And now for something new
So, here's something I was never planning on doing, but I just couldn't shake the idea... Thanks Ken Penders is gaining a sister blog featuring an entirely different comic franchise!
Introducing... Thanks Steve Ditko, a blog where I read the Earth-616 Spider-Man comics, starting all the way back in the '60s! It's gonna be much more casual and less thorough than how I run things here on TKP, though, which I'll explain in a sec.
Tumblr media
If seeing me post weird bits from old Spider-Man comics sounds fun and you need no further info, then just head right on over to Thanks Steve Ditko. But for longtime TKP readers, I know you probably have questions...
Number one: Why?
Spider-Man's always been my favorite superhero, and with the Spider-Verse movies kicking ass and my excitement building for the new Insomniac game, I've been in a Spidey mood. Inevitably, a thought occurred to me: Maybe I should actually read the comics that everything else is built off of and see the wildly varying contributions of all the original creators, rather than filtering them through big budget adaptations. If I can power through One Piece and all these other manga with hundreds of chapters, it can't be that hard... right?
And, well, after a few issues I quickly realized that my options were to either clog up my other accounts with random Spider-Man panels for years, or to just make a side blog. And so the side blog was born.
Two: Will this blog replace Thanks Ken Penders?
NO!!!!!!!!!
Okay but prove it
To allow the two to exist side-by-side, Thanks Steve Ditko will have a different format than what Thanks Ken Penders developed. Rather than an in-depth guided tour that critically analyzes every story beat of every issue, TSD will just be a place for amusing panels and brief thoughts as I casually read the comics at my own pace.
If you've seen me make a few tweets about reading Spider-Man recently, I'm basically just moving that to a dedicated Tumblr. It's a place for me to dump these things so that it doesn't fill up my media tab on Twitter for the next decade. (You know, assuming Twitter is still around in a decade.) There will be many issues where I only post two panels that I thought were funny. There will be issues where I don't have anything to say at all. Maybe I'll reach a run that I just cannot get into, and I start skipping around more. Who knows!
This may sound similar to what I thought this blog would be before it blew up. Aside from the simple fact that there's already mountains of Spider-Man commentary out there and therefore less of a void for me to fill, one of the main steps I'll be taking to avoid repeating the past is not enabling an ask box on TSD. I do not need people to ask me to go into ten times more detail on everything. I do not need to write seven essay-length responses to questions about Spider-Man minutiae every day. I do not need a place for people to chide me for not covering certain scenes, issues, or ancillary series.
It also won't have any kind of update schedule. I'm trying to keep it very casual. I'm reading these comics at my own pace, and if I feel like sharing a moment or commenting on something while doing so? It goes there. That's it.
(On the subject of format changes, I'm also listing the issue, writer, and penciller in the body of every post. This is a thing I wish I'd done on TKP so that people didn't misattribute every weird Archie Sonic panel I post to Penders.)
Three: So when will TKP come back from hiatus? You said it'd come back after you finished SLARPG!
I don't know! Sorry. I have a couple things on the backburner right now for TKP, but I'm not sure when I'll get back to proper updates where I read more comics.
I wanted to bring TKP back this year, and that's still possible. The main hurdle is that I want to reread my own archive (again) as a refresher, which is, uh. A lot of posts. I've developed a high standard for myself on here, and I feel like I wouldn't be doing my job right if I forgot half the ongoing subplots and character arcs and didn't bring them up in my analysis. Especially when I'm discussing the work of an author as obsessed with continuity as Ian Flynn. Unfortunately, the nature of this blog means that every time I go on another long hiatus for Life Reasons I have even more comic continuity to catch up on than last time.
(This is a big part of why I'm making Thanks Steve Ditko an extremely casual blog instead of promising to become a Lore Expert on 60+ years of Marvel.)
Mostly I've just been very burnt out this year after having finally finished a video game that took almost eight years to make. I haven't really had the energy for any creative projects, including TKP. But I feel a little bit of a spark here with Spider-Man, so I'm chasing that feeling to try to get back into the swing of blogging about comics - no pun intended.
So, basically, bear with me on this as I start this low-energy side project. But hopefully folks will enjoy Thanks Steve Ditko as its own thing, too.
Look forward to goofy shit like this

