Shonen Knife - Sweet Christmas - 1991

Releasing pop songs for anglo audiences when English is not your first language can be tricky but hey, that never stopped ABBA…

So when Osaka pop/punk rockers, Shonen Knife formed in 1981 with the goal of being Japan’s version of the Ramones meet the Beach Boys, they faced a daunting task. Nevertheless in spite of (or perhaps in part, because of) their cornball lyrics and garage rock utter lack of pretense, they gained a near cult following among critics and such bands as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Fugazi and others and have gone on tour with some of them (Kurt Cobain was such a fan that he invited them to be the opening act on their European “Nevermind” tour). Legendary British DJ John Peel was an early proponent.

Their lineup has changed a few times but they are still going strong.

In 1991 they released their Christmas gift to the world:

Gallery: Delta Green

Most of my RPG illustration work has been for Call of Cthulhu related projects. That’s the result of intention and good luck and accident.

The Intention part happened in the year 2000. I submitted some illustrations to the Delta Green website. Delta Green was a Call of Cthulhu RPG set in modern times – the late 199os. Most CoC games are set in the 1920s/1930s, the time the original stories were written and set. I discovered Delta Green in 1999 when I working at Half Price Books. I was the buyer when a customer sold us his collection of RPG manuals. In the buy was Delta Green and its sequel Delta Green: Countdown. I bought those books for myself. I loved the ideas behind the setting. It updated the Cthulhu Mythos for the late Twentieth Century in ways that surprised and delighted me. It created a means and a reason for investigators to, well, investigate the horrors from beyond.

I’d wanted to illustrate RPGs but didn’t have much of a portfolio of examples to show. I found the Delta Green site early the next year. I don’t think it had a way to send submissions and I don’t think they were asking for any. What it did have was a way to submit fan art and writing. So I worked up three illustrations (see the follow gallery) and submitted them. They got posted. No one from Delta Green contacted me.

Oh well.

Two years later those illustrations got me work at The Black Seal. But that’s another post.

The original photoshop files of these illustrations are, possibly, residing on an old back up drive. It’s formated for Mac and I currently use a PC so I haven’t tried plugging it in. A lot of the work I did in the first ten years of this century was done on a Mac. The art always started as graphite and ink on paper and then had photoshop magic applied to it. I’ve got the original drawings in big metal flat files but the art that got published looks different.

Earlier this year I realized that I’d sent most of those illustrations to the editors and publishers via email and I’ve never deleted any personal emails. So I’ve tracked down a lot of that older art and will be showing it in future galleries. I found the two black and white illustrations in the above gallery in my emails.

The first three images, however, I couldn’t locate in my gmail archive. AOL has long since deleted all my old emals. At first they didn’t appear to be on the current Delta Green site but, after doing some obsessive google searching and some sort of back door poking around on DG I found them in an archive. Huzzah!

There are a lot of stories that feature some sort of organization whose mission is to defend the “correct” timeline, to make sure that history works itself out the way that it is “supposed to”. Bleah. How about an organization whose mission is to create timelines where history works itself out in the best ways for the most people?

Local News

Last week, in one of our stand up meetings at USPS, we were reminded that we, the letter carriers were not supposed to talk to the press. That if a member of the press attempted to engage us in conversation we were to refer him/her to management. Also, while we were in uniform, we were not to engage in political discussions with anyone lest they assume that our views represented those of the USPS. We were also to be careful not to express politcal opinions on social media in such a way as to lead people to believe that our views represented those of the USPS.

Sigh.

To be clear, anything I write here about my job at USPS is just my experience and my opinion. I like to assume that those of you who read these newsletters recognize this but, on the off chance you don’t, I AM NOT A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE POST OFFICE. I’m just a guy who works there. In my opinion, the USPS can’t actually have an opinion since it’s an organization. Organizations are not people. The people in charge of organizations may claim that their opinion represents the opinion of the organization but that’s just a fiction.

Anyway.

