#(she says idealistically)
I feel bad for Starlo. (pt. 9)
Star's the Papyrus (both are idealistic & seen as naive) of this game (Martlet is another possible parallel), even though he's got similarities with Undyne too. No matter how broken Ceroba seemed he asked himself WHY she did what she did and I think that's SUPER important.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ceroba didn't do this. Her first instinct was to be harsh (after being harsh with him even BEFORE he attacked Clover):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
called his personality "damaged" before this scene
... you never asked yourself WHY he did the whole sheriff act.
.... you never asked WHY he didn't want to grow up. If it was a coping mechanism, if he wanted to help his community in a way he couldn't as a farmer? It was never on her mind.
Yes he has baggage but he's dealing with it all while uplifting others, Ceroba has baggage but is well taken care of by Star and at least has him, he has no one but himself and his optimism to pull him out of negative feelings, and still gets insulted.
Yeah Ceroba's been through stuff but apparently it's been some time since Chujin passed and Kanako fell down, she should have at least started to support Star emotionally like he's been supporting her (sure, he did so with distractions, but as he said "aren't distractions what's best for all of that?" He did his best). Problem is she DIDN'T realise he was ever struggling with self worth and only assumed he was goofing off. Either that or she did nothing about it aka was too occupied with her own problems (which are valid but still... she should have tried at least a little) Cer's character flaw is being too stubborn and devoted to Chujin. She trusted him blindly and wholeheartedly. Everything else came in 2nd place. This is clear as day.
It hurts knowing Ceroba could never respect Starlo the way she still does her husband. Not saying she shouldn't admire Chujin, but the way she sees Star as a goofy manchild whose lifelong passion can go "too far," the way she sees all this Wild East stuff as him "just having fun," the way she thinks that only someone whose brain isn't developed would ever consider dating him just... ticks me off, tbh. That's why I think the guy needs someone who will be gentle and patient with him, even if that other person is going through tough times.
She DID call Starlo the best sheriff she's ever known (honestly the only sweet moment between them in pacifist, but it is very brief, especially in neutral where he just gets cut off; also I hope she was being genuine here) and said how everyone adored him (but hated his persona, which I've already covered: basically they either hated 'North Star' as a whole, which I hope isn't true, or just how excited he was to meet Clover, which makes no sense to me; already covered it as well)
Bonus: Dina didn't know who Star really was or what he looked like, not before the end credits rolled (when he shows up as himself & she's also seen there; makes sense that he finally came clean to her):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So he's literally been playing this role 24/7, ever since she became the bartender; ever since this town started to exist. It's impressive how he could keep up an act AND use this fake accent for so long
Bonus #2: Star was SUPER worried about Clover's safety; that's what REALLY upset him (he cares about that child sm). THAT's what drove him off the edge (unless he naturally has a temper, i don't think this is it tho). Either way, he was way more patient w Ceroba than I think most would have been in that situation. Sure he snapped a few times, but there was a good reason to. He still TRIED to reason with her. Why did he attack? Worried for Martlet & Clover. I honestly think Star's the type to only get super angry if someone he loves is in danger (minus the stuff that happened which led him to cracking)

ACOK Sansa II my beloved. In her chambers, sees an unsigned note, goes into panic mode thinking it's a trap, tries to keep herself calm and ignore the note but her need for home, for Winterfell is so strong that she just can't help but go to the godswood.
She has no one to trust, if she gets caught she's probably going to get beaten again, but for even the slim chance of getting to go home she'd rather risk everything against her instincts then stay and lose the chance.
She goes and instead of meeting a gallant knight, someone brave and strong to save her or hell, joffrey's man to trick amd trap her, it's Dontos. A scared, drunken fool, who nearly died a just a while ago. Who is only alive because of Sansa, and the fact that an 11 year old girl was brave enough to try to save him opens his eyes to the truth of his job and his life so much that he's willing to risk his life to bring her to safety. This is, perhaps, the first time Dontos decides to act like a true knight.
Sansa does not understand it yet, but her sincere intentions for people to be safe and happy inspires morally grey characters to protect her to their limited ability. She's frustrated that Dontos is a drunken fool, and she quite literally gets threatened day and night by Sandor, but they are the only ones who make her life just a little bit easier.
We also see that from Ned's death onwards, Sansa is forced to abide the rules, trust no one, and get better at lying. Sandor and Sansa's dialogues are always a delight, the last sentence of Sansa II summarizes King's Landing the best: "Everyone is a liar, and all better than you."

