Emily: A Poem

This poem is inspired by Hazbin Hotel and written from Emily's point of view. I was attempting to mimic the style of a psalm, which is why Emily addresses Sera as "Mother" throughout. Let me know what you think!

How long, O Mother,

will you hide your face from me? 

How long must I cry

before you answer? 

My fists pound at your door

and you do not come out;

my feet kick against the chains

and you have no pity;

my throat is sore from screaming,

but you must have lost your hearing. 

What kind of mother,

when her daughter asks for a blanket,

would give her a whip? 

Or, when she asks for food,

would give her a slap? 

Or, when she asks a question,

would rain down curses? 

I am scorned by my brothers and sisters

because of my questions;

because I dared to ask for more

they have left me with less. 

I have been disgraced among my kind;

I am no higher than the succubi. 

The angels who should have attended me

have all abandoned me. 

The demons are my closest friends. 

Why do you shut your eyes

to their pleading faces? 

Why do you cover your ears

when they say they’ve changed? 

Just as heavy snowfall

completely hides the grass,

so a right-seeking heart

can cover a multitude of sins. 

But with the flames of accusation,

the snow can all too easily

for a Princess of Hell

that the so-called villain

We who are Heaven-born

always shining our lights into the darkness.

Marika Hackman — Big Sigh (Chrysalis)

Marika Hackman’s “No Caffeine” is a cool temperature frenzy, stylish and poised and clinging to a ledge by its fingernails. The artist sings with a clean, uninflected purity about COVID lockdown induced psychosis, her voice a balm but the lyrics anything but soothing. “Occupy your mind, don't stay home/Talk to all your friends, but don't look at your phone/Scream into a bag, try to turn your brain off/ Make an herbal tea, don't throw up,” she chants, serene despite the agitated pulse of bass, the skittery angst of snare that push the song forward. It’s close to diva pop, especially in the chorus, but of a particularly unhinged variety. The slick of pop, the raw of self-immolation sit right next to each other in a fascinating bipolar opposition.

As the single intimates, Marika Hackman had a rough time in the early 2020s and is just now making her way back. The artist was on a roll in 2020, hot off the release of her breakout Any Human Friend and finished with a tour (the last date was March 5, 2020, just before the lockdown started). But like many artists, she found the combination of anxiety, isolation and tedium anathema to creative progress. She couldn’t write for months. A covers album, with stripped down, drum-machine, acoustic guitar and keyboard versions of Radiohead, Elliott Smith, the Shins and Grimes songs, served as a reset, and now comes Big Sigh. It’s a very good set of songs, sleek and wrenching at the same time.

I like the wobbling uncertainty of the guitar riff on the title track, an off-balance lick that reminds me faintly of Nirvana. Like Cobain & Co., Hackman has a way of careening from skin-flaying self-scrutiny to raging pop choruses, though she cloaks both extremes in a chilled, premeditated prettiness. “Hanging” though nearly whispered and couched in introspective piano chords, puts a luminous coating on dysfunction and disease. The verse fairly shimmers, but the imagery in it is brutal. Croons Hackman, “I'm going home to intubate/'Cause every time we talk I suffocate/Remember when you said I'm a disease/And how you'd like to kill me in your dreams.”

You can trace Hackman’s lineage through a lengthy list of songwriters who have made art out of women’s suffering — Fiona Apple and Courtney Love, come to mind, but also Sinead O'Connor — but that doesn’t lessen the pull of Big Sigh. Here’s an artist who’s been through the fire and came out different, damaged and beautiful.

Huskerdust Fankid Idea

I don't know if Hazbin Hotel fankids are still a thing, but I came up with an Idea for a Huskerdust daughter.

Angel Dust and Husk's kid is named Chrissy. When anyone asks what Chrissy is short for, they'll get a different answer depending on which dad they ask. 

If they ask Angel, he'll say it's short for Chrysalis, named after her daddy.

If they ask Husk, he'll say it's short for Crystal, to keep in the theme of her papa's and auntie’s names.

When Chrissy/Chris is older, she asks what their real answer is, and Husk and Angel tell her they never actually had it be short for something. They thought it was a nice name that had the potential to be a nickname for whatever Chrissy wanted her longer name to be if she wanted one later on. 

Also, if she ever signed a contract with a sketchy demon, she could fuck around with them by signing a fake full name and possibly get out scot-free. Both dads thought this was something worth supporting since both are familiar with just how much it blows to be under contract to some asshole.

