Unpopular opinion: I hate how the fandom wants Will Solace to have dangerous plague powers. Will's character is about him lacking in fighting abilities. Giving him plague powers would give Will the power to cause harm to enemies, which is something Will is actually insecure about NOT having. Will's character is about someone who's important because he can heal and doesn't injure others. He's able to handle himself in the middle of battle without actively harming anyone. (The sonic whistle only stuns enemies; it doesn't injure them.)
I know fans like to point out Will's insecurities, but his insecurities have always been about his lack of abilities and being reduced to only a healer. Giving him plague powers would take his character in an unnecessary and different direction.

We're interpreting incorrectly the moment when Nico claims he's leaving for good because he "doesn't fit in" and Will gets mad and says "No one pushed you away, you did that to yourself! There are people who were trying to be your friend you jerk!" (I'm paraphrasing but u remember)
Like, that wasn't Will gaslighting Nico or Rick Riordan being like "oops haha feeling like an outcast was all in Nico's head this whole time!" Despite having 5+ books where everyone talks about how creepy Nico is every time they see him
It was just how things played out from Will's perspective. It's heavily implied that Will himself wanted and tried to be Nico's friend after pjo. (Possibly he even had a crush on Nico.) That's why Will got so mad. Because he himself attempted, no doubt multiple times, to connect with Nico and got rejected or ignored. More likely flat out ignored.
So, to Will, who viewed Nico as cool and powerful and very much wanted to be his friend, it seemed that Nico was pushing him away. He didn't see from Nico's perspective how badly people were treating him.
And it's because of this I'm convinced Will had a crush on Nico before they really talked in the last book of HoO

Fanon Apollo Cabin: Kayla and Austin are perfect siblings who give Will great advice, are the voice of reason, and often take care of Will when he is struggling. They are typically plot devices for Nico and Will's relationship.
Canon Apollo Cabin: Kayla and Austin are self-absorbed human beings who who care more about their inherited talents than their father's well-being. Will often acts as the voice of reason and has to take care of the Apollo cabin since he's one of the only known descendents of Apollo who doesn't have skewed priorities.

Leo treated Nico poorly in Heroes of Olympus and didn't redeem himself since then, so I don't like Valdangelo. Jason's interactions with Nico and Leo were better than Leo and Nico's interactions.
Besides Solangelo being canon, the interactions between Nico and Will are so heartwarming and hilarious. You can see Will really cares about Nico and see why Nico is reluctantly drawn to Will.
What’s your guys’ opinions on valdangelo vs solangelo? Would love to discuss it because I’m honestly torn about how I feel about one vs the other and I’m curious what other people think.

Hot Take: If Nico didn't get a last minute love interest in Will Solace by the end of Blood of Olympus, we'd all be talking about how fucked up it is that Rick wrote all these straight relationships in Heroes of Olympus but didn't give the only confirmed queer character a love interest.
When I read House of Hades in middle school, I actually got upset that the character who suffered the most and was the most miserable also happened to be the only confirmed queer character. By contrast, when I read Hidden Oracle a couple years later, I was thrilled Nico was happier and had a boyfriend.
While I wish Solangelo was developed more, I'm glad it's something. Typically, I'd be against unnecessary romantic relationships, but for Nico I would rather he have an underdeveloped romantic relationship than nothing.

For those of you arguing Nico and Will have an unhealthy relationship because Will is Nico's doctor...
Will only refers to himself as Nico's doctor during Blood of Olympus, which is before they start dating and when Nico is on the verge of being swallowed by shadows.
Will is the best healer at Camp Half-Blood. He tends to be EVERYONE'S healer, including his dad's healer and his siblings' healer since he's the one who gives the best results.
After Nico and Will start dating, Will can compromise and let his siblings take care of Nico whenever it's reasonable. However, if Nico has a more severe case, then Will may have to step in and give him the best healing available.
I get the concern with Will being Nico's doctor. But Will is in an unusual situation where he's the best healer available, and it would be absurd to deprive Nico of the best healthcare under severe situations because they're in a relationship.

Correct me if I'm wrong. There were no Apollo campers during the winter Nico went to Camp Half-Blood in Titan's Curse. The only way for Nico to have met Will during that that season would be if Will somehow showed up to Camp Half-Blood shortly after Nico. Otherwise, they couldn't have met during Titan's Curse.
I can’t stop thinking about the fact Nico and Will could of met for the first time in the Titans curse. Like can you imagine baby Nico going to the infirmary because he scraped his knee and 11-year-old Will (who is taking his job as assistant very seriously) is told that he can treat this patient all by himself. And Nico can’t stop rambling about his day as Will sticks his tongue out in concentration just to apply a plaster. And just baby solangelo friendship!