"Comfort in a Thunderstorm"
Happy Wholesome Sonic and Tails Wednesday!!!! 🥰 So I've actually drawn a ton of things for them but obviously gotta post them one at a time 😂 I had something else planned but then another fic suddenly materialized in my docs so I was like "welp"
Haha, enjoy!
Quick desc: "Sonic & Tails' first thunderstorm experience together."
------------
Sonic didn’t like the rain.
For one, he wasn’t a big fan of water in general, although he mainly didn’t like being in it. But rain often made it harder to run. He’d lost track of the amount of times he’d slipped in wet grass, or crashed into a mud puddle, or been blinded by a downpour and ran into a tree or something.
He didn’t like it, but he wasn’t afraid of it.
As he was soon to learn, it was a different story for Tails.
It had started sprinkling around the late afternoon, and by sundown it was pouring. The skies were overcast with dark, almost black clouds. They’d need to stop and find shelter somewhere, Sonic decided. It was already hard enough to keep moving during the day in the heavy rain. It would only be worse to try and get through it in the dark.
Tails had seemed unusually quiet. Sure, he didn’t talk a whole lot to begin with, but sometimes his little brother would go on rambles about something new he’d discovered; usually about mechanics and technology. The kid had taken a liking to such things the moment he’d first discovered them, and although he didn’t have any of his own tools and techy stuff yet, he was taking every opportunity to learn as much about it as he could. He’d been fascinated by Sonic’s plane, the Tornado, ever since he’d first laid eyes on it. Sonic had been thinking about buying him a computer or something for his birthday, whenever that was.
Did he actually understand all the stuff Tails told him about? No, not really. But it was fun to listen to him go on and on about his passions.
Tonight, however, his little brother had been silent for a couple hours at least. When Sonic glanced back to check on him, the little fox’s blue eyes were wide and nervous.
He cleared his throat as he stopped for a moment. “You okay, buddy?”
Tails jumped and looked up at him. “Yes!” he answered, a little too quickly. “Where are we gonna sleep tonight?”
Sonic looked up and scanned the horizon. “Dunno yet. I don’t see any trees. We might have to settle for burrowing tonight.”
“We shouldn’t go under a tree, anyway,” Tails protested. “If it starts making thunder, we might get struck by lightning if it hits the tree.”
Sonic looked down at him, surprised. “Oh, okay.” He glanced around. “I just don’t want to get flooded if we go underground is all.”
The little fox stared around for a moment. Something still seemed off about his demeanor, but Sonic couldn’t put his finger on it.
“Well, guess we’ll just keep moving until we find somewhere safe to stay for the night.” He sighed, then held out his hand. “Stay close, kiddo.”
It had taken him a while to get Tails to be comfortable with touch when they’d first met— which, granted, hadn’t been too long ago. A little under a year, perhaps? But Tails had been sensitive to it as a result of the bullying he’d had to endure before Sonic had met him and intervened. So it was safe to say that Sonic was a little taken aback when Tails not only took his hand immediately, he grabbed his entire arm and clung to it with both hands, standing barely a couple inches away from him.
They started walking, although Tails was more shuffling to keep up with Sonic’s longer paces. “You feeling okay, bud?” Sonic finally made himself ask.
His little brother hesitated for several seconds, then mumbled, “I’m just sleepy.”
It had been a long day. “Want me to carry you?”
“…Yeah.”
Sonic stopped walking, turned to crouch down, and held out his arms. Tails quietly climbed into his grasp, and as Sonic stood up again, this time holding his brother against his chest and one shoulder, he realized Tails was shaking. His heart rate seemed a little too fast, too.
But his little brother had already shown he didn’t want to talk about whatever was bothering him, so Sonic just held him close and continued walking, occasionally rubbing one hand over the fox kit’s back.
Maybe five minutes of silence passed before thunder started rumbling in the distance. Sonic kept moving, but he felt Tails stiffen slightly in his arms.
Finally, he spotted a few small caves just beyond the hill they were approaching. “Eureka!” he cheered quietly, and Tails made a tiny noise of acknowledgment. They were just entering the mouth of the biggest cave when a loud crack of thunder exploded just over their heads.
To Sonic’s surprise, Tails yelped at the sound and clung to him ever tighter, whimpering. Sonic just continued to hold him, even as he walked in deeper and sat down against a wall. He was tempted to ask some questions, but figured it was better to just stay quiet and be there for comfort.
Four cracks of thunder and four mini screams from Tails later, his little brother finally said something.
“I-I don’t like thunderstorms.”
“I got that, buddy,” Sonic replied quietly, trying for a teasing tone, but instantly regretted it. Tails probably wasn’t in the mood for jokes and sarcasm.
“That’s okay,” he added, after another few seconds’ hesitation. “You don’t have to be embarrassed. Everyone has fears.”
“Not you,” his brother mumbled.
Sonic paused. While it was true he liked to go about boasting that he feared nothing, it . . . wasn’t necessarily all true. He didn’t fear Eggman. He didn’t fear pain. He didn’t fear death. But . . .
He sighed. “No . . . I have fears too, buddy,” he forced himself to admit, and one of Tails’ ears perked up.
“Really? What is it?”
Oh boy, this was painful, but anything for your family, Sonic supposed. “A couple things, actually,” he confessed, albeit very softly. “I . . . had some bad experiences with water when I was younger. And I never learned to swim, so . . . you could say I’m afraid of drowning.”
Tails’ big blue eyes were bigger than ever. “Really?”
“Yup. That, and . . .”
“And what?”
Sonic exhaled heavily, then leaned back a little so he could meet the fox kit’s gaze more easily. “Losing you. Anything bad happening to you, actually.”
It took a moment, but that actually put a huge smile on Tails’ face. He was still shivering from his own fears, but he looked downright warm and fuzzy inside as he lay back down against Sonic’s chest, a light purr rumbling from his chest. “I love you,” he mumbled through a tired smile.
Sonic had never been one to express emotions or be all sappy, but dang it, everything was different with Tails. “Love you too, bro,” he whispered back, hugging him just a little tighter.
And they stayed like that for the rest of the night. Tails still jumped at every clap of thunder and whimpered here and there, but Sonic just kept holding him. Eventually, surely after another few hours had passed, Tails had fallen asleep, still cradled in his older brother’s arms. Sonic took a few minutes to enjoy the peacefulness of the moment before surrendering to sleep himself.

(again, I made the art before I wrote the fic, so that's why it's a different setting. Although the pic could also just be a general occurrence, not this specific one 🤷‍♀️😂)

Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed!

