Scared Silly
Warnings: cursing, bad scary writing, haunted houses, let me know if I missed any :)
Pairings: Hargreeves siblings x sister reader
*not my gif*
Summary: You and your siblings decide to try something different for Halloween this year, and it doesn’t exactly go as planned
A/N: Halloween Event 🎃
Please don’t plagiarize my work, you may reblog if you like but I’m asking that you don’t steal my hard work
Tumblr media
“For the record,” Allison piped up, wearily eyeing the door in front of her, “This was not what I had in mind when we said we would do something fun for Halloween.”
“Well, Allison,” Five said, shoving his hands in his pockets, smiling sarcastically, “It was either this, or resurrecting the dead.” He sent to pointed look in yours and Klaus’s direction, “And we all know how that ended last year.”
You threw your hands up in mock surrender, “Well, excuse me if I didn’t realize that spell would also open up a portal to hell in our living room!”
Luther shuddered slightly at the memory, “I’ll take the haunted house over going through that again any day.” He admitted.
“I think it’ll be fun.” Viktor spoke up, ever the glass-half-full sibling.
“Are you guys sure I can’t just wait for you out here?” Ben asked hesitantly, looking paler than normal.
“Oh, come on, Benny boy!” Klaus sang dramatically, slinging an arm over his brother's shoulder, “It’ll be fun… just don’t be the last one in the room with them.” He made his voice extra creepy towards the end, and the black haired man visibly started shaking a little bit.
Five rolled his eyes at the theatrics his brother liked to put on, “Don’t listen to him, Ben, it’s just a bunch of underpaid college students in costume, none of it is real.”
“Unless it is.” Klaus leaned over to whisper in his ear once Five looked away.
“I still think this is stupid.” Diego finally said after having his speaking privileges provoked by Five on the way over for complaining.
“I don’t remember giving you permission to speak again.” Five hissed, the headache the man had caused earlier coming back to him.
“And I don’t remember putting you in charge!” He snapped back, stomping his foot once against the ground like a child.
“Next!” The employee in front of the building called, effectively cutting off any more sibling banter.
Everybody froze, none of them wanting to go in first until Five rolled his eyes and pushed to the front of the group, “You’re all idiots.” He stated.
None of you even had the strength to protest as you hesitantly trailed after your brother.
You were caught between Ben and Allison, the former gripping onto your hand tightly without a word, and the ladder linking your arms for comfort for the both of you.
The door was opened with an eery creek, and you all piled into the dark hallway with Five in the lead, and Luther in the back, much to his protest.
“Someone go behind me!” He whisper shouted at his siblings, glancing behind him through the almost pitch black room.
“Hell no!” You used the same tone of voice as you replied, gripping onto Ben and Allison tighter.
All of you took slow, calculated steps forward, even Five had faltered a bit at the fact that nothing had happened yet.
Klaus dramatically threw his arms around Diego’s waist in terror and pulled himself into his brothers chest.
“Get off me,” The man hissed, flinging his hands away from him.
The long haired man stumbled back, but instead of hitting a wall, he hit a man who was dressed entirely in black, except for a mask of pure white that lit up all of a sudden, having gone completely unnoticed until then.
“Jesus! Klaus!” Diego cried, blindly flailing around until he caught onto his brother's arm and pulled him back towards him.
Klaus let out a mix between a shriek and wail, stumbling back into the group as you and Allison in sync let out yelps of surprise and Ben screamed in shock.
The man in the mask stood completely still, but titled his bright mask to the side as if he were staring at the siblings.
“No, no, no, nope,” Luther kept repeating, hurriedly ushering his family out of the room, muscles tensing as the masked man continued to stare after them.
By then, he wasn’t the only one that was tense. Five had taken his hands out of his pockets and Ben looked right about ready to faint.
Immediately after stepping into the next room, the sound of crazed laughter filled all of your ears, and the grip Ben had on your hand had begun to make you lose feeling.
“Just me,” Viktor quickly whispered into your ear over the noise before grabbing onto your shoulder, the total darkness making you two not want to get separated.
“This is fucking insane.” Diego said, wavering voice letting the others know that he was scared as well.
Then, without warning or so much as a sound, a dark, unrecognizable figure popped up right in front of you, screaming in your face.
A scream of your own left your lips as you stumbled back, accidently slipping out of all three of your siblings' grips and just barely catching yourself right before you hit the ground.
“Y/n!” Everyone called out in sync, worry filling their features.
The maniacal laughter returned and your eyes turned to the woman who’s dark silhouette was shaking, “Y/n! Y/n! Y/n!” She shrieked over and over again.
Ben had finally passed out and fallen into Allison’s hold, who was supporting his weight completely as he lost whatever little strength had been keeping him up in the first place.
Viktor stumbled over to you, grabbing onto your arm and pulling against it so that you would stand up, Five quickly rushing over and doing the same with the other one.
“That’s it!” He announced over the woman’s continual taunting, finally able to help his brother haul you to your feet, “We’re out of here!”
None of you had to be told twice as your eyes locked onto the large ‘exit’ sign in the corner for anyone who wanted to leave early and practically knocked the door off the hinges as you all piled out into the dark night.
The door slammed behind all of you, and it was silent for a moment as you all bent over and tried to catch your breaths, Ben having woken up as well.
“So,” You finally panted out, “Can anyone else go for some apple pie right now?” You asked as if nothing happened.
Diego went along with it and nodded, straightening out and running a hand through his hair, “Yeah, I wouldn’t mind a slice right now.”
One by one, all of your siblings chorused their own agreements, too embarrassed to acknowledge what had just happened.
And so, you all made your way to the closest grocery store on Halloween night, acting as if none of you had just been scared out of your minds in a cheap haunted house.

Maybe five hargreeves and reader? ❤️ W/ “I was looking for you”
A/N: Set during the wedding episode, somewhere in between the speeches and the dancing and the drunkenness and the end of the world.
(Reader is the same as in my other TUA fics—she’s Reginald’s biological daughter, born thirteen or so years after the others).
Tumblr media
“I was looking for you,” Five said with an air of success as he walked slowly down the hallway, a bottle of champagne in one hand and his blazer in the other. He wasn’t drunk yet, but he was well on his way towards it. Alas, as always, matters concerning his youngest sister came before the alcohol.
You turned your head from where it had been facing the ceiling. You were lying on the floor of the hallway, just far enough from the wedding party to successfully drown out the noise.
“Why?” you asked. Five stopped by your legs and shrugged. He glanced around before lowering himself to lie beside you, carefully placing the bottle next to him so it couldn’t get knocked over.
“You’re not one to miss a family celebration,” he said as he laced his fingers on his stomach. He moved to glance at you, missing your gaze by a second as you turned back to the ceiling. You were chewing at your bottom lip in a way that confirmed to Five what he had considered as the reason for you slipping out of the party before it had barely started. You’d been there one minute and gone the next, a hardly noticeable fact to someone who didn’t customarily scan the room every so often, just to ensure that everyone who should be present was present. Of course, Five was the possessor of such customary scans. He’d gone looking for you the moment he’d noted your absence, not at all oblivious to your emotions in the past few days. The whole family were aware, and Five was pretty certain that anyone would be better than him in this situation, but they’d been busy, and the alcohol was surging his confidence in his brotherly attributes already.
“Not much to celebrate.” Your mumbling permeated his thoughts, and he blinked himself back to reality. A loud burst of laughter seemed to echo down the hallway and you shut your eyes, letting your chest heave with a deep, totally needed breath. Five silently watched as you did so.
“Yeah,” he said after a moment, “you’re not wrong. Still, shouldn’t hold ourselves back in spite of that, right? Luther’s married now. I’d rather celebrate than...” He scrunched his nose in consideration. “Incinerate.”
Your gaze snapped to your brother, your face a picture of hardly concealed horror that had Five wincing. He sucked in a deep breath and ran quickly over possible words of consolidation in his head. He wasn’t tipsy enough for this.
“Am I the only one here who’s absolutely shitting myself?” You sat up and crossed your legs in front of you. “You’d think after the first and second apocalypse I’d get used to the idea of the world ending and me dying, but this time it’s—it’s so much realer. We’re actually gonna die.”
Despite Five’s faint victory at having you spill your usually carefully concealed emotions quicker than he knew was normal, he found that concern far prioritised it. Slowly, he pushed himself up, leaning back on his elbows. His brows knit together in swift sobriety as he dipped his head in acknowledgement. “Y/N...”
You tossed your hands up, your eyes suddenly welling with tears. “I’m not wrong, Five!” You pointed down the hallway. “They can sing and dance and—and kiss and make cheesy speeches all they want, but the fact of the matter is we’re all going to die. And I know they know that, and I know this party is a way to be together and distract ourselves from what’s coming, but it doesn’t always just work like that! I can’t—dispel it outta my mind. Whatever I do, whoever I’m with, it’s there. Reminding me over and over again that these are my last few breaths.” You squeezed your eyes shut and brought your hands to cover them. “I’m not one of you,” you said. “I don’t have powers. I’m just...normal. I’m a normal person surrounded by very much not normal people, and I really do feel like I’m the only one here who’s fucking terrified.”
If you were in the thinking mood, you would have pegged your brother’s face as unusually sympathetic once you’d opened your eyes and cleared your hazy vision. It wasn’t a secret to the family that Five had been away far too long to know how to comfort the youngest of you. If Diego were in his place, he’d sit opposite you and drill into you exactly everything you needed to hear, with his hands on your shoulders to ensure you looked him in the eye and couldn’t escape. Luther would cosy up beside you and try to distract you in his ridiculous, yet favourable, ways. Klaus usually made you meditate when he could sense you weren’t happy, then he grabbed you up in a bear hug and spoke a load of nonsense until you laughed. Allison was your usual go-to, your connection likely a result of growing up without a mother, while Viktor, though not entirely adept at consolation, had a way of soothing you with his hesitant words of supposed wisdom.
Five didn’t have the harshness of Diego, the humour of Luther, the stupidity of Klaus, the motherly nature of Allison, or the softness of Viktor. Put together, it created the exact combination you often needed. Five had to fit in there somewhere. He loved his siblings and you were obviously the most accepting of what little affection he sometimes provided, but the years he’d been away had been the entirety of your life before. He hadn’t been there then, but he was here now, and if there was one thing he had to offer, it was life experience.
“Would it help if I told you I’m just as terrified?“ he asked slowly. When you lowered your hands to look at him, he bumped his brows in silent repetition of the question.
Your shoulders dropped as you let out a breath. You sniffed and wiped at your cheek. “Yes, actually,” you admitted.
“Well—” Five lay back again, reaching his arms above his head— “I am. We all are, I assure you. I’ve experienced many doomsdays, Y/N, and it never gets easier.” He offered a smirk in your direction. “If you can believe that.”
You smiled lightly and pulled your knees up to your chest as he continued.
“You’re right that this is different. You’re right that we haven’t got long, and you’re right that this wedding stuff is just a distraction. But what’s wrong with a distraction?”
“It’s not the distraction, it’s…” You faltered, biting your tongue and dropping your gaze in obvious reluctance. Somehow, saying the words felt as though it would fuel the harshness of your reality.
“I know, I know,” Five said. “It’s the reason for the distraction.” He sighed, his eyes hardening as he looked at you. “I don’t know what to say that’ll make this any easier. For once, I can’t do anything that I haven’t tried. And I’m sorry. For your sake, I’m so sorry. Because you don’t deserve this. You don’t deserve us as siblings or Reginald as your father. What you do deserve is a good shot at life, and you’re not going to get that. So if this celebration is for anyone, it’s for you, and nobody in there would disagree with me.” He turned his head down the corridor, the beats of the music reverberating around you. He could hear Luther yelling something, probably butchered lyrics, and then there was a clash. In an attempt not to come up with all kinds of scenarios as to what that could have been, he turned back to you. You looked far more deflated but far less terrified. Five couldn’t tell if that was good or not. Still, he softened his expression and reached a hand out to squeeze your knee. “There’s not much we can do now,” he said gently, “other than try to make the best of what we have left and…remember everything good before.”
You sniffed and nodded slowly. You picked at a loose thread on the jeans you’d been wearing since arriving at the hotel. “There’s quite a lot of good to remember,” you murmured. Five’s lips quirked up in a half-hearted smile.
"Enough to tide you over until the end, you think?”
“Do you think it’ll hurt?”
He let his cheeks fill with air at that question before he exhaled. The truth was that he had no idea. It had never gotten to that point in all the other apocalypses. But sometimes, lying is the best thing you can do for someone in a situation. Often, the recipient of that lie knows the percentage of truth to it.
“Nah,” he said, waving it off with a flick of his wrist. “It’ll be like falling asleep, just with less control.” He hesitated then, staring at a stain on the ceiling. Perhaps his next words were subconscious, said without much thought. And perhaps they were as much a reassurance for him as they were for you. “I think that whatever happens, we’ll all be together.”
You allowed a short silence, settling with the new facts, then breathed a short laugh through your nose. “You’re drunk,” you said.
Five narrowed his eyes and whipped them to lock with yours. What a way to ruin a heartfelt conversation. Especially one that wasn’t particularly easy for him to partake him.
“You’d know if I was drunk,” he stated honestly. “Trust me, this is all coming from here.” He tapped his head. After a moment’s pause, he pointed at his heart. “And a bit from here, I guess.” Before your smile could widen any further, he heaved himself up into a sitting position and picked up his champagne bottle. “That’s not to say I won’t be getting drunk. You want some?”
“Legal drinking age is twenty-one.”
Five grimaced, his entire body recoiling at your comment. “I’m...gonna pretend you didn’t just say that.” At your shrug, he tipped his head slightly to the side, pressed his lips together in a thin line, and gave you a dead stare. “It’s the end of time, little sister. Have a drink.”
You took the extended bottle with an amused roll of your eyes and circled your finger around the top. “Thank you, Five.”
“Hey, I’m not bowing down to goodbye speeches, but if I’m gonna say one thing, it’s thank you. I’ve done a lot of bad stuff in my life…seen a lot of crap, lived through of a lot of ‘the ends’…but you, Y/N, are a gentle ripple in an ocean of pernicious waves. Always have been, always will be. Wherever we end up after this.”
There were moments when Five acted less like the imperious, sarcastic old man he was, and more like the brother you often wished for and imagined. You’d been a baby when he’d disappeared, so this Five was the only Five you knew, but your siblings often talked about the Five before. Moments like these, not that there were many, brought you close to what knowing that Five might have felt like.
“Heyyy! What’re we doing?” Klaus’s voice, followed by the slam of a door, echoed down the hallway, interrupting any response you may have given. You and Five turned towards it, him grabbing his bottle back and taking a long swig at the sight of your eccentric brother, very obviously already drunk, strutting towards you.
“Five’s drunk,” you told him, your voice airy in a way that told Five you were happier in yourself after your conversation.
He made a noise as the top of the bottle popped out of his mouth. “I’m not drunk yet,” he said again, pointing a finger at you.
“Are we getting drunk?” Klaus tripped over his own feet just as Ben stumbled out of the party room with his own bottle of half-finished, currently unidentifiable alcohol. “‘Cause I’m toootally down for that.”
“You’re already drunk, Klaus,” you reminded him. You lay back down again and let him squeeze his intoxicated self between you and Five.
“More is less, Titch,” Klaus said dreamily as he reached an arm across you and pulled you into his side.
You laughed, your face squished against his shoulder. “That is not the saying.”
“Anyone want some whiskey?” Ben asked before he flopped down beside Klaus and the bottle he’d been holding emptied its contents over his chest. “Fucking shit.”
“Benerrino! No swearing with the children around.” Klaus covered your ears and lifted a leg to stretch across you and towards Five. Five hit his foot away and shifted to lie beside you before he silently pulled a handkerchief from a pocket of his blazer and tossed it to Ben.
“Ah! You’re a gem, kid.”
“Not a kid, kid.”
Klaus gasped. “There’re, like, blood stains on this ceiling."
“Hey, party-poopers!” Four heads turned, the two drunkest lifting theirs with audible effort to see above you and Five. Diego had stuck his head out the party room and was confoundedly staring at them. A second later, Lila’s head appeared above him. “The hell are you doing out here?” Diego called, tossing his arms up in question.
“Getting drunk!” Klaus lifted Ben’s empty whiskey bottle.
“Count me in!” Lila said. A moment later she was lying beside Five. Another moment later, a yelp of shock sounded from Diego as Lila yanked him down next to her. A series of muttered insults spewed between them, though Diego made no move to get up.
No one was quite sure when Viktor joined the line you’d made in the hallway of the Hotel Obsidian, or when Allison appeared on the top step of the opposite staircase, her head leaning against the banister. At some point, Luther and Sloane had come searching for you, the former insisting that you come dance with him to your karaoke song, but had ended up tacking themselves onto the end of the line. There were both full and empty bottles of varying alcohol strewn around you, and a few bowls of snacks that Lila had raced back to grab. The ten of you had then broken into unrestrained laughter when Lila told them that Reginald and Chet had resorted to an apparently awkward silence with the absence of the Hargreeves family.
You talked, you got drunk, you laughed, Luther cried. Memories resurfaced and Diego finally discovered that it was Five who’d put slugs in his bed when they’d been kids. Allison laughed for the first time since the beginning of this apocalypse and she and Sloane engaged in some absent game of catch with a single m&m. Ben drunkenly apologised a grand total of six times for being a dick and Luther cried again after saying he forgave him. Klaus may have unofficially married Lila and Diego and Viktor got hit in the face with a sushi roll.
And, as you glanced across at Five, smiling at the wink he gave you, you genuinely believed that if the world were to end now, you were so happy you wouldn’t even notice.

