#11 So it begins
02/02/2021
Words cannot express my inner relief and how pleased I am with myself for finally really cracking on with my dissertation. I must say I am rather surprised at the amount of time I’ve spent reading this past couple of days, but alas with not much to show for it yet. I know the themes that I am going to include in my main argument; symbolic sexuality in Call Me By Your Name, or at least that’s the plan. I have no idea if I’m being efficient with my process. I’m using Numbers (the equivalent of Excel) with different tables for each theme, then columns for the passage summary, the quote and page, and then an explanation of my thoughts if I have any. I hope this will save me time later so I can then just copy and paste, as well as having all my extensive ideas clearly down, and not crammed on a post it note.
I am also reading Aciman’s latest book Homo Irrealis, which is a collection of essays around the idea of irrealis moods. This is most commonly expressed through the “might-be” or “might-have-been”, or something that “could-be”, or “could-have-been” but never was. Rubbish explanation but very interesting. It’s also very complicated. So yes that’s another thing I’m doing. It’s actually being very beneficial for my Autobiography module, and I love exploring the concepts of time and memory so it’s right up my street.
Also, peep the messy desk, lots of you liked that the last time I posted something similar. I must admit I do enjoy the look too, and I feel it’s more realistic - not saying there’s anything wrong with organising a desk for the photo - but this display’s how I personally work: i.e a mess. Also, please dont be concerned about my eyes. I am not a super-seeer (wow that’s a word I don’t think exists) with the tiny writing, I do zoom in. In person I am pretty blind and am well overdue for an eye test.
Finally, in terms of my media consumption, I have some things to catch anyone interested up on. Firstly, over Christmas my siblings and me all watched the entirety of Merlin. We finished last week or so, and I’ve not been the same since; Arthur’s death hit me hard and I am still grieving. I first watched it a over decade ago, when it was originally shown on TV and so it was nice to rewatch it because I remembered very little. It’s very much still a firm favourite. I’ve also been watching Fate: The Winx Saga, which started of as a kind of joke programme to watch, but I actually really enjoyed it! I know, a revelation to me too. And whilst it was occasionally really cringe or unrealistic, I liked the progression of the plot, and what happened. Finally, I also watched The Dig, all about the discovery and excavation of Sutton Hoo, which is near where I live. I loved the story. I’ve been to the site before, but I’m glad the event was given some much needed attention, as it is one of the most important archaeological discoveries, if not just of the 20th century, then also in British Archeaological history.
Anyway, that’s the update from me. I hope you are all keeping well and staying productive. Until next post, and don’t forget, if anyone wants to message me at any time, then do feel free!

#10 It’s the final countdown...
25/01/2021
Uni
First of all, my apology’s for not posting sooner, so a belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Well... :( Maybe not so far. As for why I haven’t posted, I took an extended break to recouperate, recharge and remotivate myself for my final term of university. For me, that’s a scary thought because I don’t really have a clear plan of where to go next. Anyway...
I’ve not been completely devoid of commitments and uni work. Before Christmas (and I forget if I mentioned it) I got myself a mentorship for my professional writing class which I’ve had a few sessions of whilst I’ve not had uni. It’s going well and I’m really enjoying spending time with my mentor virtually and learning lots of important ‘real-world’ writing skills. The latest has been how to interview, before conducting my own on her, and my latest project is writing up a magazine article based off her answers. I then get feedback, and even though I’m not in an office or anything, like I would be if the pandemic wasn’t a thing, it has still been a really beneficial and positive experience. I look forward to meeting with her because it keeps me focused and organised, and most importantly, she’s an incredible person who I love talking to.
I did have an assignment due at the beginning of January that I’m still waiting for the grade back for. I can only hope it’s good but it was a class I had lost all motivation for, and so I half-hearted the assignment so to speak, that is, not putting as much dedication as I would normally put into my work. I kind of feel guilty, but going back into a national lockdown, along with a massive demotivated slump, it was what it was.
Having said that, I am rearing to got for this semester/term. I have two classes, ‘Stranger Things’, all about young adult fiction and shows (I mean what could be better) and one on autobiography. Both, I am pleased to say, are with lecturers I know and love. I’ve even got ahead on the reading front (even if it did cause a slight existential crisis)!!
