Propaganda
Julie Andrews (The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins)—Oh where to start .... I'm not sure I even know how. She's just perfection. And it's not fair I can't bring post 70s work into this, because she just gets better and better, and her drag performance in to die for. But in the era I CAN talk about, she shows she has THE RANGE. Beautiful, feisty, funny, holding her own against Christopher Plummer, Paul Newman, Rock Hudson. Oh she's luminous.
Rocío Durcal (La chica del trébol, Más bonita que ninguna)— Her career spanned more than four decades and 50 albums and she successfully performed pop music, bolero, mariachi and romantic ballads. She was one of the greatest and most famous Hispanic singers of all time, widely successful in Mexico and Latin America, she earned the sobriquet of Reina de las Rancheras (Queen of Rancheras). This song: [link]
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Julie Andrews propaganda:
Tumblr media
"She has such a simple but amazing beauty to her. Not to mention her amazing and melodic singing voice!"
Tumblr media
"Roles like nannies and governesses can make us forget how attractive she was! A perfect combination of elegant and adorable, with the most incredible vocal range to boot!"
Tumblr media
"Besides having one of the most amazing singing voices ever to grace the silver screen, Julie always had an understated beauty to her that wasn't always shown off on screen. But it's there nonetheless because her characters managed to pull some of the hottest men ever to grace the screen."
Tumblr media
"The juxtaposition between carefree Maria and stern but fun Mary Poppins shows the power of the acting of this HOT VINTAGE MOVIE WOMAN"
Tumblr media
"Charming, genteel, incredibly charismatic, beautiful, and has an angelic singing voice to boot. Her screen roles as Maria in The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins are absolutely iconic for a reason and she originated several well-known Broadway roles before those."
Tumblr media
"the most beautiful woman 12 year old me had ever seen possibly"
"OMG OMG OMG she’s definitely been submitted before how could she NOT but!!!! I loveeee her so muchhhh rahhhh prebby!!!! cool!!!! mary poppins the beloved <33333 some people dislike it but I love jolly holiday so much because it IS a jolly holiday with Mary!!! no wonder that it’s Mary that we love!!!!!"
Tumblr media
"I know many people who were taught in singing lessons "when in doubt, pronounce words how julie andrews would pronounce them." THATS CALLED INFLUENCE. THATS CALLED MOTHERING THOUSANDS."

So i went to Käärijäs Ähtäri gig: what i can remember atm:
Tumblr media
There he is. As you can tell im a real photographer<3
First of all great show!! He said that the representative who asked him to come there was hesitant because Ä-clubi is tiny in comparison to like liverpool and helsinki ice hall but jere said that this was even better (he is out of his mind but im glad he came)
Tbh i dont have a lot of pics or any videos because im short and i got these two trees in front of me also i wanted to enjoy the thing in present
That one person who asked him to draw a tattoo for them got it! They asked for ”pillu ja nimmari” (cunt and signature) i hope they post it somewhere when they get it.
Someone else had a käärijä tattoo they got for 70€ He was pretty amazed that someone had a käärijä tattoo. More like blown away really but made a joke about it not being expensive
Three bras and one pair of pants were thrown on the stage. The pants were size XS lol also he did put one bra on briefly and i tried to get a pictire for yall but failed sorry :(
Tumblr media
This was also a thing that happened.
Some person had been to 15 of his gigs within one year?? Dedication. Jere said thats more gigs than he even had had before this year.
At the beginning he asked who had started their summerbreak and then called those who didnt raise their hands unemployed and then he said HE is unemployed. Later he said his next real job will be as a panda in Ähtäri (ähtäri zoo has 2 pandas) and something like what if there was just a kärtsäri-otus (käärijä-creature) in there at the zoo wearing a bolero.
Also:
For jeres back enjoyers?

