonight,” you shrug before smiling brightly at Soonyoung who is nodding along to your words like a tired toddler.
“Hey [Y/N],” Soonyoung says sitting up straight and looking into your eyes.
“What’s up, Soonie?”
“I really like you... I mean, I really like that you’re in my life.”
“I like you too, Soonyoung, I’m happy that you’re around.”
The world sort of pauses as you and Soonyoung stare into each other’s eyes. You can tell he’s leaning forward. You feel a lot of emotions, and before you’re able to figure out what they are, you start to lean forward too.
Before your lips meet, something lands in your lap. “Hey guys!” Mingyu yells as he sits in between you.
“It’s Mingyu!” Soonyoung exclaims, hugging him.
“Oh god, how drunk are both of you?” you sigh, feeling... disappointment? Relief, maybe?
“Hey [Y/N],” it’s Mingyu calling you this time. “I’m tireeeeed.”
“What do you want me to do about it, Gyu?” you pinch his nose for half a second.
“Take me home pleeeeeeeeeeease,” he whines.
“I don’t know if you remember this, but we drove here with other people who may not be ready to leave yet.”
“Take my car,” Soonyoung interjects.
“What?” you ask, caught off guard.
“Yeah, me and Dokyeom usually sleep over at Cheol’s parties anyways, and it seems like you two really want to go home. Just come get us in the morning?” You want to argue with Soonyoung, feeling guilty about leaving suddenly after...
“Yeah, I’ll come get you guys tomorrow,” you say softly, sharing a brief moment of eye contact with him before dragging Mingyu up off the couch. “You two stay safe and call me at anytime if anything happens.”
Soonyoung agrees before standing up to find Dokyeom. You drag your best friend towards the door as he points around wildly saying “To the dorm!’
Mingyu has always been able to get you to do whatever he wants you to, and that day, it makes you angry.
*******************************************************************************************
“Do you wanna tell me what’s going on?” you ask as Mingyu plops down on his couch.
“I’m too drunk for whatever you’re about to ask about,” Mingyu grumbles with his face in the cushions. Your rage flares.
“No, we’re talking about this now, because we’ve been putting it off for too long,” you stomp over to the couch. “What’s going on with you?”
“What do you mean?” his voice is strained.
“Did you interrupt me and Soonyoung on purpose?” you ask.
Mingyu doesn’t respond.
“Kim Mingyu! Answer me!”
“I told you to date for fun, not to find your soulmate,” he suddenly pipes up.
“Do you think I think Soonyoung is my soulmate? I just really like him, what’s so wrong with the idea of us being together?” you throw your hands up in exasperation.
“Stop yelling,” Mingyu whines, his hands flying up to cover his ears.
“No! Tell me what your problem is!” you say, feeling tears pricking your eyes.
Mingyu falls silent again.
“Just say it Mingyu,” you demand. “Tell me why you don’t want me to date Soonyoung.”
Mingyu says nothing.
“Fine, I’m leaving,” you say, grabbing your stuff and stomping towards the door. “Don’t bother calling me tomorrow.”
Your heart is heavy as you leave.
*******************************************************************************************
You drop Dokyeom off in front of the dorm the next morning, apologizing for not walking him up. He assures you it’s ok, sensing the tension coming from you when he asks if Mingyu got home ok.
“You wanna get breakfast?” Soonyoung asks as soon as Dokyeom is out the door. “I feel like we gotta talk.”
“Breakfast sounds great,” you say pulling away, ignoring the rest of what he said.
You two go to a little coffee shop down the street after Soonyoung admits that he could probably stomach a pastry better than a full meal. You laugh as Soonyoung tiredly cradles his coffee. You two eat and talk casually for a few minutes.
“So I guess we should address what I almost did last night,” Soonyoung says finally setting his coffee down.
“Right,” you agree, deciding to let Soonyoung take the lead on the conversation and go with the flow.
“It was a mistake. I was drunk and all over the place and I shouldn’t have done it,” Soonyoung says, bowing his head. “Honestly [Y/N], you’re a really great friend, and I don’t want to do anything to ruin what we have. I like where we’re at and I don’t see any reason for it to be anything else.”
“I agree,” you smile, still not fully sure of your emotions.
Thankfully, you have a friend like Soonyoung to straighten them out for you.
“If I’m being honest, [Y/N], the moment I saw you and Mingyu together for the first time, I kind of knew my chances of dating you were at a zero.”
“What do you mean?” you ask, your heartrate accelerating for some reason.
“It’s just... the way you two are around each other. You do everything for each other. You just... know each other. You really care about each other. You’re comfortable with each other. And the way you look at each other is just...”
Soonyoung pauses for a moment and stares at you, his bright as ever smile still plastered on his face.
“I just think that you two have something special, and you’re both afraid to admit it.”
You spend the rest of your breakfast with Soonyoung staring out the window and just watching the world outside.
*******************************************************************************************
You don’t talk to Mingyu for the rest of the semester. Every time you see him on campus you avoid him.
You can’t get what Soonyoung said out of your head, but you’re still just so pissed at Mingyu. Although, you’re not sure why. Was it how weird he got when you and Soonyoung first started hanging out? How he interrupted you two the night of the party? How he refused to be honest with you afterwards? A combination of everything?
You both go home for the break, and your heart cracks a little every time your mom asks why Mingyu hasn’t come over to hang out at all.
You realize at the end of the day, you just miss your best friend. You can work through the other stuff with him, but you can’t really live without him.
Almost as soon as you realize this, your phone dings.
Gyu: Let’s meet up at the park tomorrow, we need to talk
Mingyu is able to get you to do whatever he wants you to, and this time, it’s sort of a relief.
*******************************************************************************************
The park is covered in a light layer of snow, the yellow and orange leaves on the trees peaking through. You are bundled up, trying to ignore the freeze biting at your fingertips. You walk slowly around the perimeter of the park. You see Mingyu sitting on a bench from a mile away. You pause to just stare at him, bundled up in a puffy coat, staring up at the snowflakes coming down.
*******************************************************************************************
“C’mon [Y/N]! Aren’t you excited for the third grade?” Mingyu says as he balances on the bench to walk across the edge.
“Not since we had to move schools,” you grumble.
“It’ll be fun! We can make new friends!”
“You’ll make friends.”
“[Y/N], don’t be so negati-” Mingyu started before falling off the bench. You pause in surprise staring at your best friend on the ground. You jumped forward to lean next to him.
“Are you ok?” you asked gently.
Mingyu gulped before nodding, “Yeah it’s just my hands.” He lifted them up to show that they were all scraped up.
“C’mon, my house is closer, let’s get you cleaned up,” you said. Mingyu sniffled a little as you lead him towards your house. “You’re ok,” you insisted, “you’ve got me.”
*******************************************************************************************
“Mingyu are you sure we’re allowed to do this?” you asked, looking around nervously.
“What do you think someone’s gonna do if they catch us? Arrest us?” Mingyu said from underneath the bench where he was carving his initials into the wood. He slid out and stood up before grabbing your arm and pulling you down. “Your turn.”
You slid under the bench and stared at Mingyu’s initials. “You’re making sure no one’s walking by right?”
