The Phantom: I am biggest drama queen
Carlotta : *I* le biggest drama queeén
.
.
.
I present to you
Barry James
As
Monsieur Richard Firmin
25th Poto Anniversary
Tumblr media
This poor man. No wonder he's struggling by the end of it. He's struggling now.
Tumblr media
Look at all that sass contained within those twirly hairs of his.
Tumblr media
Almost hit. Good dodging skills. Dealing with aggression in the workplace.
Can anyone catch the eye-roll here? He uses them like all that passive aggression will give Carlotta a hemorrhage.
Tumblr media
Does it look like pacification here? Gilles, you are the last wall before he's headbutting everyone, including himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This lad. He's so sassy and thank you Barry James with playing him an absolute fed-up man who has little to no patience for all this parafinalia.
He just wants his warm office and a tidy profit. Is that so much to ask?
More pictures because loOOk

Some random PotO moments that I love
(Some of these are little acting details from Jon Robyns' second performance on the West End aka the only live version I've seen)
This is also not a comprehensive list of all of them because everything in this show is great
Okay, everyone loves this, but the chandelier rising with the overture is incredible and deserves to be on every list.
The fact that The Phantom gets about 20,000 francs a month (which I'm convinced he just uses to keep his candle collection thriving).
"INSOLENT BOY, THIS SLAVE OF FASHION"
The fact that Erik was like "I'll show Christine the mannequin I have of her in a wedding dress. That'll go great!"
And then she passes out and he leaves her on the floor. 😭 (He does put his cloak over her though).
Is Erik that invested in his opera (Jon did have some very excited scribbling) that he didn't notice Christine wake up or was he just like "oop, she's waking up. Act natural, Erik. You are cool and mysterious. ACT NATURAL."
Jon half crawling half dragging himself across the stage during Stranger Than You Dreamt It (sir, how can you still sing like that???)
The whole Poor Fool sequence was very funny to watch and the cast nailed it!
Raoul being an adorable dork during All I Ask of You. 🥰 Matt Blaker is great.
The Phantom's reprise of All I Ask of You being one of my favourite vocal moments in the entire show! 🔥
Monsieur André's incredible sparkly skeleton get-up.
Carlotta's batwing dress!
Erik being the dramatic bitch he is and vanishing just to appear the top of the stairs again. Do you think he rehearsed that bit in his little sewer lair?
That sparky skull cane thing that Erik is waving around in the graveyard. 💀
Page Blankson is an absolute joy to watch as Christine.
Piangi drawing his coat around himself when The Phantom says he needs to lose weight and then him doing the same thing when Madame Giry asks Carlotta if they can be sure he's not watching rehearsals. Nice little detail.
The fact that in The Point of No Return The Phantom looks like the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come from The Muppets Christmas Carol.
Me watching Raoul jumping into the lake and thinking "that's a big drop from the stairs to the stage" only to watch him disappear below the stage.
Erik's organ slam because he has to be a drama queen.
Erik being like "if only I wasn't so ugly, then you would love me" and Christine pointing out that his face is not exactly the problem in this entire situation.
Jon's, Matt's and Paige's vocals!!!
Jon's delivery of "make your choice" coming across as a little broken and scared is *chef's kiss*.
*Christine kisses Erik* Erik.exe has stopped working
Jon's delivery of "LEAVE MEEEEE!"
The little Masquerade reprise that makes me cry. Every. Single. Time. 😭 (It's the hand over the monkey's face. I can't do it 🥲).
"Christine... I love you" *cries harder*
"IT'S OVER NOW THE MUSIC OF THE NIGHT"
Erik disappearing from the chair because he needs a final Dramatic Bitch™️ moment.

The first time I watched Phantom of the Opera, Masquerade stressed me out so bad bc the whole time I was like "yall are STUPID this is the PERFECT TIME for him to sneak in and get revenge"
And then he made his grand ass entrance
And I was like
"...nevermind."

So yeah, not sure if I'll put anything up directly on ao3 (might depend on how treatment goes) but I've been going through wrist and hand issues since last summer, which translated to tingling aches over the holidays, and now numbness and weakness in both hands. I got a study last week that confirmed double carpal tunnel, and I should be discussing severity and treatment options on Thursday, but for now, the point is that's probably been affecting my writing motivation before I was even aware of it. Even with voice-to-text, it's hard to get really into writing with that.
...That SAID, I can't entirely blame my hands for my hiatus. Been watching a lot of games and been busy with family, ~and~ coming back from seeing PotO has my headspace soundly on that. Been revisiting ol' rps and just brainstorming stuff, building would-be stories in my head, even if the thought of writing for phandom solo is overwhelming new territory. Especially since my Erik/Meg otp and 15+ years of headcanons would be beyond niche, and big plans = dedication I likely cannot give (see above wrist drama). Especially since I AM dedicated to finishing A Truth So Strong when I can. But that doesn’t stop me from binging musical songs and mentally organizing thoughts and trying to translate old headcanons into more mainstream phan friendly ideas, and initially balking and then coming to love the idea of a Meg-Raoul friendship. pouty puppy & bratty big sis ftw. (even though he's older. shush.)

