Heaven Official's Blessing
Is it surprising I giving you another #MXTX related review? Nope! Perhaps it's the Heaven Official's Blessing. Perhaps I'm dragging you down to hell-
If you don’t know how to continue living, then live for me. If you don’t know what meaning there is continuing to live, then for now, please use me as your reason to live, and treat me as your pillar to support you in life. Xie Lian was once upon a time the noble Crown Prince of Xian Le, a country that disappeared 800 years ago. He was born under a lucky star, yet after ascending to godhood at a…

i'm reading orv (omniscient reader's viewpoint) but I'm doing it on webtoon which is honestly just unbearable and painful KNOWING that the complete story is out there but still having to wait a week for each update T-T
I can't sacrifice the webnovel for the novel though because 1) I've gotten accustomed to the visual stimuli of characters and i barely remember any names and 2) the way the story is translated into English (i cannot read Korean) is so painful to my brain T-T
I need like... a veteran orv fan to spoil the storyline for me atp bc this is torture

i think this is the 2nd time i've decided the most logical way to enjoy a kind of awkward english translation is to edit over the wording until it looks good to me

there's something humbling about getting pulled into a webtoon to the point that i think, "damn, i really wanna know what happens next, i'm gonna find a translation of the webnovel this was adapted from and read ahead". but then i find it and it's like. 80% breasted-boobily tier shit. like i'm trying to be forgiving but poor translation cannot account for how bad it is. and that's when i realize that the comic was good because it replaced everything but the dialogue with sparkly watercolor shoujo art. the instant the dialogue isn't coming out of the sparkliest bitch i've ever seen it's not great either. i got bamboozled by sparkles. i'm no better than a magpie.

Yuri Isekai 'I'm in Love with the Villainess' Anime Offical Announced
Tumblr media
On Tuesday, a television anime adaptation of Inori's Yuri isekai series I'm in Love with the Villainess (Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou) was officially announced. According to the anime's official website and a PV for the series, the anime will premiere in 2023.
The I'm in Love with the Villainess anime is directed by Hideki Oba at Platinum Vision. The series will star Yuu Serizawa as Rae Taylor and Karin Nanami as Claire Francos.
Additional staff includes script and series composer Aumu Hisao, character designer Youko Satou, who will adapt the designs from the light novels and manga adaptation, illustrated by Hanagata and Aonoshimo, respectively, sound director Hajime Takakuwa, and music composition by Noriyuki Asakura and Usagi to Uma.
I’m in Love with the Villainess is a Yuri isekai series following Oohashi Rei, an ordinary office worker who awakens suddenly to find herself reincarnated as Rae Taylor, the protagonist from her favorite otome game. However, Rae has no interest in chasing any of the game’s original three romance options. She has eyes only for the main antagonist, the elite aristocrat Claire.
The series began as a webnovel by author Inori before being picked up for publication as a light novel series by GL Bunko. The series gained popularity, especially overseas, and has sold over 200,000 copies worldwide.
The digital light novel’s popularity led to a special print release in Japan, subtitled Revolution, and multiple adaptations, including a manga illustrated by Aonoshimo, which began serialization in Comic Yuri Hime in 2020. Inori also began publishing a spin-off webnovel, She’s so Cheeky for a Commoner (Heimin no Kuse ni Namaiki an!), which was adapted into a light novel by GL Bunko.

Autistic Anime Boys Round 3 Match 9
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Haru -
"Haruka, ever since seeing a waterfall as a child, has had an extremely autistic fondness towards water. Enough so, that early on in the days of the fandom, we joked he was watersexual. He does indeed almost see all water as a person, and personification of things is common in autism. He constantly talks about how the water feels and what it feels like to swim in water, something that could be sensory for him. He also doesn’t like being constricted in how he expresses his love for water and even has something of a breakdown during the second season (eternal summer) at having to finally choose to become a professional swimmer or to keep swimming freely in the water he loves so much. Haruka is also very expressionless and somewhat monotone and has been that way since he was a child. His close friends are shocked to see him loudly laugh at one point due to being tickled. He very much masks his emotions, which during season 2 becomes a point of contention from his close friends as he won’t tell them what’s wrong. As I somewhat mentioned before, he doesn’t like change and does not adapt to it very well at all and the main problems for his character for much of the series is that he has trouble confronting change and accepting it and learning to live with it. Anywho, he’s a great character, in my opinion, and deserves to make it far in this tournament. Thank you for reading."
Kim Dokja -
"kdj spends over a decade reading a webnovel and uses it as a form of escapism. SPOILERS him reading this book and forming such a deep attachment to it is the cause of literally every event in the book. his wish to be part of the story turns him into the equivalent of a god, and at the end of the story, he turns into a god (again? sort of?) and goes on to spend tens of thousands of years reading and re-reading in order to allow time to move END SPOILERS also he's gay for yjh."