A screenshot of my own post bc i dont want to write it again its almost 2 at night<3

spanish music hcs for the gang because i'm latino and mentally ill:
darry curtis: bro TEARS up corridos. the first time steve showed him los tigres del norte he was nodding slightly, but i'll tell you he ATE UP the whole damn album the moment he left. same with vicente fernández, the moment he hears the grito in volver, volver he's a divorced dad with multiple kids that don't speak with him because they forgot spanish in america (not too far off to reality) his favorite song is hands down pedro y pablo, not that he'd admit it because the lyrics reminds him of himself and ponyboy and he cries every time
two-bit mathews: anything he can shake ass too. jk. but he really like reggaeton, especially daddy yankee. 9/10 times rompe is playing on full volume in his headphones. he's also chill with mexican party music. just. party music in general and he's eating that shit up. el sondito gave him a seizure in the best way possible fr. but rompe just hits different to his brain yknow
dallas winston: the first time he listened to gasolina he had an aneurysm. the second time and he was begging steve to tell him what the hell that genre was because it was fire. probably would tear up bad bunny, ozuna (😶), and a bunch of other reggaeton artists. tití me preguntó would have a special place in his heart, and every time he plays diles steve dies a little inside since it's basically dirty talk the song. but he doesn't have to know that. (and he'd probably play it anyways)
steve randle: ah the half mexican himself. he little bit of everything. to his friends, he's all dance music and bachata and reggaeton, but deep down he cannot get enough of señora music. ana gabriel, rocío dúrcal, yolanda del rio, he eats it up every time. and his love of boleros is genuinely concerning. he's like a 70 year old man with that taste. but he can't help but listen to eydie gormé's gorgeous voice, he just can't.
johnny cade: sad mexican mom/dad music. no se va, tu falta de querer, desvelado, he eats up the sad lyrics and sobbing out lyrics. it just feels powerful to his ears. he always smiling when listening to it too, and steve just watches in horror as he listens to amor eterno while giggling and shit. steve's always in his señora era when he's around him (not that he minds)
sodapop curtis: salsa and bachata (and reggae ofc) bro adolescentes orquestra does things to his brain dude. he is a proud romeo santos stan, he'd kiss that man on the mouth if given the chance. he just loves swaying to latin music, and he unironically loves the yoshi ai cover of la noche más linda. he forces steve to dance with him and steve (not so reluctantly) complies.
ponyboy curtis: indie spanish music. victor internet, cuco, juanpalitoschinos, juan pablo vega, he LOVES it. if he could have the lyrics of el rincón (chachachá) tattooed in his brain he would do it in a heart beat. he listens to shit like "el amor de tu vida tiene derecho encontrar el amor de su vida" and sodapop is already sleeping by the time he's finished the title. basically his music taste from english transfers to spanish.

