"저희 아버지는 좀 보수적인 사람이에요. 제가 어릴 때부터 그림을 그리는 걸 좋아했는데, 맨날 집에서만 그림을 그리다, 중학생 때 엄마한테 예고에 가겠다며 학원에 보내달라고 했어요. 같이 학원에서 상담받고 결제까지 했는데, 아빠가 완강하게 반대해서 무산됐어요. 아빠는 제가 번듯한 화이트칼라 직장인이 되기를 원하셨던 것 같아요. 그림을 전공해서 직업이 안정적이기 어려울 거라고 생각하셨니 그랬겠죠. 당시 아빠의 강한 반대로 바로 다음날 학원에 가서 너무 죄송하다고, 전액을 환불받고 돌아온 적이 있었거든요. 10년도 넘은 일인데, 그날 집에 돌아와서 상심했던 기억이 있어요. '이렇게 좋아하는걸 해보기만 하고 싶다고해도 안 되는구나' 하고요. 근데 이것 보세요. 세상이 바뀌고, 그림 잘 그려서 웹툰이나 이모티콘으로 돈도 잘 버는 사람들이 얼마나 많이 생겼어요!"

“My father is somewhat conservative. I’ve loved drawing ever since I was a kid, and I used to draw at home all the time. But when I got to middle school, I asked my mom to enroll me in an art academy with the dream of attending an arts high school. We went in for a consultation and even ended up paying the tuition. But, my dad was so dead set against it that it all fell through in the end. I think he had planned for me to get a decent white-collar job. He probably thought that if I were to be an art major, it would be hard for me to get a stable career. I remember going back to the academy the very next day, apologizing profusely, and getting a full refund, all because of my dad’s staunch opposition. It’s been 10 years since then, but I still remember the heartbreak I felt after coming home that day, thinking, ‘I can’t even pursue this thing that I love so much.’ But look at how the world has changed. Now, there are so many people making good money by drawing webtoons or creating emojis!"

I think I need to make a mid-year resolution to not give anyone any unsolicited advice because this year I’m offending people left and right.

I just need to keep my mouth shut and say positive things. People don’t want to hear anyone’s advice anyway and it’s not like they’re gonna follow it no matter how logical it is.

Maybe most of us just meander around bumping into walls and thinking we’re making progress.

그림을 그렸다. 아크릴 물감이 들어있는 그리기 세트인데, 캔버스 위에 숫자들이 빼곡하다. 생각보다 미색이 많아서 물감 양에 따라 색이 바뀌는게 아름답다. 앉아서 그리다 보니 디스크 통증이 심해져 도로 침대에 누웠다. 다시 처음으로 돌아간 것 같은 절망감이 들었다. 그러다 업무 연락이 오면 잊혀지지 않기 위해 빠르게 답신하거나 자료를 만들어 주었다.

사람은 공간이 아니다 라고 생각했다. 내 몸을 그대로 던져도 다치지 않는. 그렇지만 이해와 수용은 엄연히 다른 과정이다. 내게는 관이 없다고 한다. 관은 흔히 철학관 같은 곳에서 누울자리 직장 집 같은 장소를 의미한다. 고향처럼 존재를 정의하는 소속인데, 지금껏 소속감이라는 것을 느껴본적이 거의 없다. 이는 일종의 집착이 되어 자취방이나 친구, 연인, 직업 등에 완벽주의적인 비관으로도망쳤다. 

몇달을 종일 침대에 누워 천장을 보다보니 지금까지 시도한 발버둥이 부질없게 느껴진다. 

모태신앙이 기독교인 친구는 신이 항상 지켜본다는 걸 느낀다고 한다. 삶으로부터 나온 답을 얻기 어려운 질문부터 사소한 고민조차 신은 곁에서평가하지 않는체 곁을 지킨다고 했다. 자애로운 모습을 하고서. 키르케고르는 실존주의의 최종형태가 종교적 실존이라 했었다. 비록 나는 무신론자이고 비과학적인 것들을 개인적 경험없이 받아들이기에 두렵다. 

삶은 그저 하루를 견뎌내게 해준 것들에 감사하고 낙관론적 허무주의로 죽음과 괴로움을 받아들이는 것이라고 생각했다.

데라우치 가문은 1922년 오호데라우치문고(櫻圃寺內文庫)라는 도서관을 설립했다. 총리대신에서 물러나 병상에 있던 데라우치는 아들 히사이치를 불러 자신이 수집한 서책과 문화재로 도서관을 세우도록 했다. 데라우치의 고향 야마구치현에 문을 연 이 도서관은 백작 작위를 승계한 큰아들 히사이치에 의해 건립되었다. 이 도서관을 채운 것은 데라우치 마사타케가 조선에서 빼돌린 고서와 문화재였다. 데라우치 가문은 최신 건물로 도서관을 세우고, 북쪽에 부속 건물로 조선관(朝鮮館)을 따로 지었다. 1922년 12월 시점에 데라우치문고 1만5500여 장서 중 조선본은 46종 432책, 조선 옛 서찰과 법첩이 191책(150종)이었다. <오호문고기>에는 데라우치가 도서관을 세운 이유가 남아 있다