“Geez [Y/N], you’re the biggest scaredy-cat thirteen year old I’ve ever met, live a little!” Mingyu laughed.
You huff before beginning to carve your initials next to his.
*******************************************************************************************
“So what are you gonna do, huh? Run away?” Mingyu has his arm around you as you’re crying on the bench in the middle of the night.
“Maybe,” you say between sniffles.
“Do you realize how stupid you sound? Where are you going to go? C’mon [Y/N], we only have two years! Two more years before we graduate and we’re out of here! Then we’ll go to college and live it up!”
Mingyu takes his arm from around your shoulder to poke your side until you’re laughing.
“We’re gonna be ok as long as we’re together.”
*******************************************************************************************
You sigh happily at the memories before making your way over to him. You sit silently next to him, your fingers slipping under the wood to feel that your initials are still carved into the bench.
“I checked too,” Mingyu says breaking silence. You hum in acknowledgment. “I’m sorry [Y/N]. I got... jealous. You and Soonyoung seemed like you had something really... deep. And I didn’t realize how much that would affect me until I saw it happening. But I want you to be happy so-”
“Me and Soonyoung agreed to be friends,” you interject.
“Oh,” is all Mingyu says but you don’t miss how his tone lightens at the realization.
“You know Soonyoung seems to have this idea that we’re in love,” you say, pushing Mingyu’s shoulder with yours.
“Does he now,” Mingyu laughs into the chilly air, before there’s a moment of silence.
“I know whether he’s right or wrong about my feelings... but... what about you Gyu? How are you feeling right now?”
“I feel like when I saw how much you enjoyed hanging out with Soonyoung, I thought I was going to go insane. I feel like the day you were upset with me after the party was the worst day of my life. I feel like the days when I thought our friendship was over were the darkest period of time,” Mingyu says slowly before looking over to you. “And I feel like when I’m with you is when I’m at my happiest. I feel like when I look at you, everything makes sense. I feel like when I have you by my side, I can do anything.”
You grab his hand, hoping you are not once again going to end up crying on this bench.
“I feel like I love you [Y/N], and that I always will.”
Mingyu finally fully faces you after saying his piece.
“I love you too Mingyu, more than anything in this world.”
*******************************************************************************************
“Can you two stop being so gross,” Dokyeom groans as you and Mingyu giggle together on the couch. Mingyu responds by pulling you closer, and pressing a kiss to your cheek.
You push him back, “Hey stop being such a jerk to your roommate, he knows where you live.”
“Yeah, see, at least [Y/N] is on my side!” Dokyeom exclaims.
“Wow betrayed by my own partner,” Mingyu says, but he’s got love in his eyes as he gazes at you. You smile before pressing a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth.
“Ugh, gross, [Y/N], I thought you were on my side,” Dokyeom shakes his head.
“Sorry, that was it, I promise,” you laugh in response.
“Well I hope you two lovebirds are ready to be interrupted, me and Soonyoung are throwing a game night with all the boys,” Dokyeom says, turning back to his laptop.
“Hmmmm, sounds like you’re going to have to let me stay at your place tonight,” Mingyu grins.
“Is that so?” you smile back before sneaking a kiss to his lips while Dokyeom is looking away.
Mingyu is able to get you to do anything he wants you to, and these days, it’s hardly a bother.

Nightmares.
That's what the doctor said to him. "You can't sleep because of the nightmares!" Thats what he was told by them. For ten years doctors told him its just nightmares. But he knew it wasn't nightmares no...He was being haunted by her. Dead and cold e/c eyes stared at him from the darkness as they dulled. A faint shattering sound accompanied it as he watched shards of glass fall.
His heart was cracked black lines trailed against his skin hidden under his shirt. It had cracked all those years ago when he thought she was gone. She had recovered though it was a miracle really that she had. After all he was there when her heart shattered.
Hanamaki and Matsukawa still looked at him with disgust. They supported him sure but they only supported him because they wanted him out of Japan. Iwaizumi didn't look at him the same either, there was always something hidden behind his gazes. He could take the anger from them though it was worth it to know she was still alive.
He loved her. He knew that, Iwaizumi knew it. For ten years he asked Iwaizumi how she was doing "she's fine," was the only response he got. Now he could see for himself if she was fine. The Olympics were here and he was currently on his way to Japan with his team. It'd been a long time since he'd been back. Almost nine years now but he wasn't worried. He curled into the plane seat shutting his eyes and trying to catch some nightmare free sleep...
___________________________________________
"Y/n-chan! You look really pretty today!" He threw an arm around the h/cette's shoulder pulling her roughly into his side. She stumbled a bit peering up at him through long eyelashes. "Can you let me go please Oikawa-san?" She asked shifting to pry his arm off. He held on though and gasped "Eh? Why Y/n-chan!" He shrieked and just like that his arm was thrown off her shoulder and Iwaizumi stood there.
"Dumbass she doesn't like people touching her!" He yelled flicking him in the forehead. He whined and rubbed at the spot "Iwa-chan you're supposed to be on my side!" Iwaizumi simply shook his head before turning towards Y/n. "So Y/n have you decided on a high school yet?" She merely hummed "I was thinking Shiratori-" "No you can't go there!" Oikawa cut off quickly throwing himself infront of her.
"...Can I finish my sentence?" She asked sending a pointed look towards him. "Please do," Iwaizumi supplied as he covered Oikawa's mouth. "Shiratorizawa but my cousin convinced me to go to Aoba Johsai instead," She finished sending a pointed look towards him. He pried Iwaizumi's hand off to speak "You're going to Aoba Johsai!?" She laughed then smiling at him and he felt his heart rate speed up in response.
It'd been a few months since then he was a third year now and her a sparkling brand new first year at Aoba Johsai. Since day one he'd been around her constantly. Walking her to her classes or sitting with her at lunch sometimes bringing her an extra piece of Milk Bread. Of course the team knew he liked her it stared them in the face everyday. He'd smile at his phone everytime she texted or his face would flush slightly when she complimented him. Not that she ever noticed but they knew she was falling to.
She no longer rejected physical touches from him she leaned into them instead. She always smiled at him whenever he appeared in her line of sight. She even started using his first name! Halfway through the school year everybody knew Oikawa Tooru and L/n Y/n were attached at the hip. Fangirls confessed all the time but he rejected them without fail thinking of the girl with s/c skin and e/c eyes. He wanted her confession but it never came to him. He got tired of the team making fun of him one day. They always picked on him so why should they be allowed to do it when it involves the girl he liked?
"Oh please! Like I even care about her! She's getting boring anyway i'll just move on to a new girl. One that's more exciting and not some bright-eyed first year," He had said crossing his arms and looking up indignantly. "Oikawa...You don't mean that," Iwaizumi said slowly looking at him. "Of course I do. She's boring now," He pushed refusing to crack under the pressure.
Of course how was he going to remember that all of this went down a minute before she was supposed to walk into the gym to watch him practice like everyday? He really should have remembered that if he had things might have gone differently. Practice had ended as usual though it had been quieter than he remembered. Something was missing and he knew it.
He shrugged it off as he left the locker room walking towards the front gates to wait for Iwaizumi with Y/n. "Hey Y/n-chan what'd you think of practice?" He waited a moment to see her rush around the corner in a flurry of excitement but it never happened. "Y/n-chan..?" Rounding the corner of the gate he saw the spot they normally waited in was empty no sign of the beautiful girl anywhere.