Ben hargreeves x female!reader
this is kinda bad sorryyy kinda went off request sorry :((
Based in season 3 so spoilers! same tw as TUA reader cries
Hi 🥹 Could I request Ben Hargreeves x Reader where reader used to be in a relationship with the old Ben before he moved on into the afterlife and sparrow Ben catches on to their trauma and falls for reader and does everything he can to be good for them, I know it’s weirdly specific but I just thought it’d be cute 🥺
Luther has you thrown over his shoulder while Diego Lila and Five follow behind "Lila dont let him do this to me! i thought we where in love" you yell out making Lila "oh baby we are in love thats why im letting him do this"
Diego scoffs "why are you so nice to my little sister and not to me what is this?" he asks making Lila scoff back "look at her" she says poiting at your pouty face "I DONT WANNA SEE BEN" you yell out making Sloane look at you
"Y/n i dont know why you dont like Ben but you need to get over it-" she goes to say but is cut off by the door opening to the house "finally you oafs are here" Ben says
"Put y/n down" Allison scolds making Luther glare at her before putting you down, you quickly walk over to Allison ignoring Ben and let her lead you to the living room
When everyone is in the living room you walk over to Five before sitting down on the floor in front of him and putting your head on his thigh "i dont wanna be here" you whisper softly
Ben is talking to Fei and every once in a while his eyes shoot towards you, before he sends a glare to Five who is now playing with your hair "lover boy keeps glaring at me" Five tells you with a chuckle
You open your mouth to reply but are interupted by a "where is he?" "Viktor" someone says
An argument breaks out and Ben plops down on the couch next to Five "20 on the little one" Ben says "Ill take that action" Five replies before leaning down and placing a kiss to the top of your head and sending a smirk to Ben
The latter scoffs making your head turn to him before it quickly turns back around, hand squeezing your dress tightly "i know Harlan killed all our mothers"
You let out a gasp, free hand reaching for the first thing it can hold, which happens to be Ben's knee, his eyes shoot to your hand in shock before he reaches and holds onto your hand, squeezing softly with a soft look on his face "Viktor you didnt tell us, hes the reason we are in this and you lied to us.. to me about it" you ask, face filled with hurt
"y/n look thi-" Viktor starts but is cut off but you raising your hand that was squeezing your dress "just please dont Viktor"
Five looks from Viktor to you before seeing Ben holding your hand, Five sends a glare to Ben before he peels your hand out of Ben's and holds it in his own, he leans over to Ben and starts whispering "dont touch my sister, a version of you hurt her before im not gonna let you hurt her aswell" Five sneers before pulling you onto his lap, arms wrapping around you protectivly
You squeeze his hand softly and let him hold you "SHUT YOUR MOUTH" you hear Allison yell making you flinch in Fives arms "how are you doing this without saying i heard a rumor?" Five asks shocked
"just a little residual gift from Harlan" Allison replies
"Allison you need to stop" you gasp out looking at your sister choking your brother "ALLISON" you yell out when she doesnt stop, you jump up and throw your arm in the air, a vine shoots out and softly hits Allison making her lose focus and release Viktor
Five grabs onto your waist and pulls you inbetween him and Ben and when they notices Allison glaring at you they glare right back
Small time skip
You look at the kugelblitz "i could just make a box, no need to endanger Christopher i mean what if it goes wrong" you ramble "its like if it explodes the vines ill only feel a small burning in my veins, if its inside big C HE WILL DIE" you yell the last part, you start pacing "i mean we already lost so many people to this fuck fuck, we dont need to lose more"
Ben grabs your arm and his other hand grabs your face softly "Hey dollface calm the fuck down, everything is gonna work out just fine" he whispers and you melt into his touch, his face turns into shock, ever since you have gotten here you have barely even looked at him and now your melting in his touch
"Have you ever moves a nest of bees?" Sloane asks Lila scoffs "No because thats weird"
You step away from Ben "Lila you have remember when i summoned all those flowers and bee nests n you just threw one at me its probably like that" "its not like that at all dont give her ideas please" Sloane is quick to shut your idea down "kinda rude" you mutter before walking over to Diego, you manhandle his arms so he is holding you against his chest
"you couldve just asked me to move my arms you know that right? why are you and Lila like this?" Diego asks making you snort "its because Lila and i are soulmates, when this is over she and i shall marry"
"Thats true!" Lila says "Okay lets do this thing, i got a girl to wife up"
Diego lets go of you, he presses a quick kiss to your forehead and pushes you into Ben "she gets hurt im fucking killing you" Diego spits to Ben before he walks up to Grace who has just appeared
You burry your head into Ben's chest who holds onto you tightly "Look" he says while walking backwards until he hits the wall and is out of Grace's sight "I dont know what that other Ben did to you, but im not like him okay? Please give me a chance, i mean its the end of the fucking world, please give me chance" he begs softly "i can see that he hurt you but i would never hurt you" he confesses
Grace shoots fire in your direction and Ben goes to spin you around so his back is towards Grace but you break out of his grip, you put your arms to your side before pulling roots from the ground and wrapping her up fully in the roots, you throw her to Five who blinks them away
Ben grabs onto your wrist and spins you around "she couldve fucking hurt you" he scolds "but she didnt, see i can do things, im useful!" you beam making Lila yell "HELL YEAH YOU ARE" making Sloane scold her "focus!"
Christopher closes the Kugelblitz inside of him and Lila falls to the ground, you rush out of Ben's grip and run to Lila putting her head on your chest "fuck yeah love boobs in my face" Lila says with a smirk making you snort "OKAY YEAH ENOUGH THATS MY SISTER LILA" Diego yells "stop hitting on my sister why are you like this?" he asks her
Another small time skip
Everyone is now in the living room, people are dancing, Viktor is on the couch, Allison in the doorway, and y/n is laying on the floor surrounded by flowers and holding a bottle of soda, bees and butterflies flying around her
Footsteps approach her before someone lays down next to her "you not drinking?" Five asks her "no one of us idiots should stay sober" you tell him making him hum in agreement, he puts his arm around your shoulder "i love you, thank you for being here for me" Five says his words slurring a little
"i love you too little man" "I AM NOT LITTLE" Five yells out making you laugh "sure Five sure" you say before getting up, placing a kiss on his forehead
You walk outside the living room into a hallway and outside the door, you lay down in an empty field, the field fills with colorful flowers immediately
Its then a shockwave hits "I FUCKING TOLD THEM" you yell before running back towards the building, you run into Diego and Lila "Hotel hotel hotel" they yell out while pointing towards it the three of you run towards the hotel
"im done" you yell out when you enter the hotel, you throw yourself on the hard floor "leave me here to die!" you dramatically exlaim Ben walks up to you and sits down pulling your head onto his lap "so what now genius" he sarcastically asks Five "Paws off my sister, knock off, also that was your plan so its your fault" he fights
"NO FIGHTING" you yell "you guys shouldve just let me used my vines but nooo nobody ever listens to y/n because people cant be pretty and smart acording to you, you guys are all just.. just y/nphobic?" you ask "yeah y/nphobic" you say before getting up and sitting at the bar
You listen to everyone and when Ben and Diego start fighting in another language you turn around "thats kinda hot" you loudly say making Lila agree
Ben turns to look at you with a smirk and he walks up to you "yeah no" he is quickly stopped by Luther "not my sister" he says "SAYS THE GUY WHO IS DATING MY SISTER" Ben yells out
"can you guys stop" you say before walking over to Ben and put your head on his chest, he softly holds onto you and places a kiss on the top of your head
"can we all just be nice to eachother? we are all gonna die" you ask them "please" you beg softly, voice cracking tears filling your eyes, Ben softly rocks you "dont cry flora" he whispers
Ben walks backwards and sits down on a chair pulling you to straddle his lap, you put your head in the crook of his neck
Luther clears his throat "we've uh got a little announcement to make" "we are engaged!" they finish together, you giggle against Ben's neck "the world is ending lets get married!" you mock softly making Ben smirk
Its then Klaus walks up "KLAUS!" you yell getting up from Ben's lap and jumping onto your brother "I thought you died!" you say making klaus laugh "IM IMMORTAL" he yells spinning you around "Okay nathan young" you say making Klaus laugh
"yeah not to interupt the reunion but can i have my girl back?" Ben asks looking at you and Klaus "yeah ofcourse benerino!" Klaus says carrying you over to Ben "WAIT YOUR GIRL?" Klaus asks dropping you "OUCHIE" you yell out with a pout "Klausie why do you hate me?" you ask
Ben walks up to you and holds his hand out for you before pulling you up and dragging you back to the chair and onto his lap again "touch her again and ill kill you okay?" Ben says to Klaus making you slap his shoulder "be nice thats my favorite kinda gay sibling" you tell Ben making him lift his hands in the air "sorry doll"
"you gotta be nice to my family" you say before letting yourself fall from Ben's lap "wait why did you bring dad?" you ask klaus with a pout "We dont like that guy"
Ben goes to reach out for you but Five sends him a glare and blinks to you before blinking you both to a chair
Time skip to the buffalo room on the other side
When you get separated from Diego and Lila you go to find them, you end up in the lobby where you fall to your knees and you start crying, you hear loud footsteps run into your direction before you are pulled into someones arms "I got you doll, let it all out" Ben whispers
"Its too much Ben its too much" you sob out holding onto him "i know angel i know" he says holding onto you tighter "its almost over, i promise you, my love, and when this is over i hope you will let me show you how good we would be together"
Diego walks up behind Ben "y/n whats wrong?" he asks, you go to reply but only sobs come out "shes overwhelmed" Ben tells him "Its fine i got her" he continues making Diego nod at him before he walks back to Lila
Its then the ceiling smashes, Ben pushes you so you slide and land next to Allison, Five starts yelling about stars and they all get on one, when the life starts draining from everyone you get up, tears still rolling down your cheeks "im not losing him again" you whisper before using your powers to find a apple seed inside reginalds stomach, you focus on it growing
Reginald falls to the ground with a tree growing from his mouth, you rush over to Ben and pull his head to your chest "are you okay?" you ask him, Ben just smiles before he pushes his head up and just as his lips are about to hit yours you are all teleported
You frown and walk out of the elevator only to be pulled in someones arms "IM ALIVE!" Luther yells while squeezing you, you sniffle tears dried to your cheek, you slap Luther "how dare YOU DIE ON ME" you ask before bursting into tears again "i thought i lost you you dumb oaf"
Luther looks around shocked, Ben walks up and gets me out of Luther's arms "Hey flora its okay" Ben says while stroking your hair, Diego and Lila walk up to you "we are leaving, you wanna come with us?" Lila asks "we can finally get married!" she beams making you giggle "no you guys go ahead" you say
Diego frowns "you gonna go with Viktor or Five?" he asks making you shake your head "i would like to go with Ben if he is okay with that?" you ask looking up at Ben whose face breaks into a smile "really? course im fucking okay with that my little angel" he says before lowering his head and pressing his lips on yours
"NO THATS MY WIFE" Lila yells "y/n your cheating on me now?" you hear Lila's voice fade and Diego scoff
"stop sucking faces with my sister" Five says making you pull away from Ben "oops" you softly say making ben chuckle
"Listen Ben, you hurt my sister and i will personally be the cause of your death okay? and ill make it look like an accident" Viktor threatens making you shiver in Ben's hold "Im not gonna hurt her, she means the world to me" he says before he starts pulling you with him
"Lets get started on our new life Flora"

Warnings: talking about death, sad Five.
Tumblr media
Five looked at Diego and Lila trying to find their “son” Stanley. Five rolled his eyes and sighed knowing the kid he probably got kugelblitz.
He turned his head a bit and grumbled, “Can you believe it Y/N they lost the kid they adopt all because they are sentient STDs.” He then actually looked at his side and saw no one. It’s been a habit lately that he talks to himself thinking his wife was just going to be there. He decided to ignore them for a bit and saw Luther and Sloane. They wanted them to join them at the Sparrow academy.
While walking to the academy he thought about everything he went the past 20 days and more. First, he landed in the courtyard of his house, back to his 20-year-old body. Then he tried to save that apocalypse from his brother, which made him take his family back in time to save them, he landed in the ’60s and tried to save his family from that apocalypse. Took them to the right time but not the right timeline and now he has a stupid kugelblitz to handle yet again. Can’t even get a break right Y/N?
He remembers finding a Polaroid camera during your little search in the apocalypse and taking a picture with you. He remembers your smile and the giggles you will let out when he will say something about his calculations that you knew you weren’t able to understand. It made him want to cry remembering you. He zones back when they got to the academy and Fei opens the door for them.
“Lovely to meet you.” Lila introduces herself to Fei.
“Welcome.” Fei returns to gesture, “make yourselves at home.” She tells the academy people.
Allison who was already in a bad mood, “bitch this is our home.” And sat down.
Five decided to ignore them for now and listen to what Diego noticed. “Where the hell is Viktor and Klaus?”
Five chuckled, “With our luck, probably kugelblitzed by now.”
Diego looked at him weirdly. “You’re a dark little dude sometimes.”
Five listened to Diego and Ben argue like little children and sighed. Jesus, why can’t they just get to the point? “Okay, if the testosterone twins are done, I’d like to get back to a plan.”
Viktor then jogged into the room looking around. He looked like he was about to be in tears.
“Where is he?” He asked looking at the Sparrow academy and then at Allison. Five also looked at them not knowing who they were talking about but having a clue who. Five zoned them out a bit, but Ben brought him back.
“20 bucks on the little one,” Ben whispered to Five while eating cheese puffs. Five looked at him and thought about it.
“I’ll take that action.” Five leaned to Ben to whisper to him, not wanting to get in the middle of his sibling's fight.
‘You shouldn’t be betting on your own siblings Miele that’s just mean coming from you.’ He can already know what would be his wife’s words if she was here.
“This wasn’t about saving the world. This was about hurting me. Payback for - -“ Viktor started, making Five stop thinking about his wife and listening to Viktor and Allison argue.
“Go on. Say her name.” Allison went on looking intimidating and looking down at Viktor. Five got tired of it and stood up.
“That’s it Allison we get it you’re hurt you lost your daughter, but everyone lost someone, not just you, you can’t just say this shit to Viktor, you killed someone important to him.” Five exclaimed back at Allison and everyone started looking at him. Five was pissed everyone lost someone, Luther lost Pogo in a way, Diego lost his mother, Klaus lost our Ben and Dave, and Viktor lost Sissy and now Harlan. Allison turned to him.
“You haven’t lost anyone Five you were stuck in the apocalypse and you were gone for years so how the hell can you say you lost someone!” She screamed at him while holding back tears. Five gave a painful laugh and looked at his sister with so much pain.
“You think I didn’t lose someone too?! I lost my own wife! My happiness I lost her to the stupid apocalypse that I so badly wanted to save all of you guys because those were her last words to me! To save my family! I lost the one person that kept me sane all those years from an illness that we both couldn’t do anything because guess what Allison!?” Five yelled while looking at her, “There was no medicine! No cure! No hospital! I saw the love of my life die in my arms! So to answer your stupid question sister yes I did lose someone are you happy now?!” Five finished and had to take deep breaths.
The whole family looked at him lost for words, not knowing what to tell their young but older brother from the news that he told them. Five sighed and started sniffling feeling the weight of guilt for his wife drowning him. “I lost the only person that I cared about, and I couldn’t do anything to keep her alive with me. I miss her. I miss my Y/N.” Five wept softly. Diego sighed and grabbed his brother and hugged him.
Five felt rigid not having felt a hug since the last one you gave him. He slowly stop tensing and hugged his brother back and cried. Five broke down his walls and held on to Diego for support.
“I miss her Diego and I can’t do anything to bring her back.”

Before A Fall [Five Hargreeves x F Reader]. Ch 5 (Hard Feelings Part 2)
SUMMARY: As your life begins to grow around Five's, his attitude becomes a little sinister. When does protection become suffocation and when does taking matters into your own hands become betrayal? (weekly updates) Chapter One - Chapter Two - Chapter Three - Chapter Four - Chapter Five - Chapter Six - Chapter Seven - Chapter Eight - Chapter Nine - Chapter Ten - Chapter Eleven - Chapter Twelve
Tumblr media
Five has a complex plan to communicate to his siblings...just not to you. Perhaps if he had, he might have been able to do less damage.
Tumblr media
Chemical testing below. Proceed at your own risk
Chapter 5: Mess Spectomentator
“-And once it’s through this column, the separated components go through an interface to turn it into something the vacuum in the MS device can deal with. After that it’s through the mass spectrometer and that’s how we detect substances. At that point, I need the software to actually analyze it.”
Luther is clearly lost. Klaus watches with polite, dreamy interest and Viktor’s forehead is wrinkled with concentration Only Sloane looks like she’s following him. Five stands by the blackboard still frozen in a gesticulation towards his ridiculous diagram.
“How long does it take”, asks Viktor, clearly not sure if this is the right question.
“If I were a real chemist- probably a two month study- but I don’t have that time and this is just a pilot- a primer to get public attention. If I had the solvents at home I can probably knock myself up the HPLC device with all of Dad’s old shit, but maybe not the mass spectrometer…”
“Uncle Viktor!”
Tumblr media
Five is gone when you wake up. No morning training today, apparently. You shower, dress, put on makeup and still see no sign of him. Downstairs, you stick your head round Santi’s bedroom door. He’s still asleep. Five has usually got him up for school by now. You gently wake him.
“Where’s Uncle Five?” he yawns.
“He must be making breakfast, come on buddy, let’s get dressed.”
You help him choose an outfit for school that’s partway appropriate, vetoing his initial choice of Bermuda shorts and dress-shoes.
Together you head downstairs, hearing voices from the living room.
“Uncle Viktor!” gasps Santi, recognising his voice. He runs through the living room doors and you follow.
It’s more than Uncle Viktor: he, Klaus, Luther and Sloane sit on one of the sofas. Five is standing before them, clearly paused in the act of explaining something to them.
On a blackboard beside him is an incomprehensible diagram drawn with coloured chalk. Arrows attach a crudely-drawn jerrycan to a complex machine upon which two bottles stand. The output of this first machine filters into one arrow, flowing into a box full of what looks like test tubes. SAMPLES is scrawled next to these. The arrow then follows on from a vertical tube (labeled HPLC) to a horizontal one, by which is scrawled something that looks like MESS SPECTOMENTATOR. Finally, the arrow leads to a box reading DETECTION/ANALYSIS.
When you enter, Five is still pointing his chalk at the ‘mess spectomentator’, but he hastily drops his arm. Santi receives quick hugs from all while you address the adults.
“Hey, you guys are here early." you turn to Five, “I didn’t know Santi needed getting up.”
“I’ve been busy.”
“I can see that. Is this about the soda?”
He nods but doesn’t elaborate. He looks at you and jerks his head a little. A dismissal: Once you’re gone, I can continue.
His brothers and sister-in-law notice his attitude. You see Klaus look from you to him and Sloane shifts uncomfortably. When you don’t obey his looks, he says:
“Can you get Santi breakfast and walk him to the bus stop for me today?”
You know you’re being dismissed, but you don’t have to like it.
“Yeah.” You say, stiffly, “Catch me up later, ok?”
“I’ll tell you what’s necessary.”
His tone makes it clear that this won’t be much.
“Ok”, you respond.
You’d given him an out that allowed you to retain at least some dignity in front of his siblings, (some sort of illusion of equality). You're good enough to suck his dick but not to tell his plans? You feel absolutely no guilt in being passive aggressive now. Fuck him.
"I’ll just keep my eye on the domestic matters and then I'll sit by the door waiting for you to get home. Like a faithful labrador, yeah?"
The sting lands. You see the darkness flash in his eyes as he remembers your comments on the night of your fight. He's hurt and angry. And you're glad.
Smiling at him sarcastically, you summon Santi with an outstretched hand and leave the living room.
Tumblr media
Klaus makes a noise of mock-horror.
“Oooooh you’re in trou-ble.”
Five exhales, “I’m used to it.”
“Maybe be less of an asshole then?” Luther mutters, just as Klaus says:
“Oooh! Are you doing the whole,” (he puts on a staccato Christian-Bale-batman voice) “‘Uhhhhh you don’t understand the burden of my power. I was in the apocalypse forever and nobody understaaaands- thing? I love that look on you!”
“No,” says Five, clearly annoyed but keeping his voice in check, “I’m doing the: Don’t want to drug myself to stay awake for several days -thing.”
Klaus smiles and gestures as if Five agreed with him.
“Exactly!”
Five ignores this and turns back to the group, his forbidding tone clearly conveying that the interruption is over.
