Arathir Starsong - Levistus Tiefling - Harper Agent - College of Swords Bard/Swashbuckler Rogue - Chaotic Good
Art done by the eternally wonderful N8dl3!
After years of waiting, I FINALLY get to play my long-running main character in a long-form campaign, so one final redesign was warranted! We're going into Storm King's Thunder with the intent of branching out from there, and I can't wait to see where his story goes.

Arathir Starsong: Asmodeus Tiefling Bard (College of Swords)/Rogue (Thief). Rough approximation of my long-running D&D character.
A few shots from the early game here before I learned that f10 hides the UI. Few companion scenes, plus Arathir's dream visitor.

ARATHIR STARSONG
Race: Tiefling (Mephistopheles Bloodline) Class: Lore Bard / Hexblade Warlock of Lurue Background: Entertainer Alignment: Chaotic Good Deity: Lurue, the Unicorn Queen Birthdate: 5 Hammer, 1468 DR  Campaign Setting: Forgotten Realms Affiliations: The Harpers, Force Grey
A horned tiefling, strikingly blue in color, sits at the hearth and softly plucks at a harp as the clamor of the tavern begins to die down. Your eyes catch his for a moment, and he responds with a gentle smile and a nod before turning his gaze to his lovingly held instrument. For a moment, you swear that you can see a glittering butterfly flying away from him, but it disappears into the moonlight coming through a nearby window before you can focus on it...
ARATHIR STARSONG is a native son of Waterdeep, the City of Splendors and the crown jewel of the Sword Coast. Abandoned as an infant, Arathir never knew his birth parents or any blood family; instead he grew up in the care of Ozma Starsong, a kind dwarven librarian and priestess of Oghma, who found him and adopted him as her own son.
Growing up surrounded by books and lore, Arathir’s mind has always been occupied by dreams of heroes, of mighty warriors and cunning sorcerers, of dashing rogues and devious villains. The boy went from story to story, reading each in a sitting and excitedly telling visitors and passerby of the grand tales he held so dear. It was only natural that Arathir would come to pursue the art of storytelling as a career, and with stories in mind and a harp in hand Arathir entertained the gathered masses of many a tavern in Waterdeep.
The popularity of the young bard grew among the low and high class denizens of the city alike, and Arathir earned invitations to many functions. At grand balls he learned to dance, at tourneys he learned to wield the blade, and from wizardly congregations he learned to shape the arcane into form. Arathir's myriad skills lent themselves to telling the tales of legendary heroes, but there was one tale he yearned to learn of above all else; his own.
Arathir could only bear to sing the praises of others for so long. He yearned to be a hero in his own right, a savior of the helpless and a guardian of the defenseless, a paragon adored for his quick hand and silver tongue. He aspired to defeat evil monsters and tyrants, and to someday join the fabled Harpers that he held as role models since he was a child.
The call of adventure came one day during a rowdy evening in the Yawning Portal tavern, where a chance encounter with Mango the Wizard and Arthur the Paladin-in-training propelled Arathir into the first of many quests. Arathir’s legend had begun; but was it more than he bargained for? Or would he earn his place among the stars?
Arathir’s adventures have led him to making the acquaintance of many powerful allies and enemies alike. Accompanied by the sardonic Gnome Wizard Nissa “Mango” Ningel and the aspiring Halfling Paladin Arthur Lightmight, Arathir has braved many dangers and has discovered many lost mysteries in his brief yet prolific career.
The most notable of artifacts possessed by the young bard is Alicorn, a mysterious silver longsword bearing the motif of a unicorn. The blade, found in the Undermountain and awoken by the light of the full moon, conferred to Arathir the powers of the Feywild. Arathir wields these powers in tandem with his bardic abilities as a Hexblade Warlock, dedicated to Lurue the Unicorn Queen.
During the quest for the mysterious Stone of Golorr, Arathir fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming an agent for the mysterious organization known as the Harpers. As a Harper, Arathir carries out missions in the name of promoting good and preserving lost histories.
Arathir and his friends have held their own against powerful enemies such as Belak the shadow druid, the foul mummified centaur warrior of the Temple of Ubtao, and even the founder of the Zhentarim, Manshoon.
The trio of adventurers has yet to meet their true fate; with luck, the stars shall look favorably upon their quest for the Stone of Golorr and the pursuits they partake in the future.

