Who speaks the most languages? Also who has the best French?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
well this just might be my most ambitious ask in a while :) shout out to the 1.5 francophones who may or may not follow this blog. And also for those 1.5 francos...
*cependant, selon le Lego, mon éditrice n'est même pas considérée québécoise haha >>;
more info below!
I already expect this piece to get less engagement because it's (mostly) not in English, and I'm afraid I'm still going to be more annoying and not provide a translation. As previously I will lean into making a statement Windex-style by purposefully not translating what I've written above into English just because the point of celebrating Franco-Albertan heritage month is, well, acknowledging the unique status of French in this country and how there is an expectation to conform to English in this province that needs a little challenging. I hope if nothing else, it strikes your curiosity enough to painstakingly type it into google translate so you can get half of the banter.
Another question that languished at the bottom of the box for over a year! This was because I felt I should make a real effort to write in French, of course, but also because I struggled with the wording of the question and ultimately didn't answer it. The "most" or the "best" are very loaded terms, so I avoided answering them entirely particularly because we have several languages that risk losing native speakers and because there's a lot of bs wrapped up in what "good" french is that I'm not skilled enough to unpack (though you can read what Windex wrote on this matter earlier on this blog... And here as well).
I have to strike a balance between representing the gang here as individuals (and immortals to boot) who have a lot of time on their hands and some interest and investment in learning languages on one hand... but also as representations of "average" people on the other. Francophone travellers aren't going to find many French speakers outside of airports, national parks, or government services in this province, but it still might surprise you considering all the "everyone outside of Quebec hates French" rhetoric that politicians like to fling around. It's more complicated than that, obviously, but I can mostly talk about my own personal experience with French here. I tried to represent both the reality that Franco-Alberta exists (represented by Ed) and the stereotypical resistance to French here (represented by Calvin, though clearly he understands enough to respond here. I also just think he tries to play dumb on purpose so that others underestimate him, it's all part of the image!)
Finally, I don't speak any of the languages (Michif, Tagalog, Punjabi, Cree) represented here so I hope they pass muster for the purpose of this little comic! ;~;b I have also represented Calvin speaking Mandarin previously on this blog!
oh yeah, and that "english and business" quote is from kevin o'leary who is from montreal so make of that what you will.

Things that make me proud to be Canadian:
I PERSONALLY BELONG(ED) TO THE TRIBE THAT BURNED DOWN THE AMERICAN WHITEHOUSE. Yup, there was a war between Canada and the United States, and CANADA won. 🇨🇦
Canadians won the most bloody battle in World War 2 history, Vimmy Ridge. No other army in the war at the time could take that land, but we did.
We go into many wars as Humanitarian Aid, saving life, not ending it.
We don't pay for healthcare
We do have a lot of military power, but we don't brag
We manufacture almost all aircraft, even spacecraft, especially used in NASA and the USA military. *Pieces are made in Canada, and they are "assembled" (sometimes) in their own country.*
People are actually charged for hate speech, like it should be. Even during a protest.
Scary things about being Canadian:
Knowing your neighbours have a ton of nukes and thinking they would do a cheap shot and nuke us if we ever went against them.
You can never be truthful to Americans about WW2 when you know they didn't "win" WW2, they just came in as a "cleanup crew", and it wasnt out of the good of their hearts. They only joined the war because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and Japan was allied with Germany at the time.
After being previously with some women in the states and living there, I learned that in school, we learned more about their countries history as a Canadians in school than them...
We are starting to morph slowly into the USA, becoming more and more capitalistic...
Our history reflects poorly to both my Native Cree culture and Jewish heritage. (Obviously other native tribes were effected)
Residential Schools, the last one shut down in 1996. I was school-aged myself for quite a bit by that time...
We have a two party mentality. "If I don't vote Liberal or Conservative, I might as well throw my vote away." While the New Democratic Party has gained steam and wants to do so much positive change. This also include the death of Jack Layton.
I am just as scared as any other Jew and we are considered one of the most peaceful countries in the world.