I had my first dissertation session back after the break today. I must admit, its taken an extended back bench whilst I build up my mental willpower to tackle the thing. Fortunately the session today, ‘therapy session’ as we kicknamed it as a class, was all about regaining, and more importantly, staying motivated, with lots of helpful tips and tricks on how to maintain mental health and not burn out, especially in this lockdown period. It’s due in May, with out first ‘checkpoint’ due mid-February. I’ll do an upcoming post relaying what I learnt, as my teacher said there wasn’t much online, so if I can help spread useful stuff, I am sure as hell going to do so for all of my fellow studyblr community, regardless of where you are in education. I think it’s also important I share both the ups and downs of my studying experience as whilst perfectionism is a goal many strive for, or even worse, are proud of, it can lead to anxiety, avoidable stress, and hit our mental wellbeing and motivation when things aren’t as perfect as the images we see. Summed up perfectly in a phrase I heard today ‘finished is better than perfect’.
As for my personal progress I have 16 weeks to write 10,000 words, which whilst may sound daunting, I’m splitting it into chunks like writing small essays so to speak, and I have my plan of what I want to do. Personally I find starting the hardest part of anything, and so the sooner I get cracking, the sooner I’ll get done. I even brought a new copy of my text Call Me By Your Name that I can write on and effectively destroy without feeling guilty. I’ll definitely be sharing more of my progress and process in the coming months, but for any third years right now reading this in a similar position, firstly you are not alone, and secondly, there’s no need to panic. You’ll get through this.
I’ll put more of my daily life stuff in another post for brevity, but definitely have a look at a picture I took on my walk of the sunset. On a final note, I think this sums up the current mood, at least for me ‘some progress is always better than none’. If anyone wants any further depth or has any questions, or just needs reassurance or a chat, do feel free to message me.

#9 On a Roll
03/12/2020 (just; as of writing)
Hello again!
Ever since my last post about motivation, I’ve felt inspired to do my latest assignment for my scriptwriting class. A surprise, most to myself (if that even makes sense) I actually managed to get a lot of it done before the day it’s due (which is tomorrow) and, incredibly, before even today. I know; jaw drop, absolute shock.
Anyway I am pretty happy with it, I just have to perfect the little details. I got some positive feedback from my teacher on it, so I’m feeling optimistic. Creative projects often have a habit of falling into my strengths, but obviously, we have yet to see how much of that is the case until I get the result. I am still behind on my dissertation, but I am definitely going to be tackling that head on once this is over. It’s good to be back in a positive and motivated mindset, and so I am going to making the most of it.
In terms of my life, I’m very much enjoying opening my advent calendar, although I am very surprised by how quickly December is going. The run up to Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year, and I like to savour every moment. I am progressing through Rebecca which I am still enjoying. I am slightly concerned about my room, because it desperately needs a tidy, and in the back of my mind I remember the physcology of a tidy room equalling a tidy mind. At the moment, I feel I have a tidy mind, but how long that will be the case is anyone’s gues. I usually keep on top of it, but I’ve let it slide, and sometimes, although rarely, I actually enjoy a messy room. Perhaps it’s in part rebellion, but it’s just because the messier it is (as long as it’s not overwhelming) the more satisfying it is to tidy. But then again, I’ve always liked organising and putting things back in their proper place. So it’s definitely on my to-do list.
Anyway, that’s it for this short update. I’ll check in with you all soon. Stay safe and as always, if you ever want to message, I’m here.
(Also I have no idea what this photo is, it’s a little odd lol)

#8 Long time, no see
27/10/2020
Firstly, my apologies for not uploading recently, I hit a massive motivational slump on everything uni related, and so I didn’t have any content to upload. I’m starting to catch up and get back onto the horse, so hopefully we’ll be back to fairly regular posts again.
I want to dedicate this post to methods I’ve been using to recuperate the lost motivation; something I know we all struggle with it from time to time.
Take a break - This one seems counter intuitive, but most of the time when we hit a slump it’s, at least in part, due to overworking. Or more specifically in my case, going from nothing to everything all in one go. Take some time to yourself, doing what you like (at least for a bit) and don’t feel guilty about it.
Get some exercise - Admittedly whilst exercise is not my strongest asset, I’ve really enjoyed going for walks around my village with my sister. Whilst walking may seem boring, I’ve heard it’s one of the best kinds of exercise, and I find it’s wonderful to appreciate your surroundings by taking some time to breathe and be mindful. Yesterday, I went on one of my best walks of the year. There was a stunning sunset, low lying fog, and the most beautiful barn owl swooped in front of us about 3 times. It was like it wanted us to follow it, and it really magical. In getting out and about, you’ll be open to these unexpected surprises.
Get some sleep - Easier said than done. This is by farrrrrr my biggest challenge because naturally I’m a night owl. I’ve tried to reinforce some new positive habits, such as being off my phone more before bed, and instead picking up a book. I said I wanted to read Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, and so I have been, now almost half way through. It’s quite slow progress I suppose, but I’m all about mindful reading and not taking a good book for granted. Little and often is also key, and you’ll be surprised by how much you’ll achieve. I certainly do need to apply this to my work though lol.