Character Tropes Tagging Game
I’ve been tagged by @athiefswarwriteblr! Thank you so much!
Rules: Pick up to three(3) of your characters and assign them an archetype or trope they fit. Then say why they don’t wholly fit that trope.
For this I’ll be using this website as reference:
The Rebel - Razimarr Quartz
“A rebel is mad as hell and they’re not going to take it anymore. In the face of an unjust society, they are the ones with the will to overthrow the status quo. A rebel might be a charismatic leader, but they also might work in secret. They can be a freedom fighter, or rock musician, or the girl in chemistry class with the purple highlights in her hair.”
Raz doesn’t exactly meet the typical example of the rebel archetype, as rebels are usually trying to change society at large, whereas my dumb cat boy is just trying to change the hand life dealt him. He was born into a home filled with hunger and discord, as was the case for all other catfolk in his village. He’s not seeking to make their lives better, and any social change he causes is incidental for most of the series.
Notably, The Rebel archetype usually attacks the unjust and oppressive structures as a means for change, while Raz - for many years - rejects society itself and lives a life of lawlessness. Even once he leaves the cartel and seeks atonement, his pursuits are as a vigilante outside the realm of law, targeting organized crime that springs from societal injustice.
The Caregiver - Nerharr Quartz
“Selflessness is the defining attribute of this character type. They might be a mother, father, wife, husband, or best friend — whoever they are, they’ll do anything to protect their child, ward, lover, or best bud. It’s quite rare for the caregiver to take center stage but such is the nature of one so selfless.”
Ahh Nerharr...you sad poor man. Raz’s father most closely matches The Caregiver archetype, but in a tragic and perverted sense where his care and love does more harm than good. Nerharr Quartz is a man crippled with depression, self-doubt, and self-loathing, resulting from losing his entire immediate family before the age of 16, and shortly afterwards unexpectedly becoming a father himself at only 19.
Drunk and pitiful, Nerharr sees himself as a blight on Raz’s life, but he does genuinely love his son. Raz’s mother is an abusive woman, and Nerharr does his best to direct her verbal and emotional violence towards himself, believing that he can take it while Raz cannot. Unfortunately, because he sees himself as a blight, Nerharr tries to maintain emotional distance from his son so that his own failures won’t corrupt him, viewing such space as being in Raz’s best interests. This, in the end, only makes Raz feel abandoned and neglected, which later feeds into the resentment that drives him to run away.
The Ruler - Terasas Feldspar
“Heavy hangs the head that wears the crown. Any society needs a leader, but how does that leader cope with absolute power? What will they do to maintain control and order? Do they rule with kindness and compassion or with an iron fist?”
Terasas embodies this archetype well and in its most positive sense. The young boy from Coalfell has always existed to be Raz’s foil in addition to friend, confidant, and brother-in-arms against life’s trials; they both come from the same place, born in similar circumstances, and yet Terasas is the one who keeps his head held high and walks in the light despite losing as much - if not more - than his own friend.
While I’m choosing not to go into too much about Terasas’ path as to avoid spoilers, before the campaign started he wound up being the lieutenant guard-captain in a small fishing town far from Coalfell, admired by the populace. He’s a man others are drawn towards, and his natural leadership inspires change all around him.

Arathir Starsong
Levistus Bloodline Tiefling - College of Swords Bard - Chaotic Good
I commissioned new art of my bard Arathir, since it’s looking like I’ll get to play him again soon! The artist is n8dl3, who you can find on Instagram and twitter!
Arathir is an entertainer and duelist-for-hire from Waterdeep, the City of Splendors. An adopted son of a dwarf clan of librarians and lore-keepers, Arathir grew up surrounded by stories of heroes and great deeds. After the loss of his lover on a distant voyage, Arathir took to adventure as a way of finding himself, hoping to write his own tale instead of just singing the stories of others.
Full backstory summary under the cut.
Arathir Starsong is a Levistus Tiefling, a bard of the College of Swords and an agent of the Harpers. He is a native of Waterdeep and an adopted son of the Starsong Dwarf Clan, a clan of lore-keepers and librarians. Before taking to adventuring, Arathir made his way as an entertainer, a duelist-for-hire, and a vigilante working with the Red Sashes under the command of Durnan of the Yawning Portal.
A lover of Waterdeep's thrilling and often dangerous nightlife, Arathir thrived on being the center of attention and crashed many upscale parties, despite not being a nobleman himself. At one of these parties, he had the fortune of sharing a dance with Vesper, a daughter of the Moonstar noble family, and with this woman he shared a short-lived but passionate romance. The two were engaged and planned to elope, leaving Waterdeep to see the Sword Coast and beyond with one another.
However, Vesper's disappearance on a long voyage lost at sea threw Arathir into a deep depression, which made him long for self-discovery. He realized that all his life he was raised on stories of heroes and learned to sing songs of the deeds of others. Without Vesper, Waterdeep felt empty; Arathir decided that the time had come to stop singing the stories of others and begin writing his own tale.
I created Arathir as a character when I was younger and 3.5 was still the reigning edition. Since then he has undergone many changes and iterations, including a plane-traveling theater star from Sigil and a chosen wielder of a sword inhabited by a servant of Lurue the Archfey. I finally got a chance to play him in a campaign a few years ago, but it sadly never came to a complete ending. However, with my current long-term group, it's looking like he will be making a comeback! I can only hope that this time will be the one, and his full story will come to be.

Arathir is a Chaotic Good Tiefling Lore Bard/Hexblade Warlock. I’ve been playing him in our main campaign for almost a year now and it has been so much fun. I’m super happy to have him immortalized in a beautiful piece of art like this.