There was however a piece of paper trapped against the bars. It was a small thing easily loseable but the way it was crumpled and felt soft meant the paper he held was old and probably had been thrown away. He opened it slowly and glared at what he saw on it. 'Kageyama Tobio xxxx-xxx-xxxx' What were the odds he'd find his enemies number here of all places? Astronomically low he knew as he chucked the paper away.
Iwaizumi had come up then pushing him along while he struggled. "Iwa-chan! Y/n-chan isn't here yet!" Iwaizumi rolled his eyes. "She went home. She was feeling sick today," He responded easily while Oikawa's nose crinkled. That was impossible he'd been with her all day except for in class. She was perfectly normal in every way today, he'd have know she was sick.
Maybe if he said something to Iwaizumi instead of keeping quiet he'd have seen her and fixed everything. Maybe if he had made them stop at the park like he did everyday instead of being consumed by his thoughts he might have seen a familiar h/c haired girl sitting with a boy that had blackish blue hair and vibrant blue eyes.
He might have seen the boy give her his jacket and a carton of milk when she started crying. Or how he awkwardly patted her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. But instead the duo walked on with him thinking about how to ask Y/n why she lied. Of course for the next two weeks he wouldn't receive a response since she avoided him at every turn.
Eventually though he cornered her right outside the gym after she dropped off Hanamaki's water bottle. He didn't question why she had it or the black and blue jacket she was wearing that was slightly too big for her. Instead he ran after her stopping her before she got to far. "Hey! Y/n-chan why are you avoiding me!?" He shouted towards her.
She and everyone else nearby stopped people whispered as they looked at them but he didn't care. He watched her turn and froze as dull e/c eyes met his own. "Just speeding things up. After all you said I was boring Oikawa-san,"
___________________________________________
He jolted awake sitting up rapidly as he tried to slow down his racing heart. "Hey you okay man?" He turned his head looking at his teammates who looked startled. "Yeah I'm fine...Just a bad dream," He smiled at them before looking out the window. Japan was spread out below them lights twinkling in the dark.
The smile fell from his face as they landed replaced with a sense of displacement and nostalgia. He gripped his bags tightly tomorrow he would be facing his biggest rivals on the court all to see who would win the gold. He didn't have time to think about what happened to the girl he used to know.
___________________________________________
"Wha- who said you were boring?" He asked stepping towards her. She took a step back in response "You did. Two weeks ago when I went to the gym. I heard you," His eyes widened dramatically as he looked at her "No- That's out of context!" He tried to save it but she just shook her head.
"Don't lie Oikawa-san," Her eyes became more dull as she spoke. "Don't- dont call me Oikawa please. Dont do that please," he begged reaching out towards her. She coughed then putting a hand up to her mouth. As she did the sleeve of the jacket rolled down and he saw them. The thin black lines trailing across her skin and decorating her pale s/c arm.
"Y/n-chan...," he trailed off as his eyes focused on her arm and the thin trail of blood coming from her mouth. She smiled but it wasn't anything. Only a slight twitch upwards no warmth behind it. "Its okay Oikawa-san you helped me you know?" He paused as he looked at her "Helped you..?" She nodded slowly "Yeah! You helped me realize that love is worthless so thank you," He could only watch in horror as the black veins spread further and widened being accompanied by a cracking sound.
Like someone had thrown a ball threw a glass window she collapsed at the same time a shattering sound filled the air. A girl nearby screamed as Y/n fell while someone else yelled for emergency services. "Y/n!" He was shoved backwards as Hanamaki and Matsukawa ran past him.
"What happened!?" Matsukawa yelled as he lifted her head. He looked at him while blood dripped from her mouth. "I- I don't know. S-she said she heard me a-and-," Hanamaki whipped around at that "She heard you!?" He stood blood had left a red stain on his white track pants.
"If she dies from this I will never forgive you," Hanamaki hissed. "Makki she's- she's not breathing!" Matsukawa screamed pressing a hand on her heart. Paramedics rushed into the area skittering around as the pushed Matsukawa and Hanamaki away. "What happened?" One of the medics asked. "Glass Heart Syndrome," Hanamaki answered back glaring at Oikawa as he spoke.
"We need to get her out of here right away! Lets go!" The medic had run back over towards Y/n helping to pick her up onto the gurney. They paramedics left quickly with her denying Hanamaki and Matsukawa's attempt to go with her. They raced into the gym grabbing their stuff before running back out. Hanamaki shoved Oikawa out of the way and down to the ground as they ran.

He sighed as he jolted awake for the third time in a row. This was ridiculous she wasn't even dead so why couldn't he sleep without seeing dead e/c eyes? Guilt that's what Iwaizumi told him. He tilted his head to see the time five am was what the clock told him. He needed to meet the rest of the team at seven thirty so he changed and went running.
The streets he ran on seemed so familiar but so different to him. Of course he stopped at the nearby park it was similar to the one he used to stop at with Iwaizumi and Y/n. Those trips long since abandoned after what he did his eyes flittered over the park until they landed on a h/cette. His eyes widened as he looked at her so similar to the last time he saw her.
Slightly taller and figure slightly rounder perfect to him but it hurt to realize it was a pregnancy bump. The h/c hair on her head sparkled and her e/c eyes glittered with a warmth he hadn't seen in years. He began walking towards her almost starting to run until a voice stopped him. "Y/n!" He stopped immediately snapping his head to the side. Barreling towards her was a male with silver and black hair and golden eyes sparkling. He knew who that was...Bokuto Koutarou wing spiker for the MSBY Black Jackals and he was his opponent in the upcoming game.
He slunk closer and it was then that he noticed a little girl hugged to Bokutos chest. She couldn't have been older than five from what he could see but he noticed that running through the girls h/c hair were streaks of silver. He certainly didn't expect her to take the little girl from him and kiss his cheek. His shock was palpable when she reached a hand up to run through his hair. A thin sliver band with a small diamond on it glared back at him glittering in the sun.
Bokuto had lifted his own hand to run it through the small girl's hair the silver came through more prominently as well as exposing dark navy almost black streaks he hadnt seen before. The little girls head turned revealing a single e/c eyes. His eyes however zoned in on the gold band on Bokuto's finger. He was excitedly talking to her while she shook her head and started walking off. He watched Bokuto's eyes widen comically as the wing spiker ran off after her.
He stood frozen as he watched the scene anybody could see a cute family scene. That should have been him handing her their kid not Bokuto. But it wasn't him no it was someone else. So of course he called Iwaizumi to complain.
"Iwa! You didn't tell me Y/n was married to that- that wing spiker!?" He yelled into the phone while Iwaizumi scoffed. "One I shouldnt tell you anything about Y/n since you ruined that. And two thats not your business," He returned the statement with a scoff of his own. "Not my business? Shes married! You know what Iwa. I'll win her back," Iwaizumi laughed then it was laced with disbelief much like his voice was.