Clean - I know this may not work for everybody but I really enjoy that feeling of a fresh space. Whether that means washing your covers, or tidying and dusting your workspace, it will help bring forward a positive and motivated mindset to get back to work.
Inspiration - I heard one of my now favourite quotes the other week; ‘never underestimate the amount of motivation you can get from watching Legally Blonde’. Truly inspirational I know. So whether you watch that film, find study with me or study vlogs on Youtube or scroll through your studyblr feed, I can almost guarantee it will reignite that “I can do this” attitude for work.
Tough love - Sometimes, you just need to force yourself to just do it. This has been the case with myself recently, in getting a little too relaxed. It doesn’t mean chucking yourself in to the hardest task though. I’ve analysed my to do list and am taking things slowly to build back up. This has meant my first assignment due in a few weeks on a back burner because I’ve felt more inclined to do things I’ll enjoy more, such as working on a piece of work for an exhibition and merely only thinking about my assignment as mental encouragement to eventually get started.
I hope these few methods I use to get back on track help you out too. Whatever stage you’re at with your own academic life, just know that you are killing it! I’m proud of you. Some progress is always better than none, and you won’t go far wrong.
That’s it for today’s little comeback, and I’ll see you all soon!

#7 The Aftermath of my day...
10/11/2020
Whilst I strive to keep a relatively organised and tidy desk, today resulted in this... whilst some may perhaps say masterpiece, I think war-zone is far more apt. I do believe though, that it’s okay to embrace a messy desk every once in a while! These things happen and they are slightly beautiful when they do, as you can reorganise after which is a great feeling.
Dissertation Supervisor Meeting Update
Firstly, the aforepromised (is that a word? Who knows, it is now) update regarding my supervisor meeting in the morning. Whilst I did get slated for my proposal writing style (which was far from correctly academic, although I should add it didn’t have to be) he did offer some relevant advice in terms of where I take my research next, and pointers on that level, in expanding my thoughts. If I’m completely honest, I never know where I stand with him, and whilst some advice was contradictory to what we were told in our dissertation module seminars, I believe his heart is in the right place. I am determined not to let it wobble my confidence, and to be fair I am excited to see where my work takes me, even if it’s more than a little daunting. I still think that I will be going to my dissertation course module leader if I ever need an emotional boost or anything clarified, as I have known her for longer and she has a much more personable attitude in terms of helpfulness by always being positive and reassuring. Perhaps I’m over sharing a little, but I think its important to be honest, and these posts are kind of my public diary entries regarding my dissertation. Anyhow, I survived and will get back to it. Ideally we’re supposed to have a draft of some part of the dissertation by the end of November, in some kind of generic timeline, and so I am (loosely) striving towards that. I want a chapter done maybe, as then that will be like a quarter of the thing out of the way.
My day
Whilst starting slow, it gradually got better. I Nigella Lawson’s signed recipe book for my dad’s Christmas present be delivered. I pre-ordered it in February so its nice to finally see it lol. And then to top it off, my Whittards of Chelsea order came. I almost ran out of coffee which would have been nothing short of a catastrophe, and this order contained lots of goodies from hot chocolate to oodles of their limited edition Christmas/Festive coffee; my favourite. The ones on my desk above are mainly for presents, but I have a tonne downstairs in the kitchen. My mum keeps getting increasingly annoyed with me as I have taken over the top of the fridge with my ‘coffee box’ full of various mugs and coffee/hot drink related items but it’s one of my passions and so I am unapologetic about it. Besides we always share the coffee when I make it so she can’t complain too much. If anyone wants me to do more coffee related posts/thoughts then do message me or let me know.
Media
In the evening there was a non-stop (almost) shop of things I watched. Firstly was the Apple event. Oh my gosh, perhaps it’s time to admit I am an Apple fanboy, but I fully had a nerd moment when they were explaining the benefits of the new M1 chip in their updated Macs. Anyway I was an avid watcher as I always am and it was definitely a highlight of my day.
I also watched the Great British Bake Off. The only thing I can say on this, is that thank goodness my favourite person did not go home.
Finally, I watched a Christmas film on Netflix called Christmas with the Coopers. Now, either I’m horribly late to the party with this film, or it is massively under appreciated. It is an early role of Timothée Chalamet, which was a big surprised when I saw him there, but the overall story was what made it special. It was, for me, the perfect balance between humour, with some bits really making me laughing aloud, and a wonderful sincere and sentimental tone that I equally enjoyed. It had some romance, but wasn’t the forefront of the action. It’s definitely being added to my list of ones to watch every year. The best way to describe it would be like a similar style to Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway because of it tracking lots of peoples lives all at once, and then them all meeting together at a family Christmas party/get together. As I say, definitely worth a watch if you haven’t had the chance to see it yet.