Hi! I've been so entranced by your drawings for your story The Phantom and the Soldier, they're so pretty and I love the concept!
I'm curious for any and every detail of this beauty, it's so interesting, I don't mind if you gush about it 🥰🥰❤️
Oho, you want to hear more about my Angel of Music? My sewer woman? My drama queen?
A core part of Vesta's (my Phantom's) character is the desire to return to what once was - an angel in the heavens. What happens when an inhuman entity is placed in a flawed, mortal body (granted, to save her life)? She's spent much of her youth searching for a way to restore her previous self, but the hope has since ebbed away. She's now just Vesta, scarred. Vesta, drinking wine and hiding away in the underground. Vesta, with a face growing lined with age, brow furrowed while toiling away at her music desk.
Death hangs its shadow over her, but the arts can grant a kind of immortality, in a sense. The arts are a way for her to capture divinity, even if the product is just an imperfect copy. Perhaps if she makes something so powerfully sublime it subsumes her in the process. Her face will not matter. The masterwork will be all that remains. Nevertheless, she's also faced with human needs. Deep down, she does feel lonely, even if she doesn't directly acknowledge it much. She's secluded herself due to being used one too many times (angel blood is used to power magic, but that's a discussion for another time). So when she's faced with a person showing love and affection without any ulterior motive, how does she react?
I think a key part of the story's also about learning what it is to be human. The joy of creation in the arts. The smell of freshly-baked bread. Dreaming of glory on rooftops. A lover's smile reflected in your own. A family, found. Human life is about finite joys, but they are made precious because they end. We cherish them while we can. I hope that wasn't too sappy. I enjoy stories exploring what makes life worth living. The heart's a heavy burden, but it's one Vesta learns she'll gladly bear.
Inspirations (aside from various POTO works) include Howl's Moving Castle, The Last Unicorn, and... New Capenna, from Magic: the Gathering, surprisingly enough.
Fun fact: This originally started as an AU for ocs from an entirely different project (Project: Lorn/Takipsilim), which explains why their names aren't Erika and Crispin. They're pretty different from where they started, and it's been fun to watch them change and grow. And Vesta's a goddess of hearth, home, and family.

OMGOMGOMGOMG, WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME ,FELLOW POTO PHAN!!
WELCOME TO MY HUMBLE ABODE!!
allow me to offer you some refreshment!!
Lemme tell you, I AM A HUGE FAN OBSESSED WITH THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
OBSESSED.
Between the costumes, the music and the story ( and the book too, because dear Gods, I do adore it as well, Bless Monsieur Leroux for writing it), it ALL literally sings to my soul, even creatively speaking.
(also, Erik is my dork drama queen, and a mood because yes, I want to be a hermit in my cave under the Opéra Garnier, creating creative stuff, fml). 😂😂😂😂
it's just...EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING.
The dark romance in it is EVERYTHING my dark soul loves to find in fiction, fml (yes, I am Team Erik until the day I will leave this Earth.TRUST.😂😂😂).
BUT YES. I AM A DORK WHO ADORES THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
Tumblr media
(like this? THIS GIF IS EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING).
THANK YOU FOR DROPPING THIS IN MY INBOX.
MY CREATIVE CRICKETS ARE GOING TO HAVE A PARTY TODAY! 😂😂😂
(seriously thank you. You are welcome to my inbox each time you like! I love talking about this! <3)