Chris often claims her name is short for Christina when she’s older, but once when an overlord was pressuring her into signing a contract (for a soul or something else that needed a signature), she signed it “Chrysanthemum” and was already halfway across the Pentagram before the overlord realized the contract wasn’t binding. Angel and Husk couldn’t be prouder.

some random worldbuilding stuff for my fish boi au :3

i was thinking about like life cycle sort of stuff? idk. baby mer's are pretty similar as they haven't developed their specific tail type. a baby mer has a slightly stubby almost tadpole like tail. it is usually one color. they just wiggle around. :3 also they bald. no head fins or crests yet.

when a mer is 10 they start showing faint signs of traits they will have when they get older. such as emerging pattering, slight changes in fin shape, and a change in the scales but nothing too noticeable.

around the time they turn 12 they make a sort of cocoon/chrysalis? thing. it looks kind of like a giant pearl but more smooshed looking?

like a water droplet. it's also semi transparent but only enough to see a shadow of the mer inside. They stay inside for about a week before poping out with their new unique tail and head fins/crests/horns :3

they still aren't full sized and usually reach their maximum length once they turn 18.

now what happens to a mer when they die? they don't turn to dust but i have a different idea. what does happen is that the ocean rapidly reclaims their bodies. and i mean FAST. then coral, sea plants, and other things seemingly appear overnight turning the now mer shaped sand and rock into an underwater garden.

family members and friends will often maintain these gardens and decorate them with shells and other nice things they find or that the dead mer liked.

the horrors growing up and realising that life sucks but also realising that at the end of the day there are things and people that make it worth the suckiness

The chrysalis cracks, not with a bang, but with a dull ache, a slow, agonizing peel. we emerge, blinking, into a world that seems less vibrant, the colors dulled by a film of experience. There is loss of luminescence of once there stood my childhood's illusions, like fireflies, fleeting , hoovering, their magic replaced by the humdrum of responsibility, the gnawing awareness of ticking clocks. the ache of understanding, time's arrow neither stands still nor reverses. It merely marches forward.

It settles upon us, slowly at first, a dust that gathers in the corners of your laughter. The stories you wove, vibrant tapestries of dragons and heroes, begin to fray at the edges. The adults, once giants walking in legend, shrink, their faces etched with lines that speak of battles fought and lost. A disillusionment, cold and metallic, seeps into your bones.

Life, you discover, is not a heroic ballad. It is a symphony of discordant notes, a relentless march towards an unknown horizon. There are days that steal the color from the sky, days that leave you breathless with a bone-deep weariness. The realization claws at you – the world is not built for happily ever afters.

But then, dear soul, in the quietude of twilight, a hand reaches out, warm and calloused. A familiar voice, weathered but full of love, cuts through the din. Her words peeking of sunlight, a name that reflects the hues of horizon.

In the crinkled corners of a loved one's smile, you see a reflection of a world not yet extinguished. A shared joke, a whispered secret, a simple act of kindness – these become the embers that rekindle the spark within you.

Perhaps the world is not a place of sunshine and rainbows. But in the flickering lamplight, in the shared laughter that breaks through the tears, you discover a different kind of magic. Bodega — Our Brand Could Be Yr Life (Chrysalis)

“Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it be the only exception to the universal law.” Bodega rips from an unusual angle, one that incorporates Kant’s Categorical Imperative as easily as marketing gobble-de-gook, neither of them slowing down a maniacally taut post-punk racket.

The band’s 2018 debut, Endless Scroll, made my 2018 “best-of” where I wrote “Its tight, nervy, jangles wrap around themes of internet-age dislocation and movie references. Smart, sarcastic, ironic, sharp, Bodega bristles with what you want from a garage punk band but reveals a surprisingly soft heart.” The soft heart is no longer in evidence, but everything else still applies.

Back then Bodega recorded for the excellent punk upstart Upset The Rupture. These days they’re working for Chrysalis. Yet the riffs still wind up tight, the lyrics still bite down hard. Whip smart and pissed about it, Bodega looks on contemporary Brooklyn with withering sarcasm. No fewer than three cuts explore whether cool can be purchased, and if so, at what cost. The “Cultural Consumer” triad makes up the kicking, self-searching heart of this album. Number one lurches dreamily among the inherited wealth intellectuals, eyeing a “Post-grad, walking down the aisle, card swipe and he’s stacking up his pile/He spends all his family’s money reading tomes on the fall of Rome.” Number two considers the humiliating consequences of not knowing things (“Can’t believe in the fact that you’ve never even heard about that.”) While 3 is agitated and jangly, working itself into a joyful frenzy over the prospect of acquiring brainy cred. The message: No time for sex or drugs or rock and roll. There are 10,000 books and plays you must read before you die. Time to get cracking.