And that’s it for this post! Oof I wrote quite a lot so if you’ve got this far I do appalude you! As always, do message about anything if you want to, and stay safe!

#6 A different perspective
09/11/2020
Now reading week is over, I had my first online seminar today. Whilst the screenplay we were studying I found terribly mundane, we discusssed how it was a deliberate ploy by the author, who then directed the film. It was also my turn this week to submit into a discussion group. This was slightly nerve wracking with people voicing their thoughts on my work, but I know everyone and so it wasn’t too bad. It was reassuring to hear positive feedback, be able to ask questions for advice, and also give feedback on others (which I do weekly anyway).
It was the first time today that I felt a need to sit on my bed, instead of at my desk for it. I also made myself a coffee to enjoy whilst having the 2 hour class, and made it much more bearable being in comfort. Plus, I’m sure you’ll all enjoy a different view to my usual desk perspective!
Now for what I’ve recently watched and that’s Netlix’s adaptation of Rebecca. Whilst admittedly I’ve not read the novel, even though it is currently on my shelf and I keep meaning to, I must say in comparison to the 1940’s Hitchcock film, it was very well done, as they both struck similar tones. As such, I will be taking it off my shelf imminently. I loved the locations (although more on this later) and especially the actors and actresses. Lily James has that lovely nievaty of hers that comes through at the beginning, and aptly changes and morphs into self-assuredness as the story unfolds. Anyone who knows the story knows that this is very important, and quite emotive. Maxim de Winter, played amazingly by our heartthrob Armie Hammer, conclusively reveals that he never loved Rebecca, and his wife’s efforts to be like her because she thinks he still loves her, backfire. Thus the moral du Maurier incorporates, and one we should all strive to remember, is to just be yourself. Changing yourself into someone else never ends well. This is especially emphasised by the fact De Winter’s second wife (the one played by Lily James) is never named which is all the more tragic. Keeley Hawes, who I simply adore, is also in it briefly and ugh I loved every moment. And Mrs Danvers, played by Dame Kristin Scott Thomas, was incredible. Sheer perfection. I have many other thoughts, but for breifety I’ll leave it there. I did feel Manderley’s exterior could have been chosen better, but it served it’s purpose. If anyone does want to share their thoughts on the adaption then please do message me!
Tomorrow I have my first dissertation tutorial with my supervisier, so that will be... interesting. I’m not apprehensive, but I’ve not stuck the right chord yet with him as a lecturer, and so tomorrow will determine how I feel. I’m certainly going in with an open mind, and at the end of the day whilst personal relationship is important, I’d also sacrifice some of that for interesting and in depth feedback regarding my topic. I’ll keep all of you updated on how it goes!
I hope everyone is well, and as I said earlier, and always do, please feel free to message me :)

#5 I return!
04/11/2020
Oof. Well, firstly, I hope everyone had a good Halloween despite the ongoing pandemic having changed this years quite a bit. Personally, I didn’t get up to much, but me and my siblings did make an effort to watch some scary movies so it was a pretty fun evening. Also yesterday we finished The Hautning of Bly Manor which was actually a reallly good series and I loved the additional small storylines that they decided to add. Definitely worth a watch. I feel like my only criticism would be that it wasn’t as scary in comparison to The Haunting of Hill House, going against my preconceptions, but I did enjoy the more psychological aspects that were employed throughout. The US election was and still is 100% scarier ngl. And we still don’t know the winner. I can’t quite fathom how involved I am considering I’m British but with every bone in my body do I hope Trump is removed. Anyway I have no aspirations of merging with political tumblr so we’ll leave that there lol.
In other news I cannot believe its November! The weeks are sliding by and I feel sort of dizzy with how fast the year is coming to a close. I made the Christmas cake with my grandma the other day, and even on the eve of a month long national lockdown, I still feel the Christmas spirit starting to well up inside of me. It’s exciting, even though this year will be very different.
Now my thoughts are out there, its time for what most of you will be expecting. What I’ve been up to academically. I suppose I can say that I’ve taken an fairly big break given the short productivity streak I was on, having lost energy and reaching reading week. That being said, I have been doing little and often. My latest project was reworking my CV having been given some pointers by my teacher and so I’ve sent a second draft to her to review. This photo is of that. It was tedious but I’m glad it’s done. I’ve also booked a tutorial with my dissertation supervisor to discuss my proposal and so hopefully that will go well. I’m a little apprehensive because I haven’t clicked with him in comparison to some of my other course leaders who I would have preferred but this could be a blessing in disguise, and his published research is relatively similar to my topic.