I don’t see him as “ the big star “ but agree with anon that for any actor to be in consistent work and who’s work impresses enough to be wanted by the same team for a new project is an achievement , not all manage that even the more in some opinions talented . I think he has gained a reputation for his work ethic and is generally popular / liked within the level of the industry he is currently operating in .
Yes, and that's what I also wrote. But how special is that. If i see how many of the OL cast have gotten good projects they're working on and gained a reputation. RR with Rebus, and LL with Virgil, CD did some movies, photoshoots, GMT is working consistently, CB had Belfast and nominations for it, Ed Speleers in YOU and The Mandalorian, Tobias has a movie coming, worked on The Crown for 2 seasons, Steven Cree with The Diplomat, and I can go on. There are more that did achieve to be consistently working gaining a reputation and working on their careers steadily. The only ones I can think off that we haven't seen much or any other projects from are SS and Duncan L.
So that's what I meant with good, but don't act as if he's a superstar and praise him straight into heaven for as if he's something super special. It's good, okay, fine and I hope he'll got the best out of it and can go on like this. But I don't see it is better than any of the others I mentioned above.

Talk Hockey To Me
Tagged by the wonderful @39oa, thank you so much!
1. The thing that got you hooked on hockey
Grew up around hockey fans, but I wasn't one myself until I poked around on the National Film Board website for something to watch late one night and stumbled on the half-hour 1964 documentary Un jeu si simple (Such a Simple Game). I was hooked pretty much immediately. I typed a shitty little prose poem about it into my notes app right after I finished it and I think Jean-Guy Talbot was my first-ever favourite player.
https://www.nfb.ca/film/such_a_simple_game/
2. Your first ever fandom friend
@cactustreesmotel who I reeled in after me with pictures of Reggie Leach and frantic updates about Thomas Milic's save percentage.
3. The jersey you would most like to own
Ethan Bear canucks jersey (esp if the canucks ever release one with cree syllabics like the oilers did). I'm seriously begging canucks management to re-sign him bc i never got to see him live last year, which killed me.
4. YOUR player (you only get ONE so choose wisely)
I'm choosing to interpret this as ONE current nhl player, ONE former nhl player, and ONE player from any other leagues (each) as I see fit. Here goes!
Ethan Bear (currently unsigned as discussed above, but I'm hoping that'll change)
Ken Dryden (fav goalie and very good writer, notably voted for same-sex marriage as a Liberal MP in 2005 and wrote an op-ed about it in the Toronto Star)
Jeremy Hanzel (WHL, defenseman, Avs draft pick)
Annalise Wong (USPORTS, forward)
5. A pairing that deserves more fic
Not my personal cup of tea, N/A!
6. Your favourite on-ice moment
Ethan Bear scored last year on Hockey Night in Canada and I happened to be actually be watching. I went nuts!
THEN
link someone else's art/fic/etc that you love & think everyone should check out
@thingsmk1120sayz makes really amazing collage art!
link something you made & are proud of & want people to see
I haven't made any hockey content except for a frank mahovlich webweave that i ain't linking lmao. It's on my blog somewhere if you really want to see it tho
Tagging @onmytape @cactustreesmotel @thingsmk1120sayz if you'd like to do this!

Is there a big Jack Crusher fan base out there in a segment of the fandom. Now i don't hate him or the job ed did by any stretch. But I found him to be one of the least interesting character as season 3 went on.
Made me think i wonder if the powers that be suffered from a similar issue to Encanto (i know a bit of a stretch thematically) but prior to release the make assumptions the public will identify with character x. Isabella who spins the pretty flowers but in reality so many people gravitated to luisa. And they had vasitly under estimated the love and the merchandise they had produced.
S3 maybe thought everyone would love Jack, but really, i liked all the other cree far far more. Like crash, and esmar