Over two weeks ago I made this post
And here it is.
Sonic gets attacked by new eggman robots that he cannot damage in any way, and he gets separated from all his friends.
His only leads are:
The robots are similar to the ones from Starfall Islands
A gut feeling that Sage might be involved
A mysterious medallion he found after nearly drowning to death appears to reveal a map to a location he's never been in
Creative process beneath the "read more"
So, Sonic Underground came out in between the JP and US releases of Sonic Adventure, meaning it is completely divorced from moder Sonic media.
I always wanted to make a post-frontiers story that didn't involve some form of Evil Sonic or dead/missing Sonic.
I also noticed how few appearances Sonic makes in my usual stories, so I thought him as a focus would have been fun and a change of pace.
I watched Sonic Underground a lot as a kid, and I have held to this day that the most interesting thing that show did was giving Sonic two siblings to bounce off of that are the same age as him.
Now for the actual fic:
Most of my fics are LARP'd / music daydreamed before I write them down, which is why most of them are based on songs, and this one is... Actually an exception.
The post linked at the top is essentially how I came up with if this one. "What if Sonic Underground comes after Frontiers", and that's it.
That means that Sonic, Manic and Sonia have been apart for many years after their childhoods and that influenced how I wrote them.
I wrote Manic as a sort of community pillar vibe because of his scrappy upbringing evolving into a sense of community and activism. It also complemented with the decision to make a cymbal shield his main weapon of choice which does appear on the show. Him always breaking silences will be a running gag, don't you worry.
Sonia is a little more stick in the mud, mostly because right now she's in "business" mode, and I do plan to have her relax a bit as they make progress in saving the world. Also, the keyboard gun is not my invention, it's in the show, and that influenced her personality in this first chapter for sure.
Sonic is Sonic. Self explanatory in my opinion. The main changes from canon I suppose is that he's a lot more awkward around the other triplets, which just came about naturally, the fact that he's careful now (I imagine because Tails eventually gave him an earful about his attitude in Starfall Islands). Changing the laser guitar into a guitar sword is my firm belief that's how they'd do it if Underground had come out after Sonic and the Black Knight. It also helps him stand out from Sonia who also shoots lasers.
The most important thing I avoided was making the triplets eager to call eachother siblings. There's no way they get there quickly, they've lived their own lives for far too long. Manic being excited about it probably says something about his character.
The ending of this chapter comes from me realizing the seven chaos emeralds aren't a thing in Sonic Underground, and wanting to incorporate that in some way.
Also Infinite! What's he doing here? Not too sure.
And that's the gist of it

Sort of follow up to the previous Sage and Kit comic
Version with my chicken scratch handwriting and further thoughts on both comics below the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I think my own lettering has more of a punch than just typing it out, ultimately what’s important is that people can read the thing and I don’t have the most steady arms.
I really wanted to show off the thumbnails for these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mostly posted these because they look silly, but also you might notice a few differences for the longer comic. Mainly that I changed the composition of Starline’s two panels to better contrast his first and last meeting with Eggman, and Surge had a panel dedicated to more about her removed for the sake of pacing.
I’ve been very happy to see how people have reacted to the first comic! There have been so many different takeaways for it, which is exactly what I wanted! And also a lot of variants of "OOOOOO" which is a joy. It’s very much from Sage’s point of view, and trying to capture her mindset was tricky.
I originally had a different direction in mind; in it Sage was more dismissive of Kit, that she thought that she was somehow better than him. But Sage never really questions the nature of her relation to Eggman, and I realized that as an AI designed to serve she would simply see Kit as fulfilling his function. The point of the comic was to just compare and contrast the two, so I left it more open ended as too how exactly she feels about Kit.
This little comic blurb is a sort of amalgamation of two separate ideas for Sage and Kit. Sage’s being that as the only kid in the entirety of the Eggpire she doesn’t really have anyone around her age to hang out with. I never decided on a direction for that one, so I revisited the idea here.
Kit was more complicated; I thought if he was ever to begin the healing process, he'd have to learn that someone else out there genuinely cares about him. That he doesn't exist for someone else, that he doesn't need to fulfill a need, someone can care for you just because. I'd like to explore this with Tails, that long after the events of Overpowered he wonders if they are really okay and goes just to see if they are alive. I felt that Tails' opinion on the whole thing was underdeveloped, due to a much heavier focus on the new kids and challenging the main character's worldview. But it's a shame that Tails, while clearly a kind kid who really wanted the best for Kit and Surge, only gave Kit his attention when Kit was a threat that needed to be taken care of. Their first meeting was really good, it's left up to interpretation if Tails was just lowering Kit's guard or actually complimenting him, or both! (I like to think both) But afterwards they didn't have another aha moment because there was so much stuff going on. This is probably a consequence of having both a lot of things happening at once and also repeating the same story beat of big fight then split up three times over the course of the arc. Tails needs to meet Kit in a context that isn't "let's wait for Sonic to fix it". I think that the brief time they had Kit at the Restoration's place could of been the moment to show Tails reaching out in a calmer context. Ofc Kit probably wouldn't care because his programming kicked in and he was laser-focused on Sonic, but point is I wish we had more of Miles' take on the whole thing. Thankfully Sage could make a better first impression, though like Tails with Sonic she would have to convince Kit she isn't doing this for Eggman.
So many directions to take these guys and so little time....

Tails doesn’t actually have bad social skills, contrary to most tv geniuses. He’s usually comfortable talking to people. He usually keeps things on other peoples level, only occasionally dipping into technobabble (varies depending on portrayal). He doesn’t say awkward things or accidentally insult people. For a kid with a physical abnormality who was bullied for it and profoundly gifted status, he’s pretty well adjusted!
I’m guessing Sonic was a huge factor in socializing him. He may not be as forward or bold as Sonic, but he can learn how to talk to strangers, what it means to be witty, how to deal with difficult situations.
He’s also very pro-social. He loves helping people! Even though he seems to prefer being by himself (his houses across media tend to be in more isolated locations. Compare him living in Mystic Ruins to Amy living in Station Square), he has no problem being friendly and social and seems to enjoy being around people. He doesn’t seem to need it and is perfectly happy on his own messing around with his projects, but he doesn’t resent social activity and sees himself as part of his community!
I honestly like that about his character. It would be easy to write him as an arrogant genius with a chip on his shoulder (and some portrayals come close to this), or to really milk the angst and portray him as this permanent outsider… but he isn’t. That’s actually something he presumably got over early in life because he met Sonic. He went on so many adventures with him that it gave him a lot of self confidence and a sense of integration into community.
His major problem is figuring out how to be himself, which is why so much media surrounding Tails focuses on him finding his own style. In SA1, his theme song is probably as clear as it gets about this:
When all alone in my bed, I just go about yearnin'
I wanna be cool, I also wanna be like him
But that's not somethin' I can do so easily
This is not simply my way, my style
Gotta get a hold of my life
… Tails can’t be like Sonic because he is not Sonic. He doesn’t have the same skills Sonic has. He’s become more courageous but he’s not as bold as Sonic is. He can never be as fast as Sonic, even if he can keep up with Sonics normal running pace. He’s not as strong as Sonic. They are different people, but Tails still seems to hold on to the dream of being someone like Sonic.
This is why Sonic reassuring him focuses on the things he can do - he can fly, he’s an expert at mechanics, and he can still keep up with Sonic. His journey involves accepting himself as he is and seeing his unique skills as just as valuable as Sonic’s. To serve his community like he wants to, he needs to realize himself as an individual.
And that’s such a cool arc for him! A journey of self acceptance that doesn’t involve brooding or self hatred, but rather letting go of unrealistic expectations. It would be so easy to make his arc about how it’s so hard 😢 to be the smartest person in the room 😢 or the opposite, that he’s too arrogant and needs to be taken down a leg. But neither of these are his problem, and I love that. He’s not a jerk, he’s not condescending, he’s not self-obsessed. He wants to help people because he cares about his community, not to validate his ego. As much as he’s still a tv genius, he avoids some of those well worn paths to focus on different questions, and I love that about his writing.