“Up until the detection phase, the process takes an hour at most but that’s where it slows down. I need the proper software and it could take hours to produce the chromatograms. Once I have those it's a matter of interpreting them and then cross-referencing them with the compounds that are actually listed on the ingredients list.”
He puts his hands in his pockets, brow furrowed, and stares contemplatively at the diagram.
Luther, not entirely sure he’s getting this, ventures a question:
“Where can you access the software and get the…chrom-to-grams?”
“I was thinking the Chemistry department at the college. I’m going to have to break in.”
“Ooh, I’m coming!” says Klaus, eyes aglow.
“No,” says Five “I don’t need someone trying to smoke anything not nailed down.”
“But you never did any of this before, right? What if there’s some old ghostie chemist dude we can pump for information?”
This is revelatory to Five.
“That’s…actually not a bad idea…”
He considers and then discounts it.
“But I’m banking on getting in by stealth. I have the advantage of at least looking like a student.”
Before Klaus can protest to this implied slight, Sloane speaks for the first time:
“I don’t understand why you’re talking about building a device when you’ve got to be in the college lab for hours anyway. Why not just use theirs? Won’t it all be hooked up together anyway?”
Five points at her, “True. I'm overcomplicating it. What’s eight hours instead of seven?"
He exhales and sags a little, hips canting backwards and foot tapping as he thinks.
"So this meeting is more of a…reconnaissance thing?” His hands dart into his pockets again, “Has anybody got any contacts at the college?”
They all turn to Viktor, the only one of them who had been to college.
“There wasn’t exactly much need for a chemistry department at the School of Music.”
“Okay. So, I’m just going to have to go in blind. I’ll do what research I can about the building layout, but I go in tonight.”
“Can’t you just…blink right in?” asks Sloane.
“Not when I can’t see where I’m going. I don’t know the rooms well enough.”
“What do you need from us?” asks Luther
“To be honest, I just wanted to run it past you. I didn't want to go maverick and not keep you guys informed. If anything happens, you’ll know why and you’ll be able to pick up where I left off.”
Tumblr media
Five did not tell you the necessary. Unless you count a hastily scrawled note stuck to the front door before you took Santi to the bus stop.
The asshole.
Now, with Santi asleep, you and Klaus are sitting in the living room sharing a couple of drinks. He’s so understanding, so good-humored and so effortlessly beguiling that you forget he’s Five’s brother. Though you tried not to confide in him and tried not to cry, it had happened anyway.
He looks over at the now-erased blackboard and lays his head back on the sofa.
“He’s a prick.”
You nod.
“What’s he doing?”
Klaus waves an airy hand.
“Chemistry stuff. Dressing as a student, breaking into Colombia's labs and doing experiments on two cans of JUICED. One from the school, one from the store. He's trying to work out whether there are funky ingredients in there that aren’t on the label- you know, the sort of thing that might cause kids to sprout tumors. Then he's maybe going to a frat party for all I know.”
“Why couldn’t he tell me that?”
“Because he’s a prick.”
You raise your hands in a gesture of angry disbelief, “I have a friend who’s a PhD chemist there!”
Klaus breaks into giggles “Oh that’s too perfect. That asshole’s probably staking out, stealing keys and you could have got him in fine all along. He really is a prick.”
When he calms down, he becomes uncharacteristically serious:
"You know it's because he loves you, right?"
"Of course," you reply, laying your head back too, "I just wish he didn't show it by being so...patronizing."
"He used to be the same with me. When I was 'over-medicating',” he air-quotes, "He kinda still is. He can be mean. It's how he deals with wanting to protect someone he thinks is..." he trails off.
"...A liability?" you finish for him.
"Yeeeah."
He turns to look at you and his eyes fill with sympathy. Then, tenderly he asks:
"You wanna go take a shit in his underwear drawer?"
You laugh for the first time in a while.
"Y'know Klaus, if we didn't share an underwear drawer, I might take you up on that."
Klaus clasps both hands to his heart.
"You share an underwear drawer? Awh! That is too sweet... And it's so convenient for his panty-stealing thing!"
You both enjoy the hilarity for a few moments, you unsure how he knows about the pair of panties Five had 'liberated' from your apartment that time. Then a thought seems to strike him and his eyes glint with more mischief.
“Did you see the papers today? I usually don't but I saw the headline and I had to get it.”
“No.”
He jogs from the room and returns with a newspaper which he throws onto your lap.
“They’re all like this, but I think this one got his good side.”
'UMBRELLA ACADEMY: MYSTERY MAN IMPERSONATES MISSING MEMBER,' screams the headline.
Beneath this is a picture of Five, looking surly, captioned: 'The public is warned to approach with caution: the man claiming to be Number Five, spotted in a Manhattan bar'
You look up at Klaus and he nods towards the article itself:
'NEW YORK- A man claiming to be the Umbrella Academy's lost Number Five has shown 'disruptive and antisocial behavior in a recent incident at Holbrook elementary school A witness claims that a young man disrupted a meeting held by the school's principal to inform parents about student support measures. "He was crazy," says David Wilson, father of a third-grader, "[he was] talking about pedophilia in the Catholic church, getting my kids tested for all kinds of illnesses. I think he's one of those flat earth nuts. He certainly said the name Hargreeves to me." Reports suggest that the unknown man attended the meeting at Holbrook Elementary and caused disruption with 'unhinged' behavior. A source close to the Hargreeves family has confirmed that this man has been seen entering and leaving their New York City-based compound, but no verified members of the now-disbanded Academy have been reached for comment...'
You've read enough and look up at Klaus.
"What the hell is this doing on the front page?"
He shrugs. You furrow your brow and look back at the paper.
“You think this is the soda company?”
“I guess so." says Klaus, "Looks like they got their tentacles in a lot of pies. It shows he’s at least onto something while being an asshole.”
Tumblr media
Luckily for Five, the plans and blueprints of the chemistry building had been available via public access. Even more luckily for his purposes, the specifications had to be detailed due to the nature of the experiments that needed to take place there.
He sat in the library poring over these until he knew them by heart. He was hoping to simply hide in plain sight and be a student doing an experiment. He had been to a convenience store on the way to the college, grabbing himself a second can of JUICED.
It was easy getting into the lab. All he had to do was lurk until he could follow someone in, walking with the confidence of someone who knew where he was going and had, of course, been here many times. Now he knew the floorplan well, he could have blinked in, but didn’t want to startle any unsuspecting students. Staying under the radar for now, at least, was paramount.
Instead, he kept close behind a scholarly-looking girl as she used her swipe card, simultaneously trying not to spook her by getting too close. As they stepped into the elevator together, she looked him up and down.
He had changed into a pair of Viktor’s jeans and a flannel shirt open over a t-shirt. He carried a backpack containing the two cans (provenance labeled). He feels awkward, as usual, but the outfit helps him to look the part. Or at least more like the part.
“Hey,” says the girl.
“Hi.”
He nods a little tersely, placing his hands into the jean pockets. He tries not to engage in conversation but she’s inconveniently loquacious.
“I’ve not seen anyone else in the labs at this time of year.”
This is great news for getting in and out undetected, but the fact that she’s taking such an interest is inconvenient.
 Who’s your supervisor?”
“Professor Kaufman,” he says, his cursory faculty research allowing him to choose a plausible name.
“Cool. I’m under Doctor Evans.” He nods as if he knows who she’s talking about beyond a name printed in the department prospectus.
The elevator reaches the right floor and he’s thankful to be leaving her presence, although he knows from his research that they will likely be going the same way. He follows her into a PPE room, where they both don protective equipment. Inconveniently, she continues chatting to him.
"I'm Sarah, by the way."
She gives him a small, cheery wave.
"Nice to meet you Sarah.”
It's all he intends to say but she smiles at him expectantly until the awkwardness gets to him.
"I'm Kieran,” he says.
He has no idea why he chooses this. Though, while he thinks this, he realizes it wasn’t entirely random. It was one of the names Grace gave him to choose from when he was young: Kieran, Michael, Shane, Daniel, or James. All were common in Ireland, his birth country, but he’d never connected with any of them.
He sidelines the memory and hurries on.
"The HPLC is down the hall and to the right, right?”
“Um- I think so.”
“Thanks.”
Tumblr media
Now he sits in front of the computer screen as the machine hums and purrs with his two sets of samples. He brought Persuasion with him to pass the time but he hasn’t yet touched it. It’s coming time for the long detection and analysis phase and he didn’t think about logins. Logins! So simple but so frustrating. He's tried all the tricks he knows, but he simply doesn't have the requisite knowledge of the college intranet. He drums his gloved fingers on the work surface.
His mind revolves to the only solution.
He pops his head around the door of the neighboring lab-space, wishing the PPE had pockets he could put his hands into.
“Hi again Sarah”
“Hey Kieran”
“Can I ask you a favor?”
“Sure.”
“Well, I’m a transfer here from University of Chicago and the IT guys never really got my login to work. It's a real pain in the ass. I can’t login to the computer to analyze my results…could I maybe borrow your login?”
He gives her his fake, shark-like smile and she eyes him suspiciously. She's too clever for her own good.
“I’d- if you don’t mind, I’d rather not.”
“It’s just,” he tries, “it took me so long to prepare my samples. They’re in the machine now and they’ll be wasted if I can’t produce output.”
“I can find you the number of the IT desk if you like?”
“I wouldn’t ask you to give me the login- I’d ask you to type it in.”
“Still…”
Five sighs. He was hoping it wouldn’t come to this but, since it has, he may as well turn it to his advantage.
Tumblr media
When Sarah comes round, face down, Five is bending over her. He has her arms and legs tied together and behind her with wires he’s pulled from lab equipment in the room she was in.
“I’m sorry about this,” he says to her struggling, terrified figure, speaking as if he’s accidentally nicked her car in a parking lot, “I don’t want to hurt you but I really am going to need those logins.”
Her cries would be noisy but for the gag he fashioned from the flannel shirt extracted from beneath his PPE. He gives her a while to calm down, trying not to show any impatience.
She tries to talk, tears rolling down her cheeks.
“Promise to be quiet?” he asks. She nods vigorously and he loosens his shirt.
She doesn’t even attempt to dissemble, telling him her login without him having to ask again, tears streaming all-but silently down her face. Once he’s in, he opens the software and sets it to analyze the output of the spectrometer. Thankfully, the machine he’s using is fairly intuitive to the impression he’s gained from research and a little prior knowledge.
“Can…can I go now?”
“Not yet, I’m afraid. I’m going to have to keep you here for a few hours. I may need your help interpreting the output once I’m done.”
“Please!” she seems to cast around, desperate for an out, “I-it's not a specialism of mine!”
“It's identifying compounds. You could do it in your sleep. Hell, I could probably do it in my sleep but I want another opinion. I just want to cross reference them with an ingredients list to identify anything that shouldn’t be in there. In one or both of the cans I'm using.”
He tries to give her a friendly smile, but it doesn't have the desired effect. She sobs a little, but not loudly enough to make him reattach the gag.
While the software does its thing, he picks up Persuasion and begins to read.
After nearly two hours, he notices her shifting. His eyes dart upwards from the book, suspicious that she’s attempting to escape her bonds, but she’s just uncomfortable having been in the unnatural position for too long.
He marks his page, jumps down off the work surface he’s perched on and pulls over a sturdy lab stool.
“Let me fix that.”
She shrinks from him as he bends over, but he ignores this, loosening the wires so that she can move her legs. He pulls her upwards and lifts her onto the stool as gently as he can. He leans her against the work surface so she doesn’t topple over and then reties her ankles to the stool’s legs and her wrists behind her back.
“Better?”
“Yes.” She whispers.
She looks terrified. He doesn’t like to see this. He regrets that he’s probably giving this bright young academic the crowning trauma of her short life. He sighs.
“Sarah, I promise you I wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t absolutely necessary. In case you haven't guessed, I'm not a student. I think the soda I’m testing is giving children brain tumors. Four so far. ”
She doesn’t reply, starting to cry a little again.
“Just a few more hours,” he says, picking up his book again.
At hour four, her stomach rumbles. He reaches into his backpack, which makes her panic until she sees he's only holding a party size pack of Ruffles. These, he shares with her silently, freeing one of her hands. He makes sure that she has over half the pack, (it only seems fair given the circumstances). Afterwards, he pours her coffee from his Thermos too.
When at last the software is ready to produce output, he drags her beside him, both hands retied, being careful to support her on the stool.
“So: here’s our ingredient list and here’s our two sets of output. Some of these are easy to check off and are in both cans.”
They work through it together; Sarah co-operating better than he could have hoped. At last, they have identified all the ingredients save one, present only in the sample he gathered from Holbrook Elementary.
“So…what is it?” says Five, squinting at the screen, “This must be the thing I’m looking for.”
Sarah leans forward, “I think…it should be pretty accurate but I think the software has…guessed. Like it can't recognise the compound. It's indicating ethylmethane but that error margin is huge."
“What can you tell me about ethylemethane?”
“Erm…I think…I think...if we're talking cancer then...it's a mutagen.”

❝I’m not your boss.❞
Y/n sat in the kitchen alone. Her coffee steamed, and she took little sips until it was cool enough. She waved her hand, and the coffee pot moved to the table. Her body felt drained. She heard the music being played in the living room. When it ended half an hour later, she heard footsteps coming toward her. Diego appeared in the archway.
“Want some company?”
“I wouldn’t mind.”
Diego smiled and took a seat across from her. Y/n waved her hand, and a mug floated out of the cabinet onto the table. Diego grabbed the pot and poured the warm coffee into the cup. He took a small sip and hummed, satisfied. The mug clicked when it hit the table.
“Remember when it was just you and I?”
She smiled, “Of course, I do.”
“I miss those days.”
“I do too,” Y/n’s finger traced the table, “Maybe one day.”
Diego stayed quiet, and Y/n took a sip of her coffee. He leaned back and crossed his arms, “Did you like Stan? Did you think he was a good kid?”
“Yeah. I thought he was a good kid.”
“Well, um,” Diego hesitated, “You know he wasn’t mine, right?”
Y/n nodded, “Yes, I can read minds.”
“Have you read mine?”
“No,” She smiled, “I don’t, or I try not to.”
“Well,” Diego fidgeted, “Lila’s, um, she’s pregnant.”
“Yes, I know.”
Diego whipped his head up, “You said you didn’t read my mind.”
“I didn’t.” Y/n replied, “I read Lila’s when she dropped Stan off. She was using Stan as a test.”
“Why didn’t you say anything.”
“It isn’t my place.” She said, “However, I do think you’ll make an amazing father.”
Diego’s eyes softened, and Y/n sipped on the coffee again. He let out a sigh of relief, “I wanted to ask you something.”
“Shoot.”
“I want you to be the baby’s godmother.” Diego said, “And I think I want Klaus or Five to be the godfather. I haven’t decided yet.”
Y/n placed her mug on the table. Her jaw dropped, “Diego, are you- are you sure about this?”
“Very.” He assured, “Especially about you being the godmother. I’m sure Lila would agree with no qualms. You’re the only reasonable guardian for the job. Even if Allison wasn’t going wacko, she and I have never been close. You are my little sister and have been since we were kids.”
She placed a hand on Diego’s, “Then I’d be honored to be your baby’s godmother.”
Before Diego could speak, there was loud yelling. Y/n jumped up and walked out into the foyer. She saw Five and Viktor standing across from them. In the living room, there was a large yellow-orange sphere consuming everything. Viktor yelled, “We gotta get out!”
“Wait.” Five shouted, “Ben!”
Y/n watched Five disappear with a wisp. She ran to the doors and flew them open. Diego and Viktor weren’t far behind her. She sprinted in the direction of the hotel. It was blocks away. Diego and Viktor followed closely behind. She felt the concrete rumble beneath her feet. Y/n panted and continued moving until fifteen minutes later. She saw the hotel. Y/n flung herself into the revolving door.
She put her hands on her knees and panted. Diego and Viktor panted. Y/n saw everyone else in the upper part of the lobby. She climbed the stairs and collapsed next to Five. He leaned on the railing, and Y/n put her back against it. She panted, and sweat was dripping from her face. Diego leaned on another railing. Viktor collapsed on a yellow cushioned chair.
Y/n wiped the sweat from her forehead. She stood up and walked over to Viktor’s armchair. She sat in front of it, and Viktor smiled. Luther and Sloane were cozy on the yellow couch. Lila had her legs over the opposite armchair. Diego was behind Y/n, leaning on the railing. Allison leaned on a blue pillar a yard away. Ben was leaning on the opposite guardrail. Five looked over the lobby.
“So, how are we still here, but the whole universe is going down the cosmic shitter?” Allison asked.
Viktor shrugged, “Maybe we're the last to get flushed.”
“Wasn't talking to you.”
Y/n narrowed her eyes. Luther looked around, “Hey, has anyone seen Klaus?”
“Or Dad?”
“They'll be here.”
“Really? Did they… hit traffic?” Ben retorted, “Look, people, we're alive because we're special, right? We're the only ones who can save the universe.”
Allison raised her index finger, “Uh, question.”
“Yes.”
“Didn't we just try that and fail miserably?”
“Yeah, it's because his plan was stupid.” Diego said, “I got a better one.”
Ben rolled his eyes, “'Course you do.”
“We go with the large hard-on particle accelerator. You guys do some science, and…” Diego clicked his tongue, “We launch the Kugelblitz into outer space. Didn't think I knew that, did ya? It's in Switzerland.”
“It's ‘hadron,’ not ‘hard-on,’ ya moron!”
Y/n sighed. Lila sat up, “Oi! At least he's trying, you shitty little squid. What have you contributed?”
“Actually, he did blow up half his family.”
“Oh, you wanna talk about family problems?”
“You know what should have blown up is your face on that neck!”
“I wish I had a cake to hit you with in your face!”
Y/n blew a raspberry as they both started talking in different languages over each other in their faces. Diego was speaking fluent Spanish. She couldn’t tell what Ben was speaking. She only understood what Diego was saying. Y/n and Diego spoke in Spanish frequently when they were kids. She smiled at the memory.
“Hey!” Five yelled, “You guys done?”
They both went quiet, “The universe is disappearing outside. So you can keep rearranging the deck chairs of the Titanic if it makes you feel better.  But the fact remains that we are too late.”
Diego and Ben scoffed. Y/n tilted her head at him. Luther looked baffled, “Five, come on.”
“It's over, Luther.” Five said, “We failed.”
“Come on. It can't be over over.”
“Yeah, come on, Five.” Diego replied, “We gotta figure this out, man.”
Five sighed, “Okay. How about we take a step back? Look at the big picture here. Most of us have spent the last 28 days trying to stop the world from ending. What exactly have we accomplished?”
“Well, we made some friends along the way.” Y/n snickered. Five rolled his eyes, “Incorrect!”
“You know what we've done?” Five asked, “Nothing. We made things worse every single time.”
“Amen to that.”
Five sighed, “Look, when I went to the Commission, I had a conversation with my 100-year-old self. And my last words were, ‘Don't save the world.’”
“‘Don't save the world’?”
“‘Don't save the world.’” Y/n saw tears in his eyes.
“That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.”
“Is it?” Luther asked, “Well, whatever we're doing's not working. All we ever do is save the world for a day, pat ourselves on the back, and everything goes to shit again.”