imagining one sided obi wan/padme where she thinks he’s really hot day one and it only magnifies when she’s old enough that he doesn’t see her as a kid anymore. only she’s kind of insane about romance so obi wan’s like “sometimes when it’s clear someone else thinks you’re soulmates trapped on opposite sides utterly incapable of reaching what you both long for you just have to nod and smile and extract yourself from the situation” while baby anakin is thinking vividly about killing him in the night. on the other hand anakin get get padme to meet with him by talking about how cool obi wan is
anon I have been thinking about this ask for WEEKS unable to reply for sheer inability to add to the genius therein

From the next chapter of Our souls lie down in the grass. I've got two chapters finished and want to get at least one more drafted before I post again, I think, because these are all of a part, thematically, and I've been doing a lot of going back and editing as I figured out stuff. But there is progress!
“Thank the seas that you're all right,” Selwyn said for the third time. He'd been hugging her for a while, easing back occasionally to run his hands over her head and arms before pulling her back in for another crushing embrace. Brienne was starting to think that they should have stayed in Morne another day or two until her bruises weren't quite so vivid.
Over her father's shoulder, she saw Jaime grinning in amusement.
“Thank the seas—and Jaime,” she said, and that sent Selwyn rocking back a step.
“Of course!” He turned on his heel and Brienne had time to see Jaime's eyes go wide before he was enveloped in her father's enormous embrace.

i gotta get this out of my head. anyway guess who had a shit time in class today.
im always up for a discussion, if im wrong im wrong and im willing to learn. but making insane statements, then interrupting every time i try and explain why you're wrong is so annoying.
like im trying to talk to you in a calm manner, hell i even agree with some of the points you make but as soon as i say smth that doesnt fit your narrative you start interrupting and raising your voice? like bro. that's so freaking rude. and then to act like you somehow "won" the debate that i wasnt even trying to have with you is just.fucked up.
As a politics student i understand that not everyone will have the same pov as me. which is great. it encourages criticial thinking and valuable discussion. but only if you approach it in good faith?
you're out here buying into the same sick and dehumanising narrative of palestinian people and protesters, trying to play the oppression olympics and somehow conflating the very real suffering of palestinian people to online hate white women are recieving for crying crocodile tears over imagined scenarios is so ?@#$%????? like i dont even have words.
anyway. my prof stopped me before i could rip into her after that. so. i had to vent this out here otherwise it would just be running around in my head like a rat.

General Armstrong isnt that understood because of her very contrasting wording. she says Alex "deserted her country" and "is a coward" for leaving the Ishval War, sounding as if she wanted him to stay and do his duty, but with her actions and later on words to Alex its shown she means he should have stayed there, protected the people, and tried to stop the war by any means possible. she says that in Briggs only the strong survive and everyone is to Obey Her without question and thats, the unquestioned authority, is the secret to the power of Briggs, but turns out she preaches initiative and independent force of military, one that will do whats necessary to Actually protect their people and country, no matter who is commanding them, no matter who tries to stop them, a force knit so tight together, with goals and steps to take so clear to all her men they dont even need her above them to act.
from the Armstrong family influence, its easy to see her, and alex as some sort of royalty, her as a monarch, while her head and her heart is full of how to have a people that can, and will, govern itself, with every individual that shares the resolve in their heart able to fight for it, seize the means of production if you will, and all power in due time. general armstrong's democracy for the country is rooted in the men she trains to seize it themselves, while mustangs is given to the people by the powers above.

#atla#azula#this is about zuko & azula's finale agni kai. while i adore it + it's such a beautiful fight...#i saw a poll about who would've won if katara hadn't been there; and most people were saying it wouldve been zuko#but to me zuko would've lost not because azula wasn't in her right mind but because he wouldve had restraint and she wouldnt#restraint in the sense of... she's still his SISTER so he's aiming not to maim or kill; unlike azula who in that moment has no qualms abt—#—inflicting lethal injuries on anyone present. and it just got me thinking about how we were robbed of their sibling relship#a more nuanced sibling relship at least. like without katara there would we have seen zuko hesitate before dealing a winning blow#would he have seen his little sister who their family failed just as much as they failed him?#because even iroh says at some point that “[azula] is crazy & needs to go down” like... sir that is your niece#idk#i wish we could've gotten a zuko who not only fears envies pities and opposes azula; but also loves her in some way#they're constantly pit against each other and i wonder if the younger idealistic compassionate zuko wouldve been protective of her#up until his banishment; then a once loving relationship (if strained) becomes so horrifically complicated#like the narrative spent way more time establishing azula as a terrible manipulative person (which she is) but also glossing over the fact—#—that she's a child. she wasn't born evil & the writing does not condemn ozai at all for his failure in raising her#the writing clearly shows how he fucked up with zuko but not how he fucked up with azula#which is a missed opportunity for zuko to empathize with her. they were both kids under the same abuse; just pushed in opposite directions