After rewatching sonic prime alot of times i can finally give my honest reveal:
Season 3 really dissapointing
S1 and S2 were really great tho!
S1: "2nd fav. season" (don't got much to say abt it 🙃)
- sonic his charactertisation felt kinda weird, he ignored his friends and is impulsive to the max
- sonic realising what he has done was kinda sad
- nine was AWESOME
S2: "fav. season"
- i liked the aspect of sonic going on a chase through the shatterverse to collect the shards
- the pirates were ASSHOLES!
- forest part never got me hooked so much
- good fights not too many and the pace went well (for me)
- CHAOS SONIC THE SILLY ❤️
- i wanted more chaos sonic he was a dark mirror of sonic himself and it was really intersting
- Once again nine was a fucking badass
- the betrayel was executed well ig
Sonic was really ignorant to nine but nine got his own faults too
But the line: "like the real tails would, I am REAL!" was so raw and the pain i can only imagine nine felt in that moment...
S3: "least fav. season ofcourse"
- i enjoyed evil tails very much
- episode 1 was fantastic but shadow being pulled out of the picture was bullshit
I also wanted a longer reaction to the betrayel of nine, i saw a comic dub of sonic having a panic attack. Now i know that is far too many of emotions for sonic to be allowed, but atleast they could've showed some tears and panic
- the fight episodes got bland real fast.
Just fighting the same ol' robots again, they get defeated, nine repairs them, the same again
- i did like episode 6 tbh...
The fight of the iconic duo and later the iconic trio was my favo fight in the season
Beautifully crafted
- episode 7..... where to begin?
To begin with: nine his redemption was forced and executed garBAGE
Sonic just went from, this motherfucker needs to PAY for his action to, aw im sorry i saw 1 palmtree and i understand why you wanted to murder me.
Aside from that i almost liked the rest of ep7
The race against time with sonic to save him from certain death was really wholesome
The Amy's were fucking cute and knux carried my sonknux heart ❤️
Shadow rescuing sonic was beautiful and i LOVED it very much
BUT! sonic should've had more emotion to seeing his friend again.
That cliffhanger was totally unnecessary and we know now that is just a symbol for sonic and his friends running into a brand new adventure
Couple other notes:
- voice acting was fucking awesome!
@mactheactor killed it (i want him to be the main sonic tbh
he is up there in my top 3 VA for sonic with @snapscube sonic aka penny parker and jason griffith (1st: penny sonic, 2nd: devon sonic, 3d: jason sonic)
he got the cockiness and the teenager vibe of sonic like jason and ryan have for example
he has all the talent and passion, emotion for the voice and it felt like i actually heared sonic himself)
- animation was really good!
i am not trying to bring the series down!!
i am just saying my thoughts but the series is amazing and should definitely deserve a watch if you like sonic things or if you just like action or multiverse thingies
That was my review of sonic prime i love to hear yur opinions on my review and what you agree and dont with ❤️

Wait that was KENTA??
Tumblr media
Summary: Kenta makes progress in feeling comfortable around x-hunter. Very heavy on Alan being a supportive and perfect. (Its rush pls don't judge to harsh I beg)
3rd pov
After everything that had happened X-Hunter and friends more or less taken Kenta in. While he had contributed to the terrible things Tony was doing it was pretty clear that he never actually wanted to and at the end of the day he was a good person forced to do bad things.
Kenta was appreciative of the fact that they were so keen to have him around but that didn't mean he didn't struggle to be comfortable. He couldn't bring himself to do or ask for anything if it could potentially even slightly inconvenience someone.
He didn't doubt that they were happy to do things for him or even just be there for him but he had never been allowed to want and asking Tony for something usually had its consequences. He felt as if he still wasn't allowed to ask for anything not that he would even know how.
He also didn't feel right joining in on the way they all teased each other. The playful jabs that would be met with a light hearted sarcastic comment. What if they took him as actually being mean? What if he just wasn't allowed? He just couldn't risk losing what he had with them.
Fortunately he had a new family that was very stubborn.
Kenta pov
"North and Sonic are gonna go to the store tomorrow to stock up the pantry at the garage is there anything you want them to grab for you?" Alan asked me. I've been working there doing paperwork since everything calmed down and I really enjoy how kind everyone is here.
"No it's okay I don't need anything," I tell him. This is true while I do have snacks and drinks I like I don't actually need any of them. I know that's not the answer he wants but that's all I can bring myself to give for now.
"Kenta that's not what I asked and I know that it's hard for you to ask for things and I also know that one conversation is not going to fix that but I promise you that we all want to be there for you. We want you to join in on the jokes. If we didn't we would not have welcomed you here so for the love of god please just tell me what to add to the list for you," Alan lectured. I noticed he was like that, always making sure everyone knew they were cared for. He was genuinely the kindest person I've ever met. Not that it was much of a competition.
"Uhm... I really don't know, maybe just some sports drinks," I was so caught off guard by how blunt he was being. Even though I did believe him I still couldn't breathe as I scrambled for something to request.
"Okay good, you can text me or one of them if you want a particular brand or flavor or if you think of anything else."
I nod before he turns to walk out the door probably to keep asking around.
"And Kenta, I'm proud of you for asking I'm sure that took a lot but that is what we are all here for. We are family here and we really hope that you will see us as such when you are ready," Alan said and slips out of the room with a smile.
Oh-
*1 year later*
Alan pov
It's been a slow day at the garage which to most people would mean calm. People idly doing their work at a comfortable pace in no rush to get a million things done. Not at X-Hunter though, not for me.
Slow day means that means that everyone is running around and being loud. Not for work but just enjoying themselves as they work. I absolutely love these days just my boys without weight on their shoulders just free to have wreckless fun.
Unfortunately today I got to be the central target for any teasing and wrestling. I would absolutely never tell any of them but I kind of enjoy it, they would never let it go.
I had spaced out watching them chase each other around when I suddenly have someone lunge on my back to start wrestling. Of course it was North ever the problem child.
"Why must you do this to me while I was minding my own business," I ask him more of a rhetorical tease than an actual question.
"Because it's fun duh," North retorts as he tries to put me in a headlock.
"Careful old people's bodies are sensitive you don't want him to throw his back out do you," a voice behind me speaks casually.
"Hey I'm not that o-" I start as I turn around. Wait was that Kenta?? He didn't even look up and just continued filling out paperwork but he had a noticeable smile on his face.
The entire garage was quiet from shock. Everyone had turned around to check that they heard it right too. If it wasn't for the smiles across everyone's face they might be mistaken for being upset.
"HOLY SHIT KENTA IM SO PROUD!!"  North shouts as he runs to hug Kenta. Me too.

