Some texture testing on the Throne of Arlen, which is having its previous (frankly kinda crude) surfaces and textures pulled off it and new ones applied.

Color differences between the carved areas and the plain wood are being kept to a minimum at the moment until the positions of the carved stuff, and the places where there should be nothing but wood grain, have been sorted out. This is partly because there are three separate graphics files responsible for the colors and the appearance of the 3D features, and balancing their effects off against one another gets complicated. It's also partly because I haven't yet made final decisions about what whitestave wood (which the Throne is made of) looks like when it weathers. And how it weathers.

(For those curious, the our-Earth "behavioral" model for this kind of wood is Pinus cembra, the Swiss stone pine or Arolla pine, called arvenholz on its own turf. It's an extremely durable, slow-growing, dense-grained and fragrant wood, much used for construction and in furniture [like what you can see here]. Arvenholz starts its life with a very pale cream-colored grain, and over the years weathers down to white, silver or shades of dark silver-grey, depending on conditions. While Middle Kingdoms whitestave wood isn't a member of the pine family but rather of the Oleaceae—see the bottom of this article for details—whitestave and arvenholz could otherwise easily be mistaken for each other in terms of the way they weather.)

Anyway, rebuilding this piece of furniture is being complicated by having to reverse-engineer the new textures from the original ones... improving them where possible and otherwise making the desired changes in what are sometimes kludgy and imperfect ways. Places where the wood's been smoothed completely light over centuries of handling or polishing are going to have to be rendered that way by hand-erasing the texture overlays—or artificially building them up with custom brushing, depending on how given files express (or fake) height or texture.

(shrug) What can I say? I'm a glutton for punishment. ...Meanwhlle, the King's expression suggests that this particular cat's position may possibly lack long-term stability. :) Better his problem than mine...

Was struck with sudden motivation after I heard about the myth of the Jiaoren and had to make a new esper OC from the game Dislyte-

CONTENT WARNING FOR SA:

This is Arlen-! A young man living in Rashina Graywater, struggling to repay his family's debt to a gang of loan sharks...Who...Have sadly been all too keen, on preying on the boy's awakening.

After all, the tears of an Jiaoren, turn into pearls.

Used and abused as their cash cow, Arlen is forced to perform on stage for the wealthy underworld elite, forced into brothels despite only having just turned 18- They milk him for every tear he can shed, and for his other...talents, the Jiaoren has given him.

Still, despite it all, he lies to his parents and tell them that he's found a lucrative job- Selling his crafts.

He just has to survive, he thinks...Just needs to wait for the storm to pass...

Then surely they can all leave this wretched town, and return to the oceanside his family dreams of.

....Right?

Arlen is an alien from my Crew X setting, and a member of the main crew. He's a business major in training, though he's not quite sure that what he wants to do with his life.

○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ NAME: Arlen of Myah ALIASES: N/A SPECIES: Usually called "Rockhoppers" or "Fishbirds" by those who don't speak the native tongue. PRONOUNS: He/Him

○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ HISTORY Arlen is an alien hailing from a large, oceanic planet known as "RC-1854" in the general database, though those more familiar with it call it "Rock". He was born into an extremely wealthy and well known family, and is currently their only child. Because of this, he was "encouraged" to be as successful as his parents, who put him into only the best education with plans on him becoming a successful business owner and to one day take over his parent's empire, which consisted of several clothing and electronics brands. Though his parents were not abusive, they refused to take no for an answer ("Because we love you and want to see you succeed!"), and he ended up being too much of a pushover to say no when they sent him on a business trip with one of their shareholders to a small, artificial planet to observe deal-making in action. That is where he accidentally ran into a human, osimian, faenae and two frillnecks who ended up roping them into accidentally escaping with a harbored fugitive; and until they can figure it out, he remains on the run with the rest of the crew, providing most of their funds out of his own generous allowance.

○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ PERSONALITY As it turned out, being raised by parents who didn't take no for an answer and expected only the best puts a strain on any child that last until adulthood, leaving Arlen a good deal anxious, and a large deal dependent on others. Many would describe him as a pushover, who prefers to keep his mouth shut than attempt to defend himself- mostly because he really doesn't know how. In fact, he just doesn't know a lot of things about general, "normal" things, as he was raised mostly sheltered in higher-class sectors. That isn't to say he's stupid, however. Though anxious, he knows his way around social situations well, able to stuff down his fear when he puts on his 'rich boy' mask, smooth talking his way through social situations and numbers with a grace most people would be envious of... though afterwards he often collapses into a shaky mess. Perhaps, if he hadn't been raised so strictly, he might have been a rebellious, independent, even sassy rockhopper, as there are rarely times when it will slip out- and maybe one day he might still. But for now, he remains rather timid and eager to please.

So one of the most interesting (and well known) things about behind the scenes on King of The Hill is the do's and don'ts manual put together for the animators. Outside of providing a good basis for the designs of the characters, you can also see a lot of the personalities that would develop as the series went on (especially in Hank's don'ts). These are really interesting and there are a lot more in both the article linked and around the internet, so be sure to check them out if you haven't. I'm still trying to learn more about these so if anyone has any extra info lmk! (Also I am a massive fan of dog-Hank in the bottom right corner)
