The Swashbuckler by Madison Cawein Squat-nosed and broad, of big and pompous port; A tavern visage, apoplexy haunts, All pimple-puffed: the Falstaff-like resort Of fat debauchery, whose veined cheek flaunts A flabby purple: rusty-spurred he stands In rakehell boots and belt, and hanger that Claps when, with greasy gauntlets on his hands, He swaggers past in cloak and slouch-plumed hat. Aggression marches armies in his words; And in his oaths great deeds ride cap-à-pie; His looks, his gestures breathe the breath of swords; And in his carriage camp all wars to be:— With him of battles there shall be no lack While buxom wenches are and stoops of sack. https://www.instagram.com/p/ClI9GtfOas1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 6 November • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1696, the Piracy Trial against the captured members of Henry Every’s crew concluded at Old Bailey in London. Six defendants had been captured and indicted on charges of committing piracy on the high seas against the Grand Mughal Aurangzeb’s treasure ship, Ganj-i-Sawai. Joseph Dawson, Edward Forseith, William May, William Bishop, James Lewis, and John Sparkes stood in front of an assembly of the most prominent judges in the country, with all but one - Joseph Dawson - claiming their innocence and pleading not guilty. Despite considerable pressure on the jury to find the defendants guilty, with Judge Advocate of the Admiralty Dr Sir Thomas Newton reminding the jury that the consequences of an acquittal would be "the total loss of the Indian trade, and thereby the impoverishment of this kingdom," the jury passed a verdict of not guilty. In an unprecedented move, the shocked Court scrambled to raise another indictment, and twelve days later the pirates would stand once again in court; this time on the charge of mutiny, for their role in assisting Henry Every with conspiracy to steal the Charles II. . . . . . https://www.instagram.com/p/CkqVJtLrHP-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 30 October • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1697, Captain William Kidd strikes and kills one of his own crewman aboard the Adventure Galley. William Kidd had accepted a privateering commission from William III of England to seek out and attack pirates, including such familiar names as Thomas Tew, William Mays, John Ireland, and Thomas Wake. When the voyage got off to an inconceivably slow and unsuccessful start, many members of the crew aboard Adventure Galley became rightfully disgruntled, as they had agreed to be paid by the prizes they captured. It wasn’t long before many of them became vocal about mutiny and going “on the account” as pirates. Many more of them openly pressured Kidd to take any prizes they came across, despite the stipulations outlined in the commission. On the morning of the 30th, a Dutch ship appeared on the horizon. Kidd’s gunner, William Moore, was on deck sharpening a chisel when the potential prize was spotted. Moore openly urged Kidd to attack the Dutch vessel, an act that would have been considered outright piracy. Kidd refused, calling Moore a lousy dog "If I am a lousy dog, you have made me so; you have brought me to ruin and many more,” the gunner retorted. In a fury, Capt Kidd heaved an iron-bound bucket at Moore, striking him in the head and fracturing his skull. William Moore would die of the injury the very next day. . . . . . #piratehistory #piratehistorypodcast #redseapirates #captainkidd #adventuregalley #piratesvoyage #pirates #historyofpiracy #privateer #thisdateinpiratehistory #piratelife https://www.instagram.com/p/CkWn33Npc5P/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 23 October • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1718, while cruising off Long Island, Charles Vane captured a brigantine and sloop bound from Jamaica to New England. Charles Vane had been patrolling for prizes off Charleston, when they discovered Col. Thomas Rhett was in the area in search of pirates, namely Stede Bonnet and his crew. Feigning a move to the south to put Rhett off his trail, Vane instead turned north and ducked into an inlet to lay low, coincidentally running into Blackbeard, who happened to also be in the area. There they rested for several weeks with Blackbeard and his company, before finally weighing anchor and heading north toward New York, where they would eventually come upon and take the New England-bound prizes. . . . . . #piratehistory #piratehistorypodcast #piratesofthecaribbean #pirateship #pirate #pirates #charlesvane #blacksails #piratecaptain #blackbeard https://www.instagram.com/p/CkD9eJkrxar/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 21 October • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1520, explorer and navigator