College Senior Art Gallery Show

Artist Statement:

My artwork tends to touch on the topics of social and political issues, and how current events affect myself and others in my communities. The work created for this show is to shine light on these issues that the trans community faces, show that we are strong as a community, and reach out to those that are facing similar experiences. 

We are often depicted as ugly monsters by others who think that being transgender is an act against God, so I chose the iconography of werewolves to depict the community. Despite the negative implications, many members of the trans community find some sort of connection to it, including myself. I chose werewolves because of the transformation aspect of it and the fear surrounding werewolves which is similar to the fear of transgender people. 

When people start hormone replacement therapy, you essentially go through a second puberty, this can be compared to transforming into something new, like the werewolf. When a village of people find out there is a beast in their village, they do everything they can to hunt them and kill them, much like the transphobia experienced in the community. Despite this, we find ways to integrate ourselves into society, something we call “going stealth”, where we don’t mention being transgender to anyone as to not draw attention to ourselves and avoid the dangers that come with being trans. 

Some embrace their identities and are open about being transgender, and present themselves in ways that aren’t gender binary. No matter how we decide how to present ourselves, we find solidarity with each other within our community and support each other when no one else will.