“Yeah, maybe we're the problem.”
Allison scoffed, “Oh, yeah. Us.”
“So, wait. Your big plan is no plan?”
“Exactly. Conscientious objection.” Five said, “Why the hell not? We've tried everything else.”
Y/n looked down at her lap. She felt wrong. She felt uneasy. Five sighed, “Look, maybe this is just what the universe needs. I say, embrace the apocalypse. See what's on the other side.”
“What if,” Y/n hesitated, “It’s nothing?”
“Then it's been nice knowing you all.” Five swallowed thickly, “Whatever's on your bucket list, I recommend you do that now.”
It went quiet. Y/n fidgeted in her lap. She heard someone rummaging through something until something hard hit her. Y/n turned to her left and saw plastic packaging. Inside was a Rubik cube. She looked up to see Diego giving her a soft smile. She ripped open the packaging and started to mess up the cube before solving it. It kept the tears at bay. It kept the sinking feeling distracted.
“Well,” Y/n perked up to see Luther and Sloane smiling, “On that… super happy note, we've, um…”
He laughed as they both stood up, “We've, uh, got a little announcement to make.”
“We're engaged!” Luther and Sloane said together.
His arm was around her shoulders. Her hand was over his right pectoral. Y/n felt her hands go ridged. She heard people around them sigh or let out tiny comments. She swallowed and looked down at the Rubik cube in her lap. She looked at the green cubes. She could hear a voice taunting her. Y/n snapped back up when a hand ruffled her hair. Diego was standing beside her.
“Yeah. Look, we realize the timing is less than ideal.” Luther continued, “But, obviously, it's now or never. Am I right, Five?”
“Don't drag me into this, please.”
“What- Whatever time we have left, we wanna spend it with all of you.” Sloane said, “So we're super pumped if you would join us in the banquet hall at 6:00 p.m. to celebrate our love and the official union of what's left of our two great families.”
“Dress code is creative black-tie.”
Y/n smiled, “Congrats. You, um, you deserve it.”
She watched his face contort into a softness she had never seen before. It felt like yesterday she was sitting in Diego’s room at the gym with Luther and Five. Y/n could hear his voice in her head like it was just hours ago, “Can you try to be nicer to me?” Luther hadn’t done amazing things, but Y/n wasn’t an angel either. His blue eyes glistened the slightest bit.
“Thank you, Y/n.”
Sloane reached on the side of the couch and pulled out a tiny bag. Inside the bag were little jars filled with almonds. They had silver tops and blue ribbon wrapped around the opening. On the pot, it said Luther and Sloane Hargreeves. She handed some to Luther and went around the room. Y/n looked up to see Sloane smiling and took one from her hand. They were neatly done.
Lila laughed, “Wow! And you did all of this yourself?”
“Luther helped too. We stayed up all night.” Sloane replied.
“Amazing.”
Y/n put them beside her and picked up the Rubik cube. Her hands fiddled with the cube, “Dad?”
Her head lurched forward to see Reginald and Klaus in the loft. Reginald looked the same. He had a suit on with his monocle and a hat. Klaus swayed with his usual grace. His hair was extremely curly. His shirt had dirt all over it and was open, exposing his stomach. He had black pants and the same shoes.
“Klaus.”
“Hey.”
“Oh, thank God.”
Reginald looked around, “Gather 'round, children. Quickly now!”
“The hell have you been?”
“Oh, Reg and I. We got tangled up in a whole father-son end-of-the-world road trip kinda thing.” Klaus replied, “You know?”
“You two are hanging now?”
“Yeah, we laughed, we cried, we played in traffic, and long story short, I'm immortal now.” Klaus started flexing dramatically.
Y/n tilted her head. Klaus’ mind was always easy to get into. She looked at Reginald. His eyes gleamed blue, and she tried to get into his head. She got nothing but static. Her heart pounded. Y/n thought about it. She had never been able to read Reginald’s mind. She pushed herself off the floor and sat beside Five on a chair. Y/n leaned into his ear.
“I can’t read his mind.”
“Maybe it’s just difficult-“
“No,” Y/n stopped. Five eyes widened, “I’ve always been able to get into people’s heads. Sometimes it’s difficult, but it’s like Reginald doesn’t have a mind for me to read.”
“We have to tell the others-“
Y/n shook her head, “No, they can’t know. But please be careful. Something is wrong. I can feel it. I’m warning you.”
“I trust you.”
Five held her right hand tight, “I think the more pertinent question is, why are you all playing with jars?”
“They're invitations.”
“Nobody's playing.”
Sloane handed Reginald a jar, “Luther and I are getting married.”
“All of space and time is collapsing, and you lot are planning a wedding?”
“Yeah, and, uh, the thing is, um,” Luther took the jar from Reginald’s hand, “Space is limited. So it's kind of a per-plate situation, so, you know.”
“Is this how I raised you? To fiddle while Rome burns?”
Klaus muttered something to him. Sloane had her hands on her hips, “Dad, have you been taking your pills?”
“Pills?”
Five shrugged. Y/n continued listening, “As a matter of fact, I haven't. And I can confirm that I've never felt better in my life. You thought you could dope me up and slow me down, take control of my affairs and squander my fortune. Well, Klaus here was good enough to wean me off that wretched poison.  And now that the fog is lifting, I can see all your dastardly designs with bracing clarity.”
“You took him off his meds?” Sloane sounded angry, “What were you thinking?”
“He's the only one doing any thinking.” Reginald replied, “All of you could learn a thing or two from this impressive young man.”
Diego laughed, “The world really is ending! Oh my God.”
“As for the rest of you, your training is to resume post-haste. We're running out of time. We have a mission to complete.”
“I'm ready.” Ben said, “Let's do this.”
“Let me guess.” Five smirked, “Project Oblivion?”
“How do you know about that?”
Y/n tucked her hair behind her ears, “You’re little furry friend, Pogo.”
“Now, there's a name I haven't heard in some time.”
“And he confirmed what we’ve always suspected about you.”
“Which is?”
“That you're a sadistic lunatic who's planning on gambling all of our lives in another pointless mission.”
“And you'd take the word of a disgruntled chimp over that of your father?”
Five let go of Y/n’s hand. She heard a wisp, and he was smiling brightly in Reginald’s face, “Every damn day.”
“Nobody wants you here, Dad.” Luther said, “You should leave.”
“Hey, you don't speak for all of us, big guy.”
Luther glared at Ben, “Feel free to join him.”
“I see. So this is what it's come to. Insurrection.” Klaus shushed him.
“That's not the kind of erection we're driving for here, all right? Everybody just needs to be cool.” Klaus said, “Clearly, you guys are on a different chakra frequency right now. Hey, Pops, let's have a nice cup of tea in the suite.”
Klaus grabbed Reginald’s arm and started pulling him out of the loft, “You guys are gorgeous. Amazing. Send me your registry!”
Five walked back over to Y/n. She saw his palm in front of her. She took it and started to walk downstairs when Luther stopped them, “Five, wait!”
They both stopped, “I’m having a bachelor party in fifteen minutes, and I want you to come.”
Five looked at Y/n, “I’m not your boss.”
“I’ll see you there.”
“You can come too, Y/n. If you want.”
She shook her head, “No, thank you. I need some time to think.”
“Okay.”
Y/n watched Luther walk off. She walked downstairs, and Five followed her. She walked to the bar and grabbed a mug. Behind the bar was a coffee pot still half full. She poured it into the blue cup and sat on a stool behind the bar. Five sat opposite of her. He was fidgeting with something in his blazer pocket. Y/n paid him no mind and sipped the coffee. The mug warmed her hands.
“What’s your theory?”
“On?”
“Reginald. You said you can’t read his mind.”
She placed the cup on the bar, “I don’t know. It worries me, but if you think about it, he’s never really aged. Maybe he’s some otherworldy creature?”
“That sounds insane.”
“Are you really saying that’s insane after what we’ve been through?”
Five chuckled, “Fair point.”
He kept fidgeting in his pocket. Y/n picked up her mug and took a sip, “What’re you fidgeting with?”
“Nothing,”
Y/n raised an eyebrow, “You don’t think I’m stupid, do you?”
“It’s something I found in the apocalypse. I’ve kept it with me ever since.”
“Like the prosthetic eye?”
“Yes,” Five replied, “But something more meaningful.”
“Okay.”
She continued to drink her coffee until Five looked at the clock. He leaned across the bar and kissed her forehead. He jumped off the stool and walked away. Y/n looked around and brewed more coffee into the coffee pot before sitting on the floor. She was taunted by the alcohol bottles gleaming in the bright fluorescent lights. She sighed and took another sip of coffee.
Something was eating at the back of her head. She looked back and realized. There had been one person she didn’t interact with. Y/n looked down at the coffee to see her reflection. Her hair was greasy and tangled in most spots. Her cheeks looked less complete, and she had a small scar above her top lip— a knife knick from Diego. Her eyes looked concerned and sad. Y/n tipped the rest of the coffee into her mouth before walking around the bar.
She walked to the entrance and took a deep breath. Y/n walked through the revolving doors to see Allison sitting on the sidewalk. Her knees bent and her feet on the road. Y/n approached her and sat on her right. She saw a cigarette hanging from her lips. Allison turned to see Y/n and smashed it on the ground with her foot.
“You’ve always hated cigarettes.”
“Yeah,” Y/n fidgeted with her hands, “I suppose I have.”
Allison turned, “Why?”
“Because they can kill you.”
“So can you.”
Y/n swallowed thickly, “I know, but I would never hurt you guys.”
“What happened to making me suffer, huh?”
“I’m sorry,” Y/n almost didn’t hear herself, “I didn’t mean it. It was harsh. I just wish you understood how much pain I went through in that basement.”
“Why are you saying all of this?” Allison asked, “You’ve never talked to any of us before, aside for Diego.”
She swallowed, and tears blurred her vision, “It’s like Five said, right? Bucketlist?”
Allison looked concerned, “I- I’m scared, and I don’t know what to do. I can’t save you guys this time. I wish I could take all your pain. I genuinely liked Ray. I thought he was an amazing man. I wish I got to meet Claire. I’m sure she was an extraordinary little girl.”
“I’m sorry too,” Allison said, “We never noticed that you were grieving when Five left. And I didn’t think you’d like Claire. I didn’t think you liked kids. But I saw you with Stan. He seemed to really like you. You’d make an amazing mother one day, Y/n.”
“I missed him. I missed him a lot.”
“We all did,” Allison put an arm around her, “I’m just sorry we never thought that you were hurting too.”
Y/n tried to swallow the tears back. It was hard. Her head pounded. Allison rubbed the toe of her shoe against the asphalt, “When you turned the barrel of the gun on Klaus that day, we all thought you were going to shoot him. We were terrified. I remember being scared of you. You aimed the gun at him without emotion, and if Luther hadn’t kicked the gun from your hand. You would’ve killed him.”
“And then you got sent away, and no one knew what to do. Missions got more challenging, but we were all relieved you were gone. You were always so unpredictable, and it scared us all except for Diego.”
A tear dripped from her eye, and she was quick to wipe it. She took deep breaths and waited through it put before speaking. Her heart pounded. Allison rubbed her thumb against her shoulder and waited. She was so patient, and Y/n couldn’t be more thankful for it. It took her three minutes to calm down before speaking again.
“I’m so sorry,” She apologized, “I never meant to scare you guys, and I’m trying to fix it now.”
“Better late than never?”
Y/n chuckled, “Yeah.”
“You know,” Allison drawled, “I wouldn’t mind your help getting ready for the wedding if you don’t mind.”
“Why the hell not.”
Allison smiled, “That’s the spirit.”
Y/n stood up and followed Allison back into the hotel. They heard the boys singing terribly and snickered together. Y/n let herself go for the first time in thirty years. It had been a long time since she let herself do things she wanted to do. Allison opened the elevator, and Y/n stepped in after her. It was a quiet ride up to the room. Allison unlocked room twenty, and it had the same setup inside. Except, there were two twin beds with a nightstand in the center. The old black duffle bag was on a coffee table.
Y/n plopped down on the bed on the right as Allison rummaged through the bag. She couldn’t remember what was inside. It had been days ago, and she had almost no light. Allison picked up two different dresses. One was a dark green velvet, and the second was a navy blue slim-fitting dress. Allison held them both up to her body, “Which one?”
“I think the green would match your complexion.”
Allison smiled, “Green it is.”
Y/n laid down and stared at the ceiling while Allison undressed. She heard buttons being undone and a zipper falling. Y/n heard the clothes hit the ground and a sliding noise. Allison huffed, “Can you zip me, please?”
She looked up and saw Allison holding her short hair out of the way. Y/n zipped up the dress, and Allison turned around. It showed a lot of her upper body and made her curves look beautiful. Y/n smiled, “You look beautiful.”
“Thank you,” Allison replied, “What will you wear?”
“Me?” Y/n chuckled lightly, “Uh, this?”
Allison gave her a look. Y/n smiled sheepishly. She sighed and walked out of the room. Y/n followed her to the elevator, where everyone was waiting aside for Viktor, Luther, and Sloane. Allison walked in first, and Y/n entered next. Lila was wearing a black sparkly dress. Klaus had a velvet emerald suit on. Ben had a flashy gold and black suit. Diego had a decorated button-up and black pants. Five had on his suit. He took her hand as the elevator opened.
The banquet hall was beautiful. It had white tables and blue lights sprawled all over the building. Klaus had wide eyes, “Not sure this place is gonna be big enough.”
“This better be an open bar.”
“Hey, come on.” Lila retorted, “It's for Luther. Let's perk up.”
“Wow.” Lila chuckled.
Y/n squeezed Five’s hand, and he pressed back. She could feel everything in her pockets. Mementos of each timeline. The knife from Diego in Dallas, the wallet from Dallas, and the first aid kit for Stan. She could feel Five’s hand in hers. He was from the first timeline. He was her walking remembrance of where she had come from and everything she worked hard to achieve. The elevator dinged again. Luther and Viktor were bickering as they walked out. Allison looked Viktor up and down.
“Ah, I see you've gone for the oversized button-down. Original.”
“You do realize there's no paparazzi here, right?”
She tuned them out and leaned closer to Five. He took his hand from hers to put it around her waist. She laid her heart over his soothing heartbeat. He rubbed her side with his hand, “You okay?”
“Scared.”
Five kissed her right temple, “Everything’s going to be okay. For now, let’s enjoy this, okay?”
“Yeah.”
The elevator dinged again, and Y/n saw Sloane. Her hair was brushed and smooth. She held a bouquet of white flowers. The dress was slim fitting and hugged her curves perfectly. Y/n looked over at Luther. He was utterly starstruck. Y/n heard Lila gasp, “Wow.”
“Let's get this over with before I die of cringe.” Y/n glared at Ben.
They walked outside to a balcony. It was arranged with chairs and a small altar. The altar was covered in red flowers with olive green leaves. Y/n and Five took a seat in the back on the right side. She sat on the inside. Five placed his left ankle on his knee. Y/n leaned on his shoulder, and he wrapped his right arm around her. He pressed a kiss in her hair. Luther and Sloane stood at the altar. Klaus stood behind them. Lila was behind Sloane, and Viktor was behind Luther.
“Dearly beloved, we're gathered here today for a good time, not a long time, so let's have a good time, huh?” Klaus said, “'Cause the sun can't shine every day. Can I get an amen?”
“Amen!”
“Amen!”
Diego whistled. Five squeezed Y/n’s shoulder, “Amen.”
“Luther, do you be taking this banging hottie to be your lady?”
“I do.”
Klaus sighed dreamily, “Sloane, do you promise to love and cherish this big hairy bastard for the next 24 to 48 hours?”
“Give or take a day.”
Y/n smacked his thigh, “Hargreeves!”
He rolled his eyes. Sloane smiled, “I'm gonna try.”
“Well, then…” Klaus had tears in his eyes, “I'm sorry. I pronounce you married as shit!”
“Viva la apocalypse!”
Sloane and Luther kissed. Luther picked her feet off the ground. Diego and Lila cheered loudly. Klaus was crying and clapping. Viktor was clapping. Y/n smiled and nuzzled closer into Five. Luther and Sloane walked back into the banquet hall together. Diego, Lila, Viktor, and Allison followed. Y/n and Five stayed together, sitting at the altar. They stared at the stars for a while.
“You ready to go inside?”
“Yeah.”
He stood up, and Y/n followed him inside. He interlaced their hands together. On the floor, Luther and Sloane were slow dancing together. Five had grabbed a champagne glass and sipped it as they caught up with the others. Klaus and Allison were arm and arm. Diego and Lila were holding hands. Ben stood far from Klaus and Allison. Viktor stood near Diego and Lila.
Five stared, “This is officially worse than the apocalypse.”
“Five,” Y/n scolded, “Weren’t you the one who said, let’s enjoy this to me earlier?”
“Yes, let’s enjoy it intoxicated.”
Y/n snorted as he pulled her toward the champagne on the buffet table. He filled up his glass and refilled Y/n’s. Allison walked over to grab another drink. Five was grabbing food and putting it on a plate. Allison watched the bubbles in her glass, “You two are actually quite cute.”
“Thank you?”
Allison smiled, “It’s a compliment.”
Y/n nodded. Allison walked away and patted Y/n on the head. She sighed and followed Five to a table. Diego and Lila were dancing on the floor. Klaus danced alone, and Y/n smiled. Five sipped his drink, and she sighed. Y/n got up from the table and held out a hand, “Before you’re too intoxicated to dance with me?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Please,” Y/n said, “We haven’t danced since twenty-nineteen. It’s been so long.”
Five shook his head, “No, I’m not doing it.”
“It would make my night,” She said, “Before everything goes to hell before we no longer exist, I just want one dance with you. One where we aren’t obligated to hold each other or step on each other’s feet on purpose.”
“You are infuriating.”
“Have you met yourself?”
Five took her hand. Y/n smiled and led him to the dance floor. Her shoes clicked on the white tile floor. Five placed his right hand on her waist and took her other hand in his left. She put her left hand on his shoulder. He swayed her in a circle. Y/n put her head on his chest, and he put both hands on her waist. She put her other hand on his shoulder.
For Five, it had only been about two weeks since they’d danced in her bedroom. For her, it had been almost three months. He could feel the weight of them in his pocket. They had been burning a hole in it since he returned from the apocalypse and found that note. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t.
Five wouldn’t take this day from Luther. It was his day, not Five’s. But it was so hard to hold back when she listened to his heartbeat and fiddled with the hairs on the back of his neck as they swayed. He would spend lifetimes making her smile, laugh, and happy. But he didn’t have lifetimes. He had a day, maybe hours. So if she wanted to dance, he’d dance with her forever.
He’d spend what time he had left loving her.

Zephyr: Umbrella Academy x Child! Sister! Reader
Y/N
Hi! I'm Y/N Hargreeves! And I have 6 awesome siblings! There's Luther, my oldest bro, there's Allison my big sister, there's Klaus, who is the funniest, there's Five, my apparently 53 year old brother, there's Viktor, and then there's Diego.
After my dad died, me and my siblings got chased by these two doggy people with guns and these men with weird gas masks.
