#And I know it makes Atsushi look awful‚ but like. Atsushi *is* selfish.

Always emotional about the fact that Atsushi never feels the need to force himself to be okay whenever he's around Akutagawa
YES!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!! EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look I already elaborated on this a bit in the tags here before but. The thing is that Atsushi doesn't even realize that he's so relieved to have found a guy that sucks so bad, who is his enemy and who he doesn't fear, he can finally drop the good guy facade he feels like he has to put up as a defense mechanism with everyone else. AND IT'S SO GOOD. And it's so good to see Atsushi's true colors, this snarky and even cocky I'd dare say side of him that he so rarely shows. And the fact that Akutagawa is the only one that can bring it to light!!! Just. AAAAAAAAHH.

Snow Days with (some of) the BSD Boys
Snow Days With (some of) The BSD Boys
a/n: idk why but my christmas posts do so well and I want to write again, so here I am. feel free to request I do this for more characters
Warnings: fem implied (? maybe ?) no prns used, dazai SLIGHTLY suggestive
Tumblr media
Chuuya:
He is kind of a surprise, because he wants to make you happy. So when it started to get into the winter season, he wants to do all the cheesy Christmas stuff with you. He loves the snow and thinks it is really beautiful, but he HATES the cold. Even with his jacket and constantly having you to cuddle up next to, he is still cold.
So Chuuya really likes to have an inside snow day. He enjoys the fireplace and hot chocolate (wine of course too). He is often found cuddling up with you in a loveseat close to the fire place.
"Hey little lamb, are you enjoying yourself?" "Mhm! Of course I am, Chuuya."
When the cold snow starts falling and covering the ground in a new fresh sheet of snow, Chuuya will always keep you warm in his high rise apartment, looking over the people of Yokohama.
Dazai:
Where do I even start with him. He loves all things winter, and he especially likes people watching. Dazai likes going to the bar and watching everyone chat about their busy holidays back home in Yokohama. It almost reminds him of this time of year when Oda was still around.
Now hear me out, in the spirit of the holiday, Dazai often takes you shopping to stores all around the city. But aside from buying gifts and snacks for you, he wants you to help him pick out gifts for Kenji and Kyouka. And orphans in the local areas. Dazai knows that it's what Oda would do and it gives Dazai a warm sense of accomplishment. He also loves to watch you in awe over all the new toys that come out every year always bigger and better than the last.
He also gets baby fever sometimes because he genuinely loves seeing you interact with the kids and looking at all the baby clothes etc. So sometimes Dazai does flirt and tease you during this season ;).
Atsushi:
Everyone's favorite tiger! He really loves the snow! Especially now that he feels safe in his apartment and has nice warm clothes. Atsushi will absolutely look at you like a begging puppy to go build snowmen with him. Given that he hasn't experienced christmas like most other people, Atsushi will take you out to the fountain and store fronts to look at all of the beautiful lights.
Atsushi is a clumsy romantic, he catches himself staring at the lights reflections in your eyes. Or the way that snowflakes stay in your hair. Don't even get him started on the rosy tint on your cheeks. He definitely grabs your face (gently) and kisses you. (yes he is nervous, but the confidence is hot).
Also! Always making you handmade snowflakes, gifts, cards etc.
Ranpo:
This one is easy, he takes you out for warm drinks. Hot cocoa, coffee and pastries. He might seem selfish but he knows your bakery order by heart and would never make you pay (especially if you don't work at the agency with him). He constantly has candy in his pockets and when kids come up to him for having it, he will give you a reluctant sigh and give them one of his least favorites from his pocket.
Ranpo also really likes to stay in and watch movies with you. Mainly mystery ones, bonus points if they are holiday themed. He likes to watch with lots of snacks and talk to you about how very easy it is for him to see right through the plot of the movie. Sometimes if you are really into the movie you can try and debate with him on what the ending will be or who the villain is. Ranpo will SOMETIMES let you win, but other times it is just bonding for you two. Being close and talking (and snacking).
Fyodor:
Fyodor is absolutely no stranger to snow, but due to him being an enemy of the state essentially he doesn't go out a lot. Especially because he doesn't want to put you in danger. I mean, it is shocking enough that he wanted an s/o, so he isn't going to use you as some kind of bait or parts of his schemes.
I think he is a big fan of watching snow from afar, and not really getting into it. And he'll never admit it but he loves when you steal his warm clothes (just don't stain it). He will cook you warm and delicious meals from back home and light beautiful candles.
You were the first to insist on decorating, but he grew to really enjoy watching you get tangled up in garland and sparkling ornaments. Plus he's tall and enjoys towering over you to help put the topper of your choice on the very tippy top of the tree.
Fyodor also enjoys reading you stories, his voice is smooth and soothing while still keeping you interested in the story. Sometimes he does want you to fall asleep in his lap though.