"Sorry you are gonna try to win back a married woman who has a kid and another one on the way?" Iwaizumi was right that sounded wrong out loud but he couldn't back down. "Yes! I'm gonna win her back from that Bokuto guy!" Iwaizumi snorted "Sorry how'd you figure they were married?" Iwaizumi asked with a laugh "I saw the rings and her daughter has silver hair like him!" He stated indignantly.
Iwaizumi did bust out laughing then "Silver hair? Must have dyed it then," Iwaizumi mumbled quietly. "Iwa what are you going on about?" He asked not being able to hear the male on the other line clearly. "Oh nothing just suprised you don't pay more attention to your sworn enemies," He called uninterested. "I pay enough attention to know they're on the same team and will be playing against me," He hissed and Iwaizumi laughed. "I gotta go. See you later Oikawa," He hung up and Oikawa sighed as he put the phone away.

"Oh are you all here for Ms. L/n?" The team turned eyes landing on a doctor with short brown hair and hazel eyes. He was clearly foreign but they didn't have any questions other than about her. Looking at them all he could see the fear in their faces and sighed. "Well its a miracle really that she lived. One of the worst cases of Glass Heart Syndrome I've seen in years," Oikawa froze as he felt the numerous glares on his back.
"Thank you doctor...?" Hanamaki walked forward looking at the man. "McCoy. Leonard McCoy," He said holding out a hand. "Thank you Doctor McCoy. Can we see her?" Hanamaki shook his hand while the doctor sighed. "Im afraid not. She still needs some time to recover we're going to try some beta blockers but until we try them I can't allow you guys in just incase," He said turning back around and leaving just like that.
The next week was spent waiting for the news. It came during practice one day for them "The beta blockers worked. She starts school again tomorrow at a new school," Matsukawa said as he walked back into the gym. The team cheered in excitement "Wait a new school? Shes transferring?" He asked stopping everyone while Hanamaki scoffed "she lived which was a fucking miracle and now you want her back here at the school that she almost died at with the person who almost killed her?" He flinched at the tone.

The game had ended with Argentina's victory them winning the gold. He smirked at the wing spiker on the other side who only tilted his head in confusion silver hair following the movement. Iwaizumi smacked him as he approached "Stop looking at Bokuto like that," He said with a sigh. "I won against him and now I'll do it again," He was determined as he huffed. "Also Iwa how could you! Did you even know they got married!?" Iwaizumi scoffed in disbelief.
"Of course I knew she got married. I was a groomsmen along with Ushijima and Bokuto. Hinata was the best man," He processed the words "Sorry did you say Bokuto was a grooms-," before he could continue his questioning the patter of running feet interrupted him. "Daddy!" He snapped his head to the side seeing the little girl again only this time his jaw dropped.
The girl was pulled into a pair of arms which he followed to their owner. Kageyama's side profile glared back at him as he smiled down at the little girl. From this side he saw her other eye was a vibrant blue shade and sparkled in joy. "Hi angel what's going on here?" He lifted the girls hair in his finger and Oikawa saw the silver band around his ring finger while silver hair slipped through his fingers. "Uncle Kashi took me to the hair salon while he was watching me! I got my hair done to match Uncle Bo!" The little girl threw her arms up with a smile.
"Eh? Why not Uncle Tsumu kid?" Atsumu had asked joining the conversation. The girls nose crinkled "Uncle Bo is better than you!" Atsumu threw a hand over his heart and gasped mocking hurt. "Sachi Kageyama what did I tell you about running off?" Everyone turned seeing Y/n walking over with her arms crossed Akaashi stood next to her carrying her bag of stuff a ring of gold stood out prominently on his finger. "M'sorry mama," The girl now identified fully as Sachi frowned looking down with big eyes.
"Sachi. Just because Uncle Bo's sad face doesn't work on me doesn't mean yours will," She tapped her foot twice and Oikawa felt it the black veins trailing on his skin getting bigger and darker. He could hear the crack in his heart as Kageyama leaned over to kiss Y/n. The two of them fitted together perfectly while Bokuto bounded over to Akaashi and threw an arm around his shoulders. "Alright we get it. You two and your miracle are cute!" Hinata claimed as he shoved the two apart.
Y/n laughed as she looked up her eyes flittered over the other team stopping on Oikawa for a moment. He froze under her gaze. The warmth in her eyes faded replaced by the same empty and dead eyes he'd grown used to. The group had headed towards the exit as he felt the cracks happen rapidly. The last thing he could remember was the loud sound of something glass shattering before he collapsed to the ground.

Day 4: Anxceit
@tsshipmonth2020
Day 4: There is a trail of color only you can see that marks out where your soulmate has been.
Content warning: parental death from heart attack (none of the sides), homophobia, religious themes regarding said homophobia, concert, minor sensory overload (Virgil is technically autistic but it’s not explicit).
Word count: 3.3k
The last thing Janus Natter had ever wanted to do was return to his hometown.
It only held bad memories that stemmed from living in a small town, of homophobia and school bullies and dirty looks from neighbours. Granted, he’d never actually been kicked out of his home after coming out, but word spread like a wildfire and the people in his neighborhood weren’t the most open minded. His mom didn’t talk to him; she blamed herself, and there were all too many nights he walked past her room and heard her praying and crying for the repentance of her baby boy.
So the moment he turned eighteen, he was out of there. Waved goodbye to the woman who stiffened every time he tried to hug her and moved halfway across the country, starting a new life for himself in a rundown apartment and a minimum wage intern job and not regretting it for a second. Everything seemed better for a while. A promotion followed a couple years after, and his apartment was upgraded to one that actually had a separate kitchen and dining room so he wasn’t eating on the counter anymore. Until he got a call from one of his aunts at three am, four days after Christmas.
Obviously, he cried when his mom died. He broke down as soon as he hung up the phone, sitting on the edge of his bed and letting the news slowly integrate into his system. Sure, they hadn’t had the best relationship, but she’d been a great mom up until he admitted the truth that drove a wedge between them. And he’d never really blamed her, knowing his own internal homophobia would only be heightened in her. But it still hurt that she hadn’t reached out whatsoever when she was put into the hospital after the first heart attack. Maybe he would have been there when the second one hit and been able to save her. Or at least say goodbye.
The funeral was rough. None of his family bothered to talk to him, and the one little cousin that ran up to give him a hug was swiftly pulled away. Not like he was expecting much else, but c’mon. It’s not infectious. At least no one commented on him crying again.
He was on the first flight back out, and after a couple days off work to recenter himself, things seemed to back to normal. It wasn’t as if any part of his daily routine was disturbed. He wasn’t missing any motherly catch up calls, no little packages, no life advice, that he’d never gotten before, so it was almost easy to pretend that nothing had changed. Until he got another call.
This time it was his uncle, calling in the middle of his work day, to tell him that he needed to come back home and clear out his mom’s house. He was reluctant at first. Why couldn’t someone else do it? What was so important that he had to do it? But the family seemed determined to distance themselves from the house as much as possible, and when his uncle insisted that “we’re all still in mourning, Janus,” as if to imply he wasn’t upset at the death of his own mother, he hung up the phone with a curt agreement to come back as soon as possible. He later got a text that stated the house was going to be put on the market in the coming week, so he needed to get there soon.