We had went to the bowling alley to hide from the scary men. Luther had gotten me pizza while they were planning something.
And suddenly I felt a pain in my chest.
Diego
"NO! NO! NO!" I ran to my little sisters side and quickly tied up her chest with a handkerchief. Five and Luther were fighting the men while I asked Allison to cover me.
"It hurts Diego, it hurts...but can you please see the sunrise....for me?" Was her last words. The last words of a person that died too young.
We had to leave her body though. She was too much of a burden to carry.
When I told my siblings she had died, some of them cried, some of them, including Five, were holding back their tears.
Y/N
I slowly opened my eyes. I saw my dead brother Ben. "Am I....dead? He nodded his head. I quickly ran into his arms and gave him a hug.
"Hi, Y/N, it's nice to see you." He whispered. I felt a chill of comfort run down my spine. That's what my brother Ben does you know? Makes you feel comfortable anywhere, even in ghost form.
Diego
We found a safe spot to hide for the night. When it was almost sunrise, I sat next to the window and said; "It's beautiful isn't it, Y/N?"
Y/N
Although my brother didn't know it. I was watching the sunrise with him.
"It is beautiful Diego."

Chapter 4: Discussions and Distractions
Y/N and Luther get back to the academy. She lets out a long sigh as she rolls her shoulders and lets the Wisp form behind her. Luther had gotten so used to her doing that, that he didn’t usually bat an eye, but this time he takes a second to study the hue and intensity of the glowing form. After everything, they had talked about, and the fact they probably talked more now than they had since they were really little, he really looked at both her forms. How could she stand constantly having dueling perspectives? The more he tried to think about it, the more it seemed nauseating. Like, split-screen video games or picture-in-picture but 24/7 and beyond just audio-visual. They’ve been together their whole lives, and he is just really putting it into perspective now. He clearly sucks at being the sympathetic brother. He looks away from her glowing form and to her actual human one. She looked weary, almost drained. He wonders how much it takes out of her to have this extra entity that is constantly battling for space. It might not be a mental thing, but it clearly took a toll. Would she even tell him if she needed a break or help? Would any of them? He guessed that was kind of the situation they were all navigating now. Learning to work together again. And all it took was someone killing their dad. Maybe he was thinking too much about this.
"What?" She asks when her much larger brother just keeps staring at her.
"Don't take this the wrong way, but-"
"I know," she says knowingly. "I need to get more sleep.” She huffs a sort of tired laugh and smiles. “Wisp is more of a ragged refulgence right now."
Luther wasn’t about to admit he wasn’t actually sure what that meant. Ragged, made sense. That one he got. Refulgence? Well, that one he would have to look up. Why did his sisters have to genuinely be so much smarter than he was? But he ignored it. It wasn’t meant as a dig against his intelligence or anything like that. That she usually reserved for Diego. He knows her tone made it clear it was supposed to be, at least partially, a joke.
"Yeah," he nods.
She gives him an amused look as he seemed to be in his head again. “Remember to get some sleep yourself, Luther.” With that, she goes off to her room. He goes to find Allison.
Y/N wakes up to Pogo telling her she had a call. She isn’t too surprised to find her boss on the line. She had given him the number as an emergency contact. She had not really expected him to use it, but then again, the guy wasn’t great on boundaries at times. For what feels like hours but is probably just a few annoying minutes, they argue about her next shift. She tells him how her family needs her and that she can’t come back yet. She can’t tell him the details. She can’t even guarantee a timeline. Eventually, her boss agrees to give her a few more days unpaid. To which she begrudgingly agrees.
Grumbling, she goes to get something to eat. Her annoyance is clear in the slight red tint to her fluorescent facsimile.
"Whoa, looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," Klaus says. She glances up at the Wisp but shrugs.
"My boss called."
"Fun, clearly went well," Klaus gestures to the aggravated aura.
"He is not happy about having to find someone to cover my shifts. But he did give me more time off, unpaid time off, but that's not a surprise."
"Why do you still work there if your boss sucks?"
"Because I have rent to pay," she says. "And I was lucky to find that job. Not a lot of people want to hire someone like me."
"That is their loss. You're great. A literal ray of sunshine."
"I love you, Klaus, but I think you're a bit biased."
"There you are," She smiles as she sees Five. "If I didn't know better, I would think you were avoiding me."
"You?" Five says. “Nah.”
"I've seen Luther and Diego more than you, and that's saying something."
"That's because I trust you,” he insists, “I know you can do what I asked you to without me hovering. Hovering is more your thing." He gestures to the Wisp.
"I appreciate that, but I still miss you."
Five smiles sadly. "I miss you too, but once I sort out what I need to, then we'll have all the time we need for you to get sick of having me around like you do, Klaus."
“You sure you have that much time?” She grins.
“For you?” He pretends to need to mull it over, but he knew the answer. He had genuinely missed her. He’d missed them all, but she had always been up to any challenge he gave her. She never used to back down. She may have lost some of her edge and her warm light, but she was still his sister. “Sure.”
She studies him. "Are you okay?"
"I promise you, Y/N/N, I am not the one you need to worry about."
She narrows her gaze at him. "See, that just makes me worry more."
He chuckles. "I know, but I trust you to do what needs to be done."
"But what is your end goal, Five? I can't help you much if you don't tell me."
"I'm handling it," he insists.
"But-"
He squeezes her shoulder. “Just keep working on getting everyone on the same page."
She snorts a laugh. "I'm not even sure they're all using the same book, let alone page."
"You, Diego, and Luther were all in the same room and walked away agreeing on something last night, right?" She nods. "Then you are already doing better than I expected."
Grace approaches them.
"There you are, Y/N," she smiles, "you have a call."
"I'll fill you in later, okay?" Five assures her.
"Okay," she nods before going to get the phone. She was only partially surprised to find out it was her neighbor, Joan. Someone else she had given the number to for emergencies.
"Hey Joan, I'm sorry I didn't let you know but my trip home is taking a bit longer than I expected." She informs her only friendly neighbor. "Oh, I told Allison you were a fan…"
"There you are. I think we found something about Dad." Luther pulls Y/N to the side.
She is instant to inquire, "What did you find?"
“Pogo gave Allison the key to the surveillance videos. Dad had been using them again. Getting paranoid, I guess.”
“So you have video from the day he died?”
“Exact moment and before it.”
“So?” she prompts him to continue when he doesn’t elaborate.
“Grace gave him a cup of tea, and then he died.”
“So you think she did it?” She finds that hard to believe. She was their mom. She helped raise them when Reginald Hargreeves couldn’t be bothered to.
“You can see for yourself once the others get here.” They stand in silence for a moment while she really thinks about it. What would have been Grace’s motive? Why was he telling her now if they were going to show everyone later? Unless…
"Please tell me you don't think what I think you're thinking, Luther."
"I'm just telling you what we found. Figured you would want a heads up, going to have a family meeting."
"Luther," she starts.
"I'm not saying it was him, just you know how he is with Grace," Luther says.
"He would never ask her to do anything like that, never put her in a position like that. I don’t even know if that would be possible. He…no, there has to be something else going on."
"Just don't miss the meeting," Luther says.
Before Y/N turns the corner she hears Diego in Grace’s sitting area. She thought about her conversation with Luther.
“Mom, we need to talk.”
“Okay,” Grace agrees, “but only for a minute. I need to finish this cross-stitch.”
“Everything you did for us when we were kids... for me... why'd you do it?”
“Because being your mother is the greatest gift of my life.”
“Is that you saying that?”
“I'm not sure what you mean, Diego.”
“I mean, our father, he... made you.”
“When you think something, is it like he's telling you what to say?”
“Your father isn't here, silly. Did I do something wrong?”
“No, it's... it's not... Look. It's okay... if you hated him. He was terrible to you, to all of us.”
“Don't say that.”
“Why not? We were just tools in an experiment to him. Nothing more. So I'm saying, I would understand if... you know, if... if you wanted to hurt him.”
“Now, now. Mr. Hargreeves was a great man. Industrialist, inventor, Olympic gold medalist. He made the world a better place.”
“Stop it! Do you hear me? Stop trying to defend him! Mom, you gotta feel something. Look, he treated you worse than anyone. You worked for him for 30 years. He didn't even give you a room to sleep in.”
“But I've got such beautiful views here.”
“Mom, those are just paintings.”
“Of course they are. What a wonderful world she lives in. Sometimes I wonder if she is lonely.”
Y/N can almost sense Diego’s frustration from where she is, but she doesn’t say anything. She just continues on her way.
The Wisp hovers a few feet behind them all, just high enough not to heat any surfaces. But very little of Y/N’s focus is on the scintillate secondary entity. It was back to its usual melancholy tone. Her focus is on her siblings as they all gather.
“I mean, do you really think Mom would hurt Dad?” Vanya asks.
“You haven't been home in a long time, Vanya.”
“Maybe you don't know Grace anymore.”
“Not sure that’s fair,” Y/n mutters. “Most of us have been gone.”
“If he was poisoned, it would have shown in the coroner's report.”
“Well, I don't need a report to tell me what I can see with my own eyes.”
“Guys…” she starts.
“Look closer.”
“Dad has his monocle.” Diego narrates. “Mom stands up. Monocle's gone.”
“Oh, yeah!” Klaus agrees with a chuckle.
“She wasn't poisoning him. She was... taking it.”
“To clean it.”
Luther isn't convinced. “Then where is it? No, I've searched the house, including all her things. She doesn't have it.”
“That's because I took it from her,” Diego admits. “After the funeral.”
The Wisp flashes a vivid shade of vermillion for a moment before it settles back to its usual melancholy blue. An action that earns her a few winces and nervous looks, but no one mentions it. They instead choose to focus on Diego.
“You've had the monocle this whole time? What the hell, Diego?”
“Give it to me.”
“I threw it away.”
“You what?”
“You’re a dumbass,” Y/N grumbles as she rubs at her temples. The glimmer of the Wisp changes slightly as she does, intensity ebbing and flowing with the pressure on her temples. Like angry waves on a stormy coast. She misses the glare Diego sends both of her forms.
“Look, I knew that if you found it on Mom, you'd lose your shit,” Diego explains. “Just like you're doing right now.”
Y/N shook her head. This meeting was going nowhere fast. She shifted her attention to the Wisp and decided to search for Five. She barely registers the continuing conversation, giving it just enough attention that she couldn't be accused of ignoring it all.
“Diego, you son of a bitch.”
“Hey, no,” Vanya tries, “Calm down. Look, I know Dad wasn't exactly an open book. But I do remember one thing he said. Mom was, well, designed to be a caretaker, but...also as a protector.”
“What does that mean?”
Vanya explains, “She was programmed to intervene if someone's life was in jeopardy.”
“Well, if her hardware is degrading, then…We need to turn her off,” Luther states.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait,” Diego starts. “She's not just a vacuum cleaner you can throw in a closet. She feels things. I've seen it!”
“She just stood there, Diego, and watched our father die.”
“I'm with Luther,” Allison tells them.
“Surprise, surprise.” Diego snarks.
“Shut up,” Allison glares.
They look at Vanya. “I... I don't…”
“Yeah,” Diego doesn’t let her finish. “She shouldn't get a vote.”
“Wh... “ Luther starts.
“I was gonna say that I agree with you,” Vanya points out.
“Okay,” Diego accepts, “She should get a vote.”
“What about you, stoner boy? What do you got?” They look to Klaus.
“Oh, so, what? You need my help now? Oh, 'Get out of the van, Klaus!' 'Well, welcome back to the van'."
“What van?”
“What's it gonna be, Klaus?” Luther asks.
“I'm with Diego, because screw you!” Klaus glares at Luther. “And if Ben were here, he'd agree with me.”
“So far, that's three to two.”
They look at Y/N, but she says nothing.
“Y/N?” Luther calls to her, and when she doesn’t respond, he asks, “Where’s the Wisp?”.
“What?” Allison looks around. “Not here.”
“You have got to be kidding me,” Diego seethes. He can see the faint blue glow under her eyelids.
“Hey!” Allison shouts as Diego grips their sister’s shoulder and violently shakes it. He fails to duck out of the way when a fist hits his chest, landing him on the floor.
“Asshole,” Y/N mutters as she gets up, flexing her fingers as she does.
“Were you listening?” Luther asks.
Y/N glares at him. “You doubting me too?”
She steals Klaus’ booze and takes a swig, earning a laugh from her usually inebriated brother. “Easy, Sunshine,” Klaus says with a grin. “Where’ve you been?”
“Looking for Five,” she pats his cheek as she answers. “So we can end this pointless discussion.”
“Successful mission or no?” Klaus asks with a tilt of his head as she takes another drink before handing it back to him.
“Sadly, I was rudely interrupted.” She glares at Diego.
“You are such a bitch,” Diego grits out from clenched teeth. She ignores him.
“But did you-” Luther starts on topic again.
“I heard you, Luther, unlike either of you fellas,” she gestures between Luther and Diego. “I can use both my brain cells.”
“You know what-” Diego starts at her, gesturing with his knife.
“No,” she begins with a sharp tone as four versions of the Wisp cage him in. He freezes. He can feel the intense heat surrounding him. “It’s my turn to vote.”
“Whoa,” Allison says in shock.
“Y/N,” Vanya moves towards her. “I don’t think that’s…”
“I’ve got this V,” Y/N slowly walks in a circle around Diego, just outside the Wisps’ blazing boundary, as it shifts, and he is enhaloed in a ring of light. It twists and coils around him. He feels like he’s surrounded by hellfire. “You want to know my vote, hmm? Fine,” the next part comes out almost saccharine sweet. “I heard your little chat with Mom. She didn’t even remember Reginald Hargreeves was dead at his memorial. She acts like he is just out of town. She has no clue what is happening. I think Mom needs a bit of a time-out or a nap. Isn’t that what she would have us do? Considering she is clearly so out of sorts.” It looked like Diego was going to take a swing at her despite the Wisps.
“That’s new,” Klaus states, somewhat in awe.
“When did she learn that?” Vanya inquires.
“Does it matter?” Allison asks. “She needs to stop!”
“Let him go, Y/N,” Luther says.
“Whatever you say, Number One,” she acquiesces and takes a few steps back before pulling back most of her powers between her open palm until it resembles a large orb she wills down in size. She keeps it there for a moment before letting it shift to its usual form and place behind her. Her everpresent coruscating companion.
Allison sighs at the dramatics. “Are you trying to burn the place down?”
“I know what I’m doing, Allison,” she replies.
“So it’s three to three,” Vanya says, trying to shift the focus back to the main topic before her sisters start to fight.
“Five will have to be the tiebreaker,” Luther admits.
“A vote we’d get done a lot faster if someone had let me finish my search,” Y/N complains.
“I’m sure he’ll be back soon,” Vanya says.
Y/N goes to leave without saying another word.
"Hey!" Diego snaps and follows her. “What the hell was that?!”
"Something I haven’t done in a very long time.”
“You had no-”
“No what, Diego? No right? That’s funny, because you can’t be serious. I have every right to be mad. Just like they do. You lied to them, to me. You hid this from them, from me! Let me guess, you don’t even think you did anything wrong, do you?”
“I was protecting, Grace,” Diego grits out.
“I defended you,” she pokes him in the chest. "You know that?”
"What?" He glares as he swats her hand away.
"At the gym, before you got there, even earlier today. I told Luther you didn't have anything to do with this. That it couldn’t be you. And yeah, you didn't kill him, but why hide it? Especially after he found out you were in the ring that night. I told him I trusted you, even if you hate me."
"Will you stop saying I hate you!" Diego shouts.
Her jaw dropped momentarily before closing with an audible click of her teeth, and her eyes flash red. But Diego continues his tone a touch less angry, "Does it frustrate the hell out of me when you don't listen, hell yes. Or how you never consider your own safety and choose to focus on everyone else's? Absolutely. Or when you push yourself so far past your limits you look like a shell of your usual self? Damn right it does. But I don't hate you. Never have. I hate that you won't let me explain or even help without you fighting me."
"That's rich coming from you,” she says with an eye roll. “How many times since we got here have you literally screamed you don't want my help."
"Really?” He crosses his arms. “We're going to do this now?"
"Yes, because you don't trust me."
"That's not true!"
"You don't even trust me to protect myself when I'm the Wisp. In the courtyard-"
"That is because I know you push yourself too hard when you're in a fight. You always do. And you are out of practice. And sure, in that meeting, you came out swinging, but in the courtyard? Your focus was on Five's portal, on looking after us, and you didn't even react when I touched you. Not a flinch, not a move to block. Nothing. That’s why I shook you so hard this time. Before, you were leaving just enough in your actual body to keep breathing. What was I supposed to do?"
"I knew you all wouldn't do anything that put me in danger. I knew you wouldn't hurt me,” she tells him. “No matter how much you-"
"I swear if the next words out of your mouth are that I hate you, I might-" He points his finger at  her. And it’s like the anger bleeds out of her. Exhaustion creeping in from manifesting first multiple full-formed Wisps, but then the halo ring for the first time in years. She sways on her feet slightly. On instinct, Diego reaches out to steady her, one hand on her shoulder.
"Point taken, Okay?” She nods. ”Next fight, I'll focus differently."
"Need a hand-to-hand combat refresher, you know where to find me, but it's not just that, okay? If you're going to use your little lights to follow us again, don't scramble your brain too much. I know you're going to keep doing it, just don't push it."
"You've been talking to Luther, haven't you?"
"That too, but the others might not notice when you follow them around with your little lights, but I do. And yeah, you both straight-up confirmed that. I'm shocked you didn't see me toss the monocle. I went to the donut shop crime scene right after. Part of why I was shocked you were defending me."
She punched his shoulder. "Then why didn't you tell me?"
"You were too busy lecturing me to get a word on."
"You're such a jerk."
"Just to you, Luz."
"That's a new one," she grinned.
"Well, if we're supposed to get along, I can't very well call you Bruja anymore."
When she hears the start of a scuffle, Y/N splits into the Wisp and is in the thick of it before she even knows what is really happening. Bullets flying has her transferring enough of her mind back for her body to hit the floor before putting most of her focus back into her illuminated form. Moving to immediately back Diego up and trying to draw as much of the focus on the Wisp as possible. Shoot at her in that form all they want, even if they could. The main issue was these opponents seemed smart enough not to fall for her usual tricks. Especially when she realizes that Klaus and Vanya could be caught in the middle of it all. So she resorted to some older tactics, some of the first ones she learned. Klaus had always called it the flash and crash. Use the Wisp to blind one of the attackers and tackle them from behind. She gave her brother just enough warning to shield his eyes before the Wisp turned blindingly bright, and she went for the masked assailant's knees and panting a superheated fist against the masked face. Earning a litany of curses from Diego as she did. But he was right back at it, using his powers to keep his sister out of his blade's path as he did. He fought back the instinct to put himself between her and the fight but could tell she had actually listened to his earlier advice. Flames in her eyes matched the smoke coming off almost any hit she landed. Even singed the wall when she pushed off in an attempt to get a better angle to attempt to take out the gun. But that earned her a shout from Diego when the barrel of it trained a little too close to her torso for his liking, and a bullet nicked her arm as she dodged. A grunt of pain and shock has her pulling back and ducking into a doorway. She hears her name called before an angry noise from Diego. He was beyond done by that point. Throwing blade after blade to distract and hopefully overwhelm the gunman. He missed the way Y/N tore at the fabric of her sleeve, the fabric burning ever so slightly as she did. She let the Wisp take form and allowed her to split her attention to making sure nothing worse came her way while she dealt with the injury. Most of her heat faded as she wrapped the fabric around the wound and secured it enough before pulling her powers back to her and getting back into the fight. Diego and the fight were no longer right outside the door by the time she was sure the makeshift bandage was secure, and she was ready to get back out there. She goes looking for the fight but finds Vanya hiding in the process. Vanya pulls away as violently as Y/N stops in front of her. “Shit, V,” Y/N says, willing the heat out of her left hand, so she can get a better look at her sister's injury. “You're okay, V. I've got you. If you want I can-”
“Do it,” Vanya nods, wanting to prove that she can handle this stuff.