Point of No Return (Raised Together AU)
Dazai Osamu is twelve years old when he commits his first real crime.
In the future, he will rarely remember crimes of this magnitude, regardless of how bloody or brutal they will end up being- In the end, they all blur together, and when asked, he’d say he couldn’t care more about one or the other. Which man died screaming over what isn’t something that affects him.
(In the far future, he will rarely remember crimes of this magnitude, though not for lack of trying, and not for lack of regret.)
But this crime- His first crime- Will always, always stick with him.
(This crime, even in the far future, is one he feels no true regret over.)
He remembers that it began with blood.
xxx——xxx——xxx
Nakajima Atsushi has been gone for twenty-two hours, thirty-four minutes, and seventeen seconds by the time Dazai decides that he needs to figure out where the Headmaster has taken his closest- And only, if he’s being honest- Friend.
(Yes, he had been keeping track of the time.
Yes, he has not learned That Man’s name. He refuses to.)
It was, admittedly, a very risky decision on his part- After all, if he was caught after hours, looking for the Headmaster’s favorite unfavorite child, it wouldn’t be him that would get punished. He learned, after the first few times he tried to intervene, about how That Man seemed to enjoy punishing Atsushi for “corrupting” the other children.
(He remembers when he realized. The stench of burnt flesh still feels like it clings to him, and the echos of Atsushi’s screams ring in his ears when he’s alone.
Dazai has found that all he can do for him is be well once they see each other again. Someone needs to clean his wounds.)
Nonetheless, finding Atsushi was a risk he had to take- Punishments normally took half of this time at most, provided it wasn’t a full moon (Look into that, he reminds himself, why then- But no, no, not important-). That it was taking this long over something so stupid was… Concerning.
He slips out of his room.
xxx——xxx——xxx
It doesn’t take Dazai much longer to figure out where That Man has placed Atsushi, though getting there is another matter entirely- The orphanage is a big place, after all, and if he gives away what he’s trying to do, it could make things worse.
Luckily, he doesn’t have to find any keys once he gets there- Dazai has long become used to picking locks, and the ones at the orphanage are hardly new.
The basement door creaks as it swings open, and he holds his breath for what must be a minute while he waits and sees if anyone heard.
Nothing.
He sneaks down the stairs.
(It was what he found at the bottom that broke him.)
xxx——xxx——xxx
The first thing he notices is that Atsushi is curled up in the center of the room, shaking like a leaf and either entirely unaware of his presence or too terrified to care.
The second is the small, dark puddle under Atsushi’s tiny body.
It smells like rusted iron.
He wastes no time at all in going to his side, and the dull noises of his feet hitting the floor don’t bother him. He doesn’t have to worry about their caretakers hearing him down here.
(God knows they’d complain about having to hear the screams.)
“Atsushi,” he does his best to keep too much emotion out of his voice, because that isn’t what he needs, right now. “Atsushi, are you- Can you-“
He chokes back the obvious questions of ‘Are you okay’ or ‘Can you stand’ because the obvious answer is no, but he needs to say something-
“Atsushi, can you see me right now?”
It takes a frightening few moments for the silver haired boy to even register his words, and another few moments for him to respond, but when the glaze recedes from his eyes, just a bit, and he nods, Dazai sighs in relief.
“Good. That’s- That’s good,” he swallowed. “Can you- Talk?”
Another pause, and Atsushi coughs, voice weak, but-
“Ye-es. Yes, I can- I can talk, Osamu-san.”
He sounds like he’s been screaming.
“Sorry for taking so… So long-“
“It’s fine, it isn’t your fault, don’t apologize- Here, I’ll help you up-“
Atsushi freezes, grip going tight, and his mouth opens to respond, but Dazai is already lifting him up, and-
There’s a pained, hazy whine, and Dazai freezes. Looks down.
Ah.
Why didn’t I look more closely?
Dazai has found the source of the blood, it seems- It seeps from a clearly painful wound on Atsushi’s foot, reopened from its attempts to close thanks to Dazai’s efforts.
Not that it could close.
It’s been nailed to the ground, after all. And the nail hasn’t been removed.
He stares, eyes blank. Tremors run up and down Atsushi’s body, and he realizes, belatedly, that he’s still holding him.
Very, very gently, he sets him down, doing his best to be mindful of his foot.
He stares again.
They’d nailed his foot his-
They’d shoved and nail to it and just-
They’d-
Dazai thinks, somewhat morbidly, that the nail makes Atsushi’s foot look even smaller than it is.
It probably went through bone.
It must’ve hurt so much.
There’s so much blood-
He blinks, feeling sluggish and hazy. Atsushi. Right. He needs to- He needs to make sure he’s okay. He needs to get the nail out.
There’s a hammer, not too far away. Just out of Atsushi’s reach, actually.
Dazai picks it up, noting, distantly, that there’s blood on the head.
He thinks he knows what this was for.
Luckily, the hammer can be used to remove the nails. Dazai doesn’t know if he could do it with his fingers.
“I’m going-“ his voice sounds hoarse. He clears his throat. “I’m going to try to… Remove the nail. Okay, Atsushi?”
He gets a blank stare in response.
“Atsushi?”
The boy jumps this time, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. He nods, though, hands shaking.
It’s silent, and Dazai doesn’t know why he can’t move his body.
“They. He. He tried to make me- To make me h-hammer it in myse-“ Atsushi chokes on his own words, shaky violently, now. “I c-couldn’t- The hammer- I-“
“It’s okay.”
Dazai’s own voice sounds hollow, to his ears. Atsushi looks up at him, tears trailing down his face, eyes wide.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to say anything.”
He kneels down, movements careful, and slots the hammer over the nail, doing his best to ignore how firmly it settles against Atsushi’s skin.
That Man really drove it in-
Hands tighten on his shoulders, and before he can think too deeply about anything, he pulls the hammer up and away from Atsushi’s foot.
Then he throws it, as hard as he can, to the other side if the basement.
Dazai doesn’t remember being this angry before.
“It’s okay,” he says again, voice dull. “It’s okay. I’ve got you. It’s okay-“
Atsushi cries.
xxx——xxx——xxx
Atsushi liked to tell him about the books he read, in the quiet of the library, as he hid from the other children, or even the adults. He talked about fantasies of children escaping their tormentors, of candy houses in the woods, about true love born and raised at midnight.
(“Osamu-san,” he’d wondered aloud one night, rain pounding at their thin walls as the cold seeped into their bones, “Osamu-san, wouldn’t it be nice if that was us?”
It’s a foolish notion, Dazai knows it is, but he’s never been one to keep Atsushi from the things that keep him alive and close by, selfish as that may be.
“It would be, he’d replied, “Maybe it could be, one day.”
Atsushi had giggled, then, the sound muffled by his hands and the cold and the pain weeping through their bodies like mud.
It was a nice sound.)
He talked, sometimes, about the characters being mad. He’d mentioned that sometimes, they were so mad they saw red, so angry that they couldn’t control themselves.
So furious they couldn’t think straight.
Dazai is not seeing red. He is perfectly in control, and he is, most definitely, thinking straight.
He considers, for a moment, if this makes him a monster, for what he’s about to do next.
No, he thinks. No.
It doesn’t.
Because a monster is shaped like a grown man with an awful haircut who takes and takes and hurts and hurts, who targets the only goddamn person in the world that Dazai cares about.
A monster uses a god-shaped hole to justify his actions.
And a monster is going to be dead by day’s end, because Dazai is going to kill it.
xxx——xxx——xxx
It isn’t as easy as simply up and leaving Atsushi to do the deed, however- His friend is in no condition to stay with him while he does what he has to do.
Even now, Dazai can see the small tremors running up and down his body, and choked, raspy wheezes pull their way from his throat. The aftershocks of his crying fit, no doubt.
He purses his lips, tucking the smaller boy under his chin as he thought.
Perhaps… He could leave him down here? Not permanently, of course- They’d need to escape- But sound didn’t travel well between the basement and the main house, so he wouldn’t have to hear anything.
The key would be making sure he didn’t have to look at the source of his trauma when he was alone.
Dazai hummed under his breath, eyes mapping out what he could see in the darkness- There was a cage, at the far back, but there were manacles there, and he doesn’t fancy having Atsushi wait for him inside of iron bars, so that’s a no. The corner to the left of the cage is also out, because that’s where he’d thrown the hammer and nail. Definitely not the center of the room, because there was still a blood puddle there…
His eyes fell on the right corner, right behind the rickety stairs that led into the basement.
It was dark, so he doesn’t think Atsushi would be forced to see the rest of the area, even if he turned around. It’s positioning meant that it would hide him from any adults who came down the stairs to investigate, though Dazai hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
Definitely not perfect, but it would have to do.
“Atsushi,” he murmured. His voice was still dull, and he winced. “Atsushi, I’m going to move us, alright?”
There wasn’t a verbal response, but he felt the boy nod his head as much as he could, with it still tucked under Dazai’s chin. He took that for consent and, after a moment to brace them both, he lifted him halfway off the ground, keeping a careful arm around his waist so he didn’t fall.
(As much as Dazai would love to simply carry him, the orphanage hardly feeds them enough for him to be able to. He’d just exhaust himself, and he couldn’t be tired.
Not now.)
Once they’d moved, Dazai took great care in positioning Atsushi so that his back was to the center of the room. He went to pull away, then, but the panicked whine he got in response made him hesitate.
“Don’t leave. Please, please don’t leave me alone Osamu-“
“I’m not going to,” he pressed his face against Atsushi’s hair, sighing. “Atsushi, there’s. There’s something I have to do, okay? I won’t be gone long, I promise. Just stay here and I’ll be back soon.”
Atsushi’s hands don’t loosen their grip on his arms, but Dazai can’t bring himself to care.
Eventually, still shaking, they let go.
“Promise?”
Dazai smiles, then.
“Always.”
It was not a nice smile.
xxx——xxx——xxx
After convincing Atsushi that he isn’t leaving permanently, Dazai makes his way up the stairs- He’d considered, just for a moment, taking the hammer with him, but he doesn’t want to risk drawing Atsushi’s attention to it, again.
Best to leave it where it lay- Not like he wanted to touch it, again.
Unfortunately, this did mean he had to think of a new way to get rid of the Headmaster- Finding another hammer would take too long, after all, and now that he thought about it, there was too much risk that it’d make noise.
A knife, then? He knew the way to the kitchens, and while it might be messy, he doesn’t think you can mess up slitting someone’s throat.
Even if you are eleven and horribly malnourished.
Luckily for Dazai, the kitchen happens to be close by- Really, it’s just a matter of avoiding the floorboards that creak and being very, very quiet when he opens the drawers to look for the right thing.
Definitely not a butter knife, he thinks to himself. A cleaver is too big, though- Could i use it efficiently? And a steak knife might be too small…
His eyes fall on one of the larger knives in the set. A kitchen knife, was it? Seems light enough… Seems large enough, too. He picks it up for a moment, testing the weight, swinging it once or twice- Atsushi mentioned characters in his books doing that once, he thinks, and it’s something to do, if nothing else- And he thinks on what he’s about to do.
If this works- If Dazai really walks out of this room, knife in hand- A man will be dead by daybreak.
His hands will be bloody. It isn’t a decision he can take back, once he makes it.
Is he really going to do this? Can he do it? Does he want to-
(He thinks of Atsushi, curled up and shaking in the center of a room, tiny foot nailed to the ground-
He thinks of a piercing, painful hunger, of seeing Atsushi’s arms bloodied from how hungry the boy was-
He thinks of cold, of midnights full of pain, spent curled up in the corner of his shared room with Atsushi, thin arms wrapped around each other, murmured stories spilling from the silver haired boy’s lips-
He thinks-
“Osamu-san, wouldn’t it be nice if that was us?”
“It would be. Maybe it could be, one day.”
He thinks-
“Promise?”
“Always.”
He thinks, he thinks, he thinks-)
xxx——xxx——xxx
Dazai stares up at a wooden door- The stuff of nightmares, for kids like him, for kids like Atsushi. The home of their monster under the bed.
He opens the door, careful to keep it quiet.
Nothing moves in the darkness. He steps inside, closing it with a quiet click.
He wants to do this. He has to do this. They’ll both die here if he doesn’t.
He won’t regret it.
He can’t.
xxx——xxx——xxx
It’s warm, is Dazai’s first thought.
He stares at the body on the bed, blood slowly but surely seeping into the fabric of the sheets- Probably staining it, too, now that he thinks about it.
Good, he thinks, spiteful. That Man didn’t deserve clean place to die. Really, he deserved worse than a simple stabbing, too, but Dazai was short on time, and it was dark, and if the Headmaster has woken up and alerted someone-
He shakes the thought off, the action reminding him of the blood caking on his clothes and his skin. He made a face at the feeling.
And now it’s sticky. How fun.
Unfortunately, he and Atsushi need to leave- After all, he has no doubt that the other orphanage workers would claim it was Atsushi or himself who had done it, and he sees no reason to believe that whoever came to investigate would doubt them.
(He’d considered, briefly, killing the other workers to give them more time- They were just as much monsters as That Man was, after all… But no. Leaving was more important.)
He hopes Atsushi hasn’t been too upset while he was gone.
xxx——xxx——xxx
Getting back to Atsushi turns out to be the easy part- He opens the door with ease, still making as little noise as possible, but steps down the stairs leading to the basement loudly enough to alert Atsushi that someone is coming.
It’s getting out that’s the problem.
Because as it turns out, stepping foot out of the only place you’ve ever known, no matter how awful it was to you, is terrifying for both of them.
Dazai stares up at the gates before them.
Of course this is where he freezes. In front of gates. Not even when he’s killing someone. Of fucking course-
Atsushi’s hand tightens around his own, and he realizes, belatedly, that they’ve been clinging to each other since he got Atsushi out of the basement.
He tightens his own hand in response.
“Dazai-san,” the silver haired boy stops, face hesitant and voice hoarse. “Dazai-san, we… Need to go. Right? You’ll get in trouble for- For helping me if we don’t.”
Atsushi looks up at him, eyes still somewhat distant, but.
But it was better than it was.
Remember why you’re doing this.
It isn’t as if Atsushi doesn’t understand the situation- His friend is hardly stupid, and he knows what the blood that covered him means- So instead of arguing, he begins scaling the gates.
Opening them would make too much noise, right now.
Dazai refuses to ruin this. Not when they’ve come this far.
xxx——xxx——xxx
It had taken them a day to get out of the woods that surrounded the living hell that had been their life (they could’ve been quicker, but better safe than sorry- Atsushi is certain he heard people looking for them, after all).
It had taken them a further week of living on the streets, terrified of being found and dragged back, kicking and screaming, to find any hope of salvation.
(“I don’t want to go back, Osamu-san,” Atsushi had sobbed on their second night. “I don’t want to go back, they’ll take you, they’ll hurt you-“
“It’s okay, Atsushi. It’s okay-“
“Don’t go,” Atsushi choked out, shaking. “Don’t go, don’t go, you promised-“
“I did,” he pressed a kiss against Atsushi’s hair, eyes blank. “I won’t leave. I promise. I promise, I promise, I promise-“
The words had continued well into the night,)
Then again, maybe he shouldn’t be calling it salvation.
It’s warm.
Dazai stares at the man across from them, eyes dull. Atsushi is buried in his side, half trying to avoid looking at the bloody corpse on the medical table, half unable to look away.
He doesn’t think they’ve been apart for more than a minute since their escape.
Ōgai Mori turns his gaze to them, eyes wide, and there’s a touch of something unhinged there- But Dazai tightens his grip on Atsushi’s hand and remains in place.
They have nowhere else to go, after all.
“Both of you,” the black hair man starts, “are my witnesses… And the only other ones here to witness the last words of the former boss of the Port Mafia. He died of illness, and passed on leadership to his doctor with his dying breath.”
Mori’s grin stretches wider.
“Isn’t that right, Dazai Osamu-kun and Nakajima Atsushi-kun?”
And Dazai thinks of meeting the man, and his words at the time.
(“Twenty-three stab wounds,” he’d murmured, “is not an insignificant crime.”
Dazai knew a threat when he heard one, and the man smirked at his unasked question.
“Join with the Port Mafia, and I can promise protection from the consequences of your actions. You’ll be well suited, I’m certain.”
Dazai… Considers. Slides his gaze down to Atsushi, tucked into his side, eyes wide and the tell tale purple-on-gold of his ability peering at the one who’d invaded their temporary hideaway of an abandoned building.
(And hadn’t that been an event in and of itself- Discovering abilities, discovering that they had them-)
Mori’s smirk stretches wider, and Dazai thinks, absentmindedly, that only monsters how that many teeth.
“And your little friend can even join, too.”)
Dazai is sure that, if not for No Longer Human, it would be claws digging into his side instead of Atsushi’s tight grip.
Neither of them move, though, and all Dazai can do is stare at the man in front of them.
If it was just him, he wouldn’t care. If it was just him, he could deal with it. But it isn’t just him.
(Dazai thinks of bloodied nails and hammer and an aching, desperate need-)
They have nowhere else to go.
Against his side, Atsushi gives a tiny nod.
“Yes, Mori-san.”

Dazai Osamu is twelve years old when he commits his first crime in a fit of desperation.
It won’t be the last.

Author’s Note: Nyanon here again- And here’s what I’ve been working on! Hopefully this lives up to my last little… Drabble? One-shot? Though it’s definitely more violent than the last one… Uh, whoops?
Also, super sorry if this wasn’t word for word on anything that popped up in universe? For example, I couldn’t completely remember Mori’s little speech to Dazai… Hope that’s alright!

