I absolutely LOVE the Squirtle/Wartortle illustrations by kantaro in Pokemon 151!
Tumblr media
The Squirtle jumping so joyfully from the rock into the ocean, the colors are STUNNING! I love the contrast of the Squirtle's aqua blue framed in the vivid orange sky, the soft bit of blue reflecting in its shell and its tail just catching the sun, how little and squishy its body looks as it launches itself towards the water with such tremendous excitement!
The lineless style of the background gives me the feel of a travel poster and I sense the tropical environment around it from the rocks and trees framing the corners, the waterfall splashing with as much energy as the Squirtle!
The layered blues on the surface of the water and the bubbles rising at the corner make me FEEL the liquid rising to meet the Squirtle--I can just feel how the next moment it's going to break through and be immersed in a cool island swim!
Tumblr media
And the Wartortle running along the sunset beach, this is somehow everything I always imagined for Wartortle! I adore the way the rich purple melts into the warm red/orange sky, the matching purple clouds and shadows in the foreground, and how the dimming sunlight glows red on Wartortle's deep blues!
I love how the yellow and orange of the sky illuminate the lapping waves, I can just feel the gentle motion of the sea at dusk. The aqua color of the ocean matches Wartortle's ears and tail and sets off the red-orange sand, I just love how the colors are here!
Wartortle looks so round and squishy, I love its happiness as it goes frolicking through the shallows, chasing the bubbles caught in the setting sun! The shine and deep shadow on its shell give it an almost jewel texture like real tortoise shell; I love the silhouetted splash Wartortle leaves as it goes running across the shore. It's so full of energy and delight at the end of a gorgeous day! The colors in these are SO vivid and harmonized and the style is so cute and bursting with energy and joy. I just LOVE it (also Squirtle is my starter)
#pokemon#pokemon tcg#long post#i have deep affection for bulbasaur as well though and i also love the bulbasaur/ivysaur cards in this set#i SO wish we'd gotten art of the final evolutions in the same style as the pre-evos' standard cards!!#(yes i do love the full art ones but i also love the illustrations on the standard cards!)#from the way the settings in these two were going; i would have imagined blastoise to be set at night (??)#i LOVE pokemon cards. i can't keep up with every set but i started collecting again now and then a few years ago#and 151 has really got me wanting the full set the way i haven't since childhood. SO many beautiful illustrations (but there always are)#it's like having little pieces of art of my favorite characters and it's only.. slightly... less expensive than actually commissioning ....#i KNOW it's less expensive to buy the individuals online but it's so much less fun#part of the fun is having YOUR own pokemon journey ((going to the store)) and seeing what YOU encounter ((when you open the pack))#i do buy them online sometimes but i usually dont form as strong associations with them as when i open a pack in a certain setting or place#i tend to try to save them to open right before a significant event like starting something new or a holiday. so that i form associations#and it's like 'oh that's the galarian obstagoon from when my mom came home for christmas'#and 'that's the snorlax who reassured me when i was hurt'#i don't buy them too often so i've got to make it count#anyway i know i should wait for the prices on this one to come down because it's absolutely ridiculous#i didn't buy anything at release because i was like $6 for one booster pack??? but i couldn't take just sitting and watching them sell out#i really like the poster because i can look at so many beautiful pictures all together#i could say stuff like this about literally every pokemon illustration (if i had time to write it out) and sometimes i've wanted to#i just chose these two because these are a couple of my original favorite pokemon and i just couldn't keep it to myself. i LOVE these

Now it’s something big.
Big enough that it made me log in to this long-unused account.
For the first time in 27 years of Pokemon history, Daisy Oak (aka Blue/Gary’s older sister), a character who has been with us since the beginning, got a TCG artwork. Illustrated by Tomomi Kaneko, it’s part of the most recent “Pokemon Card 151″ expansion - a TCG set that celebrates the first generation of Pokemon, with each one of the original 151 getting its own card (including the long-unseen Kadabra). What a perfect opportunity to give Daisy her long deserved artwork! It remains to be seen whether a Full-Art Secret Rare version of this card exists as well. It is the first official artwork of Daisy since 1996, when she was featured on a New Year postcard illustrated by Ken Sugimori (one of the most elusive artworks in existence and one of the first Pokemon arts in general). It is also the first ever artwork of her current game design, which originates from FR/LG. Before now, we only had the overworld (FRLG and HGSS) sprites and the Fame Checker sprite from FRLG. She didn’t appear in LGPE (so there’s no 3D model for her - maybe Masters could change that?) and was omitted from Origins (now I can forgive that...) and the designs found in her various manga appearances differ greatly. So, this definitely does her justice but I am waiting for more!