“Okay, but this is going to hurt like a bitch, and it only works on surface injuries. You sure?"
"Yeah, we're wasting time," Vanya says.
"Okay, V, brace yourself.” Vanya bites down on her sleeve as her sister superheats a fingertip and, as fast as humanly possible, closes the small wound on her sister’s head.
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry,” Y/N repeats before letting the Wisp take all her heat with her into its form. “Let me check.” She brushes Vanya’s hair out of the way and nods. Letting her hand rest against Vanya’s forehead to help calm her ever so slightly. “We should-” They both startle at the sound of the chandelier crashing and running toward the foyer. They are both momentarily stunned when they see Luther before he runs off. Allison goes over to Vanya, and Diego pulls Y/N aside.
"Let me see," Diego insists, quickly using one of his knives to remove the bloody fabric from her wound as soon as the shock of Luther's reveal wore off.
"It's a bad scratch," she tries to downplay the fact she barely missed getting shot in the side. She pulls away. "I can take care of it."
"It's a gunshot wound," he corrected.
"Wait, what?" Vanya says, coming over to look at her sister's arm. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
"I'm fine," Y/N assures them as Allison joins them. The sisters don't miss the grumbled curses from Diego before he storms off. "If I could, I'd have done the same thing I did to your head."
Allison looks at Vanya's injury and adds, “You should put some ice on that.”
Vanya nods, wincing slightly as she does but focuses back on Y/N. "But that doesn't work on skin that's used to being superheated, does it?”
"Nope," Y/N replies before hissing in pain as Vanya carefully wipes away some of the ash from the burned sleeve to keep it from getting into the open wound.
"Sorry," Vanya winces.
"It's okay, V at least I could help you, although it probably hurt more helping than if I had left it. If I had known the fight would be over that quick, I’d have-"
“Diego?” Allison asks when he returns, and he is still furious. He tosses a first aid kit onto the table toward his sisters.
“What are you still doing here?” He says to Vanya.
“I'm just trying to help,” Vanya admits, reaching for the kit to attempt to help the sister that had helped her.
Y/N recognizes the look Diego has. “Please, Diego,” she cautions him.
He ignores her and continues to focus on Vanya. “No, you could've been killed. Or gotten any of us killed. She is a liability.” He looks between his sisters that do have powers.
Vanya looks at Allison. “Allison?”
“I think what he's trying to say is that this kind of stuff is dangerous,” Allison says. “You're just…”
“Not like you,” Vanya finishes for her. She sets the first aid kit back down.
“V, it's…” Y/N tries to say something at the same time Allison says. “No, that's not what I... Vanya, wait.” But Vanya is already leaving.
“Let her go,” Diego tells them. “It's for the best.”
“Says who?! You?!” Y/N snaps. "I miss the meeting where you became Number One or something?"
“You know I’m right,” Diego attempts to not lose it. He knew she and Vanya were closer than he was with either of them. He also knew she was exhausted before getting shot. So he tried to keep his wits about it.
“She’s injured, Diego! And you just drove her away! What if she-”
“You’re injured too, and unlike her, you still have an open wound.” He retorts.
“She needs our help!”
"She’ll survive. She is safer as far away from all this as can be. And you!” Diego finally shouts. What happened to your two brain cells huh? You still using them," he turns on Y/N. "When I told you to be more aware of your actual body in a fight I did not mean for you to just throw yourself at a gun!"
"I am just as trained in this as you are. I had it covered."
"You got shot!"
"Would you prefer I left my physical self unattended while those assholes shot through the walls?"
"No!"
"Then pick a fucking lane, Diego! You can't have it both ways! And I sure as hell am not backing out of a full-on assault of my own home just because you want me to! So quit yelling at me!"
She rubbed at her temples as the last bit of adrenaline seemed to fade from her system. She stormed off, taking the first aid kit with her so she could patch up her arm.
Y/N isn’t sure how long she sits in her room. Too exhausted to keep track but too on edge to actually sleep. She wasn’t sure what to do. Her head hangs low as she sits on her bed and leans against the wall. She looks up when through the Wisp that hovers near the center of the room, she sees shadows move outside her door. She sighs as she hears a knock on her doorframe. “It’s open,” she greets.
The door opens, and Luther asks, "How's the arm?"
"I've had worse," she assures him. He gives her a skeptical look. "We dealt with enough dicey shit as kids that we both know this is nothing."
"Didn't seem like nothing to Diego from what I hear," he counters.
"Diego was acting like I took a fatal hit," she grumbled. "Though I'm not the one that took a whole ass chandelier." She narrows her gaze at him. "Are you okay?"
"Barely a scratch," he deflects.
"Luther, I'm not going to push, and you don't have to tell me anything, but…" she saw him physically flinch like she burned him as she spoke. "Is this…is this why you were worried about me checking in on you with my powers?"
"A bit," he admits.
"Because you know I don't care, right? Like, I know what it's like to be the one that gets stared at and whispered about for being…well, a freak. Not that I think you're a freak. I know that you guys think the Wisp is freaky. I know you guys think it's even more unnatural than most of your guys' powers. Ben always got that. Polar opposites powers wise, and he at least could hide his but-"
"You're not a freak,” Luther says, rather bluntly, “Okay?"
She rolled her eyes at that.
"No more than the rest of us ever were,” he adds. “Or at least when we were kids. This is not coming off right," he groans and moves to stand beside the glowing form and gestures to it. "This was never a bad thing, especially not when we were little. You literally lit up a room when you walked in. Always warm, and so…" he frowned at the way her shoulders seemed to shift, and it was like he was watching her close herself off. He groaned again and moved to sit somewhat carefully next to her on the bed. "No one came back from losing Ben, well, you know that, right? You are just the one that has a big flashing, what you call, a neon sign, of what's going on in your heart. It's like a mood ring on steroids. You get mad and glow red. And so bright it's like staring at the sun and standing too close to a forest fire. It's just tough sometimes because it's always blue nowadays. And we know there's nothing we can do to change that. Nothing I can do. I can't bring Ben back. I can't take away the pain of the shit dad put you through. And I can't make Diego less of an asshole." That earned him a laugh and made him grin. "So yeah, it isn't always easy to know there isn't anything I can do. We aren't kids that can just pull pranks or make stupid jokes to make ourselves feel better anymore. But the Wisp doesn't make you any different, any freakier than we were when we were kids. And as you keep pointing out, you're still my sister. Still the same person that refused to listen to half my orders if you think someone needs you."
"Exactly, you're still my brother. You're just even more so my big brother." She grinned. “Really big, big brother.”
"We're the same age, Y/N," he deadpans.
"Sure, Number One," she shook her head.
“Fine, then as your big, big brother, I say you get some sleep. You look like a strong breeze could take you out.”
“Wanna fight me on that?” She grinned.
“I would, but you’re injured, so I’ll take the L on that one,” he chuckles.
“Fine, I’m kicking you out,” she conceded. “But only because you asked so nicely.”
“Deal,” Luther stands and heads back to the door.
“Luther?” she calls before he closes her door.
“Yeah?”
“Glad you found your other brain cell. You were a badass from what I hear.”
He huffs a laugh. “Sleep, or you might lose yours.”

“What does the winner get?” TUA?
A/N: Set around the very beginning of S3.
Tumblr media
“What does the winner get?”
“A big slice of ha, ha, loser to shove in the other’s face.”
“Then consider yourself pied.”
Diego expertly balanced the hotel room’s landline on Luther’s chest. “Twenty,” he whispered victoriously.
Your mouth fell open and you shot your brother a look that most certainly disagreed with his words. “That is not twenty. Your last number was seventeen.”
“Deaf as well as a sore loser? Oh-ho, sis, you’ve got it good.” Diego grinned, the tip of his tongue sticking from between his teeth as he meticulously perched a coffee mug on Luther’s knee. “Twenty-one.”
Luther shifted slightly in his sleep, a graceful snort interrupting his snores. You and Diego held your breaths as a menu and a couple teabags fell to the floor. When he relaxed again with a smack of his lips, you picked up the menu and put it back on his ankle with a proud smile.
“Uh-huh, no, that doesn’t count. It dropped, hence a minus, not a plus.” Diego pointed a finger in your chest. “Don’t cheat.”
“Speak for yourself, knife-boy. You know, we started this as a team. Twenty-three.”
“Allison says our competitive natures clash. Thirty.”
“Swindler!” Your harsh whisper almost roused Luther again, as well as Five and Klaus, who were sharing a bunk bed on the other side of the room. Luther was stretched across a cot that just about fit his sasquatch-ness, and Diego had resorted to a couch opposite. You had set up camp with Vanya and Allison in the second room you’d rented, but the latter was currently on a plane back home to see her daughter and the former had gone on a wander around the massive hotel. You hadn’t wanted to be alone, so you’d joined the boys in their room, and after a barrage of emotion hindering your sleep schedule, Diego had pulled you into a game that consisted solely of seeing who could balance the most random objects on your sleeping brother.
As to be expected, considering your current argument, neither of you were quite sure who was winning. What you were extremely certain of, was that propping a glass of water—Diego’s pride had blown the roof on that one—on the sleeping giant’s stomach had been a stupid idea.
Diego caught the twitch of Luther’s nostril just as the man sneezed. Of course, everything on him went flying, but it was the water that woke him up in a panicky mess, way too sleep-hazed to notice you and Diego as you made a break for the couch.
“Shi—shit,” Luther breathed out, arms raised above him as he attempted to figure out why he was wet and surrounded in hotel object carnage. You and Diego had successfully hidden your guilt, Diego lying straight and stiff on the couch while you substituted the lack of space for his chest. You lay half on him and half hanging off the edge of the couch, your eyes squeezed shut in attempt to maintain your sleepy innocence.
“Did I...piss myself?” Luther’s bleary words pierced the quietude of the room and Diego had to hide his snort. You jolted slightly as his chest heaved with suppressed laughter.
“The fuck’s the noise?” Each letter enunciated by Five was strung together in a slow, sleep-deprived sentence as he sat up in the top bunk and glanced around, the exact image of a small kid. Klaus suddenly groaned in his sleep, grabbing a pillow and slamming it against his face.
“Go’way,” he mumbled. “Fi’mo’mins, Mom...”
“Uh...” Luther, who seemed far more awake now, frowned deeply, took one more look at the littered floor, and wisely deduced that he was dreaming. “Nothing,” he said, lying back down. “Man, I gotta stop drinking a litre before bed. These nightmares are getting wild.”
You decided then that if anything world-ending were to happen while your brothers were sleeping, you would all be well and truly dead.
You and Diego waited a good minute after Luther’s closing statement before letting loose the few laughs you’d been unable to swallow down.
“He’ll be so confused when he wakes with wet pants,” you whispered, lifting your head up to grin at Diego.
“Nothing he ain’t used to,” Diego assured you, which made you grimace. With a light chuckle, he lifted an arm above his head. “You,” he said as he used a finger to gently rub at the corner of your eye, “are running on empty, huh?”
You shrugged, barely cloaking a yawn at the reminder of the sleep you’d been missing out on for the past however long this shit had been going on. Before relocating to the boys’ room, you hadn’t been so sure you’d get any shut-eye tonight, but held in Diego’s arms now, you couldn’t think of anything you’d rather do.
“I think I’m okay for the end of the world,” you said.
Diego smiled and moved closer to the back of the couch, allowing you more space, though you didn’t relinquish his chest as your headrest, which he was more than fine with. “Try and get some sleep. You know Five’ll have us up at the crack of dawn, saving mankind ‘n all that.”
“Hmm.” You settled against your brother, closing your eyes and focusing on the blissfulness of silence. “Wait ‘til I tell him he looked like a kid woken from his lunchtime nap.”
“Oh, yeah. Don’t forget that. Humble him a bit.”
“I definitely won earlier, Di, didn’t I?”
Diego sent a tight-lipped smile to the ceiling. Older brother, end of the world, and all that. He could afford his sister some triumph.
“‘Course you did, babe,” he said.
You definitely hadn’t.

The Stolen Umbrella || Weddings & Funerals --- ꒰ ch. 6 -> a bump in the night ꒱
A Diego Hargreeves x F!Reader Series
❛     [Five] thought to himself, maybe if they found each other again—and they had enough time of course—just maybe they could visit the spot. The spot in the once-city none of them could quite put their finger on but still spoke of often cause damn it, it had to exist;
'Wherever the stars shone the brightest.' ❜
Tumblr media
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐃 just started to set over the horizon; the moon crawling through its dimming rays and into sight and yet all Five has managed to find throughout the entire house is an expired cocoa mix. Yet still, his search continues. He needed the caffeine to keep his mind on one thing at a time. Right now it was all a jumbled mess, and yet somehow caffeine always treated this.
With every empty shelf he came upon, his patience thinned. He was anxious to get to work and more importantly get the hell out of here. The longer he stayed the more likely he was to put the others in danger. He straightened at the thought, moving onto another shelf as he made the mental preparations in his head. Maybe Griddy's was still open.
The walls began to shake around him and the collection of glass jars in front of his nose began to rattle. The symphony of clinks the glass made together seemed to mock him and a frustrated scowl twisted up his entire face. He paused only a moment as his head dropped to his chest and he sighed in great agitation. Not this again. It had to be connected, it just had to be. It was no mistake consistent earthquakes limited only to the estate of the world's only publicly known superheroes have grown more frequent and erratic to the point of near destruction only days away from the horrors he had found in the future.
And yet, the same annoying thought flew across his mind; would he have the time? Would eight days be enough? He shook the slippery slope of a question from his mind. It would have to be. And he'd have to work with what he got. And that included those dear siblings of his that didn't seem to catch on to urgency. Klaus had been trying to pry questions out of him since he cornered him in the kitchen, but Five was an expert in dodging social interactions. Of course, Allison was a bit more persistent.
    "Where's Viktor?" She asked.
Klaus hugged the guitar he seemed to have procured out nowhere to his chest and heaved a heavy sigh. "Oh, he's gone."
    "That's unfortunate--" Five began.
    Allison nodded. "Yeah,"
"--an entire square block. Forty-two bedrooms, nineteen bathrooms but no, not a single drop of coffee." He finishes.
    "Dad hated caffeine,"
"Well, he hated children and he had plenty of us," Klaus fakes a laugh, stopping instantly and eyeing his siblings as he hugs the guitar.
"I'm taking the car," Five says, like his sister, ignoring Klaus's remarks.
The man in question picks his feet up from where they had been lounging on the table and leans forward in his seat, intrigued. "Where are you going?"
"To get a decent cup of coffee,"
"Do you even know how to drive?" Allison asks sounding almost amused.
"I know how to do everything," Five hisses, glaring at the near teasing look in his sister's eye.
A deep and thunderous rumble swallowed the tension sitting in the air and stole away the stage for their petty sibling arguments. Concern spread amongst all of them. Even Diego, who wandered cautiously into the kitchen with a duffle bag found his eyes scanning the room for a headcount. The aftershock settled down into nothing after several lengthy moments, 17.8 seconds to be precise—the longest and loudest tremor yet and it was clear to all; they were getting worse by the hour. When it finally came to a stop, a thoughtful and almost calculating look seemed to fall over Five as if he was choosing his next few words carefully despite the body language of his next actions.
With his hands tucked into his pockets, Five lumbers across the kitchen, throwing a half glance to Allison and Diego before blinking out of the room. "As much as I'd love to stick around and see what happens when this pile of bricks can't take whatever the hell dearest dad did to simulate a DIY earthquake, I've got some coffee to hunt down."
The three of them stand abandoned in the silence left by their brother and the aftershock. The only sound to fill it was the car engine roaring to life outside, signaling Five's departure. They knew all too well he was right. These quakes were only getting worse and with no signs of stopping. And neither of them wanted to find out just how bad they would become.
As if sensing their fears—mocking them—yet another unforeseen tremor hits the house and all inside; the worst one yet. Their entire life's experience with the anomaly not once had they feared for their safety until now. They had all been informed every precaution had been taken to ensure their safety so that they may carry on throughout their day—but this no longer seemed the case.
"Alright, under the table! Everybody, let's move it, come on!" Diego ordered, herding his siblings together and throwing back any chairs that stood in their way.
Klaus let out a fearful cry as he hugged the leg of the table. "What's happening!?"
The three of them huddled in close proximity under what space was given under the table, watching in panic as the world came crumbling apart piece by piece. The glass jars Five had just been rifling through came flying off the shelves, shattering just inches away from their ankles with which miraculously managed to avoid cutting them. The fridge teetered more than usual from where it stood in between the stove and counter but never strayed from where it was bolted to the wall, not unlike all other appliances and giant bookshelves that could become lethal in such instances. But it frightened them nonetheless.
The sound was nearly as bad as the shaking. While all they have ever known was thunderous explosions of noise, this sounded of actual thunder more than it ever had. It crackled and reverberated off the trembling walls, swallowed by its own boisterous echo. Bits of ceiling rained down from the skies in the form of powder and the soft yellow lights illuminating the kitchens flickered exactly six times before going out completely.
The aftershock was as bad as the tremors used to be when they were children but they were just thankful it seemed to be calming.
Several minutes had passed by the time they deemed it safe enough to exit the table and they each clambered to their feet. Allison was the first to break the ice.
"Okay, what the hell?" It comes out in more of an exclamation than a question, and her brothers seem to share her frustrations.
"Five's onto something," Diego says, eyeing the room distrustfully. "I have a feeling whatever is causing this isn't gonna magically fix itself. We should check it out,"
With a grave expression upon her face, Allison seeks out her brother in the darkness and nods. "Then we better get moving,"
An unspoken agreement passes between them and the two make their way through the darkness. Allison reaches the counter first and retrieves four flashlights they had kept stashed for emergencies, handing two of them to her brothers. Diego nods in thanks and takes the lead up the stairs with Allison close on his heels. Neither of them seemed to realize Klaus was reluctant to follow.
He stood clutching the flashlight he miraculously managed to catch in the darkness, the only light aiding him was moonbeams leaking in from across the room. He watches with a pitiful and apprehensive expression on his face, feeling rather trapped. He was not particularly anxious to go stumbling around in the dark in the middle of a series of spontaneous earthquakes, nor was he eager to stand around like a sitting duck in the dark in the midst of a series of spontaneous earthquakes.