That’s what led to him exiting a cab three days later in front of his childhood home, suitcase in hand, with a disgruntled expression. The house was much less threatening than it had always seemed when he lived there, unassuming and indistinguishable from the other houses on the block, but the memories of lonely nights of crying himself to sleep and craving a hug from his mother were at the forefront of his mind. You’re never going to get another hug from her. He quickly snapped out of it before the tears could rise, thanking the cab driver and walking up to the front door.
His mother had taken his key when he left, claiming it was to give to a neighbour to water her flowers when she went on a cruise or something equally far fetched, but Janus figured she just wouldn’t want to be surprised by him visiting. This was, afterall, the first time she’d been free from his disappointing presence in years. Luckily, they’d always kept a spare under the plant by the door, now wilted and crusty and dropping leaves when he leaned it over, hand slapping the concrete underneath.
Nothing.
He picked it up off the ground entirely, sweeping the ground directly under it and then scanning the surrounding area with growing irritation. Had someone taken it after the funeral? How the hell did they expect him to get into the house? Oh yeah, come clean the house but we’re gonna take the key! Fuckers.
A loud crash from behind the door startled him enough to drop the plant, the ceramic pot smashing on the stairs. Whoops. Another sound from inside, something that sounded like a chair scraping on the tiled kitchen floor, and Janus realized with mounting horror that the front door was open a crack. His family had all claimed to not be able to even come near the place, so… Fantastic. Someone had broken into a death house and he was going to have to deal with it.
The wise choice would have been to call the police.
So Janus pushed the door open and walked in, ignoring the sudden flurry of memories in favor of following the source of the noise.
“Hello?” Yeah, smart, Janus, that always works in the horror movies!
Another scrape in the steadily approaching kitchen, accompanied by muffled swearing. As an almost last thought, Janus picked up the first small object he could feel on the entry table, acknowledging its heft and hoping it would be a suitable weapon without taking his eyes from the hall. Here goes nothing.
Then, in a move to top all stupidity, he turned into the room in a whirl, hoisting the weapon above his head, ready to beat down on whoever was rifling through his dead mother’s drawers. Only to freeze.
“Remus?”
“Janus, what the fuck!” The statement was said with a surprising amount of glee. Remus was the only person he knew who could turn swears into something joyful.
Janus turned his gaze to the floor and the chair Remus was standing on, surrounded by a pile of glass shards. It looked to be the remnants of the entire glass collection, if the amount was anything to go by. Remus gave another shuffle of his chair, the loud shriek sounding again, as he tried to scooch closer without stepping on the shards in his bare feet.
“Why are you holding a banana?”
It took him a solid second to process Remus’ question before he looked down at his own hand, his fingers curled around the metal banana from the decorative fruit bowl in the entry.
“No reason. Why are you in my house, destroying my dinnerware?”
“Help me not step in glass and I’ll tell you.”
Finding a broom was easy; it was still in the same place it always had been before he left. Cleaning the glass took longer, what with Remus’ flurry of questions and Janus’ focus between answering him, sweeping, and not whacking Remus on the head with the broom handle. Apparently it didn’t take long for him to become annoying again.
Still, the grinning man had been the one and only reason he’d had trouble saying goodbye to the town, the only person who still gladly befriended him after coming out. He hated to admit how much he’d missed him.
When the floor was clear, Remus hesitantly stepped down off the chair, wiggling his toes on the ground.
“Why did you take your shoes off when you came in? It’s not like anyone’s gonna be pissed if you track mud in anymore.”
“I didn’t wear any.”
“Of course you didn’t.”
Remus shared a softer look with him, the manic smile drooping, “Hey, I’m sorry about your mom. That’s rough.”
“Yeah,” Was Janus’ incredibly eloquent response. He shook his head, and Remus accepted the subject change with no questions, “So why are you here?”
“Well, I heard you were coming to clear the place out eventually, so I thought I’d get here early and start. Help you out.”
“And…”
“... And snoop around a little bit.”
“There it is.”
“Not like, bad stuff! Just… I don’t know. Deep, dark, family secrets.”
Janus sighed, taking in the kitchen for the first time since entering. “The biggest secret this family tries to hide is me.”
“Dark.”
“Mmhm.” He gasped as two arms suddenly wrapped around his shoulders, pulling him into the most physical contact he’d had in… years.
“Welcome back, Natter.”
“Yeah, well,” He cleared his throat of voice cracks before continuing, “I only got two days off work. So I’m not staying long. I somehow need to completely clear this place out in 48 hours,” He ran a hand down his face, pulling away from the hug reluctantly, “You wouldn’t actually be interested in helping, would you?”
It was more of a statement than a question, but Remus ignored it completely. “You’re only here two days? Inconceivable!”
“You’ve been watching Princess Bride again.”
“We gotta hang out!” The pleading expression on Remus’ face was almost enough to sell him on the idea.
“Weren’t you listening? I literally don’t have the time.”
“I’m going to a concert tonight in Brookton. Come with me!” Remus continued as if he hadn’t spoken, bouncing on the balls of his feet. “Just one night, Jan. Pleeeease? I’ll even come here and help you the rest of the time.”
With an affectionate snort, he shook his head, “As fun as that sounds, I’m broke.”
“I can get you in.”
“You’re not paying for me.”
“Who said anything about paying?”
Janus raised an eyebrow, though it was more like how a parent would scold a child than surprise. They’d always gotten into trouble together as kids, and this was just… a level up, in a way. Not that he condoned it.
“I know one of the security guards. He’s one of my hookups, and he happens to owe me a favor or two.”
  Wait. “You’re gay?”
“Shit, I didn’t tell you?!” Remus shrieked, grabbing Janus’ hand and dragging him to the front door, key waving in his face, “I’ll tell you all about it on the way. C’mon, it’s an hour drive.”
Well, looks like he didn’t have a say in it. And he’d be lying if he claimed he hadn’t missed hanging out with his old best friend… or just a friend at all, really.
“Fine, but you’re stopping by your place to grab shoes!”
-----------------------------------------------------
It wasn’t a small venue by any means. It wasn’t Beyonce big, but enough to know that if he lost track of Remus, he’d be fucked. In his rush out the door so soon after a morning of traveling, he’d forgotten his charger and his phone was conveniently dead. Janus kept a careful eye on Remus, following the bob of his neon green and black jacket through the crowd and only distantly wondering what band they were actually about to see. The gremlin kept pushing through, ignoring the annoyed shouts of people he shoved, leaving Janus to hastily apologize each time as he followed in his wake.
When Remus slowed just for a moment, stretching on his tiptoes to find a good spot over the sea of heads, Janus lunged forward and grabbed his sleeve. The taller man raised an eyebrow.
“As fun as it would be to get lost, I’m not in the mood.”
“Ah,” Remus’ eyes settled on a spot near the stage, one that Janus couldn’t see being a head shorter than him, “Good timing. Hang on tight.”
And hang on he did, because Remus fully embodied the physicality of a snow plow and plunged back into the crowd with new ferocity. Janus just closed his eyes and blindly let himself be led, letting the bubbling breathiness of a laugh escape his mouth. It had been too long since he’d just been able to have fun like this, without the threat of work and bills in his peripheral. The chatter was deafening in the best way possible, drowning out his worried thoughts, and the flashing lights that were still visible through his closed eyelids was invigorating. The promise for more elated him.