I thought the SA1 arc was bad with how awful the pacing was, but I think SA2 pissed me off more, even though it has more room to breathe.
I don't know if it's just this translation, but a good chunk of the script is ripped directly from SA2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like...it's the English script. I was always told SA2 was one of the worst translated games in the series, but here's this Japanese anime directly quoting it. There are minor differences here and there, so I don't believe these were lazy subtitles they copied directly from the game script.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But, in the end, it is literally just SA2 but worse.
Amy has no purpose in the story. Even though she goes to rescue Sonic, he just...busts out on his own. Chris takes her moment of convincing Shadow, so she's literally just...there.
This Shadow also doesn't do it for me. He just seems so cold, which yeah is Shadow from SA2, but in X he's content taking the Emeralds from Rouge and leaving her and Chris to die on Prison Island. It takes some calling out to trigger the Maria flashback and make him rescue them. It's not super different from SA2, but in the game, hearing Rouge was in trouble made him struggle with his conscience for a moment and ultimately save her, instead of being like "why should I care if you both die" until Chris starts begging. He seems less like a closed-off mystery and more like an emotionless machine.
Adaptations should do something different, but this is just bastardizing SA2. I don't know if it's because the game was still "new" when this anime came out and they still really liked the original script, but throwing in some of the exact same lines doesn't do it for me. Actually it bothers me because it happens at the wrong place (the faker scene happens in the city when Sonic and Shadow first meet instead of Prison Island) or they just decide to randomly skip a line in the SA2 script (like above in the faker scene, Shadow doesn't say "you're comparing yourself to me?"). Again, I'd just rather play SA2.
The game paced it better, got the mood down better, made me fall in love with Shadow, but I literally couldn't care less about X Shadow like he's fucking cardboard.
Yeah, the Adventure adaptations are not good and I think my opinion of them has just gone down. Though disc 1 is finished, which means I'm half-way through and things will be a little more original from here on out.

It’s been a while since you released that “How DO we fix Sonic?” video. Do you still stand by most of the ideas you presented, or have some of them changed since then?
youtube
A lot of them, yeah. The grading system is something I still grapple with. If there was one element of that video people rejected the most, it was the game pushing too hard for higher scores and faster times.
I think I posted about it before, but I actually wrote out a whole design document years ago that was me trying to solidify ideas from that video while also spitballing how levels should be structured and things like that.
Tumblr media
One of the things written in there is part of trying to soften the game up so much so it's not so reliant on grades and times. Which is to grade you, but make it so grades ultimately don't matter. The hope being that the countdown stresses you out and pushes you to keep up the pace, but if you can't hack it, then you'll eventually realize it doesn't matter and you don't have to worry about it if you don't want to.
Alternatively, maybe just hold the ranking system back entirely until NG+. Because the only people who care about that stuff are replay sickos, right? So just hide it entirely and don't bother people with it until it's obvious they willingly want to engage with it.
youtube
But yeah, like, I bring this up during the Penny's Big Breakaway stream, but either some ideas in that game were directly inspired by me, or it's just a case of great minds think alike. Penny's run button is on a trigger like I was suggesting, and I also had that, like, pole idea where you grab it and spin around. Penny's got a similar take on that idea. (and technically I myself was inspired by Sonic GL)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Penny's even got the combo-based scoring system, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it's not just Penny. Other games have done their own (even more explicit!) takes on my ideas. Some are closer than others, but I can still feel the potential there.
Honestly it makes me mad at myself that I can't actually jump in and experiment with them like the old days.