"Is anyone else at all suspicious of Five's timing? Cutting it a little close, don't you think?" He calls weakly, frowning down at his flashlight when it doesn't come on.
He gives it a few whacks and a beam of light flickers on. He points it at the stairs where his siblings have disappeared and his shoulders slump. The complaint registers in his ear and he nods at his brother in agreement as they begin their ascent to the first floor after their siblings.
"I know! They can be so callous sometimes, can't they?" he says. Klaus turns his attention to the retreating footsteps in the distance and calls weakly after their siblings. "You know, you could have grabbed Ben a flashlight,"
"Like you ever bother telling them I'm here," remarks the sarcastic voice of the sixth sibling.
Waiting at the top of the first landing, his all-black hoodie and jeans made him near impossible to see in the darkness but he was there all the same. With a tired smirk on his face and mischief in his eyes.
𝐍𝐔𝐌𝐁𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐈𝐗
"𝐁𝐄𝐍"
(𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅)
"You know they wouldn't listen," Klaus says. "They always think I'm high,"
    "You are always high,"
"Psh," Klaus waves off his brother as he passes him. "Tomato, patato."
Ben sends Klaus's back an eye roll and a smile creeps up on his face as he begrudgingly follows.

There were exactly two things about the world that hadn't seemed to have changed a bit since his departure that Five Hargreeves was certain of; shitty drivers and Gritty's Doughnuts. And Five much preferred the latter. In fact, the old doughnut shop hadn't seemed to have aged a day nor did it look as if had been visited since he and his siblings had given the state of the place. And yet all the magic it held in his youth had been sucked dry. But Five preferred the lack of company, it gave him time to think.
He took a seat at the counter and gave the bell inches from his hand a quick ring. All he could do now was wait. Almost instantly, another bell chimes in the quiet atmosphere but it had come from the front door signaling another customer. One over-the-shoulder glance told him it was a trucker just off the late shift. He took a seat just one spot over from himself which struck Five as odd given all the room, but he didn't protest. The man seemed no more eager to chit chat than he was, and in a matter of moments was already reading the paper he had pulled from his vest pocket.
The head waitress scurried out from the back and offered Five and the man an apologetic smile. "Sorry, sink was clogged. So," she gave a polite chuckle and pulled a pen and paper from her uniform and looked between the two of them. "What'll it be?"
"Uh, give me a chocolate eclair," the man said.
"A chocolate eclair, sure," she scribbled into her pad and gestured to Five. "Can I get the kid, uh, a glass of milk or something?"
Five fought a twitch in his eye. "The kid wants coffee. Black."
She laughed nervously, looking back to the man unsure. "Cute kid,"
The man just looked at her, not knowing what to make of the situation. She returned her attention to Five and plastered all over his face was the cheesiest and widest grin he could possibly exaggerate until she left. It seemed to do the trick; her smile quickly fell and she retreated into the shelves and got to work on the coffee.
A great sigh escapes Five's lips and before he realizes what he's doing he finds himself striking up a conversation with the man.
"I don't remember this place being such a shithole," he remarks.
Maybe it was years of emotional fatigue and more than enough baggage to fill an airport weighing down his conscience, or maybe it was because this was a stranger who wouldn't fuss over him like his siblings no doubt would.
Or maybe, it was because Five knew this man had information he wanted and he needed to soften him up a bit before he would help him.
"I used to come here as a kid," he said in a tone as wistful as Five Hargreeves could get. "Used to sneak out with my brothers and sister and eat doughnuts 'till we puked. Simpler times, huh?"
A vacant expression seemed to be all this man could offer anymore. He couldn't make heads or tails of who this kid was or why he was speaking as if he was no older than himself.
"Eh," he shrugged weakly. "I suppose."
His hand dove into his pocket fishing for his wallet just as the waitress made her rounds with a cup of coffee and bagged pastry. The man passed her a ten and polite smile. "I got his."
"Thanks," Five says, genuinely surprised. The man nods.
Five lands another look at the man and judging by the embroidery on his vest—Ismael's Towing—he realized he had been wrong about him being a trucker. But he was right about the man having what he wanted; a decent idea of where anything was in this town.
"You must know your way around the city," Five says.
Five wasn't naive. He knew he had work to get done. Not to mention he'd have a lot of stops to make already, but seeing her was just too much of a temptation. The one who had gotten him through his days as the last man on earth. Finding her in that wasteland was a miracle, and knowing she was somewhere here...
"I hope so," answered the man. "I've been driving it for twenty years."
Five's heart leapt into his throat and he had to kick himself for it. Maybe he was naive. The clock was ticking and here he was out getting coffee, head in the clouds. He could feel his hopes slipping from his fingers where they were grounded and sailing up to the sky like a rogue balloon. But he just couldn't shake the thought of one of their many idle conversations to get through the night. Granted they were rather one-sided but Five knew how to fill the gaps.
'Wherever the stars shone the brightest.'
    He thought to himself, maybe if they found each other again—and they had enough time of course—just maybe they could visit the spot. The spot in the once-city none of them could quite put their finger on but they still spoke of often cause damn it, it had to exist;
The memory slipped through his fingertips like quicksand, reminding him all too harshly where and when he was. Hardly any time at all had passed and Five forced a smile.
    "Good. I need an address."

The man tightens his hat on his head as he steps out into the night. He retrieves his keys from his pocket and unlocks his truck blissfully unaware of the group of soldiers waiting around the corner in all black for the diner to clear out.
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
The coffee barely touches his tongue when Five hears the ring of the customer bell for the third time since he sat down. His eyes fall to the service bell sitting on the counter that acts as a rearview mirror in a pinch where he makes out several men in all black. Figures They'd be dumb enough to send the lowest of the low. These poor saps were no better than interns. They stood no chance.
Five sighs and places his coffee back down on the counter. "I thought I'd have more time before They found me," he wonders aloud.
"Okay," says the agent who was no doubt in charge of this ragtag group of lackeys. There was an edge to his voice. He was nervous and Five wasn't at all surprised. "So let's all be professional about this, yeah?" Five nods along battling an amused smirk all the while. It was like watching a six-year-old trying to order his own meal, trying to act all sophisticated. It was adorable. "On your feet and come with us. They want to talk."
    "I've got nothing to say,"
"It doesn't have to go this way. You think I wanna shoot a kid? Go home with that on my conscious?"
    Okay, now he was annoying.
"Well, I wouldn't worry about that," He looks at the man for the first time with a tired smirk plastered all over his face. "You won't be going home."
The man is already dying before he can process the butter knife Five had discreetly plucked from the counter and plunged into one of his major arteries. The machine gun in his hand misfires into one of his partners and as they both collapse to the ground, yet another round of misfired bullets rain down among the empty doughnut shop. The others looked around through the sea of faulty flashing lights in a frenzy.
    "Hey, assholes!"
There lounging on one of the tables was none other than their target with a smug look burning in his eyes. The only distinguishing feature of his that wasn't a look of inherent boredom that was otherwise all over his face. But by the time they unleashed fire, he had vanished into thin air leaving an utterly destroyed wall littered with bullet holes behind him. They gaped at the scene, their brains desperately trying to draw up any logical conclusion as to where the kid could have gone or how he could have done it, no matter how far-fetched. Maybe he somehow dove behind the counter?
Or maybe he was already standing behind them waiting patiently for someone to notice as he stood out on the front step just outside.
Who was he kidding? He'd be here all night waiting on these clowns.
He gave a soft knock on the glass of the front door to speed things along and the man closest to him whirled around with a wild look in his eyes. Five sent him a charming smile and a quick salute before the second reign of bullets crashed through the window and out into the street, missing him completely. The man's bewilderment bought Five some time. Not to catch his breath or anything arbitrary like that, no. No, now he had time to ponder, as he blinked back and forth across the shop, if he had time for a bathroom break. Most likely, he concluded, what with how embarrassingly easy this was going.
They knew of his rank and skill set. Were they trying to insult him?
They were finished off within a matter of moments and Five stood amidst the now not-so-technically-empty diner and blinked back the nuisance that was the flickering LED lights. He strolled across the shop and to one of many bodies he had... produced and removed his tie from the man's strangled neck, returning it to its proper place amongst his uniform. He tightened it around his neck, securing it neatly in place and as he did so he noticed the straggler just around the corner. He took quick care of the issue, kneeling over the twitching body and twisting his neck in one swift movement. His eyes didn't fail to notice the glowing device just inches away from the man's hand and he recognized it at once.
A tracking device for rogue agents not unlike himself. Five plucked it from the ground with an inward grimace knowing what he had been dreading since his return was something he could no longer afford to put off.

I know when im not wanted, Five
Five x fem!reader (one sided n past) Marcus x fem!reader
This sucks im so sorry
Mashing two requests!
first :
requested by anon
Hello! Can I request a Five Hargreeves oneshot (Season 3)
The reader is the same age as Five but recently worked for the commission for decades then became partners at work over the few years Five worked (they helped them saving the world twice)
The reader (Male/Female/GN) is basically head over heels for Five like showering him their love and affection towards the old man.
But since Five is well... Five he didn't reciprocate their feelings and kept rejecting them with harsh words.
Five never felt any type of guilt until he saw the reader crying after he went too far.
Five to the reader: "Can't you understand a simple 'no'? Do you want me to speak in Italian? Spanish? Greek? I hope the Kugelblitz took you and not my brothers!"
He was about to apologize when the reader was taken by the ball of light (Kugelblitz)
Five to the others: "I never got the chance to apologize to her/him/them"
I'm so sorry that it's so detailed 😭
second
Request by @raritysyarn
Hello! There's been a serious lack of Marcus fics (yes he appeared for like two episodes but I love him sm) and I was wondering if you could write Marcus comfort with a Fem!Reader or GN!Reader (your preference)? I was thinking of something where Reader has super speed and saves Marcus from the kugelblitz. Marcus' confidence is like completely drained so Reader comforts him? Thank you so much! ^^
tw : TUA 3 spoilers same warnings as TUA
Im gonna kinda change it up a bit and hope you still like it? i dont really do angsty endings for reader, i love when reader is a happy bitch, five is 19 so is reader, the rest are around 23 instead of 30.. again sorry for not writing the angsty ending! if you guys want me to write this with another character dont be shy to request one!
When you all blinked to a new timeline your face is blank "Can't you understand a simple 'no'? Do you want me to speak in Italian? Spanish? Greek? I wished the handler killed you!" is haunting your mind.
When Marcus says "you have 30 seconds to leave" you perk up "where is the exit?" you ask making him call for someone named Grace "Grace please lead the lady to the front door" Grace nods "Im sorry for breaking into your house, i didnt mean to" you say voice breaking slightly.
Grace's hand falls onto your back before she starts leading you to the door, you exit the living room but not before hearing "damn that is one pretty woman" and a thud
You reach the front door and Grace opens it "thank you for visiting, hope to see you again soon!" she beams face twitching slightly "thank you Grace" you softly say before exiting the house and walking through the garden.
You walk through the park seeing happy couples and feeling your heart crack.
Time skip till after the fight
"why did y/n just leave like that? she has always helped us, what changed?" Allison asks concerned for the girl who is like a sister to her "Five what did you do?" Viktor asks him making Five scoff "i just turned her down, she was getting on my nerves!" he tells his siblings
Fei scoffs making her siblings turn to her "the girl that left and looked dead inside? the little one crushed her heart" she tells her siblings, Sloane puts her hand on her heart "Oh that poor thing, i should find her and bring her here!" she says making Marcus nod "yes she could also give us extra info on that awful family" he says straightning up his tie
"What was that?" Ben asks Marcus "nothing" Marcus quickly defends himself making Ben clench his jaw "sure number one" Ben spits that last part
Sloane quickly grabs a coat and grabs an extra one "I dont know her size so im just borrowing a jacket of yours is that okay?" she asks Alphonso making him nod before Jayme elbows him "Im not fat" he defends himself making Sloane giggle "i know that silly this jacket is massive though, why did you buy it?" she replies making Jayme nod "good i would've killed you"
Sloane grabs onto Marcus his arm and pulls him with her, Marcus sends a smirk Ben's way before lifting his head up highly and snatching the jacket from Sloanes hand throwing it on the coat hanger "wait" Sloane says "Fei where is she?"
You sit down next to the entrance to a hotel called Obsidian, you slightly shiver before feeling something land on your skirt covered thighs "you look cold" a smooth voice says "you should put it on or you might freeze there, love"
You look up and see the guy from earlier now sporting a bruise around his eye "Marcus right?" you ask making him nod "yes thats me, now put the coat on" he says again making you put on the sparrow blazer, Marcus rolls his sleeves up slightly before sitting down next to you.
"You left pretty easily back there" he speaks up after a moment of silence, his eyes focussed on you in his blazer, Sloane peaking out from behind a bush secretly spying on her brother, a crow sitting next to her also watching.
"Yeah well i wasnt wanted, didnt want to be scolded like a child" you say trying to sound joking but your voice comes out shaky, you turn your head to look at him only to notice him staring at you.
"I know we just met but you should come home with me, i dont want you to freeze to death and we could use info on the people you came with" he says "nothing personal, i really hope you come willingly"
"Do you have hot cocao?" you ask him softly making him smile "fuck yeah we got anything you want" he replies making you smile back softly, he jumps up and offers his hand to you, you go to grab it but are interupted.
"y/n!" Five says walking over his family trailing behind him, you roll your eyes and take Marcus his hand who pulls you up with ease "your too late, pretty girl is coming with me" Marcus teases him with a smirk Five's eyes twitch "im not letting you kidnap her" he sneers making Marcus laugh
"y/n is coming with me willingly, isnt that right?" he asks you making you nod "i know when im not wanted, Five" you tell him making him scoff "not wanted? really, not fucking wanted?" he asks offended
you scoff "Can't you understand a simply 'no'? Do you want me to speak in Italian? Spanish? Greek? I wished the handler killed you!" you repeat Five's words to him making him take a step back, he opens his mouth to speak but Marcus is faster "you should walk. the. fuck. away." the taller man says, venom filling his voice
FLASH BACK to before blinking to the present
You turn to Five while waiting for the others to show up "When we get back do you uhm.. maybe wanna go get some coffee with me?" you ask him making him roll his eyes "what like a date?" he asks making you nod, he scoffs "no" he replies making you take a step back, you open your mouth to say something but he puts his hand up "Can't you understand a simple 'no'? Do you want me to speak in Italian? Spanish? Greek? I wished the handler killed you" he tells you right before Diego runs up
FLASH BACK OVER
Five scoffs "no" he says making Marcus chuckle before he starts walking away, pulling reader with him who has a hard time keeping up with his long steps, Five blinks in front of them "so what your betraying me now?" he asks you making you look away "you betrayed me first, Five, not once did you reject me or tell me you didnt like me flirting with you and giving you all my affection, and then you just slam me down? And what? You expected me to just run back to you after you crushed my heart?" you demand, a tear rolling down your eye
"Listen y/n and me we need to leave" Marcus says, its then Sloane runs up "yeah we need to leave" she says before grabbing your hand and pulling you with her "im Sloane, you and me? we will be bestfriends!" she beams making you beam back
Five glares at Marcus "i will kill you" Five threatens making Marcus laugh "sure little buddy, would love to see you try" he replies with a smirk before he starts following the two girls
Sloane points at random things and tells you about them making you nod and hum, when you reach the building Sloane turns to you "Ben hes a bit... wary of strangers so dont mind him" she says with a smile
In the living room you are greeted by the other four siblings Alphonso elbows Jayme who is standing next to him and she straightens up "welcome back your majesty" she says sarcastially making Alphonso scoff "we are supposed to be nice to her, she would be a good add on to our choatic duo, make it a trio" he scolds her making you giggle
Marcus his eyes shoot towards you with a love struck look on his face "Siblings please get out so i can question our guest" he says after clearing his throat and sitting on a chair, when his siblings leave he gestures to the couch across from the chair he is on
You sit down and he calls out for Grace "get the lovely lady a hot cocao please" he asks grace making her nod and smile "so glad to see you again" she beams making you smile back at her
You shiver lightly "you cold darling?" he asks making you nod "just a little, but the hot cocao will warm me right up" you reply with a smile, he frowns "i cant have my special guest be cold" he tells you while getting up and walking to the fire place and throwing some wood on it making the fire get slightly bigger
He sits down in front of the fire and holds his arm up, you get up and sit next to him, his arm wraps around your shoulder softly pulling you into him "better?" he asks making you nod "much"
You rest your head on his chest making him sigh in relief "i would never do that y'know?" he asks making you look up at him "what do you mean?" "i would never treat you like that" he says looking back at you
You burry your head into his chest making him smirk "i got hot cocao!" Grace beams walking into the living room before putting two cups down in front of you and marcus "Im going back to god now" she says before walking off
"God?" you ask Marcus making him frown, he gets up pulling you with him before he starts following grace, you trail behind him
When you enter the basement you see Marcus reaching out to a big flying orb, you stop time running over to him using your speed, his hand is about an inch away from the orb and you turn him around before letting time go back again
Marcus his hand falls onto your shoulder "how?" he asks "you cant just touch random flying balls!" you scold him "you couldve died!" you hug him making him freeze "im sorry Darling, your absolutely right" he says before placing a peck on your forehead
You punch his chest before pulling away "stupid men" you mutter softly before running back into the living room, Marcus runs behind you "YOU ARE REALLY FAST" he yells at you making you giggle before falling infront of the fireplace again
"its my gift" you beam at him when he finally reaches the living room again, he is panting and out of breath "gimme a moment sweetheart" he says with his hands on his knees
When he finally catches his breath again he sits down next to you "so.." he trails off making you look at him "so.." you mock him making him chuckle
"i think the people you came with caused that thing down stairs" he tells you making you nod "we didnt mean to!" you pout, his hand holds your cheek and his thumb carresses your bottom lip "i know honey i know" he coos
Something hits him in the back of the head making him scoff before he turns around and sees Five "what was the point in that?" he asks the smaller guy while standing up
"Five why are you here?" you ask him while grabbing Marcus his arm and using him to pull yourself up "i love you" Five says taking a step towards you making you take a step back
"You dont get to do this" you tell him making him scoff "i love you y/n, just come with me please?" he asks making you shake your head
Marcus softly pulls you behind him "your trespassing kid, you should leave before i make you" he tells Five with a glare "get ur paws off my girl" Five growls out making Marcus laugh
"you rejected her, she isnt your girl" Marcus snarls
"okay wait, you guys can fight later but like.. Shouldnt we do something about that flying orb?" you say
Five clicks his tongue "what flying orb?" he asks curious, Marcus scoffs but starts walking towards the basement, your hand in his
"that orb" Marcus says when you enter the basement "you guys caused it when you came here" Five steps forward and goes to touch it but you stop him "dont touch it unless you wanna die" you tell him
He looks back at you then glares at where your hand is connected to Marcus's hand "i think i know what this is" Five trails off before jumping away
You roll your eyes before pulling your hand away from Marcus making him worried, his worry doesnt last long when you throw yourself into his arms with soft sobs
"oh sweetheart dont cry" he coos "i got you" he whispers before kissing your temple "hes a scumbag" you sob out
When your sobs stop marcus softly lifts you up and wraps your legs around his waist before walking you back to the living room where he lays down on the couch
"today must've been hard on you my love, go take a nap, we can talk tomorrow" he says before kissing your forehead

Chapter 3: Bail and Boiler Rooms
The faint glowing orb hovers just beyond Diego as he approaches a crime scene. She continues to follow him until he is busted by Patch. The image of him being tazed made her laugh, or she probably laughed. The Wisp couldn't exactly make verbal noises, and her body wasn't really her main focus. It was safe at the academy. She watches Patch take his radio and fake badge. With a sigh, Y/N didn’t let the orb fade as she pulled back most of her consciousness. She kept enough of her mind there to keep to the periphery of wherever her brother was. She was vaguely aware of how he’d seem to furrow his brow and glance in the light’s direction as he was moved. But she would shift the positioning every time and refocus on what she was doing in her primary form.