im curious! i dont think ive seen you post much about poliwhirl, why was that mon's full art card the one you want most from 151?
oh it's just fucking gorgeous full stop
Tumblr media
i don't play the TCG so when i am chasing sets and cards its purely for aesthetic reasons. that's why i usually try to master shiny sets, because i love shiny pokemon! i initially had no interest in 151, was just going to buy it because i know it'll be worth hundreds in the long-term, but then i saw some of the illus rares and fell in fucking love
i love illustration rares because they remind me of that trend the pokemon fandom started doing ages ago where they would paint outside the borders of base set pokemon cards and 'extend' them. this was before full art cards were a thing, really, we had a rare few but it was not common at all--
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(c: @awesomepaintedcards, tons more there)
all the illus rares invoke this trend but i love this poliwhirl because:
it captures one of my favourite of the universe's little beauties: the multicolour shine of city lights on rain
the colour scheme is not cluttered despite this--the blue shines through!!
the holo effect only accentuates the city lights! it makes them look almost 3d
despite the fact that this is clearly a busy city, poliwhirl is having a moment of solitude within its depths. how did it get there? what is it doing? i love the way it looks to its reflection, just as mystified and delighted as i am.
i once took inspiration from a pokemon card for some pokemon fanfiction, and "holographic rendering of a glowing city rich with nightlife" was literally what i put in the fic.
poliwhirl is the favourite pokemon of satoshi taijiri, pokemon's creator. if you look back on super early pokemon promotional material, poliwhirl is *everywhere.* so this card reads as an intentional homage to me, and i am a nerd who knows more pokemon trivia than anyone in existence, so i love that.
its a good poliwhirl.

I must know the answer to live on freely!! Without being hunted by doubt!!! Oh, old, unknowable horror.........do you like Pokemon? (ㆁωㆁ)
Old enough that I had a poster of the original 151 Pokémon hanging on my bedroom wall once upon a time.
And had them memorized. In order. And almost the full collection of Indigo League VHS tapes. And enough Pokémon cards to probably wallpaper my entire house.
My first forray into fan art was Pokémon fan art.
I've beaten every game prior to Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, but played a decent length into Diamond. Also beat Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Snap, and put entirely too much time into Pokémon Pinball and Puzzle Challenge.
Some of my favorites (in no particular order) are Eevee, Vulpix, Meowth, Espeon, Skarmory, Suicune, Unown, Cyndoquill, Mudkip, Cacturne, and Absol.
Meowth has been my longest running favorite.

I was never really into the pokemon tcg, but I picked up a 6-pack box of the new 151 set. The artwork for these cards is SO GOOD. And I'm hoping to get one of the adorable full-art cards! Will update when I open them!

hi i was thinking about how i like komanami again and i feel like i’ve never seen anyone mention the Drama, the Tragedy, the Romance of komaeda essentially committing suicide to save the traitor from himself and the others whom he believed were irredeemable Despairs, and without his knowledge, the traitor was in fact Chiaki, the girl whose loss caused them all to become Despair in the first place. Whether he knew he was doing it or not, he sacrificed himself to save Chiaki, the girl he couldn’t save last time, and i just think that’s full of so much angsty romantic emotions that it makes me wanna curl up in a ball and think about it for several hours

also my favorite thing about volo is even though he’s completely unhinged and obsessed he’s also just, genuinely, a very cute person who actually genuinely loves his pokemon a lot. like, he’s got a togekiss, you can’t get that pokemon without loving it a lot.
he’s not a villain for evil reasons, it’s more of like...an excess of love, i think.

I think a friend said it (maybe in the tags of something? sorry i don’t remember who it was ;w;), but thinking about Yu-Gi-Oh today and the loss of Takahashi recently...despite my growing away from DM out of all the yugioh series somewhat, it does bear saying that Yu-Gi-Oh is probably one of the few shonen series out there that doesn’t end with an epilogue where everyone is happily straight married.
Other than just being really nice to not have something like that in general, I think it says a lot about what kind of a story Yu-Gi-Oh is. Yu-Gi-Oh accepts the fact that stories never really end, and doesn’t bother putting a tidy bow on things. The story of Atem was over, but the story of his friends will continue on, and to go forward and time and see them all paired off as adults would be against the spirit of the story. It’s all about beginnings out of endings. Our stories keep going in the people we leave behind, even when we’ve stepped off the stage.
I meant to write something about how much Yu-Gi-Oh meant to me in honor of Takahashi-sensei’s memory, but I think this rumination turned into all I needed to say while I was typing it out. Yu-Gi-Oh is important in a lot of ways. It’s so much more than a commercial for a card game. At its heart, it was a story that Takahashi wanted to tell, and the stories that came after it in his universe were also told by people who wanted to tell emotional stories, not just stories that sold toys.
Takahashi-sensei’s part of the story has come to a close, but the story won’t ever end because we are all still here with the memory of it.
Thank you, Takahashi-sensei. You’ve changed a lot of lives.

