What if Feanor wasn't the born the son of Finwe: AU musing
So I have been thinking a lot about different AU scenarios for the House of Feanor and naturally thought, what if Feanor wasn't born Finwe's son?
It's not even that much of a deviation, Miriel could have fallen for someone else while they all still lived in Cuivienen, and then Finwe could have fallen for Indis during the Great Journey. So they get married once they settle in Valinor. While Miriel goes on to give birth to Feanor with Not-Finwe.
I do think Feanor would be born to Miriel no matter who she married, and I think the results would be the same. He would be the spirit of fire that consumes her. So she goes into the Halls of Mandos with no certainty of ever returning.
It is unlikely that Not-Finwe, not being the High King and thus one of the Valar's chosen, would even think about taking a second wife. Even if Not-Finwe ended up developing feelings for another, I don't think an ordinary elf would consider petitioning the Valar for special dispensations. So it is more likely that Not-Finwe would just take joy in the one child he had and move on with his life.
It is also likely that Miriel would have come out of the Halls of Mandos, I don't know, by the time the Ambarussa are born. Because she did leave pretty soon after Finwe died. To me, this implies that she had been ready to leave but just couldn't because the Valar are against polygamy and don't believe in divorce.
However, would having a father whose love and attention he didn't have to share and his mother's return stop Feanor from rebelling?
No, I don't think so. One of the defining traits of Feanor is his thirst for knowledge: his desire to explore and learn. While the Valar insisted that the elves were free to leave Valinor, there was also no easy way to leave Valinor if you were a Noldo.
The Teleri had ships, but it didn't seem like they were running ferry services. Maybe Feanor could have traded for passage back to Middle-Earth. But it would be a one-way journey, and I can see Feanor being resentful of the fact that he has to leave everything he's built in Valinor just because he wants to see the lands his parents were born in.
In fact, I think Feanor, who is Not-Finwe's son, would resent a lot. He would resent having to pay tribute to Finwe, which I assume is something he might have to do. Especially if he, like I expect, prefers to have a workshop outside of Tirion when he's not the crown prince of the Noldo.
I also think he would still resent the influence of Indis and would still not like Fingolfin because Feanor was a Noldo supremacist in many ways. Finwe's family does become increasingly mixed and sort "all elves" and later "all elves plus men" as time goes on. But House of Feanor was 100% Noldo and largely remained 100% Noldo given that there is no canon evidence that any son of Feanor who was referenced to have a wife, had a non-Noldo wife.
So, I think Feanor would have been annoyed seeing his king get influenced by his Vanya wife. He probably would have been annoyed every time Fingolfin and especially Finarfin, who has a Teleri wife, commissions Feanor, the best elven smith in all of Valinor, for something. Especially since he would probably feel compelled to accept the commission because if he's not the crown prince, he probably doesn't have the same freedom to tell them to GTFO of his workshop.
I also think that Feanor, who is not the son of Finwe, would have actively started to plan to leave Valinor with his sons. Because it always struck me as a weird that Feanor was speaking against the Valar and claiming the elves were thralls of the Valar but seemingly made absolutely no plans to actually leave valinor.
He wasn't stockpiling food and building heaters so he could cross the Helcaraxe. Or learning to build ships from the Teleri or inventing airships (I have been thinking about a Noldo airship AU). It's a bit weird that genius Feanor had no plans on how to leave Valinor when he had been speaking against the elves being in Valinor.
The answer is obviously that as the crown prince of the Noldo, he couldn't openly plan to leave without losing his position. An action that would let Fingolfin win, in his mind, which is clearly something that cannot be allowed.
So I see a Feanor who is not the son of Finwe, actively work towards leaving Valinor and, because he plans to leave, stops contributing to Valinor society beyond what is required to keep both Finwe and Manwe, out of his business. I.e. he would create the Silmarils but would not show them to anyone outside of his sons. In fact, I see him building a lot of things he would never share with the wider Elven community.
Yes, I do see him one day packing up and leaving Valinor with his sons and whatever followers he can gather. Given that Feanor is said to have great power of speech on top of being a great smith, even without being the son of Finwe, I can see him having a large and fanatical following who dares to cross the ice with him because they too want to explore and experience new things beyond Valinor.
Don't get me wrong, he would 100% resent having to leave Valinor forever. As I said, there is a good chance that Tirion was likely filled with things Feanor made. But he was no longer going to be able to enjoy the fruits of his labour. Worse, he was leaving it for elves who were happy being thralls. But I think if he wasn't the crown prince, he wouldn't feel any need to "save the Noldo" as a whole.
I think canon Feanor sincerely believed that taking all the Noldo back to Cuivienen was the right thing to do, and that's why he didn't just build sleighs or ships for his own house and followers and leave. However, Feanor, who is not the Son of Finwe, would not necessarily feel obligations towards the Noldo as a whole and is more likely to look out for just his own.
To be clear, there is a good chance that Feanor would have led his sons and followers straight into actual thralldom because Sauron was waiting in Middle Earth. There is a good chance Melkor would have offered to "help" guide Feanor and his followers. Even if Melkor didn't personally go with them, he was eventually going to return and make a beeline to capture and enthral the Noldo.
Even if we exclude Sauron and Melkor, the fact remains that Elu Thingol was already lord of all Beleriand, not to mention the Avari had their own lords in Morwe and Nurwe. Feanor would consider them lesser to the Noldo, which would not go down well with any of them!
I saw a post wondering why the Edain did not seem to give the Sons of Feanor the same type of loyalty they gave Finrod and others. To be honest, its probably because the majority, if not all, Sons of Feanor came across as condescending. I mean, I don't think they meant to be condescending.
It's like Prince Philip, who was famous for committing racially insensitive gaffes. It's not that he was trying to insult whole cultures, it just so happened that what he thought were innocent remarks often gave offence.
I can see this happening a lot with Sons of Feanor and anyone who is not a Noldo, which translates to them not making as many friends outside of their own ethnicity.
Since this is a defining characteristic of House of Feanor, I don't think this changes in an AU where Feanor is not the son of Finwe. So I don't see Feanor living in harmony with the Sindar, the Avari, the Dwarves and later men.
The best case scenario for Feanor is that he comes to Middle Earth, goes south and finds land that's unsettled, which is still possible before the coming of man, since the elves of Middle Earth weren't numerous enough to be all over the continent, and builds a city where he can rule as he pleases at least until he inevitably ends-up in conflict with someone. Because I just don't see Feanor living in harmony in Arda Marred, whether or not he was the son of Finwe and whether or not his mother returned from the Halls of Mandos while he was still in Valinor.
Finally, since I love Russingon, I think a Maedhros who is not the grandson of Finwe would have an interesting dynamic with Prince Fingon who valiantly and openly pursues him. I think it would be an interesting dynamic because the not-grandson-of-Finwe Maedhros would not be equal to Fingon.
Now elven hierarchy is not always clear cut. But there definitely is one and even Eol is supposed to be a kin of Elu Thingol. I.e. he's not the elven equivalent of a peasant. So even with him, Tolkien didn't have the White Lady of the Noldo marry someone NOT related to an Elven king.
So an AU where Feanor is not the son of Finwe, Russingon can have a hierarchical element that could be interesting to explore. Because it would in many ways be like a Prince pursuing the son of a highly regarded but still not noble Feanor.
Add to that the fact that Maedhros might not feel he can refuse Fingon's advances if only to make sure his father's rebellious intent to go against Finwe and return to Middle Earth is not discovered. We just don't know what Finwe would do if someone for whom he is not blinded by love was the one instigating rebellion against him and the Valar. Even if the rebellion amounted to simply wanting to return to Middle Earth peacefully.
It would still end in absolute tragedy but that is the nature of Arda Marred.

Hello! This is @rebel-author-chick and you are on my OC Creator Bingo card! I gotta say your OCs sound amazing and I will definitely be checking out their stories!
1. Florence Hargreeves, what are her powers? Which sibling does she get along with most? What did she think about Vanya's book?
2. What are Carola's thoughts about Thor? Does Loki trying to take over earth cause a rift between them? Does she have any powers?
3. What are Olive's hobbies? How did she feel seeing Steve for the first time after he got frozen? Did she and Bucky have a favorite thing to do together?
4. What is AU!Rain's relationship with Audrey? Who are her closest friends at Auradon (besides Ben)?
5. How does Rain feel when she meets Rapunzel and Eugene for the first time after finding out the truth? How much does she take after Gothel? Does she ever get to express her feelings about being taken away from her family to Gothel?
omg hi!!!! im so glad you like my ocs and i love the ones you chose, super excited to talk to you more if you wanna stick around my blog! answers below the cut!
1. Florence Hargreeves, what are her powers? Telekinesis and mind control! Which sibling does she get along with most? Klaus! They had similar coping mechanisms and personalities! What did she think about Vanya's book? Hm, she understood why they wrote it, but was really hurt by what was said about her and her everyone else’s trauma was ignored.
Tumblr media
2.What are Carola's thoughts about Thor? Besties!!! In another life they so get together. Does Loki trying to take over earth cause a rift between them? Yes!!!! Cara is on earth at the time and he tries to get her to join him and she’s like ‘no lol’. Does she have any powers? no! but she does know a few spells! im thinking she lowkey becomes an asgardian witch
Tumblr media
3. What are Olive's hobbies? In the 40s, she was really interested in cosmetology, now she likes journaling. How did she feel seeing Steve for the first time after he got frozen? Oh she threw up. She saw him on TV and was so shocked and anxious she had to go to the loo. Did she and Bucky have a favorite thing to do together? Bucky liked dancing, Liv liked the cinema. They LOVED people watching.
Tumblr media
4. What is AU!Rain's relationship with Audrey? They’re friends, in the most basic way. Audrey thinks she’s better than Rayne, Rayne thinks Audrey needs to go to therapy. Who are her closest friends at Auradon (besides Ben)? Jane! I’m thinking of maybe giving her some oc besties but shes a bit of a loner, some could say she was destined to be with Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay.
Tumblr media
5. How does Rain feel when she meets Rapunzel and Eugene for the first time after finding out the truth? How much does she take after Gothel? Does she ever get to express her feelings about being taken away from her family to Gothel?
Okay imma answer this one as a chunk because they all link together really well! I’m a firm believer in nurture over nature, but that includes the society you grew up in. So Rain learnt a LOT from her friends. But still, before going to Auradon, she has no problems manipulating and using people, she got that from Gothel.
So! at the end of D1, Rain is skeptical about Gothel (and so is everyone else lol), and has spent the weekend with the a Fitzherberts cos Ruby is her roommate, and that family is like 👀. SO she goes to the isle and confronts gothel and there’s a screaming match. Rain returns to o her dorm and Ruby us in bed and she just gets in next to her and SOBS.
Rain is avoiding it all for a month lol, and Ruby is still her roommate, and Ethan is still running photography club, and Ben is trying to get her to see her parents. She’s confused and upset, but also comforted when she meets them again.

