I noticed there are not many remarks about Chu Ci of the Lantern and Po Yun written by Huai Shang, so I wanted to leave this for him.
While re-reading Po Yun I was reminded of Chu Ci's story (Lantern: Behold the Bayonet) and how I thought the ending was happy.
I weirdly feel guilty.
Rethinking it, it's rather sad and frightening that Chu Ci ended up with Han Yue. No matter how the author spins a bow with a happy wrapper, the ending was rather chilling.
I get that this abuser to lover and this disturbingly performed (I'm a better man now) is a common setting, and the author was probably trying to cater in that direction, but I don't think any of the novels of the same trope frightened me like Behold the Bayonet did.
Some say Han Yue detained, mentally and physically abused and raped Chu Ci because he truly loved him. Just his default love setting is violent
And that Chu Ci did not kill Han Yue because he at some point had come to have feelings for him.
No, I think Han Yue lived only because of Chu Ci's moral compass. He believed Han Yue didn't deserve death. And by the time Chu Ci chopped up the elder Han son as retribution to what happened to his family, there had already been a significant deterioration to his sanity.
He was suicidal, a mess of guilt, regret, conflicting with the satisfaction of literally dicing the older asshole and the dissatisfaction of not being able to do more triggering the guilt of having used his father's sacred teachings for something like this.
What's even painful is how we see that Chu Ci is alone, and how several times throughout the story we see characters imply or even directly say 'Just give in. You're actually lucky... Or you don't know how lucky you are.'
The author's attempt at making Han Yue decent by the end and showing Chu Ci live well is frightening, because by the end of it all I am questioning is if he is indeed happy or if the continuous dismissal of his plight, the overwhelming degree of disregard shown by the people around him when Han Yue abuses him has finally buckled him mentally.
I don't think anyone in the story has truly told him this genuinely caring for his wellbeing. So I am leaving this...
Chu Ci, you deserve better. You of all people truly deserve the best.
Everyone in this world deserves way better than someone like Han Yue.