Ferdinand Magellan discovers the Strait that would later bear his name. After quelling a potentially vicious mutiny at Port St. Julian earlier in the year, Magellan and his Armada de Molucca continued sailing south along the coast of Argentina. Probing every estuary, Magellan hoped to discover the passage that would lead his crew through Terra Firma and into the Pacific Ocean. On the 21st of October, the small Armada rounded Cabo Virgenes and entered the passage that proved to be the Strait that he was seeking. With the San Antonio having deserted the expedition, the remaining three ships made their way through the winding waterway until they finally reached the other side. When the Pacific Ocean finally came into view, the always stoic Magellan reportedly broke down and cried with tears of joy. . . . . . . #piratehistory #piratehistorypodcast #pirates #explorer #circumnavigation #straitofmagellan #armadademolucca #ferdinandmagellan #victoria #pirateship #thisdateinpiratehistory https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj_d1MkrNk8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 7 September • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1695, Henry Every captured the Gang-i-Sawa’i, a treasure-laden prize owned by the Grand Moghul of India. Henry Every had heard of Thomas Tew’s success in the Red Sea, and he wanted to replicate that success for himself. In 1693, Tew had captured a Ghanja dhow worth over £100,000 in gold and silver, along with ivory, spices, and valuable gemstones. Every put together a small armada for this endeavor, including Tew and his ship Amity, along with several consorts that included Richard Want, William Mays, Thomas Wake, and Joseph Faro. Together, they planned to intercept a 25-ship pilgrim fleet returning from the Hajj - the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. After sitting idle in the Red Sea for weeks, Every discovered that the convoy had passed them by. Desperate to salvage the voyage, the pirates sailed as quickly as they could in hopes of catching up with the last ships. Every’s Fancy was the fastest in his fleet, and several ships - including Tew’s - eventually fell behind. As they neared Surat, the Fancy caught up to and captured the merchant ship Fateh Muhammad. Along with a prize of roughly £60,000, the pirates learned that only one ship from the convoy remained at sea - the 700-ton, sixty gun Mughal flagship, Ganj-i-Sawa’i. And it wasn’t long before she appeared on the horizon. When the Fancy was in range, the ships began trading broadsides. In a stroke of luck, a cannon on the Ganj-i-Sawa’i exploded, killing many and causing mass confusion on deck. The pirates took this advantage to board and capture the ship, fighting with cutlasses and small arms before the Mughal crew finally surrendered. The loot from the Ganj-i-Sawa’i totaled somewhere between £200,000 and £600,000, including 500,000 pieces of gold and silver; the largest sea-based haul in the history of piracy. The raid would make Henry Every the most wanted man in the world, with the Grand Mughal and East India Company launching the first global manhunt in history. . . . . https://www.instagram.com/p/CiNcz9PO3OZ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 6 September • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1522, Juan Sebastian Elcano completed the first successful circumnavigation of the world. The famous voyage, initially commanded by Portuguese navigator and explorer Ferdinand Magellan, began on 20 September 1519, with the aim of finding a western maritime route to the Spice Islands. Sponsored by Spain, and funded in part by King Charles, Magellan put together five ships - called the Armada de Molucca - and hired 270 mariners to crew them. After Magellan was killed in a battle with the Mactan Indians in the Philippines, and his successors were murdered by the Cebu Indians immediately thereafter, Juan Sebastian Elcano - who was captain of the Victoria - ended up in command of the remainder of the fleet, which by this point consisted solely of the Victoria. When it limped into port at Sanlucar de Barrameda on the Guadalquivir River, the Victoria carried Elcano and only eighteen men from the original 270 that began the voyage. The expedition itself had been a success, if measured by the fact that they had successfully found a western route to the Spice Islands, and returned with a cargo hold full of cinnamon and clove. After the voyage, Juan Sebastian Elcano was received by King Charles, and was granted an augmentation to his family coat of arms. It featured a world globe and the words ‘Primus circumdedesti me,’ (Latin: “You first encircled me.”) . . . . . . https://www.instagram.com/p/CiLpiW4LJws/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