20 for Vanya?
20. What-ifs/Alternate Timelines
I have a lot of what-ifs and alternate timelines for Vanya lmao, especially ones that prevent the apocalypse because I’m a sucker for a happy ending tbh
What if Vanya was included? Why not? Klaus’s powers weren’t useful for missions, Allison’s story for Claire was literally like “yeah Klaus got distracted by ghosts in the background lol” so it’s not like a kid without offensive powers couldn’t do it
you have rebellious Vanya aus, where she decides, like some neglected children do, so act out. If her father isn’t going to acknowledge anything good about her, she’s going to make him acknowledge the bad. Punishment might be the only time he pays attention to her, after all.
(let’s call this an au where the pills suppress her powers but not so much her emotions)
So you have an au where she sneaks out and joins the missions. She breaks into the mausoleum and picks Klaus up and stares her father down with a challenge in her eyes.
Five vanishes, and Vanya gets worse. She plays her violin at 2 in the morning. She refuses to eat her broccoli. she teams up with diego to see who can piss dad off the most
(her and Diego actually get along very well in this sort of au, honestly)
Vanya gets out and plays the violin and gets angry. She plays with fury and fire and gets second chair, because Helen is actually really very good. But she makes Helen work for it. Helen isn’t secure in her position, she always knows that Vanya is a step away from taking it from her
and maybe that should make them enemies, but it doesn’t. They’re rivals. Helen respects the hell out of Vanya, and Vanya can’t help but admire the woman who makes the most difficult pieces look effortless
(RIVALS TO LOVERS: VIOLIN EDITION)
Vanya writes her book. Except she kicks down Diego’s boiler room door and is like “DIEGO”
“WHAT”
“I WANT TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT HOW MUCH DAD FUCKING SUCKS”
“I’LL BE RIGHT THERE”
as one of the rebel kids, Vanya actually got along well with Klaus as well since she helped him sneak out and 100% also smoked at least some weed with him because it would piss off Reggie tbh though she didn’t get into the harder drugs like he did
(showing up absolutely plastered to breakfast when they were sixteen was hilarious even if the laps they had to run around the block were not)
anyway Klaus crashes at her apartment sometimes, with supervision, because she loves Klaus but he has a problem and has stolen from her before but he’s still her brother but regardless
Klaus-Diego-Vanya sleepovers where they brainstorm the book to shit talk their father. Honestly it’s kind of a blast. They all get super wine drunk and end up watching Mary Poppins together with some Very Loud Opinions about nannies in general tbh
klaus throwing popcorn at the screen: BOO WHY WAS OUR CHILDHOOD NOT A MUSICAL???
diego: idk if you can have cheery musicals about child soldiers
vanya: i mean if they can have a musical about child labor in factories and the starvation of the workers in oliver twist you could do something with child superheroes
klaus: EXACTLY thank you vanya
they publish the book (luther is uNHAPPY, vanya dedicates her book to ‘all my siblings who survived the Reginald Regime but especially those who didn’t’, and she gifts Reggie a copy that says “fuck you lol” and is signed by her, diego, and klaus), they continue living, they go to the funeral when reggie kicks the bucket
and then five shows up, feral and aching
and five tells vanya about the apocalypse, and vanya thinks about their father saying time travel messed with the mind, and then she thinks - fuck the old man he was wrong about her (ordinary, fuck that, she’s Vanya Fucking Hargreeves) and he was probably wrong about Five, too
and Five is wholeheartedly believed
“Let me call Diego,” Vanya says when Five tells her about the eye, “I bet he could totally wear a police uniform and get info about the eye. And if not, I’m absolutely sure Klaus could improvise a solution. He’s good at that.”
“Klaus??” Five asks, vaguely suspicious.
“We don’t talk about the Sleepover of 2012.” Vanya intones solemnly, and refuses to answer any further questions on the topic.
Harold Jenkins comes to the apartment and tries to woo Vanya or whatever, and Vanya is kind of like... “Look, Leonard. I can be your teacher for violin. It’s my job. But I am in a relationship. And also like, super gay. If you have a problem with that then I am not the teacher for you.”
Actually scratch Diego and Klaus getting called, which they do, Vanya looks at them and her thirteen year old brother and is like “wait. actually i know someone infinitely better to crack this case wide open.”
“Who?” Five, Klaus, and Diego all ask
“My girlfriend.” Vanya says proudly, called Helen up.
And Helen walks into the building like she’s at fucking war and has such demanding confidence that they just give her the information she seeks and apologize for inconveniencing her.
“Hey Vanya are we still on for date night tomorrow?” Helen casually asks after, and Five kind of wants to be her when he grows up honestly after watching her verbally eviscerate Lance or whatever the fuck his name is
“Yeah.” Vanya confirms, “Unless there’s other apocalypse stuff to do?”
“You take all the time you need, honey.” Helen says warmly, “After all the more time you take the less you have to practice.”
“I’m gonna destroy the concert piece and you know it.” Vanya threatens.
Helen sniffs, “Okay, whatever you say second chair.”
and then they kiss and Helen ditches and the others just kind of look at Vanya judgingly
“In fairness, she’s very hot and very talented.” Vanya defends herself.
Klaus nods sagely. Vanya nods back. He gets it.
“Concert piece?” Diego asks, because he has priorities.
“Yeah, I’ve already asked for tickets for all of you and you will be attending Diego.” Vanya smiles prettily with all her teeth.
“When is it?” Five asks
“April 1st.” Vanya tells him, “And no that isn’t an April Fools joke. You will attend and you will marvel at my skill. And maybe run interference between Helen and Allison because I’m kind of afraid they’re going to rip each others throats out to establish dominance.”
“That’s the day of the apocalypse.” Five informs her.
“Not on my goddamn watch.” Vanya says, because her family will attend her fucking concert and they will make awkward small talk with her girlfriend and the fucking apocalypse has better lay down and get over itself because nothing can stop Vanya’s goddamn plans
“I can investigate Meritech more.” Diego offers, because Lance-or-whatever-his-name-is is clearly shady as shit, “I have police contacts I could go through. Hey Vanya, your concert tickets include a plus one?”
“They can.” Vanya shrugs.
“Sweet, let me see if Patch can come.”
“She’s way too good for you, bro.”
“Shut your goddamn mouth.”
Anyway the point is they all go home, and Diego goes to talk to his police contacts and Five is definitely at home for when Hazel and Cha-Cha attack the mansion, oops.
“Whomst the FUCK.” Vanya yells, kicking Hazel in the crotch because she’s Vanya Fucking Hargreeves she knows self defense thank you very much
“Ah.” Five says. “Hazel. How’s it going.”
“Just peachy.” Hazel wheezes, “Why’d you betray the Commission?”
“Well, you know. They cut the dental. That was really the last straw.” Five says, sarcastically.
“The dental.” Hazel echoes back, nodding very seriously, “I fucking know. You know physical therapy isn’t even covered anymore?”
“No shit?” Five says, “I mean you’d think with a job as physical as ours...”
“I know.” Hazel howls, vindicated.
“Five.” Vanya says, rolling her eyes, “The house?”
“Oh, right.” Five frowns, looking at Hazel, “I mean. Can you like, leave? And not come back?”
“‘Fraid not.” Hazel actually sounds somewhat apologetic, “You know what the Commission is like. They’re really gunning for you.”
Five nods, because really what did he expect, “Can you leave like, temporarily? I mean you’d pretty clearly outnumbered. I don’t even know where Cha-Cha is, but judging by the furious yelling she probably met our sister and brother and Luther is hard to kill. Trust me, if he wasn’t we would have killed him when we were like, eight. But for real, can you get out of our house? I mean. Storming the den? Seriously? What kind of information did they even give you?”
“They didn’t give us any information.” Hazel responds back, sounding appropriately outraged, “They didn’t even tell us you could teleport.”
“Well that’s just rude. You’d think they wanted you dead or something.” Five muses, “But seriously, get out of my house.”
“Yeah, that’s fair.” Hazel admits, and leaves, because honestly Hazel is chill like that and knows when he’s lost. And Hazel also has a lot to think about. Like the fact that the Commission sucks and doesn’t even have dental, and how pretty the donut lady is.
and Vanya is just like... okay. Weird. Is that going to happen again? Probably? I mean. Okay, this day has already been so goddamn weird. This week, honestly.
And they keep getting attacked by the Commission. And Vanya finds out someone broke into her apartment and stole her meds. What the fuck.
“Did your shitty assassin friends do this?” Vanya asks, waving an empty pill bottle.
“Why would they?” Five asks, honestly confused.
“Because they’re assholes?” Vanya says, honestly outraged.
“You got me there.” Five admits.
The combined forces of Diego-and-Patch (because Patch is actually thrilled that Diego is asking for help regarding an actual fucking crime) figure out that the eyeballs are being sold illegally
Klaus is not kidnapped so he’s fine, just tagging along and living his best life, however this also means that Klaus does not steal the briefcase and Hazel and Cha-Cha are fine
Vanya keeps Five close at hand because frankly she doesn’t want him to leave again and she did really miss him. Also if she does save the world she can lord it over Helen’s head forever.
And so Five is around when Vanya’s powers manifest, probably because they just got targeted by commission goons again because they’re trying real hard to kill five and separate Vanya
“Holy SHIT.” Five says, very intelligently, “You have POWERS.”
“Wow. Gonna have to write a fucking sequel to the shit-talking-dad book.” Vanya says, honestly a little light headed.
And then Vanya finds out her powers are sound based.
“Oh no.” Vanya says, “Where the fuck are my pills. I am not relearning how to play the violin with-powers a few days before the big concert Five, what the fuck.”
“But you need to learn to control them!” Five protests, “They’re your powers!”
“They’re a goddamn inconvenience is what they are.” Vanya states, “I mean, what am I going to do with them? Stop a bank robbery with the Umbrella Academy? Yeah, no thanks, that ship has sailed and sunk to the bottom of the ocean Titanic style. I’ll figure them out when I’m not in danger of blasting the audience halfway across the continent.”
“Yeah.” Five admits, “That’s fair.”
“Besides, if I’ve been on that shit as long as I have, and it’s been a long time, I cannot even IMAGINE what quitting cold turkey will do.” Vanya points out, very sensibly, like a siblings who has watched Klaus go through withdrawal symptoms more than once.
“Maybe there’s extra at the manor?” Five suggests, “Pogo probably knows.”
“Oh yeah I bet Pogo knows something.” Vanya mutters maybe a little bitterly.
They go back to the mansion and the Commission is honestly pulling their hair out tbh, and they ask Pogo who kind of pales and is like “UHHHH YES I CAN GET VANYA EXTRA PILLS” and goes to get them from whatever stash
“Fucking sweet.” Vanya whispers, entirely done with this situation, “The only adult male role model I had and he hid my powers from me and betrayed me. Love that for us.”
Five shrugs, “I mean, you’re right. All of our adult role models were all kinds of fucked up.”
“You vanished when we were 13.” Vanya says, “Didn’t you find like, any other adults ever?”
“Oh let me tell you about the Handler.” Five says, and proceeds to do just that. Because let’s be real, the Handler was the only human interaction Five had after forty odd years alone it was pretty damn important
Vanya, on the other hand, has strong plans to eviscerate the Handler should the two ever meet because Five deserved way better than to be forcibly made into an assassin?? honestly fuck that woman
that’s it that’s the au
Vanya finds out she has powers and is like “i have a LIFE i don’t want to interrupt it with bullshit POWERS,,, also going cold turkey off my meds seems like a bad idea if I don’t want to deal with withdrawal symptoms during my concert for fucks sake, my gf would never let me live it down if i skipped”
so vanya takes her meds, does NOT destroy the world, makes every one of her siblings go to the concert and even invites Hazel and Agnes after Hazel betrays Cha-Cha to join team No-Apocalypse.
and then introduces them all to her girlfriend
“Holy shit Vanya.” Helen deadpans, “Your family is all kinds of fucked up.”
“I know.” Vanya says, aggrieved, “It’s been a long fucking week. Want to go camping and help me figure out my cool sound based powers? Bet they’ll make me a better violin player than you.”
“I think the fuck not.” Helen hisses, always up for a challenge, “Let’s do this. Me and my violin vs. you and your dumb baby powers. You’re on.”
“FAMILY CAMPING TRIP.” Klaus hollers, with all the enthusiasm in his little heart.
“Holy shit this is going to be such a disaster, I just know it.” Diego mutters.
“Shut up, it’ll be nice.” Allison says, elbowing Diego with her pointy pointy elbows.
“It’s going to be a shitshow.” Vanya says serenely, because it is. That’s just who their family is.
Wouldn’t have it any other way, though