Lay Down Your Shield
a one-shot character study of murasakibara focusing on his relationship with basketball and his friendship with kuroko
AN: thank you to 1Attaetion on Ao3

this takes places in the same 'verse as "Exception," but since it takes place before "Exception" and is canon-compliant, you don't have to read that
any constructive criticism or feedback would be lovely!
AN: any dialogue in italics isn't originally mine and is from the crunchyroll subtitles of knb text in italics and bold means a text message
Winter Cup, January, the Generation of Miracle’s First Year of High School
Murasakibara couldn’t help the frown that crawled onto his face when Kiyoshi approached him with his stupid smile on his face. He looked away from him, glaring at the air as Kiyoshi said, “Let’s play again sometime!”
Angered by his words for some reason he could put a finger on, he directed his glare back at Kiyoshi instead. “What? No way,” he growled, undoing his hair from the ponytail he’d tied it in. “I’m quitting basketball.” He turned his glare away from Kiyoshi’s face as it fell, ignoring the pang of guilt in his chest when he thought of leaving Himuro behind. “I played until the end because Muro-chin was so desperate, but it wasn’t fun.” His tongue felt awkward in his mouth for some reason. He could feel Kuroko’s gaze on him from the other end of the court, but he ignored it. “It’s already a boring enough sport. There’s no reason to keep playing after I’ve lost.”
He turned away, heading for his bench, when Kiyoshi spoke up. He paused--not because he wanted to hear what Kiyoshi had to say! Mostly because he was pretty sure that Kiyoshi would follow him around to make him hear it. He was a persistent idiot. “I see. I guess it can’t be helped, then." He paused, but Murasakibara could feel that he wanted to say more. “If that’s how you really feel.” Murasakibara could hear the stupid smile in his voice, so he just walked away from Kiyoshi before Kiyoshi’s awful attitude made him do something stupid.
When he reached the bench, he grabbed his towel, throwing it over his head to hide his face. He could feel his eyes burn slightly, but he wasn’t sure why. Huh. Weird.
Himuro came over to him, still full of determination in that way Murasakibara could never understand. Himuro was never going to be talented like Murasakibara--or even Kagami. Why did he try so hard? “We’ll win next time, Atsushi!” He proclaimed proudly. He was sad, but his voice didn’t have the bitterness that Murasakibara could feel growing in his own chest.
“What?” Murasakibara couldn’t keep the anger out of his voice. “I told you, I’m quitting!”
“You sure?” Himuro asked, and Murasakibara hated him, just a little, for how gentle his voice sounded. “It doesn’t seem that way to me.”
Tears fell on his hand where he was trying to zip up his bag, and he realized, with a start, that he was crying. Huh? When did that--
Oh. The burning in his eyes. He screwed up his face, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to rip their way out of his chest.
Okamura’s hand landed on his head. “You’re just getting started. Keep at it!” he told Murasakibara, and Murasakibara wasn’t sure if that was a threat or a promise. He knocked Okamura’s hand off his head, shoving it away with a waving arm.
“You did well, guys.” He heard Coach Araki say to the team. “Let’s go home.”
“Yes ma’am!” The team replied in unison, Murasakibara excluded. When the team respectfully ignored the tears that continued to fall down his face as they headed for the locker room to get changed and when someone shared some sweet snacks with everyone in the locker room--well, he thought that they might not be such a bad group after all.
Even if they were stingy. One snack wasn’t nearly enough for him!
~
Kuroko couldn’t help the feeling of ecstasy that rolled through him every time he thought back to the match earlier that day. They’d won! Against Murasakibara! Against Yosen, the Shield of Aegis! They’d made it to the semi-finals! He honestly couldn’t believe it. It felt more like a dream than reality . . .
But as he watched Kaijo play against Fukuda Sougou, it became more and more real to him. Kise was down there, battling against Haizaki for the sake of Kise’s team. For the chance to face Seirin. It was enough to make him want to cry, though he refused to actually do so.
However, the more time that passed, the more he itched with the need to find Murasakibara. He’d never expected that Murasakibara could go into the Zone, and so it had completely blind-sided him when it happened. But it was a shred of proof, finally, that Murasakibara loved basketball!
Kuroko wanted to tell him--
Well, he didn’t know what he wanted to say. But he could figure it out on the way . . . hopefully, it would be some time before the words actually came out of his mouth. It would be quite embarrassing if he tried to speak but no words came out.
~
Kuroko was apprehensive of the outcome of Shuutoku and Rakuzan’s match. Shuutoku and Seirin had tied in their last official game. The two teams were relatively well-matched and had played many practice matches together over the summer. And to be honest, he knew Shuutoku on a personal level better than he knew almost any other team.
But he had no idea how Shuutoku (and, by extension, Seirin) would match up to Akashi and Rakuzan.
He was as hopeful as he was nervous.
When he started to head down to his seats with the rest of his team, he spotted Murasakibara and Himuro arriving out of the corner of his eye. He frowned, confused, wondering how Himuro could have possibly convinced Murasakibara to willingly come to watch the match, but quickly realized that he’d probably been bribed with junk food.
Kuroko grimaced at the thought of all the junk food Murasakibara constantly ate. Sure, Kuroko liked the occasional (dozen) vanilla shakes, but Murasakibara was just too excessive for him.
Impulsively, he decided to approach them.
When he was finally close enough, he reached up and tapped on Murasakibara’s shoulder, causing the other boy to jolt in shock. He looked around wildly for a moment before looking down and meeting Kuroko’s eyes. Murasakibara’s eyes narrowed. “Kuro-chin,” he said in acknowledgement.
“Hello Murasakibara-kun, Himuro-san.” He gave them both polite nods as Himuro jumped and then blinked at him in surprise.
Himuro smiled at him politely and warmly enough. Though Kuroko could see his slight bitterness (though it was well-hidden, he might add) towards one of the players that had defeated his team yesterday in his eyes. “Ah, hello! Have you come to talk to Atsushi?” When Kuroko nodded, Himuro responded quickly, cutting off the complaint Murasakibara had been about to voice. “The match won’t start for another few minutes. I’m sure you guys will be done by then, yes?” Himuro turned his smile on Murasakibara.
After a few seconds of wavering, Murasakibara crumbled. As he reluctantly followed Kuroko back towards the hallways and away from the overwhelming noise of the crowd around them, Kuroko couldn’t help but feel an amused smile slip over his lips. Himuro was a sneaky one. And probably a good influence on Murasakibara.
When he turned around, Murasakibara was eyeballing him with reluctance (and a bit of thinly-veiled hostility). “Whaddaya want, Kuro-chin?”
As Kuroko stood there, he realized that he didn’t know what he wanted from Murasakibara. And that as much as he disapproved of Muraskaibara’s attitude, he couldn’t help but feel so proud of the fact that he’d gone into the Zone. That he’d found a friend like Himuro.
But he couldn’t say any of that. Murasakibara would just walk away from such “sentimental garbage.” And so when he opened his mouth, he honestly wasn’t sure what would come out. Which was why he was as surprised as Murasakibara when what did come out was: “Himuro-san and Kagami-kun.”
Murasakibara stared at him like he didn’t know why Kuroko was saying something like this before grunting. “What about them?”
“I told Kagami-kun that he and Himuro-san could be rivals and brothers. That he should stop being an idiot.” Kuroko was surprised by the amused snort from Muraskaibara.
“Sounds like you,” he grumbled, and Kuroko decided to take that as a compliment.
“It’s something that I realized when I was playing Midorima-kun in the Tokyo Championship League. Aomine-kun and Kise-kun reminded me of it recently. That we were friends and rivals. Midorima-kun even gave Kagami-kun advice that helped him play better this summer. Without that advice, he likely would have won against us the second time. But he doesn’t seem to regret it at all. And after yesterday. . . Kise-kun will be my next opponent today. And yet, I rooted for him all throughout that match. I was proud when he won. And--”
“Is this going somewhere?” Murasakibara drawled lazily, and Kuroko narrowed his eyes at him.
“And Aomine-kun helped me learn how to shoot in a way suited for me.” Kuroko paused for a second, thinking over all the words that had just come tumbling out of his mouth. They were truer than he had realized. “Maybe wanting to have it all makes me selfish, however, I can’t help bu--” Kuroko shook his head, stopping that train of thought. “I suppose what I’m trying to say is--” Kuroko dug around in his pocket. “Put your new cell phone number in my phone,” he demanded, sticking his phone out to Murasakibara.
Murasakibara glared down at Kuroko, and Kuroko felt so silly. He didn’t know what he was doing here, there was no way Murasakibara would--
“Yeah, okay, Kuro-chin,” he said, taking the phone and plugging his number into the ‘new contact’ option. Kuroko stood there, staring in shock at nothing but air all the while. When Murasakibara plopped the phone back in his still-outstretched hand a minute later, he blinked, returning to reality. He looked up and met Murasakibara’s gaze just in time for his large hand to land on his head. Kuroko scowled at the hand patting his head, before watching, still in disbelief, as Murasakibara strode away back to Himuro.
“Good luck, Kuro-chin,” he called. “You’re going to need it,” he muttered.
~
The fact that Akashi was terrifying wasn’t new information.
Murasakibara had experienced that terror first-hand during their one-on-one in third year of middle school.
But the fact that he had won the match against Shuutoku by so much even after Midorima had improved immensely? That had made even Murasakibara shiver a little in his seat when he had seen the final score.
And now, watching him play against Kuroko and the rest of Seirin, Murasakibara wasn’t sure how to feel. He respected Akashi more than almost anyone he knew, and he couldn’t help but feel bitter towards Seirin, the team that had defeated him and his team. So why . . .
Why did he feel the urge to stand up and cheer Kuroko on too when the rest of their middle school teammates had chosen to scream their support?
Loyalty and laziness kept him trapped in his seat, but as the end of the match approached, he couldn’t stop himself from leaning forward in his seat, tracking the action occurring in the game below him with intent eyes. He felt his palms and his feet itch--like he wanted to move--and scowled, flopping back in his seat to be contrary.
Despite the fact that all of his team had come to watch the match, he was pretty sure only Himuro had noticed the way that (even if it was only for a few moments) he had felt the urge, the want, to play basketball too.
When the cards fell and all was said and done, Seirin stood victorious. Murasakibara felt a strange tinge of unwanted pride. He had lost to the victors of this tournament, and no one less.
As he watched Kuroko’s team tackle him in hugs, the tiny figures dancing across the big, empty court, he felt that itch to play again. And when he watched Akashi shake Kuroko’s hand (his other self was clearly there to stay), he felt a warmth in his chest that almost overwhelmed that itch.
So he scowled and ignored both feelings, reaching into his bag for another snack to eat. Wanting to play basketball and loving basketball the way that Kuroko did was stupid.
~
Later that night, as he lay awake and stared at the ceiling above him, Murasakibara couldn’t stop thinking. He couldn’t stop thinking about the way that all of his teammates, even Akashi, had been changed by their matches against Kuroko and his team. He couldn’t help but wonder what was wrong with them!
(What was wrong with him, for not changing too.)
And he couldn’t stop thinking about what it was like to go into the Zone.
The way his focus had narrowed to him, tha players, the ball, and the court--as if nothing else mattered, as if the rest of the world had been drowned out . . . the way he felt like he’d been sinking down beneath the waves of the Zone had been . . . wonderful.
It had been wonderful for every moment that it had happened. It felt like the moment of euphoria that came when he took his first bite of something delicious, a feeling all the following bites could never capture as well as the first. And yet this version of that euphoria had been constant .
It felt like coming home.
And he hated himself for feeling that in the bone-deep way he felt it.
He knew that the other Miracles said you said to love basketball to go into the Zone--but that wasn’t true! It couldn’t be true . . . because he hated basketball.
He was quitting basketball!
He would just as soon as the season was over. After all, he didn’t want to let Himuro down.
But there was always a reason to keep playing, wasn’t there? At first he was just playing to join a club, any club! And then it was because he didn’t want to lose. Then it was because he was good at it. Because he didn’t want to let Akashi down. Because he didn’t want to fall behind all the rest of his teammates. Because he wanted to prove himself to be the best of them all, to beat Kuroko, to not let Himuro down--
There was always something.
But when this year was over . . . there was nothing.
There was no reason for him to keep playing, no reason for him to experience the Zone again.
He didn’t want to experience the Zone again--!
And yet he also did.
He wanted to play with Himuro next year.
He wanted to play against Kuroko, Akashi, and all his middle school teammates.
He wanted to go into the Zone again.
And he didn’t know why.
Groaning, Murasakibara threw an arm over his eyes, closing them and trying to block out the world. He heard his phone buzz. He threw out his other arm, groping around to find his phone. Squinting at the bright screen, he realized it was a text--
A text from Kuroko.
Did you come to the match today Murasakibara-kun?
Debating with himself for a few moments, Murasakibara shook his head at himself when he realized he wanted to reply.
yeah. congrats or whatever
He waited, tensely, for a reply.
Thank you. I was very proud of my team.
Murasakibara rolled his eyes at the response. “Typical Kuro-chin,” he grumbled to himself. But before he could tell Kuroko to leave him alone if that’s all he wanted to say, Kuroko sent another text.
Did you see that they were selling limited-edition sweets there today? I got some for you because I was not certain if you were there.
Murasakibara’s eyes gleamed. This. This was the reason he was friends with Kuroko.
And without realizing that he had started to think of Kuroko as a friend once more, he rapidly texted back, forgetting any reluctance and annoyance he’d previously had in a single moment.
Deep thoughts about annoying things could be saved for another time. Limited-edition sweets were far more important.