That’s about it folks! I hope that everyone’s November is going well so far. As the nights draw after the clocks have changed, I hope everyone stays cozy, warm and safe regardless of what happens in the world. And as always, if anyone wants to message me about anything, do feel free :)

#4 Proposal Submitted
27/10/2020
I was meant to post this yesterday but got side tracked oops. I submitted my dissertation proposal in the morning which felt like a huge weight taken off my shoulders, as well as being a first step towards the final thing. The image is of my desk after I’d finished. Not winning any aesthetic points, but definitely some study ones. Fortunately there was no word count for my proposal as I had a lot of ideas to communicate but it was good to get everything down.
In the afternoon I went into uni for a class, which made a change from online lessons, even if the seminar was a little meh. My uni is doing an “every other week” approach, meaning one week I’m in for classes and the next I’m at home. I quite like this though because even though it’s a hassle having to get in rather than just being at my desk, I enjoy the change of scene and makes me feel more productive. After the class I popped into Starbucks for a treat, although they’d run out of pumpkin spice. The sheer audacity. Instead I settled on a caramel latte.
To relax and turn off for a bit I watched the first episode of The Haunting of Bly Manor on Netflix with my siblings. We aim to complete it whilst my sister’s home for reading week. I studied the source text story The Turn of the Screw by Henry James in my first and second years of uni so it was interesting in comparing the episode to that, and also to the other productions I’ve seen. So far I’m impressed, but with the other episodes to go it’s early days. I also watched Us, written and directed by Jordan Peele. I’m studying his screenplay Get Out in my script/screenplay class and so watching another one of his works was interesting. Of course I was terrified pretty much the whole time and did not foresee the end, but I was reeling at how clever it was. Fair to say I did not relax or turn off much, but it’s spooky season and I enjoyed the evening. Take some time for yourself because you probably deserve a break and do something you enjoy. It will help re-energise you and prevent you from burning out.
Today I had a relatively chilled day to recouperate from some late nights working and a busy weekend. Later the Great British Bake Off is on which I’m looking forward to terribly. I also have an online workshop set up by my Uni which will be informative having a guest speaker in.
Stay safe everyone, and as always, if anyone wants to message me feel free :)

#3 Productive day
25/10/2020
Although I’m posting this the day after, I just wanted to let you guys know what I achieved yesterday.
Normally I don’t have very good productivity resilience, that is to effectively say I have a short attention span lol. It’s one of the things that I definitely need to improve upon, but I was pretty proud of myself yesterday by managing to continue my dissertation proposal and get it about 2/3rds completed as well as update my CV which I’m going to be honest was a dire, and daunting, task on my to-do list. The photo, although a little rough, was my set up last night. I got into the ‘flow state’ (a rare occurrence) and wrote a lot which was really good. Even though in comparison to other studyblrs it may not seem like you personally come close to their levels of productivity, only compare you to yourself. For me, I always feel both impressed and a little demoralised when I see the productivity of others, so I have to escape that mindset and focus only on me. I know the work I did yesterday was a lot of progress and I’m proud of myself for that. I recognise my achievement as a step to improve upon rather than something that can’t be changed. I hope that this blog will be testament to that when I can look back and see just how far I’ve progressed, as well proving that if I can improve then anyone can!
That’s it until next time, and as always, always feel free to message me about anything :)

#2 Peep the desk setup!
23/10/2020
Hello all! Updates!
Whilst time did slip past me faster than I was expecting, do not fear because my second post is here!
I’m sure anyone seeking inspiration, is in the studyblr community or interested in organisation wants to know more about my desk (pictured) than what I was actually up to and so we’ll get to that first.
Desk:
The desk itself was from the British department store John Lewis although I’m not sure if they sell this exact colour anymore. I love it because of all the cubby holes and best of all, the workspace slides in and out, like a bureau (that took a while to spell) meaning it’s perfect for either just placing my laptop on or pulling all the way out if I have a lot of papers or I’m doing my scrapbook for example. Most crucial of all is that it’s *space saving* which is really useful when not in use. I shall now list the cubby hole uses:
I have one cubby to keep important papers that I need now (before getting filed) and information I may need to access quickly.
I have a space dedicated to my letter opener, a box of scrapbook stuff (basically clutter lol) and my tape dispenser furthest away from me when I sit because that’s the stuff I use least often.
My top middle one is dedicated to my pencil case (from Wouf in case anyone is also a big cat fanatic or just interested), easy access random paper to jot down things, thoughts or ideas, and my post it note holder, with a stapler behind.