Okay I just had a vision. You mentioned remus having a power like Ben Hargreeves (RIP) in your marvel au post thingy. So mayhaps what would you say about each side if they were in the umbrella academy verse (With or with out Reggie Neglectful)? Hmm? sorry if this is annoying.
RIGHT AWAY REMUS IS KLAUS ALRIGHT
Patton is Luther. I know yall might come at me for this because everryyyyboddyyy hates Luther bla bla bla but HEY, isn't Patton always taking on the leading role of Thomas' mind and acts like he knows everything?
Roman is Diego, I know the aesthetic doesn't fit, but always working to prove himself to be a hero and rebelling against daddy's wishes sounds pretty Roman to me. Also, himbo.
Janus is Allison, what's with all the deception surrounding her powers and always wishing not to use it because people don't believe her no more. Allison may seem a bit too soft for Janus' sharp wits and cunning personality though.
Logan for Five? I kinda dislike Five but I'm so up for Logan being a smartass and jumping around murdering people and complaining about how stupid his teamates are and why is nobody listening to me when I always know best!!!
Virgil fits both Ben and Vanya, though Ben's got that little bit of sweetness mixed with sarcasm attitude that I see in Virgil. (but Virgil playing violin?? give me it give me it give me it)
Why, how dare you, show for having more than 6 main characters! how can you do that now i can't fit them all in unless some orange fuck turns up

THE BOOK OF LIFE TUA AU
(please understand that by AU, I mean they share an incredibly small amount of things in common with the original source material which I barely remember BUT the “story” takes place in the setting of the film) (not to be misleading or anything :p)
(BEWARE: abuse, murder, war, violence, death, forbidden love (on more than one account), surprise surprise everybody's sad, yeah head's up this is way sadder than the movie is sorry, okay enjoy i guess, bye, etc.)
(If you can handle watching Umbrella Academy, this will be fine for you.)
Tumblr media
(Maria) Allison grew up alongside Ray and Luther, the three of them an inseparable team known for their mischief and ferocity. Allison was always the balance between the two, carrying both Luther’s bravery and Ray’s wit as she led them into battle against imaginary friends and foes, living every day with a delighted laugh. Though she had a sister, Vanya, who she was very close to at one point, Vanya perished in a fire when they were all seven, leaving Allison with a hole in her heart and a crushing case of pyrophobia. Following the incident, Allison became even rowdier and soon completely uncontrollable, terrifying the town with her strength and wit, as well as her newfound imaginary friends, though she assured everyone she met that she was simply deeply religious. After all, she too was caught in the fire that killed her sister, and that night she met La Muerte and Xibalba as they came for Vanya’s soul, smiling at her through the flames. Now, she prays to them nearly every day, for safety and for love, but her perceived insanity eventually lands her in a convent to be made into a good Christian girl, her father Reginald hoping that she could eventually become a good wife to Luther one day. (Allison, naturally, rolled her eyes at such a stupid notion. She’ll be the troublesome wife of anyone she damn well pleases.) At the Catholic school, however, Allison only becomes more of a rebel, learning how to wield a sword as well as a pen. She becomes a fearsome warrior and knowledgeable woman, breaking the rules to fall in love with a girl named Natalie at the school, as well as to challenge the virtues of the nunrey’s priest, Patrick. Eventually Patrick grows tired of her shenanigans and sends Allison back home, where she continues to write to Natalie and fight back against the oppressive systems around her. Back home, she begins to fall for both of the boys she once knew, but hates how they fight over her, as if she’s some prize to be won. But when Natalie dies of pneumonia, Allison stashes all of her letters in her dresser and accepts Luther’s stuttered proposal out of grief, the fight snuffed out of her like the flame from a candle.
(Monolo) Ray grew up alongside Sissy, his foster sister, in the town’s youth hostel. She was Vanya’s best friend until her death, and three years later succumbed to smallpox, leaving Ray quiet and withdrawn without her. (Luckily, her and Vanya’s bullies, Leonard and Carl, died in a carriage accident, getting what they deserved.) Sissy and Vanya visit on every Day of the Dead though, and it brings Ray and Allison closer together, the two of them becoming a force against the world, and Ray falls in love with her easily from there. She is his light in the dark, and when she goes out, everything in Ray’s life starts to unravel. His foster brother Dave is sent off to war, becoming deeply religious as he develops an intimate relationship with the god of sin. But Dave is sent home in a coffin, and Ray receives his remains. Though not a particularly religious man, Ray buries his brother beneath the marigolds as per tradition and is visited by Klaus personally, who tells him that he hopes to never see Dave again because if he did, it would mean he had been forgotten. Understanding the threat for what it is, Ray accepts Klaus’ favor despite his disagreement with his values, believing in peace and love instead of war and hate. A brilliant negotiator, Ray becomes known for his gentle temperament and soft music, often playing the guitar deep into the sunset. Homeless and wandering, Luther is the only constant left in his life, and as time moves on, so too does Ray from Allison, eventually letting her go when she returns, realizing slowly that she is no longer the person haunting his dreams.
(Joaquin) Luther grew up with Pogo, his maybe-father. He inherited his gentle nature from their time together, passing it on to everyone he meets. Though good friends with Vanya from a young age, he was unable to save her from the fire, persuading Ray and Allison to stay back as well when they wanted to run back in for her. That night he was visited by La Muerte, who chastised him for not doing all he could to save such a little girl. A child himself, Luther resented this angry god, choosing to leave behind acceptable religion for the wayward path of worshipping Xibalba. Losing Allison only pushed him further away from La Muerte’s kind morals, and eventually he simply gave into Xibalba’s allure completely, his faith being one of the driving factors behind his and Ray’s conflict. Adopted by Reginald after Allison’s departure, he trained to become one of the greatest warriors in all of history, Xibalba’s unwavering favor winning him countless battles. But while his heroism earns him mansions and money, Ray’s heart remains like stone to him, rebelling against violence and preferring peace, which Luther cannot keep. When the town goes to war with the bandits, only a sacrifice can keep them alive, and Luther tries to take his chance. Instead, however, Allison pushes him out of the way with a kiss, shoving him stumbling back into Ray’s tired arms. Devastated at the loss of the woman he’s spent his entire life loving, Luther drops to his knees and offers up his soul to Xibalba and La Muerte, telling them to use it to rebuild the burned bridge between their lands. Alas, Xibalba refuses, unwilling to kill such a loyal servant, but La Muerte gives Luther his favor, finally, telling him that he shall see Allison again, do not despair. In mourning, Ray and Luther live on, but come their first visit from Allison on the Day of the Dead, they are married in a quiet midnight ceremony, Allison’s marigolds raining over them.
(The Sword Twins) Five grew up long ago, trapped in a cold and dark mansion with no one but the abusive Handler for company. She kept him in dresses, refusing to accept him as a boy, and he spent most of his prisoner days with Dolores, a statue in the Handler’s garden. Eventually, the Handler grows bored of having such a defiant servant and tries to kill Five, but she underestimates all of the impulses she’s trained into him for thirteen years, leaving her with an axe through her head and Five a free man. Still, he stays within the mansion’s walls for forty-five years, too afraid to brave the world outside, Dolores his only company. On his forty-fifth birthday, Xibalba and La Muerte come for him with an offer of family and freedom. Insane and drunk, Five agrees, and his new parents restore him to his thirteenth body and let him be, Dolores kept in the Land of the Remembered just in case Five should ever need her again. But he seems happy now, flitting between earth and the lands, Lila wrapped around his shoulders with sass and snark on his lips. With a devilish grin, he kills rotten souls for his mother and saves sweet ones for his father, the most brilliant warrior there’s ever been following the loosest morals there ever were too. Fascinated by the world and his power over it, Five is an enigma without end, the adopted child of gods and, of course, a little shit.
(Xibalba) Klaus rules the Land of Forgotten, and he fucking hates it. He knows he’s there because he’s only ever loved the dead, and there’s no one to remember him, but fuck, he loved somebody alive once. Diego. Good fucking lord, he loved Diego. Their story went something like this: Klaus was a thief and a murderer, a drug addict and a mad hatter. Diego was the country’s decorated hero, a vigilante warrior who had damn near won wars all by himself. Though they met when Diego was hired to save a town from Klaus’ treachery, he instead fell in love with the bright young soul, and Klaus left with Diego’s heart as his only bounty. But it quickly became enough, and the two went on the run together, wild and free and in love. They kept their romance a secret by battling one another almost every day, but still they spent every night tangled around each other, their laughter loud and their eyes alight. But unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and true love is no exception. One night, dancing across the rooftops under the moon, Klaus is shot mid-laugh, choking as he topples from the roof. Diego screams his name, diving to catch him in his arms, and they sit there trembling, tears in their eyes as the men of the village look on confusedly, watching as the monster that had terrorized them for months was cradled in the arms of their guardian angel. Klaus touched Diego’s cheek, smiling at his eyes, and Diego managed to choke out only his name before Klaus went limp in his arms. Diego fell apart into grief, and without thought slaughtered the entire village of people he had sworn to protect, burning all of their photographs and bodies so they could not be remembered, blinded in his rage. He was captured without a fight by rangers from the next town over, and spent a year in prison, mad in his mourning. He would not speak or look at anyone, simply existing as a body with no soul inside. After that year, his trial finally came, and he was hung on a crowded morning, staring at the sun with his first and last words in a year and forever: I’ll see you soon, mi amor. He reawakened on a bridge made of marigolds, between the lands, but only had a moment to focus on that before he caught sight of Klaus, head thrown back in laughter, draped in purple and white and blue and gold and looking as beautiful as he did the day Diego lost him. Beaming, Diego ran for him, the two lovers reunited in a heart-beating kiss in the middle of the bridge, only to feel the marigolds falling to the wind beneath them. They tried to hold on, but the air was too strong, and Klaus could only watch as warm, beautiful Diego was whisked away from him once more, into the Land of the Remembered as Klaus sunk into the Land of the Forgotten. Cursed to be La Muerte and Xibalba now that the old gods had perished, their pure souls were kept in halves, the two men unable to meet or touch on any day beyond the Day of the Dead. Devastated at the loss of his lover for a second time, Klaus delved back into sin, the demons of his life too much to handle without ambrosia and apples from Eden. His ghosts, who used to follow him when he was one of the living too, were beside him always, and he only sank deeper into himself as time went on. Angry at Klaus for letting himself be ruined, Diego snipes and bites at Klaus any chance he gets, leaving the true loves torn apart by morality, or rather, lack thereof. Klaus continues to spread a drop of his decimated soul into every pair of lovers he can find, bitter at the unfairness of his unhappy ending and determined to keep others from it as well. Though Five tries to push them back together, Klaus and Diego remain apart in both body and mind, as though their hearts still beat as one, their love is, forever, dead.
(La Muerte) Diego grew up with his mother Grace in a small little town, a deadpan and angry soul. He spent most of his days alone, praying to La Muerte and training under Grace’s arm to become a brilliant warrior. His knives and bullets were said to move however he wished, as if by magic, and as he grew, his eyes began to twinkle and his nature became gentler and more trusting. On his eighteenth birthday his mother confessed that she herself was La Muerte, Xibalba being a bitter old man named Reginald, and advised him to enjoy life while he could, reasoning that both she and Reginald were not long for this world and that their thrones would both fall to the purest souls soon. Sure enough, her human body soon passed away, but he could still feel her soul in the world, and kept her rosary with him at all times, travelling the country in hopes of spreading her kindness and joy. (Unfortunately, Reginald held onto his human body for as long as he could, for centuries, unable to let himself die even though his power had been long since cleansed from him.) Diego lived by a strict moral code, refusing to bend his ideals for anybody… that is, until Klaus came along, to whom he always used to say, I love you too much, with a fond smile, as if it was a bad thing. But sure enough, it turned out to be, as the lovers lost each other and themselves in the process. Now La Muerte himself, Diego abides by the rules of life and death and watches over the mortals his once beloved so childishly fucks with, miserable in his own kingdom of endless joy. His son Five makes the days better, often bringing him new reaped souls as gifts with their blood still on his teeth (Diego just pats his head and sighs; he’s very cute when he’s being murderous, as we all know), and he still prays to Grace, though he knows she is long gone from the world. Ironically enough for a god who relies on them, Diego has an unadulterated hatred of marigolds, refusing to keep any within his palace walls, the only place in the entire Land of the Remembered where marigolds cannot be found. He spends most of his days wandering aimlessly, conversing quietly with Lila and Eudora, who he grants their human forms temporarily to visit him. Though his family continues to beg for his reunion with Klaus, Diego remains alone, the two of them bickering and snarking all throughout their one day a year together, too angry to see past their tragedy to their blessings. Diego only agrees to the stupid wager in the first place because he sees the same earnest, pure love in Ray’s eyes for Allison and Luther as he himself to hold for Klaus. But the wager is called off when Allison dies and Ray and Luther marry, leaving Diego without reason to talk to Klaus again. It’s not until the Day of the Dead seven years after the whole disaster that Klaus finally risks taking his hand again. Blankly, sadly, Diego asks him, Why would you risk your immortality for this? as he knows that the gods of the two worlds cannot touch without the risk of throwing the entire world off-balance. Klaus shrugs. I love you too much, he answers, and Diego sobs, looking at him with glittering eyes as Klaus grins, tugging him in for a kiss and tangling their souls together for the first time in millennia, their hearts once again beating beneath their skeletal skin.
(The Candlemaker) Ben was born to - well, nobody knows. His only family is Klaus, who stands as his soulmate, the other half of him, and Ben had always seemed content with that, at least when he was alive. The purest soul there ever was, Ben fell to his death during a heist with Klaus, earning him an immortal role in the afterlife, from which he watched Klaus beat back his resulting fear of heights with Diego’s help, the two of them more in love than any humans they’d ever known. Ben read the Book of Life over and over again, hoping to find some sort of loophole, any sort of loophole, to get him back to earth to help his soulmate. He knew the story of Grace and Reginald, and it was a bloody, maddening, and tragic one, something Ben would never wish on his worst enemy, let alone his favorite person in the entire world. Knowing from handwritten letters from Grace that Klaus and Diego were destined to become the next Xibalba and La Muerte, the two of whom are doomed to be apart for all eternity, Ben tried more and more desperately to reach Klaus, trying to save him from such a horrific fate. Instead, Klaus fell earlier than expected, and Ben was left with both his and Diego’s black candles all burnt out, though they were once the brightest blazes anyone had ever seen. Helpless on the sidelines as Klaus and Diego broke apart slowly, Ben busied himself by harboring the newly deceased and helping them cross over, eventually falling in love with Jill, a mortal who he would often see when crossing between the worlds. She tried to kill herself to be with him, like the fools in love we all are, but humans cannot be with immortals, and so her candle remains half-lit, as she is half-alive and half-dead, guarding the doors to the afterlife without ever being allowed to enter them herself. Ben found Five, and nudged Klaus and Diego towards him, hating cruel humans more than anything in the world and doing everything he could to spite them. Only when Klaus and Diego allow themselves to love again does Ben finally move on, Jill’s soul harbored on to the heavens. Bursting into marigolds, Ben’s soul stretches across the ravine between the lands, acting as the bridge connecting Klaus and Diego’s hearts forevermore. (And they love him, they love him, they love him; my god, do they love him.)
(Dove) Eudora grew up in wartimes, a pirate on the high seas in a red sash with half her hair hacked off, her eyes smudged with kohl. Though she pillaged and plundered, she was a kind soul, and her goodness won her Diego’s constant favor. In return, she prayed to La Muerte every day, her only consistency the beaded rosary around her neck proclaiming him her master. With brilliant swordsmanship and a sharp tongue, Eudora’s reign as a pirate queen seemed as if it would never end, until suddenly it did - when she met Lila, docked in Mexico one day centuries ago. They fell fast, and they fell hard, but alas, their love story ended in tragedy much like Klaus and Diego’s, with their ship being blown to bits by French cannonballs. Badly wounded, Eudora passed out while treading water and fell to the sea, but Diego collected her soul with compassion, making her his second-in-command as a sign of respect for her eternal devotion. She now sits on his shoulder as a wrinkled and wisened dove, her beauty lost in the end of her life. She knows Diego only keeps her around because he pities her, because she reminds him of himself, but that’s not Eudora’s concern. She spends her days travelling back and forth between the lands, often meeting Lila on the broken bridge, and tells Diego of Klaus’ state of affairs, helping the two lovers communicate even as they are eternally apart. A judge of souls, Eudora reigns by Diego’s side, no longer a queen but close enough, I suppose.
(Snake) Lila became an orphan of the plague at barely four, and was raised within a convent, eventually becoming a nun herself despite her contempt for so-called god. She slowly came to worship Xibalba, delving into a life of sin under her sisters’ noses and eventually harboring a demon within her skin, standing as Xibalba’s most faithful servant. So of course it was only fate that she meet and fall in love with La Muerte’s own favorite, the lovely Eudora, who Lila followed to the ends of the earth on a pirate ship, the sun setting behind them. In deep purple robes and with glowing red eyes, Lila ruled the seas by her lover’s side, only to lose her to the raging waves. Grief-stricken and furious beyond all manner and reason, Lila takes the ghost of Five, her best friend, with her when she travels back to her convent, burning the church to the ground with herself inside, her body melting like tar. She awakens in the Land of the Forgotten, a snake around Xibalba’s shoulders, but she can truly have no regrets, remaining Klaus’ loyal friend just as Eudora remains Deigo’s, even if this means that they can never truly be together, together, ever again. (Such is the fate of ill-advised lovers.)