Kuroko's Birthday, January 31st, First Year of High School
Kuroko was thankful that Akashi had arranged a practice match between Rakuzan and Yosen in Tokyo yesterday, otherwise he doubted Murasakibara would have showed up at all. It was wonderful to see everyone again, but it was especially wonderful that they were all there for his birthday.
As they played match after match on the street court, he couldn’t help the small grin that he constantly wore on his face. He remembered playing in these various teams of three all the time in middle school, memories that were quite fond in the early days. While they had become tainted with the awful things that happened later on, it now felt like all the pain, anger, and guilt had been excised from those memories.
Kuroko was sure that the others had those memories too, but now all that was left was the enjoyment of the game that they all shared.
He could even see a smile on Murasakibara’s face as they played. Despite the complaints he muttered about them all being fanatics and the way he was constantly saying that he was exhausted from the practice matches between Rakuzan and Yosen the day before, he still kept playing until the rest of them decided to stop too.
After they took a group photo and Kuroko invited them all to the party that Kagami was hosting for his birthday, they all walked towards Kagami’s apartment. Momoi (he wasn’t sure he wanted to know why she knew everyone’s addresses) was leading the way with Akashi while Midorima, Kise, and Aomine argued. But Murasakibara was being quiet enough that he wasn’t dragged into their arguing (for once).
Kuroko fell back to walk next to him.
“Did you have a good day, Murasakibara-kun?”
Murasakibara jumped slightly, before giving him a bored look. “Ehh. It was annoying, but fine, I guess.”
Kuroko smiled, because (for Murasakibara) that was basically admitting that he’d had fun. “Are you excited to--”
“Don’t think that just because I went into the Zone you know how I feel,” Murasakibara snapped, cutting him off and clearly misunderstanding what his question had been about. Kuroko had been planning to ask if he was excited to eat, but well, they might as well have this conversation.
“I don’t know how you feel,” Kuroko agreed easily enough. And Murasakibara was surprised enough by this acknowledgement that he fell silent beside him. “I don’t know what the Zone is like, and I doubt I will ever know, no matter how much I love basketball. So I will only say to you what I have said many times before. And this time, I hope that you will actually hear me: Don’t squander the gifts you have been given. Please play your hardest, Murasakibara-kun.” Kuroko turned to look at Murasakibara as he walked, before nodding and speeding up to leave Murasakibara behind.
He had so much more he wanted to say. But somehow, he didn’t think Murasakibara was quite ready to talk about any of this. That’s why he was so surprised when Murasakibara said, quietly, “I’m not gonna quit my team.”
Kuroko’s pace stuttered with surprise, unsure if maybe he should slow back down to talk more or simply walk in silence. Or if Murasakibara would take that as Kuroko returning to say that he’d been right all along. So instead, he just murmured, “I’m glad,” and poked Aomine in the back to startle him.
He was easily swept up in his other friends’ conversation, but he kept an eye on Murasakibara all evening long. He tried not to be pleased about the fact that he was pretty sure that playing with them today had been a big part of Muraskibara’s reason for deciding to keep playing. But he failed, miserably.
Especially given the fact that he was watching all his friends celebrate his birthday with him, both on the court and off. In truth, he couldn’t stop smiling all day.

Vorpal Sword vs Jabberwock , Post-Interhigh, Second Year of High School
Getting benched with a hurt wrist in the middle of the game against Team Jabberwock sucked.
Because being able to play his hardest with a team that could keep up with him? Honestly, it was one of the best feelings Murasakibara had ever felt. And even if he had refused to admit it to anyone else aloud, he had finally become comfortable with the fact that he liked basketball at least a little after he had decided to keep playing basketball.
But even though he was missing out on playing, the feeling that came when their team won the game was . . .
Indescribable.
It made him want to play a thousand more games with the Miracles and Yosen and all of his friends.
~
It was one thing to hear that Kagami was leaving. It was another for Kagami to actually leave. Sitting outside the airport on a bench with his middle school teammates surrounding him, he watched the planes take off and rise through the sky, above the clouds. He knew that Kagami was in one of those planes . . . and he actually felt somewhat sad about it.
“Huh, he’s really gone,” Kise realized with a downcast look on his face.
“Now we’ll never play with him again,” Murasakibara frowned, pausing in rummaging around in his bag of chips. “Not that I care,” he added.
“That’s not true,” Midorima asserted, turning to look at him.
“Huh?” Muraskibara asked.
Aomine, glaring angrily at the road, grumbled. “I’m going to America.”
“What?” Kise asked. “To see Kagamicchi?”
“Of course not, idiot! I’m obviously going to play in the NBA.” Aomine declared loudly.
Kise jumped, turning to stare at him with surprise. “What? When?”
“I don’t know yet,” Aomine dismissed him, as if blustering could cover up the fact that he definitely didn’t actually have any concrete plans, “but I’m definitely going soon.”
Murasakibara decided to ignore them. They were both idiots anyway. At least Midorima was a little less stupid (and a lot more mean). “Mido-chin, what are you talking about?”
Midorima’s gaze had returned to the sky and planes above them. “I could ask you the same thing.  A slight smile curved over his face. “Aren’t we going to keep playing basketball?”
He looked back at the rest of them, but Murasakibara didn’t want to say “yes,” even if it was true.
“Midorima’s right,” Akashi spoke up, his hands elegantly folded together in his lap. “Kagami’s just playing somewhere else now.” He turned his whole face up to the heavens. “As long as we keep playing basketball, we’ll fight him again.”
See you again soon, Kagami, Murasakibara thought, strengthening his resolve and pushing any sadness he might have felt away. He reached for a handful of chips and turned his gaze at the planes overhead like the rest of his friends had.
When they met up with Seirin at the front of the airport to take the bus back together, it felt like it was on purpose that Kuroko chose to sit down in the seat next to him.
Aomine and Kise battled for Kuroko’s attention as much as they did anything else. Midorima’s scoldings just added more noise to the mess. Murasakibara decided that ignoring Midorima was his best bet to avoid being scolded by Akashi--a terrifying prospect. In truth, only Akashi’s iron-clad control over the worst of all of their behavior stopped them from being kicked-off the bus all together. Seirin was surprisingly noisy too, but Murasakibara supposed that made sense. Kuroko wouldn’t know what to do with a peaceful, calm team.
He and Kuroko sat together for most of the ride, not often interacting with each other given all the chaos that was around them. When they finally got close to their stop, he offered some of his sugary snacks to Kuroko. Kuroko took a vanilla wafer with a small smile.
Staring directly at the seat in front of him as he spoke, Murasakibara finally said. “I like playing basketball.”
It was something he wasn’t sure he’d admit to anyone else in the world besides Kuroko--except probably Himuro and maybe Akashi.
Kuroko simply said: “I know.”
He scowled. “Ugh, you’re so self-righteous, Kuro-chin. I still don’t think that liking basketball makes me, or anyone else, a better player or anything!”
“I know.” Kuroko didn’t push the point, like Murasakibara had feared he would.
So he heaved a sigh and changed the subject. “I wish you’d just shut up sometimes.”
“I know,” Kuroko said, but he was smiling.
Murasakibara couldn’t stop the smile that was growing on his own face, thankful that Kuroko wasn’t making a big deal out of this. He was simply letting this moment happen between just them, without the scrutiny of their ex-teammates or Kuroko’s current teammates.
This time, when he felt that warmth in his chest he associated with friendship, that itch in his soul to play, he chose to smile instead of frown.
For once, he chose to lay down his shield, his walls, and let those feelings in.
He wanted to play. He loved to play. And he wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, he may have to say goodbye to friends over the years, but one thing he wanted to hold on tight to was basketball. As long as he kept playing, he would see friends he’d thought were long gone, friends like Kuroko, again.
And that was why he would never stop playing basketball.

Oh, I didn’t realize you watched Bungou Stray Dogs! I just finished it the other day. Sorry if you answered this before, but why don’t you like Dazai? Also do you ship anything? I personally like Dazai/Atsushi and Atsushi/Akutagawa, but just curious about yours because I really like your take on ship dynamics.
Akuatsu, Akuatsu, AKUATSU 100%! I mean, I’m okay with Soukoku, I really shiped them after s2, but now I just don’t care because I honestly don’t see any progress or caring there (I thought they were the perfect combination, but actually their powers are the perfect combination, not them lol). As I said before I personally think that Dazai was the most human/warm with Oda and I seriously don’t get why he picked that dude as an object of his affections, but whatever. If he doesn’t need us we don’t need him lol
Why do I love akuatsu? They went from mortal enemies to risking their lives for each other; rashomon loving atsushi is the sweetest thing ever (and when you think that it’s really a part of akutagawa it’s even cuter); they gave each other an out from their painful pasts absolutely accidentally (isn’t that a soulmates thing?); they’re literally the ying and yang (I really love how even their clothes represents it and all the dark within the light and light within the dark thing); their bickering officially became “a married couple” kind; I think the “lawnmower” is the cutest nickname; but I seriously love their relationship progression, and they’ve made each other so much better (Atsushi got much more character when he’s with Akutagawa, while Akutagawa learns all these new emotions with Atsushi and now look what a cinnamon roll he became in s3, I cried). I love so so much about them.
As for Dazai, well.. he is one of those anime characters type, who enjoys manipulating people and thinks of them as his marionettes. And I never really found this attractive. Sometimes they give those types some backstory, like how they got this way... to at least like make ppl.. understand them more? And I personally don’t think there can be any justification for behaving like this with ppl who cares about you, but at least it’s something.
But as I mentioned before, the bad thing about BSD is that is has too many characters, but no one even cares to write them. Akutagawa is literally the only one who has a great character progression and walks the right direction, others are just complete fucking mess: Atsushi at least given a full backstory but he’s walking circles every season from accepting his ability to suddenly again not accepting it; we did have a glimpse of Chuuya’s past, but then he’s suddenly dumb as fuck for the rest of the season, which I didn’t think was the case in s2; others are just dark forest seriously with “very very dark pasts” that no one knows about. And I can’t quite care for someone I don’t know anything about.
Also I’m just so fucking in love with characters who stay great human beings even with a horrifying pasts. Because I find those super incredible. Like Levi and Kanda had fucking awful pasts, but man, they’re such good human beings, even though they pretend like they hate everyone which they’re very bad at xD they’re just such kittens.
I guess it just depends on how much inner strength you got. Bc Wei Wuxian could never become like Meng Yao and do things like using good ppl for his gain, even though society also treated him like absolute garbage. He could’ve become an asshole after everything he’s been through and how much he’s lost, but he was strong enough to stay the most amazing human on earth.
I have lots of other examples. But I understand that it’d be weird if every character had a character to stay that way. And sadly it what mostly happens to ppl under such circumstances. And would BSD be some well written dramatic realism I’d watch it differently, but it’s not that deep you know.
So either way I can’t like Dazai. Because there are ppl who are trying to be good there and he disses them. I don’t really think that they could’ve shown me anything that would justify such behavior, but I mean if they at least showed something I guess I’d at least pity him and let it go. Is he genius? Yes. Is he a good human being? No.
I guess maybe I was just spoiled with so many great characters, but I don’t find him no interesting, no relatable, no charismatic or worth sticking around for, he’s also very selfish and the way he treats Akutagawa and Chuuya makes me very mad (and no, enjoying watching Chuuya destroying his brain is not funny for me). But at least he’s a hardcore Akuatsu fan, so we can agree with him on something haha.
p.s. I actually thought I’ve posted a lot about akuatsu, but maybe not, I need to fix it :D