Wait omg going based on the ‘family of three’ fic you did: Would you be willing to write something similar to that but how Ed and Stede would react if reader was caught in the middle of a ship attack if that makes sense lol.
Ahhhh!! I’m so happy to write for this certain scenario again! It is just so sweet! Thank you so much for requesting this!
Fandom: Our Flag Means Death
(kind of?) HURT TO COMFORT
pronouns: Gender neutral
Tw: kidnapping, blood, mentions of killing, almost kidnapping, cursing, gore
Also, This story is apart of another work i wrote called, ‘A Family Of Three’, So if you enjoy this then maybe think about checking that one out aswell :)
                                   I’ll always be right here
The sea life never truly was peaceful, raids, storms, and many more issues constantly would plague pirates, pirates just like Y/n.
It had been a little over a year since Y/n had sneaked onto The infamous Revenge, and became the adopted child of the one and only Gentleman Pirate and Blackbeard.
“Ay! Captain…We are coming up on a naval ship!” Button yelled down to the deck below.
“Hmm, What do you wanna do Ed?” Stede looked over to the other man.
“Well, it’s too late to dodge 'em’ So gather the crew and let’s put up a good fight!”
The men ran around, gathering Guns, ammo, cannons, knives, and other weapons as they prepared for battle.
Stede stepped forward towards Y/n, “Darling, you know the drill now, down into the lower deck you go!”
Y/n nodded and set for downstairs.
The water seemed to still as The Revenge neared the Spanish Naval ship, as the Spanish entered the other ship, all hell broke loose.
Y/n heard the screams of death above them, that was nothing new, but froze as the stairs leading to the lower deck seemed to creak.
Their breath caught as  they heard the sound of two Spanish soldiers talking amongst themselves.
“ay, el capitán dijo que saqueáramos todos los objetos de valor y que nos fuéramos lo más rápido que pudiéramos.” One of them said,
Hiding behind a barrel full of rum, Y/n clasped their mouth shut and tried not to make a sound as the men got louder and louder.
“¿Vaya? bueno, ¿qué tenemos aquí? Parece un niño pequeño, ¿crees que podríamos ganar algo de dinero con ellos?” The other man smirked as they came across Y/n.
Before Y/n knew what was going on the men had grabbed them by the wrists and started dragging them towards the stairs.
“No! Let me go you bastards!” Y/n started to scream, thrashing their body.
Being dragged up the stairs onto the upper deck, Y/n saw a massacre of a battle in front of them.Just then, both of the men let them go as their hands were cut off by Edward.
“What the fuck do you think your doing with my kid?!”
Now Edward was fighting against the two soldiers, giving Y/n enough time to get away from the three.
Y/n crawled away quickly, Looking around they only saw fighting, “Y/n! What are you doing!” Jim cried as a bullet narrowly missed the kid.
Standing up, Y/n ran for any ounce of safety around, yes, The Revenge was winning but that didn’t mean every enemy had been defeated.
As the last of the Spanish soldiers were killed both Stede and Edward ran towards Y/n and wrapped them in a hug.
“Oh my love! Are you hurt? Are you okay? What did they do to you?-” Stede rambled before Ed interrupted him,
“Mate, let them breathe.”
“I’m okay, just shaken up.” Y/n looked at them tearfully.
“Oh thank the heavens!” Stede cried.
“C'mon you two, let's get cleaned up.” Edward smiled.
Translations!!!!
Oh captain said to loot all the valuables, and get out as fast as we can
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh? Well what do we have here? Looks like a kid, do you think we could make some money off of them?
These translations are from google translate and I myself don’t speak Spanish so I am so sorry if something looks wrong!!