Raine?
a song that reminds me of them:
hmm okay I hadn’t started a raine playlist yet so I just got a little distracted on spotify heh.
anyways someone had thus always to tyrants by the oh hellos on their raine playlist and I liked that choice. I also think of Lindsey Stirling a lot just cause she’s also a violinist. I also think Raine might get a kick out of electro swing?? So now I’m think of caravan palace songs as well (dragons is a fave song of mine from them)
what they smell like:
how cliche is it of me to say rain
an otp:
raeda <3
a notp:
raine x being anywhere near the emperors coven
favorite platonic/familial relationships:
obviously raine and the rest of the batts are super cute! I think they all entered this rebel group with the same goal and this idea that they should only be there if they have “nothing left to lose” like raine said to eda but in doing so they kinda all found and now care about each other.
a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with:
hmm raine has not been here very long to have too much in the way of popular headcanons let alone ones I’d disagree with. I have seen some people throw out the idea that Raine should be the one to adopt Hunter and idk how I feel about that one?? Idk as far as we know we’ve never seen them even interact or acknowledge their existence so it’s not an idea I’m into
the position they sleep in:
trapped by coven mark I feel like they’d be a stomach sleeper idk I’m just going with it
a crossover au i’d love to see them in:
I have no clue on the logistics or how it’d work but Raines making me think of another violinist fictional character I love, Vanya Hargreaves, so now I’m like, umbrella academy au!
favorite outfit they’ve ever worn:
hmm I think i like the flashback outfit just a smidge more than the one they wear currently!

I have made an AtLA AU for The Umbrella Academy and I am cursing you with its existence as I have been
Reginald got the kids from the different nations and numbered them according to who was most likely to be the Avatar (the cycle had been largely forgotten by society) and raises them in the Northern Water Tribe.
Luther: Earthbender, supposed next in the cycle
Diego: Firebender, highly dedicated
Allison: Waterbender, extremely skilled healer
Klaus: Airbender, talented but no motivation
Five: Firebender, actually the Avatar but untrained as such and lacks control
Ben: Waterbender, healer but not as naturally talented as Allison
Vanya: Firebender, went directly to bending lightning which freaked out Reginald and he banned her from bending again because she couldnt produce flame
Five starts showing signs of being able to bend other elements but they are all written off as coincidence. When he realizes he might be the Avatar, he talks to Reginald about it but is unable to produce anything except fire at the time and told that he is "a poor excuse for a firebender, and has no potential to be the Avatar".
As time passes he realizes that these continually occuring instances are not coincidence and confronts Reginald about wanting to be trained in all the elements. Reginald refuses, and Five runs away from home. He then enters the Avatar State in a fit of rage and meets his past lives, talking directly with Korra, who tells him he is the next Avatar and it is his responsibility to be trained in all the elements and continue the cycle. He also levels a small village.
He tries to train himself in all the elements for years, being unable to. He eventually is found by a group of rebels who offer to train him in all of the elements in exchange for him doing their bidding. He agrees, and ends up being trained in the most visceral ways how to bend all the elements, and only uses his abilities to kill people, mainly prominent political figures.
After some time of doing this, he decides he wants to leave the group and runs away back to his home, only to find Reginald has died and his siblings are all there for the funeral. They had scattered across the world after Ben's death and returned to their home nations, taking various positions.
(Luther: Police officer in Ba Sing Se
Diego: Vigilante in the Fire Nation
Allison: Healer in the Southern Water Tribe
Klaus: Monk, leader of one of the air temples
Ben: Killed under mysterious circumstances
Vanya: Music teacher in the fire nation)
Five tells everyone he is the Avatar and tells them that a catastrophic event is prophesied to occur. None of his siblings believe any of it except Vanya. Five ends up leaving to try and find the source of the catastrophe, while the siblings attempt to forget the events of the day but also get roped up into Five's investigation once the rebel group comes after Five and them.
Eventually, Vanya re-realizes her firebending ability and starts using it to go on a rampage over the fact that she was beaten down her whole life, causing her siblings, led by Five, to have to stop her from destroying the world by storm-bending so much all life on the planet is eliminated.