From Far Away is the superior isekai because it is the only one, to my knowledge, to have the protagonist not understand the language of the fantasy world she goes to, and have to take the time and effort to actually learn it. This is both excellent from a worldbuilding standpoint, a narrative standpoint that stands out in a sea of isekai in which the world seems to bend into shape specifically for the protagonist, and also because it gives us great moments like this

[image id: a manga page. In the first panel, a girl with short hair says “Good job, honey,” to a man with long black hair, who is jerking back with a blush and a look of surprise. In the next panel, the dark haired man, still blushing, says, “Honey?” The short haired girl has a confused smile on her face, thinking “What?” In the last panel, the two are surrounded by three older men who appear to be teasing them. They are saying “Aha! So you’re a married couple, eh? What a young couple!” “To be honest, I was wondering about you two all this time. I get it, you’re husband and wife!” The dark haired man, still blushing responds “No!! That was...” Another man replies, “It’s okay...Don’t be embarrassed.” /end id]

Woodbridge Preschool
The Montessori approach is focused on creating a supportive and stimulating learning environment that encourages children to develop their full potential. It was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, and educator, in the early 1900s. The concept is based on the idea that children learn best through self-directed exploration and hands-on learning experiences in a carefully prepared setting. Merit School Learning Center at The Glen is a Woodbridge preschool that embraces this method. They provide the Stepping Stones Montessori classroom for two- to three-year-olds and present an orderly, focused, and calm environment in which your child can learn and grow.
Annual Events in Woodbridge, VA
Woodbridge hosts several annual events throughout the year, ranging from cultural celebrations to community festivals. The Occoquan Arts and Crafts Show is a bi-annual event held in April and September in nearby Occoquan just a short drive from Woodbridge. The show features over 300 artists and crafters, showcasing their work in a variety of mediums such as pottery, painting, jewelry, and more. The Fall Jubilee is held annually in October, and features live music, food vendors, a craft show, and a carnival. The Woodbridge Farmers Market is held weekly from May through November and offers fresh produce, locally made crafts, and live music. In December, the Potomac Mills Mall transforms into a Winter Wonderland, complete with a holiday light show, visits from Santa Claus, and festive decorations. These are just some of the yearly events that keep the town active.
Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Woodbridge, VA
Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a 644-acre protected area and was established in 1998 to safeguard and enhance the wetlands and forest habitats along the Occoquan River and its tributaries. It is a secure haven for a variety of migratory birds, including waterfowl, songbirds, and raptors. You can also find bald eagles, ospreys, river otters, and white-tailed deer in the vicinity. Some of the activities people enjoy doing on the trails and boardwalks include birdwatching, hiking, and wildlife photography. In addition to its natural beauty, the refuge also serves as an important educational resource for the community and hosts a variety of educational programs, including guided nature walks, birdwatching tours, and school field trips.
Woodbridge Man Chokes Woman, Steals Her Credit Cards
Studies have consistently shown that men are more likely than women to commit crimes and be violent. This trend holds true across cultures and geographic regions and is observed in both developed and developing countries. Men tend to have higher levels of testosterone than women, which may contribute to more aggressive behavior. They are also more likely than women to be involved in illegal activities that offer high financial rewards, such as drug trafficking and organized crime. Boys and men are also often socialized to be more aggressive and competitive than girls and women. They may also be exposed to more violence and aggression in media and popular culture. In Woodbridge, a man has been arrested and could face 27 years in prison for trying to strangle a woman and stealing from her. Click here to read more.

