I personally think that basing your interpretation of how Ursa treated Azula on Zuko’s memories shown in ‘Zuko Alone’ is kind… incorrect. You can obviously — they’re the only real images of their childhood we get in the cartoon, other than the tiniest of snapshots in sepia — and that’s fine, but for me personally I just don’t think they’re complete enough.
These memories are from Zuko’s perspective. Not Ursa’s, not Azula’s, not Ozai’s or Iroh’s—Zuko’s perspective, his memories. And they’re all about him and Ursa together: every one of these memories have Ursa at their centre. We see her protect him and be kind to him, see her be physically affectionate and gentle, see her encourage him to be kind to himself and to Azula.
They essentially tell us that Zuko is Ursa’s son first, Ozai’s son second. Ozai remains a hovering, intimidating shadow on the sidelines (we still don’t see his face, we don’t see him genuinely interact with his children, and we see him irritating his father while being a very hands-off kinda dad himself) but Ursa is fully present. And ‘Zuko Alone’ is about Zuko trying to figure out who he is: the memories show that he views being his mother’s son as an exceptionally important part of his identity, which means they are about Zuko and his relationship with Ursa alone.
They are not supposed to tell us that Ursa neglected or abused Azula emotionally—that she only focused on protecting Zuko, while leaving Azula to suffer in Ozai’s incapable hands. Sure, we see Ursa scold Zuko for acting like Azula and cuddle him right after, and we see her scold Azula for acting mean and not cuddle her right after, but the key differences here are that Zuko shows guilt after frightening the turtleducks and Azula doubles down on trying to scare Zuko. The behaviour is different and will be, by any halfway decent parent, treated differently.
I’m absolutely not saying that Azula wasn’t abused, because she 100% was. She was absolutely abused by Ozai, and I’m not ruling out that Ursa didn’t have a hand in how Azula ultimately turned out. But my point here is: these memories are far too limited and narrow for the viewer to properly determine whether Azula was treated incorrectly by Ursa.
Zuko isn’t going to remember an intimate, lovely moment between Ursa and Azula when all that’s on his mind is his identity, and how it’s entangled with his mother and what she may have sacrificed for him. Additionally, he’s not particularly fond of Azula at this moment in the show (she did kind of kickstart his being a refugee, disregarding how the audience sees this sequence of events having begun), so he’s not going to remember her fondly either. Why would Zuko try to remember Ursa’s relationship with Azula at that point, instead of his own?
(Small tidbit: we also... don't know if Ursa's last words to Azula were 'what is wrong with that child', disregarding the comics which completely ruin azula anyway. Again, the memories are from Zuko's perspective and therefore won't show any private moments between Ursa and Azula. We're not even certain whether Azulon actually ordered Ozai to kill Zuko, or if that is simply what Azula interpreted it as/thought would be funny to say--causing the sequence of events that ultimately put Ozai on the throne. But whatever)

Love when Aang and Zuko get those contrasting storylines. It takes me back to being in a college lit class, and I have an essay to slam out by tomorrow. This time it’s Aang trying to undo Jet’s brainwashing by the Dai Li versus Iroh trying to convince Zuko to settle down and make a life in Ba Sing Se. Here’s two takes in one episode on the same fuckin theme, I could write 2,000 words about that out with plenty of time to spare for not writing any of that and instead dicking around in tumblr as inside I scream and scream and scream at myself oh my god why are you on tumblr write your essay write your essay hmm a link to a little game where you dress up dolls you say

so i wrote an 8-page essay about personhood and yoo joonghyuk in omniscient reader's viewpoint for my real life seminar for a real life grade that will be on my academic record forever. why? because im insane.
read "me, myself, and i: recognizing personhood in omniscient reader's viewpoint" here!
i would highly recommend reading this short text as an introduction to some of the theory and terms used in my essay; ive also included an extremely condensed version of the major points used for my paper under the cut.
narrative prosthesis: disability and the dependencies of discourse speaks on disability— and more abstractly, a deficiency in something— being a vital part of literary narratives, while also disqualifying disabled people from being perceived as human.
characters need to be missing something or deficient in some way in order to necessitate a story to be told about them, and at the same time this disqualifies them from being a "human person". essentially, disability is used because of its inherent implications: that there is a story to be told about it, and that there is a story that can be made from it. the end goal of the narrative is to either "fix" this disability/deficiency, or to "prosthesize" it with an equally narratively valuable explanation or compensation, hiding it from view.
disability and its place in literature is surrounded by a myriad of issues, such as how representations of disabled people are used to justify their abuse and exploitation. disability is viewed as the "master trope of human disqualification", automatically marking someone to be completely unrecognisable as a "normal" human, and when a disability becomes too apparent— both in literature and in the real world— a prosthetic is sought by the narrative or by social pressure in order to "compensate" for the disability, restoring it to an "acceptable" level.