chap 5 is lolz. the fact that Ben and Vanya are the quiet masterminds behind some of the pranks is perfect, and Klaus being the only to put the pieces together is great too! can i say that i love how you don't dumb his character down either in your story? He's a bit different then canon, sure, but i think your au makes those changes believable. Got any other prank stories that didn't make it into the chapter? Also "toothpaste creme puffs" ?????? context please!!111
Yay! I'm glad you liked it! It was by far my favorite chapter to date. Possibly my favorite piece to write period.
As we see in the show, all of the siblings are a-holes, which includes Ben despite him not being as prominent on the screen as the rest of them. But we see enough of Ben’s personality, and we can see the way he can be soft but extremely cruel in the show (just like all of them). He’s got his own traumas as well as dying too young to boot. i can understand why they all are the way they are. Plus they wouldn’t be the Hargreeves without these dysfunctional faults.
With this in mind, I've always head canoned that he was the quiet but deadly one in the family. The one no one ever suspected to pull off the pranks. Sure Klaus helped and Klaus did his own pranks (hence the toothpaste creme puff fiasco) but mostly it was Ben (with an equally quiet and unsuspecting Vanya adding her own chaos into the mix on occasion).
Also, you have no idea how happy you have just made me by sending me this. After seeing some of the fanon posts circling around (which I agree with to a point, since people can write whatever they want since there is always gonna be a crowd that will read it), I've been second guessing myself. I know I'm not innocent, that i’m probably guilty of it to some degree, especially when you toe the line of AUs and throwing characters into totally different situations than what they actually went through in canon. It's a fine line that can go either way and I wanted to show the character growth due to these changes but still trying to keep to the characters that we know and love. The fact that there are people who think Klaus is stupid, baffles me. I guess it's the drug addict stigma that makes people believe that, but I know Klaus is not stupid.
In my mind, he's flippant, he's unpredictable, he can be as soft and as cruel as Ben can be--as all of them are capable of being. Klaus deflects and hides behind a sharp tongue, he uses humor, and if he “acts stupid” then there’s a 90% chance that he’s doing just that; he’s acting and deflecting to prevent people from digging deeper into the actual problem. He’s survived on the streets by himself. Sure Ben is there, but what can Ben really do to help? Nothing. He’s a witness that can’t help when Klaus gets himself into a scuffle or any other kind of trouble. He can offer advice, but other then that, he’s useless. Klaus is witty and thinks pretty quickly on his feet (the meritech facility is proof of that fact), he’s also pretty observant when he puts his mind to it (or when he’s not fogged up by drugs and even then he’s observant to a degree). He’s a complex character, and i love him dearly. I love all of them, i’m even starting to like Luther more now that i’ve been writing him and trying to put myself in his shoes (i’ve never hated him, but in the beginning he wasn’t my favorite. Now i don’t mind him haha).
So, yeah, in my AU they are different then they are in canon. But i can tell you that it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows with the four of them. I show hints to it, that old habits die hard and tensions rise in the apartment, but for the most part the four of them are different. Klaus gets clean 6 years earlier then canon. Klaus has not only Ben, but Five nagging him also. And Five also knows where to hit where it hurts, he even hits the points where Ben, as cruel as he can be, wouldn’t even touch. In the 6 years that follows, the Four of them (once Vanya joins their ghostly group) go through their own character growth and with tensions not as high (other than the pressure of trying to stop the apocalypse) they actually learn to co-exist and get along like a family should. They aren’t perfect; they fight, they insult each other, they basically act like siblings (cause honestly, that’s how we are in my family, so i can relate), but i don’t show all of these points (just hint at it... i feel i’ve put enough angst into the piece that i didn’t really want to add more, ya know).
I thank you Anon, for making me feel better though, to tell me that i’m actually doing a good enough job that these characters are still enjoyable for you to read, haha. I’m not perfect. I will make mistakes, but to know i’m doing something right is a sigh of relief XD.  Sorry for the rambling haha, but i’m trying to get through all the points of this ask without skipping over anything. As far as pranks, i’ve got plenty!! Ben tried to replace the toothpaste with Polygrip once without telling anyone (not even Klaus). I head canon that Ben or Five are usually the ones who always make it into the bathroom first--something that pisses Allison and everyone else off--so Ben had the plan to brush his teeth and than replace the tube. It backfired only because Klaus was observant enough to know something was up and replaced the toothpaste with the polygrip he found in Ben’s possession first.
Allison was the one to start a prank war that lasted for two weeks before Reginald finally caught wind of it and put a stop to it all. it involved a lot of petty things, like things going missing or getting moved. tripping each other in the halls, doing the hand in a bowl of water prank, and the shaving cream or toothpaste on your fingers prank. It’s the last prank that caused the war to be ended. Diego had rubbed the toothpaste in his eyes and that had been the end of that.
the super glue incident that Vanya did, was super gluing everyone’s knick-knacks/pens/notebooks to the surfaces they were on. Also not mentioned she replaced the mouthwash with straight up vinegar.  Diego and Klaus are the only one’s who fell for it, both too tired to realize the smell was coming from the bottle before it was too late.  LMAO the creme puff incident XD there really isn’t any context i can add that i haven’t already written. I head canon that the kids weren’t really given sweets save for the cookies that Grace made them. so when he saw the creme puffs he figured they were for Reginald and Reginald only. This is around the time when Klaus really started to rebel (maybe a few months before Five disappeared), and i figured Klaus was trying to get back at the man for locking him up--so he replaces the creme with mint toothpaste XD How was he supposed to know that EVERYONE was going to be eating them. That was the best acting performance Klaus ever had to pull because up until he revealed he was the one to do it in that chapter, NO ONE knew who had done it for years afterward (they all got in trouble for it, even Luther).  Thank you for the ask!! I’m truly glad you liked the chapter, and i’m glad you’re liking the story so far!! Hope my rambling wasn’t too bad XD.

At the interviews, they all ply their own ways into rebelling against the Games.
Ben goes up there and smiles, just like the rest of them, and talks about how much he has come to enjoy his time in the Capitol, how they have become like a family to him. (The same Capitol that broke Klaus, that drained Allison, that killed Luther's cats, that turned Vanya and Five's genius into murder, that sends Diego home crying every years, that forced Ben to kill his best friend.)
They sit there in those interview seats and make the Capitol sweat, make the citizens, simpering and false and too obsessed with their precious Victors, beg for the Quell to stop. The Capitolites don't want to lose their precious little Five, their whores in Allison and Klaus, their perfect heroes in Luther and Diego, their villain in Ben (who killed the favorite his Games), even the forgotten like Vanya. They don't want to lose their characters, their celebrities, their playthings.
(The days leading up to the beginning of the Third Quarter Quell.)

Part One / Part Two / Part Three

The palace gardens glowed with the light of thousands of fire lanterns, making the grounds seem almost unearthly. You stood on the stairs leading down from the palace into the gardens, and its appearance, while breathtaking, made you uneasy.
There was a party going on; that much was obvious to you. Well-dressed attendees conversed in small groups throughout the gardens that you could see, and a string quartet was playing music that struck you as both beautiful and sad.
As your eyes scanned through the partygoers, you were alarmed when you couldn’t find any of your family members. Because of your tendency to soak longer than necessary in the fragrant bath your ladies would prepare for you prior to formal gatherings, you were always the last member to arrive at any type of party that your family hosted.
The first thing you would do when you finally entered would be to find your older sister, Vanya. Her presence was calming, and the two of you would always stick together through events. She would usually be the first family member to arrive, which made her absence was the most disturbing of all.
“Your Highness?”
A soft, low voice broke through your racing thoughts as you searched for your family. You turned your attention to the man that was now standing a few steps beneath you. His dark hair was pulled back into a neat knot, allowing you a clear view of his weathered face. Even if the scars and hardened set of his jaw hadn’t tipped you off, his gaze seemed to carry weight, like there was a heavy burden behind his eyes. They reminded you of a storm brewing over the sea.
He held his arm to you, and you followed your compulsion to place a hand on his elbow and follow him down into the gathering. As the man led you through the clusters of people, your eyes continued scanning for your family’s faces.
“They’re dead, Your Highness.”
It felt like your heart stopped at his words, which were barely a murmur, meant only for your ears. He hadn’t even looked down at you when he said it. To onlookers, the comment went undetected. You wished you could unhear the words. Your family couldn’t be dead.
The man had brought you to a small clearing near the string quartet. Those who had been dancing drifted to the edges of the space as the man pulled you to him, pulling and holding you to him with a strong hand pressed to your lower back. Despite your inability to place his face, there was a sense of security that ignited at his firm touch.
As you began to sway to the music, he ducked his head so his lips hovered near your ear. Something else seemed to ignite inside of you, and you closed your eyes as he began speaking.
“Your family was murdered by a rebel group called the Vesna. Do you understand?”
You nodded in a minute movement. He continued.
“They want to kill you to snuff out your claim to the crown. Do you understand?”
You tilted your head, resisting the urge to sneak a glance at him.
“They are coming for you. You need to be ready to fight for what is yours. Do you understand?”
Your eyes flickered to the fringes of the dance area. The finery that the partygoers had been wearing was gone, replaced with worn clothing layered with holstered weapons. Their predatory gazes, which should have driven fear into your heart, instead caused a sense of calm resolve to settle and harden in your chest.
As they began to close in, your partner quickly swiveled you around so you were standing with your back against his. You shifted your stance lower, preparing for battle.
You awoke with a start to the sound of someone saying your name and placing a gentle hand on your shoulder. Adrenaline was coursing through your system thanks to your dream, and you woke up ready to fight, swinging an arm out at whoever was touching you.
“Whoa, whoa,” James held his hands up to show he meant no harm. “You’re okay. It’s me.”
You let out a breath that you hadn’t even realized you were holding and slowly sat up.
“I’m sorry to wake you, but I’m going to have to leave you here today while I go retrieve the supplies,” he explained as you realized he had all of his thick layers of clothing back on, including an additional overcoat that he must have kept in the cabin.
“How long will you be gone?” you asked.
You had to suppress the urge to beg him to either stay or let you tag along; you knew that if he stayed, you’d both starve, and if you went with him, you would just be a burden that slowed him down. It was smarter and safer for him to go alone.
“Best case scenario, in a few hours. No matter what happens, I should be back by sundown.” He was sheathing several knives in compartments of his overcoat that you hadn’t even noticed as he spoke. Sliding the last one into place, he paused. “If I’m not back by sundown, I left a map on the table that shows you how to get to people who will protect you.” He must have noticed the look of panic that crossed your features. “I will be back. This map is just some insurance. The woods are a dangerous place, but I know them better than most.”
You felt yourself nod as he crossed the room and placed a gloved hand on your shoulder. A tidal wave of words crashed onto your tongue but died on your lips. He gave you a tight smile that you assumed was meant to reassure you before he bid you farewell and left the cabin. It didn’t.