All designs from Mirabilia Designs by Nora Corbett:
#151: Renaissance Mermaid— June 15, 2017
Inspired by the Botticelli painting, The Birth of Venus, this sensuous maiden rises from the depths of the sea enveloped in her long lustrous hair. She holds her heart in her hand – perhaps to lure some shy lover? Her tail shimmers in shades of greens and blues, strands of crystals dance in the underwater currents and all is complemented by a regal halo of pearls.
#152: Lady of Mystery— August 15, 2017
Who is this lovely maiden with tangled locks and alabaster skin, pausing beneath an arbor of dramatic black roses?
Perhaps she’s an innocent heroine from a suspenseful tale, awakened by dark dreams. Will she rendezvous with a supernatural lover or will she wander alone, searching forever for her lost soulmate? She is yours to stitch. You decide her fate.
#153: Miss Cherry Blossom— October 15, 2017
She wanders through a tranquil lush garden.
The air is full with the scent of warming spring earth. Handwoven silk flutters lightly over carpets of petals. Her hairpins are bright and sparkling with their myriad of twinkling beads.
The patterns dancing on her gown reflect the pink that has covered the countryside. She moves through this “Snowstorm of Cherry Blossoms”, where all the most romantic scenes in movies are set. We invite you to celebrate this otherworldly blizzard of tranquility in every delightful detail of this elegant pattern.
#154: Royal Games II– December 15, 2017
“Off with their heads!” “Let them eat cake!” Bow Down!” “Kiss the Rings!”. With great pleasure, we present to you the Queen of Diamonds and the Queen of Clubs.
They join their sisters from the previous Mirabilia pattern “Royal Games I” (MD150).They too can be stitched as two single cards or as pictured. They are now a full court of lovely, powerful, and wise rulers.
#155: Sun Goddess— February 15, 2018
Follow the patterned trail with your needle and floss like a map to deeper creativity and understanding. Let her lead you across the sea of cornflower blue. Weave through the waving lavender fields. Bead the glowing cinnamon fireflies dotting the fields. Even the hot fuchsia shades of feathers are like flowing lava from deep within. This goddess spirit guide is designed to lead you to your inner glow. Hot, bright, and beautiful, like the sun.
#156: Mooka— April 15, 2018
On a bed draped of watery silk and mossy vines sits a muse for fairy tales and Gothic paintings. Writers and poets wait to share her secrets. Painters try to match her alabaster skin with flowing paint. Stitchers will weave her gown with silk threads.
An ethereal goddess in the woods is captured in a moment on linen.
#157: Alice— June 15, 2018
Thread your needle and meet our Alice. She is poised like a porcelain doll on the edge of adventure. She will banter with smirky cats, meet with heartless queens and go to a crazy tea party. She rushes into the alternative universe with unconventional characters and fascinating experiences. Her many secrets are stitched in her face and cascading ribbons.
#158: Lady Mirabilia— June 18, 2018
Dear Cross-Stitch artist,
I am delighted to present to you a very special 25th anniversary pattern. Lady Mirabilia is a silver beaded celebration. She is laced with leaves and has Art Deco inspired details.
A unique butterfly charm has been created especially for her and is exclusive to this pattern.
She celebrates 25 years of ephemeral fairies, sparkling mermaids, and visions of strong feminine beauty. I am honored to have been a part of the creative process for your treasured works.
Forever dreaming in stitches, floss and beads.
#159: March Aquamarine Fairy— August 15, 2018
Her dress swishes like the foaming blue waters this birthstone is named for. Let her delicate features and wispy antennae enchant you. She can be mischievous, so stitch her while you can before she flitters off to other waters and streams.
#160: Lady Justice— October 15, 2018
The rose crowned Lady Justice swiftly cuts to the core of truth. She has steady scales and is blindfolded for fair judgement. She is inspired by the Greek goddess, Themis. A classic strong female figure representing the constant battle for noble truth.

October Wednesday 2 has had a severe illness – appears much broken – came here in 1892 – d’origine from the neighbourhood of not far from Manchester – had called here on Mr. Harrison on the Thursday and he died on the Sunday – Captain Cochrane very excentric – thought to be rather besides himself – Mr. B- knew him – Dr. Granvilles’ work good, but too much on the favourable side – as Dr. Lefevre said nothing that was not true but all couleur de rose – Mr. Atkinson said this morning he knew G- met him in society but he has his note-book out, and made notes even comparatively of all that was said so that really people were afraid – Layard in a great hurry when at the Imperial library Mr. A- did not know or see much of him – he seemed chiefly anxious to copy M. Queen of Scots’ letters – and at this time A- was busy copying them to give to prince Alexander .......... who has published her inedited letters in 18vo. – on our return home this evening found 2 letters for Moscow and 1 for Odessa from Mr. de Fischer and his card, and found 2 letters from Mr. Hodson (John Esquire) for Moscow and one for Odessa, and one directed to me for A- from her sister – her aunt well as usual – Mr. Bayley made no offer of letters, and, of course, I did not ask me for any – did not name or hint at the subject –
at the Hermitage the Vierge d’Albe (salle 5) and the Paul Potter (vache qui [pisse]) and the 4 Clauds’ (salle 40) (morning noon and evening and night) worth all the rest – In salle 40 the chef-d’-oeuvre of Teniers’
October Wednesday 2 and the Rubens from which the English church picture is copied and in salle 41 some fine Murillos (the Repose in Egypt and the lady boy fleeing his dog) – and in salle some fine Van d’Eycks [van Dyck] –
Mr. B- said it must be 30 years since Lord Stuart was here – then Mr. Stuart – could not speak Russ[ian] well but could read it well – and spoke French and German well –