The emotional turmoil Will was going through during his encounter with Nico during The Blood of Olympus is easy to underestimate. Think about it:
Will wants to be Nico's friend, at minimum, but Nico keeps disappearing. He must have been both angry and relieved to see Nico after Nico disappeared for months.
Will had to be worried sick that Nico could die at any minute because of Nico's poor health and the shadows threatening to overtake him.
Will must have been heartbroken when Nico said he doesn't want to go back to Camp and that no one would want to be his friend. Will probably thought he may never see Nico and was saddened by the low opinion Nico had of himself.
Will stated in Hidden Oracle he has to keep his emotions in check as Head Counselor. Will's emotions were definitely at their boiling point with Nico during The Blood of Olympus. Contrast his angry attitude with Nico during The Blood of Olympus to his more happy and chill attitude with Nico in Hidden Oracle.

If Will Solace had a crush on Nico during The Blood of Olympus, I can imagine Will being conflicted about being Nico's doctor.
On the one hand, he's concerned about abusing his authority as Nico's doctor to get closer to Nico and giving Nico favoritism when it comes to care.
On the other hand, Will Solace is the best healer, and it would be unfair to deprive Nico of the best healthcare. Furthermore, Will is likely the only person who can save Nico from being taken over by shadows.

I've seen some fans complain that Solangelo was rushed because Nico went from having horrible internalized homophobia and trauma to getting a boyfriend too quickly within the months between The Blood of Olympus and Hidden Oracle.
However, I'd argue Nico getting into relationship during the timeskip is believable because he came out to Percy and was showing signs of recovery and a crush on Will by the end of The Blood of Olympus. If he bonds with Will for many months, getting into a relationship isn't unreasonable for Nico.
The main thing that was rushed was Nico coming out to Percy and showing such quick recovery in the first place. Nico battles his hidden feelings for years to the point where it's agonizing for him to admit he had feelings for Percy in House Hades. He had to be forced out. How does he go from that mindset to willingly coming out to Percy within one book?
Where did Nico's sudden confidence come from?! You can't give Nico an angsty scene about secret gay feelings for Percy and then drop it. If Nico were supposed to start healing from his self-hatred in The Blood of Olympus, then maybe he should show hints at wanting to heal in House of Hades. Maybe Nico comes out to Jason on his own terms as a sign he wants confront his feelings. That Cupid scene made it look like Nico was nowhere near ready to come out.

the worst part about heroes of olympus is the boring roman numerals for chapter names. the weird clickbait-esque chapter titles make the pjo series.

you are, what? 12, 13 or something? it’s the middle of a monster war on manhattan and your whole cabin of siblings is being crushed by the invading army. you know it’s bad when annabeth chase and percy jackson arrive on scene, because they’re the special ops unit and they’re only sent to help in dire circumstances. and then you watch annabeth chase get stabbed. you watch percy jackson fight the minotaur, for the second time. you watch your head counselor - your leader and most skilled archer, the guy you answer to and look up to - perish as percy jackson blows up an entire bridge to stop the army from pursuit. and then percy jackson, hero of camp half blood and child of the prophecy, looks at you, one of the last campers standing. he “grabs” you, steals a motorcycle, throws you on it, and whisks you across a city of battle and chaos to get to his dying girlfriend. and then he asks you to heal annabeth chase. he is desperate like you’ve never seen before, and he places his best friend and the camp’s most admired demigod under your care. you’ve likely barely spoken to percy before, but annabeth is vital to stopping kronos, and suddenly the fate of the world is in your hands. somehow, after all that trauma, you keep calm and heal her anyway. ultimate respect to will solace.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEO VALDEZ. Counselor of Cabin Nine. Son of Hephaestus. Commander Tool Belt. Bad Boy Supreme. Hero of Olympus
(Random thing but Leo was never mentioned as wearing suspenders and white longsleeves but we draw him like that a lot. That or I might’ve missed it)
Edit: i was informed he does wear it on The lost hero after all sorry bout that! Though I think i’ll keep him with the army jacket hoho

I'll always be a sucker for Solangelo fanfics where Nico and Will take the time to bond as friends before they start dating.
I don't buy the idea of Nico and Will becoming romantic by the end those three days in infirmary after the Second Giant War.
I like the idea of a beautiful friendship blossoming during those three days and Nico realizing, "Hey, I don't mind being around this annoying Son of Apollo."