The most interesting part about the day job right now is that I have a new T6. USPS delivers mail six days a week. Regular carriers work and deliver theri route five days a week. A T6 is the person who delivers the route on the regular carrier’s day off. My last T6 had medical issues that prevented them from delivering my route on a regular basis. My new T6 is healthy and detail oriented. More detail oriented than I am, actually. And that’s good. It means I’m updating labels in mailboxes and doing maintenance on my route that I’d let slide. I keep most of my customer changes in my head. Having another person who has to regularly work my route reminds me that I should communicate customer changes in clear, written methods. It’s only polite.

We’ve also moved our start time from 7 am to 7:30 am. I’m not a fan but I’m adjusting.

I’ve left my alarm at 4 am. I get up. Drink coffee Write. Do computer art or make products in either my Zazzle or my Redbubble stores. I’ve updated my various websites to include a “store” page with links to each. This week I spent most of my store time working on an Oz Squad collection for Zazzle. Oz Squad is Steve Ahlquist’s creature but, as a fan and sometime collaborator, I try to find ways to keep the brand active.

so here's What I'm Pissed About Today

they made ben the historian of the losers when in the book ( and in the 199O mini series !! ) it's mike who carries that title, he's homeschooled so he learns differently and about different things to the other kids from derry so i'm mad because mike deserved more screen time in chapter 1

but then

THEN

they have the audacity to make chapter 2 mike seem fuckin crazy. they make him seem like he took part in the taking of the root with the Shokopiwah because he's a druggie.

that's not true

mike took the root because he wanted to learn he knew it was the only way he could. mike stored all those peices of paper and information in his loft because he was learning as he did or rather was supposed to when he was younger on the history of derry but they gave role to ben for some reason. he's also living in the library because he owns it. in the mini series he has his own house, i can't quite remember where he is in the book but either way chapter two made him seem like he was living there because he can't let go because he's crazy.

now don't get me wrong, i love ben a lot, he's a brilliant character but the injustice done on mike isn't right when he was a bigger part of the losers and not fucking crazy

"A judge Monday found Johnson & Johnson responsible for fueling Oklahoma’s opioid crisis, ordering the health care company to pay $572 million to remedy the devastation wrought by the epidemic on the state and its residents.

..."Cleveland County District Judge Thad Balkman’s landmark decision is the first to hold a drugmaker culpable for the fallout of years of liberal opioid dispensing that began in the late 199os, sparking a nationwide epidemic of overdose deaths and addiction. More than 400,000 people have died of overdoses from painkillers, heroin and illegal fentanyl since 1999.

..."'The opioid crisis has ravaged the state of Oklahoma and must be abated immediately,' Balkman said, reading part of his decision aloud from the bench Monday afternoon.

"'As a matter of law, I find that defendants’ actions caused harm, and those harms are the kinds recognized by [state law] because those actions annoyed, injured or endangered the comfort, repose, health or safety of Oklahomans,' he wrote in the decision.

"With more than 40 states lined up to pursue similar claims against the pharmaceutical industry, the ruling in the first state case to go to trial could influence both side’s strategies in the months and years to come. Plaintiffs’ attorneys around the country cheered the decision, saying they hoped it would serve as a bellwether for an enormous federal lawsuit brought by nearly 2,000 cities, counties, Native American tribes and others, which is scheduled to begin in October.

..."Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter (R) brought suit in 2017 against three major drug companies, accusing them of creating 'a public nuisance' by showering the state with opioids, while downplaying the drugs’ addictive potential and persuading physicians to use them even for minor aches and pains. Before the late 1990s, physicians reserved the powerful drugs primarily for cancer and post-surgical pain and end-of-life care.

"More than 6,000 Oklahomans have died of painkiller overdoses since 2000, the state charged in court papers, as the number of opioid prescriptions dispensed by pharmacies reached 479 every hour in 2017.

..."Johnson & Johnson’s products — two prescription opioid pills and a fentanyl skin patch sold by its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals — were a small part of the painkillers consumed in Oklahoma. But Hunter painted the company as a 'kingpin' of the drug trade because two other companies it owned grew, processed and supplied 60 percent of the ingredients in painkillers sold by most drug companies.