pump up the volume (1990)
director: allan moyle
costume designer: michael abbot
production design: robb wilson king
set dec: tina treglia (peterson)
cinematographer: walt lloyd
Tumblr media
BEING WEIRD ISN'T ENOUGH not sure why i like this pin, but i like it.
Tumblr media
this film takes place on the cusp between the 80s and the 90s, but i loved that these kids drove these 60s/70s(?) cars, i think to signify that they were low income and couldn't afford modern cars? but i love the atmosphere in this shot.
Tumblr media
not the greatest screencap, but i adored everything janie (lala sloatman) wore. the cat-eye glasses, the oversized pink pearl earrings, the ponytail scarf. even though i related to nora's artsy side, i wanted to be janie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
mark (christian slater) is like two different people. at home, he wears cool retro bowling shirts embroidered with the name "dick" and sasses his parents, but at school he wears bland clothing (like he wants to blend into the background) and acts all shy.
i also just really loved mimi kennedy as mark's mom, marla, using a teacup to ash her cigarette into, i just thought it was so posh!
Tumblr media
again, loving janie's dangly statement earrings, and the colour combo with her floral bolero (?) and sweet pink dress. i didn't love nora's (samantha mathis) outfit as much, but i was intrigued by the piece she wears over her dress. it ties at the back of her neck, and i think again on her lower back, so it's like a... halter vest? the turtle necklace is pretty dope, and though you can't see it in this shot, she is also wearing purple and white striped tights.
Tumblr media
paige's (cheryl pollak) bedroom is a dream! the floral wallpaper and the white bed are so lovely, but the seafoam green radio really makes the colour scheme pop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
man i wish i had a teacher this cool! ellen greene as jan emerson (do they call her miss emerson in the movie? i can't remember), wears the coolest outfits, and she is introduced in this amazing mustard suit accessorized with a turquoise bolo tie! the look is amazing, but it also alerts us that this film takes place in arizona.
Tumblr media
paige, doing her WASP thing in an oversized sweater over a blouse, with a string of pearls. it's the necklace that does it for me.
Tumblr media
i mostly just wanted to see how many celebrities i could identify in this shot: keanu reeves, johnny depp, george michael, kirk cameron, corey haim, richard grieco... (stole this image from imdb as it was much clearer than my screenshot)
Tumblr media
i forgot that plaid wallpaper was a thing and i think it's due for a comeback. particularly loving the plaid (shirt) on plaid (wallpaper) in this scene, so cozy, like a cabin!
Tumblr media
so many things to love in this scene: number one, the heart curtains; number two, the kitten sweatshirt (the kittens look like they might be puffy and i can feel it in my mind); number three the "homework causes brain damage" sign on the wall--classic! number four, the clear lamp filled with gumballs? and the cow hanging from it! number five and six, the blue radio and the clear phone! i want one!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
did you notice that the tissue box in the highschool staff room is the same as the tissue box in the depressed student's room? do you think it was the same box?
Tumblr media
nora's room reminded me of my own room in highschool-- walls plastered with images, and plenty of candles. i think nora might have been one of the prototypes for the manic pixie dreamgirl.
Tumblr media
Believe It Or Not I Care
Tumblr media
mazz's (billy morrisette) denim and leather look is good.
Tumblr media
an example of one of mark's drab shirts, but also nora's completely adorable velvet blouse with a peter pan collar! also, i'm learning that the next time i wear a collared shirt, i need to add a long statement necklace.
Tumblr media
so this scene is near the end of the film, and i loved mark's shirt here. i also realized that it's more of a cooler, bolder look than he has previously worn to school, so i think it's supposed to symbolize mark coming out of his shell and revealing more of his true self at school/in public. look at me, i get things.
Tumblr media
finally, loving this floral blouse and braided leather suspender on miss emerson. i would probably wear this.
Tumblr media
BONUS here's a picture of drew barrymore at "an event" for pump up the volume (according to imdb), i'm assuming it's the premiere, just looking cool and badass. i need that jacket.
Tumblr media
another bonus: this adorable promo photo of christian & samantha <3
anyways, most of these pics are my own screenshots, but you should check out higher resolution images on imdb. i couldn't find any articles about the wardrobe in this film, but i did find this 30th anniversary article that was interesting.

Chavela Vargas
Chavela Vargas, was a mexican singer of traditional songs- rancheras to be exact. After a difficult childhood in Costa Rica, marked by illness, family conflicts and lack of affection, Chavela Vargas moved to Mexico at the age of seventeen, a country she adopted as her homeland. After performing various trades, at thirty she began her activity as a professional singer. In 1961 she released her first album, Noche de bohemia, under the direction of José Alfredo Jiménez. This work would be followed by a long list of albums, until completing the more than eighty that he recorded in his prolific musical career. In Mexico he met the best composers of the moment, and dated Frida Kahlo!!
Rebellious and bohemian, with her rough voice she dramatized rancheras, a genre traditionally sung by men. No one knew how to instill such lacerating passion into the lyrics of rancheras and boleros like her, enhancing the expression of spite, jealousy or anguish with the tearing of her voice. His interpretation of Macorina, a rebellious song from the 17th century, allowed him to play seduce the women in the audience by wearing masculine attire, smoking cigars and drinking tequila.
The excesses with alcohol, her lesbian love affairs, her intense friendships with Hollywood artists and intellectuals, her skills as a shaman, her retirement from the big stages at the end of the 70s and her triumphant return to the cinema, at the hands of the Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, made her a legend in life. With more than 60 years of age, and finally having overcome her addiction to alcohol, the singer lived in effect a second golden age from the 90s until her death.
Also before dying she had been touring in Spain, and she was set in dying in México. I don't remember if she was able to do so, but I do think her body is somewhere in the country. She is also famous for the frase: "We mexicans are born wherever the fuck we want" or los mexicanos nacemos donde se nos da la chingada gana
In a more personal note, she was the first queer latina celebrity I ever knew off.