Whumptober #20: Wake up! - Bungou Stray Dogs
This title is a bit of a stretch, but I needed a chapter like this at this point in the story. This is a multi-chaptered story, read part 1 here and part 2 here. ***
So this is how it is. After years trying to make things right, this is how I'm going to spend the last of my days. It almost makes one want to keep on living... and how fucked up isn't that?
After trying to kill myself my entire life, here I am, at the brink of death, fighting to stay alive.
If karma was on my side, I might be as bold as to think I deserved another chance, but… Anyone else perhaps. I deserve what I'm getting, and if it's under false pretenses or not, it really doesn't matter.
On the one hand, all I want to do is die and be done with it. Kick the bucket one final time, releasing the Agency of their duties of looking for me. Because I know they're looking. The idiots won't leave this alone before they know exactly what happened.
Then, on the other hand, I want to show these fuckers exactly who I am. No matter how hard I've fought to walk in the light, I'm still Osamu Dazai. The youngest executive in Port Mafia history, the second half of the infamous double black. The monster, the legend.
...reduced to less than the shadow I once cast.
I can't believe I ever thought that things couldn't get any worse.
Just when you think you've lost everything... You'll find out that you can always lose a little more. ***
"Hinata-chan, it's nice to meet you again. I only wish it was under different circumstances," Kunikida greeted solemnly and directed the short brunette to sit on the same couch she had been seated at six months ago together with her mother.
"Kunikida-san, I'm so happy you have reconsidered taking our case further. There's just no way Niko-chan would have drowned like that- she knew better than to go swimming by herself."
Kunikida forced himself not to frown, recognizing that taking on this case was more selfish than not, but he had to act professionally.
"It was never about doubting your suspicions. It's just been very busy," he said. Technically, that wasn't a lie.
"Is Dazai-san here too? He was such excellent help when Niko-chan was missing, even if it turned out the way it did," the young lady asked, looking around the office landscape where several of the other agents immediately turned away and suddenly looked extremely engaged with whatever conveniently close to their positions in the room.
"Unfortunately, he is not," Kunikida answered carefully. "I'm going to be completely honest with you, Hinata-chan. Dazai-san has been missing for six months."
He watched closely as the young woman's expression changed. She looked surprised.
"R-really?"
"Yes, sadly. He disappeared only days after your sister was found."
Hinata looked incredulously into the air in front of her, brows curved into a small scowl.
"And you think it might have a connection to my sister's death," she concluded finally.
Kunikida took a deep breath before he answered. He didn't want the girl to think that this was the only reason they took her case; even if it kinda was. It was hard to look at it in an unbiased way right now.
"Yes, we do," Kunikida settled on, quickly adding, "but that doesn't mean that we wouldn't have taken the case if it wasn't for that. If Dazai-san had been here, I can assure you that he would have been on it as soon he had seen it. That's the only reason we haven't been aware of your application until now. I'm going to be frank with you, most of our time since he went missing, has gone towards looking for him."
Hinata folded her hands in her lap, big bright cerulean eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
"I guess it's been a difficult six months for all of us, huh?" she muttered gravely. Kunikida couldn't do anything but agree.
"So, what do you think? Would you like to go through with this?"
"Yes, yes I would. Whatever you need. I want justice for my sister and Dazai-san's disappearance only amplifies my suspicion that everything is not as it seems."
"I believe you are right," Kunikida acknowledged with a short nod and paused for a moment to collect himself. He had read through Dazai's lack-lustered reports from the search, again being reminded of how infuriating it was that the ex-mafioso was so reluctant to put down the work and do it properly. In any other job, a person would have been sacked for something like that.
"I read in your application that your parents-understandably- have taken your sister's death very hard and don't want to go any further into it, but it would be of really big help if they could come in for a talk as well. All and any information would be greatly appreciated."
"Oh, uh, I… I can ask them. But I won't promise anything. My mother will probably try her best, but dad is… a bit more stubborn. I think he took her death the hardest of all of us. He has buried himself in his work ever since. He's hardly ever home anymore."
Kunikida reached out and gave her a compassionate clasp on the shoulder.
"I can only imagine. We will be very respectful. Is there one thing all of the members in our agency knows all too well, it's the pain of being the ones left behind."
A sad smile graced Hinata's thin lips as she gathered her things and left. Kunikida kept his seat in the small area where they would interview their clients for a little bit after she had gone. He felt conflicted about this. Unsure if anything they could learn about the poor girl's death would benefit the family in any way. In the end, it seemed like the only ones that could possibly gain anything at all from this was them.
...and Dazai. And they were definitely running out of time. The sly bastard was persevering, which he had shown time and time again. But six months was a hell of a long time, even considering that the idiot had nine lives and always seemed to land on his feet. He might twist an ankle in the landing but, somehow, it never seemed to slow him down.
"Yo, d'you know where Dazai's reports on the Saito-case has gone?" Ranpo suddenly startled him out of his musings with his question. Kunikida had to think for a moment, before he replied.
"I think Atsushi had it last. Ask him if he's done with it," he muttered absentmindedly. The short detective frowned a little but didn't say anything before he turned around, headed for the weretiger's desk.
After another couple of minutes, Kunikida was able to tear himself away from his spiraling thoughts towards doing something a little more productive.
He had studied the Yokohama map filled with large black X's and notes written in the margin for about half an hour when Ranpo approached him again.
"Uh, Kunikida-san? Did you read Dazai-san's research from this case?"
Kunikida scoffed. Of course, he had- several times. It was the usual chicken-scratches he always presented. Hardly legible, after being hand-written with poor grammar, going back and forth in time seemingly at random, with small add-ins with arrows pointing to where he had meant to put it and scratches where he had spelled a word wrong or changed his mind on how to articulate it.
"Obviously," he answered before he shrugged. "Well, as far as it was decipherable at all."
"Well actually… I think it was code."
For several seconds, Kunikida was unable to grasp what the brown-clad detective in front of him had just said. Because he had read that file so many times that he could quite literally recite it from memory, and not for a damn second had he spotted any sort of code in those crumbled up papers that looked more like they had been fished out from the bottom of a primary schooler's backpack at the end of a school year than as an official document.
"...what?"
"I crosschecked with some of his older reports and it's the same thing. It seems like he always keeps personal notes hidden in code through his reports."
"No, I mean… What the hell are you talking about? There's a code?"
"...which I've already deciphered of course. It's actually quite common. They make a code, mostly to themselves to keep track of their personal thoughts and surmises in their investigations. It's not too complicated, for the trained eye I mean, but they make sure to make it complex enough that they won't get in trouble with the higher-ups if they turn out to be wrong. To avoid being punished for having damning suspicions against their clients for example, or chasing leads that don't turn up anything. It's almost like pig-Latin, really, except it's personalized but there's a fixed pattern and-"
"How in the world haven't you seen that before?" Kunikida snapped, to which Ranpo looked fiercely offended.
"Now you just hold on a second! This is the first time I've laid eyes on that file and I recognized the pattern right away! The Saito-case was sad and all, but it was not a high-profiled case in any sense of the word. Nobody else that's read it recognized it!"
"Yeah, yeah, fine. I get it. I'm sorry. Would you please just tell me what it says?" Kunikida growled between clenched teeth.
"Well, there's nothing about a possible location yet, but," Ranpo took a deep breath and started laying out the pieces of paper in front of Kunikida. "...at least Dazai-san provided us with a name." ***
“Wake up,” a dark voice commanded from somewhere still far beyond consciousness. It repeated itself, several times, coaxing him back to the awful truth of his current existence. His body ached fiercely, foremost his head and throat and the newly broken arm which had not been properly set yet (he didn't know what he had expected; of course they would want him aware for that). The rest of his body hurt too, but it seemed to bleach to this new sensation that was conquering his being. There was dull nausea deep inside his gut too, that threatened to surface more and more at each second that went by.
"That's it. Can you look at me?" the masked man said, and Dazai faintly recognized him as the doctor who just would not let him die. "I have talked them into having you here for at least a couple of hours. You're not going to feel great after this. I'm going to keep you on this IV to avoid any dehydration. That sometimes happens after a… meal like this," the doctor said, looking between his patient and the bag of liquid on the rack a few centimeters above him.
"I also want to keep you on oxygen. When someone has starved themselves for as long as you have, there's always the risk of refeeding syndrome. I've been given strict instructions to not let you die, so that is what I'm going to do."
Dazai was sure he wouldn't have been able to care if he wanted to because as the doctor finished talking, he felt the bile rise in his throat. If it hadn't been for the bonds that still tied him firmly in place, he would have been able to turn on his side to avoid choking on his own vomit.
Luckily, Dr. You-shall-not-pass was quickly at work, loosening the restraints on his head and arms to give him enough reach to puke into the basin that was ready at his side.
Dazai emptied himself entirely, strangely comforted at the feeling. At least, it had calmed the nausea. Latex-gloved hands were steadying him for a moment, ready to lower him back into the bed.
Something inside Dazai's mind shifted in that instance. A tempting while slightly scary thought crossed his mind. Something that had not occurred yet up to this point in his captivity; an opportunity.
Before giving it much more thought, or perhaps unable to, Dazai reached for the basin with shaky hands and quickly whacked it over the doctor's head. He was maybe weak, injured and sick, but if you've killed as many people as Dazai had, you knew where to aim.
There was almost a small pang of guilt ignited in Dazai as the doctor folded in on himself and flopped onto the floor in a motionless heap. But, there was no time to dwell on it. Adrenaline had struck and that was literally the only hope he had of getting out of here without being rescued in the state he was in.
Quickly, he fumbled with the rest if his restraints and yanked the IV out of his hand, threw off his blanket and placed his feet on the floor and got up.
And imminently fell back down. His hip throbbed as if it was set ablaze, leaving him immobilized on the floor while heaving for air as the bile once again rose in his throat.
An alarm had started to signal in the distance and Dazai was faintly aware that he had screwed up the only chance he would get to escape. His vision had already started to blacken in the edges when several armed men entered the room, shouting and making too many loud noises to handle anymore. This time, Dazai considered himself lucky once the illuminating sticks closed in on him with the promise of blissful unawareness. He even made a point of resisting, just so they would make sure that he was thoroughly out before he would meet his inevitable punishment.