In the drawer I keep said things, thoughts and ideas, scissors and memory sticks.
The top left includes my 5 year prompt journal that is very behind and normally my to-do list pad which is currently sat on the desk.
Below that I have where my laptop wire comes out from as well as a play we’re studying in uni and highlighters need, although these would normally be in my pencil case. This is pretty minimal for me, and I have more supplies I use less often as well as stationary in other places off to the side.
Above my desk I just have some aesthetically pleasing ornaments and a plant I recently bought, although that’s not the best photo of it. If anyone’s interested in a plant tour post then do let me know as I have a lot. I have the Newton’s cradle simply because it’s essential for every desk (*cough cough* it’s not), a big cat sculpture ornament, my secondary phone/watch charging station, a space where there used to be a plant but I moved it, and of course my lamp. It’s one of those flexible ones from IKEA.
What I got up to:
Essentially in this photo I was annotating a short script by one of my classmates. I did basic annotations and then followed up with a lot more detail in an email sent to them. I am using my iPad Pro (not the latest one) and writing my annotations with the Apple Pencil as I feel, and have been told, it’s more personal which I think is a nice touch.
My to-do list is sat to the side and that’s pretty self-exclamatory lol.
I’ve also been working towards my dissertation proposal (not pictured) and that’s coming along nicely. It’s due next week as a formative requirement i.e not graded, to essentially confirm a working title, methodology, why we chose our topic and aims so we can be paired with a supervisor familiar, or best suited for, our topic (we can but hope).
If you’ve read this far, then I applaud you. Bonus tidbit of info: the fact I was studying in the day time is a bit of a shocker. I normally prefer to work in the evening.
If anyone has any questions or just wants to have a chat then feel free to message me!

It’s official!
20/10/2020
This is my first post, I hope of many!
Above you can see a (rather late night) set up of me reading an article for my dissertation! I’ve read half of it and will finish it tomorrow. My proposal is due in around a week and so I’m working on it slowly but surely. Fortunately it’s just a requirement and therefore isn’t graded, but I am a perfectionist and so want to get it to be the best it can be. I aim to keep a record of my last year of uni studying, as a kind of public record of what I did when I look back and also to keep me motivated going forward because it’s going to be a tough year ahead.
I’m still getting used to Tumblr and how to work everything, so you may have to bear with me, but I’m determined to keep a studyblr for anyone interested. I can’t promise clockwork content, but I’ll be uploading regularly (we can but hope). Hold me to it lol.

I struggle with procrastination a lot, and I think a lot of people do. I want to try and overcome it and my self discipline is truly atrocious. I read a wonderful quote by Dickens today, ‘Never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time’. It resounds so much with me for it is so true. Let’s savour time and feel great when we actually do things without putting them off!
Procrastinating? Don’t stress!
We all get to that point where we realize we’ve not done anything for the day. I’m here to remind you do not stess about procrastination.Feeling anxious and getting down on yourself for not working doesn’t help. Here are some tips:
If it’s late, and you are tired, work for 10-15 minutes.
This will allow you to get things sorted for a fresh start tomorrow, and you can go to bed feeling accomplished, without the stressful butterflies that often accompany procrastination.
If you’ve really gotten behind, make a prioritized to do list.
If you find yourself procrastinating often and you reach a point of panic where it feels like EVERYTHING needs to be done right away, the best thing you can do is organize your tasks. I find the Eisenhower decision matrix (google it, it’s amazing) really great for situations like these.
Don’t know where to start on a project or paper? Ask for help!
Anxiety can make us feel stressed and unwilling to begin an assignment. I cannot stress this enough! Your professors and teachers WANT to help you! If you have a paper due and you are feeling overwhelmed, don’t know where to start your research, etc., remember, this is their field of expertise.
Work on self discipline
This is absolutely the most crucial step to stopping the procrastination cycle. There are lots of posts that tell you to motivate yourself by offering rewards for completing tasks but all of that is meaningless if you don’t have the discipline to stick to it. Start small. When you are about to do something anyways, be concious of it, be concious of the fact that you have decided to do a task, and are doing it. Once it’s done, take note of how you feel. Do you feel relaxed? Relieved? Proud of yourself? (you should feel proud you are amazing) Accomplished? Then when you have a task you don’t want to do, just say to yourself “I am going to do _____ for _____ amount of time, or until it is done.” It takes a lot of work to get into the habit of self discipline but it is really the best reward in the long run.

This was pretty useful. I learnt things, especially about paying attention in lectures and things as that’s something I noticed I struggle with.