Going through ur master list of AUs and celebi incident? For gym leader AU? Please tell me more
okay i definitely tried to asnwer this the day it was asked and then my response was lost in a tragic incident and i lost all motivation but TAKE TWO
so what happened was this: the Umbrella Academy lived pretty isolated in the pokemon au. Like think big spooky manor on the edge of a smallish town, not far away from some really deep and fairly spooky woods populated by all sorts of pokemon.
Anyway, when the kids were 10 they obviously were like “fucking finally, we can leave and go on our pokemon journey and escape” or at least were prepared to Go Forth and Make Father Proud or whatever. Except Reggie was like “yeah, no y’all aren’t leaving just yet”
To which Five, of course, rebelled pretty spectacularly and threatened to run away
“You’ll come crawling back within a day.” Reginald dismisses, because Five doesn’t have a pokemon and you pretty much have to travel through woods crawling with pokemon and trainers in order to get out of town.
Five says “oh? bet” and runs away anyway, deep into the woods
Does Five run into pokemon? Yeah, of course he does. However, he can also teleport and is a feral child who is ABSOLUTELY willing to wrestle a zigzagoon with his bare hands
and Five camps out in the woods with 0 supplies and 0 preparation and look, pokemon are pretty intelligent, right? They can usually tell the difference between a Child and an Adult of a species. Five is also intelligent, and so he absolutely follows the poochyena to the berry bushes which are edible, and gets himself a good meal out of it.
Five is stubborn, and determined, and furious, and he’s going to live in the fucking woods if that’s what it takes because to go back is to admit defeat and that is not an option
So he does live in the woods. The pokemon adapt to him being around. He bunks down with bidoof or sleeps in the trees in nests of taillow and has an ongoing rivalry with the family or purrloin over who can find the best berry bushes
and then he meets celebi
Five is smart, but he’s young and he hasn’t exactly been deep diving into myths and legends in what little spare time he has. He doesn’t know about the mythos surrounding celebi, all he knows is this weird little onion fairy is friendly and lives to play tag - so they do. Five teleports around the woods and hides and jumps out and laughs when he manages to tag the little creature
and one day Five and Celebi are playing, and they get ‘home’ and find... nothing. The family of purrloin are gone, the pikipek who plucked twigs out of Five’s hair in the evening has vanished, the pidgey nest is in pieces
and then they hear voices, and Celebi looks at Five and grabs his hand right before they could be discovered and -
They’re in the woods again. Well, they is a strong word. Five opens his eyes, and Celebi is gone. It’s just the woods. Curious and wary faces poke out of the trees and the bushes, but none that he recognizes. A family of ratata are in the hollow that serve as the purrloin’s home. The trees aren’t arranged right. The paths aren’t the same. The woods look different and Five... panicks just a little bit okay
So he runs through the woods and everything looks familiar and also different, he can spot the craggy rocks where the pidove like the make their nests, but the berry bushes aren’t where they should be. The canyon is only half as deep as it should be, and the graveyard of bikes stolen from various trainers is absent
Five does the only thing he thinks he can do: he goes home
Which would be much more significant if there was a home to go to. Five gets to where he’s absolutely sure his village should be, where the manor should be, where his siblings live, and just. Keep finding more woods. He figured he must have taken a wrong turn at the caves, but when he backtracks it’s where it’s supposed to be. He’s in the right location, but the wrong... time
Celebi did this, he is sure of it, and so that’s who he has to find
Except Celebi is nowhere to be found, and Five looks. He trecks through the forest for miles every day, plucking berries from bushes with nimble fingers and curling up in nests of moss at night. The pokemon of this time aren’t especially wary of him and indeed often come chittering up to sniff him and ask him to play. Five wonders if they’ve ever even seen a human before.
(Honestly it seems half the pokemon have decided he’s a weird variation of abra or ralts? demonstrating his teleportation makes one concerned ursaring scoop him up and leave him at the feet of a gardevoir with grunts of diapproval but Five is a strong independent young human who doesn’t need pokemon parents)
Years pass, and Five learns the ebb and flow of the woods even more in depth than he did before. He makes friends, the various pokemon running around and helping him look for Celebi but who also tempt him into playing with them and helping them and just living
(sometimes, Five wonders why he’s even trying to get back. he wonders why when he’s curled up and soft and safe, when he knows in the morning that he’s going to go to the river to play. then he remembers his siblings, who are still stuck with Reggie as far as he knows)
He grows up in the woods with pokemon as parents and siblings, grows taller and older and is very good at mimicry. He hoots softly to the pidgey and barks with the growlithe and dances with the hoppip, learning a million different languages as he runs recklessly between the trees racing electrike to the lake with laughter on his lips
and then he finds Celebi again, on an unremarkable day when he’s challenged quilava to a game of hide and seek tag
and Celebi extends their hands to him
“I haven’t said goodbye.” Five protests, but Celebi extends they hands again and Five knows that if he leaves now he might not ever find the little creature again
(He thinks of his siblings and takes a deep breath and reaches out and -)
He’s back in the woods again. Alone again.
(He looks down at his hands, and startles, because they aren’t his hands. They’re too young, caked in dirt but without the calluses he’s gained over the years.)
He runs, he runs back to his village and almost bowls over a drainer on his desparate sprint. Even the sight of a person is so strange that it almost halts Five in his tracks, but instead he sprint until he’s standing in front of a sight he hasn’t seen in years
He’s at the manor. But it’s different still. The lawn is in minor disrepair, which isn’t that much but it’s still wildly different from Reginald’s exacting standards of perfection. Maybe the old man let things go looking for Five? Did Five’s absence affect things so much?
He hears arguing, and without even thinking about it he jumps and suddenly he’s in front of - a bunch of strangers?
“Five?” One of them says with a voice that wobbles, and Five immediately backs up.
“Who are you?” Five asks, but he’s pretty sure he already knows. There are six people here, after all, all who look hauntingly like the siblings he left behind if they’d been allowed to grow up in his memory.
“Five, Five it’s us. What happened to you?”
“No.” Five denies, “No. I’m back. This isn’t right. This is wrong.”
That’s how the siblings end up having to deal with a physically eleven year old Five crashing Reginald’s funeral or whatever looking like he’s been living in the woods for months or maybe years? Five tells them he’s older than 11, that he lived in the woods for years but doesn’t know what Celebi did to him. At first he wants to go hunt Celebi down again and demand he be taken back to where he should be, but Vanya stops him stating that they lost him years ago and they need him to stay now
So they get the fun honor of having to raise a half-feral pre-teen who hasn’t really had human contact since he was 10 and who seems more comfortable with pokemon than he does with people. Most of the fam are well on their way to setting up gyms/already being gym leaders/working their way up and so Five ends up as the dragon gym leader when he’s physically 13-years-old
His siblings are all like “haha yeah we’re all the same age I think? unclear” and when people point at five they’re just like “haha yeah celebi time travel bullshit is the worst amiright” and no one has the balls to challenge them on it
(Five didn’t become a gym leader at physically 11 because he had to be taught to reintegrate into society. He still naps in piles with his pokemon and has to be bribed into using a bed/sleeping indoors but he actually speaks to trainers instead of dropping from the ceiling and ambushing them for gym battles so improvement)

So i had a bad god au dream about little ludwig last night and holy shit it was neat and also kinda sad
i thought you guys might like to hear about it (I’ll post a bit here and the rest under cut so if it sounds interesting u can keep reading)
Bascially it was like, for whatever reason, little luddie was formed naturally as a kid, he wasnt brought back by nevo (maybe he was killed off/eaten somehow and was able to be brought back so he regenrated naturally since nevo still didnt have as much hold on the land)
so a family found him and took him in as their adoptive son cuz who the fuck lets smol kid in the woods with monster be out there. luddie was p happy, tho he was still an only child of the pair and the parents were busy working (i never really saw the mom so maybe it was a single dad? idk) so yea he had a home but it wasnt exactly the most ideal place
one day the dad decided to take lil luddie to work with him so he wasnt always at the house alone for hours on end, course it still wasnt fun cuz luddie just kinda sat there while the dad did stuff
tho at some point luddie noticed there was some weird people around the place, something about them seemed off and he wasnt sure why. he tried to tell his dad but the dad was busy so he went to go investigate himself to see what the heck was going on. the people noticed him but just kinda dispearsed after whispering to each other and luddies just mmmm thats kinda hmmmm suspicious but maybe its nothing??
yea it wasnt nothing
they were a group of rebels, and who woulda thunk, later that night they barged into the house, placing the dad under arrest and were going to take luddie away too. though they seemed fairly nice even though they were hella scary to the kiddo
luddie was just 'wh-where am i going??' and one of the rebels, who was an older lady (who because it was a dream was Ana from overwatch) was like 'we're going to take you back to where you belong' '.... can... can i bring a friend?'
and luddie runs to his room, chooses one of his stuffed animals and goes back over to them with a certain fox toy being 'okay im ready..'
course this wasnt the first place for it, turns out they headed into the compound and hes just ??? what the heckies happening??? turns out the rebels were trying to also free all the lambs cuz they got basic knowledge what was happening and its like, the poor kids are being brainwashed by the god dictator thing!
so they tried to break the ambs out quietly and luddies like ??? who the heckie are these weird kids and some of the other lambs are ?!?!?? youre alive????
course them rebels are discovered sooner or later and BATTLE BREAKS OUT
poor luddie got scared and tried to run for safety, he ended up getting caught in the crossfire
one of the rebels (who, because dreams are weird was reinheart but eh, go grandpa go) took notice and went over to shield him, poor kiddo got caught in an eletric blast so he got all paralyzed for the moment but he tried his hardest not to let go of his little fox toy
in the end tho, the rebels were driven out and luddie was reclaimed from them. needless to say he was hella scared outta his wits by that point cuz everything was scary and confusing and he didnt feel good
though nevo on the one hand is just ???!? he reformed naturally without my help??? how the heck??
and vanya was just 'you can research that later, he needs rest' so vanya tried to find luddie his own small room to be able to sleep in since the shared nursery might have been too much
along the way though, luddie lost his fox toy, and because he wasnt fully healed from the paralyzing he couldnt try to go get it and this new old guy scared him so he didnt ask for it. so he was put to bed and he just kinda cried a bit
sooner or later though he felt something press up against him, turning over he saw it was his fox toy and he was just ????? how
then he noticed a dimly lit pair of glasses at the end of the bed
later on luddie felt better after the sleep and just tried to stick around with the kid who had the glasses on and made sure to keep his fox toy close. though as they went to sunday breakfast, he noticed some of the servers were the rebels from the other day. he decided to keep his mouth shut though, seeing the old man and lady (reinhart n ana cuz why not) in the group and since they were nice to him, it was probably better to not rat them out
then i woke up
needless to say it was one hell of a dream. i wish i could go into more details about the visuals but hnngh i know i couldnt be able to explain it if i tried
so i hope you guys liked it!