When Remus finally stopped, Janus didn’t get the memo on time and ran into his back full force. He grunted and opened his eyes, focused on his throbbing nose, before realizing how close to the stage they really were. The taller man was staring down at him, grinning maniacally, seemingly impressed with their placement as well.
Then a flash to the side caught his attention, and his throat went dry.
“Remus, look me in the eye and tell me you see that.”
His eyebrows scrunched in confusion before he followed Janus’ line of sight, seeing nothing but the dense crowd. “See what?”
“The light, the light trail…” Janus inhaled sharply through his nose, grip on the other’s sleeve tightening, “It’s my soulmate. He’s here somewhere.”
“Your soulmate? Seriously?”
“Yeah, I…”
“Well, fuck! You’re welcome, eh, Natter? I told you you should have come!” He gave Janus’ arm a light punch, smile widening. “Go find him!”
Janus seemed hesitant, eyes flickering between Remus and the deep purple light trail, weaving between the people and heading towards the back of the venue. “How will I find you again after?”
“That’s a problem for future you. Go, you idiot!”
“Okay, okay! I’m going! Just don’t leave without me!”
He was off before he could hear Remus’ answer, ducking under raised arms and trying his hardest to follow the quickly dissolving trail. Now that he had his eye on it, it had decided that it was time to disappear, and he was quickly losing sight of it.
No, scratch that, it was definitely getting brighter now. And more concrete around the edges, instead of fading out. Was he close? He weaved past another small group of people, eyes following the purple line until-
There.
Holy shit.
He was stunning, that was the first thing Janus noticed. The purple trail stopped at him, covering him with a faint lilac aura before fading completely, content with it’s work. At first he thought the slight tint to the other’s hair was left over from the soulmark, before the lights switched and he realized, no, his hair was dyed purple. The most eye catching thing, though, besides his makeup, was the bulky pair of… were those headphones on his ears? At a concert? Granted, it hadn’t started yet, but still.
Apparently he was standing in one place for too long amongst the constantly moving hoard of people, and his stillness got the attention of the boy in front of him. He gasped sharply when they made eye contact, shocked from what Janus assumed to be the soulmark that probably surrounded him. And then he started hyperventilating. Bad.
“Shit! Okay, hey, calm down, okay? It’s fine-”
He was cut off by a loud riff of an electric guitar, almost immediately drowned out by the screaming fans that surged forward like a tidal wave. The boy in front of him curled in on himself, hands pressing into the headphones around his ears in an attempt to drown out the noise. Despite his more cautionary side, Janus reached forward and took his arm, guiding him gently towards the door.
“Let’s go outside and talk, alright?”
Maybe following a stranger outside alone wasn’t the smartest idea but… Virgil had seen the soul mark, a gentle yellow glow around this man that quickly dissipated, leaving behind a man sharing an equally shocked look on his face. So that had to mean he wasn’t totally bad, right? Either he was his soulmate or some kind of guardian angel, and neither of those were necessarily bad options.
As soon as they stepped outside the main arena, it was as if the tight band around Virgil’s chest loosened. Not gone completely, but enough that he could catch his breath. He reached up and pulled his ear defenders off his head, relieved that the quiet was enough that he didn’t need them anymore. They were definitely a life saver, but sometimes the way they muffled noise was indescribably uncomfortable as well.
The man noticed his immediate relief, letting go of his guiding arm and slowing his pace so Virgil could walk beside him.
“I’m Janus.”
“Virgil.”
In a blur, they ended up outside the venue, sitting on the curb directly outside the main doors. Virgil was fiddling with his ear muffs, eyes trained on the inky darkness surrounding them. Besides the dull resounding of the bass echoing from inside and steady stream of traffic just out of their view, it was reasonably quiet.
“So, you live in Brookton?” Janus finally broke the comfortable silence, leaning back on his hands.
“Yeah. Not for long, though.”
“Oh?”
“Planning to get out soon. Don’t know where, don’t know how. But I’m not much of a ‘small town’ guy.”
“Brookton counts as a small town?”
Virgil hummed, finally placing the head gear down beside him and closing his eyes, breathing in the smell of fast food from the variety of food trucks around the area. It was a strange cacophony of oil and salt, oddly enticing even if just the scent was enough for his skin to break out.
“What about you? From around here?”
“Sort of?” He explained his story in as few words as possible, flying over his mom’s general unacceptance and her death, and the fact that he had to clean out her house in two days. “Less than that now, I guess. One and a half. It’s gonna be hell.” His head fell into his hands, fingers rubbing at the temples as if to soothe the headache he was expecting.
Virgil was a good listener, nodding along to the right parts and avoiding those stupid sympathetic looks he was so tired of. It was a nice relief to actually feel listened to, not pitied.
“My parents are kind of similar. It doesn’t feel like I have much to complain about, though, because… I mean, they didn’t kick me out. Don’t openly hate on me. But it still sucks. They don’t even acknowledge me half the time.”
“Exactly! And then you see people who have it worse, and it makes you feel like a piece of shit for feeling upset!”
“Good match, universe.” Virgil flopped onto his back, purple hair splayed out on the concrete. “It’s the subtle homophobia for me.”
“Ah, you’re a ‘meme person’.”
“Sucks for you, you’re stuck with me now.”
“I’ll manage,” Janus joined him on the ground, suddenly disgusted that he was still in the same outfit that he’d flown in today. He hated the smell of plane, and he must reek of it. But Virgil didn’t seem to mind his general disheveled appearance as he made an abstract comment about the moon being full today, and how that generally meant bad things. Janus made the mistake of asking him what he meant, which turned into a full blown lecture on mythology and cryptids, one that Virgil didn’t have the capability to control. It made him smile though, seeing the emo so utterly delighted to explain it, and he realized with a start that he was going to get to enjoy this man for the rest of his life. Two people who could talk, matched with a person who loved to listen equally as much. Virgil had been right. Good match, universe.

music, ya know
this is a complete impulse of lying in bed middle of the night thoughts that i don’t even know if anyone’s gonna see that have been stemmed off the experiences of the past couple days, topic of 1:41 am mind boggle:
music and it’s aesthetic and importance in literal every sense cause it’s just that important to me
first experience of realizing this, i’ve always loved film scores and listening to music and the orchestral pieces from movies and shows, but it really seemed to hit me recently, like the fact that this week’s new LOKI episode, no spoilers, has the most badass score and a badass scene with such a perfect mix and musical atmosphere. i literally had one of my best friends over, who has a very small interest in comics, cinema, marvel in general, especially a show about a norse comic god that they know nothing about, and whilst they sat there for my own regard, watching the show like a normal human being would, i sat there clinching their hand, watching in awe as our music is louder than actors talking tv speakers spurted out the most spine tightening world building story and just wandered “jesus that was good” and whilst i will always think about the superior acting, cgi, the amount of different people that just went into those few scenes and like what was physical set and what was computer image and what the hell did i just watch that has my brain running olympic marathon circles right now?
the thought that said brain kept going back to was that fucking score. it was literally tearing apart of every corner of my head and why was it doing that?
second experience, another marvel one, but i digress. black widow (no spoilers i promise), thursday night, movie theater for the first time in i can’t even remember how long now and we set through so many previews just for fucking boss baby to start playing and the reaction of the theater to make me burst out laughing.