🌼🌻study smarter🌻🌼
(here are some study tips straight from my psych notes)
1. interest: the brain prioritizes by meaning, value, and relevance so u remember things better if ur interested
find a study partner
do extra practice or research
teach it to someone else (this works so well!)
2. intent: be actively paying attention. very little learning actually takes place without attention
use a concentration check sheet (every time u get distracted, put a check on ur sheet. this is supposed to program ur mind to pay attention)
while u read, talk back to the author
ask questions during lectures (this is scary ik!! but do it!)
3. basic background: make connections to what u already know
preview and skim the material before u read it. or google it!
write out a list of vocab words before a lecture and leave some spaces between them to fill in during the lecture
read ahead of lectures
watch crashcourse tbh
4. selectivity: start by studying whats important
look for bolded words, graphics, pictures, chapter review questions in ur readings
listen for verbal clues like emphasis and repetition during lectures
make urself a study guide as u read and write down questions for urself to answer later as review (kinda like cornell notes)
5. meaningful organization: u can learn/rmr better if u group ideas into diff categories
apply vocab words to ur life
make flashcards and sort them (try not to have more than seven items in one category!)
use mnemonics
6. recitation: saying ideas aloud in ur own words strengthens synaptic connections! when u say something aloud u r forcing urself to pay attention
after u read, ask urself questions
talk abt what u learned w/ classmates outside of class
again, teach someone else
7. visualization: ur brain’s quickest and longest-lasting response is to images
convert info into a chart or graph
draw it out
make a mental video of a process
look at picture/video examples
8. association: memory is increased when facts are consciously associated w something u already know. memory = making neural connections
ask urself: is this something i already know?
9. consolidation: give ur brain some time to establish a neural pathway
make a list of what u remember from class
review notes at the end of the day, every day
stop after reading each prg to write a question in ur notes
make ur own practice quiz
10. distributed practice: we all know cramming doesnt work but we do it anyway! but yeah short and frequent study sections work better
make a daily/weekly study schedule
create a time budget/time tracker (track everything ur doing for a week and see how u can be more efficient w/ the time u waste)
divide the reading/vocab by the number of days before an exam and do a little bit each day (u can use sticky notes to divide ur reading)
other tips:
stop stressing! this sounds stupid and it isnt going to be easy, but anxiety causes u to lose focus. try ur best to think positively. sleep a lot. minimize ur caffeine intake. take a walk maybe
when u need to remember something, look upward or close ur eyes (when ur eyes are open ur using visual parts of ur brain that u might not need to be using)
find a rival! (like the person right above u in class rank) secretly compete w/ them (envy can improve mental persistence bc it makes u focus more intensely) but dont overdo it!
walking and sleeping build memory storage in ur brain
eat flavonoids! (grapes, berries, tea leaves, cocoa beans make neurons in the brain more capable of forming new memories + increase blood flow to the brain)
obstacles force ur brain to try harder, so space learning lessons apart or create a puzzle to solve or change ur physical setting

Despite talking about (I think) first year in an American University, having just started my induction week in the UK at university, some of these points really reinforced my way to approach the new way of life. Advice based off real experience is very helpful. Don’t take it for granted.
Tumblr media
I’m now entering my third semester of my second year college, and I think I’ve gathered enough experience in college to give relevant tips to incoming freshmen or just regular old college students. I’m not an expert in getting all As, not getting those 4.0s in every subject, but I have maintained my place as a Dean’s Lister since my first sem freshmen year, so I think I do have an idea on what I’m talking about. Feel free to take my advice! (or not).
homework/projects 1. seriously, once you get information on your homework/project, start them immediately. DO NOT wait till last minute to complete them because you will regret it. Do them as soon as the professor assigns it to you so you won’t spend the next few weeks stressing out on the amount of homework you have.
2. start creative projects first. unless you can pull creativity out of your hat whenever you need it, I highly suggest you start creative projects as soon as  you get them because trust me when I say you do not want to be decorating/designing shit when the due date is tomorrow.
3. do your best in every assignment; trust me, the points will count at the end of the semester.
4. do extra credit work and treat it as priority work; excess points are cushion points.
5. group projects suck but here’s a good rule to keep in mind: if you’re the leader, delegate those tasks (read up on division of labor). if you’re a group member, do the delegated task as best as you can. know your goal as a group; are you guys in it to get to know each other and build rapport? then the output won’t matter as much and focus on helping and getting to know each other. Is the output the most important part? Then be real with each other; if you can’t do this task, then don’t do it & instead give it to someone else. Some may not even get any work at all, because what matters is the output.
friends/other people/professors 1.  keep your circle small. your friends are there to guide you, support you and tell you when you’re wrong. find the crowd you vibe with the most because trust me, the right friends are medicine to all college problems
2. those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. keep that in mind, my dear.
