I figured I'd repost that list of other animation creators on YouTube that I shared last week, separate from it's original, weird context. I've also included several more entries based on suggestions in the comments. Thanks for the feedback! General Content Warning: Some of the below is not for kids, or contains violence or other subject matter some viewers might find distressing. Please use your adult discretion. Also, this is not a list of moral endorsements. I know some of these creators personally, but many of them I do not. While I have tried to make sure I'm not listing anyone who is a criminal or otherwise objectively harmful person, I don't have encyclopedic knowledge of every little internet drama that has gone down (and chances are I'm not super interested in hearing about it all because it's really difficult to tell fact from fiction from hyperbole around here).

An Alternative to the Studio System?: Indie Animation Forges Ahead [Part 4]

A few other indie animations are worth noting. Take for example, a comedy sci-fi music series named Starstruck, surrealist cyberpunk anime named Dreamcatchers, and an animated young adult horror mystery named Black Pines. There's artist and animator Tamara's Starmakers series (with a bisexual girl named Astra), and storyboarder Kaitrin Snodgrass's seeming space opera, Buckwild.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann blog, and Wayback Machine. This was the eleventh article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on July 15, 2022.

There's also a young adult action-adventure fantasy film named The Will of Monsters, by filmmaker and animator Christopher Wade, an animated project named Big Cat Bandits, and about globe-traveling cat thieves "resisting an evil world-conquering empire with crime". It was exciting to learn about 2D freelance animator Nadia Dar's series based on growing up mixed race entitled Brighter, and an animated series named Ironface "steeped in 80s pop culture...part Terminator, and all NIGHTMARE" according to the show's teaser. Others are just as intriguing, such as an action-comedy named Defender Squad about an alien woman who crash lands on Earth and "joins a low ranking two-person hero team" according to series creator Royal Wildfire.

These series, and many others, [11] are examples of creating animation without connections to big companies. These creators aren't on "puppet strings". Unlike series produced made by big companies, indie animations obviously depend on people's support, due to lack of support from the industry unsurprisingly. The indie animations are often shared by their creators, following the basic marketing advice some shared about small indie creative projects. Still, it is worth remembering, as The Owl House creator and bisexual animator Dana Terrace once pointed out, "nothing is precious in animation."

This makes me think about a Russian indie series about a family of Metalheads entitled Metal Family. It seems to have stopped for the time being. Western sanctions on Russia limited financial options available to Russians. They resulted in challenges for the show's staff in getting money necessary for the show's continuation. From comments on the Metal Family subreddit, I get the impression that the series is a rut now and won't be coming out anytime soon. Presumably work on episodes is going forward, but slowly. My enthusiasm for the series dissipated after a character used an anti-gay slur unnecessarily and no one attempted to improve the dialogue.

On a more positive note, there are are creators such as a 2D Thai animator named KAGO, and an indie feature animation director, Fnook. Indie animation studios Cloudrise Pictures, Paper Panther, Tapocketa, Krispy Animation, and Bandit Mill are producing animations. The latter is working to create "unique, different adult animation" such as The Boys of Boxtown. Bitter Animation is making a pilot named Stranger and many other animations. The indie animated studio, Sunflower Club, is going forward with Little Wolf and Life in Hell.

There are many other series in the works. This includes DynamoToon's sci-fi fantasy comedy named Horizonauts. There's also a queer Colombian-American 2D artist and animator named TipsyJHearts creating a series entitled The Evil Little Thing, and an animated series named The Porcelain Prince by Gabrielle Teaford. Also of note is an unnamed sci-fi crime drama "heavily inspired by Avatar and RWBY" by Keelan270, and Animation Emfatuation's Crime!, a short film in the process about knightlights and teddy bears which fight monsters at night entitled Knightlights & Teddy Bears. 

It is worth pointing to a 2D-animated cartoon with slapstick and adventure entitled The Incredible Adventures of Detective Cat, an independent drama named GrindCove, Angye Burman's Real Fantasy: Fight for the Past which focuses on four teens who try to figure out their future while "fighting off evil...and struggling with school". Then there's a series by an animator, Shorter, named Gangs for Rent. It is an animated sitcom about gangsters, with LGBTQ people, those on the spectrum, and with mental disorders.

There are many other indie animated series out there, [12] some of which aren't in this article despite my best efforts to find as many series as I could. Cartoon Crave promotes some of these series on Twitter. Supporting indie animation is important to provide a viable alternative to often stifling studio system which ingests shows and spits them out. Likely the indie animation boom will continue as companies continue to cut animators and cancel shows.