TUA MEAN GIRLS AU
(please understand that by AU, I mean they share an incredibly small amount of things in common with the original source material which I barely remember BUT the “story” takes place in the setting of the film) (not to be misleading or anything :p)
(BEWARE: abuse, bribery, immoral deals, bullying, homophobia, outing, transphobia, violence, abortion, teen pregnancy, etc.)
(If you can handle watching Umbrella Academy, this will be fine for you.)
(Regina) Five is the king of this school, and he has no plans to give up that position. He needs it to protect his people, as few and far between as they are, and himself, if he’s honest - he’s a trans and ace-aro kid in platonic love with the health class mannequin who he calls Dolores. Ruling with fear is basically all he can do. While he’s mean, you’ll soon realize that everything he says is more of a blunt observation that will improve your life if you just heed his advice. He doesn’t respect almost anybody - not the jocks, theatre geeks, nerds, cheerleaders, band kids - no one. However, if he does respect you, you have his trust and protection. And as a thirteen-year-old genius who only takes advice from always-slightly-drunk art teacher Agnes, his protection is pretty damn valuable: the last person who tried to hurt one of his people will never walk again. Leonard Peabody - he assaulted Vanya, and he paid. Five beat him to the point of hospitalization without getting a single speck of blood or bruise on himself, and Leonard’s the one who walked away in handcuffs. Do not fuck with any of Five’s people, or you have to fuck with Five. And you do not want to fuck with Five.
(Gretchen) Vanya is quiet and subdued, to the point where people question how she’s a part of the school’s most popular trio. If you talk to her for long enough though, it becomes clear: she knows any and everybody’s secrets. She writes for the school paper, and is known to write the stories her subjects don’t want anyone else to find out about. Like Diego, who she outed as bisexual last year to throw people off the trail of her own secret relationship with Sissy, earning her an ex-girlfriend and an ex-friend. She’s been trying to win Diego’s forgiveness ever since, but he won’t talk to her, returning every single one of her letters and gifts. (He’s blocked her number and all of her socials, which she only created to talk to him anyway.) She doesn’t know why Five keeps her around - Klaus loves to gossip, but Five never seems to want any of her secrets. She’s pleasantly surprised to find out that he apparently actually enjoys her company. (What?)
(Karen) Klaus is a fucking mess. He plays the dumb blonde (well, brunette) despite being a genius in his own right, even if he’s not at Five’s level. (To be fair, he’s pretty sure no one is.) He’s a drag queen on the weekends, a hangover from his time in the mafia gang, which he joined with his boyfriend Dave for six months after running away from home. Dave died in a gunfight, and Klaus has been fucked up (well, more than usual) ever since. Anorexia, PTSD, anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, the works. But as lonely as he is, addicted to a fuckton of hard drugs and liquors to cope, he’s still an alluring, aloof, and bubbly popular girl, wearing pink skirts and glittery heels and leather corset crop tops to school every day. No matter how much his father Reginald beats him for it, he keeps being himself, because he’s brave and because even if Reginald hates him, someone far more important loves him… Diego. Diego, who Klaus has kissed under a million stars and in the lollipop shop down the road and on top of a cafeteria table. Diego, who Klaus has chased through the rain and into the street without rest or hesitation. Diego, whose words and promises and scribbles are immortalized on Klaus’ skin for all to see. Diego, who Klaus will love no matter how much bigotry they encounter or dickwads they’re beat up by or miles they put between them. Diego, Klaus’ ex-boyfriend.
(Cady) Allison is the new girl, and she has plans for the advantage being underestimated has brought her. She challenges Five on her first day there, earning his respect, and joins his group at the urgings of Klaus and Vanya, who like her company. A fashion queen, she acts as though she’s unfazed by any and everything, but nobody knows her true heartbreak - she still writes letters to a girl back home. Allison was expelled from her Christian private school for falling in love with a girl named Natalie, who she kissed in janitors’ closets and who she beat up racist and homophobic blondes for. She has no tolerance for bullies, and yet becomes one under Five’s guidance - until she upends his reign as queen bee and signs her death warrant. (Though she later finds out he was more angry at her for stealing Klaus and Vanya’s affection than his popularity.) Now her only hope for happiness in her final days is Ray, the Shakespeare-quoting nerd in her English class… or Luther, the quiet dork in the Star Trek t-shirts in her math class. Fuck, she misses Natalie.
(Aaron) Luther is the posterboard for toxic masculinity. He’s on the football team but hates it, preferring his math tutoring and fantasy books to tackling drills. His bisexuality is his deepest secret - he once slept with Diego when they were drunk at a party after a football game, and he can’t get it out of his head. He keeps thinking about what might happen if somebody found out - would he be shunned like Diego? Trapped like Vanya? Plastic like Klaus? He doesn’t know. All he can do is continue to be kind and hope Allison loves him enough to love every part of him, beyond his good lucks and British accent and fucking Ray. So Luther stands up to Five, and pays the price. He compliments Klaus on his skirts, and pays the price. (Diego seems to simultaneously love and hate him for it, it’s confusing.) He holds the door open for Ben, and pays the price. He’s big enough to be scary, kind enough to be overlooked - but after that incident with Vanya, everyone looks at him like he’s a monster to be locked up. And soon enough, “star student” Luther, “teacher’s pet” Luther, “completely under the principal’s thumb and completely friendless and completely terrified of the world around him” Luther might just break under all that pressure.
(Janis) Diego is the school’s resident outcast and rebel punk - he wears skirts and fishnets and whatever the fuck he wants because if Klaus taught him anything when they were dating it was that gender is a construct and he looks hot in leather. They broke up when Diego was outed and Klaus chose to stay quiet when people started shunning Diego for it, but despite it all, Diego still loves him. He misses when they used to paint their nails together, because he has to paint his own now. They used to stare up at the stars together and fall asleep in the grass, curled up in each other, on the nights that Klaus would run away in terror from his dad and Diego would breathe with him and let him press his hand against his heart until Klaus’ panic died down. His heart still flutters when he sees Klaus smile around a lollipop… but he won’t take him back. He won’t. He just can’t forgive him. So instead, he talks to his mom about everything. He plays soccer with his sister Eudora. He paints shit while smoking weed with his best friend Lila. He thinks of Luther being scared of him and laughs. You know, he was almost in Allison’s position freshman year - Five loved him, and so did Klaus and Vanya, but then Vanya outed him to the whole school for no reason like a day before he and Klaus were going to come out together. And now they’re all estranged, and Diego has the strangest feeling that he’s lost his family, even though his mom is the only real family he’s ever known. But maybe he’s wrong. Because Klaus keeps sending him “anonymous” letters, leaving them on the porch and spilling secrets Diego never even would’ve imagined him having. But forgiveness is still a question - that is, until one day Diego gets a letter in a different handwriting: Five’s, telling him to man the fuck up and love Klaus before he kills himself trying to tear the stars down for Diego’s own personal pleasure, and suddenly, Diego is crying on his porch in the rain, missing a slender, sassy skeleton in his arms and a pink, bruised but unbroken heart in his chest.
(Damien) Ben is everyone’s favorite, and the kindest person in the world. He used to be Klaus’ best friend, but that ended when Ben got into an accident (there was a bus involved, that’s all you need to know) that landed him in a wheelchair and Klaus couldn’t deal with the mental pain it caused him. They still stare at each other longingly from across the cafeteria, but never say a word to each other, not even in class. But beyond Klaus, Ben has never had any friends, though he has a million aquaintances: he’s the only student in the school that everyone loves and respects. Five holds the door for him, though Ben can tell without having to ask that Five would rather nobody know that. He hangs out with Diego because he knows Diego’s lonely, even if he never wants to admit it. He advises Allison not to let anyone control her, telling her he knows Natalie from summer camp and that the deaf girl still loves her and reads every single one of her letters. He gives Vanya his lunch when she skips to cry in the gym after Diego yells at her, even though a part of him might think she deserves it sometimes. He plays sports with Luther after school and offers him an ear and some jokes about his problems, and a few touchdowns when he’s feeling good. He acts as Ray’s student consultant, because he knows how hard Ray works to treat him like an equal. He tutors Eudora in basically everything, but cuts study sessions short to play video games when he can tell she’s too stressed to think. He’s ace and pan and proud about it; he runs the school’s GSA; he defends Diego and uses the right pronouns for Lila when they’re alone without Lila ever having to him he’s trans. He bugs Reginald’s office in one of their many meetings and records enough conversations to get him fired when he tries to expel Five. And finally, karma rewards him - Klaus shows up at his house with a box of brownies he baked himself, all covered in smiley faces, and shoves them into Ben’s hands, shaking his head when Ben assumes they’re for Diego. I miss you, Klaus tells him, and Ben tugs him down into a kiss, pulling away with a stammered apology. I’m sorry, he blushes, and Klaus beams, leaping into his lap and hugging him closer than ever, the two of them queerplatonic partners from then on, forever linked by their fingers in the hallway. Happy. Finally.
Lila is the shy artsy kid who carries around one of those leather brown satchels that looks threatening but is really just code for “I think I’m too cool for a backpack so I stuff all my incorrect homework and favorite comic books into this sack of knockoff pig skin instead”. He’s covered in paint most of the time, and wears Alice in Wonderland combat boots and Sharpie-doodle-covered jeans and big black hoodies and soft grey beanies; he’s trans and hacked off his own hair until an undercut with choppy slash bangs and there’s pink streaks in them, of course, to match the bubblegum he’s always chewing. His nails are bitten and black, and his skin is decorated with tattoos that are almost exclusively Bo Burnham quotes, with the exception of Diego’s name right over his heart. (Diego has Lila’s name over his too - and Klaus’ and Eudora’s, though he’d never tell them that.) He gives his skirts to Klaus and gets along well enough with Five, them both being trans and all, and everyone else knows him as that kid who’ll spread rumors and steal things for bribes. It’s not like he can get in more trouble than he’s already in - he lives with his bigoted and abusive bitch of a mom. But Diego is his best friend - the one he shoots and stabs things with, the one whose ex-boyfriend he talks to because Diego will never admit to himself that he misses Klaus like he would his own lungs if they were torn from his chest, the one whose sister he’s in love with. Wait. Fuck. Oops.
Eudora is Diego’s sister, and the captain of the soccer team. She wears her red jersey with the white numbers to school every day, and is covered in tattoos of magical creatures, because she believes in all of them. She wishes she was a werewolf, and has dressed up as one every year for Halloween since she was ten. (And she’s let anyone dressed a werewolf give her a hickey just in case that turned her. It’s good to have all your bases covered.) She has a broken down pick-up truck named Travis-Trevor-Thomas-literally-any-other-T-name that she loves beyond belief, and drives Diego to and from school in it, though he grumbles about it every day. She eats lunch with him even though he insists he’s fine eating alone and wants her to go away, because she knows he’s lying, and she hangs around the GSA with him sometimes too. She’s lab partners with her brother’s “secret” ex-boyfriend, and is concerned by how quiet he is - she’s seen enough documetaries to know that quiet never means anything good. But unfortunately, she has her own academic drama to deal with - Hazel and Cha-Cha hate her for helping Klaus, and she hates them right back, leading to failing grades in both English and history no matter how brilliant her work is. Mostly, though, Eudora tries to get to know Lila - the pretty, angry, sarcastic emo boy she shares half her classes with, and flirts with every day despite how he ignores her. (ONLY because Lila still smiles and laughs every time she flirts with him, and Eudora knows from Diego that Lila thinks Eudora only flirts with him because it’s some sort of game of “if you get the guy who’s hard to get you win the hundred dollar bet” deal. Otherwise she would’ve backed off immediately because not doing so would be harassment.) Eventually, though, Eudora runs off-field in the middle of a soccer game and over to the stands to ask Lila to prom. Finally, she gets a yes - and, most importantly, a real smile, curled against her own mouth like a Cupid’s bow of promise.
Sissy is Vanya’s ex-girlfriend, and Fuckwad Carl’s current girlfriend. She hooked up with him after breaking up with Vanya, too drunk to even speak, and now her belly’s ballooning and her parents are gonna kick her out unless she marries him like a good Christian woman. And she really didn’t expect herself to tell them to fuck off for this one, but apparently lesbianism makes you do crazy things - so here she is, standing on Ray’s porch in the pouring rain and hoping for the best. She’s depressed and shows that by reading the Bronte sisters; Klaus opens the door for her and brings her notes with doodles all over them which makes her cry; she misses Vanya but hates her for what she did to Diego. And yet Vanya’s there when she goes to the abortion clinic, smiling and joking and holding her hand like always. One day she’ll have a baby and she and Vanya will raise it right, but fuck - that baby sure as hell won’t be Carl’s. (Because fuck that guy.)
Ray is a humanitarian, so, naturally, he’s also the student council president. Five has never mistreated him, because everyone loves and respects Ray, even his critics. He nurtures Allison’s intelligence and encourages Vanya’s musical habits. He tutors Klaus in basically every subject but never talks down to him because he knows the kid’s a genius, just a bit spacey from all the drugs (and the ADHD, let’s be honest). He helps bring Luther out of his shell and takes Lila out shopping for boy clothes, all of which he pays for himself. He’s not scared or offended by Diego’s sarcasm or intensity, instead greeting him every day in class with a new dad joke. He treats Ben to intelligent conversation like an equal and doesn’t let Five be so harsh he’ll regret it later, though he still lets him say what he means and be himself. Everybody knows he’ll be the real President one day - even if for now he wears pajamas to school every day because, in his words, “Clothes are just too much fuckin’ work, man.” (There’s a possibility he may have still been high from hanging out with Klaus that day.)
The Handler is the evil physics teacher. (I don’t know why I said evil clearly all science teachers are evil.) (Yes this is coming from a place of aggression but hey at least I recognize that.) (Plus he deserves it. So fuck you.) (*sticks tongue out*) (Don’t you see how mature I am?) (I’m sorry I’m sorry back to your regularly scheduled programming -) She’s Lila’s mom, and continually and constantly misgenders him (and Five!) in class, not even because she hates trans people, just because she hates him (and Five!). Five always challenges her dictatorial rule, refusing to participate in solidarity with Klaus when she forces Klaus to sit out for wearing skirts. She keeps trying to flunk Ray too, the little bitch, but he just keeps doing so well that she can’t even come up with a falsely plausible reason to fail him! She’s been bribing Hazel and Cha-Cha to flunk certain students for years, unaware that Lila has been stealing from the Handler’s own purse to double those prices for those students to ace their classes. Everybody hates her, and for good reason. I hope she gets fired. (Shut up and let me project onto fictional characters, assholes.)
Reginald is the evil principal and Klaus’ abusive dad. He sends Klaus to school every day in a boys’ “uniform”, which Klaus has to change out of in the bathroom every day with borrowed clothes from Allison. (Anything he owns lives at her house; they have an agreement.) Once Klaus forgot to wash off his nail polish before Reginald came home and he broke all of Klaus’ fingers one by one. (Agnes wants to beat him into dust with a rolling pin.) Klaus stays at Diego’s house a lot, though Klaus refuses to come after they break up even though Diego makes it clear that his door will always be open. Five, therefore, is super protective of Klaus - every time he comes over, he’s super respectful when Klaus is in the room and then verbally rips Reginald to shreds as soon as he’s gone. He once stayed over for an impromptu sleepover when he noticed that Klaus was terrified-ly coming up with more and more ridiculous excuses for Five to stay and not leave him alone with Reginald, and as soon as Klaus was asleep, tiptoed around the house to set up bugs and cameras he got from Ben. He gives all of the evidence to Eudora to deliver to the police, who arrest Reginald and leave him to rot in a cement cell for the rest of his sorry fucking life while Klaus goes on to live Happily Ever After because fuck you and your stupid as shit traditionalism and inhumane experiments you lying scheming fuckwad of a psychopathic monster toad.
Hazel is the exhausted English teacher. His secret? He hates every book he teaches. Also he’s been taking bribes from the Handler and Lila because teachers don’t get paid enough in our society. Also his wife Agnes of twenty years divorced him a year ago for the whole bribery situation and he’s been sleeping in his car and using the school’s facilities to appear fine. Yeah, Hazel’s a mess. ANYWAY - Five is the only one who seems to know what’s going on, and Hazel would like to keep it that way. He knows Klaus is a genius with words but doesn’t know how to tell him that, and he knows Diego’s favorite book is Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen and has agreed to take that secret to his grave. (What, it’s a good book!) His class is the only place Diego and Klaus dare to interact, and he’s noticed - they often pair up for assignments and take to the floor or beanbags in the corner, often cuddling up and giggling over whatever book or assignment they’ve been sent off to read or do. Hazel also has another hopeless couple he teaches, Lila and Eudora - eventually Hazel starts leaving Lila’s sappy poems about Eudora on Eudora’s desk when she comes in for her own class (separate from Lila’s) because there is no other way those two idiots are getting together, let’s be honest. There’s just too much communication. Mostly Hazel misses his own wife, Agnes - but he’s been out of luck since he cashed it in with the science department, hot cocoa whore that he is.
Cha-Cha is the history teacher, and she has all the sass and dry sarcasm required for that job. She will beat a bitch up for telling her she can’t teach critical race theory, and plays Drunk History and Overly Sarcastic Productions in her class basically every day. She doesn’t believe in tests because if she did she’d have to grade them, and she likes animated kids’ movies and TV shows, especially Paw Patrol and Sofia the First. (Yes, obviously she’s single. She’s also ace-aro, so who the fuck cares.) She takes the Handler and Lila’s bribes because she runs an underground wrestling ring and would like to continue feeding her pitbulls gourmet food. The only kid she’s truly on edge with is Five, who often challenges her in debates - she can’t decide if she’s impressed or enraged about it. Whatever. School’s out, bitches.
Agnes is the art teacher who knows everything about everybody. All of her art is of donuts. (Of course.) She’s a damn good cook, especially of pizza - and donuts. (Naturally.) She always has munchkins available for her students - and donuts! (She always saves the chocolate glazed and jelly ones for Five and Klaus.) She likes to rap explicit beats in her car and play her music so loud it shakes the ground and you can hear it from miles away. (Obnoxious.) So she doesn’t restrict her kids’ projects because that’s not what art is about. (And because it would make her a hypocrite, obviously.) Sure, she divorced Hazel, but hey - she’s living her best life, and eventually he’ll come to his senses and come crawling back to her at three a.m. to badly lipsync a Justin Bieber song about missing her, and she’ll leap out the window into his giant hairy arms and kiss him on his ginormous teddy bear face. Because Agnes, at heart, is a hippy. (And that’s love, bitch.)
Grace is Diego and Eudora’s (and everybody’s!) mom. She goes out for drinks with Agnes on the weekends and to clubs with Pogo every Friday (the librarian/unofficial therapist who acts as her mouthpiece when Diego does something stupid and won’t listen to her advice, the moron). She’s kind to everyone, but takes no one’s bullshit: you hurt her kids, you die. Important Notice: Everybody Is Her Kid. So be kind to everyone, dickwads. Well - except Reginald. And the Handler. Both of whom she bitchslaps for mistreating her precious babies. She then takes in Klaus because Diego loves him, and Ben because Klaus loves him, and Lila because both Diego ad Eudora love him. The only reason she didn’t take in Sissy was because Ray already had her taken care of. She’s a literal angel sent from heaven and we should all be worshipping her like the goddess she is I’m sorry I don’t know when this became Grace Appreciation Day™ but hey I’m here for it and I have no regrets.