3. love the professor? do your best in their class. hate the professor? do your best in their class. it doesn’t matter whether you hate the prof or not; they still hold your grade at the end of the semester. if you really can’t stand them, just think of it as training your ability to be humble (and not punch someone).
4. talk to your professors. they’re not as bad as you think they are.
5. seriously, go to their consultation hours when you think you’re failing.
class/notes 1. TAKE NOTES. cannot emphasize this enough. don’t rely on anyone to take your notes for you; it’s your education, it’s time you take responsibility for it.
2. sit in front of class if you believe you’ll get distracted if you sit in the back.
3. talk to your seatmate! you’ll need them when you get sick and can’t come to class.
4. again, TAKE NOTES. don’t photograph the slide. write that shit down, or type it if you don’t want to write. bottom line, don’t picture it.
5. revise, revise, revise. if you want to understand the material, a good way to go about it is to revise your notes in a way YOU can understand.
having fun/relationships 1. have fun! i was too stressed when I was a freshman all because I focused too much on getting 4.0s. It’s possible to get 4.0s and still have fun! having fun doesn’t need to be about drinking (although if it is, then stay safe doing it!) it could be reading a book or hanging out with your friends, whatever works for you and keeps your mind off school for awhile.
2. it’s okay to have crushes! they could be your inspiration (but don’t let them be your distraction)
3. talk to that cute guy you’ve been classmates with ever since February who you can’t stop looking at. you’ve got nothing to lose.
4. relationships are a good source of support, love and care but pls don’t forget your friends.
5. learn how to have fun, and college will be easier.
Reminder: having fun does not equal to slacking off.
I guess that’s it! If you guys want more tips/advice/academic or college realted, I can write more or you can just hit up my ask!

Currently debating getting textbooks for my English course. There are so many needed, the cost racks up. I’m undecided to get them and be done with it or wait and hope I don’t need them but get only the ones I need when this term begins. 🧐 Anyway, this could be helpful for people with textbook problems. Hope it helps!
here’s the truth about textbooks
i keep seeing posts out there saying that you need to read the textbook to succeed in class. NO. you do not need to read the textbook. at least not for many, if not most, of your classes. first of all, it’s impractical. profs can assign up to 2-3 a week, and if you’re taking around 4-5 classes, that’s a WHOLE LOT of reading. if you have time to do so, go ahead, but a lot of students don’t have that much time on their hands. so i’m suggesting that you DON’T need to read every single chapter your prof assigns. what you DO need to do is to get smarter at selecting what and when to read, as well as scanning the text effectively.
when TO read the textbook
when your profs tell you that they will not be teaching from the textbook but that the exams will cover material and/or questions from the textbook
when the material is difficult, tricky, or lengthy and you need clarification, further explanation, or examples
when you miss a class
when you HAVE TIME to prepare for lectures in advance
when you feel that you actually learn and retain information better by reading the textbook
when NOT to read the textbook
when your profs teach from the textbook pretty much line by line
when your profs tell you that they will not be assessing you based on information from the text, but from their lectures
a strong implication of this is if your profs require lecture attendance
when you feel that reading the textbook does not help you learn or retain information
when you are constantly confused by the textbook (esp when it comes to calculation-based stem classes like math or cs)
when you have absolutely no time whatsoever to read pages after pages of bad academic puns
what you can do INSTEAD of reading the textbook
look at the course syllabus/schedule to see what you will learn in lecture. have an idea of what material you’ll be covering, then do the following steps.
check the course website/resources and ask yourself: what do you have to work with? are there lecture slides? lecture notes from previous semesters? online links or readings?
if one of the above exists, read the lecture slides/notes. they are usually much less text-intensive and get straight to the point. you can zip through them pretty quickly. you will at least have a basic understanding of the material that will be introduced in class.
google terms and concepts that you don’t understand from just reading the lecture slides. again, the idea is to get you to have a basic understanding of the material and not become an expert. this will help you avoid getting lost during the lecture.
if you’re still a little confused, read selected sections from the textbook that deal with the topic you need more help with. please don’t read the entire thing.
if there are no lecture slides or external resources to help you out, scan the textbook effectively.
how to SCAN textbooks effectively
read the chapter title and section headings
read the highlighted, bolded, or italicized terms and concepts, as well as their respective definitions in the content itself, the margins, and/or the index at the back
google the terms and concepts if you’re still confused
examine any charts, graphs, or flowcharts
examples and example questions can be helpful, so pay attention to those
at the end of each chapter there should be a brief summary or main idea section. read those and do the practical problems if possible.