I combined these two asks because they were similar, and Kimishita’s was done in an earlier ask which I linked.  This is very long lol
Kiyose Haiji
Pinning him down can be difficult, and not just because he’s Chikusei-so’s mom and has to do all the cooking and coaching.  But he’s slippery, and unless he’s invested, he’s kind ephemeral.  Like he’s your friend, but the kind of distant one?
Once he gets to know you and you are considered part of his tribe, prepare to march to his tune lol he has your best interests at heart, so you should listen!
Sporadic with affection. Like you could go days without holding his hand or hug him, and then he’ll back you into a secluded corner and do terrible things to you.
It’s hard to tell from his expression that he cares about you, since he basically wears the same expression all the time, unless he’s being purposely terrifying.  When you are alone, he lets you behind the mask a little bit, will murmur his feelings into your ear, usually in moments of intimacy.
NSFW
His hands.  Miracles from god.  Can literally play you like an instrument easily and efficiently.  Can do it in public or in private, much to your eternal frustration and enjoyment.
He’s a dom, but like a gentle one.  Sex and intimacy are on his terms, but you are more than satisfied.  His aftercare game is legendary.  Is very soft and affectionate afterward.
Doesn’t really care how he takes you, and changes it up based on the moment.  Does like any position where he can see your whole body – thus, loves to watch you ride him slowly.
 Sugiyama “Shindo” Takeshi
You will have to structure your time around this boy, because he is SLAMMED all the time. Provide some stress relief, he needs it, no matter what he insists.
He’s very supportive of you, and will do anything to help you out.  This means adding more workload, so you’ll have to protect him. Not the type to push if you tell him you have it handled, but it’s important to him that you know he’s there
Dates with him are sweet, but usually have to be planned by you.  He’ll do his best to make time for whatever you want, but he might be late or have to cancel sometimes.
Will tell you all about running and the team and probably enlist your help with promoting and the like.
Coming to see his meets has him melting for you even more.  Surprisingly not shy about PDA and will give you a kiss in front of everyone.
NSFW
He’s the type to know what he wants and set about doing/getting it.  He’s very gentle the first time, but confident to make up for whatever awkwardness you feel.
Can spend a long time just kissing over your body, lingering along your neck, collarbone and chest. Bites and sucks at your nipples gently until you are whining and your fingers clench in his hair.
Sex is intimacy for him, so he actively fights to make time for you in this respect, harder than dates anyway.  When he wants to feel close to you he asks you if want to be with him.  Usually at your apartment because privacy at Chikusei-so is non-existent
Lots of cuddling once you are sweaty and spent.  Presses sleepy kisses to your face and head and tells you he loves you.
 Kizuki Jojirou
So enthusiastic about all things you.  Literally brightens like the sun the moment he sees you.
Has the bad habit of talking a mile a minute so you’ll have to either get good at deciphering or slow him down.
Blushes every time he holds your hand, but stubbornly does it anyway.  This does lessen over time.  But because he gets so blushy, he can’t really deal with PDA beyond hand holding. Sputters if you kiss his cheek.
Always makes time for you, even if he’s falling off his feet in exhaustion, he’ll take you out on a date. Loves the way you smile at him, and the way he feels when he’s with you.
His brother and teammates tease the shit out of him, but he thinks your worth any teasing.
NSFW
Physical intimacy is HUGE for him, so it probably takes a long time for your relationship to develop into it.
He’s so nervous he’s shaking the first time you have sex.  No matter how many times you tell him to relax, he’s still high strung.  Is afraid of getting anything wrong.
Because it’s difficult for him, he takes his time, touching you everywhere gently, with a sort of awe that is almost flustering.  His eyes are very big and shiny.
Asks you to teach him about your body and follows your guidance.  Take his hands and place them over your breasts.  Pays close attention as he squeezes and traces your nipples with his fingers and thumbs.  Thoroughly enjoys the act once he gets out of his own head.
Ooshiba Kiichi
Selfish boy that gets put out if you don’t order your life around him.  You’ll have to train him in manners.
Pouts if you can’t make one of his games, demands you make it up to him.  Usually settles with a few kisses.
Likes to lay with his head in your lap.  Likes this even better when  you comb your fingers through his fluffy hair.  He gets this sleepy look on his face, and he’ll listen to you talk about anything.  Basically the most docile he’s ever going to get.
His favorite date is one where you cook for him, but he will take you out to the usual places – amusement park, zoo, aquarium, etc.  Usually without many complaints either.
All the PDA.  Whenever he feels like. Zero shame.  Also, very cuddly.  He’s big, so he’ll wrap around you.  Also likes being cuddled by you
NSFW
High sex drive, especially once he starts practicing on a regular basis.  Just seeing you in your school skirt has him going a lot of them time.
Has fantasies about flipping up your skirt and fucking you in the club room against Kimishita’s locker. He’s kind of a dick that way.
Will listen if you say no, but will also pout.  Not above pulling you into his lap and grinding his erection against your ass no matter where you are.
It’s extremely obvious when he’s horny.  Like it’s written on his face.  He’s an idiot, and he doesn’t regulate these things.  Immune to teasing.
 Kimishita Atsushi
Answered here
 Usui Yuuta
Probably somehow manipulated you into a relationship.  Not in a bad way, just a you-don’t-see-it-coming-until-you’re-already-his kind of way
He’s a yan, so he’s possessive, and a little jealous.  This is especially true when it comes to Mizuki, who while stupid as a bag of rocks, is probably the most attractive one on the whole team.  A smidge of insecurity is in this.
Treats you properly though, and does sweet things, though usually when he has something to gain (ie you)
Not super into PDA, and more likely to drag you around a corner to kiss you senseless.  Doesn’t care if anyone sees, he just wants to horde your facial expressions all to himself.
NSFW
Knows every secluded spot on campus and will drag you to each one and finger you to orgasm just because he can.  It’s like a stress reliever for him, or a way of forgetting what he’s annoyed about.  Listening to your quiet keens and feeling you clutching him is a power trip he finds heady.
On the surface it doesn’t seem like he cares about control, but the reality is that he plays you like an instrument.  He knows exactly what to do to get the response he wants.  If you are topping, it’s because he wants it.
His favorite position is having you on your back, with your wrists locked in one of his hands and his body pressed completely against yours.  This way he can watch your face closely as he fucks you.  Usually slowly until you are squirming and whining beneath him.  Has infinite amount of patience.
 Kazama Jin
Not super into cuddling that doesn’t go anywhere.  He’s lazy as hell, but he has things to do lol
Pout at him though, and you’ll win.  Completely weak to your pouts
Will hold you, and if he has to, would rather face to face.  At least then he can have all the kisses he wants.  Absolutely exploits face to face cuddling.
His favorite cuddling though, is done on your lap where he can nap comfortably.  Lets you do whatever you want with his hair – braid it, comb it with your fingers, tie it in knots.  Doesn’t care what you do.  He just loves the feeling of you playing with his hair.
You could probably get him to agree to anything in this state.  He’s sleepy and pliant, but doesn’t always remember so you’d have to remind him of any promises made.
Not above cuddling in public.  Slumps over your back and pretends to fall asleep while his arms wrap around your middle.
Careful, he’s libel to cop a feel of your breasts in this position
NSFW
Cuddling when you are alone almost always turns into something more, even if it’s just making out and heavy petting.  He wants to feel you.
Sex is the one thing he puts all of his focus into and takes it even more seriously than soccer.  This really works out for you, because boy is great at making you come.  Spares no effort either.
Likes when you ride his face, likes 69 even better.
Can have a completely serious conversation while fingering you.  Like he could be on the phone with someone else while he watches his fingers slide in and out and he seems unaffected.  It’s embarrassing, but he gets a thrill out of it.

hi! if you're still accepting recs, might I suggest a chuuatsu coffeeshop au? if you're looking for tone, I'm thinking specifically about the cover of 'falling in love in a coffeeshop' done by daniela andrade, but feel free to do what you like. I hope you're feeling better ❤
Heya, sorry this was really late ‘orz I kept getting stuck. Anyway, I had a ton of fun with this, and I hope you do too! I didn’t lace in the lyrics like I did with my la vie en rose soukoku, but I hope you like it!
Falling in love in a coffee shop- Chuuatsu
Canon divergence- Atsushi manages to get a job at a shitty cafe after being kicked out of his orphanage.
——————
It was a cold misty morning, fog from outside beckoned to billow in through the windows, and there was no one to me found. The hiss was the only thing Atsushi heard on such mornings- the hiss of a coffee machine and the rustle of his apron against his clothes. Out of the general 20+ hours a day he spent here, these were the quiet ones. The ones that gave him small repose, even if that came with the dread that his already underpaid salary wasn’t helped by these hours of silence.
Atsushi was taught to count his blessings like tips- small, insignificant but he was to see them as only the greatest in the world- grovelling over generosity. When he was kicked out of the orphanage, that was someone slapping his already meagre pocket change- scattered to the floor and unable to pick up. He was lucky. He was lucky to find a job, even if it was underpaid, even if his boss yelled at him, even if… Mist gathered in his eyes. The coffee was ready. Bagged eyes picked followed the process, hopefully no one actually checked the cameras and he could eat and drink stock.
He sat behind the counter, drinking it slipped sip by slipped sip, no one was here anyway, and the worst that could happen is he’d be on the street again, right? I mean, it’s not like anyone would be here, let alone kill him over-
The slam open of the door startled Atsushi, spilling his forbidden coffee. A man was leaning against the counter, suit sliced with slight tatters. It wouldn’t be the strangest thing…? “Can I take your order?” “Short black. Do you…have a chair?” Something made Atsushi move against his robotic movements of a cog in a consumerist machi- this metaphor is too depressing.
The slight burn in his shirt didn’t register, as he went over the counter, settling the other man down in a slider. “Yes. There is.” It only registered how stupid the question and answer was after, as the admittedly short man glanced around. “Does anyone come here? Is this some shitty meeting place for gangs or something?” The words unsettled Atsushi like a white suburban mom with a bowl cut. “N-No?” Atsushi shook his head. “I’m here for the majority of the time, and it’s safe.”
The hiss of mist was heard again, but accompanied over the inaudible grumbles of the man before him. “Uh…what name is it under?” “Chuuya.” “Okay then…” Atsushi scrawled his name, setting the coffee next to him, and sitting opposite him.
“Amazing…” “O-Oh, is it that good?”“I haven’t drank it. This,” he pointed at the name, “The only time someone’s ever gotten two u’s, I’ve had some idiot have an 'o’ thrown in there.” “Really? I’ve never seen you around here…”“I’m around the other side of the city.” “I hear that’s so dangerous though…” Perhaps that explained the rips in his jacket…“I’m here searching for something.” A sip.“What?”“Good coffee.” “That’s all?”“No, I was just saying- a side note.” And Atsushi heard something strange- a laugh. The light sound reminded him of how long it’s been since he’s heard anything denoting happiness.
“Hey, is there anyone outside?” Atsushi glances out, “No, it’s like…4 in the morning, why?”“There’s a stain on your shirt.” Chuuya points out, getting out of the seat. “Oh jeez, there is!” A gratuitous flush of coloured embarrassment flit to his face, even for himself. “I’m so sorry!” A dismissal hand, “It’s fine, you probably have a few hours to wash it-” A sigh couldn’t help but escape Atsushi, more pocket change to give on already meagre scrapings. “Anyway…I have to get going, Atsushi.” Chuuya sets a five on the table, swiping the cup and giving a short smile, before leaving. Atsushi’s eyes widened, and for a fleeting moment, he felt a compulsion to talk more to Chuuya. “W-Wait!” He calls out, getting the other’s attention. “Yes…?”
“Uh…how did you know my name?” “You…” Chuuya was caught slightly off guard by the question, staring at Atsushi. He stifles his laughter, “It’s on your name tag, I can’t believe I forgot that.” Flushed face to flushed face, “I…can’t believe I forgot that too!” That intoxicating laugh again, as the two slowly parted.
*****
“So…what are you looking for? I’m surprised you came back again.” Atsushi was wiping down tables, it was later (earlier) at night, and the presence before him was perplexing.
“A tiger.” It wouldn’t exactly be best to tell him he’s a mafiosi, “For two unreasonable children, they want one that’s been going around town.” The Windex bottle clattered to the floor.
“You alright?” Chuuya steps over, picking it up and settling it on the table, setting a hand on Atsushi’s shoulder- perhaps to get ready to throw him to the floor (at least that would be his first reflex for doing such a thing, but that surprisingly didn’t come to mind). “O-Of course.” A stammering lie. So it was him…
“You didn’t wash your shirt from last time I came here, the stain’s still there.” Chuuya points out. “I…” Atsushi’s nerves only increased, before a sigh. “I don’t have the money to get it laundered yet- it’s quiet around this time of year.”
“Why do you work here?” “Why do you come here? If it’s so awful?”“I’ve…” The question stops Chuuya. “I’ve always had an acquired taste.” For old coffee shops with weretigers, is not exactly what he would have in mind. “I don’t have any other option.”“You do.” Chuuya sets his money on the counter, however, tipping Atsushi would only sully the meaning in his words.
*****
“I have a job for you.” Chuuya sets some papers down.“A coffee?”“Yes. Well no. Both.” The mafiosi sighs. “Look, I can’t stand coming by here all the time to see this beautiful perso-” “what was that” “to see you, practically living on brown sugar.”“It’s not that bad, I get white and macro-” “Atsushi.” A sideways glance. “Look, don’t worry, this cat’s in the ba- it’s in the bag. Practically 100% chance of getting it.” Atsushi looks over it, something about a detective agency? He slowly glances up, “You look worried.”“I’m not.” “Then what is it?”Chuuya grits his teeth, face colouring with frustration. “Look, just trust me alright? This wasn’t easy to do, he is a very mentally taxing person-” probably not the best impression. “For me, that is.”“So…what do I do?”“The same you always do- survive, maybe make some coffee, all that.”“And when do I see you?” Chuuya looks up at those eyes, a pang of loneliness gripping onto him, to drink in the sight of those eyes and the warmth of coffee that he might never see again. “I…don’t work for them myself, but…” He could be a little selfish, couldn’t he? “Can we meet up here, every so often? I mean, it’s an old place, but…” I want to be with you. “S-Sure. Thank you.” A prompt nod. “It…means a lot to me.”
*****
Chuuya fondly adjusts Atsushi’s tie. “Nervous?” “O-Of course!”“Don’t be stupid, I’m the one who should be nervous, I can’t let anyone from there see me!” A gentle punch on the shoulder. “Look, you’ll be fine. I promise you, that somehow, somewhere there’ll always be someone there for you.” A sigh, “I got some back home, but even you- you have no clue, but I was just about to be killed, and I crawled in there and you were there…” this is getting incomprehensible… “Just…you can make it, okay?”Atsushi stared at him, a deer in the headlights of…life. Chuuya stepped back, unaware of the close proximity, all too late to press those coffee-tinted lips against his own.“Okay that was a terrible, horrible speech but…how are you now?”A response was a granted wish, of those lips on his. Perhaps it was a rush of adrenaline, but their arms rushed for a tender hug, warm and enveloping like an espresso on the coldest of nights. “Better.” A wink, as Atsushi walked up those stairs. Chuuya could only help but be lovestricken.
*****
“You look a lot nicer in that suit, I have to say I have nice taste.” A gentle sip of coffee, again in that warm tone of a rustic (probably rusting) cafe. “Do you just wear the same thing every day though?”“I…like it.” Atsushi tightens the tie, glancing at Chuuya. “But thank you, again.”“It’s fine. I’m just glad you’re still alive.” Chuuya takes a sip, trying to dismiss his thoughts. “My last memory of you would be you kissing me before a job interview.” Well, he never was one to beat around the bush.“I-I mean, part of it was a bravery thing…”“Part of it?”“The other part…well…I wanted to do that for a while.” A sigh lost on a clear day. “You know, you have to count your blessings like pocket change.”“And you cashed in everything, all or nothing?”A shared laugh. “I guess you could say that.”Chuuya glanced around, before sitting next to Atsushi on the slider, the two sharing a warm kiss. Perhaps this was meant to be a fleeting moment like the high of coffee, maybe it could be something more, but one thing was for certain.“This coffee shop still sucks.”