i’m not yet fully sure how to annunciate this but satine kyrze in clone wars is written in such a way that the writers misogyny is inextricable from her character for me and it’s very hard to like her or hate her or really cohere what she could have been. like the relationship that damara has to hussie’s racism in homestuck but without the handmaid. maybe it’s my own thing but all portrayal of her positive or negative falls flat to me bc it’s so removed from what her character is or it’s too fucking sexist to stomach

Sam Guthrie is a character I love very much but don’t often talk about, I feel like we’ve seen about as good as we’re going to get for him that’s possible in comics in X-Force 19, there’s nothing really more to worry about because he’s already achieved the perfect writing condition. Still I do have a proprietary fondness for him that means I will complain about how he’s currently written. Sam I think is a character driven by fear, or more specifically awareness. His reaction to the hardships dealt to him is to remember that they happened and try to avoid the same situation. His memory is long. He’s cautious but not cowardly, he’s awkward but not dumb. Every move of his is made after carefully considering what to do, and why, and what could come ricocheting back at him if it goes wrong. Doesn’t mean he notices everything. Does mean that what he does notice, sticks.
That’s why he’s the social leader of the New Mutants. He pays attention to everyone’s faults, foibles, needs, wants in a way that Dani has neither the time nor the inclination to and he remembers them. That’s why he cements the split from Xavier in the first place. He can’t reconcile his own experience (hopping from peril to peril to the wreckage of the mansion) with Xavier’s philosophy. To believe that passive defense and non-violence work would require him to forget or deliberately ignore the evidence of his own eyes. He wants to play things safe not in the sense of avoiding conflict, but rather in the sense of anticipating it and heading it off. Any festering issue can spread. The infected portion must be removed. Sam isn’t about to wait around for things to bite him in the ass.
That’s also why he’s a good tactical leader to X-Force. Separated from Dani and Cable, he does hold his own because he can carefully catalogue the ins and outs of a battlefield. However that same attention to detail that makes him a natural mentor also makes it tiring for him to call the shots. He can, does, and will act well as an executive leader, only with more regret over the mess that comes with making decisions that Dani and/or Cable would leave firmly in the past.
Comparing with Sunspot as not his foil (that’d be Dani) but the character who’s always there to mirror him, this driving force becomes more apparent. Sam and Berto both have loved ones die shortly before getting recruited. Sam reacts to his father’s death conscientiously. He steps into his role to bring in income. He knew it was coming, he feared it, he planned what to do to recover.
Berto, on the other hand, is more driven by grief. Juliana’s death was a shock that I think is still the single most important event to him. While his home life wasn’t always the best, I don’t believe Berto ever believed that he could experience the sort of life-or-death hardship his father had until that point. Ever since I think he’s been trying to stop that from ever happening again. Through New Mutants he lashes out in danger, assumes the worst in mishaps (Fallen Angels), shows willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good. His perpetual state is of surprise and horror at how the world is and a need to intervene.
That’s why his Avengers characterization gets a pass, because it feels like it grows from that solid base where Sam is just [insert normal guy here]. Berto spends that run reacting, lashing out at the idiocy the other Avengers get into. Sam might create a third Avengers faction to nope out of there and productively do his own thing, because he can see the civil war coming. Dani might do it because nothing’s going to get done if she doesn’t do it herself. Berto creates one because he can’t stand watching these people get into stupid spats while the world is ending, he physically can’t stand by.

damn this may be one of her worst songs- but for her, i will keep it streaming 🫡
also, while i VERY MUCH do not agree with her stances on AI, i weirdly like that she's leaning into the uncanny valley aspects of AI art (specifically in the wonky hands, the dead eyes, the disjointed textures nd colors)