West Slope Startup Week Starts Monday July 11 Pagosa Daily Post News Events & Video for Pagosa Springs Colorado

West Slope Startup Week brings together hundreds of regional entrepreneurs to learn, teach, and mentor each other. Events include the Greater Colorado Pitch Series, Celebration Party, Keynote Address, and more. This is the first year that the event will offer an entire five days of virtual programming, allowing audience members in rural Colorado to join from wherever they are. Four days of in-person programming will take place Tuesday July 12 through Friday July 15 in downtown Grand Junction. i continue to stand by my slightly/very ridiculous writing process bc as someone who comes up w ideas fast and writes slow, it's the best thing that's worked for me!

but i stand especially stand by the advice that you're allowed to cannibalize words and lines and paragraphs from one fic and use it in another!!

it's an absolute game-changer it's allowed me to use lines that (i think) are beautiful and give them a home bc they deserve them to be seen!!!

I hope you know that literally nobody is going to be able to live up to the standard you, V*v, and Glitch have set and your arrogance and exploitation of your fanbase and connections has screwed millions of creatives out of their dreams because Hollywood is a joke that isn't worth telling and wealthy e-celebs like yourself have claimed the indie scene all to yourselves and moved the goalposts into the stratosphere.

Nope. This isn't a zero sum game. There is not some limited, prescribed number of indie trophy slots that a few studios greedily filled up, blocking everyone else out. That is not how it works. Nothing any other creator is doing - short of personally sending hired goons to your doorstep or stealing your credit cards - is taking anything away from you or preventing your success. In fact if an indie creator can manage to demonstrate that they've got something viable going, it may help to map out a pathway for others.

I think I'm not going to bother trying to address whether or not cartoons in return for support from fans - an entirely voluntary exchange - constitutes exploitation. And I'm living in the Midwest driving a 2007 economy car with 200k+ miles on it, but let's just skip past the assumptions that I'm wealthy and connected too.

Instead, let's get to the weirdly myopic notion that the indie scene is held captive by three studios. Maybe YouTube algorithms or Twitter bubbles are somewhat to blame, but in actuality there are so, so many individual people, friend groups, and small production houses out there making independent animation, I cannot possibly name them all.

By no means a full list. That's just YouTube, and mostly just English language stuff, and I didn't even get to the multitudes of Warrior Cats animation collabs.

The point is, the indie landscape is vast and populated by creators new and old, making all kinds of animated media from skits, to shows, to ARGs, to films. Audience sizes vary as much as the content, stylistic approaches, subject matter, and budgets do. There are no compliance standards, no gateways to entry, no goalposts. There's not even any preset definition of success except what you decide for yourself.

Anyway, instead of nurturing your resentments, consider making something. I assure you, it's a far more rewarding use of your time and energy, and pretty much no one can stop you. ------------- EDIT- Made some additions to the list based on comments. Thanks!

Okay so, I've recently found this series that's available for free on youtube right now called, Esluna the First Monolith (Check it out!!!!!) by cloudrise pictures

It has serious ghibli and avatar the last airbender vibes and some of the later episodes have less than 1k views???? which is wild because it ends really beautifully!!!!!

And it was operantly all animated by ONE GUY??!?!? 

I've put together are some of my favorite shots from the series, which totals around like an hour and fifteen minutes, definitely give it a chance if you're looking for something to watch!!! also there's a movie on the way :0 so that's hype!!

I just realized that I haven’t done a character explanation here in a while and I kinda want to submit another! This time I’ll be using Cedarstar.

Alright let’s take a look!

Cedar was born in the rogue colony that her and her sisters, Lake and Hollow were born in. While there, she was favored by her father for her bravery in battle, even as a young kit. When Lake and Hollow left, she chased them down to persuade them to stay with her to no avail. She was especially sad when Jay, the tracker, caught Hollow and presented her body to the colony. Her father, Perch, was angered by the other kits’ betrayal and forced Cedar to choose between him and her pacifist mother, Frost. He won over his daughter by revealing that the scar on his chest came from her mother.

Wow thats a lot to happen in a young age! I am curious about Frost and why she gave him that scar, he seems to be pretty manipulative so I assume its cause he was sketchy to her?

While Lakefur was in the clans, she (Im assuming Cedar?) was among the group who met with her (Lakefur?) to possibly take over the colony. When Lakefur was exiled from her clan for treachery, their team attacked the colony and she joined the journey to start a new clan called Harmonyclan as Cedarcloud. Perch convinced her to take down the clan while in it. Her father also forbade a mate and kits, since in the colony, a she-cat wasn’t allowed to fight after her first litter.

I think I understand the gist of this, although with Lakefur and Cedarcloud discussed Im a bit confused as to who is being referenced. Im guessing Lakefur was originally in a clan and then exiled, and Cedar also joined that clan to take it down from the inside. As for why a she-cat isnt allowed to fight after their first litter in the colony, why is that? I would think that unless it is a controlling tactic to encourage females not to have kittens, to deprive the colony of fighters (especially young strong ones) would be unwise.  