[Akutagawa/Atsushi Fanfiction] Collide (5/?)
Title: Collide Pairings: Akutagawa/Atsushi, Akuatsu Author: Oniusagimaru Rating:  T Warnings: None Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters Summary: All it takes is one chance meeting and Atsushi’s life slowly becomes tangled up in Akutagawa Ryuunosuke’s. This has to be some kind of cosmic joke. A/N: In case anyone wants to know, the idol game in question is heavily based on THE iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls: Starlight Stage because I’ve been playing it the longest
The day after Akutagawa had bolted from his apartment, Atsushi tried to confront him about what happened since it was a…strange turn of events. Instead of being ignored, the other had gathered up his things and moved himself to the other side of the classroom. He sat in stunned silence for the remained of class. As soon as everyone was dismissed, Akutagawa made a beeline for the door and didn’t bother looking in Dazai’s direction when he was addressed.
His teacher quirked a curious brow in his direction, and Atsushi could only hold his hands up defensively. He couldn't tell Dazai a thing when he himself hadn’t wrap his head around the other's strange behavior. The same thing happened three more time, and it finally clicked that Akutagawa wasn’t being his usual rude self when the other fled in the opposite direction once their eyes met in the hallway.
Akutagawa Ryuunosuke, the biggest pain in the ass Atsushi has ever had the displeasure of meeting, was avoiding him.
Atsushi would’ve found the situation far funnier if it weren’t for the fact that he and Akutagawa needed to communicate. So, after having himself a good laugh, he went about trying to solve the problem. Since Akutagawa was avoiding him like the plague, Atsushi had to go to the next best source for information: Gin. The downside to relying on her was that Gin’s visits on campus were random, so an entire week went by before Atsushi managed to see her again.
He explained the situation to her, and as soon as he mentioned Akutagawa’s odd behavior following the chipper voice that emitted from his phone, Gin damn near doubled over in laughter. When she finally stopped, she confessed that her brother had been acting strange for some reason, but to hear that she believed Akutagawa was avoiding him due to embarrassment caused Atsushi to stare at her in shock. What was there to be embarrassed about? She said her brother might have accidentally opened an ‘idol game’ without headphones, and Instead of telling him more, Gin pulled out her phone. Atsushi watched as she turned her phone sideways while pressing on an app.
Though the voice was different, he was still greeted with the same phrase that had caused Akutagawa to flee his apartment. A girl dressed as a secretary welcomed them back as she presented a ‘log-in gift’ consisting of a rainbow-colored gem and what looked like an energy drink. With a bow she disappeared, the screen changing to a picture of another girl dressed in intricate, colorful clothing striking a dynamic pose, and Gin’s right thumb tapped the ‘LIVE’ option on the menu without hesitation. She chose a song from the long list that popped up, one he’d never heard of, and the screen went black before a countdown began to flash.
Little orbs began to descend quickly from the upper part of the screen, falling in time with the beat of the song the girls in the background sang and danced to. What moved even quicker were Gin’s thumbs, and Atsushi was mesmerized combo score on the side of the screen kept going up well into the hundreds. By the time the song ended Gin had gotten a ‘full combo’, and Atsushi was at a loss of words.
It was hard to image that someone as irritable, aloof, and intimidating as Akutagawa would enjoy something that looked so upbeat. That might’ve been the problem; he’d accidently saw a glimpse of something personal to Akutagawa, and the other only saw fit to distance himself as far as possible from him. Unfortunately, that didn’t work in either of their favors. Atsushi told Gin of the arrangement Dazai had made for them, and after a moment of silence, she announced that she had an idea.
The coming Sunday would be her brother’s day off from work, so she invited him over so the two of them could (attempt to) work on their assignment. Atsushi rightfully freaked out, turning her invitation down politely because, well, Akutagawa would kill him. That day he learned Gin could be just as stubborn as her brother, and within a minute she had broken his resolve. They exchanged phone numbers, and before leaving she said it’d be all right if he brought his sister along.
She left zero room for him to protest.
The days leading up to Sunday were tense, because it was clear that Gin hadn’t told her brother about his coming visit since he was still avoiding him. He feared that one day he’d walk on campus and Akutagawa would pounce on him, beating him for daring to even speak to his sister again. To distract himself from the thought of his potential beating, Atsushi downloaded the idol game that’d been the cause of Akutagawa’s behavior shift. He knew of idols (a fairly popular group got their start in Yokohama that Kyouka liked) and rhythm games, but it was his first time seeing the two combined.
Gin made playing the game look easy, and even though Atsushi knew it was from practice, he wasn’t ready for just grueling the gameplay could be. Hidden behind the smiles of cute girls lied a game that tested one’s endurance and hand-eye coordination, neither of which Atsushi possessed. Any live he played above the easy difficulty ended with him barely making a combo or passing…at least the girls commended his efforts which eased the sting of how terrible he’d done. At one point he texted Gin asking if she could give him any pointers, but was shocked to learn that her brother played far better than she did.
He also learned that Gin really liked to use emojis.
When the day finally arrived, he invited Kyouka to go along with him, and his sister nervously fiddled with the strap of her shoulder bag the entire way. Atsushi had his own reasons to be nervous; as far as he knew Akutagawa didn’t know they were coming, and the dread of dealing with that confrontation made his stomach churn uncomfortably. ‘If I’m there, everything will be all right’ Gin had reassured him, but her words did nothing to calm him down the closer they got. Upon reading the find train stop, he was hit with a wave of anxiety that must’ve read on his face, because the next thing he knew Kyouka was tugging at his sleeve and asking if he was okay.
What an awful big brother was…His sister was clearly anxious, yet she pushed her feelings down enough to worry more about him, something he should’ve been doing for her. Yes, he feared Akutagawa killing him, yes, the unease of being invited over to someone’s place for the first time gnawed at him, but first and foremost he was should’ve been looking out for Kyouka. Atsushi took a deep breath before taking her hand, his lips quirking up into a small smile as he tells her he’s fine and that everything was going to be okay. She nodded slowly, her grip around his hand tightening as they left the station.
Atsushi did a decent job keeping himself calm for Kyouka’s sake, but as soon as he stood in front of the door belonging to the Akutagawa’s apartment, it felt like the ground disappeared from under him. He wanted to run, to be a bit selfish and say to hell with Dazai’s threatening assignment, but…abandoning the whole thing left an awful taste in his mouth. Sometimes he really was too duty bound for his own damn good.
With a groan he raises a fist to knock, only stopping once he hears something on the other side of the door. It was a high pitch…’boof’? He doesn’t have time to process it because the door suddenly swings open, Gin greeting the two of them with a bright smile. Atsushi feels Kyouka tense up next to him.
“You made it!” she says while stepping to the side, motioning for them to come in, “Ryuu should be up soon, so you can wait in the living room. Oh, and don’t mind Ra-chan.”
“A-Ah, all right.”
As he slips into the apartment, his sister close behind him, Atsushi wonders who this ‘Ra-chan’ is. Gin hadn’t mention anyone else joining them, but as he removed his shoes he notices Kyouka staring at something. Raising an eyebrow, he follows her line of sight, stopping once he sees a black, puffball like figure peaking around the side of the couch. Atsushi notes the skull shaped tag dangling from a light blue collar, and he doesn’t have to wonder who’d been responsible for that. Pointy ears twitch as Atsushi steps further into the apartment, and beside him he can see an unmistakable sparkle in his sister’s eyes.
Kyouka wants to the pet the dog so badly, and Atsushi knows it’s taking all her self restrain to not run over and do so. Truth be told, Atsushi can’t blame her…the dog is cute. He hears Gin give off an amused sound as she closes the door, his cheeks flushing slightly at how transparent he and his sister look.
“His name is Rashomon. He’s a bit wary of strangers, but I’m sure he’ll warm up to you in no time,” Gin says, and Atsushi can see Kyouka’s eyes ablaze with determination.
The now named Rashomon continues to stare, though his ears stand a bit straighter as he snaps his head in another direction. Atsushi watches as little paws scurry across the floor, and he can’t help but feel disappointed as the dog vanishes around a corner. He and Kyouka sit on the small couch as Gin briefly retreats to the kitchen, and she returns holding a tray of cookies and tea.
“Your brother said you liked bunnies, so I tried to make the cookies look like them. Although, I think some of them came out a little messy,” Gin says as she gives off a nervous laugh.
Kyouka looks surprised that she’s being addressed, but she quickly shakes her head.
“No, they look really cute,” Kyouka says while picking one of the cookies up. “The last batch I made fused into one big cookie when I baked them.”
“I’m sure they still tasted good.”
Atsushi can’t help but smile. His sister isn’t the most social person, and even though she was asked to be a stand in for sports clubs, he’d never once seen her take an interest in joining any. Kyouka never mentioned friends or even people she spoke to at school, and one of her teachers had even expressed to him that they were worried about how closed off she was. So, to see her easily talking to someone else, even smiling, makes Atsushi feel light.
That feeling is quickly replaced with one of utter horror as the sound of footsteps reach his ears. They’re being accompanied by the ‘tap, tap, tap’ of little paws hitting the ground, and it’s clear that Rashomon had disappeared to retrieve his other owner. Atsushi sucks in a breath as Akutagawa comes into view, the other yawning as he runs his fingers through his hair. He takes a step in the direction of the kitchen but suddenly stop, and Atsushi braces for what he knows is coming. Akutagawa slowly turns to look at him, eyes wide and face full of shock.
“…What the hell are you doing here?”
The shocked look on his face quickly turns to anger, and Atsushi wonders briefly if he can grab Kyouka and run for the door before Akutagawa decides to strangle him.
“I invited him and his sister over,” Gin says without missing a beat.
“What? Why-?”
“Because you two have an important assignment to do. You’re usually so diligent when it comes to your school work, so I was disappointed to find out you’ve been slacking.”
Akutagawa shoots him a heated look, but after a short while he clicks his tongue and averts his gaze. He hesitates for second once his sister tells him to have a seat next to her, and he lets out a frustrated sounding sigh as he does so, arms crossing as he mutters something inaudible. Atsushi knows this is great opportunity to start a conversation with Akutagawa, but the situation is still freaking him out. He nervously fiddles with his fingers as he listens to Kyouka and Gin talk about baking, but once the discussion turns to the two of them actually baking, he knows he needs to get his shit together and fast.
Maybe he could talk about Rashomon who’s lounging by Akutagawa’s feet, but there’s a chance the other will catch on that he’s far more interested in his dog than talking to him. Honestly, he’d much rather have a one-sided conversation with the dog. It’s then that he notices what Akutagawa is wearing, or more specifically what is printed on his black t-shirt. Across the bottom in bold white letters is the fictional production company name from the idol game, and on the right side of his chest is the signature of one of the girls. He squints to see whose name is written there, and once he finally makes it out, he sits up a bit straighter.
“You, um…like Satomi?” he says, and Akutagawa tenses up.
His fingers grip his shirt, and Atsushi acts fast before he can run, or worse yet, glare at him with murder in his eyes.
“I’ve only been playing for a couple of days, but I’m not that great at it,” he says while rubbing the back of his neck. “If you don’t mind, could you give me some pointers? I mean, I like the game, but it feels like I’m doing something wrong…”
Akutagawa is still silent, eyes downcast as he stares at Rashomon. His grips his shirt tighter, and Atsushi worries that maybe he overstepped. He knew it’d be a terrible topic to bring up, but it’s better to get the reason for him being there out in the open so they can deal with it. The last thing he wants if for Akutagawa to keep avoiding him, because if Dazai catches wind that they haven’t been working together, there might be hell to pay. Dazai might be a good teacher, but if the rumors are true, he is not the kind of person you’d want to cross.
He jumps slightly when Akutagawa gives off a frustrated sigh.
“Your phone…”
“Huh?”
“Get over here and let me see your phone.”
He practically hisses the words out, and Atsushi knows he needs to comply with the other’s demand. Quickly getting up, he fishes his phone out of his pocket before sitting down next to Akutagawa. He practically snatches it, and he pretty much ignores Atsushi’s sharp ‘hey!’. His annoyance almost gets the better of him, but Atsushi manages to swallow it down while watching Akutagawa unlocks his phone. The game is started up, and the other easily navigates the menu all the way to the options.
“Well, problem number one is that you have the animations for the lives on,” he says, finger clicking the ‘animations off’ button.
“Wait, why does it matter that they’re on?” Atsushi questions, especially since he rather enjoyed seeing the girls dancing in the background- …oh.
“It’s a distraction and it causes lag. If you want to watch the MV so badly, play hard mode to unlock it.”
“Um…MV?”
“…Music. Video.”
Akutagawa looks at him like he’s the dumbest goddamn person he’s ever met, but how the hell was he supposed to know what he meant? Groaning, Akutagawa asks him why he hasn’t changed the timing for the notes, and Atsushi says he thought the best option was to keep it at zero. He’s given that look again, and Akutagawa hand him back his phone, telling him to take the tuning test. Begrudgingly he does as told, and once he’s finished Akutagawa instructs him to play a song.
The difference is evident as soon as he starts. Instead of dancing, there are small versions of the girls in the background that don’t move. Once the notes start falling, he notices that he’s missing them far less than before.
“…Are you looking at the bottom of the screen…?” Akutagawa asks, and Atsushi can feel the condescending air around his words.
“O mighty master of rhythm, where the hell else am I supposed to look?” Atsushi shoots back, and from the corner of his eye he can see the other giving him a nasty look.
“Look in the middle of the screen asshole. You can look at the top where the notes fall, but sometimes they change direction by the time they get to the middle on harder difficulties.”
“Ugh, fine.”
Atsushi plays another song, this time trying to focus on the middle of the screen instead of the bottom. It’s a lot harder than before, so he doesn’t fair that well by the time the song ends. Two hours into Akutagawa barking orders at him and Atsushi shooting back with a smartass comment, Atsushi, as much as he hates to admit it, has gotten better. He’s no pro by any means, but he’d at least gotten himself a few full combos, which gave him a rush of excitement. He even managed to give Akutagawa a smile, who in turn just scoffs and looks away.
“Despite you being a pain in the ass, you’re actually a decent teacher,” Atsushi says while rearranging his party.
“If you weren’t so damn stubborn and listened to me the first time around, maybe things could’ve gone smoother,” Akutagawa says as he fiddles with his own phone.
He gives him a half-hearted ‘yeah, whatever’, and it’s then that his fingers stop moving. He isn’t sure when it happened, but at some point he’d stopped feeling nervous around Akutagawa. It probably helped that the other wasn’t radiating hostility, and simply seemed annoyed with his behavior rather than his very presence. It’s kind of weird. Chancing it, he glances over at Akutagawa who still has a frown on his face, but he looks…a little more relaxed.
“…What? Is there something on my face?” Akutagawa asks, and Atsushi in turn jumps at being caught staring.
“U-Um, no I,” he stutters out while he tries to think of an excuse, “could I…get your friend code?”
“My friends list is full.”
“Then can I get your phone number?”
The words tumble out of his mouth so quickly he doesn’t have time to process them until it’s too late. Akutagawa looks at him with wide eyes, almost comically so, mouth slightly open as he almost drops his phone. He hears a snort from the side of him, and with a quick glance he sees Gin covering her mouth, shoulders shaking as she attempts to contain her laughter.
Oh god, no, no, no.
“Just so I can text you questions about the game!” he says quickly, and he prays his words aren’t a jumbled mess.
The shock on Akutagawa’s face morphs into irritation, and Atsushi feels like kicking himself. Had he chosen his words better, the light mood around them wouldn’t have come crashing down.
“…I swear to god if you text me random shit-”
“I won’t,” Atsushi says, because he knows Akutagawa will delete his number without hesitation if he did something like that.
His phone is taken again, but this time Atsushi makes a small noise of protest since he knew it was coming. Akutagawa types in his phone number before handing it back, and Atsushi in turn texts him his number so he can save it. Now that he thinks about it…Akutagawa’s number will be one of the few he has in his phone. Of course he has Kyouka’s, as well as his job’s, but as for someone outside of family and work…he’d be the first. It gives him a weird feeling, one he can’t place a name to, but it isn’t…unpleasant.
A half an hour later the sun begins to set, and Atsushi thinks it’s about time for him and Kyouka to head back. Gin gives them a bag of the cookies she and Kyouka made, saying if they ever wanted to come over again, all they need to do is ask. Akutagawa makes a face at his sister’s words, but doesn’t say anything to deny her invitation to them. If fact, he just silently stands by the door. Rashomon even allows the two of them to give him a goodbye pet, and Atsushi has never felt more honored in his life.
On the way to the station, Atsushi reflects on the afternoon’s events. Even if he’d driven him up a wall most of the visit, at least Akutagawa was speaking to him again. So, things had worked out to a certain degree, and even though he hadn’t probed the other for information, a few interesting facts had fallen into his lap without him having to ask. It still isn’t enough to complete the paper, but now he and Akutagawa have common hobby to serve as a bridge to other topics. It’s the most progress they’ve made in a while, and Atsushi can’t help but mentally sigh in relief.
Spending time with Akutagawa no longer fills him with dread, and for him that’s a step in the right direction.