There's just something so ?¿? about how I'm only able to actively work on this project when I'm at objectively the lowest points of my life (deepest depression, lonely, unemployed, no income, lot of time) and only because I have family that I can be wholly financially dependent on. All of the work I've done is cool and an accomplishment but also nearly the entire time spent on it I've felt like a failure because I can't do anything else.
But when I'm working full time and even when I love my job and coworkers, I am so tired I can't do any art or anything after work, and then I seemingly out of nowhere have a meltdown and quit. Idk. Something here about needing art to live but not being able to live off making art and the disparate ways art is tied to survival

I think they could be friends
When Timmy mentioned that he didn't want the elders to find out he got the jail cell door open because he could get locked up in the dungeon where Winston is, it eventually got me wondering "hey,
what WOULD that be like?"
They could keep each other entertained for the rest of eternity, make some sort of plan to escape the dungeon together, drive each other nuts from either anger or insanity, etc.
I imagine there would be moments where they fall off because of disagreements but then later on they get along again, since they're forced to be stuck together anyway
Oh yeah also the fact that a cog and a toon could possibly get along together is an interesting thought by itself
So many possibilities

Whats the end goal for collecting mortals? You gonna drop everything you collected on a rock and call it good, like whats the point of all of this? What if their nothing left to collect, your jobs become meaningless, life would become meaningless, this is what mortals want to live their own live for is to find the good in life not to be stuck in stasis until the end of time. It's like a prison or a never ending nightmare we can't wake from. I think I would rather die.
Tumblr media
The Curator: I would say "then die" but we aren't allowed to let you die. Real weird for you to act like any time at all has passed for you since you were Collected. That's the point. We Collect you, and if you are ever released it doesn't matter if it's been a million years, it will feel like you blinked. No prison or nightmares because it feels like blinking.
Tumblr media
The Charmer: You act like mortals don't attempt to Collect either, especially Collecting just to Have. We are actually fully equipped to preserve what we Collect, while most other mortals pathetically attempt to preserve the creatures all around them, and sometimes even others of their own species, with terrible methods only used on the dead. They could only dream of preserving things that are still alive, for the rest of eternity, like we can.
Tumblr media
The Cartographer: I must agree. The Collections created by mortals we visit are always infinitely more horrifying than what we do, especially since so many involve killing the creature being Collected. Pin boards of tiny, impaled mortal's corpses. Horrifying imitations of life made from the skins of dead mortals, cured into shape. Using chemicals that you inject into the flesh of the mortal to preserve them, or submerging them in chemicals entirely. It doesn't have to be something you like, but the way we Collect is infinitely more considerate.
Tumblr media
The Charmer: It's not like any of the mortals get permission from the creatures around them that do not share their elevated sentience. So it strictly comes down to the permission of those mortals, and I have said this before, I am good at my job, so most come willingly. And we Collect to preserve the life of the mortals.

Probably gonna be a hot take, but- art competitions are anti-art.
Competition kills art. Inherently. The second you start comparing people’s works and labeling some as “winners” and “losers”, you trivialize it.
So many young or beginner artists completely give up or don’t even try because they don’t believe they’ll ever be “good enough”, and competitive attitudes reinforce ideas of what is “good enough”.
It’s just overall- really yikes, imo.

Now this might be because I have issues but is it just me or does Slay The Princess feel like an allegory for a relationship?
#like i dont even mean the actual textual stuff like the two gods loving each other i mean like#while the narrator himself does say that he is not the protagonist at all the voices do in fact count him as one of them and#both the narrator and the voices are described as shattered glass pieces on the floor#and im saying that just to contextualise what im about to say because i feel like the narrator is an echo of someone who was in#a relationship with another person and is trying to 'slay' the memory of this person and defeat death not only literally but#on a metaphorical level (as in the death of a relationship). if you do slay her you destroy her memory and in that way you do not know her#at all nor do you care to#and the routes would be the perspectives held by different parts of you. shes literally a being that changes based on who perceives her#but metaphorically thats just how people work isnt it? relationships are complicated and there is a part of you who sees someone as a razor#and there is a part of you who sees them as a damsel and another who sees them as a god etc etc#its like youre a person who is trying to make sense of the situation and; which is why the construct of the princess is made up of#several vessels called perspectives. you understand the whole of what you think only when you take apart all your perspectives;#and theres a you who isnt you anymore who doesnt want to do this. hes telling you to just destroy it. it was wholly wretched and wholly bad#and it changed which is a crime in itself. theres an echo of you. and theres you; built by this echo because thats how the self works#we are each our own god and we build ourselves. the different voices are like different parts of you#much like the vessels are the equivalent of the voices. theyre the finite confined perspectives; aspects of a whole person#and slaying her in this context would obviously mean literally just destroying the memory and deciding that change and all it brings#is an awful thing. though im not yet sure what the difference between leaving with the whole and between separating yourself#and leaving with just an aspect would be.#thats probably like the only thing thats kinda ruining this interpretation lol#oh and obviously a lot of the routes have like very strong relationship symbolism. specifically a lot of them feel like#scenes from a relationship that is falling apart. for example in the adversary and then the fury when you run away the dialogue#basically mimics a partner running away from a conflict and the other one destroying themselves because of it#witch and the thorn are both heavily Esop-coded and the text itself says that its about two people hurting each other even though they love#each other but both are afraid of the other one and of being vulnerable. thorn is about finding forgiveness in one another#and deciding to be better and love each other despite the hurt youve caused each other due to your problems#etc etc#like am i insane am i mental am i projecting?