however whatever works in that little projection box, gets fixed and the movie is pushed to just a little before it starts, a nice small pepsi ad, the regal rollercoaster intro (if you go to regal movie theaters ya know what i’m talking about), and then i hear it - the marvel studios logo - something so musically engraved into my head that my ass that can’t sing for anything, can harmonize with the sound and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up around movie theater surround sound. but i can’t think of that now, i’m here to watch black widow, a movie on hiatus with the rest of the world for so long now, a character i didn’t know much about it or truly, didn’t have the most connection with in the first place. yet through that one movie, i seemed to build one of those.
ofc though scarlett johansson’s beautiful acting and world building, but it isn’t until the end of the movie that i even realize why. it was the fucking score again. when i think about it, the beginning of the movie felt like all of black widows scenes in the avengers movies for me, kinda just, there. not really emotionally tugging, not bad ofc either, but just, there. in the present, watching something cool in motion. but then it hits, what i can only describe as a theme that somehow tells the entire black widow movie in one singular composition. something so badass, story telling, but also just singularly black widow-esk. i can tell you that i walked out the movie theater rambling about the composition and looking up composers.
third experience, the most recent as it was literally like 20 minutes ago and sprung one train rail of a thought process that immediately tugged me into typing this brain vomit into a tumblr post. i have playlists. for everything. and when i say everything, i fucking mean everything. i’m a writer and a reader, i have playlists mostly for the young avengers, my most utter comfort characters, and their stories i’m writing. i also have playlists/genre/specific song for about every book i read.
when i read red white and royal blue when that came out, i noticed i listened to one of the drunks by panic at the disco the entirety of the ending of the book and the words and music fit together like puzzle pieces, not only did it make the reading experience better, but i was so fucking emerged in my over hyper-imagitive brain that when i finally actually finished the book, i still never left. rewind present day to the beginning of this past june, one last stop comes out, ofc i get it the day it comes out with my anticipation building like wildfire. i start reading that night and i put on my recents on my liked songs playlist (true to true spotify user) and i slowly over the next day as i read and finish the book, windle down to the genre, then the band, to the album, to the exact song that feels like the carbon copy of the words i’m reading. that song was only ones who know by the arctic monkeys. now go back to this past week, anyone who reads the carry on series knows, anyway the wind blows came out this past tuesday. i waited till wednesday to buy the ✨pretty special addition barnes and nobles copy✨ so that the dear friend that indulged me by watching loki that same day could buy it at the same time and make a cute book date or whateva. i started reading that night and something just felt ,,, off. i didn’t know what it was, but i was living off the pure joy that simon and co give me so i ignored the feeling. until i realized why it felt off this morning. i wasn’t listening to any fucking music, literally nothing, not even queen. motherfucking. queen.
i looked for the snowbaz playlist i made when i read carry on for the first time back in 2016/2017 when i was still a freshman in high school just to remember i deleted that literally forever ago. so i made a new one. like an hour and a half ago. very inspired on how i made the playlists for the young avengers and all their stories. letting the music talk.
the fact that all these rambling thoughts have led to this conclusion makes my head hurt, but for me at least in my own experiences. music talks. a two way conversation. a radio broadcast, turning the peg until you match the same frequency thats being put out and you can hear it and understand it. it’s like when you see comedians on stages or actors on panels, they talk, you have reactions, you talk back, and so forth the loop continues until the last voice, last note, rings out. music and songs and orchestral pieces and bands and composers and lyric writers are telling you the stories in reverse. they don’t know their doing it, obviously they meant something entirely different in their creations, but it’s like literature and any work of words and storytelling. interpretation. to me, the notes, pianos, violins, guitars, drums, singers, cellos, and anything that can make sound you can think of, is telling you something. whispering in your ear as you watch or read. facial features, emotions the characters dont say out loud, outfits, they way their standing or talking or moving or interacting with anything and everything.
when i just made that carry on playlist, i played it, decided to try read some good almost 2 am fan fic as you do, my hanging on by a thread sleep brain telling me words aren’t recognizable right now, and tighten myself into a blanket to see if i can sleep at all. the playlist still plays and my never shuts up head thinks it’s own daydreams, stresses out about anything it can, that is until the song plays. the one that just speaks the carry on trilogy language. the one that i found whilst i was reading wayward son and then would play whenever i re read carry on. the one that started this whole way too long ass post in the first place. cant be alone tonight by atlas. i heard just the first sound and i saw them, as if i were in the same room, like i never even put the book down in the first damn place because i’m actually terrified of finishing it. i could see simon in his oversized hoodies, baz in an outfit that was way too good just to be sitting inside, agatha looking as pleasantly pretty as ever, penelope poking fun at shepherd, and shepherd poking fun right back; bickering, laughing, saying the dialogues i try to remember so i can write them later, existing.
in a way music doesn’t just talk, but it lives. it lives and breaths. a three way conversation you could say. characters, stories, plot, and settings talk to the music, then the music delivers us listeners the message, so that we can send one back. this literally took me over an hour to write and i should point the important note that i do have synesthesia where colors and sounds and colors and words do the association so this entire thing might be me being entirely biased, but alas, i love sound so much and if there is anyone else that feels the same ways as i do as just a simple good film score and song makes anything ten times better, feel free to talk, i will totally be awkward, but i need some music freaks like myself around so feel free to hit me up, also if you love movies and cinema also feel free to hit me up as i need movie buddies and now it’s 3 am and i will be going to bed - peace out 🛸

All I Want... 25 Days of Christmas Challenge, Day 5
Tumblr media
November 21st - Part 2
Erik’s tablet chimed as he finished up the dishes. He set aside the leftovers for later and went to see what DeeDee had to say.
He roared with laughter at how she ended the email. Why was she so stuck on finding out if he found the love he described? Her curiosity tickled him and now he had to decide how to navigate this conversation away from that kind of talk.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to talk about the non-existent once-in-a-lifetime kind of love that he wanted. But how do you explain to someone how you never felt you deserved it, so you never went looking for it? And therefore, you don’t have it.
Erik sighed and reached for something stronger than water to drink.
He took the tablet, the bottle and glass into the living room. He took a seat on the couch and cracked his knuckles and began to write his response for the Curious DeeDee. Erik shook his head and laughed again.
Erik hoped this would be enough to get DeeDee away from asking again, but something told him it wasn’t over.
---
DeeDee had devoured half of the pizza and the bottle of wine. She went to her room to  change out of her cleaning clothes into her favorite hoodie and a pair of yoga pants.
Her laptop went off when she returned from the back, and DeeDee jumped onto her couch in excitement. She couldn’t wait to find out that he found his true life long love.
If she couldn’t find it for herself, there was no reason for her to not want that for everyone else. Live vicariously through her new friend, Erik. Wait, could she consider him a friend? She scrunched her face at that rude thought and opened his email.

Hi Dee Dee,
I know you know I meant science, but I will answer one of those questions to quell your curiosity. I, also, commend you for pursuing your doctorate, and in advanced chemistry, no less.
So, it’s kind of a funny story, but I never meant to leave it in there.
