astrology terms in korean
점성술 (jumsungsul) means “astrology” in korean. from personal experience, i have never really talked astrology with another korean person, so i don’t think koreans are generally concerned with astrology unless it is chinese astrology (i mean, who taught these koreans to have better civilizations during the ancient times lol). however, since i have seen korean magazines have astrology pages in them too (western astrology is srsly taking over the world), i thought i should share how koreans name some terms in astrology in their own language! it was indeed very interesting, and i hope you guys find it cool too :)
♡ the signs ♡
note before you read: 자리 (jari) means “position” in terms of astrology in korean because the stars are in a certain position to be a certain sign! but most koreans do know that the word will mean “sign” when the appropriate term comes before the word.
aries — 양자리 (yangjari)
literally means “ram/sheep sign”
taurus — 황소자리 (hwangsojari)
literally means “bull sign”
gemini — 쌍둥이자리 (ssangdoongiejari)
literally means “twins sign”
cancer — 게자리 (gaejari)
literally means “crab sign”
leo — 사자자리 (sajajari)
literally means “lion sign”
virgo — 처녀자리 (cheonyeojari)
literally means “virgin/maiden sign”
libra — 천칭자리 (cheonchingjari)
literally means “scales sign”
scorpio — 전갈자리 (jeongaljari)
literally means “scorpion sign”
sagittarius — 사수자리 (sasujari)
literally means “archer sign”
capricorn — 염소자리 (yeomsojari)
literally means “goat sign”
aquarius — 물병자리 (mulbyungjari)

♡ the sun + planets ♡
note before you read: 성(에) (sung[e]) means “frosted” so when that is attached to the end of the word, it’s just referring to the planet as a frosted body. and earth is the only planet without that ending character.
plus, one more thing that is interesting about this is that some of the planets are named after their planetary days! only the moon (monday) and the sun (sunday) are not named after their days in the list though.
as for uranus, neptune, and pluto, there are three characters for them as you see! i haven’t found any meaning behind their first characters, but the second common character they share, 왕 (wang), means either “king” or “big”, so we can imply that these planets are the “ultimate frozen bodies” in space if we translate it literally.
sun — 태양/해 (taeyang/hae)
earth — 지구 (jigoo)
moon — 달 (dal)
mercury — 수성 (soosung)
the first character 수 (soo) is used for wednesday (수요일)
venus — 금성 (geumsung)
the first character 금 (geum) is used for friday (금요일)
mars — 화성 (hwasung)
the first character 화 (hwa) is used for tuesday (화요일)
jupiter — 목성 (moksung)
the first character 목 (mok) is used for thursday (목요일)
saturn — 토성 (tosung)
the first character 토 (tō) is used for saturday (토요일)
uranus — 천왕성 (cheonwangsung)
neptune — 해왕성 (haewangsung)
pluto — 명왕성 (myungwangsung)
i recommend that everyone do this in their native language so we can approach astrology through different languages/cultures! it’d be super interesting to see how they might name signs/planets in their cultures.
