Why was Roach looking into Cardan's eyes?👀

I suppose the entire point here is to point out to Jude that Cardan is the High King of Elfhame...but this sentence choice always struck me as odd lol

Was re-reading TWK and came across this gem!

Remember how Holly Black has always maintained that with faeries, phrasing is always important. When Grimsen gives the a-moon-and-a-star earrings to Jude for Tayrn, he says the earrings can make the wearer look more lovely- painfully lovely.

Now look at how Cardan describes Jude's beauty at the Hunter's Moon revel- Excruciating, Alarming. Distressing.

When Taryn sought to trick Cardan by posing as Jude, she wore those earrings- making her look heartchingly beautiful; and, Cardan was fooled. The fact that he was poisoned during this exchange is obviously important, but what I gather from this is that though Taryn and Jude were splitting images of each other- Cardan sort of learned to diffrentiate them.To him, it always hurt to look at Jude- to want her, despite himself, and to not be able to have her. And this pang of hurt, this yearning he felt towards Jude, became his way of telling the twins apart.

I think the way Holly Black weaves this aspect into the story with the help of enchanted earrings and clever phrasing is just beautiful!

To all the amazing Jude-Cardan fans/ analysts out there, I have one more question for you.

Help me understand why Cardan says the below line? Like, what does he want to lie about? He has always been sort of forthcoming about his desire for Jude, especially since the "Kiss me until I'm sick of it" in TWK. So, I am unable to understand what exactly does he want to lie about? What exactly am I not getting?

These two scenes hit me even more powerfully when I remember that Jude is still wearing the moon-star earrings from Grimsen, which makes the wearer looks painfully beautiful.

All I ever want in life is these scenes in Cardan's POV.

Let me remind you that after Jude falls, Cardan carries her to his room, letting her blood soak onto his clothes and then gently tends to her.