More info on Ryan’s outfit!
Tumblr media
Today, tnbdirectory posted a translation (done by an anon) from the Katsura Exhibit event, and the topic was on character designs. We got a bit more information on Ryan’s S2 outfit:
Clothes: the inner layer is a long, seven-quarter length t-shirt covered by a gold bolero jacket made of a stretchy, metallic fabric
Now, here it says that Ryan is wearing a “bolero jacket,” which has some interesting history:
The open-fronted short jacket has its roots in the bullfighting rings of Spain. Before it entered the realm of womenswear, the bolero was designed for the toreadors of the early 19th century, who needed to wear something light, bright and easily discardable.
The long-sleeved collarless jacket eventually caught the eye of the female spectators, who deemed it a better match to their crinoline skirts than the long jacket style popular in the 1840s.
I love how this item of clothing started off as menswear, then women got inspired by it, and crafted similar garments on that. It’s a very fitting story of origin for our dear, Feminist(tm)Ryan, lol. Especially since, ever since that time, and into the 1980s, it was a style and article clothing very squarely in the womenswear category.
When I look at Ryan’s outfit, I feel like a crop top is more accurate. Especially since his “jacket” doesn’t have any buttons or zippers, and there is no opening at the front of the jacket, like there would be if this was a bolero jacket.
Let’s look at what the blog “A Brief Visual History of Men in Crop Tops” has to say about the topic:
According to the blog, Crop Tops Are For Guys, The crop top movement has been going strong since the 1970's.  Originally, the cropped shirt was created "by men for men" in early 70's when weight lifters began cutting off the bottom of their shirts to gets around Gym dress codes that banned shirtless men.... sneaky, sneaky!
I feel like everything about the above really fits Ryan’s personality well. Crop tops for men became popular in the 1970s. A likely time period when Ryan was a teen, just like Ivan and Karina. It would be a good indicator that he was around their same age range.
Anyway, those are my final thoughts on Ryan and his clothing choices, haha.
I’m also going to update my master post on their outfits with this information.

25?
did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year?
i started developing my band oc's, a 70s all girl occult rock band (think integrated like fanny and sounding like black sabbath/coven/70s pentagram, that stuff) and a story abt a doomy zombie girl but it's all so, so rough, nothing's set in stone
band is a quartet, no name yet:
toni bolero is the bassist and singer, butch(y) mexican/chicana (i don't even have their geography or timeline right) that looks like geezer with cliff's stache but in black, frontwoman* the way al cisneros fronts sleep. *toni's what you'd call genderweird but she can't quite put it into words, very dykey! but that's abt it for her, and tended to keep that to herself. reserved, but open to talk n talk n talk if she was in the mood and found the interviewer's questions interesting enough. the band broke up in the late 70's (i think late 1979) after the death of their keyboardist (more on her later), they released a last album in late 1980/early 1981 in memory of her and the band, with material they already had written down with her, kinda the way and justice for all was written; much heavier album, with losing their keyboardist they also lost their psychedelic element.
toni, after the band naturally fizzled out, was part of a thrash band for maybe a couple of years, only girl in that band. i'm not too sure abt what went on but one of the dudes hated her and one of the dudes got very close to her.
morgan cosgrove, the keybordist, was daughter of a forensics couple, or they owned a morgue, or something i don't remember how i arranged that. thing is, she became fascinated with death, dead bodies, decomposition, the afterlife, all that, she went to piano lessons as a kid to be distracted from the gruesomeness, she couldn't escape it but it gave her something to look forward to. i'm not too sure how she died but it was def after a gig, maybe barely after getting backstage. she was a lesbian and helped toni figure some stuff out abt herself, morgan was also the most mysterious i think,,, i don't think she did much press if any.
i don't wanna go anywhere with this really, i just want to explore the idea of an all-girl lezzy occult rock 70s band. i think could do some comics (no clue where to put them tho LOL) abt them since that's the best way to tell their story, i think. lesser-known 70s rock bands don't have as much info on them as, say, ledzep or sabbath, so i want things to be left up to interpretation.
now, the zombie girl story: i may situate in the late 2000's since i wanna reference dopethrone and early EW, but i also want it to be a rather atemporal story. it's in first person, i want it to be half a horror story, half some girl telling you abt her day. the protagonist is (tentatively) named mag, magdalene gottlieb was the name so she could call herself maggot but it's too religious to me LOL, and she talks about how she goes slowly and secretly rotting, she knows she's dying but everyone either fails to notice it or brushes it off as her being weird. i don't have much else built. it's a story in a similar tone to ginger snaps but with the solitude aspect to it.

