Aoi Akane: ā€œIf only I had said I like you backā€
Tumblr media
Before we dive into this, I want to share my thoughts on Aoi and how my perception of her has changed. Initially, I understood why some people labeled her as "shallow," but now I realize how inaccurate that description is... in a way. Aoi is a deep and multilayered character deserving of way more attention. So, in this post I will mainly be focusing on her relatability, character development, and motives.
I feel like I say this at the beginning of every single one of these posts, however, I think Aoi is a very fun character to think about. I am sure a lot of the fandom relates to her:
Aoi appears sweet, naive, the typical ā€˜best-friendā€™ used to keep the plot running. Sheā€™s the popular girl! Sheā€™s like a doll; she likes romance, sheā€™s cute, sheā€™s perfect for the popular guy.
That is, until we get a short glimpse into her ā€˜real personaā€™ (a drop of her facade), in chapter 24. She wanted to tell Nene something, something which made her worried. Something which made her upset.Ā Ā
From there, we start to learn more about Aoi. There is a deep sadness and longing within her which is only revealed somewhere around the No.6 era. We start seeing her true self more. We start learning about the real Aoi, not the image she has put up for everyone. Even Nene, I want to add.
In the events of chapter 69, we (the reader) realize Aoi is neither clueless nor naive. Contrary to our assumptions, we realize that the whole time, she knew. She knew people were lying to her face,Ā  keeping secrets. Strangely, Aoi chose (and actively chooses to) ignore it. She refrains from taking action, her response is to keep up the facade.Ā Ā
In the same chapter, she says the line ā€œDad does nothing but lieā€, it feels like a throw away line but it makes me wonder. Could this be a part of the reason she feels the need to hide her low self esteem by putting up a perfect persona stem from family issues? Possibly, does she feel that being perfect makes her father like her more?Ā
This chapter provides a very deep look into Aoi. We know she feels alien. She feels as if she is a different species. Deep inside, she feels lonely. She feels as if people will like her less if sheā€™s her true self.Ā
These feelings progress into contempt, hatred. She doesnā€™t want this anymore. She starts hating people: ā€œGetting near me as you please. Becoming disappointed, then leaving me out on your own.ā€. She talks a lot about it in her monologue (here is the full thing lines):
ā€œSo stupidā€¦Akane, what do you even like about me? You always compliment me using so many words. Everytime you say those things, I wonder who you are talking about ā€˜cause I am not like that at all. You act as if you are interested in me, but you are really not. Everyone does it. They have an image of me. Based on that, they want to get close to me but when they find out the truth, they get disappointed, and ostracize me. They treat me as if I am another species. Dad always lies to me. Even Nene seems to be hiding thingsĀ  from me. And you as well, you donā€™t actually want to go out with me.ā€
Aoi believes Akane is only in love with her fake self. He doesnā€™t like her really, heā€™ll be disgusted once he finds out about her truth. To be honest, itā€™s as if someone has abandoned her in the past (or it could be everyone in general?). Told her lies, deceived her. She doesnā€™t trust people and she notices easily when someone is lying or avoiding a subject (ex. when she asked Akane why he started wearing glasses).
When Aoi attempts to walk away from Akane, she says ā€œI donā€™t want to get close to anyone anymoreā€. She is betrayed by human kind, by everyone in her life. We fully (or almost, I feel like there is more) learn the inner turmoil Aoi has been going through. That she'd rather not get close to anyone so she does not get abandoned. So people do not get the chance to hate her. Sheā€™d rather pretend to be someone else than let people get close.Ā
She canā€™t trust anyone unless she has the advantage. She refuses to show herself to anyone. Show the self which is selfish, looks down on other people, doesnā€™t share anything.Ā
When Akane calls her out, he calls her shameless, a self-righteous coward, a highly prideful individual. He sees through her facade, he has always seen through her facade. And he admits, despite all that, he loves her.Ā
ā€”--
Ah, Iā€™m finally back! I forgot the password for my Tumblr accountā€¦Iā€™ve been waiting for post this for a while now!
As always, these are my interpretations and feel free to disagree! Ps. English isnā€™t my first language.Ā

Minamoto Kou; a rant.
[As always, this will include spoilers] As we all know, the main trio of "Toilet Bound Hanako-Kun" consists of an "all-knowing" ghost with a traumatic past, a hopeless romantic exploring said ghost's past, and Kou, a 14-year-old boy in middle school. Often, in character trios like these, Kou would be the "comic relief". "Comic relief" is an immature character who jokes around while the others deal with the main issues of the plot (or, in the case of Hananene, exhibit intense romantic tension). One could perceive Kou as comic relief, and of course, who am I to judge? But, being me (a person who canā€™t help but over-analyse any piece of media I am interested in), I will offer you this rant on his character. With that being said, enjoy. š“†©šŸ’€š“†Ŗ
Tumblr media
Kou is a fun one to think about; he starts as a fairly simple character who could be perceived as a "side character" with not much to offer. Sure, heā€™s an exorcist with some insecurities, but surely itā€™s not that bad, right? Spoiler: It gets pretty deep.