Despite this, she fell in love with a barn cat named Noodle. Perch learned of her pregnancy and forced her to push Noodle in front of a monster. She later had Flintkit and Applekit and was told by their grandfather that if she didn’t kill them, he would. When the kits turned 4 moons, she took them into the forest and attempted to kill them, fearing Perch. Applekit died, while Flintkit lives with a blind eye and multiple scars. He proclaimed that Cedarcloud was the one who did it. She was then exiled from Harmonyclan. She tried to take Flintkit, but he refused to follow.

Ah so her father followed her to Harmonyclan? Was he the de facto leader of that clan then? Sorry Im a bit confused. 

She went back to her colony and killed the leader in his den. In their culture, leadership is inherited or won. She led them back to the clan and set camp across the river from Harmonyclan. War was waged and she caused many deaths for Harmonyclan’s already scarce warriors, especially with her new daughter with Lakefur’s ex-mate, Wave. Since she is leader, she can take a mate, but she did it against poor judgment, knowing he’s a player. Stone, their daughter, was very fierce and mean, like how her mother was supposed to be.

Lakestar slowly began to slip into madness as the fighting never stopped from her own sister. One day, she agrees to meet her at the border bridge. Lakestar lunged at Cedar, but out of reflex, Cedar kills Lakestar by slamming her into the ground by her chest. She drags her body back to Harmonyclan and formally apologizes for everything she’s done. She makes friends with her niece and step-daughter, Cloudrise again after wounding her when she stayed with the colony for a while. Flinteye still hates his mom tho. Cedar renames her colony to Cedarclan and agrees to get her nine lives with Scarnose, their deputy, the next night. She also gives a vow to forever sheath her claws.

Wait so Lakestar was the leader of Harmonyclan? I thought she was exiled from the clan? Why was her mate in the colony? 

When there, the blind son of Aquaclaw, Fuzzystorm, is there instead. He explains that Scarnose mysteriously passed in the night and an omen was left for him to lead. When they attempt to receive their lives, the judges (the three who control the afterlife) reveal to her that Fuzzystorm killed Scarnose and the sign was faked by Flinteye, her son and his mate. They do not think he deserves his power, so they give him 5 fake lives and only 5 real lives to Cedarstar. If he loses a life, it will go to her.

Fuzzystar proves to be a poor and cruel leader, crippling his brother, Marinepelt, in order to steal his mate, Wildflower (much to Flinteyes annoyance) and killing Aquaclaw for standing up to her sons tyranny. Cedarstar meets with Marinepelt, Wildflower, Cloudrise, Starfall (Cloudrise’s bro), Redfang (the med cat of Strikeclan (that’s Harmonyclan btw) and Aquaclaws daughter), and Floodwing (another Aqua kit). They hatch a plan to have Wildflower pretend to be Fuzzystar’s mate, Marinepelt will stay in Cedarclan, Redfang, Cloudrise, and Starfall will become close advisors to Fuzzystar and Flinteye, and Floodwing and Cloudrise will help communicate. After a while, Wildflower finally sneaks back to Cedarclan and gives birth to Marinepelt’s kits. An enraged Fuzzystar finds out and tries to take them with Cloudrise and Flinteye, but Cloudrise warns them and they are unsuccessful.

They finally agree to battle Strikeclan, but before they do, Perch and Wave protest. They think that Fuzzystar is a good leader and should be left alone. Wave attacks her and in desperation, kills her mate. She is upset enough by the battle, but now she has killed another close to her. She powers through the horror and continues the battle with the plan that Starfall and Cloudrise will corner Flinteye and Windypelt (a close senior warrior to them, who ironically was Scarnoses mate) while Redfang leads Fuzzystar to “safety” by the river and drowns him with Marinepelt. During the battle, before he can be reached, Flinteye pins Cedarstar and criticizes her horrible parenting. She acknowledges him and apologizes for her actions once more, explaining what happened, but he still hates her. While he runs off to fight Starfall and Cloudrise, she is struck with all the death and trauma she has caused through the moons.

After the battle, Marinepelt is made leader instead of Flinteye, who apologizes for going with Fuzzystar, as soon after attacking his mother, he got a vision from Applekit denying him of approval. Windypelt is banished and Cedarstar goes back to her life. She has frequent nightmares about her actions and feels like she’s not meant to lead, but she makes good friends with Marigold, Waves other ex-mate.

Honestly I think allegiances would be helpful, I feel like this is less a discussion about Cedarclaw’s story and more an overview of several different stories here, and without more context I am hopelessly lost. I can see you have a lot planned though, which is great! Maybe you could break it uo into smaller sections and go into more detail about each one?