Now, when I think back on that night, I realize that if things had happened just a little differently, those rebels might have snuck into the grounds and found King Min’s three children snuggled under a blanket and sleeping like babies.
Right before they took us hostage, or maybe just cut our throats.
But it didn’t happen that way. Instead, they got the surprise of their lives.

So in the Instant arrival au, what is the Commission trying to do? Is there mission to kill Five before he disrupts the timeline still or take him because of his powers? Does the Handler ever get involved and do the sibs ever see her be a creep to Five?
(Instant arrival au can be found in these two previous posts: one, two)
The Commission is trying to get him in that au, yes!! Basically they realize that Five has shown up and is uniting the family, and they figure it’s just some kid whatever so they send a hitsquad out - which is the diner scene!
But they underestimated this family of child soldiers and Five’s own combat capabilities (it’s very easy to underestimate someone who hasn’t even gone through puberty yet) and the whole incident did the opposite of what was intended: it actually drove them all closer together and also closer to the realization of the full extent of their childhood trauma
(Especially Luther, who still clings to his father’s memory like a child with a comfort blanket, who is only just now realizing how terribly, tragically young they all were and is starting to have doubts about the wisdom of a child superhero team for the very first time. All the siblings are larger than life, barring Vanya who never was on the team to begin with. The Umbrella Academy are a colorful bunch and it’s difficult to remember how young your siblings were when you were also young yourself, not until slapped in the face with it)
So the Commission is going to continue trying to separate Five from the fold, probably a sort of “wanted: dead or alive” type thing since, hey, time traveling kid could be useful for research if nothing else but it’s more urgent to kickstart the apocalypse than anything else
because right now, in this au, Five is the glue keeping the family together since they’re all somewhat concerned about this Literal Child who has been dropped into their lap and they’re all at least attempting to play nice for his sake
and remove him from the equation and it all crumples. They start blaming each other for losing him, they fight, point fingers, say things that can’t be taken back, and hey if that issue is even the culmination of everything and that sets off Vanya and splits her off from the family even further well hey they need that anyway so
The Handler is an advocate for taking Five in alive, because she’s always been a firm believer in squeezing the use out of every little thing and why, Five is just a delightful little puzzle box of a child with those fun powers and combat ability and even though he’s proven himself to be an... interesting opponent to say the least. But he’s still thirteen. A child. Those tend to be a little more emotional, a little more easily manipulated than your average adult
(of course, Five has never been average in any way. He grew up with Reginald’s manipulations, and there’s something about that Handler that pings the same not safe, tread lightly, danger vibes that have hummed in the back of his head his entire life)
(They all learned to survive at the knee of a man who didn’t care whether they lived or died, and they all went about it different ways. Luther and Vanya learned to ignore the danger signs. Klaus learned to dull it. Diego tried to become dangerous himself. Allison learned how to play the game. And Five? Five learned that there was an option between submit and rebel: subvert)
The Handler probably does show up, in a confusing whirl of over-saturated colors and frozen time to smile with all of her teeth and probably frighten Five tbh by backing him into a corner with no one to back him up
she offers, all saccharine sincerity about how if he comes with her, then his siblings will be saved - and oh, didn’t he know that the Commission was trying to stop the upcoming apocalypse? Why, the world was supposed to end in just a handful of days! And if Five helped them, then he could save not just his family but the world
and so that’s how everyone finds out about the apocalypse in this au, because Five doesn’t trust her as far as he can throw her but he does believe her when she tells him the world is ending.
(He’d believe her more if she wasn’t trying so hard to make him believe that she was a sweet innocent woman who cared about his and the world’s wellbeing. She was used to being the one in charge, and while she might be an excellent liar to most people she wasn’t used to children at all and it showed in the way she made her voice just that side of cloyingly sweet and dumbed down her words. He was thirteen not three for goodness sakes)
and Five is a child who has so far delighted in pushing his powers, with none of the fright and wariness that comes from landing head first into an apocalypse, so it’s more out of curiosity than anything else when Five push-push-pushes at the sliver of time he’s caught in, and the Handler probably wasn’t expecting to be hurled into real time in an instant
to the other Hargreeves it looks like she just appeared out of thin air, and that their brother managed to change positions at the drop of a hat (not unusual) without his regular accompanying blue light (much more unusual)
so YEAH why not in this au the other Hargreeves do get to meet the Handler, but only for a few seconds because she has a suitcase in her hand and she knows when to cut her losses and bail
(we shall see if they end up meeting her again down the line)
honestly Luther’s probably 100% convinced that Reginald had something to do with the Commission after all this (after all Reggie frequently informed the kids about the apocalypse and the Handler said about the apocalypse, which ties them together) and considering the gunmen from the original “oh shit five is in the future” knee jerk reaction??
oh yeah Luther is 100% convinced that the Commission actually murdered Reginald and her, the other siblings figure that makes about as much sense as anything else. Diego is just happy that Grace isn’t being accused anymore tbh and Luther is happy that his theory is being validated and like. if the commission has time travel stuff then surely they can figure out how to make something look like a heart attack, right?
(“Oh well she totally wanted me to go to like. Her secret base with her and stuff. If she comes back I can accept her offer?” Five pipes up, blissfully ignorant of the glares Luther is now getting, “Like, they might have a file or something about Dad’s death or the apocalypse or! Or what they do and stuff!”
“Yeah, no, that’s not happening.” Diego shoots this idea down while staring hard enough at Luther that the big guy doesn’t make any comments either. “No one is going with any creepy ladies to their creepy bases alone and especially not Five and that’s final.”)
Five in this au is more primed than adult Five to recognize what an Absolute Creep the Handler is being because canon!Five in no way views himself as a child and considers himself to be on equal terms with the Handler engaged in a cat and mouse game with her as an opponent vs. instant arrival!Five who is an actual child who at the very least Grace has given stranger danger speeches to (because Reggie can’t have his superpowered investments go wandering off or getting kidnapped for goodness sakes)
actually hmm. i wonder if anyone did try and nab a superpowered kid after they went public with the umbrella academy?? I mean Reginald bought a whole bunch of them so, as terrible as it is, presumably there would be some kind of gross awful underground market interested let alone actual governments/scientists/etc.
how many kidnapping attempts did the umbrella academy have to deal with??
i never thought about that before huh