Ayuda a familiarizarse

Hi and welcome to this thing that's sort of a prequel to the timeline I'm working on. The working title is Alberta Story, but as you can see I kind of changed directions midway through as I thought about it more, I figured if I was getting frustrated then surely Ed was also getting frustrated with it so I turned it over to him to express that, haha. I wrote the first half of this last fall and stewed on it for about a year and decided, screw it, I don't know where I'm going with this but I will slap on a few more panels and figure it out as I go.
This might be the closest thing to a reboot of the BoAB main storyline for a while. I wanted to do something that gave a cursory outline of Canadian / Albertan history for people who are new to it, but of course it runs the risk of repeating every narrative Canada / Alberta have about themselves and that's quite frustrating, to be honest! Particularly when you are trying to write characters who lived through a great chunk of it.
I was trying to think about where to "start" the story of Alberta, particularly after reading Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta. A lot of the tongue in cheek ahistorical assigning of Albertan-ness to even protozoic life rubbed me the wrong way even though I found it an interesting narrative, so I wanted to illustrate the difficulty of "beginning".
Additionally: I really find it frustrating in the Hetalia fandom when people kind of take Himaruya's approach and suggest the colonized personifications almost predate colonization somehow, like they were "always there", or the approach that they are direct descendants of some ambiguous ancestral "Native America" that mysteriously no longer exists. At the same time, I sort of understand how it also happens with the narratives we construct ourselves, in textbooks and museums, that have long illustrated "pre-history" (Indigenous history) as opposed to "history" (the "Real" history of Euro-Canadians). It's a cultural underpinning that needs to be undone.
I don't make any ambitious claims to produce real, decolonizing work, I realize there's this big gap in this universe I'm building that acknowledges municipal personifications and only vaguely gestures at the idea of others and there's a myriad of issues with that, but it's a place that I as a euro-canadian myself am starting with and I hope to continue learning and growing from here.
"Here" is summed up as: isn't it crazy that a company that was just gifted 1/12th of the surface of the Earth not only predates the idea of this country and its cities but also still exists and is just a place you end up in at the mall now?
More detailed explanation of each panel follows.
Diver's Claw: Several stories in different First Nations cosmologies reference the Creator or another figure making a flood that covered the whole earth, where a survivor (Wisakedjek in Cree/Ojibwe stories, Na'pi in Blackfoot, etc) sends down a succession of animals to the bottom of the waters to retrieve a piece of the old earth, which they can then use to create anew.
Mounds of Earth: When the Northwest Mounted Police were sent out west from Canada after purchasing the territories (including Alberta) from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1870, they marked the border along what would become the 49th parallel between Canada and the United States with piles of dirt.
Descent from the Stars: This is supposed to be a depiction of Manitou Asiniy, also known as the Manitou Stone or Creator's Stone, a meteorite that has spiritual significance to many Indigenous peoples. As I write this, he (as a sacred being, he is referred to with these pronouns) is currently in the custody of the Royal Alberta Museum which has recently agreed to return him to the site where he was originally taken from near Hardisty in 1866. Currently, the gallery is open for worship and ceremony until it is time to repatriate him.
Bodies liquified in coral: this is NOT a scientific illustration, haha. The idea is that a lot of Albertan identity comes from about 400 million years ago in the Devonian period. At the time, a big chunk of "Alberta" was covered by ocean. The organisms lived, died, and over time became crushed by sediment layered over them. Coral has a lot of holes perfect for holding this sludge and fossilizes nicely here, and it is this layer of Earth's long history that speculators are looking for when drilling for oil.
Lips to a book: Alberta joined Confederation on September 1st, 1905, which our last premier tried to commemorate with a holiday that no one showed up to. Back at the turn of the century however, it was a massive party attended by Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier and the Governor General, a position in Canadian parliament that represents the King or Queen of England. Govenor General Grey (his grandpa was the Earl Grey the tea was named for, I believe) was the one who kissed the bible at this inauguration.
Prince: The prince here is Prince Rupert, who Rupert's Land was named for, and the king in question is Charles II of England (yes, the Restoration and Great Fire of London party guy from the Stuart era). Rupert's Land centred on Hudson's Bay and made up over 40% of what is now considered Canada. The Hudson's Bay Company was granted the charter to all this territory - if they found the Northwest Passage while they were at the business of acquiring beaver or otter pelts, it was certainly a bonus.
The rest is fairly self explanatory, I hope. Like I said, I felt like I was falling into the trap of the same old story of pioneers and exploration that has been absolutely done to death in Canadian history, and I didn't have anything particularly new to say about it that would maintain this storybook level of accessibility so I just. Stopped! Shifted gears! haha. Still, I think the fur trade is a very important piece to the puzzle that often gets either a bit overhyped or glossed over in favour of railroads in Canadian history and almost entirely ignored and forgotten in American history, and it makes sense to start there, particularly for Ed who has a lot of Complicated Feelings about it.
Enjoy! Maybe one day I will figure out part two.