Hello! I'm really sorry to bother you with some stupid questions but I'm a little bit confused. Can you tell me about the TGCF revised version and what to expect from it? I made my research a little bit but I'm not sure I get the full picture. I just finished reading all the novels in official EN translation and it bugs me a little that I just got everything settled in my brain and now...smth will be changed in the revised version? What does it mean for canon?
I'm sorry it I make no sense, just a little bit disoriented. Thank you for answering in advance!
Hello Anon!
I totally understand how confusing it could be! I'll try to help clear it up, so no worries!
There are two main versions of TGCF now:
Original/Serialized
Revised
The original webnovel was released in a serialized manner, and this is the one all existing printed translations are based on. Including the official EN translation! This is also what the manhua and donghua are adapting. It was never released as a printed version in mainland China.
The revised version was released in early 2023, in mainland China only (thus far). It has significant changes here and there such as: removal of some minor characters, revision of certain characters' backstories, fleshing out of some inter-character relationships, expansion of existing Hualian-centric scenes, several additional scenes (mainly Hualian-centric), modification of some arcs/plots (e.g. the Bloody Banquet is quite different -- all the way from the lead-up to the ending -- though the broad strokes of it remain similar to the original). Plus just a lot of general streamlining! However, the overall structure of the story and the main plot remains the same.
The printed revised version that was released in China is also a censored edition (for obvious reasons). There is no publicly available uncensored edition available for us to read. That being said... the audio drama is actually working on the uncensored revised version (which they got from MXTX directly, it seems)!
The AD is absolutely fantastic, and if you're interested in checking out the revised version, I HIGHLY recommend it. It's easily my favorite adaptation, by far. This is an old guide on how to purchase + listen, but it still mostly works (you can purchase the entire season with google pay now too). Follow this for enabling EN subs (MTL). There are folks doing fanTLs, but those are not yet complete and still in the very early episodes as of now.
Additionally, there is a fan translation for a few select chapters from the printed revised version, done by Clearnoodle256. Though while yes, it's censored, the plot stuff and extra scenes are absolutely amazing. There's a lot of extra insight into Hualian especially, but also other characters like Lang Qianqiu! Check it out here!
If you'd like more information, I also made a twitter thread about the different versions, but it's similar to what I have already outlined here!
MXTX has said that both versions are just as "canonical" as each other, and fans are welcome to pick-and-choose aspects of both. Personally, I adore what I have seen and heard of the revised version thus far (though there are a few parts where I prefer the original ver). It doesn't feel like a whole new story, but more like seeing the same story with fresh eyes and getting a lot more details! It's very exciting to be able to somehow experience TGCF all over again! 💖

i think one big aspect about isekai that's underdiscussed is that a lot of them are written in what's basically a free-for-all webnovel site for everyone to see
the western equivalent to this would be like ao3 or wattpad but with the capital incentive that the stuff that gets really popular will have comics/animated adaptations years down the line, so the cycle of ripping off from others in more extreme or generic ways accelerates since everyone can see what's getting popular on a daily basis
(there's already that trend about filing off the serial numbers on fanfics and publishing them, but i'm not as caught up on that since it's outside my sphere of interests)