In My San Diego Garden and Kitchen
Two of the fruit harvests finished last week. The Dorsett Golden espaliered apple tree provided 25 pounds of fruit. There will likely be a second smaller crop in the fall. About two-thirds has been processed but the apples hold well in the fridge.
The apricot tree yielded 50 pounds this year compared with 120 pounds last year. One tree died over the winter and another is waning. We did plant a replacement early low-chill apricot in January.
Apricot jam was a morning’s project last week. Only one batch this year with the smaller harvest.
Rhubarb is a great extender. My best example is a triple berry jam which also includes some rhubarb. The berries dominate but I don’t need as many. This week it extended various fruit sauces frozen for the next three seasons.
Fruit sauces for the freezer: apricot-applesauce, rhubarb-applesauce and rhubarb-guava-applesauce.
We gather enough strawberries for breakfast or a mixed fruit salad most days. The first marionberry ripened last week. It was perfect. We’re now hoping for sunny weather to decrease the chances of botrytis, a fungal disease which has taken the crop some years under cool, humid conditions. Predictions suggest sun and 70 degrees this week.
I pulled a few of the January planted Bolero carrots. The seed was pelletized and the rains plentiful. Some of the nicer carrots I’ve grown in recent years.
Check the What I’m Planting Now page as I transition to summer in the garden. Then head to Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Happy Acres Blog and see what garden bloggers around the world harvested last week.

3, 6 and 16?
Thank you!!!! sorry i took this long to do it!
3 - Put your playlist on shuffle and show the first 10 songs. No cheating.
i try to organize my playlist in albums (soundtrack, rock, oldies, 70s, etc, but this is a more... free organized album?) 1- the place i left behind / the deep dark woods 2- sharks / imagine dragons 3-dont let me be misunderstood / lana del rey 4- kotik / alexander rybak 5- brave new world / kalandra 6 - supermassive black hole / muse 7- a dangerous thing / aurora 8- in the woods somewhere / hozier 9- paranoid android / radiohead 10- I lied / lord huron
6 - Is there a song that you really liked as a child and don't like it as much now but would still get up and dance to it?
I tried to think about this, but... cant find a song yet? maybe style, 90s mom's music, red, green, hechizo, IDK, XD ohh, i liked a lot Charlie zaa bolero style, i was huge fan of his voice, i dont listen to it now, but when it plays in the radio, im inspired.
16 - If you have a favorite band or artist, tell us about how you got into them Los prisioneros is my fav band here in Chile, oldie but classic <3 thanks to my dad, and i loved the lyrics. "Estrechez de corazon" DUDE, if you respect yourself thats must be listen with higher volume. Electric light Orchestra , thanks to my dad as well, i used to say when i was a child or teenager "that disco sound its so silly", me now (High volume and screaming and silly dancing) ;" But I really want tonight to last forever, I really wanna be with you, Let the music play on down the line tonight", this band makes me happy, it can change my mood for a while and i love them.
and last, Loreena Mckennitt, canadian singer, I found her when I was full into LOTR when I was younger at school, ohhh her voice, for me its a muse, her old singles or albums were super pagan or medieval/celtic / pagan inspired, then started with more arabic sounds, amazing sound too, I can travel with her music.