Socks reviews POTO China For reasons I'm not sharing, this review is going to be limited to things I liked, things I didn't like, and things I couldn't decide whether I liked or not. Review under cut.
If you liked this production, you may want to keep scrolling.
Things I liked: Carlotta Piangi Carlotta is in love with Piangi. Piangi is in love with Carlotta. Piangi waving at the elephant Good arm movements during MOTN Very good "soar" (Chinese equivalent) Good eye contact with Christine during the sprawl Shirtsleeves under the Mandarin robe! The smacking sound when the Phantom plorps onto the ground during STYDI The way the Phantom grabs Christine's wrist was not really a grab at all, it was very gentle and I really liked it. The manager announcing the ballet! Shadow Phantom my beloved The unhinged laugh right before Buquet drops The bang and the smoke when Red Death disappears. Every production needs that loud bang. Raoul reacting to seeing the Phantom on the mausoleum Trio my beloved! We can actually hear Raoul during the trio! The BOOMS when the Phantom is throwing fireballs! The smoke that poofs up, and the way Raoul reacts to it Christine acting horny during PONR The Phantom grasping at his heart during PONR Phantom hands during PONR The Phantom almost brings Christine's hand up to his face during the boat ride The way he almost throws himself off the boat XD The way he's bent over so much
Things I didn't like: Carlotta wasn't wearing enough makeup during Hannibal Piangi's Hannibal moustache Christine. Christine's acting. The heavy breathing she does every time the Phantom shows up. The weird faces she makes. I know what she's supposed to be feeling, but I'm not seeing it. All I'm seeing is *heavy breathing* and open-mouthed--wide-eyes-pouty-face from her like you see from a lot of female characters in anime. The self-caress the Phantom does made it look like he had a headache. No lip deformity The audience really needs to stop talking during the performance. The lack of fireballs when the Phantom is throwing fireballs. Seriously, where is the fire? No candle. Fine, I'll accept it. But did this Phantom cut the rope with his fingernails??
Things I can't put in either category: Raoul. He's doing exactly what he's supposed to do. No more, no less. The Phantom. See Raoul's explanation above. There is nothing that stands out about either of them that makes me think "oh this guy is great!" or "oh this guy is awful." Nothing. Average. the way Christine acts after Carlotta "throws" her onto the bed. It was a very gentle push onto the bed, but Christine acted like Carlotta bodyslammed her onto the bed and started cringing away from her. Who is supposed to be the drama queen here again? Christine acting like she's drunk/hypnotized when the Phantom shows up during Maskenball. I guess that's one way to avoid your ex. The kiss-hug-kiss. What even is happening?

Chapter 15 - Uncharted Territory
[E/C / Post-LND Webber-based / Domestic Fluff with a side of Angst / Fic length: 100k]
After dinner, Gustav had half a mind to leave, half a mind to stay. As he watched Beatrice conversing easily with others, even laughing, he clenched his jaw. The blood of his father coursed through his veins and pounded into his head, passionate and impulsive. It whispered: cause a scene. He finished his scotch in a single swallow and sat at the piano. “Canto Beatrice” it was.

don’t try and convince me that raoul and erik are not a perfect match when both of them gets awfully petty over the smallest inconvenience.
they deserve each other.
they deserve to be petty together. ♡

Because I'm on a Phantom of the Opera kick atm, here's
THE BAD BATCH IF THEY WERE DRESSED AS PHANTOM CHARACTERS
Hypothetical scenario: The Batch are going to a fancy dress party and are each dressed as a character from POTO. But who is who?
Omega
Tumblr media
Christine's masquerade dress. She's spinning around in that thing like there's no tomorrow (getting glitter everywhere). ✨️
Hunter
Tumblr media
Raoul's masquerade outfit. Omega felt like she needed a Raoul to her Christine and Hunter wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to make her happy. (and no I don't mean this in a Hunter x Omega way, just that he wants to be a fun supportive dad)
Tech
Tumblr media
Monsieur Firmin! That man is gonna be dapper as hell. He's wearing that waistcoat and no-one can stop him.
Wrecker
Tumblr media
You can't have Monsieur Firmin without Monsieur André! And Wrecker is totally turning up in André's sparkly skeleton number. He and Omega are fully embracing the masquerade vibes.
Echo
Tumblr media
Our boy is The Phantom! As soon as they knew they were going to this party, he was claiming that bedazzled cape. Anytime he disagrees with Hunter, he flicks him with it. The man is living for the drama queen vibes! (If Fives was still here, he would've been Christine because he would insist that they go as a pair). (Also not intended as shipping)
Crosshair
Tumblr media
He's not being outdone. He's going as The Phantom, but specifically in the masquerade getup. He's going to be the best dressed there because he said so!

Me: doesn't commit to a writing project for a full two years to concentrate on the Leaving Cert, in love with my fantasy story based on a lot of Irish mythology, close to my heart, book child, just simmering away in the background
My brain at 7am on a Sunday: Shy!Erik phic loosely based off the 1990 version, doesn't want to give his name because Christine might draw a comparison between his and Raoul's and find Raoul more 'regal' as a whole, vents all of this to Nadir, chickens out of talking to her at least twice.
Me: yes.

But seriously Erik howling his vow of revenge to the stars while his fucking 50 feet long cape billows dramatically in the wind is enough to justify the existence of the 2004 film.