Hirotsu: "You're involved in theatre, correct?"
leroux: why indeed. a stagehand in youth, and theatre aficionado, as it were. ^^
Hirotsu: "Ah, good--someone to speak with. I do miss going to shows. The last one was abysmal--the person playing Ophelia couldn't act her way out of a paper bag."
leroux: *LIGHTBULB* why dont we host a production here? *shiny eyes*
Hirotsu: "...Oh, thank God, someone finally recommends it! Yes, please, do! Which plays do you know?"
leroux: which ones DONT i know?! OvO
Hirotsu: "Excellent...but given the quality of, um...potential actors here..."
*Motojiro is talking to a lemon, Kafka is screaming into a pillow, Walter is asleep*
Hirotsu: "Perhaps a simpler play would be the best course of action."
leroux: hmmmm...i'll see what we can come up with!
Hirotsu: *nods* "Thank you."
-elsewhere-
Konro: "Fireworks, huh?"
fang-hua: yes. it's actually how i also discovered my ability, when my brother jin decided to light one in the house. i managed to hold the flame in place.

fang-hua: thankfully no. mom tells me grandpa had the abilities too.
Konro: "But not your mother, so it skipped a generation?"
fang-hua: most likely.
Konro: "How goes business for your family without you there?"
fang-hua: it goes pretty well. we get to bring in shipments to the harbor cities too.
Konro: "By ship?"
fang-hua: by ship, by wagon.
Tsukiyo: "Attach sparklers to the wagon wheels?"
fang-hua: no. *sweatdrop*
Tsukiyo: -3- "Boo."
Konro: ^^; "How are the language lessons going?"
fang-hua: they seem to be coming along well.
Tsukiyo: "What're you teaching them? Just enough to get around town?"
fang-hua: yeah. im also teaching them cultural customs and history.
Tsukiyo: "...Think you'll find out about the first fire demons?"

ojiro: so then, when you said you were going to crush us-

tomura: what?
Izuku: "I...don't accept what either of you have done, the Hero Killer or you...But...I can understand the Hero Killer's reasons, not yours..."
tomura: oh do you?
Izuku: "...For him and for me...we follow ideals inspired by All Might...The Hero Killer even saved me, so even if he's destructive, and even if his methods are wrong, I know he's not just doing this for fun: he's trying to live by some ideal."
tomura: *his face is expressionless, but his eyes have a look of pure, utter hatred*
Izuku: "!!!"
tomura: i get it now...hehehe....i see why he pisses me off so much....and why you irritate me so badly....*wide grin* it's aaaaaall be cause of all might....hehehehehehe, it's soooo obvious! the reason these people go about living, smiling without any trouble, is because of all might and that stupid smiling face, acting like there's no one he can't save. *grips izuku's throat tighter*
Izuku: *coughs, struggling to move--*
