#2025 - Ectopatria clavigera - Club-bearing Saltbush Moth
Tumblr media
AKA Namangana clavigera & Diplonephra clavigera.
There's quite a lot of salt-loving vegetation on Cooleenup Island. Quite a lot more in fact, since the opening of the Dawesville Cut changed the hydrology of the Peel Inlet, and among other things, killed every Swamp Paperbark on the island. Kitchen Lake behind the field station, for example, is all dead trees surrounded by salt-flat vegetation now.
The moth in question is a Western Australia endemic, but there are 19 species in the genus, most of whom are also called Saltbush Moths, so I can take a wide guess what their prefered habitat is.

Top 10 Indicators for Upgrading Your Electrical Panel
The circuit breakers of older homes are become increasingly incapable of supporting the rapidly increasing number of electronic devices and larger appliances. If you own a home that was built 50 years ago or more, you may need to upgrade your electrical panel. Also known as the breaker box, an electrical panel is typically a metal box attached to a wall in the utility room or basement. It houses circuit breakers, which look similar to large light switches.
Tumblr media
Function Circuit breakers handle the routing of electricity to wall outlets and appliances inside a home. They also set the capacity limit at a safe level to prevent wiring from overloading when there are power surges from the utility. When there’s an overload, they provide protection by tripping automatically and shutting off electricity to prevent appliances and electronic devices from overheating and starting a fire.
10 Top Indicators For the safety of your home and family, do not ignore the 10 top indicators that are warnings you may need to replace your electrical panel.
Appliances overheating Breakers often tripping Burn spot on wall outlet or electrical panel Burning electrical smell from a wall outlet or the breaker box Electrical panel equipped with fuse box rather than breakers Flickering lights Melting insulation on wiring Odd sounds coming from electrical panel Plugging in an appliance causes breaker to trip Wall outlets feel hot to the touch Dangerous Consequences Consistent overloading of a home’s wiring may result in destroyed wiring, electronic devices, and appliances due to overheating. Fixing a home’s electrical system will be costly, as will replacing equipment that was damaged beyond repair. However, the two most dangerous consequences from an overloaded electrical panel are electrical shocks and deadly fires that may cause injury or death.

Culeenup Island Field Station
Tumblr media
Now that I’ve covered all the New Zealand species @purrdence photographed at the end of 2022, I can start covering some of the Perth species again - to whit, the ones I saw out at the Yunderup Wildlife Observatory run by the WA Naturalists Club in June.
The Nats Club were established in 1924, and they built this cabin in 1985. Culeenup Island was chosen because the Murray-Serpentine delta is unique for the SW of Western Australia - we have no large rivers down here and this one opens into the Peel Inlet, rather than onto the coastline where surf would soon destroy it. Don’t ask me why this Murray shares a name with the much larger and more famous Murray that drains much of the Eastern states.
Unfortunately, in the decades since the cabin was built, the envionment around the delta has changed drastically - not only have multiple holiday homes been built on the island, introducing exotic species, but the entire chemistry of the area has changed. The Peel Inlet was having serious algal problems thanks to suburban and agricultural runoff in the 70s and 80s, so in the 1990s a channel was cut through the coast at Dawesville. This may have reduced the algal blooms, but it turned the hydrology of the delta from fresh to seasonally brackish, to marine tidal, and only occasionally brackish. This has killed most of the plants on the island that can’t survive extended periods of salinity. The islands are also suffering severe erosion - partly from plant loss, but also boat traffic, and, I suspect, the introduction of some crab species not previously native to the area.

Wiring and Rewiring Your Property
Faulty wiring in houses has been deemed to be the leading cause of residential fires. All it takes is a little spark to arouse a host of immediate problems when it comes to defective electrical wiring.
Therefore, it is important that when building a house, you look into employing proper wiring from the beginning. If you are purchasing or renovating your house, you must get the existing wiring checked for faults and look into rewiring the electrical network.
Why Proper Wiring or Rewiring is Necessary In the case that a property has not been rewired since the past 20 to 30 years, it is strongly recommended that you look into getting the data cabling replaced. The reason being that there is a high probability that several junctions and cables have become damaged or needs upgrades due to persistent use or wear and tear.
It is for the safety and benefit of you and your family that you should look into rewiring your property.
Tips for Rewiring After making the decision to get your property rewired, make note that it is a messy and disruptive process that requires a lot of time and thought investment. Thus you must plan adequately for this task:
Start off by obtaining a plan of your house and locating the furniture in each of your rooms to accurately judge the electrical requirements of each location Decide where you want switches, alarms, lights, fans, and other electrical units to be located - it is preferably done in the beginning because wiring is a continuous process Changing your mind in the middle of the process can make it a longer process with possible increment in cost too. Rewiring is done in two stages: the ‘first fix’ and the ‘live’ stage.
The First fix: The wires and cables are laid down under the structure or the plaster Live stage is when the switchboards and sockets are installed to connect everything and make it operational. Due to the abundance of commercial technology these days, keep in mind of potential technology or devices you might be using or purchasing in the future. This is so you can make an estimate of the data cabling or wiring requirement needed for them.