FANG THE HUNTER: ISSUE #1 - THOUGHTS
Warning: Spoilers Ahead
Tumblr media
Figured since folks seemed to enjoy my StH #68 post so much, I should share my thoughts on Fang's first issue as well.
It'll be a shorter one, since I really don't have as much to say about it.
To put it short... I liked it! I really love Ian Flynn writing these Classic stories. It seems that when IDW Sonic began, Ian Flynn really squeezed himself into the niche of Plot Guy. Even after Evan Stanley took over as Head Writer, it seemed like Ian would jump back in for the big, heavy, climactic events like Issue #50. It's a really nice change of pace to see him writing these more light-hearted, lower-stakes stories, they give him a great opportunity to display the fantastic understanding of the series' character dynamics that made him a prominent figure in the series.
Tumblr media
One particular bit of character work I'm fond of here: Sonic being just a little bit of a jerk!
I'm not the first to bring this up, but nowadays, Sonic has lost a bit of that edge that made him special in the early days. Not Edge in the same sense of, like, Shadow, but the stuff that made Sonic the inventor of the Mascot With Attitude. Nowadays, he's just kind of a smart-talking hero a lot of the time, so I really love stuff like the OK KO crossover taking the opportunity to dial that 90s Attitude up to 11.
Bean gets some solid gags here, too. This was the issue that made me realize how heavily his character writing is inspired by Classic Daffy Duck.
Mauro Fonseca is also doing a fantastic job with art. Their art has been catching my attention lately, they're really good at keeping things on model, but squash-and-stretching those models when needed. I think they're a perfect fit for a Classic miniseries.
The story follows Fang the Hunter, one of the series minor antagonists, and his colleagues Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear, as they hunt a mysterious eighth Chaos Emerald.
Tumblr media
Right away, it seems to me that this is a reference to Sonic Championship (formerly Sonic the Fighters), Bean and Bark's introductory game, which featured eight Emeralds. This left the game in something of a weird position, because Bean and Bark reappearing in later material made Championship canon, but ever since Sonic Adventure, the series' lore has always made it clear that there are only seven Chaos Emeralds. This is a neat little way of addressing that inconsistency!
The comic's setup takes an opportunity smooth over a few other cracks as well.
Tumblr media
In early Sonic games, lore concerning the Chaos Emeralds was kind of all over the place. Some stuff made it seem like each of the different islands the games took place on had their own set of Chaos Emeralds, some had Emeralds with different colors than others, it was clear that they didn't really think to lock down the Chaos Emerald lore until later down the line.
Here, that's attributed to the legendary status of the Chaos Emeralds and their mythological nature.
To me, this is the job of these comics. Telling stories set in the world of the games provides a perfect opportunity to expand upon that world and tell us how the bits of worldbuilding we get in the games all fit together. I will always love when they use the comics to dig into a game concept and give us a better understanding of how it fits in the games' world.
Once again, I'm a big fan of the environments here. The Classic stories always lean into the fantastical element to their settings, with Seasons of Chaos having a full-blown Zone lineup! What we get here is nothing out of the ordinary in that regard, but it's still nice to see the characters run around areas that actually look like places from the games!
That's about all I got! It sets up a sort of B-Plot mystery early on and I was kind of intrigued about where it was gonna go, but the later issue covers have already spoiled it for me so...
I'm excited for more, I really like having a story that centers around a plucky little group of rogues instead of Sonic and his Assigned Pal For This Arc. It's a pretty good start, but nothing enormous and status quo shifting. You know, a Classic Story! It's fun and I'm having fun with it!

Hullo there ! I love your " a father’s embrace " fanfic it got me into metal sonic more so i was wondering if u knew any other fanfics i could read that includes him , I would be very gratful for it ☆
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to also give a look to (shameful self-plug here, apologies) I Can't Take All This and a prompt fill I did for him a while back! Also keep an eager eye out for my Metal Sonic longfic that I'll post. . . eventually.
Without further ado, here's my rec list! I'll sort my recs into four categories: non-ship, Metamy, Metadow and Metonic.
Non-Ship:
The first thing I'll put in this category is actually not a fic, but an official piece of Sonic media. You are now legally obligated to watch the Sonic OVA!! This movie fundamentally changed the way I characterize Metal Sonic forever, and is the basis for at least one fic I'm recommending on this list. 2D animated Sonic is genuinely one of my favorite things on the great green earth, and the OVA has it in spades. If you love the Sonic CD intro, you're gonna love this one. The only drawback is that you have to deal with 90s sexism in some parts, but that's pretty minor.
Now, with that out of the way, let me get on to my actual fic recommendations:
and so I transformed myself with my own hands - by @couch-house. This is THE transfemme Metal Sonic bible right here. But not only that, it features a terrifyingly well-written Eggdad and a great take on Sage. Every scene where Eggman and Metal verbally spar in this one had me on the edge of my seat. The tension and pacing of this one is absolutely fan-fucking-tastic. So don't just read it for trans girl Metal- read it for everything else as well.
Situation: Optimal - by ModOrbot. Metal Sonic battles Sonic and pushes himself to the breaking point- and Eggman gets concerned. Featuring good dad Eggdad and some interesting angst from Metal.
Honorary mention to METACOGNITION - by Chaos Theory (Lizardmind). This one's still ongoing, but I really like this author's narration for Metal so far, and the alternate universe premise they're building is fascinating to watch as it unfolds.
Metamy:
Carbon Cafe - by @metallix-mixin. A post-redemption Metal waxes poetic about the bakery he now runs, and the lovely guest who visits him there. A short and sweet story with a charmingly verbose and romantic narration style for Metal that I haven't found anywhere else. I think about this fic whenever I pass a bakery.
Bird Calls - by Fumiku. Metal stumbles across Amy while she's bird-watching. This one's simply the best Metamy I've ever read. Period. GOD I love this one. Most of the time, I simply tolerate Metamy to get more content with Metal Sonic in it, but this fic makes me believe in love. The emotions that both Metal and Amy go through in this one are just so in-character, and are so, so good.
Beauty is in the Beholder - by Fumiku. This is the only fic I've ever found that's about Metamy after the introduction to their relationship. In this one, they've been dating for a while now, but Metal's been having some issues with mental health and body image. Good thing Amy's there to help :)
Metadow:
Mutually Beneficial, Whatever It Takes, and A Form Chosen By Himself, But Not For Himself - by @south-sea here on tumblr. In fact, you really should just check out everything Sea has ever written for their Second Chance AU that they have starring Shadow and Metal. They write Shadow and Metal in a queer-platonic relationship and their writing is honestly what sold me on the relationship in the first place. Everything they touch with these two characters is solid gold. The narration style they use for Metal is brutally effective. I can't recommend those fics highly enough.
Metonic:
Halves of the Same Coin - by @sunnimint. OVA Universe. This fic is MANDATORY READING once you've seen the OVA. This fic dragged me from the highest fluffy happiness to the most gut-wrenching of angst. This fic destroyed me. This fic remade me. And this fic just got its concluding chapter. It's the perfect time to read it.
Iron Oxide - by TheEnigmaMachine. This is the other mandatory reading for Metonic, this time set roughly in gameverse. This fic is fascinating because it's actually a high-concept science fiction novel neatly disguised as a ship fic. This one's a pleasure to read because Metal actually narrates in and utilizes actual computer and science terms (the tags for "quantum mechanics" and "physics" aren't kidding!) It genuinely blew my mind when I first read it. Don't let the weird premise scare you- roll with the angst, bunker down for the enemies-to-lovers slow burn, and give it a shot.
Beginnings of an End - by @sunnimint. If any of you were crying because you don't want to watch the OVA but still wanted to read Sunnimint's absolutely phenomenal prose, look no further- she's got one in gameverse too. This one, opposite of her other one, features a Metal raised by a good dad Eggman, and all of the baggage that comes with it going into a Metonic relationship. It's a fascinating read. The only problem is that it's unfinished, but what's there is solid gold.