As in the past, Bodega ringmaster Ben Hozie sings—or rather rants—most of the vocals, but Nikki Belfiglio makes some memorable contributions (on Endless Scroll her “Gyrate” about feminine pleasure, was an album highlight). She takes the lead in “G.N.D. Deity,” cooing and yowling and turning a wireframe beat into something approaching a punk anthem. And it wouldn’t be a Bodega record without a cinematic reference or two; the band that once proclaimed “I am not a cinephile…motherfucker” here includes a lyrical slow-strummed daydream called “Tarkovski.”

In short, the observations are sharp and the music cranks. Twenty-first century Brooklyn doesn’t sound like much fun, but Bodega does.

Chrysalis Gown

I think this first appears in Episode 14. It's in-between some scenes with the Honey-coloured gown, during the early process of transformation. This one seems to be for more formal, business occasions.

We get a well-lit view of the absolute bunfight of colours and patterns going on here. The shirt is particoloured, in red and green, both woven with gold in identical patterns, and cut and pieced together in this high, tight, stiff collar.

It bothered me that the patterns don't fit together at the neck at all well. I felt like something this magnificent should be pattern-matched more harmoniously than it is, with that seam between red and green in such a prominent place at least trying to look more symmetrical. The outer gown looks green here, with a sort of damask needlecord texture. In most shots it looks black.

The outfit returns in Episode 26, by which time we know that the consequences of the transformation have hit. We get a nice view of the structure here. The visible parts are the undershirt or tunic (actually two different ones), a very full pleated skirt, a splendidly gold-patterned wrap-around robe that's very tightly fitted to the waist and emphasised with a belt, and then this spectacular gown that might be green or black, with the giant explosions of gold embroidery. And an asymmetrical gold crown.

It's his most magnficent outfit, far more visually intimidating than the black-and-gold fighting gown he wore in Episode 9, and he wears this repeatedly when he knows his actual power is severely weakened.

The gold edges of the gown seem to be made of thousands of tiny sequins, and they're not just gold, there are hints of green to give it depth - and the gold extends beyond the pattern, like dust.

There are actually two different shirts. The red-and-green one in Episodes 14 and 27, and this black-and-gold one in Episode 26 which is a different colour of the same pattern, with no red-and-green pieces, less tightly fitted to the neck, and pieced differently. You can see almost all of the V shape and the little plant shape in the lower part of the pattern, which you can't in the red-and-green.

I think this is an error, because the next scene is supposed to be a direct continuation of the scene above, but we go back to red-and-green. You have to look hard to notice it though.

The texture of the gold on the gown is amazing. The effect in a shot like this is to make the hands look incredibly delicate and insubstantial.

He wears this outfit, with the red-and-green, for the qin duet with absolute madlad Changheng in Episode 27. And to fidget huffily and keep quiet while XLH dumps Changheng immediately after.

This is the scene where I reflected that if he was going to kill anyone, he'd be wearing the Hunting Dress. So this is what he wears when he wants to intimidate, and would probably prefer deadly violence if it were up to him, but can't or won't actually do anything but glare.

What a wonderful look for going on a date and being horribly, horribly embarrassed about it. Look at the gold on the inside of the sleeves! The sleeves of the outer gown seem to be lined with gold.

And the confession to Xunfeng.

At the end of Episode 28, he wears this to experiment with stubborn self-destruction:

And it stays with us through the whump scene, during which the crown symbolically falls off, and we get a good look at the texture. Like all his crowns and armour, it looks like something that grew on a tree, possibly as a result of insect attack. It's much prettier than the ones the fairy tribe wear. I'd like to know how this was made.

then the triumph:

And the disaster. Where we glimpse how heavily patterned the train is. The pattern makes it look as though it belongs to the robe underneath, but it's hanging straight from the shoulders, and we saw the robe has a belt, so I don't quite understand the structure here.

I call this this Chrysalis gown because it reminds me of the splendid protective costumes that certain butterflies and moths put on while they are tearing themselves apart and remaking themselves into a totally different shape.

Which seems to be the point, so perhaps the rather eye-watering pattern bunfight and the way none of the patterns fit together at the neck, are exactly as they should be.

sorry it has take me so long to answer- it basically looked like limbs rapidly growing. like imagine werewolf but less fuzzy and... wolfy. it is also certainly painful. sorry for such the long wait for the infection au :( I will try and update soon <3 I was inspired by a wof infection au here on tumbler and also just the mlp infection au's i've seen. mainly was inspired by the concept of the au's in general. The infection I came up with was something i made up on my own tho. he do kinda look like that... huh. Chrysalis is one of my fav mlp villains :) it makes me happy that noot reminds you of her. I can see the mountain goat. kinda. he do kinda have gorilla vibes tbh, though i used hippo bones a reference for drawing his "hands"