Fun fact about the note, it is much older than you think. I was a civil engineering major during undergrad, when I originally wrote that note and left it in the book.
It happened when I was returning all my checked out books from the library. I was getting ready to move and needed to get them all in to avoid any replacement fees that would have prevented the conferral of my doctoral degree. So, I turned all of those books in without checking them. Which was definitely out of character for me. Especially since I lived by all my written notes for both class and research.
I discovered it was missing when I went to look for it after the move. I knew exactly where it was, but I knew I wouldn’t be going back to get it. So, it was just out there. Besides, I knew what it said by heart, so it was fine.
I will tell you I never expected to be discussing it years later though. It has been a very pleasant surprise.
Thank you,
E
“Of course, he would avoid the damn question.” She huffed out and poured another glass. It should not be that hard to answer, either he found it or is still in search of it. DeeDee’s hand stilled as she brought it to her lips. Nope, not going there tonight. She took a long drink of her wine.
She set the glass down, drew up her legs and crossed them before settling the computer on her lap. In a flurry, DeeDee’s fingers danced across her keyboard as she wrote her response. The alcohol heated her up to match her current mood.
---
Erik was chilling, in a half-assed attempt to watch the movie playing on TV. He had turned the volume down because the woman’s high pitched tone was grating on his nerves. He set the whiskey down on his coffee table and leaned back with his feet propped up and closed his eyes.
The easily recognizable email alert stirred him. Oh, she had time. It had only been about 20 minutes since he sent the last email. He sat up and opened up the email.

Mr. Erik,
So, you really aren’t going to answer that other question? Ok, that’s fine. I’ll let it slide for now.
Thank you for that. I have always wanted to work in the science field and I found toxicology while I was working on my Bachelors. I enjoy it and definitely appreciate having Dr. O as my mentor.
That is an interesting story. The one time you lost control and you left something like the note behind. Well, I guess it is just my luck that I found it and decided to look for you, huh? Oh, and you’re welcome.
What do you do now? I know you aren’t working in a lab or researching much anymore.
I read a little bit about you but I don’t know much about the work that the Wakandan Outreach Centers do. I would love to hear about it.
DeeDee
“That’s right. Quis, did say she was one of his students.” Then why was he worried about the person being a stalker. Erik set the tablet down and reached for his cell to text him.
Erik: Quis, why were you worried about DeeDee?
Quis: What?
Erik: About stalker potential?
Quis: Man, I didn’t even know it was her until she came and showed me a picture.
Erik: What picture?
Quis: Our Grad Student of the Year picture from the front of the Southern Digest.
Erik nodded his head, “So, Miss DeeDee knows what I look like. Or what I looked like.”
Quis: Everything good, man.
Erik: Yeah, yeah. Just wanted a little background, can’t be too sure of people asking for help these days.
Quis: DeeDee could never stoop to Karina’s level. She’s safe.
“The hell, she is.” Erik picked up his glass and took a sip. “This woman is becoming more dangerous, as we speak.”
Quis: So, I take it that you can be of use to her?
Erik: Uh yeah, she is very sharp.
Quis: You have no idea.
Erik: Thanks again. Oh, and I got the email, so I’m making plans now.
Quis: Great. Later, man.
“If Marquis vouched for her, then I have nothing to worry about.”
Erik dropped his phone back onto the couch and picked up the tablet.
“Here goes nothing.”
---
DeeDee was on Spotify. She picked a list at random and let the music take her away. She was slowly bodyrolling to Rome Flynn’s ‘Keep Me In Mind’ with a refreshed glass in hand, when her phone blinked. She walked over to it and saw that Erik had sent another email. She took a sip and picked up her phone to open his reply.

DeeDee,
How did I go from Erik to Mister?
I guess if you get to know me better than maybe you would find out the answer to your question.
But you are right. I tend to have a tight rein on things, it has always been that way. So, when I lost the note, I was irritated before I realized it wasn’t going to matter in the long run. But it appears to have landed in exceptional hands. *winks*
Well, I am in the family business. My family started the Wakandan Outreach Centers. The first one was opened up here in Oakland. I am the Director of Operations for it and all the Centers on the West Coast.
My first love will always be science. So, although, I may not be active in the field according to your definition. I still use everything I learned and conduct research with my cousins on a regular basis.
Since you know so much about me. Tell me something about DeeDee. Like how much longer do you have to complete your doctorate?
Mr. Erik
“Does he think that wink is gonna work on me?” DeeDee hid her smile behind the glass. “Damnit.”
She locked up the phone and walked back to her couch. DeeDee traded devices and picked up her laptop to reply to Erik.
“You don’t get to wink at me and then wash over the topic again.”
DeeDee pressed down hard on each key as she typed. She admired the fact that his family was close enough to work together on something as big as the successful operation of multiple Outreach Centers across the U.S. But she would not rest until he answered her.
“You aren’t cute, Mr. Erik.” She glanced over to the notebook, where the newspaper clipping of him and Dr. O was folded up inside. She recalled some dimples and a bright smile. He definitely towered over her 5’4 frame. He stood at least 2-3 inches taller than Dr. O, and she had to look up at him all the time. “Yeah, you not that cute.”
She clapped her hands and hit the ‘send’ button. Her phone went off. She saw Beverly sent something in the group chat.
Bev: Dinner and the club, tonight?
Phyll: You know I’m down.
DeeDee: No thanks. I’m covered for the rest of the year.
Bev: Come on, DeeDee.
DeeDee: Phyll, don’t you have work?
Phyll: Don’t try to change the subject, Dee.
Bev: You ain’t doing nothing important. It’s not like you have something to study for anymore.
DeeDee looked at her computer. “Come on, Erik. Give me a reason to stay home tonight.”
---
Erik just brought the glass to his lips when the tablet alerted him to another email. So, they were really doing this tonight? Back and forth emails in real time. He doesn’t even remember the last time, he looked forward to hearing from someone. It had been a while since someone had his attention like that. And after a few simple emails, he found that DeeDee squirmed her way into that space.
“What’s up Miss DeeDee?” He opened the email, “Ready to share?”

Mister Erik,
*pouts* Fine. I don’t know why you can’t just answer the question now, but ok.
That is wonderful. Sounds like the family business is treating you well. And you are enjoying what you do. That is all I want from my career. I want to do research and teach others. It’s a growing field so if we can get more men and women of color into STEM careers, I am here for it.
Something about me -- I’m an only child and a legacy student. Both of my parents attended Southern. In fact, it’s where they met all those years ago. And I like to read...like I can read anything and get lost in someone else’s world for hours.
But this is hopefully my final semester, I am preparing to defend my dissertation next month. Wish me luck!
DeeDee
“Her parents met at Southern?” Erik put the tablet down and walked over to his fireplace. He picked up the center picture from the mantle and closed his eyes briefly.  Two people were standing together in front of a large building. He rubbed his fingers over the top of the image of his parents. It read John B. Cade, it was the library at Southern University. Where his parents met and fell in love.
Erik took a deep breath and put the picture back up. He stood there and looked at the tablet.
“Is it possible that she could be?” He shook his head before he went down that road. The image of the last woman he thought could be his one and only flashed across his mind. He groaned out. Erik walked over to the couch and grabbed the tablet. “Only one way to find out.”