Okay, I was able to rewatch the premiere episode again. I promise that I won’t post spoilers.
The show went in the direction that I thought it would, but it was good. I don’t think that it needed to be 40 minutes, but it was cute. The pacing is a bit odd in the first ten minutes, but it corrected itself as soon as we get to the Alternative Universe (New Yoke). The ending was just meh. It is a definite cliffhanger.
Phenomenal animation and soundtrack! The cartoon-rubber hose animation works in 3D. Lots of Easter eggs. Lots. Some cute and charming visuals, others are vocal. Puns are definitely cheesy, but some are clever. I like the visual Easter eggs more than the spoken nods to previous Sonic games.
The voice acting was great! Deven nails it as Sonic! You can hear how much he loves this character and wants to do right. He sounds like Sonic! My only criticism with this Sonic is that he’s a bit of an airhead. However, that’s meant to be part of the show. Brian kills it as Eggman! He did a great job as Knuckles in the Underground series, but he owns it as Eggman. Anti-Tails/Nine… buddy. I love you. Rouge actually sounds pretty cool! She was the one that I was the most worried about. Amy/Rusty Rose’s VA is good actor, but not what I picture for AmyRose’s voice. Same with Knuckles. Shadow does make a slight appearance, some lines are spoken. I definitely need to hear more lines from him to form an opinion.
Overall, I loved this more than the Sonic Boom show. It ranks up there with the movies for me. I definitely think that I need to see a few more episodes. It’s exactly what I thought it would be… and that’s okay. I liked it! I thought it was pretty good! I give it an 8/10!

[Image ID: a digital drawing of an alternate universe version of Blaze the Cat, from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Behind her is a strange, almost angelic creature, glowing with fiery light. Despite the digital medium, the colors and shading have a blotchy, paper-y texture to them. Everything is cast in a fiery red-orange hue.
Blaze is poised in the air as if mid-jump. She has one leg extended and the other bent beneath her. Her hands are balled into fists and surrounded by fire. She looks to the side with a scowl, fangs showing. Her long tail curls around and under her like a live thing. Six red triangles underscore her eyes. On her forehead is an oval red jewel. It is cracked, like a bite has been taken out of its top right.
For her outfit, Blaze's top resembles her canon design, purple with long sleeves, white cuffs, and a gold necklace. Rather than her usual white leggings, however, she instead wears white pants with a slit down the side, allowing them to flap loosely around her ankles. A gold crown-like band ties her feathery hair back in a ponytail, and a red sash is tied around her waist. White feathers are on her ankles, and her feet are white, bird-like talons with dustings of purple scales.
Behind Blaze is Solaris, a being with a body plan similar to Blaze's but alien, statuesque features. Cracks mark her edges, as if she is made of stone. She is primarily a pale yellow-white, like sandstone, gradating to a dark red at the ends of her limbs and tip of her tail. In the center of her chest is an empty hole, shaped like an emerald. It is pale blue. Her head is smooth and bird-like. Her "eyes" are large, angular slits of pure ruby. Three slits of blue lie under each eye, like tear drops. On her forehead is a mark like a gem split in half. The left half is pale red, the right half the same color as her eyes.
Her limbs are slender and tapering. Her hands have three claws each. Her legs end in sharp points, with no feet. Her tail is long and jagged, ending in a spade-like point. Seven red shards fan out from its tip, not connected to the tail by any physical tissue. In the same fashion, six long shards fan from her arms like feathers, and ten rays arc out from the halo-like horns on her head. Between their tips floats an oval jewel, cracked the same as Blaze's. The left side is faded red; the smaller right fragment is rich ruby.
Solaris's pose mirrors Blaze's, making it appear as if her halo and wings are Blaze's. Solaris's left claws rest on Blaze's shoulder, while her right hand cups Blaze's own. /end ID]
some fresh art for my old Rush of Flame AU, a Blaze-centric AU with lots of Rush inspiration, an almost entirely original setting, overly elaborate worldbuilding, a dash of Sonaze, for flavor. Blaze's design hasn't changed much, more the way I rendered it. Solaris's design has changed quite a bit. I wanted to make her like more inhuman, and I think it turned out really well. better look at each of them below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image ID: the same two characters from above, but now separated into their own individual drawings, allowing a clearer look at their designs. /end ID]
as for why I drew this now, when I haven't touched this AU in at least a year... well, I was going to do an AU August Challenge, but I immediately fell badly off schedule. very badly. and so I decided that rather than go through the same struggle I did with my extremely ill-fated OCtober last year, I wouldn't try and scramble to finish the challenge but just. draw. at my own pace. when I felt like it.
no checklist. no self-imposed challenge or time limit. just drawing what I felt like, when I felt like it, and taking the time to make something I'm actually happy with rather than rushing to make something "finished". it's a novel concept and frankly? unnerving. what is this. don't like it. take me back to planners and to-do lists where I belong. /lh