She didn’t need him drawing attention to the fact she was basically sneaking around, especially once at the precinct. She was basically trespassing. But it was technically not illegal. She knew physically she wasn’t trespassing, physically her body was at the academy. No one could prove what the lights were. Not like they could catch her. The Wisp technically didn’t have a corporeal form, especially when it was just a small fraction of her powers. She makes quick work of changing out of her pajamas and grabs her coat as she slips on her shoes. She doesn’t bother sneaking out like she would have done as a child. Her father wasn’t there to scold her. She glanced at Grace up in her little alcove as she made her way to the door. Allison and Luther wouldn’t care if she left. She didn’t need to leave a note or make excuses. She knew they cared for her, in their own way, but what did it matter in the long run? She was rarely there anyway. And really, was she even really mentally there now? If Grace or Pogo had noticed, she’d have told them, but they didn’t. It was like everyone was off in their own little worlds. Ones that were almost foreign to her now. She makes her way to the police station. She ignores the staring and hushed whispers. Especially when the glow around her seems to intensify for a moment as she lets the orb that had been watching over Diego fade and her powers settle into her form. She forced a sweet smile on her face at the double-take she got as she approached the desk sergeant on duty.
“Umm, hi, I’m here to collect my idiot brother, Diego Hargreeves. Detective Patch-”
“Is right here,” a voice calls as the detective approached. “Wasn’t aware anyone made a call to his family to collect him.”
“They didn’t,” Y/N states. “I try to keep tabs on my siblings, and I’m not normally in town, but-”
“Y/N, right?” Patch says as she gestures for Y/N to follow her.
“Yeah,” the last of the Hargreeves nodded.
“Not exactly the sibling I figured would be the one to bail him out,” Patch admits.
“Sometimes I surprise even myself,” Y/N mumbles.
“I read the book, you know,” Patch tells her as they approach the hallway to the holding cells. Patch doesn’t miss the way the glow around Diego’s sister flickers, and dims momentarily, as the glowing form lets out a dry chuckle. “Then I’m not surprised you think it’s odd I’m here.”
“Maybe,” Patch nods. “But family, Hargreeves or not, are often the ones to collect their wayward siblings from lock up. From what it sounds like, you’re not unfamiliar with the process.”
Y/N snorts a laugh again. “I’m sure some poor desk sergeant or even hospital has my number stamped on a file for Klaus.”
“Always frustrating when they won't even help themselves, let alone let you help them,” Patch says somewhat vaguely as she signs a paper and gestures to an officer towards the holding cells. She waits until the guard opens the cell and calls Diego out. The glowing Hargreeves didn’t move into the hallway, instead choosing the lean on the wall beside the entryway. She can feel the exhaustion of the day deep in her bones. The strain of keeping the Wisp contained and dimmed to limit the awkwardness to those around her wasn’t helping. She takes a few seconds to mentally prep for dealing with whatever would come out of Diego’s mouth when he finds out she was there. She silently waits while her brother and the detective have a short talk. She pushes off the wall when she hears them approach. She steps closer to the hallway as they come into view.
Patch gestures to Diego and tells her, “Well, this one is your problem now.”
“Thanks, Detective,” the female Hargreeves nods. The detective leaves the siblings for what is bound to be an awkward reunion.
“I knew it!” Diego shouted when Patch was gone. Ignoring the way her shoulders immediately stiffen as she crosses her arms over her chest. “I knew I saw that demon light of yours.”
“Rude to say to the only sibling that bothered to bail you out,” Y/N grit her teeth and shook her head at his tone. “Your welcome, by the way.” Trying to mentally remind herself what Five had said, they needed to work together.
“I didn’t ask for you to bail me out,” Diego seethes.
“And I didn’t ask if you cared,” she glares at him. “Because wow, shocker, you don’t. But Grace does, so again, you’re welcome.”
“They would have let me go in the morning,” Diego states.
“And…you know what, yeah, they probably would have. But I told Five I would try, and-” She stops and rubs at her temples. She missed the confused look Diego gave her before he schooled his features. He had no idea that Five had asked her to do anything outside of what he’d told all of them. Let alone anything having to do with Diego. He eyed her cautiously as she continued. “It has been a very long day, and I forgot how exhausting trying to actually care for everyone is.”
“I didn’t-”
“I know, Diego, okay?” He watched as her shoulders dropped as she spoke. She looked tired. “I get it. You don’t need help. You don’t want help, especially from me,” she said, her tone almost as blue as the Wisp’s glow.
“That’s not–” he started to argue.
“Can we just go home?” She asks before flinching at her own choice of words. The academy wasn’t home anymore. Hadn’t been for years. And why was she asking him? Why did she even want to go back? Everyone she was used to caring for was gone. The ones that used to actually want her around or seek her out weren’t there. Not even Vanya said goodbye. Five was back, but he didn’t seem to have time for her. Ben’s statue was still broken and a painful reminder that no one was going to need her during the night. And she knew her siblings still felt unnerved by the Wisp these days. Or really at who she had become. What had changed? Nothing really.
Diego watched as her brow furrowed, and she seemed to be arguing with herself. “Hold on-”
“You can go home,” she says as she turns on her heels, she was too tired to argue with him anymore. “I’m going to go back to the academy. Try not to get arrested again. I would like to get a few hours of sleep.”
She manages to catch a bit of sleep, but it was far from decent. And left pretty much to herself, she sat on the bed, back to the wall, and sent out her orbs. Pulling back one by one as she figured out where her siblings were. But something at the back of her mind still pushed her. So she pulls her focus back into her own body and goes to where she knows Diego lives. She uses her Wisp as a distraction as she enters the gym and sneaks her way into the boiler room he stays in.
She is surprised when Luther finds her first. "Huh, not the brother I expected to see here," she states.
"You here to see if he killed dad too?" Luther asks.
“What? No.” She shakes her head. "I'm here because he’s a self-destructive idiot who is going to get himself arrested again."
"For murder?" He asks for clarification. “Wait, again?”
“Yes again. And no, for impersonating a cop. As lovely as his detective friend is, I’m not sure she’ll be as happy to see me in such a short time span, even if it is to bail his ass out and get him out of her hair.”
“You bailed him out?” Luther says, shocked. “Diego. You bailed Diego out of jail.”
“I bail out Klaus all the time,” she states.
“But you like Klaus, and this is Diego we’re talking about.”
“You wouldn’t if called upon?” She tries to make this less about her.
“He called you to bail him out?” He asks in utter disbelief. Diego hated her almost as much as he hated him.
“Of course not, no one called me-” She realizes her slip-up as Luther’s eyebrow raises.
“Wait, no one called you to bail him out, and you did?”
“He’s still our brother, Luther,” her voice a bit quieter than it had been when she adds, “Even if he hates me.”
“But how did you…wait, you didn’t-” Luther starts, but she is quick to change to the topic.
"Luther, do you really think he had something to do with our father's death?"
Again Luther goes to say something about the previous topic but remembers this was why he was there in the first place."Well, someone had to have done it, and Diego hated him and keeps insisting it was just heart failure."
"Because that is what the coroner’s report said. Pogo would have talked to the coroner as well. If this is some big cover-up by Diego, do you really think he’d have that power? He didn’t even have the power to not get arrested by Patch like yesterday. And for the record, we all hated Dad for something," she states.
"That's not true," Luther says.”Are you really defending Diego right now? You?”
"Luther, you are the only one that thinks that there was any good to Reginald Hargreeves. And I cannot imagine why even you think that. Luther, he left you on the moon, alone, for how long? He put you somewhere even I couldn’t find you. And I tried. Doesn’t that upset you?” She wanted to grab him by his oversized shoulders and shake him, but that seemed ridiculous, so she continued to argue her point. “Look at what he did to us, Luther. He pushed and encouraged Allison to rely on her powers so much that she now is struggling not to use them after they cost her her marriage and custody of her kid. He was downright cruel to Klaus, locking him alone in a dark crypt filled with ghosts until he passed out. He spent so many nights in my room just to survive the nightmares and hell our father made him endure. I spent so much of my life being his personal nightlight, and I will never forget those nights. Or regret them. Same for Ben. And look at Vanya. He treated Vanya terribly like she was no one. No, that implies he saw any of us as people. We were weapons, Luther. Tools. He used us. And do you even know what he did to me? I mean I know what he did to the others because I would watch it all. Just like I did yesterday. I send tiny little pieces of me out there,” she gestures to the world outside of them. “To look after all of you. Do you want to know why? Because Reginald Hargreeves pushed me to it. Got under my skin so that if I don’t know what is going on, then I’m weak. That if you, or them, get hurt it’s my fault for ignoring my gifts. I know he was doing it to not only keep tabs on everyone, to spy. And that wasn’t even half of what he did. Sometimes he pushed just to see how many Wisps I could create, control, and put myself into, knowing full well it not only left my actual body vulnerable, risked stretching myself so thin I might forget to breathe. He knew it messed with my head, my senses. Do you know how overwhelming it is to have your senses being attacked from every direction from multiple perspectives and your mind has to somehow process it all simultaneously while still attempting to fight and protect yourself? It was like my brain was on fire. It was overwhelming, and it hurt. But he still pushed. He’d tell me to move between them faster. Focus better. Fight harder." She shook her head. "And he still expected me to be at breakfast the next morning like my mind hadn't been broken apart and forced back together. Like my senses weren't screaming, overwhelmed, and overstimulated until I thought my head or sometimes my whole body would just explode. I know you cared for him, Luther, but most of us stopped caring for the sake of our sanity. I did. I know V did. And I’m pretty sure Diego did too."
"But you didn't kill him," Luther states.
"No, I didn't,” she replies, her tone even and sure. “Do you need my alibi?"
"No," Luther says. “Even if you let your emotions get the best of you sometimes, you’d have walked away, like in the courtyard. I mean, you haven’t killed Diego yet. That’s saying something. And Diego, well, I wouldn’t put it past him.”
"I haven’t killed you either, and the two of you destroyed Ben’s statue,” she counters.
“It was an accident,” he argues, “And I didn’t want any of that to happen. I just wanted Dad to have a memorial. Someone killed him, and no one seems to care but me!”
“The worst part of all of this is I do care, Luther. I do. I keep telling myself I shouldn’t, but I do. I just don’t see it, Luther. I’m sorry, but do you think dad would really go that easy? Like, without even the slightest fight? No defensive wounds? Diego is trained, but do you really think any of us are that good? This is the man that trained us beyond the point of exhaustion. That wanted us to keep training and fighting even after Ben died.” She turns to the massive form of her brother and made sure he was listening. “Did you stop to think that Dad didn’t want anyone to have his monocle? Maybe he did something with it. That he didn’t want to give Klaus the chance to sell it or give Diego the satisfaction of breaking it? Or maybe he lost it. He was old. I don’t know, Luther. Maybe it was someone, but there has to be an explanation that isn’t Diego killing him. As much of a pain in the ass I think Diego is, I don't think he did. And even if he was going to, which again, I don't think he would, it would have been as soon as you were on the moon and no longer in his way. I don’t think he’d have had the patience to wait this long."
“Well, I’m still going to look around,” Luther says.
“Don’t let me stop you,” she waved him off.
They settle into awkward silence. She had just trauma-dumped their childhood like she was recapping Vanya’s book and then practically spelled out the pain she didn’t let anyone see. It was almost to much for Luther’s mind to handle. So he focused on what he was there to do in the first place. He could deal with his sister later, right? She was never one he needed to worry about. She could fight like the best of them. Gave as good as she got. Sure, he knew she took the losses of their siblings hard. That was clear from the cold blue tone of her once-warm glow. But she would always seem to rally. She kept going. That was just how she was. Most of them were. He tried to shake off any doubt he had while he looks around. Though he did glance over at her as she sits down and summons a Wisp orb. The eerie blue was like the stories Pogo had originally told. Like its namesake. Her namesake. He goes back to looking as she starts shifting it between her hands as if it was a toy, a distraction. He was genuinely glad she had been using it when a knife darted through the air toward him, and she knocks it out of the air with the orb.
"Hey!" Luther shouts.
"I could smell you," Diego tells Luther as he makes his way down the stairs. "And she's about as subtle as a strobe light."
“You could have killed me,” Luther says with a glare.
“If I wanted you dead,” Diego replies, “You'd be dead.”
"Lovely to see you too, brother,” she says, not even bothering to stand up. “I see you managed to stay off the police radar since I left.” “You little-” Diego spat. “You never let me finish what I was saying. And why are you still spying on me? Dad’s dead. You don’t need to fill him in on what I do anymore.”
"Oh please," she chuckles. "As if it was just you. Klaus knows I check in on him. A lot. Luther didn’t seem to care when I told him.” Luther opened his mouth to point out he hadn’t actually said anything like that, but she kept going. “And Klaus was with you. You just happened to be doing the more stupid thing between you two." She was absolutely not going to admit she was watching out for him, more so than the others. She’d take that to her grave if she had to.
"I'm trying to figure out what is going on in this town. It can't be a-"
"Even if it isn't what do you think you can do about it? You're not a cop, Diego. Impersonating one will not end well. I bailed you out once already.”
“I DIDN’T ASK YOU TO!” Diego actually shouts. Because she still wasn’t listening to him. It’s the same argument, just a different day. Luther actually flinched as the normally blue glow around her shifted to a heated red. Even her eyes started to change. But unlike before, or really any time he’d seen her eyes change, the Wisp was nowhere in sight. It was just her. He was starting to think when she said it made her feel like she might explode earlier, she wasn’t exaggerating. He was honestly glad her ire was at least not focused on him anymore. It was focused on Diego. He was starting to wonder how these two survived being at each other's throats all the time. Then again, Luther had also just heard her defend Diego.
"I KNOW BECAUSE YOU HATE ME! I GET IT!" She screamed.
Diego started seeing red at that point, and it wasn’t just his sister’s heated powers. “YOU STILL AREN’T LISTENING! YOU NEVER DO! YOU-”
“Enough!” Luther says. “Whatever this is about, it can wait. Because you keep screaming at each other, one of two things is going to happen. One, people in the gym are going to notice and we all get kicked out. Or two, the Wisp is going set off the sprinklers, or melt something at least.”
Neither Luther nor Diego missed the way the light around her nearly vanished. The rapid shift in lighting meant it took a second for their eyes to adjust. It was like someone threw a bucket of cold water on a campfire on a dark night.
“Why are you even here?” Diego asks. “Both of you.”
“Why didn't you tell me?” Luther asks.
“Tell you what?” Diego counters, annoyed at the vague nature of the question.
“That you were fighting the night that Dad died,” Luther clarifies. “I checked with the guys out there.”
“Well, I shouldn't have to prove my innocence to you…” Diego states then glances at their sister. “Or anyone else in this family.”
“Yeah,” Luther admits. “You're right. But, I just thought that…”
“Yeah. I know what you thought.”
“Do you think I would bail you out if I thought you killed Dad?” She asks once Luther is finished talking. She pulls her jacket tighter around her as the chill of such a temperature shift sets in. “Do you still have that little faith in me?” Her brothers both look at her. “Especially after Five asked me to talk to you.”
“Is that what all this is about, something Five saw?” Luther asks.
“What did Five ask you to do?” Diego asks, it's been a constant question in the back of his mind since she’d bailed him out and had mentioned him.
“To get you to help him, to help us,” she admits.
“Is that why you’re being nice to him,” Luther gestures to Diego. “Because Five asked you to? That actually makes a lot more sense than-”
“You’re both assholes,” she tells them through clenched teeth before storming out.
“What just happened?” Diego looks at Luther.
“Did she ever tell you that using her powers made her feel like her brain was on fire and that she might explode? Or that when she splits off into different Wisps, I guess it’s like having her brain scrambled and then trying to force it back into the shell?”
“What?” Diego just stares at him like he’d grown a second head.
“Yeah, that was news to me too,” Luther says before going to follow her out.
"Told you he didn't do it." Y/N says when Luther finally catches up to her.
"So is it because of Five you’re defending him or what?"
"Yes and no. Yes, Five asked me to try and get everyone on the same page. Five thinks he might need our help. I’m not sure what for, but I guess I’m team prep. And no, because Diego might be an asshole, but he is still our brother, Luther. You’re still my brother, too."
“Do you usually use your powers to follow the others around?” Luther asks.
“Not usually, or at least for a while, I didn’t. I do it from time to time just to make sure everyone’s okay.”
“Even me?” Luther finally just asks.
“Well, I couldn’t reach the moon if that’s what you wanted to know. I mean, I’m not as powerful as the sun. Space is a bit too much for me. But before that, maybe once or twice, outside of Dad’s demands. You’re still my brother, and if I have to live with these stupid powers making me glow like a neon sign, I might as well use them to my advantage.”
“Two things. One, you said it hurts to do that, to split off and have all that stuff coming at your brain, so maybe don’t push. Phones exist, you know that, right?” Luther says. “Two, seems like an invasion of privacy.”
“Please don’t lecture me. I don’t do it much these days like that’s the first time since Vanya’s book came out I’ve followed anyone but Klaus.”
“Why Klaus?”
“Because someone has to. He needs someone to look after him, and we all know he isn’t going to do it himself.”
“Maybe you coddle him too much.”
“You find your brother passed out in a drunk tank, or worse, unconscious on a dirty mattress in a flop house with no one around that cares, and try not to worry.”
“He’s that bad?” Luther asks.
“Yes, Luther. He can get that bad, and sometimes I don’t blame him. If I could take something, a drug, anything, that could make the Wisp vanish and not start glowing like the Vegas strip for a few hours, I would, but I can’t. If I could just leave the Wisp at home and go about my day, I would, but I can’t.”
You tried that, didn’t you?”
“Yeah, and the only way I can manage that distance is if I split my consciousness, and that’s more of a headache than any hangover.”
“Like your brains on fire, I got that.” Luther grumbles. “You’re not the only one that sticks out in a crowd now.”
“I know, big guy, I know.”
“But maybe just give your brain a break. You don’t have to fry your brain because of us.”
She let out a sad laugh. “I’ll try, but being back at the academy, it’s like nothing changed. I just want to know that everyone is fine. And it's dumb because Diego is right. I started it because Dad made me. I don’t have to do this anymore. But my brain won't let it go. Like I can’t sleep.”
“Maybe we work on that,” Luther states.
“Maybe,” she sighs.