One thing I like about Kou is that he is mature for his age in an accurate way; he doesnā€™t act or have the abilities of your average 14-year-old boy, but I wouldnā€™t call him "adult" (as in acting like one) either. Letā€™s talk about it: his mother passed away when he was young, and he ended up filling up her role by mostly staying inside while his brother, Teru, does most of the exorcist work. Since childhood, heā€™s been told to stay at home by his brother. In a way, I think his opinions and reality have been nurtured by Teru. He starts thinking that supernaturals are evil, etc. He, too, obviously looks up to his older brother and wants to become an exorcist like him. As he gets older, he wants to pursue more "adult" things he sees his older brother do. Itā€™s natural for kids to act that wayā€”to want to be like the people they look up to or aspire to be like.
In a way, I feel like protecting others is a way for him to cope. He wants to feel like his older brother, like a "hero," so he goes out of his way to put others before himself. Itā€™s like it makes him feel less useless, less helpless, like Teru tells him (example: Teru says Kou would be "much more helpful in the kitchen," chapter 87). You can most clearly see this in him trying hard to be useful, be it trying to save Mitsuba or minor things like his always being willing to help Yashiro (be it cooking or saving her from yet another incident). I feel like this will be important later, and so will the fact that he is in deep denial about a lot of things; he simply rejects them ("You can put him back..."). He thinks that if only heā€™d done more and tried harder, things could have turned out better. He wants people to depend on him so that he can fulfil himself and feel more confident about himself. In a way, he depends on other people to keep him more confident. I'd say. It seems like a far reach, but Iā€™d say itā€™s pretty accurate to his character or personality.
"If only he were stronger, he could save Mitsuba."
This parallels greatly with Hanako, who famously likes to excuse things with
"There is nothing that can or could be done."
I do not want to get into Hanako in this, but I feel like Kou is a great counterpart to Hanakoā€™s sort of ā€œall-knowingā€ aura he likes to put up. Another thing I like to think about is how "queer-coded" Kou is, if thatā€™s the right term for what I am trying to describe. Think about it: he was nurtured to a certain opinion by his brother Teru, so he goes out in the world believing it, but then he meets a nice supernatural (Mitsuba/Hanako), which basically flips his view of everything. And not to mention, later down the line, he tries to stand up to Teru when he tries to exercise Hanako. He gains the courage to express his opposite opinion more widely to his family (in this case, his brother), and I am a firm believer that MitsuKou, while it may not end up in a happy ending or even get any sort of romantic interactions that are confirmed to be romantic, is a code for a queer relationship that does not seem acceptable because Mitsuba is "supernatural" and Kou is "human." (which, of course, might be a far reach.)
I could rant about it for hours, but alas, this is where I stop my rambling. I hope you have enjoyed this messy rant. And as always, I do not claim that anything I wrote is a fact, as it is just my interpretation of the series (or any type of media related to it).
Tumblr media
Also, an unrelated note, but some Kou fans/TBHK fans in general need a reminder that Kou is 14. He's not your husband; he's not your whatever; be mindful of the fact that even if the minor is fictional, they're a minor.Ā
The end.
Constructive criticism and feed back all welcome. šŸŖ¦

A thought about Yashiro Nene.
[LIGHT MANGA SPOILERS] I feel like Yashiro Nene is a "teen girl" done right. There is something every teen (not only the girls) can relate to about her. Be it that they arenā€™t comfortable with their body, they are hopeless romantics, or they just feel awkward around the person they like. She was a normal high schooler who got dragged into all these crazy adventures, yet she still handles them well. A mixture of sweet, cute, and accurately immature for anyone her age. This isnā€™t talked about enough; sheā€™s an amazing protagonist.
With this, I welcome you all to my messy Yashiro rant.
Genuinely, even the main character, Yashiro Nene, is extremely overlooked. She is a girl who wants to be loved by someone attractive, to the point where she picks up hobbies just to be liked and to only be rejected by every guy she meets. She is desperate enough that she summons a literal ghost to help with the helplessness of her love life, only to still be rejected. I feel like a lot of people relate to her, whether it's growing up with model-looking bodies on TV, being someone who doesnā€™t look like that, or just feeling insecure in general. Sheā€™s a well-written character that gets reduced to "thick legs lol" and I believe that is extremely unfair. She is like a lot of teens who struggle with themselvesā€”the ones that are desperate for love and their own "hot guy" to like them "just like in the romance movies", An important aspect of her character is that sheā€™s interested in a "prince charming" but it is like she is in love with the idea of being in love, as sheā€™s willing to imagine herself with Teru, who picked up her pencil case, and denies liking Hanako on multiple occasions. She says she is "fine with anyone," but unless they fit her "prince" mold (or their version in her day-dreams does), she is not interested. In later chapters, I hope that sheā€™s able to recognise that love is not like it is in the media. (The self-awareness arc is soon, I hope.)
Ā Also, an important part of her character is that she wishes for a ā€œmore adult-like bodyā€...at 15. I will not elaborate further as you can put 2 and 2 together.Ā
I see a lot of people talking about her being annoying or immature, as if she is not a 15-year-old in her first year of high school. She is not as powerful as Kou or Hanako because she grew up like a regular child, not an exorcist or a literal school mystery, and that should be clear to everyone. She starts off somewhat clumsy, but later in the story she evolves into a more put-together character who is willing to do anything to help her friends if they are in need. (Starting from the Misaki stairs to save Aoi and then to the later chapters with Hanako and Aoi at the far shore)
Overall, I feel like she is a great main character in a darker manga like TBHK.
