on anti-asian violence and racism

I’m not an authority, but I’d appreciate you taking a moment to read this. This post is intended for white people, especially white people living in America. My ethnic and cultural identity is complicated, but it can be boiled down to me being a white American from a family of mostly Asian Americans. I am afraid for my family and my friends.

8 people, 6 of which were Asian women, were recently gunned down in an act of racist terrorism in an Asian massage parlor. News link here. The police are making half assed excuses on behalf of the gunman and refusing to acknowledge outright that the violence was racially motivated. We need to call a spade a spade. I don’t want to hear stories humanizing the gunman. I do want to hear acknowledgement that he is a product of systemic racism which not only lurks in dark corners of America, but is in fact a foundation of modern America as an institution. (Here is a PBS article discussing it in further detail.) Our last president openly spread anti-Asian sentiment, and you can’t pretend that didn’t happen because you didn’t vote for him. This is your problem, too, because whether you chose to live here or not, racism breeds here, and especially when no one speaks up.

Maybe you, personally. don’t know anyone who would commit racially motivated acts of physical violence. But you know someone who nevertheless holds racist views, and maybe you don’t say anything. Because it’s awkward. Because that’s just how they are, and it’s not worth the trouble. But they don’t know that. They think you’re silent because you agree. And isn’t that the same thing, in the end?

I’m not saying “make posts on social media about this or you’re a racist” or “call everyone who doesn’t make posts on social media about this racist”. I’m ESPECIALLY not comparing the movement against anti-Asian hatred to BLM. (Both are necessary causes fighting for survival and human rights. Putting them in competition is distracting from the point.) Sure, awareness is important so you can actually confront racism that lurks below the surface in your own community, and even in yourself, that has now become socially unacceptable to express openly due to progressive social movements. But most of all, I’m telling you it’s more important to actually speak up than it is to be polite. If you have people who hold racist views in your life, please start the conversation with them. And don’t go running to the nearest person of color to assuage your guilt, either. They cannot heal you. That is your burden, not theirs. 

Asians cannot opt out of this fight. So please, choose to opt in.

i’m debating deleting the wlw comic i made last year because every now and then someone will leave a comment saying the exact same thing about why it’s problematic without checking that 10 other people haven’t already told me, and i’ve posted about it before. i’ve DMed the commenters before to be like “thanks, i talked about this in this post, let me know if you’d like to discuss it further” but they never read it or reply. i don’t know what to do, because if it’s hurtful i don’t want it to just Be Out There, but people have expressed that it has significance to them so it feels bad to delete it