Sometimes I have random plot thoughts on stories that I like reading or am writing and I just wanna talk about a few that keep squirming around in my mind.
Tachophobia AU: Random Idea... In an attempt to stop his friends from reverting Niko back to Sonic, Starline secretly takes them into the facility and starts manipulating them in similar but also different ways. They could interact if he wanted, but it'd be a "Psych Ward" situation.
Imprisonment/Cybernetic AU: I have done a lot of messed up shit to characters before, and this isn't any different. Just look at my Cybernetic AU because jeez Issue 4 went hard on Sonic's trauma. It was actually my favorite to write and draw. I also got all of the work done in FOUR DAYS. (strange record. Was going to see a friend soon and I cranked out 11 pages and finished right before midnight the day before)
I actually wing a ton of my writing, and many plots don't get off the ground unfortunately because of it. So to shoutout some of those abandoned comics... "Not So Different" (A short mini between Canon!Shadow and Cybernetic!Sonic bc I noticed how similar they were), that one mlp x sonic pony comic I only got one page done for and don't have a name for, another mlp x sonic crossover comic featuring the Paradox Prism I only got to the cover art for, and that Imprisonment AU comic I completely forgot about and... Unfortunately abandoned but idk might come back to it.
Shadow Prime AU: I've always wanted to make a comic adaptation of the fic, and I might come around to it eventually once I decide what I wanna do. The main issue is the art style... Do I want it fully colored, black and white, or selective coloring? Not too sure but I'm kinda leaning on fully colored. But I still gotta finish Cybernetic but it's on hiatus due to burnout.
Sonic Cybernetic AU: I've actually wished for a game adaptation of the comic. Or at least... Working models people could use for other games to add them. I just think that'd be neat, but I can't code or model for anything.
Sometimes I accidentally enforce personal headcanons or personal experience to my writing... This happened recently with the "Rollercoaster" fic from the Tachophobia AU (reminder: I just like it. I did not create it. That belongs to @boom-fanfic-a-latta and @the-sky-queen.) Because I unintentionally drew from my own experiences from an amusement park. Although they were exaggerated a bit, they're still oddly close to my original memories. When I was younger, I liked going to the County Fair, and for the longest time I hated fast rides. I'd always panic on them, and my favorite ride was this caterpillar one (it was also slow paced and kinda bumpy). And Niko's experience, albeit shifted to be more like his character, was exactly how I felt on my first fast ride... Absolutely fucking terrified. I also sometimes have a nervous stammer and suffer from anxiety issues, so... I might've unintentionally written Niko to feel similarly to me at amusement parks when I was younger.
Anyway, just some random stuff, wanted to info-dump too. Cool? Okay, bye!

So do you think the reason frontiers is the way it is, is because sonic team pandered to the fandom? The guys that hate sonic for what it is, and want it to become something it’s not. If so it’s horrifying to think that sonic team now are listening to the “fans” that don’t even have a basic fucking understanding of sonic. At this point the franchise is screwed if they are now listening to the guys that hate it.
I would say it's a complicated affair, but one that can also be summed up as textbook damage control. That and a dash of chasing trends.
Considering that Frontiers is a game that feels uncomfortable with its Sonic game skin - more than arguably any game in the series before it, even ShtH - I believe that SEGA/Sonic Team probably had sincere intentions, but took criticisms of past games to heart a bit too much... which is nothing new with them, hence my assumption.
In this day and age, where the contempt for the Pontaff games has grown at an all time high, with loud fans and louder YouTubers regularly saying with a straight face that Colours/Forces is worse than '06, that Eggman being the final boss and main villain is itself the problem somehow, that pandering is bad unless it's pandering to them... it's easy to sense them going in panic mode and whipping out something as Not-Pontaff as possible. And hey, it heavily resembles a certain popular Nintendo game, so easy points, right? (Ignoring that aping Nintendo was seen as a negative with Lost World...)
Alas, in their efforts to make up for perceived sins, they went too far in the other direction. Now, everything is lifeless and muddy. Now, the presence of Sonic characters and random floating grind rails are the only physical indication you have that it is indeed a Sonic game. Now, there's an air of self-importance that manifests through downplaying events of past games in order to prop up its own use of the cast. Now, the universe can't even recall said past events accurately. Now, everyone sounds as though the actors themselves are depressed as opposed to them giving a legit somber performance as their characters. Now, cutscenes are plodding in their pacing, and the characters stand around doing nothing of worth in a good number of them to a greater extent than the previous games. And most ironically of all, for all its attempts to distance itself from the inaccurately titled "Meta Era", it ultimately proved to be ten times more meta than ANY of the Pontaff games. Because it helps to know what meta actually means.
And all of that comes without mentioning the elephant in the room: attaching Flynn's name to the game. Followed by attaching his name to almost fucking everything after.
Fans can tell me as many times as they want that Frontiers is bold and proud, and I'm sure the praise it's received by people who coincidentally hate Sonic is stroking that ego. But regardless of one's opinion on the game's quality, or the story's quality, all I see is an admittance of defeat. I see something that was made by people who are tired and confused.
I don't think it's ruined all chances of me liking or showing interest in anything that comes after, seeing how I'm still excited for Superstars. In fact, I'm not even necessarily opposed to the mere concept of an open world Sonic. But if future games continue with the Frontiers formula... if the open world continues to be executed like this... if the world continues to be grey and have little-to-no aesthetic... if I'm forced to see Sage and her relationship with a villain who never needed a Bowser Jr. get shoehorned everywhere as much as Flynn himself... I'll be waiting for when they inevitably change course once again.