I DODNT MEAN TO SEND THAT EARLY. 😭 SORRY.
I wanted to ask how you thought the orv webtoon compared to the novel? Just curious because I've only read like a quarter of the novel and haven't tried out the webtoon
Tumblr media
really really funny cutoff ask there
anyway im deeply torn by the orv webtoon because on paper it's a very True adaptation to the source material, and a lot more accessible and comprehensible to a lot people than the really rough english tl of the webnovel is. but i don't like anything about it. for starters i don't think the Truest adaptation of a thing is necessarily the best one. i also hate the art, and for a comic thats a pretty big point against it. everyone is a paper-white stick figure, i find the character designs fundamentally unappealing, and the entire comic is often really weirdly gray and muddy in a way i dont think is necessary at all. it looks like every other isekai webtoon on the market.
WHICH. is really fun on a meta level. orv Appearing to be a generic rpglit power fantasy and then closing the jaws of its trap on unsuspecting readers is really good. but man this story has some insane potential for visuals that i know itll never reach due to this lameass art
i also think that fundamentally, the fact that there is no way to have a comic be in First Person undercuts a lot of what orv is trying to do. and not only that but iirc they actively cut a lot of kim dokja's internal narration that's pretty critical to characterizing him. he really does come off a lot more like that cliched overpowered MC in the webtoon, IMO. at least what i've read of it which is not a huge amount because. as stated. i don't like it
basically in order for orv to hit you need to become intimately acquainted with but still fundamentally alienated from Kim Dokja's Twisted Mind for orv to land right and i don't think it's possible to really accomplish that outside of a written work. orv is on a meta-level designed to be a novel and making it into something that isn't a novel means you're not reading orv anymore. but also i want as many people to read it as possible and beggars cant really be choosers. so yeah. its complicated.

this is like. so non-important compared to all my other grievances with the webcomic but like. the reasons kim hyunsoo gives for changing javier's hair from silver to mint. lol. lmao even.
they're so,, lazy,,,,
Tumblr media
that sounds like a skill issue my dude :/
i mean the novel illustrations did it perfectly well imo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'but nali' i hear you say 'those are novel illustrations, where there's only one drawing per chapter. of course it's more difficult to do in a webcomic'
and sure. you're right. it's very different in a webcomic. in fact i am almost certain that no webcomic has ever had a protagonist with silver hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
not a single webcomic ever has done that before. truly. a completely unrealistic expectation to have.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
really it's not like silver hair is one of the most popular tropes in manhwa and almost every other webcomic has one of those
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
clearly. this was a completely impossible thing to ask of an adaptation. it's not like it's one of the most iconic parts of our protagonist's design. it's not like it's mentioned almost every single time javier is onscreen.
really. what a truly necessary change.
which. speaking of.
Tumblr media
now, correct me if i'm wrong. but shouldn't your deuteragonist, the very first character your character meets, your second main character's design,,, more important than a secondary character that isn't introduced like,,, more than a hundred episodes later???
like. i don't think we even get told what color lloyd's hair is. but god does the novel mention that habiel has silver hair every five minutes.
i'm sorry i just think that if you're gonna adapt something the very least thing you could do is try to be faithful to one of the very few character descriptions we ever get! especially that of your goddamn main character!
how come a secondary character takes precedence over him?? why not change that character's hair color then???
and even then. if your character design skills suck so much that two characters having the same hair color is enough to make them look too similar perhaps there's a bigger problem here.
i just,,,, i am almost certain i know what character he's speaking of. maybe even two characters. hell maybe even three. but fucking guess what. the webnovel illustrations already did designs for those characters. it gave them all silver hair. and there was No Issue at all because their designs were so distinct from one another that at no point was there any doubt of who was who. because that's what good character design is about.
like. that's such a stupid reason oh my godddd if you're gonna pull that bs then what's your excuse for all those other characters with brown hair. are you not worried they're gonna overlap because their hair color is the same. i mean you made silurian's brown hair darker so now it matches like 90% of your background characters. do their design not overlap like that.
i'm just!! it's such a stupid thing to get mad about!! especially when there's far more egregious changes being made but like!! it just,,, it shows the kind of attitude the people adapting tged into a webcomic have towards the source material
it's not about the hair color. i mean it is but there's more to it. it's about how the artists feel comfortable disregarding parts of the novel and canon because it's more convenient to them. it's about how they prefer to focus on unimportant stuff that gets them a few laughs rather than put a little bit of effort into getting their characters right. it's about how they waste entire panels into making ugly faces and repetitive jokes rather than take a bit of time to get the hair color of their protagonist correctly.
it is,, disappointing i guess :/
and because i'm petty. here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that's literally it. that's all kim hyunsoo had to do. it's such a tiny detail and yet. couldn't be bothered to get it right lol