"'At the root of this crisis was Johnson & Johnson, a company that literally created the poppy that became the source of the opioid crisis,' the state charged.

"The state also said that Johnson & Johnson took active part in the pharmaceutical industry’s effort to change doctors’ reluctance to prescribe opioids by mounting an aggressive misinformation campaign that targeted the least knowledgeable physicians.

..."Oklahoma settled in March with Purdue Pharma, manufacturer of OxyContin, accepting $270 million from the company and its owners, the Sackler family. Album Review: Sigh - Heir to Despair

Sigh is a black/avant-garde metal band from Japan that formed in 199o and have released 11 studio albums and five EPs. A seminal band to the Japanese black metal scene (and to Japanese extreme metal in general), Sigh’s roots stretch all the way back to the dawn of second wave black metal, initially being signed to Euronymous’s record label Deathlike Silence Productions, with whom they released their debut album, Scorn Defeat, on in 1993. However, while that album was indeed heavily influenced by the classic early Norwegian black metal bands, as early as their second album, Infidel Art, the band showed a clear penchant for experimentation, developing independent elements that would come to characterize the band going forward. By Sigh’s very next album, Hail Horror Hail, the band had perfected those ideas and brought them all together into a cohesive whole, producing an instant classic of progressive black metal. The progressive elements were ramped up even further on Sigh’s fifth album, Imaginary Soundscape, featuring, among other things, frequent, prominent synth lines that sound like a funkier, more worldly influenced Keith Emerson, and, to this day, the album is one of the most highly revered black metal albums in both progressive and avant-garde circles. On each of their succeeding five albums, the band continued to tweak with their sound, albeit more subtly than they did on their first five. This constant drive to keep playing around with their style has continuously made Sigh one of the most fresh and interesting bands in metal, and black metal especially.

This trend doesn’t abate on Heir to Despair, and, in fact, in a number of ways, is Sigh at their most different and experimental since Imaginary Soundscape. Gallows Gallery and Hangman’s Hymn saw Sigh play in a more melodic and symphonic, albeit more straightforward way, while Scenes from Hell, In Somniphobia, and Graveward saw them play in a heavier, almost death metal influenced, albeit still grandiose way. Heir to Despair shows the band taking influence from classic progressive rock again, this time in Ian Anderson styled flute lines and overall Jethro Tull-esque atmosphere, as well as having the strongest electronic presence since Imaginary Soundscape itself. The album also occasionally has the melodicism of Gallows Gallery, stripped somewhat of the band’s usual symphonic atmosphere and almost reminiscent of classic melodic death metal, at least in the guitar leads. In addition, these different components, together with Sigh’s more typical defining elements, also weave in and out of the music, instead of being all played collectively like the band has typically done on their last few albums, giving Heir to Despair more sonic and emotional depth than they’ve typically achieved recently. Overall, Heir to Despair is yet another unique, innovative black metal album for Sigh, a band that already has a long streak of such albums to their name.

Many of my very favorite bands in any genre are progressive black metal bands, (or at least progressive metal bands that reside on the periphery of black metal) like In the Woods, Agalloch, and Enslaved. And Sigh is right up there in that list as well, the way the band combines classic progressive rock, Baroque classical, and electronica elements with a symphonic melodic black metal foundation, together with the way everything’s so seamlessly amalgamated, in the face of a diversity of sound that the vast majority of bands don’t even get close to, actually makes it seem like Sigh was almost specifically designed for me. Indeed, I love each of Sigh’s first 10 releases, and Heir to Despair is no exception. It’s hard to rank Sigh’s albums because of how subtly varied they are, but, in my opinion, I think Heir to Despair is Sigh’s best album since at least Hangman’s Hymn, and maybe even since Imaginary Soundscape. It’s a return to the more stylistically varied, yet still very cohesive sound that the band achieved on that album and better showcases all the different ways Sigh knows how to play than their most recent releases have done. Overall, Sigh has somehow managed to create yet another forward-thinking black metal album with Heir to Despair, an album that is the band’s best release in at least 11 years and maybe even one that, after a few years, will be judged to be one of the band’s absolute classics.