Finally, after years, some movement on the adaptation of Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, a rare het webnovel I adore.
If this casting becomes true, I am surprisingly pleased. My rewatch of The King's Woman reminded me that Dilraba can be vvv good when she wants to be, and while I don't tend to buy her as an avenging non-stop warrior (so was not happy with that rumor of her being cast as some sort of demon general in a drama thing), she can play Shen Miao, who is more elegant and scheming and not non-stop consumed with grief and/or rage and/or vengeance.
And Deng Wei has got a lot of good will from me for LYF and he's certainly pretty enough to be the ML and can portray him just fine.
So bring it on!

you just reblogged one of my endless orv reblogs with 'to watch maybe' so I had to infodump a bit
orv is Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, an excellent korean webnovel. it is LONG. The novel proper has been finished for years, but the side stories are still ongoing (it's more like a sequel at this point). Lightnovelworld.com has a decent translation, and an official english translation is announced but not out yet.
there is a webtoon adaptation from which the pictures are from. It started good and is getting better and prettier all the time, which is great. But since ORV is LONG it won't finish for years and years, which is sad.
It's going to be adapted into five movies, the first of which will be out next year. There has been talk of an animated adaptation as well, but I couldn't find official confirmation anywhere.
The basic premise is that the book our main character was reading comes to life, and he is determined to direct it to a better ending than canon. That book was an apocalyptic fantasy novel.
Orv has incredible worldbuilding and an amazing cast, all with their vivid personalities and time to shine. It has heavy focus on close platonic relationships.
It is incredibly layered, and some of those layers won't reveal themselves until you've finished it. It is also incredibly meta. The relationship between a reader and the stories they love is a core theme.
One of the reasons I'm insane about orv is this: This is a book that loves it's readers. It takes you gently by the hand and tells you that you matter, that you're worth everything. That to be a reader is something amazing, and this author and this world love you.
oh man that does in fact sound absolutely baller. I've seen it around on my dash enough that I'd picked up bits and pieces of all this, but I hadn't actually seen any explanations anywhere, just vibes and character art. thanks for the rundown, this sounds so cool!

Rose illustration by @wraith_ly on twitter!
Propaganda from submitters Under Cut
Rose Thorburn Jr.
uhh. i can't actually give or read full rose propaganda because i haven't actually. Finished reading the book. and i guarantee she does some real heinous shit when she gets back that i don't know about yet. but rose fucking sweep. rose thorburn kill them with demons.
She certainly doesn't get *less* jerkish across the story, I can tell you that
Rose is literally responsible for multiple people getting CONSUMED BY DEMONS. She was LITERALLY designed to be a Machiavellian piece of shit and it’s only by pure luck that she has any kind of heart or compassion, greatest girlboss I’ve ever seen, bless her heart (she deserves hell)
Rose thorburn was given a sapient clone of her but if she was a better person (and also a guy) to use as a sacrificial lamb slash meatshield against the assembled magical and karmic forces attempting to kill her for her family's history of using demons for Evil Shit & in response she knowingly manipulated him towards those ends while selfishly seeking emotional comfort from him, e.g forcibly hugging him despite being fully aware that he has intense trauma around touch + finds it triggering. she is a cunt. she is an icon. she is knowingly allowing herself to be possessed by the literal incarnation of conquest because it's making her better at being a cunt. and that's just in the part of the obscenely long webnovel i have actually finished thus far
Dorian Gray
Look okay every film adaptation has gotten this wrong but in the original book Dorian has blond hair and blue eyes and is described as looking "like an angel." also his whole thing is that he ends up being a hedonistic brat and is canonically so mean to he girlfriend sybil at one point that she... uh... vacates the story with some poison. he also killed his totally not gay buddy basil after he found the portrait.
the original hedonistic brat. my son that i am always disappointed in. had two shots at love and decided to be a dick about it. has a haunted portrait that gets uglier each time he sins. what a guy, really.
Dorian drove a lovely young girl to suicide and I think that's worse than men dying
Dorian killed the man that was in love with him (Basil) because he found out about the painting and didn’t want to get exposed as being the horrible person that he is. Also all the stuff with Sybil (the girl he manipulated and drove to suicide) Also Sybil’s brother is so righteously angry at Dorian for the event that he hunts Dorian down to kill him. He doesn’t succeed cause dorian destroys the painting first. Like, even his last stand was a bitch move. Dorian was a coward to the end and died alone in an attic after pushing everyone that loved him away with his terrible actions.
